News from Al Golden: suspension(s?), Seantrel, NCAA Clearinghouse, etc.

PINEHURST, N.C. -- Had a pleasant one-on-one interview with Coach Golden today. I hope he does well at UM. He is respectful, direct and answers questions -- or at least actually listens to them. Yes, he's a coach, and coaches often answer questions by not answering them, or by being so confusing you don't know what's going on (evidence: the first time Golden talked to us during spring about possible suspensions).  But so far, I'm very impressed. We'll see how it plays out as the season progresses. I guess so much of it comes down to the W's (I won't mention the other letter).

I don't have much time here, because group interviews with coaches are approaching at the ACC Football Kickoff. And again, unfortunately, Al Golden's interview session is late afternoon/evening. Bad for deadline purposes.

Briefly, if any of you follow me on twitter @smillerdegnan you saw this stuff, but here's some of the newsy stuff he told me. I haven't transcribed yet, sorry.

I asked Coach Golden: "Not naming names, is there anyone you know that will be suspended for at least one game this season?"  His answer. "Yes."

He hedged when I asked him if there were "multiple players suspended" -- seemed to be counting in his mind (haha -- seriously), and again, I don't have the transcription yet. But he did tell me he will let media know of anyone suspended the week going into that particular game.

OT Seantrel Henderson has been dealing with lower back pain for a long time now, and he is trying to resolve the problem. He will be eased into fall practice gradually, as will DT Marcus Forston, who is coming off knee surgery.

S Vaughn Telemaque, who was wearing a neck brace during the spring game, should be OK for fall practice.

Coach Golden said WR Aldarius Johnson is doing well and everything is good with him and the Canes. Many of us have heard about certain attitude-related situations with Aldarius, but Golden insisted he's A-OK.

Some incoming signee (or not incoming) news:

  1. Golden said OL signee Taylor Gadbois (6-7, 292) of Ga. will attend "prep school for half a year" before coming to UM.
  2. Golden said LB signee Antonio Kinard (Hargrave Academy) & West Boca DT signee Corey King have Clearinghouse issues. He's hoping they get cleared, but who knows?

Also, Golden said Jeffrey Brown (arrest formerly reported) will not be returning to the team and is no longer at UM.

Golden said  OT Joel Figueroa, who was granted a rare sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, is raring and ready to go. But he would not say what position on the line he will play. If you recall, Joel started as a guard and was moved to tackle. If you guys know anything about Art Kehoe, he practices everyone at every position on the line.

   Have to run now.

   Later, Susan Miller Degnan

P.S. ACC media just picked FSU to beat Virginia Tech in the ACC title game for the ACC crown. UM was picked second in the Coastal Division behind Va. Tech.

Hurricanes' coach Al Golden won't wait long to name starting quarterback

gUess who ?

According to one Hurricanes player, changes along those lines have begun taking shape.

"The attitude of the team is a complete 180 from what it was last year," UM center Tyler Horn said during this weekend's ACC Kickoff at Pinehurst Resort.

These days, the buzzwords around Coral Gables are "accountability" and "ownership." In the past, they may have lost their influence.

Not anymore, Horn said.

"[We're] more hard-working and keeping ourselves accountable," Horn said. "[It's] making sure you get your job done. That it's on you to make your block or catch the football; not no one else's fault. That's really been instilled in our program."

according to ... ?

Until UF stops ducking us all Gator trolls go away

I ate a pack of M&M's today...the last 8 were 4 green, 4 orange.

That's a sign it's our year people!!!

I should add that I am heavily medicated today.

I've been a Cane since my brother was recruited by DW in '85 and wore fatigues to the Fiesta.

During all that time, I have NEVER seen FSwho and UFluke superior to THE U. I've only seen UF beat us once in all that time but for some reason they troll here. Please tell me why?

FSwho has been knocked down by THE U how many years going for a NC? I mean, we've played in 10 NCs and won 6 of those. It would be 7 if FSwho wasn't chosen to go get embarrassed by OU in 1999. The real team was left out NY a loss to Washington even though we spanked FSwho that year.

If you feel you need to poke those chests out over the last few years of mediocrity then go ahead.

But please beat us when it matters...

Envy the past.
Fear the future.

amen 360. well put

FYI: I saw Kenny Kelly in high school near Tampa. He was good, I don't know what happened along the way to UM. Ryan Collins: Just ask Warren Sapp or Donnell Bennet why Collins didn't play much. He was a three-sport athlete in Ft. Lauderdale, and I think he was first team all-state in b-ball.

As for Dorsey, that team was loaded. I'll take Gino's leadership, Walsh's team-spirit, knowledge and command of game. Dorsey: I don't think so.

Cat, high school my little furry friend has little to do playing college ball. Now I agree that Kelly had a good skill set but he chose to pursue a baseball career and Ryan Collins wasn't as good as Costa and that in itself should tell U what he was. U don't have to tell me, I saw every QB we have had since Kelly and know how good they all are. But if U are mentally challenged enough to think Dorsey was not a great QB then U are nuts. U talk about leadership skills, when we were down 27-7 to FSU, he was on the sideline instructing players and coaching them while he then led us to a comeback victory. Dorsey wasn't hiding somewhere on the sideline like Jacory was at times last year looking for his happy place. A QB has to do more than just throw a ball 60yards. He has to be a leader and that is what Dorsey was.

Gators shouldn't troll until UF agrees to play us every year.....cowards

The U has a great season ahead of them.. I pick them over Duke by 3.

Gatard trash bears UK and Vandy but gets smoked by UAB and everyone else in the SEC Eazy.

Someone show me a prostyle O that had no good pass catching TE's and they just lit it up? You wont, and that was J12s problem last year. Remember 2009?

Going into last season everyone, and i mean everyone had high expectations locally and nationaly. But no one took time to see that the team was flawed. They were very to defend last season.

sorry new at this.

Al Golden is like Wyatt Earp coming to Tombstone and cleaning up 'the cowboys" and running them all to the ground (literally) In the movie after his brother has been murdered and another injured he is seeing them off at the train depot and two of the 'cowboys" show up to kill him and after taking one down he takes the other to the ground, points his shot gun at him, takes his spur and rips the guy's face, the guy is scared to death and he lets him go with a warning to tell the other "cowboys" that he is coming and Hell is coming with me."

This is what is going to happen in the ACC with Golden and staff at the U. Bet on it! Miami is coming and Hell is coming with them!

Nice update Susan.
