Report: NCAA to question UM over relationship with former booster Nevin Shapiro

According to InsideTheU.com, the NCAA will be at the University of Miami Monday to question people involved with knowledge of potential violations regarding impermissible benefits and former booster Nevin Shapiro.

Citing multiple sources, InsideTheU reported Sunday that the NCAA is looking into comments made by Shapiro that he was involved in giving former players money.

Shapiro, who contributed $150,000 to the UM athletic program, pled guilty to running a $930 million Ponzi scheme and was sentenced to 20-years in prison in June. Shapiro has said he plans on writing a “tell-all book” about his involvement with former UM players -- dating back to 2001 during the Larry Coker and Randy Shannon eras.

The issue in the end will be if Shapiro has any real evidence or credibility to prove the allegations. When this first surfaced over a year ago, nobody around the program told me they thought he did.

Stay tuned for more. I'm sure we'll get a response from UM at some point in the next 24 hours.

I am shocked by these allegations.

Good Lord, here we go again.

Sounds like somebody needs money right away ... so let me write a book ... blah, blah, blah

this guy has no credibility what so ever. Let him blab away. What a pathetic loser to start something like this for his own benefit and not care if it makes us look bad. These are kids that he's messing with. Pathetic.

Imagine that ?

and the walls ...

PAPER TRAIL ?

Cat ?

U got troUble

The NCAA will want to know if any UM officials knew what was happening. How could they know when Shaq and Dwayne Wade were hanging around with this guy and he was having dinner with the chief of Police of Miami Beach? The guy was bad news and its likely some UM players were at his parties. If there were no agents there and proof of money exchange the NCAA has nothing.
Sure it will make some former players look bad if true. We will see.

Don't worry Gator crybabies come 2013 it will all be alright..."U" better find a way to get us off the schedule.

I believe the NCAA can only punish a school for violations going 4 years back. Still we hope there's no proof of anything.

This "supposedly" happened over 10 years ago...IF this low life piece of human waste had ANY CREDIBLE PROOF, he would have used it already and not have "threatened" to write a "tell all book" about things.

The guy is human scum. Period. Nothing to worry about what-so-ever!

It makes no sense to punish a University in 2011 for improprieties committed in 2001. None of those people are still there, including the coaches.

Face facts. Anyone, ever in the program, who is, or might be in the game, should be held accountable for their actions.
No statute of limitations.

I believe the NCAA can only punish a school for violations going 4 years back.

Wrong again ...

Smoke ='s Fire and the N.C.2.A. are the Firemen...

Gonna get real good Arty... We tried to warn them.

"According to UM" There is NOTHING to see here... Pay no mind to the raging flash fire that's about to combust out of control...

According to UM

According to UM

According to UM

Okay, this is when all true hurricane fans earn their degrees off the field, to go along with their so called on the field ones. It was plenty of violations going on. After they finish their investigation. The world will see why Randy Shannon was such a disciplinary during his tenure. Cane fans will see why RS didn't allow former players(those whose name will come up) sideline passes. In the end,Coach Shannon will be the most beloved Hurricane of all time. He will be remembered as the coach who guided and PROTECTED us back to the promise land.S o don't worry Shannon nay sayers, this years championship will not be stripped away!!!!! Thanks to who, the man who you wouldn't support.....Coach Randy Shannon

No worries, this is a criminal trying to make money by writing a book to raise funds for his defense. gatah trolls will comment however the NCAA is also in Gainesville investigating the arrest, Pouncey Money swaps with multiple players which is why Urbie bolted so fast. Fortunately this is from 2001 and nothing can come of allegations that old since noone is still with the University that might have knowledge. This will past by the end of the week.

Butch Davis was in Fl recently, probably trying to peddle the services of his QB son, Drew. The UNC Chancellor criticized Butch for offering his son a scholarship to UNC without discussing it with the administration. I guess Butch and his son have decided that it not be best if his son accepted the offer, and have now decided to look at schools in Fl. I believe Butch to be a good and honorable man who got the shaft at UNC.

Figures a gtr will make stoopid comments like that.

First of all, these are ALLEGED improprieties. Whether most of you believe it happened or not, this loser's credibility is below Rothstein's or Madoff's. he is a convicted Felon. If the NCAA decides they believe him, then they need to go back and believe what Clarett (another felon) said when he claimed that he was "helped" at Ohio State. The NCAA blew him off.

They need to have receipts, proof of transactions, etc. they cannot go by hearsay from a pi55ant little j-w boy who was a wannabe. I knew that d--k in college. He was a little mouthy dweeb who flashed money left and right, and bought friends and bought his social life. Now he is getting Rammsteined by Bubba.

Next time you see Shapiro, he is going to have two earrings, and lipstick. He will be known as somebody's girlfirend, and he will need to wear pampers because he will no longer have muscle tone in his sphincter

Wish on gator fans. This is your way to wish something happens so that come 2013, you don't get the same treatment by the canes that Shapiro is getting in the pen!

All these Chicken Little's dressed as a Gator, sounds like a Gator,a Gator no doubt!

How does it feel to be BANNED at the Sentinel?

You can't spell scum without UM.

This is all you need to know about this whole thing... Here's an excerpt from Barry Jackson's article about this last August in the Herald:

``I want to make the average fan aware of what really exists under that uniform,'' Shapiro said. ``They might be great players, but they're certainly not great people. I'm speaking of no less than 100 former players.''

Shapiro, 41, is angry because ``once the players became pros, they turned their back on me. It made me feel like a used friend.''

He was motivated by ``heartbreak and disappointment on behalf of the university, which I considered to be an extended part of my family.''

He said the heartbreak was caused by ``former players mostly'' and ``some administrative staff and coaches. I've always had the utmost respect for Donna Shalala, Kirby Hocutt and Paul Dee.''

Shapiro will use book profits to pay back investors in the alleged Ponzi scheme but cannot keep any for himself, Perez said.

The guy who got USC in trouble was a felon too.

Why is this a surprise to anyone?

Miami success has always come with a cloud of suspicion. Pell grant scandal anyone?

Miami likes to take credit inventing swagger but they should also take credit for perfecting dirty.

What a coincidence that Butch got fired for running a dirty program that the NCAA is investigating at UNC. Wasn't he the one that brought Miami back from the dead? I'm sure he ran a clean program while he was at Miami.Right.

Miami's success has always been dirty.

Randy ran a clean program and guess what? Miami couldn't win squat.

The truth will set you free.

You can't spell F--K you, or e-ffed up without F_U.

Gators are scrrrrred puppies. And after this season, when they see how pathetic they are, they'll be even more scrred, because come 2013 they will have a sophomore with minimal experience at QB. Oh wait, they'll try to make him run like Tebow. No wait./ This is a prostyle offense. Is it?

Gatorsam. You are a scarred pu55y. A gator. Synonymous.

Jacory will be looking to set the NCAA interception record this season.

All 300 fans at the game will be able to celebrate this milestone.

FIU football will be bigger than UM very shortly.Stay tuned.

Yes he is a scumbag and a criminal that is why he is in federal prison. He hurt a lot of people. That doesn't mean he doesn't have a story to tell or that players didn't take money. Also remember the University took his money and put his name on a campus building so they can't stick their head in the sand and claim there was no affilitation with this guy or that he didn't meet the definition of booster.

This is from InsidetheU.com? Aren't they the website that reported Gruden to UM was a done deal?

I agree... scUM continues to fall in a downward spiral whose slope continues to increase.

FIU football is on the way up, soon they'll be the college football talk of town. The only scUM fans left will be those that are still celebrating the Dolphin's perfect 1972 season, lol.

Butch Davis has been on the FIU practice sidelines last week, plus the rumors continue to increase that Big East is looking at FIU for 2013/2014.

Ponzi scammer is sentimental and upset players turned their back on him?Maybe they picked up he was a loser or person not to be trusted.Ever think of that?At any rate, I guarantee the U will open it s arms to this ..........investigation of sorts. They have no choice anyway. We certainly won t make things worse by denying the truth or lying like Ohio State did.The sooner they start...the better - as far as I m concerned. We ll just wait and see what plays out.

Ok, guys. I think that Double Super Secret Probation and a stern warning is gonna result from this for several reasons. 1) Look at the source! The guy's a bitter, jailbird who's upset that the guys he may/may not have given funds to have turned their back on him. 2) He needs money to pay off victims. Where else is he gonna get it? 3) Even if this did occur in 2001, the NCAA's hands are tied b/c of 4 year S.O.L. expired. 4) everyone since that time is basically gone, retired, or graduated.

As a result, the NCAA will do their due dilligence but they can't do anything really substantial even if they wanted to.

Does anyone else know of anything different?

Gator trolls are out in full force. I just wonder if UF boosters got their money back after Cam Newton transfered. Or if the same people that paid Crowder for his jersies paid Tebow to sign Bibles.

There's nothing dirty about UM. The same can't be said about UFelons.

First there was Uncle Luke
Now there is Baby Luke Shapiro
The payouts never stopped
The players were on the take
The coaches knew
The administration took the cash too
They named a building after the guy
scUM lives up ti its name

Finally, let's bring this out in the open, It's been hanging around for ages festering. Let's find out if there is anything to it once and for all. We don't need it hanging out there so the FSU's of the world can use it against us in recruiting.

You sound a little sour there Little Brother.

I guess "hypothetically" getting paid for jersies & getting caught up in players that later get caught auctioning off their services doesn't make UFelons dirty.

You're a joke.

UF: 5 good seasons in the middle of 99 mediocre ones and counting.

Pull your skirt down, Miss. Your insecurity is showing.

I'm done giving the U my love and support.

I'm going to start supporting my alma mater, FIU. With their on campus stadium, I don't have to drive 82338291381 miles to get to the games either.

And FIU season tickets are less than $50!!! Probably will be more once they join the Big East though.

^ Undercover Gator fan fronting as a UF fan.

*FIU fan.

"The guy who got USC in trouble was a felon too."

Hey "Damn it" I'm not saying that being a felon makes him not credible. I'm just saying that his motivation is bitterness and to make money to pay off all the people he owes from his Ponzi scheme.

He says he respects the administration yet he wants to try to bring down their program? Everyone involved in his allegations is gone but he still wants to expose the program?

Until I hear some real proof of anything, it just sounds like sour grapes. If there is proof then hold on to your hats, this will NOT be pretty.

From Barry Jackson’s Original Article Last August:

Five months ago, UM's website called Nevin Shapiro ``an ardent, devoted, intense supporter.'' A student lounge was named in his honor.

UM's website said Shapiro, who had a suite at games, contributed $150,000 to the athletic program; prosecutors allege he used ``stolen funds'' for that. Shapiro said he donated $300,000 to UM, and that $130,000 was returned to the bankruptcy trustee.

``I want to make the average fan aware of what really exists under that uniform,'' he said. ``They might be great players, but they're certainly not great people. I'm speaking of no less than 100 former players.''

Shapiro, 41, is angry because ``once the players became pros, they turned their back on me. It made me feel like a used friend.'' He was motivated by ``heartbreak and disappointment on behalf of the university, which I considered to be an extended part of my family.''
He said the heartbreak was caused by ``former players mostly'' and ``some administrative staff and coaches. I've always had the utmost respect for Donna Shalala, Kirby Hocutt and Paul Dee.''

ESPN doesnt even have this on anywhere, no story here. The NCAA has to ask the questions after allegations are made or they look on the take.
His book will sell though.
Didnt Bennie Blades on the U documentary film say ya I knew guys that sold drugs while they where playing?? How come nothing came of that??
Because he didnt say he was gonna write a book about it.

gatorsam, why do you post more here than on the gator blog? GatorAlum is lonely without you.

This Shapiro guy has no creditability.

he's a crook and a liar---don't believe anything he puts in that book just to make money.

Oh and FIU guy, lol, the Canes have been competing with The Phins and the Heat for years. Miami has enough Oyes to go around.
They aint worried bout FIU.
Hopefully FIU does well

UM ONE OF ESPN'S TOP TEASE TEAMS:
"Miami

The annual August tease: We've got our swagger back!

The annual fall reality: Swagger doesn't equate to a 20-21 record in ACC play and two fired coaches over the previous five years.

The U hasn't finished a season with a victory since 2006, when it took down Nevada by a point in the MPC Computers Bowl. Good luck finding that epic moment among the program's historic high points. The U hasn't played in a BCS bowl since it was a member of the Big East. It has some proving to do to get off this list in 2011."
