Gameday blog: UM vs. Kansas State

Herald Sports Writer Manny Navarro will be here to anchor the blog, answer questions and share his thoughts on both Twitter and our blog. Remember, inappropriate or obscene comments will not be tolerated and will be deleted.

SUN LIFE STADIUM -- Your Miami Hurricanes (1-1) will try to make it two wins in a row for the first time since knocking off Maryland and Georgia Tech last November when they host Kansas State (2-0) at Sun Life Stadium. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

> ABOUT K-STATE: It's hard to tell exactly how good the Wildcats really are. They struggled to beat Eastern Kentucky 10-7 in the season-opener. The Football Championship Subdivision Colonels (1-2) lost to Chattanooga last week and were less than two minutes away from an upset against K-State before quarterback Collin Klein connected with Chris Harper on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 1:39 to play to really the Wildcats. Last week, K-State rolled 37-0 over Kent State (5-7 last year).

Former Canes linebacker Arthur Brown leads the team with 19 tackles and a defense that ranks first nationally in three categories -- scoring defense, pass efficiency defense and total defense while also ranking second in pass defense and eighth in rushing defense. Offensively, K-State really is a one-horse team led by Klein,a 6-5, 226-pound junior who leads the team with 217 yards rushing and is 22 of 39 for 202 yards passing and 2 TDs, 1 INT in two games.

> ABOUT THE CANES: Miami, coming off its 24-6 win over Ohio State, didn't suffer any major injuries against the Buckeyes and figure to use the winning formula this week as last week -- a lot of Lamar Miller, Mike James and a defense that gives up yardage, but not points.

> MY PICK: UM 33, K-State 9. Unless Canes quarterback Jacory Harris starts being careless again with the football there is no reason UM shouldn't win this game and fairly comfortably. Scrambling quarterbacks always give UM trouble. But if Klein can't connect with his receivers, you don't have to respect his arm much. The story here will be UM's defense and how they hold an opponent out of the end zone for the second week in a row.

D line getting no push!!

TD KSU!! 11 straight running plays.... Defense UM?

11 straight running plays.. WOOOOOOW!!!

How can we not stop this non passing offense? It boggels my mind.

UM has no defense. FSU will stomp on this team, USF will romp. This is the 6th best college team in Florida (UF, FSU, UF,USF, UCF then maybe Miami over FIU)

I just cant understand it an 1 dimensional offense and we cant stop them...WHAT!!!

They have no heart, no spirit. Nothing.

The U was known for teams with fight, with spirit. This is a bunch of overrated HS kids who thought they could just show up and win and now are getting beaten badly by second tier teams like Maryland and Kansas State who have far less talent but have spirit.

Until Golden finds "Miami guys" the U will stink up the place like this.

Should of gone for it. IF K state scores game over.

Miami’s DT are slow and weak. 54, 99 are muscled out on a regular basis. No Alan Bailey to be double teamed this year that helped them last year. You have to pinch the DE and LB inside and then get burnt on the perimeter. These DT are on senior and a Junior not freshmen.

Look at FIU with no one over 300 pounds. Inferior talent yet 22 palyers bench press 400 or more compared to Miami with 7. The FIU defensive backs and line backers are just a strong or stronger that the DTs of Miami. What is wrong with this?

I am a Jusscary hater! He has had part of three seasons and still reminds me of Kyle Wright. When we had Marve and Berlin they would put it together at the end of the game. This has been a dismal decade, and we may be seeing the low point.

Damn we lost

1-2. This is going to be a long three years, canes fans.

UM SUCK , FIU THE TOP DOG OF FOOTBALL ;)

Golden needs to find players with heart. Four shots at a touchdown, from within the 5 against a second rate team and you can't get in.

3-8 at best is their final record.

lack of muscle in the DT and some of the OL.
The strength coach Swasey was a flop under Coker and Shannon and Golden kept him.

Horrible loss. Thanks Al.

season over

Way to go Jusscary. You ready for Morris?

This blog sucks. It only works half the time on my phone, nevermind hardly at all on game time. Shame on the Herald for making us pay for this crap.

The strenght coach Swasey was here with Coker, Shannon and now Golden kept him. His is a flop in that area.

U of Miami is an irrelevant program.

Not Al Golden's fault. He did not recruit the players that have absolutely no passion for the game. The NW guys that Shannon recruited are very talented but have no, absolutely no heart.

Thats the problem. UM should have BLOWN KSU out. They are far more talented. But talent isn't what wins. Preparation, execution and heart win football games. These guys couldn't tackle a QB whose no closer to Tim Tebow as a threat than Pewee Herman is to Mike Tyson as a boxing champ-yet he shredded UM.

I didn't know Shannon recruited the entire NW team every single year. I am curious to know why that school is always mentioned he something is discussed about recruiting?

Cant blame Jacory for this one!! The O Line had 4 chances at the two yard line and simply could not do it. It's part of our growth this year.

Good effort Canes!! Jacory haters....take ur arses on somewhere else!!! lolololol!!!!

You are absolutly correct sir! Stormin2011

That look like a Shannon type loss ooh wait thoose were Shannons players.. Play the youngins. The upperclassmen aint got it!!

@Wesleychapelmia

If K-State and Maryland are 2nd tier teams I guess theU must be 3rd tier.........Seems to me the players bought into the BS of your tiers and forgot they have to play.

Now I have nothing to be proud about. Thanks DA U, Thanks FINS.

Shannon got a number of key players from the NW national championship team, it was considered a recruiting coup at the time. Unfortunately they clearly were talented kids with no passion for the game and not any preparation-just showing up was good enough. That doesn't work at the next level and it shows.

Face it: Miami sucks now. We aren't within 1000 miles of being even competitive against even mediocre teams. This program, after sanctions will be DEAD!

Man that was a good game even though we came up with the loss. I told everyone not to underestimate K-State. And hey there is no shame in losing to them they are a good football team. The thing that worries me is our D-line play. We look weak but that will change as these young players gain years in the weight room. Jacory, kid I gotta hand it to you, you battled back after the int and got us close to pulling out the W. Jacory U looked alot better in the 2nd half today than last week.

With jokecorey as qb we will loose. Hope we don't win another game with the jokej12 at qb

Hey DNix, a growth year...Really? Do you remenber what happened before the season? We will prob have a growth year for the next 4.

I know that, but to blame it on those 8 guys is kinda lame.

I am tired of waitng for next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No shame in losing to KSU? Depends on what your expectation is.

If being an average college program is the goal you are correct. KSU is a mid level Big 12 Conference team, no hope of beating OU, Texas AM, Texas and will have a tough time with Baylor.

If you aspire to be a BCS bowl team, then losing to KSU is an embarrasment.

In the grand scheme of things this is not a bad loss.. Its all about conference games. War Canes!!!!!!!!

Jusscary has had three good quarters in two games. Berlin, Marve, Wright and now Harris. The slide is evident to total mediocracy. He is the new low point since probation! Bench him. Next season he is as irrelevant as this one. Sun Life will be empty by the end of this year if we don't.

@FlitnHillsFreddie

Precisely. If the players UM has "showed up" and had "heart" they had the talent to blow KSU out.

This is on the coaches as much as the players. Who cares if Golden leaves. Not showing nothing.

Absolutely sad. How the mighty have fallen. And with the coming probation and loss of scholarships, the scary thing is that this is as good a UM team as we will see for a while!
Get ready for 5-7 and 4-8 seasons. I've seen this script before when Butch Davis inherited a probation team. Let's hope Golden can do the same as he did and turn it around.
