Gaines talks winning TD play; Jacory said he'll be ready for Duke & other UM post-game notes

SUN LIFE STADIUM -- The mediocrity continues.

The Miami Hurricanes (4-4, 2-3 ACC play) still haven't won three games in a row since Oct. 2009 and they've got nobody to blame but themselves. Dumb penalties, blown coverages and an inability to execute when it mattered -- the same old losing recipe -- is what hurt them in Thursday's 28-21 loss to Virginia.

Here is some of what we learned post-game:

> Linebacker Jimmy Gaines, beaten on the game-winning 78-yard touchdown pass from Michael Rocco to Perry Jones, said he thought he had safety help in coverage and said that's why he lunged for the ball. Of course, Gaines didn't and Jones ran untouched into the end zone.

"Every play is full of one-on-one battles. On that play, I didn't win mine," Gaines said. "I didn't win the battle. I was hoping somebody was back there. I was just trying to make the play and I didn't. I have to make sure I use the proper technique, get him on the ground."

Of course, it would have been nice if somebody else -- say Vaughn Telemaque or Ray-Ray Armstrong -- were around. But they weren't.

> Quarterback Jacory Harris wasn't on the field for the final plays of the game. Although Al Golden said Harris has been "banged up" for a few weeks and needs rest, Harris said he'll be back for Duke. He finished 21 of 30 for 311 yards and three touchdowns and was sacked three times.

" I'm cool. No matter what you'll still see me on the field," Harris said. "Broken leg, whatever it is, I'll be there. Been doing it my whole career.

> Since climbing to as high as the third-leading rusher in the country (135.4 yards per game) on Oct. 9, North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Virginia have made it a point to try and take Lamar Miller (5-11, 212-pound redshirt sophomore) out of UM's offense. They've stacked the box with eight and nine man fronts, forcing quarterback Jacory Harris to try and beat them instead.

Although Miller had 93 yards on 27 carries and a touchdown Georgia Tech, he's been held to just 3.2 yards per carry over his last three games -- a total of 192 yards on 59 carries. Al Golden said that's not good enough.

"We have to examine the whole thing," Golden said. "I'm not going to sit up here and say it's one guy. We're just not running the ball as effectively as we need to and we're not staying on track on first and second down efficiency."

Harris said it's up to the passing game to make plays. "When teams stack the box we have the passing game open and I guess we don't enough there to win the game," Harris said. "I guess we have to step it up passing wise because teams are going to sell out."

> Receiver Tommy Streeter had a career-high seven catches for 176 yards and two touchdowns including an amazing 51-yard TD grab between two defenders.

"I just trusted him," Harris said. "I knew he would make the play. He basically had one guy underneath him and the other guy was just one-on-one with. So I said I'm just going to trust him to make the play. We needed something to spark us and fuel us to go forward. That was our momentum."

> UM, penalized just four times in their previous two wins, was flagged five times for 51 yards. The big dumb ones -- roughing the passer on Olivier Vernon on and incomplete pass on third down (Virginia scored its second TD three plays later) and a roughing the kicker penalty in the third quarter (Virginia missed a field goal, but ran 10 more plays after it).

"Clearly we had some penalties that were just absurd," Golden said. "We can't have those penalties and the mental breakdowns we did. The blocked field goal too. We weren't sharp and we didn't execute and that starts with me, period."

All of this beating up of the players, has anyone considered that maybe the Golden boy got out coached? We have Lamar Miller and yet we start off throwing the ball. What is our identity? Yea I know you golden jock strap supporters will say that he has to play with Shannon's players. Well if the U keeps losing AND THEY WILL, Not a talented recruit in the country will come to the U.

DarinD,

Lamar was getting stuffed at the line all game until the 4th Q. Maybe if we passed on 4th and 1 we would of won.

CANETILLIDIE....DH, the crowd looked terrible out there. What was there 20,000 people jeez how can we get recruits and we cant half way fill the stadium?

I agree with you man, pathetic and I don't even care that it was a thursday night game, it was pathetic. Honestly, if you think about it, the fans that were there are probably the last few Canes fans around. The rest have been jumping ship over the years and joining up with fiwho, fswho, fawho, ucf, usf and so on. I mentioned that with my friend last night and he agreed to it also. We're all that's left. We need to recruit 85% state of miami and the rest from other places if we want to see a boost in fan base. Home town players play best in their home towns. But that's a whole other topic completely and honestly I'm too depressed after what I saw. Forget the fact that the officiating was giving them the game for the entire first half which didn't help.

We can't give up.

We need a real strength and conditioning coach. This is crap that we get out hustled in the 4th qtr because guys have their hands on their hips. Garbage. We are the 4th qtr team. I miss Don Soldinger our former RB coach. Look at his resume and who he sent to the pros, thank you. Michael Barrow needs to look his LB's in the eye and asked what the hell are they doing. Honestly I miss the coaching staff that coker had fired because he wanted to cover his a$%. He blamed them for his lack of head coaching ability.

Can the HURRICANES PLEASE win 7 games.....Is this possible ?

I want to see a 9-3 FIU team destroy U in a BOWL GAME ON NATIONAL TV. That will be the NAIL in the COFFIN before the NCAA reduces U to 15 schollies a year.

i take blame for Jacory's Fumble.

Why Can't Miami win close games anymore? i / we regularly thrive in close tough games. Maybe, the team, Coaches included are counting to much on Hymn and not enough on themselves.

please.. FIU seriously..? Didn't you just get beat by FAU last year and spanked by Duke a couple weeks ago. calm down little bro it's adorable but you'll never be/beat/come close to beating the U. sit back down.

Hey CANETILLIDIE so now we are in to Coaching and I too am at a loss for words...but are you telling me that the Coaches do not want to win?...They are drawing up plays, but if the guys on the field don't execute, then throw them out and bring new stuff in...what is wrong with that plan is that it is not done the 'Canes way. Fundamentals and alternate plans are being done...Patience does not feel like the speed of sound but in our rebuild I am sure that it will be rewarded...Settle down and breathe again...
THIS IS A REBUILDING SEASON UNDER A NEW COACH.
Go 'Canes

FIU- Dont talk until you can beat Louisiana Lafayette.

Miami's 3rd string can beat FIU. As bad as Miami looked last night they would have strung 40 on FI-who. Please.

Go back to your community college

Dont be surprised if FAU come to your house and beats you all.

He you all- there were about 40,000 people at the stadium. When will you all realize and accept that Miami will never sell out? Ever? ever ever ever ever. Only possibly vs FSU if both are ranked. In 2009 when we played Oklahoma, there were 65,000 at the stadium. Not a sell out. Against Ohio State? Not a sell out.

So, you all please s-tf-u. the crowd was actually ok. What wasnt ok was that pathetic team on the field.

That ESPN chick Jen brwon or whatever- she's rocking. Quite the hottie. Makes Erin Andrews look like Shanana.

Can we please get Linebackers that can tackle, safeties that can play safety, and Tight ends that can block? Can we get rbs that can run one yard or two? Is that so much to ask? Please??////????????

Hey fcapo90,

Duke won by 4 pts, that is hardly spanked...Look at the stats, FIU dominated DUKE and the ACC refs were awful, phantom calls after crucial first downs etc... watch the replay.

FIU beats U hands down. Look at Ur sorry team, terrible coaching and players lack true passion for winning.

It is also embarrassing, as true a Miamian, to see that scUM Life Stadium full of trash people on national TV. You'd think they released 30k from the local jails. Bunch of shaved head goatee wearing cuban thug sissies !!!

Anyone reading this that actually graduated from Miami, I feel bad for the reputation you have as fans. All that scUM that adopted the program makes your school look 2nd rate.

1. The O-line was SUPPOSED to be the strength of this team. ??

2. The Safeties are overrated. Telemaque was SUPPOSED to be this Ball hawking safety. ?? And Ray has not done a SIGNIFICANT thing since being at the U. Just HYPE.

Just when they start sucking you in they seem to tear your heart out. Exasperated!!! Average, average, average for those of us still living in the '80's. Virginia is not a good football team and that will show itself by season's end.

Vaughn & Ray Ray are AWOL. Maybe they should leave. Bottom line: There was better coaching, more passion and more desire to win on the other side in this game. Proved once again, better players don't win just because they are better players. To the entire team, including coaches: shame on you!

Thought my team (Rogers Jr. High) was playing Virginia ‘til I realized I’m in OKC watching, the game on TV. not on the sidelines coaching.

Seriously, CANES' Defense makes the same mistakes in big situations that I'm trying to teach 6th ,7th and 8th grade football players not to(Like safeties knowing how to play cover 2 properly) Jr. guys have an excuse the CANES' don't. O-Line can’t bust a hole for our tailbacks to run through wet Charmin t.p. they’re massively overrated, there's no fire in 'em.

Brandon Harris was critized but, I would like to have him in the secondary rather than what we have at corner now.

Golden and staff were outcoached at times last night but, did a decent job, coaches can only show players what they need to do to win games, after that it's up to the players.

Don't give up on this progam yet Canes' fans give Golden a chance to get his recruits in place then let's see the results.

I give them credit, they didn't fold. Would have last year.

Probably doesn't matter but I really hope Va Tech doesn't wind up losing two games now.

As long as we beat the Seminoles I'll be satisfied with this season. UM has been competitive every game, I can't remember the last season where you could say that.

5 thoughts on the Va. game:1) First time this season opposition had better game plan than Miami and executed it. 2) If its 3rd down Va.made a 1st down.3) Lamar Miller can't break hand tackles now,not the same player. 4)Miami's offensive line is horrible in needing a yd or 2 in short yardage situations.5) Miami can't stop the short bubble pass or screen, and get nothing when they run it themselves.

Lots of good comments and analysis today.
That was a real tough loss to take. When
the game began, you could see a lack of fire and desire, missed field goal and other almosts. Not true for Virginia. So what is it about the Canes being unable to sustain a good thing? I thought their passing gsme was good and Tommy Streeter is a real talent. With the exception of the weird fumble, Jacory played very well. Our running game is non-existent. Agree that Clements should get more of a shot. He plays with desire. But, how can you not feel disheartened at a pattern we have seen over the last several years? Why don't our guys come out with more fire, especialy the O line? And our D is just bad at times, with flashes of strength at other times. We can be good, but the Canes have to play smart and hard, especially at the beginning of a game. Man, this one really hurts and disappoints Canes fans everywhere! Let's stomp Duke and regain some self respect! Virginia! My God!

fire the strenth trainer the players are weak at the point of attack and it has been that way for years

Agree with chubby and canes60.

All teams have to do to beat Miami is to throw bubble screens. Their OCs and HCs salivate at that. It's just too danged easy! Miami coaches on the other hand, (yeah you Fisch), try the hardest way to get points. Like fake field goals with Spence r Whipple, running with Mike James when Miller, hurt shoulder and all, was busting out 4 yd runs all day and Jacoory made several 4th down conversions with the pass. But Nooooooooooooooooooooooo, Fisch had to try to run it up the gut with Mike James, who couldnt get us a first down if his life depended on it.

Keenum from Houston threw 9 TDs as they beat Rice 66 -34. Seriously. We supposedly have the best athletes in the countrry coming out of hs,but they have a time getting 2 yds?

Who here can seriously tell me that Maryland and UVa has better athletes to the guy than Miami? Not in a million yrs. But the difference is that they are coached better. the fundamentals are better. they are smarter and more disciplined than these low-IQ arrogant overhyped primadonnas that come from Northwestern, Columbus, ST Thomas, etc. Give me a rb that does like that little #25 from Virginia and gets me 10 yds a pop anytime! Maybe Duke Johnson will be that kid. And for Golden to say that Lamar is being overworked when he carried the ball 27 times is poppycock. The ebst RBs (Lattimore, trent Richrdson, etc carry the ball>20 times a game). Wait till the NFL. Stop crying. Toughen up.

---------------------------------------

All I said was that I do miss the original coaching staff we had during the 2000-2002 seasons. But we do need a new strength and conditioning coach. That is obvious plain and simple. I never said that I want to change this coaching staff. They walked into a situation where they got hit with suspensions and have had to deal with losing starters for the season and trying to put a team together with whats left on the sideline. The thing is that I see quite a few good players on the sideline and they're not getting enough time. There is no reason in my mind that Lee Chambers and Brandon McGee should be starters. Plus from the beginning I have been saying that ray ray and tele are not cutting it. This is a long process and I'm giving Golden and Co. the same amount of time that I gave candy randy. That's being fair, no? I'm glad that after this season a lot of the "fat" of the team will be leaving and we will be working with a team that is comprised with more of Golden's recruits than candy randy's.

I still believe and will never give up, and never jump ship.

Just a poor game all the way around, esp on D. Somebody ha to take accountability for this.

Damn, I mean... dammm

I say no one is allowed to go home after this season for summer break. Everyone has mandatory gym and conditioning duty for the rest of the summer. If I was a player on this squad and coach approached us with this, I would call my mother and say sorry but gotta train. That's my mentality though. I can't speak for anyone else. I don't even know if the NCAA allows something like that but it would be interesting to find out.

Funny video I've seen on youtube go and look at it and see for yourself.

titled "miami hurricanes golden & art talk "

In this video, the way Art speaks about the Canes is how I personally think about it. Enjoy.

Damn man last night I was this close to knocking out a cadaver fan just to remove my frustration.

Let's look at the big picture.

This year is a throw away year.

We need to win 7 games to be bowl eligible (BC win doesn't count).

Then we self-impose sanctions and disqualify ourselves from crappy bowl game that we would play in this year.

Give Golden a few years to recruit and build his own team, especially a defense.

Even Jimmy was 8-5 in his 1st year. Come on. Be a little patient.

Golden has this team headed in the right direction. I just hope that he stays.

Here's another one from youtube that I love. Enjoy

Well said. But we do need a new strength and conditioning coach.

Time to revoke scholarships. If these guys keep on making dumb penalties, revoke their scholarships and bring in some players that will be winners.

I think we also need a stadium near metro zoo.

Will the real Hurricanes please stand up as your name is called... Jacory Harris, Tommy Streeter, Sean Spence, Anthony Chickillo, Lamar Miller, Travis Benjamin, No one on the Offensive Line, No tight ends, Beside Chick who else, please take the name of Ray Ray Armstrong off any awards and give it to someone who will not cover the run on 3-11.

Our Offensive line should be wearing skirts, and our defensive line should wear yoga tights.

Safeties, we might as well play the pass with 9 defenders and send the safeties blitzing because they love to keep their eyes in the backfield.

Ray Ray you are good. Almost too good to be coached and that is not a good thing. Play your part. Your number one mission is defend the pass first. Anything less than 20 yards from the line of scrimmage is not your priority. Trust your team to make the tackle. Learning this is just as important as Jacory Harris learning how to throw the ball away.

look we all know what is up with this team, they are just plain awful and play with no heart, ala shannon recruits..except a few like spence and a few others.. there are plenty of hungry talented freshmen sittin on that bench that i believe could make a difference,if just give it 100%...look this season is lost, how about putting some of "your frosh" recruits in coach golden and get them ready for next year..and probably win some games..

Time to revoke scholarships. If these guys keep on making dumb penalties, revoke their scholarships and bring in some players that will be winners.

I'm for that in regards to certain players.

Here's my list for all intensive purposes:
McGee - runs 4.27(40) and can't cover my abuela
Chambers - RB converted to CB, not good.
Tele - to be honest I never really liked him.
ray ray - put him on notice now.
whipple - should I say more. Get AJ some reps.
K.Thompkins - either put him in or cut him
Byrd - goodbye.
Bruneau(WR) - who??? exactly...gone.
Dunckel(DL) - jr.3yrs on varsity, no stats.. gone.

Plus its funny to me why we have 4 kickers and 2 punters. That's 6 guys doing a job that 3 could do.

Punters
D.Botts - soph
C.Dean - soph

Kickers
M.Goudis - fr
B.Hopfiner - fr
A.Irastorza - soph
J.Wieclaw - jr

Why not trim some of the fat off of these positions and that could be another scholarship we could give to a key position player. Just saying it's a thought.

This one hurt. Just when you start believing and start to think this team is headed in the right direction they lay a big fat egg. This has happened now for over 4-5 years. The O-line is not what we thought they would be. Can't run for a freaken yard when it counts. Defense is horrible. Only one three and out the whole game. Can't blame the coaching anymore. This "U" team is what it is. Average. We have made terrible QB's look like Dan Marino. Things could get worse. Can a fan really expect for recruits to come here when you have a poor record, half empty stadium and the NCAA about to lay the hammer. Golden may have a tougher task here at the "U" then he did at Temple. Thats if he even sticks around. The only positive right now is J. Harris. Ask yourself, where would this team be if it wasn't for him? Probably 2-6.

I think we also need a stadium near metro zoo.

I don't care where they put the new stadium as long as they build it. Hell they can use Ted Hendricks stadium in Hialeah for all I care. Or even traz powell stadium. Doesn't matter. If the city would allow it why not tropical park. People argue the topic of traffic but there was always bad traffic before when we had the OB so what would be different? Just give us a stadium of our own.

I think we should start a petition. Someone needs to GIVE us our own stadium!!!! CANETILLIDIE....DH get on it! We should Occupy Coral Gables until they meet our demands!

Gaines is the weak link....granted the D-line is tampon soft but his play has been atrocious all year long. That play just epitomizes his season. I'm sure he's a good kid, but he's the worst starting MLB in Cane history.

Talking about new stadium locations look at this youtube video, watch the first 1:39 and listen...

titled:
"Canes All-Access: Traz Powell Scrimmage "

I've played on this field and honestly I remember getting a special feeling of pride that I played on a field that great players have played on before me and went on to do great things in sports. Just watch and listen.

Go U!

Agree with taking away scholies. At the very least kick these unmotivated, lazy, undisciplined, arrogant, stubborn, soft, no-football wanna bes off the roster. Put kids in who listen and do what they are told. Kids who know how to tackle. Kids who can read an offense and study film.

Watching the little bugger from UVa #25 just slip off tackles over and ove rand over for 8-10 yds is disheartening. Chase Ford had one good catch. Then he got blown up over and over. Even Spence wasnt shedding his blocks after a week of hype from the Herald. Chikillo wiffed on a couple as well. these players didnt come to play.

Jacorry holds on to the daned ball too long. Also he hardly ever throws down to the check down. Its either a bomb, a sack, or throw it away (last yr it was an int).

I am sick of this.

Miami players: Do you know how you make us all feel? Do you know that when you sit there on 3rd and 2, when it should be basically an automatic first down, and you cant make the first down, it kills us inside? Do you know how tired I am of facing my workers week in week out and having to explain myself? What happened to Miami? Man, Miami looked bad, etc etc?

These players need to find playing time fast unless they are redshirted:

Dallas Crawford
Thomas Finnie
Asante Cleveland
Eduardo Clements

and more...

fire Andreu Swasey the strength coach i been saying this for years miami is weak at the point of attack. Are offensive line was twice as big as there defensive line and we could not move them or block. Are defensive line gets no pressure on the qbs that is strength coach.

golden was outcoach so let,s blame randy

Dallas got redshirted because he came in overweight (golden's words from a video I saw) and I think that Cleveland had an injury that held him back. Finnie has been getting in and had a nice stop against GT and I think 2 pass breakups. Clements looks promising to me every time he gets his hands on the ball. Someone else said it earlier that he runs with authority unlike Miller. If certain guys stay for their senior year ie:Miller, Streeter, Ojomo, Forston, Washington, D.Smith, Vernon; we can have something really decent tied in with the underclassmen that we have and the recruits that will be coming in. IMO ray ray and tele have lost their positions for next year. Tyrone Cornileus has been getting praised left and right and Dallas Crawford has lost the weight he came in with and will fight for his spot, plus Thurston Armbrister who is a freshman now and was highly recruited. We'll just have to see.

Got me fired up. Reminds me of the time we got Coach Kilmer to quit at halftime when he wanted give Wendell to go back in with a busted knee.

fire Andreu Swasey the strength coach i been saying this for years miami is weak at the point of attack. Are offensive line was twice as big as there defensive line and we could not move them or block. Are defensive line gets no pressure on the qbs that is strength coach.

Glad to see you posting with your usual fire, brother!
you are a true Cane!
We will come back under Coach Golden, so let's not abandon the ship!

Ive been saying it since week one these recruits are soft and not discipline until the shannon recruits are gone this is what youll have Oline linebackers and secondary suck!

Thanks man I appreciate but to be honest with you and everyone else last night was not easy to stomach for me and it's still affecting me today. I actually left my office early and told my employees to knock off an 30mins ago. Damn man so many things and so easy to fix and we just can't bring ourselves to get it done. I hate moral victories. Someone earlier mentioned how "at least we haven't been blown out of any games". F$%k that, I don't believe in moral victories. I can't hang that on a wall. I said it before, I'm giving Golden and Co the same amount of time I gave candy randy. It's only fair. I also said that I would give him this year and next to really get his recruiting in because by then the last of shannon's boys will be gone and it'll be all on Golden's shoulders by that point. What he does with it then we'll see.

What I saw last night was a poorly conditioned team that was huffing and puffing in the 3rd qtr.

Also was the worst officiated game I have ever witnessed in my life. Don't know how the refs made it out of there. The first half was practically gift wrapped for uva by the refs. There I said it. At least I'm being honest.

Instead of flipping tractor tires, the Oline should be flipping hondas as a unit. It'll teach the team work. They should also put on some harnesses and pull SUV's. Just saying it's a great workout.

WE NEED TO STAY THE COURSE.

DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I gotta say swassey hasn't done anything but alot of this is attitude as well. Has anyone seen anybody from our team put a big hit on anybody? I know I haven't. The guys on defense are in a transition year learning a new system but guys the loss is because of bonehead plays like running into a kicker, hitting a qb late, and Ray Ray running up in run support on a 3rd and 11 instead of staying deeper than the deepest offensive player. Those three dumb plays killed us. on offense Jacory, stephen Morris, Tommy Streeter, benjamin, I give you guys a huge salute. Lamarr miller needs to quit being scared to hit somebody and quit dancing so much and Mike James hasn't done jack squat. Hell play Clements he hits the hole wide open. But anybody stupid enough to blame this on the coaches are too dumb to watch the game. I thought there was high intellect standards at Miami. Not by the dumb plays I saw last night.

Dumb penalties caused 90% of this loss. Bad playcalling caused the other 10%. But that 10% is what sticks out the most because we were in position to tie the game twice even after the 90% penalty errors!

First we got the ball to their 16yd line. We had 3rd and 4 and got maybe 2yds. We previously converted 2 fourth down plays with a short quick pass to TE or WR. This time coach calls a power run which had failed all night! Bad call period.

Next we have 29sec and first play takes 11sec to execute for 0yds. Bad call. Simple 10-15yd outs in the middle of field for 1st downs would have taken us to 30yd line with 15sec to go. Spike ball on 1st down then you have 3 viable shots at end zone. Instead caoch keeps calling long routes that kill time. Final play does not even get to end zone so we could have a MSU moment.

In all of our loses one thing has seemed constant to me. We continue to be outcoached and out-schemed by the opposing team. UVA just lost at home to NC State last Saturday! How do we let them beat us. And that is what they did for sure. They beat us. We did not lose. They came here to win and they did. They executed to perfection and they out-schemed us again.

I know it's easy to point at penalties and players, but when you still have a chance to tie or maybe win after all that and you don't get it done because of very bad playcalling in very critical situations; you have to point the finger at coaching: AGAIN!

Go CANES!

Please Cane fans, tell me all about the different Scenarios how U can still make the ACC Championship game, win the ACC, win a BCS Bowl game and finish in the Top-10 springboarding U as a National Championship contender next year...

I really could use the entertainment...
