Gameday blog: Canes at North Carolina

The Miami Hurricanes (2-3) will look for their first-ever win in Chapel Hill Saturday when they take on the North Carolina Tar Heels (5-1). UM won last year's meeting at Sun Life Stadium 33-10, but against a North Carolina team depleted by injuries.

Gio Bernard> ABOUT CAROLINA: Interim coach Everett Withers suffered his only loss 35-28 at undefeated Georgia Tech back on Sept. 24. The Tar Heels rank 52nd in total defense (363.67 yards), 39th versus the run (119.17) and 87th versus the pass (244.50) and are led on defense by senior linebacker Zach Brown, who leads the team with 42 tackles, five for loss, 2.5 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble. Offensively, UNC has the fourth most efficient passer in the country in sophomore Bryn Renner (99-136, 1,305 yards, 12 TDs, 6 INTs), a star freshman tailback in Giovani Bernard (657 yards, 103 att., 8 TDs) from Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas and senior receiver Dwight Jones, who is second in the nation with seven TD receptions (37 catches, 605 yards). Carolina has scored on 16 of 19 opportunities in the red zone -- all 16 are touchdowns. In 21 trips inside the red zone, Tar Heels opponents have scored just eight touchdowns. UNC ranks eighth in the nation in red zone defense.

> WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN IT COMES TO THE CANES: UM's porous run defense figures to get abused again this week by Bernard and the Tar Heels. The usually slow starting Canes need to be wary of not falling behind by too much. Carolina hasn't allowed a first quarter touchdown this season and has outscored opponents 42-3 in the opening quarter and 94-42 in the first half. UM quarterback Jacory Harris has thrown for 837 yards, nine touchdowns and just three INTs -- and sparkled over the last 10 quarters. But his last trip to Chapel Hill wasn't a good one. He threw a career-high four INTs as UM lost. Redshirt sophomore running back Lamar Miller, who ranks third in the nation with 135.4 yards per game, is looking to record his sixth consecutive 100 yard game. Expect to see a lot of Miller early and often.

> MANNY'S PICK: UM 33, North Carolina 30. Nothing really favors the Canes in this game as UNC -- in the words of Al Golden -- probably the best team they Canes will face. Only, I'm not buying it totally. North Carolina struggled to beat lowly Louisville 14-7 last week and figures they have this one in the bag at home against a beat up and reeling Canes team they've owned at Kenan Stadium. UM has played out of its mind on offense of late while the defense has played with a cheese-like stench. I don't expect the offense to keep up this pace all season. But for this week, they will. I see big day from Jacory, a big day from Lamar, and a Wieclaw field goal in the fourth quarter that wins it for the Canes.

They almost choked again. Where was the offense in the 2nd half? My god, are you serious with this d? Sean spence doesnt make that sack its a heartbreaker again.

Miami is 3-3, but i am terribly dissapointed in how poorly lamar did. Even when super rbs are targetted, like lattimore, lamichael james, etc, they manage to get at least 60.

Lamar better be ready for gatech, otherwise that dream of his to be better than portis and mcagee fizzzz!

Best 3-3 team in the country. Ksu is for real. Maryland... Oh maryland.

Irrelevant. Your name says it all. Take your Charlie Romeo alpha papa somewhere else.

Cool Cat what a clueless idiot. Post something with some substance and we can at least drop the clueless part of your description.

ltc dolphin- 3 irreleveant is right. LAmar 29 yds? are you serious? Ill still take the win no matter what. Anyone can beat anyone. Wake beats FSU then gets stomped by VT. UVa beat GT? never though it'd be possible.

But Our running game is our strong point. How is it that Fisch/Golden isnt runningthe rock 30 times a game with the likes of Miller james and Clement? Sure go with thehot hand (j12) but in the second half, he should have run it till he couldnt run it again. Should have punched it in from the 9 instead of a fg. gave UNC a chance. Byrd should have made that onside kick ctach. that's as important as a receiving TD (in case he doesnt't realize it).

regardless, this was an important win.

jacorry: Seems you are "getting it" I don't know what your problem was in 2009 and 2010. Maybe injuries maybe your head. But if injuries, you and the coaches should have pulled you to let you get healthy. I apologize for calling for you to quit. As I see, it, you keep this up, you keep studying. You keep playing smart, and win out for the U, you may ahave a chance to play on Sundays. I take back what i said about you.

Irrelevant has not been shown to be right. UNC took the run away from us. Miller is playing hurt. As long as we could move the ball passing, why not pass??
We still have a qb that thinks football games are only 2 quarters long. A d that is a sieve, that means the o has to play all 4 quarters and score practically each possession.

People, do not forget, the offensive line of the canes were going up against several pro propects on the n.carolina defensive line per mel kiper and several other draft experts. so sometime a stalemate may appears our lines are worth crap, and sometimes is just simply strength versus strength, as we have several nfl prospects on the offensive line as well, J12 played a great game, and several more like that, he is earning himself some money, maybe not 1st or 2nd round money, but most def. 3rd or 4th round type money, heck more money than most of us are earning now

How did Sammy Watkins (Clemson) get past our "U"? What happen to recruiting this kid?

Sammy Watkins is a beast! Glad we don't see him in the regular season. Maybe in the ACC champ game if we get there, but the kid is for real. Looks like Julio Jones now and he's only a freshman. Went to South Ft Myers HS. Wish he could have come here but best of luck to him at Clemson.

And that's what I like about Coach Al when he talks about getting the right 20-25 recruits. Not everyone is meant to come to The U and its not because they aren't diehard Canes.

There are some kids in south FL that need to get away from here in order to have a chance to make something better for themselves and families. Sometimes you have to get away from the idiot friends that are heading nowhere fast.

So although a kid may have the talent and heart to be at The U, we don't need him here if his cronies are going to negatively impact his ability to perform and succeed here. There are few kids on this team that show signs of having the wrong folks around them and in their heads.

Coach needs to watch carefully for that in his future recruiting classes and I'm sure he will. Go CANES!

Al. Sorry but you have blinders on about Harris. His body of work speaks for itself, and he will more than likely go undrafted.
As far as Harris, you seen him ever play a complete game while at the U??
