The Hurricanes (2-2) take on the 21st-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies (4-1) at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Va. seeking to avoid an 0-2 start in ACC play. The last time UM started 0-2 in the ACC? 2008 when they lost to North Carolina and Florida State at home in back-to-back games. Saturday's kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. The game can be seen on ABC in the Southeast and on ESPN throughout most of the rest of the country (except parts of Texas, etc). Here is your Canes' TV coverage map.
> ABOUT THE HOKIES: Virginia Tech is coming off a 23-3 loss to Clemson at home a week ago. The Hokies haven't lost back-to-back games at home since 2002. The Hokies rolled to a 31-7 win the last time the Canes came to Lane Stadium. UM has only won one of the last five meetings. The Hokies lost five starters on each side of the ball from last year's ACC championship team including quarterback Tyrod Taylor. This Hokies team still has plenty of playmakers on offense, led by star tailback David Wilson (7th in nation in rushing), cornerback Jayron Hosley (3 INTs) and defensive ends J.R. Collins (leads ACC with 4.5 sacks) and James Gayle (3.5 sacks). Virginia Tech's national rankings on defense: 2nd vs. rush (58.20), 4th in total yards (249.60) and 29th versus the pass (191.40). The Hokies are also currently ranked 2nd in the nation in time of possession (35:48).
> WHAT TO WATCH FOR THE CANES: There have been two big injuries on UM's defense in the aftermath of the Bethune-Cookman win: starting strongside linebacker Ramon Buchanan (knee) and defensive tackle Marcus Forston (knee) have both been lost for the season. The Canes, ranked 105th in run defense, will suit up four healthy defensive tackles Saturday: Micanor Regis, Darius Smith, Olsen Pierre and former defensive end Adewale Ojomo. Tailbacks Mike James and Lamar Miller have also been playing banged up for the Canes, who on the positive side should get more production this week from sophomore tackle Seantrel Henderson. Hard-hitting safety Ray-Ray Armstrong is also back this week from suspension UM. If there is something the Canes may be able to exploit against Tech it's special teams. While that may sound surprising considering Frank Beamer's team has shined for so long on that side of the ball, Virginia Tech actually ranks 117th in net punting. UM's Travis Benjamin has had long returns in back-to-back weeks for UM and may be able to break one. In two games versus the Hokies, Jacory Harris is 10 of 27 for 153 yards with one interception.
> MY PICK: Virginia Tech 34, UM 21. The Hokies aren't as good a football team as they were a year ago -- Clemson showed us that. But the Hokies still have plenty of weapons on both sides of the ball and it's hard to picture them losing back-to-back games at home. Are the Canes totally overmatched? No. But the problems on run defense are very real. This team sorely misses Allen Bailey, Colin McCarthy and Brandon Harris, who all were exceptional on run defense. Ray-Ray will provide a lift. But the Hokies know how to ground and pound. They ran for 251 yards against UM a year ago. And against UM this season, that's all you really need to be able to do well to have success.

Let's hear the J12 haters now. Kid played with total heart and head, today. He's in the record books forever, folks. TDs, Yards and INTs. Suck it.

Jacory continues to shine along with Lamar. Now if only they had a defense.
Great game Jacory. Chin up!

So macandcheese one decent performance makes him. NOT!!!
How about that great clock management in the last minute?? Pathetic.
He kept us in the game, nothing great

Go ahead and call us LETDOWN U. Tired of investing so much care and love Into this team for stupid **** like this to happen. Canes nation is tired of mediocrity. Where was the basic common sense by D'Onofrio to say "clearly this isnt working.."
Posted by: xxhurricanesxx | October 08, 2011 at 07:24 PM
It was a team effort. It took everybody on that team to lose. The D, Golden with his fake fg, and of course, Jacory.
Posted by: TyroneJ | October 08, 2011 at 07:24 PM
Most of you on this board are idiots when writing about Harris; Harris is not our problem. The defensive play calling and players are the worst I have seen in our "U" history. J12 put this team in a position to win; Harris and Miller cannot play both offense and defense. Those players on defense could not make a play when it counted to save their lives; I say fire them all (the defensive players and coaches) and revoke their scholarships. Today's game said a lot about where we are as a team and program.

MIA3054LIFE.....YOUR AN IDIOT !!! DID JACORY BANG YOUR GIRLFRIEND OR SOMETHING?? HAHAHA GET A LIFE.....YOUR EITHER THE BIGGEST LOSER IN MIAMI OR YOUR EITHER 12 YEARS OLD....NOT SURE WHICH??
Posted by: jorge | October 08, 2011 at 07:25 PM
@Mia3054life homie it's not on Jacory. It's all on the Defense. That's who I put all the blame on.
Posted by: 850cane | October 08, 2011 at 07:23 PM
Most, but not all. We still had a chance on that last poss. All we needed was a fg, not a td. Is that asking too much? Why can't we have a winning franchise down here, bro???? Sick of mediocrity.

Another tough loss...to make crap bowl need to win 5 out of next 7. I Di dn't like RS but Golden not impressing me.
Posted by: DATRUTHLIESHERE | October 08, 2011 at 07:29 PM
Is it moi's delUsional perception. But hows is it, that Miami's NO-SHOW defense makes opposing QB's lool like ALL-CONFERENCE 1st Team QB's.
Hokie Logan has been average against his previous opponents. The exception was against Top rated Clemson last week.
Heck, even against east carolina Thomas had an average game.
Canes can't even play a soft arse zone!
No pass rush to speak of. Blitz once in awhile DEFENSE-less Onofrio!
Safeties are OVERRATED!!
U'all get the picture!!!

just when i thought there couldn't be a worse coach than randy shannon. i guess i was wrong because al golden is worse. and whoever the d cord is, is awful as well. gonna be another long season. AGAIN.

Worst coach ever. Worst quarterback ever. Might as well shut this team down.
Posted by: DonewiththeU | October 08, 2011 at 07:31 PM
First of all, I am sad at the passing of Al Davis. Many people used to(and some still do) consider the 'Canes, the Raiders of College football I know that people thought he was a crazy man over the last several years that he has ran the team, but what Mr. Davis knew and forgot about football, most owners and G.M.'s (Stephen Ross and Jeff Ireland for example) will never know or have a clue about. Also, this years Raiders look pretty good.
As regards today's game, I like Golden, but the D.C. STINKS!!! I know that Golden will turn things around with the program and that Dinofrio needs to get his system established, but this is pathetic! Jacory, Lamar, and the rest of the offense do not deserve this HOT GARBAGE that the defense is putting out on the field. I know that we are weak at DT, but this is ridiculous. We should have won this game and we didn't. We can't get one stop when we need it. After we went up 35-31, I changed channels and started watching the Oregon State and Arizona game, because I KNEW WE WOULD LOSE 38-35. When I had the nerve to turn it back to the game, I saw we had the ball on our 45 with 25 seconds left. That is when Jedd Fisch turned into Mark Whipple and we started chucking the ball deep instead of running shorter routes to to get in field goal range or to get it closer so that we could have a legitimate shot at the filed goal. I swear to you that the Dolphins (final drive against the Browns) and the 'Canes are the only doggone teams that have the ball 1st and 10 at midfield and don't even get a chance to attempt a field goal. Football and sports in South Florida stinks!! The 'Phins and 'Canes can't win a game, the Marlins owner is making a mockery of the team (he is also trying to come out of the closest, IMO (did you see the new logo for the team and the contraption that will celebrate home runs at the new stadium??!!) Next time someone asks me about the 'Canes or 'Phins, I am going to say "Lets go Heat" (with the lockout, that's another story all to itself).
P.S.- I know that close losses are better than blow outs, but I AM SICK AND TIRED OF LOSING ON THE FINAL DRIVE!!! Maryland, K.State and now this. It's just very depressing, but lets see how we look next week against North Carolina. Go 'Canes!!

Once again the Canes blows another chance to regain alittle of that lost Miami swagger. J Harris is a complete and utter joke. When does fire Al Golden.com start ?
Posted by: G Goforth | October 08, 2011 at 07:33 PM
Can't believe you Jacory haters. He played a great game. If the offense played 60 minutes, we would blow people away regardless how bad the defense is. Golden will get us back to the glory years.

Golden is such a fraud. Fake field goal, really??!? Penn State, my foot. This guy doesn't qualify to coach Hawaii!
Posted by: Rob | October 08, 2011 at 07:34 PM
THE TIME WHEN J12 HAS HIS BEST GAME IN 2 YEARS THE DEFENSE IS NO WHERE TO BE FOUND. WE WAS ALWAYS KNOWN BY DEFENSE THIS WORST I EVER SEEN BY A HURRICANE TEAM. THEY DONT LOOK LIKE THEY KNOW WHAT THERE DOING OUT THERE DC SOMEBODY NEED GET AND HIS EAR.
Posted by: MJECANE | October 08, 2011 at 07:34 PM
Maybe. jUst maybe Miami can escape with a win against Carolin next week.
Carolina narrowly defeated an AVERAGE Louisville team today at home. However, Miami has no fU1kin' defense.
In other words, it's do or die for Golden next week, because IF Miami doesn't win it's a stark possibility Miami has a LOSING RECORD this season.
At least AN OVERRATED fsWHO squad lost today!
Posted by: macjones | October 08, 2011 at 07:35 PM
NEXT WEEK GUYS....I TRUST GOLDEN.....CANES 5-7, NOT BAD.....

Enough with the ties, Goldy.

WHY NOT BLITZ? How many times did we rush 4 and let Va. Tech's QB sit back comfortably and make throws to wide-open players. Answer: Every time! If something's not working, then change it! Their QB was 20 of 22, for God's sake. DO SOMETHING! Make the QB make a quick decision. How hard is this to figure out?
Posted by: azcane | October 08, 2011 at 07:37 PM
Congrats guys on not giving up! I like this team's character. They fought to the very end. I see good things for this team in the future. GO CANES. In AL we trust.
Posted by: avalon2864 | October 08, 2011 at 07:38 PM
lol, Canes fans always spin it when they lose. You guys are a joke. Come up here to Louisiana and lets see what you little girls have.
Posted by: LSU | October 08, 2011 at 07:38 PM
Miami fires Shannon for this entire coaching staff.
Heck, the powers that be could've SAVED money with Shannon and still probably had the same record at this point.
All that was needed was to CHIT CAN that Whipple-less EGOMANIAC!!
Posted by: macjones | October 08, 2011 at 07:38 PM
HEY ROB AND DONE WITH THE U....YOUR BOTH ADDED TO THE IDIOT LIST WITH MIA3054LIFE!!!! GET OFF JACORY'S NUTS !!! AND YOUR AL GOLDEN BASHING !!! THANK GOD WE HAVE HIM NOW !! Posted by: jorge | October 08, 2011 at 07:38 PM
56 sec0nds to get the team to the 30-35 yd lines. Thats 40 yds at most.
Our defense sks. Badly. Va tech always figures a way. Even if they sk, they still beqt us. Filed with 2-3 star players and they still beat us. Why? Leather face knows how. But how many ncs do they have?
Zero
Our d silll sks. Ive met doofrio. He is a big fat clown. He sks as a dc.
Fire this s..b
But the defensive players must be held accountable for tnis garbage. My granma can play better defense
These coaches could have recruit,ed a real beast of a mlb last spring and they failed.
Karma. You p...ces of s..t
This team will lose next week to nc, to fsu, to ga tech, and will finish 4-7
Mark my words

I never seen stupid fans like this with the hurricanes .Jacory didnt lose the game the defense lost us the game so shut up.Miami played hard had heart and came back so if u like throwing players under the bus who kept us in the game its says alot about u as a person u dumb ass geeks who claim to be canes fans.
Posted by: MIAMI FAN | October 08, 2011 at 07:40 PM
Canes are the worst team in the ACC--- the record shows it , and yes they will have a loseing record and the D co-ord needs to go, this team could be undefeated if the knew how to stack the line and use safties. there is alot of room for incoming freshman as well , cause the upper classman save a few really suck. Loseing has become the standard at the U and Im no longer sure that is ever gonna change.....
Posted by: Keith | October 08, 2011 at 07:40 PM
jorgito, your boy Golden is a sham. Lets see how long this Golden era lasts. My guess is he runs off in the middle of the night, ala Nick Saban when he ditched the Fins. Nobody respects Miami. Bunch of little pansies, lol.

There's no way we win anything less than 5 games. That's a major improvement over what Shannon did here all these years. Lets just wait and see.
