Canes receive commitments from two in-state offensive stars

Al Golden and his coaching staff were busy bees this summer, landing a collection of 24 verbal, non-binding commitments before the start of the season.

Danny DillardAfter blowing out Duke Saturday, UM got back to work on the recruiting front Sunday, landing commitments from two in-state stars: Venice High running back Danny Dillard (6-2, 215) and Lakeland High receiver Ricquan Southward (6-2, 190).

Dillard, who grew up in the Miami area before moving to Venice when he was 9, told his hometown newspaper the Sarasota Herald-Tribune Sunday he chose the Canes over offers from Kentucky, Marshall, Ohio, Pittsburgh and UCF. Dillard has gained 724 yards on 105 carries for a 6.9-yard-per-carry during seven games this season, battling through injuries throughout according to the Herald-Tribune. He also has scored 14 rushing touchdowns, five in just more than two quarters against Sarasota Booker, and one through the air with five catches for 50 yards. Last year, he rushed for 1,245 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Ricquan Southward, Photo by: Michael WilsonThe 6-foot-2, 215-pounder is ranked as the nation's No. 32 running back by Rivals.com and the No. 92 overall recruit in the state of Florida.

Southward, a first-year starter for Lakeland who attended Saturday's game against Duke, has over 700 yards receiving and 13 touchdown catches in eight games this season. He told Canesport.com Sunday night it's "a soft commitment."

"I'll still visit other colleges just to look around - I'm set up to see Ohio State [Nov.] 19th," Southward told Canesport. "I've never been up there. Right now that's only official I have set up."

The UM offer was Southward's third offer, joining Ohio State and Mississippi.

Here is highlight video on YouTube for Dillard.

Hope these guys wind up at UM, glad to hear Southward is visiting Ohio State, one trip to Columbus is all it takes to cross that school off the list.

wow!

Golden,

These are good pickups, but where are DT/CB's? We DESPERATELY need those. EVERY remaining Scholie should be thrown at DT's especially. We have a good number of CB's committed but by looking at size and frame, it would seem 2 will probably end up safties. We NEED CORNERS and TACKLES, and why do we only have 2 O-Line commits. 1 of which doesnt count because he technically is from last years class. Someone please straighten me out if im wrong.

for real - Tebow is a bad boy

VASoulCane,

Exactly. If they can get that DT from Norland High, the cornerback and wide receiver from Miramar High, and safety from Columbus High down in Miami, this class would be hard core. I also heard that DT Eddie Goldman from maryland likes the U too, but we'll see.

@Anthony I wouldnt put too much stock in Goldman, he comes off as a bandwagon jumper, which also has me worried about Flowers(OL) might be a bit of a follower of Brown(LB).

Whats with Luther Robinson, Curtis Porter, Shayon Green, Corey White, and Forston? Am i the only one who thinks the staff should just tell them that their scholarship offer is no good. they are taking spots we will need, especially with sanctions coming. We need to prepare those spots now, so if they arent EVER going to play a full season, then it isnt right for them to be on scholarship.

Who is the Guard #67 Blocking for Dilliard? Watched the video the kid can open up a hole.

We need to be getting bigger and better DLinemen and OLinemen. This recruits are good, but we need to start getting NFL size linemen and coach them up to play like Hurricane greats. If they are big and have high football IQ then the coaches should get them and the coaches can finally earn their keep.

The previous coaches did wonders turning Jimmy Graham into a great NFL Tight End and we need to get back to having dominant lines like LSU and Alabama have. You can have all the skill players in the world like we have, but the one thing that is consistent with champions is dominant lines. One thing the ACC does not have is dominant lines and a consistant program outside Va. Tech. and one could argue that Va. Tech year in and year out have the best lines in the ACC.

watch the video who is 67 and 78 on the o-line there are some huge pancake blocks by these two dillard looks strong 62 - 215 at 17ish he will reach 230 by next year a big back for shoet yardage coach did say at least 5 times this year we needed to play tough in short yardage welcome

I AGREE ON THE DTACLES AND CORNERS BUT LOOK AT THE LINE THEY ARE BIG AND THEY ARE YOUNG LOOK AT PAST RECRUITS IF WE GOT ANYTHING OUT OF SHANNON IT WAS O LINE BUT GET ME A DOMINATE D TACKLE AND THE KID FROM GABLES HIGH AT LINEBACKER PERRYMEN LOOKS LIKE THE HARD HITTING MIDDLE LINEBACKER WEVE BEEN MISSING

Does stephen Morris really believe that he will be our starting qb next year? Won't we have Tate forcier? I don't think it's even a question if we do. Bring on Tate.

Ugh. Nevermind. Forciers gone to San Jose state

@inimounts: why would you want another robert marve?

I honestly know someone who talked with Flowers just this past week and Flowers is committed to the U and hopes to come in January!

ATTENTION CANESPACERS:

Don't be gullible

"Da Skreetz" is Soup, aka 86Cane

The "information" is nothing that can't be figured out by reading blogs, web articles, etc.

Why is it presented in obviously fake "street talk". Why wouldn't Soup "translate" it? It's obvious, because it's him. He thinks this "street talk" gives it an air of authenticity. If he was really getting some inside information by an insider that talked like that, he would just repeat the information in normal language instead of presenting it in it's supposed original "street talk", and let the info stand on it's own merit.

Just to clue you in 86, NOBODY talks like that in the 305.

You have been busted. I'd say nice try, but you're so obvious. Your ten regular bloggers are just humoring you the way a mentally ill person is humored.

By the way, how many more people are you going to ban, blog Napoleon? You have maybe ten regular posters and your fake skreetz BS is just a pathetic attempt to con people into thinking you're tuned into the inside.

It's just made up stuff, and it's obvious. Anybody can scan the papers, news, and interviews and put it into fake street lingo. Nothing is in those "skreetz reports" that isn't readily available.

You're a joke and everybody's laughing at you.

@inimounts,,,dude what are you talking ,,,we morris as our starting QB now, next year, it will be almost certain he will be,,morris has a stronger arm and he is quicker in making his reads...i think the coaches is doing harris a favor by starting him...to give him a shot at the NFL draft

It will not matter very much who we bring in as dbs; if there is no pass rush or ability to stop the run, our defense will always be a liability. We need DTs / DEs / LBs; watching LSU and ALA play each week reminds me of what we need in terms of DTs. We were three and four deep at that position in our prime and need to get back there quickly. With an awesome d-line, we could recruit 2 star LBs / Dbs and make it work. If Golden is going to use a 3/4 defense, bring in a few DTs who are 320lbs each. Bottom line; with a good d-line this year, we would be 7-1 or 8-0. Our D has been disappointing to say the least.

Welcome to UM guys!

I like the size of the skill position players they are bringing in, but I agree with most others here. We Need DT'S AND OLINEMEN THAT ARE BIG AND NASTY. Thats were games are won, upfront! D'Nofrio, Jethro (DL coach) and Barrow got to get in the Dlinemen! Thats the question Manny should be asking, "Where's the Beef".

Does stephen Morris really believe that he will be our starting qb next year? Won't we have Tate forcier? I don't think it's even a question if we do. Bring on Tate.

----------------------------

For next season it looks really good for Stephen Morris but there will be some competition. For one we have a transfer that sat out this year and will be eligible for next season in Ryan Williams(6'6" 220lbs). He was never recruited by Miami when he was playing at Miramar and did really well with back to back playoffs and so on. He transferred from some garbage school that had no Oline and had him scrambling for his life. Golden has given some praises for him in practice so we'll see. Then we have Preston Dewey(6'3"205lbs) who is very very similar to Ken Dorsey but with a stronger arm, great timing like Dorsey too. Plus there's another guy coming in but I don't have his name. Worst case we still have a small offensive package for AJ Highsmith who was recruited as a QB but turned into a safety. Then there's Gray Crow(6'3"220lbs) from tampa who looks like a gunslinger. Strong kid, great size. There's also David Thompson from westminister christian in south Miami where he plays both baseball and QB. He's a dual scholarship kid but there are rumors who might get drafted for baseball early.

A bunch of these guys will definitely get a good look for next season.

We need DT's and Secondary. Other than that we're good in every other position.

@CANETILLIDIE I still think we got the right number of LB's and as I stated earlier DT/CB's are what the staff should be sweating over. But we still need a couple more O-Line commits. Taylor Gadbois is coming for sure. Hunter wells, who they picked up late in the period last class has good size. But we need more. Last I checked McDermontt, Linder, Feliciano, Bunche, and Wheeler will all be 3rd yr players next year, we need to fill in the potential transitional gaps that will smack us in the face on the O-line if we arent prepared in time for sanctions, because then it will be even more difficult to not have wholes in your roster.

Signing 6 Wr's is the cute thing to do. Lord knows ESPN will slob all over you(Remember '08?), but we need LINEMEN, and unless these coaches have 2013 targets that they are gonna put the full court press on, they are really behind. All the LB's and Wr's in the world wont matter if there is no LINE.

@ VASoulCane

There's still a bunch of guys for the Oline behind Henderson, Bunche, McDermott, Linder, Feliciano, and Wheeler.

Fr.RS-Jermaine Barton(6'7" 305lb)
Soph-Jermaine Johnson(6'6" 320lb)
Jr.-Ben Jones(6'5" 310lb)
Jr.-Jeremy Lewis(6'4" 315lb)
Soph-E.Lopez(6'0" 300lb)doubt he'll get time.

Plus Hunter Wells that you mentioned earlier. Taylor Gadbois kid out of Georgia looks like a goon, I love that in a lineman. Heard he's a ride or die Cane so that's another star in my book. Don't forget out these underclassmen that haven't gotten that much time. These are some big boys and we shouldn't ignore.

I agree we need linemen offense and defensively. But also need corners bad. Next year we will be ok because Dallas Crawford redshirted along wit some other guys. But need the depth in that osition if we get hit wit a santantion.

Remember Ramon Buchanan will be back from medical redshirt aolng wit sorry Fortson. Also remember our guys will be in their second season into the system and coaches are playing everyone right now on the defensive side of the ball. We have played all the way to our 3rd team in all games, so we will have plenty of players wit experience next year.

So all the recruits this coming and next year will redshirt to give us depth but we need linemen.

All bout TheU

If there is anything the LSU and Bama game demonstrated, it is that Defense wins championships. Let's concentrate on the the big men in the trenches and we will have a shot at the ACC, (barring sanctions of course.)

Go CANES!!!

I've heard some good things about Dewey but he plays for a bad school in Texas. I'm definitely not impressed with Crow. Mediocre high school stats usually doesn't turn into high school success.

Whoops I meant college success. Either way Golden has done as well as one could expect considering the NCAA stuff now lets see if he can finish the season strong and keep the nucleus of this class together. We need to keep Duke and the boys at the "U".

@CANETILLIDIE

I see what you are saying regarding those guys, but what I was referring to was the fact the ones I mentioned are the youngest O-LINEMEN we have and THEY will be 3rd yr players, and the guys you mentioned are ALREADY 3rd yr players, that means we have a huge transitional O-LINE gap.

@rich

My previous posts agree with you DT's/CB's are the BIGGEST NEED PERIOD, and that IMO all available Scholly's should be thrown at those two positions.

Also, L. Robinson, C. Porter, M. Forston, S. Green, C. White, need to play or step aside and make room for someone who can play. It's unfortunate that they can't EVER play a full season due to season-ending injury, but we MUST make use of those 4 roster spots and the staff need to make a decision on those guys not to mention the fact that THREE of those guys were SUPPOSED to be contributors as interior D-LINEMEN

Did anyone else notice how much Danny Dillard runs like O.J.Anderson? He's pretty much the same size and has that gliding, sliding kind of motion combined with surprising power.

Next season's Defense will look a little something like this. Not including recruits.

Dline
Marcus Forston(6'3" 300lb)Jr
Olivier Vernon(6'4" 265lb)Jr
Anthony Chickillo(6'5" 250lb)Fr

That's some nice guys coming back to us.

LB's are

There's alot to work with here for all of these spots not including the incoming class that Golden has brought us. The future is bright..Stay the course and keep the faith.

GO CANES!

@VaSoulCane

I agree

C.White(Fr)was declared out for the season due to breaking his leg during preseason. Golden was praising that kid left and right for great downfield blocking and for having soft hands. He was at the top of the depth chart until he broke his leg. Hopefully he'll recover fine and be ready to get back into the mix. Don't count him out.

Forston needs to get his act together. Someone please smack this kid upside his head.

Shayon Green needs to show us why he's in a Canes uniform. Poor guy gets injured left and right. He's gotta heal up and show up.

Curtis Porter has yet to do anything. No stats.

Luther Robinson is the same as Porter. Nothing to show for his time here.

I still have hope for Forston and would love to see Green amount to something but these other 2 are dragging in my opinion. In regards to Cory White, we'll just have to wait and see in preseason how he looks. Hopefully he'll maintain his weight and stick to the gym once he's healed up.

I disagree about Porter. I thought he had won one of the starting DT spots but hurt his hand. He's a big strong dude!

I heard that about Porter also but since we haven't seen him we can't say anything, U know what I mean? He's been here for 2 yrs and still no stats and he was supposed to start as an incoming freshman. Hope he gets healthy and his act together so we can have a dominant Dline.

He started at Ohio Sate last year as a sophomore but got hurt and missed the rest of the season. He beat out Regis. He played in 8 games as a freshman. He will likely miss the rest of this season, redshirt, have an off season to get even stronger, and then come back and start the next 2 years. Luther Robinson redshirted his first year, played in 11 games as a freshman last year, and got hurt this year and has not played. He will be eligible to apply for a sixth year via injury redshirt, same as Fig, if he pans out between now and then. Otherwise, cut him loose after his 5th year at the U. I agree the jury is still out on Robinson. He hasn't been healthy enough to evaluate.

Penn State!!! The perfect program... Joe Pa, the most etthicalo coach in football. NOT!!! At UM, yes we have cheated and yes we are THUGS, but we are not CHILD MOLESTERS!!! I hope they bury PSU and their old molester JOE PA... Come sit on PAPA's lap little boy, is the new PSU cheer!!!

You truly are a sick person. Guess this is great for Miami right ?

Google former Miami Football Sports Information Director Rick Korch.

Nice, More 3 star dudes. We need difference makers not space takers. Look every big time team has 3 star guys that start but for the most part the big game players are 4 & 5 star players, of course it makes no difference what kind of star you are if you don't have coaching, which I believe we finally have.
We need DEFENSIVE TACKLES, PERIOD! Anyone who has watched us this year can see we are weak as butter up front. Everyone saw the Bama vs LSU game the other night and the one thing you saw were stout defensive line play and 250lb LBs. Our LBS look like High school players compared to them, size wise. We absolutely have to address this area, Quickly or the same show will be on next year. We need Cb's as well, that can play straight up man, in your face DEE. it's nice that Canetillidie gave us a run down of what we have coming back next year, but really who at Dee tackle will bring fear to the opposing team, a washed up Forston, Robinson, or Porter? They can't stay healthy enough to stay on the field. Pierre & Grimble were brought in to play DE and we had to play them on the inside at about 265 lbs apiece. Ojomo is 270 playing tackle. Yes, we have a bunch of bodies coming back, but of those guys coming back next year on defense, who this year other than Chicklo, & Perryman have distinguished themselves? Vernon, Telemaque, Armstrong, what have they done consistantly?

Welcome to the U guys.

@herbieibis

You're right about ray ray and tele. These guys haven't panned out IMO. And Pierre and Grimble moving to the inside was a drastic decision made due to lack of depth at those positions especially after losing Forston for the season and Regis got suspended for a game. Darius Smith is doing a fine job plus has lost 30lbs since being here. Remember that list I mentioned doesn't show the incoming guys, only the ones that we currently have that will not go into the draft. Personally none of them should be thinking NFL at all. If they stick around, we'll have depth at those spots granting that we don't have anymore injuries. I would like to see the Dline like this

Vernon(outside)
Forston/Ojomo
D.Smith/Regis
Chickillo(outside)

I really think that having Chick and Vern on the outsides at the same time will help a ton while Forston and D.Smith plug the middle for next season.

For the LB's
Gaines/Holton/E.Johnson(OLB)
Buchanan/Perryman(MLB)
Cain/Paul(OLB)

At least we have some DB's that didn't play this year but will get their chance for next season. Then there's the new guys coming in. Vernon Davis out of Coral Reef high is literally the reason why they're 7-1 this season. His stats speak for him. Amos Leggett is doing a tremendous job at S.Miami High not only scoring on punt and kick returns but also scored on a nice reverse that went for 60yds and receiving as well. I personally can't wait to see Dallas Crawford once he gets he RS done with. Thank god that Lee Chambers is gone and Brandon McGee will definitely lose his spot next season. He'll be the starter in the beginning of preseason but that will be taken care of quickly. He should be a WR not a DB. He's fast as hell but can't cover for his life. Straight line speed only for McGee.

Next year I see Finnie, Crawford, Armbrister, AJ, Rogers, and Payne giving hell to everyone else who wants a spot on def.secondary. We'll see.

Go Canes all day everyday!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like i said early its nice that the coaching staff is playing alot of players on defense so they will have game experience for next year. But next year the recruits for this year WILL REDSHIRTy. Only because we will be deep in all the positions on defense.

But another great thing is they all will be in their second season in the syatem. And not only that our sorry ass defensive coordinator will hopefully have his PLAYBOOK install and have more trust in these players.

If these players dont have the confidence next year bench them quick, no excuses they been in your system 2 years.

Not only that but hopefully our STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH can get these guy bigger, stronger, and faster.

We look promising for the future. Mane our Offense going to be UGLY(on fire).

Welcome to the 'U' guys. Stick to your commitments and help us get back to the top. Chris G., I agree with you 100%. This situation at Penn State goes beyond football. Joe Pa, did not molest anyone, he had a pedophile on his staff. This guy coached people like Lavaar Arrington, Courtney Brown and numerous other star athletes for years. I don't think that they knew about his issues either. Like many pedophiles he hid his disgusting acts well. Even with all the garbage that UM fans have taken over the Nevin Shapiro situation, I can see why UM fans would be ready to bash Penn State, but NO UM fan should be happy about this situation. Sandusky's situation is bigger than football. The children that this sicko has attacked and destroyed their lives are the only victims here. This is not a time for UM fans to gloat.

Rich. That is an unwarranted comment about the d coordinator. Instead you should be upset with the dumba_ _ players that are not capable of learning plays and being disciplined enough to be trusted.

I think it will be a tough, close game but the Noles will win on the last possession of the game at home. But we have to keep in mind the teams they have beaten this year and their current records:
Louisiana Monroe 2-7
Charleston Southern 0-9
Duke 3-6
Maryland 2-7
NC State 5-4
Boston College 2-7
These are not unbeatable teams as their records show. I would suggest that the Noles were favored in every one of these matcups and were absolutely expected to win by anyone with any sort of college football knowledge.
Now the teams who’ve beaten em.
Oklahoma 8-1
Clemson 8-1
Wake Forest 5-4
Clemson and OU are excellent teams who have proven they can beat just about anybody out there. Wake- Not so much.
My point being that the Canes have played some tough teams as well, but have been inconsistent week to week, beating a good tem and losing to some schmucks. All of our suspended players have been back several weeks and are now into the system with the exception of Aldarious Johnson at wide receiver. We have excellent punt and kickoff returners and teams. They really have beaten only one team with a winning record this year and had best be up for this test. Limit penalties, limit turnovers, and force turnovers by our aggressive rush and hard tackling in the defensive backfield. The team with the most possessions usually wins in this matchup and, as usual, field position after a turnover is key.

All Bout TheU

@Itcdolphin

How can our team EVER be consistent on the field if we as fans, arent. We provide the life for the stadium WHEREVER it is located. We provide the national swag that the whole country still has to check on every week no matter what our record is. We have to be consistent in how we treat/support our coaches/players/fellow fans.

D'onofrio has only been in position for 11 months, it is safe to say he has a way to go before anyone can say he's doing his job, because stats/scores do not lie.

rich may not have needed to go that far, BUT let us all remember how Patrick Nix(O-Coordinator), and Tim Walton(D-Coordinator), both under Shannon were eaten alive by fans, the press(Manny, Susan, etc..), and by former players even after their very first years in their respective coordinator positions. If by the end of next year nothing has changed, then the staff should reevaluate the defensive leadership.

@itcdolphin u are completely right if freshmans can trust the scheme or [;ay hard these lazy as$ upperclassmen can too.

By the way i shouldnt say we will lose, I like to sike myself.lol

play

Give it till the end of next year. By then guys have already gotten this system and positions will most likely get solidified. If by then there is still a problem with the defense, we can criticize. By then there shouldn't be excuses of any kind. Obviously the defensive scheme is set up to have DB's playing off their man probably 80% of the time giving up lots of first downs. We need to have our guys playing man up. We did last year and we were rated 5th in pass defense while now we're ranked 66th by espn.com. Personally I can't wait to see what our DB's will look like next year.

GO CANES

I watched FSU play BC last Thursday. They seem to have some good speed on offense....but so do the Canes. For some reason I'm now liked "in AWE" of their offense. I think if we play smart on defense we will be ok. I think EJ can be baited into making some bad decisions...he surely does not "scare me". I think Ohio States offense last year was ALOT better then FSU'S O this year....and we held our own. I'm optimistic about this week.

Missing in action OL,DL... why does he keep recuiting 3 star skill guys instead of nasty linemen... Hasn't Golden seen the D play... Its awful to say the least... instead of a Beer I drink pepto during games!!!

Rich, regarding your fine post "Posted by: rich | November 07, 2011 at 02:59 PM.....

I'm loaning you some "h's" to go along with the "wit's."
hhh LOL

Seriously, you made 2 great [points...getting Ramon back and having 2 years in D'Nofrio's system will surely help.
I do think we need some big boys in the center of the D, and a terrorizing pass rusher.
