Former Canes assistant Don Soldinger plans to keep new recruit Jamal Carter in line at Southridge

Even at 67 years of age, Don Soldinger still has plenty of bite in his bark.

Photo
Southridge safety Jamal Carter shortly before making his announcement Thursday to commit to UM.

The former University of Miami assistant -- who helped mold some of the best running backs to ever wear a Hurricanes uniform and has two national championship rings -- was drawing up plays inside the Southridge High locker room Thursday afternoon when he was stopped and asked to give his thoughts on the Canes' latest Class of 2013 commitment: senior safety Jamal Carter.

"Who? The kid who [is built] like Tarzan and hasn't done anything yet?" Soldinger responded in a room filled with Carter's teammates. "What about Jamal Carter? What's he done? Third team All-Dade? That don't mean [expletive] to me."

Soldinger, as fiery and honest an assistant coach the Hurricanes have ever had (he was there from 1984-88, 1995-2005), has never been one to hand out compliments easy. He's been around the block too long. If you want to be praised, you have to earn it.

And as the new strength coach at Southridge High -- a program under the direction of his former USA Today National Defensive Player of the Year Lamont Green (1993) -- Soldinger has taken a special interest in Carter, the Spartans' best player.

"I'm not going to let him get away with thinking he's better than he is," Soldinger said. "Because he can be pretty special if me and Lamont can kick his [expletive] into shape."

Carter, rated the 16th best safety in the country by 247Sports, "isn't a bad kid" if you ask Soldinger or Green. He's got a 2.6 GPA and scored an 18 on his ACT -- good enough to get him into UM when he signs in February according to Green. But while Green says Carter (6-2 3/4 inches, 215 pounds, 4.4-speed in 40) "has a little bit of Sean Taylor type playmaking ability," he also says the 17-year old senior-to-be has room to grow when it comes to maturity.

"I think what happened before we got here was he had the freedom to show up a little late to meetings, practices and didn't have to pay the consequences," Green said. "You know Coach [Soldinger]. If the meeting is at 2:30, he wants you here at 2:20 ready to go. Jamal is getting better at it. He and the rest of the guys here are learning we run a tight ship."

Soldinger said he brought in former Canes running back Clinton Portis to speak to the team earlier this month. Carter, he said, was the only player to miss the meeting.

"Pissed me off," Soldinger said. "I really wanted Portis to talk to him, help get his butt in gear."

Soldinger has extra incentive to make sure Carter gets his butt in gear. Carter's father Terrence Carter was a star cornerback on Soldinger's 1991 state title team at Southridge.

"He signed with Maryland. Three days later he was back home," Soldinger said. "I hate to see talent wasted."

If Soldinger has a say about it, this Carter won't fall short.

Soldinger said he's already been on the phone a few times over the past year with offensive line coach and close friend Art Kehoe to give the Canes updates on Carter.

"You know me, I don't sugar coat anything," Soldinger said. "If he's screwing up, they'll know about it."

> Green said Carter recently power cleaned 270 pounds and squated 515 pounds.

"I think he's a natural safety. But he has the ability to play corner, safety, move into the box and play nickel linebacker too," Green said. "The sky is the limit for him. He can play offense, too. There's a lot of things his skill level allows him to do."

Last season, Carter returned seven punts for touchdowns. He said special teams is a big part of his game.

"I grew up admiring Devin Hester because he always took all the punt returns back," Carter said before unleashing a little Canes' swagger. "You saw my highlight reel right?"

One thing the Hurricanes have done since National Signing Day in February shut the door on some of the best defensive backs in the country who are in their backyard. If you close your eyes you can almost picture a South Florida dream team in the Canes' secondary: Northwestern's Artie Burns and Miramar's Tracy Howard at cornerback and Columbus High's Deon Bush and Carter at safety.

Carter said building chemistry with those guys won't be hard.

"I grew up playing with Deon on the Palmetto Raiders," Carter said. "I've known him since I was a little boy. He was a running back and I was a cornerback. I can't wait until we can be teammates again next year."

Come on pig. Blog about us being delusional clucks your just as sad and patheic as the so called delusional clucks. I'm sure you know so much.

Funny how we keep getting top recruits and Curse Piggy doesn't take the hint that his constant trolling is having ZERO impact on the local recruits.

Maybe if he took his lies to Gator Clause he might find someone there to agree with him.

It's a good thing Ur getting these soon to turn "soft commits" because with the present non-talent on the current U roster, why won't the average kids that can't play for the BIG SEC Schools not look at U for immediate playing time... It ain't Golden or Ur program. It's kids that want to stay home and see the field right away because the present talent sUcks...

Typical two-faced, forked-tongued Cane clUcks...

2012- 1 position player barely named to the Preseason All-ACC 2nd. team and it's, "I don't pay attention to preseason predictions." "I could careless." "It's nothing more than a popularity contest."

2011- Mutiple, underperforming, over-rated players named to preseason All-ACC teams and it's, "We're loaded!" "Look how good we are." We're as talented as any team in the country." We'll go 10-2, ACC Champs and BCS Bowl game with all this hidden talent."

So what's it now U delUsional about to go 5-7 Cane clods ? Go all Barbrady with the, "Keep moving, Nothing to see here, move along now," Or is it, "The voters don't know all the top secret top talent Golden has assembled ! We'll have many Post-Season All-ACC players, 8 Freshman will be ALL-ACC and we'll finish strong battling for the ACC Coastal and then WE"LL BE BACK NEXT YEAR !!!"

NEWS FLASH CLuCKS ... Ur ranked around 50th. on average and Ur going to finish near the bottom of the 5th. ranked (actually 6th. since Pitt put 70 on Ur Champs) Conference in College Football... But U blindasbatsheet baffons will cry to the heavens that Ur right on the verge of being a contending program. Being a loyal, optimistic fan is great, but not at the cost of looosing all Ur objective, "intelligent?" credibility.. U AllCaneThangCircleJerkers... The brainwashing only works amongst Urselves and ALL outsiders (the entire Country North of Lake Okeechobee) just chuckles, shake their heads and feels sorry for U thinking wow, they've evolved into Notre Dame... But actually worse.

Gotta admit though... Ur Punt team shoUld be just AWESOME this season !!!

Hola ARTY !!!... 2-adays in 1 week Bro !!!

Five-star cornerback commits to Gators

By Zach Abolverdi
Recruiting beat writer

Published: Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 6:17 p.m.

Florida got some early recruiting momentum going for Friday Night Lights with the verbal commitment of five-star cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III on Thursday.

The Tampa Wharton standout broke the news on Twitter following his unofficial visit to UF.

“I can officially say I am committed to THE University of Florida,” Hargreaves tweeted.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Hargreaves chose the Gators over Clemson, Vanderbilt, Miami and Notre Dame. ESPN ranks him as the top player at his position and No. 4 overall recruit in the nation.

With his pledge to UF, the Gators now have 18 commits and eight ESPN150 members.

Mmmmmmmmmm Mmmmmmmmmmmm Mmmmmmmmmmm ... The Rich gettn Richer while U continUe to fight over meat scraps left on the BIG BOYS discarded bones... Por poor Cane fan always poping off while taking a step forward only to find U've lost yet Two and Three more steps to the MIGHTY GATORS... # 1 Ranked 2013 CORNER combined with the #2 Ranked 2012 CORNER Brian Poole and both ranked ahead of anything U got or will ever get...

sUck it ClUcks !!!

SEC! ALABAM! SEC! SEC! LSU! SEC! SEC!

Five-star cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III committed to Florida on Thursday, according to Gatorbait.net.

Hargreaves, listed at 5'11" and 185 pounds, received offers from nearly 20 universities in the courting process, but he ultimately decided to commit to the Gators.

The star cornerback from Wharton High School in Tampa, Fla., is ranked fourth overall among all 2013 recruits by ESPN, and he's the top-ranked cornerback. He plays solid man and zone coverage, exhibits impressive ball skills and is a very instinctive player out on the field.

Hargreaves' ability to excel in both man and zone coverage makes him one of the most promising all-around cover corners in the past few years. Beyond his quickness, explosiveness and strength, he's also a very smart football player with a nose for the ball and an impressive knowledge of the game. He's already shown the ability to read routes very quickly and make up ground in a hurry.

Hargreaves also exhibits a strong leaping ability, which allows him to bat down balls against taller receivers, and his balance, fluidity and positioning skills make him a threat as a ball hawk.

This continues a fantastic recruiting season for the Gators, whose 2013 class was ranked third overall before Hargreaves even committed. Before landing the prized corner, Florida already had 17 commits, including seven in the ESPN 150. That includes running back Kelvin Taylor (No. 22 overall), defensive tackle Caleb Brantley (No. 31), linebacker Daniel McMillian (No. 43) and receiver Ahmad Fulwood (No. 47).

The Gators went 7-6 last season (3-2 vs. SEC East), culminating in a 24-17 Gator Bowl victory over Ohio State. The team gave up just 167.3 passing yards per game—11th in the nation.

It appears Florida is primed for more brilliant defense down the line.

.

It woUld appear so hUh Cane ClUcks. Come on, U can admit it ... U enjoy those Safeties Bush, Burns and Carter. NEITHER of the three whom can play Corner at the next level now ya here... Now tell me if I'm lying...

There U go ... happy ?

This kid sounds like a problem that we really don't need in Coral Gables. Kid is already struggling getting to meetings. Lack of character. Bad look for The U.. The kid won't last 1 semester

Soldinger said he brought in former Canes running back Clinton Portis to speak to the team earlier this month. Carter, he said, was the only player to miss the meeting.

"Pissed me off," Soldinger said. "I really wanted Portis to talk to him, help get his butt in gear."

Guess who just got the 9th rated prospect in all the Land. The Mighty Gators! Vernon Hargreaves baby!!!!! You can keep the clown who misses Clinton Portis give a speech to his high school team. we'll take the top 10 recruit over your sorry south fla. kids any day. what's the line on today's optimist football game between the kendall panthers and the liberty city bullets? Gators > Hurricanes

Soldinger has extra incentive to make sure Carter gets his butt in gear. Carter's father Terrence Carter was a star cornerback on Soldinger's 1991 state title team at Southridge.

"He signed with Maryland. Three days later he was back home," Soldinger said. "I hate to see talent wasted."

.

Yeah right... State of Miami...

It's a good thing Ur getting a few of these local "soft commits" because with the present non-talent on the current U roster, why won't the average kids that can't play for the BIG SEC Schools not look at U for immediate playing time... It ain't Golden or Ur program. It's kids that want to stay home and see the field right away because the present talent at dUh U is SUB-PAR (check the ACC 4 deep All Conference teams)... And when they qUit and when Carter qUits or gets booted all he has to do is hop the Rail to Dadeland then the US1 SouthboUnd back to the 'Ridge...

dUh U: Some Mythical Land Called the State of Miami that Other Top 10 Programs Poach from that an 80 year old pipe smoking Coach made up in the 1980's and now foam fingered wearing living in the past Cane Clods still blindly spoUt off about ...

There's you.

Here.

All day every day.

Changing your name every post so it won't be quite so obvious how pathetic and worthless your life is.

Hey Gator Boy, how's Tracy Howard taste in YA' MOUTH!!!!!! HAAAAAAHAAAAA!

who is the hater that keeps posting???? Golden is bringing them in....LIVE WITH IT.

If this kid had half a brain he'd leave the University of Coral Gables and go to the REAL University in Miami!

I hate these fffing haters,,,why even post you fffing hater,,,Golden is bringin in top notch talent..these athletes are not stupid,,they have a brand name college in thier back yard,,they notice deon bush and tracey howard stuck around, and they are attracting talened dbs this year, and next year as well...thats why it so important to keep the best talent home...The U secondary will be scary good come 2013...and 2014

Welcome to the U, Jamal! We're proud of you and the other commits deciding to join the Canes -- you're all true canes -- you're not listening to all the junk out there and the "manufactured" storm by Yahoo... It's all about the U. Keep up the hard work with Coach Soldy and you'll be in good shape to be a major contributor towards the Golden era!

Welcome aboard!

This blog is still an pile of crap. But I'll comment anyway. Nice getting a top kid. But it's going to be long few years before we see much fruit born of the recruiting, with sanctions coming it's going to be years. The one good thing, we are in the ACC, if we would have went to the SEC we would be dead DOA.

i have theories. only time will tell

time...

U'll see

Just one question Why do SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many of these gator fans care about what UM is doing? We are not the talk of the NCAA right now. Compare yourself to Bama, LSU, SC or UT. Florida does not even want to play UM in Football. Take care of your team and we will be fine.

Saw fils of this guy (U-TUBE) returning punts, kickoffs and receiver and he is sensational. He will play in some capacity starting as a freshman in the UM system

You have an agenda.

scheme.

crime that i will never commmit

quite an imagination

I have

Why is it that whenever a Gator posts they appear stupid, arrogant but good at abusing the English language? Are there any graduates there who have done anything with their lives? If so, then they obviously aren't the ones who post......

Gator trolls- Yeah you keep getting all these 5 star recruits like Hargreaves, like Brantley and the outcome lastyear was a.... 6-6 regular season! with the Gatorade Nat player of the year at QB!!!! LOL. You all suck a55 face it. The mighty gaytrs have been inthe top 5 recruiting classes the last 6 years! Ever since tebown left, you all havent got sheet. You are desperate, you are jealous, you are the pathetic wannabe mighty gaytrs

I just hope this kid isnt a jive turkey. Soldy makes him sound like half the highly touted kids all across the nation who put on these ridiculous "commitment" shows clowning around and what not, then become major undisciplined busts when they get to the real world of D-1 ball. He's got 1 year to mature. Youbetter believe Muschump in traylor ville and the rats in Tallahassee will keep trying to sway this kid. But with Soldy as one of his coaches I am sure he's solid with the U- not to mention the education that he will get at Miami is embrassingly richer than the diploma mill at UF and that glorified technical college in Tally

Wasn't the Gators' Gatorade player of the year injured for the rest of the season in the 4th or 5th game of the year against the eventual national champion? Maybe I'm wrong but didn't he also pass for 198 yds in 1.5 quarters of football against said national champions?

I'm sure lining up a bunch of 5 star kids that may or may not pan-out is a scenario Golden & Co have wet dreams about.

1-6

Yea, that's what the Gators have done to this sorry delUsional team here in SoFlo in the last 30 years.

Lmao at this dUmbass everyday!!!

So if he says the Gators are superior then they must be. Say it loud enough and it will come true. Copy and paste a 1000 times to make it true.

Go undefeated for once, then we can talk. 5 is still larger than 3.

I'm a Gator fan. I puff my chest out for teams like Bama and LSU because my team sucks.

When your team sucks, cheer for your conference. Only in the SEC!

I listened to a interview that Dan Sileo had with Clinton Portis. It is a great interview. Funny and informative.
They joked about which of their two recruiting classes at UM was the better. Sileo's 85,86,and 87, or Portis's 99,00, and 01.
I think the 87 team had more heart, and determination. Meaner might be a better way to put it.
The 01 team was just talented. They were just superior than their opponents.
The one thing they both had in common they said was they put their egos aside and were a team. They put the parting aside for the team.
I feel that recruiting is a fine line between getting players that are hungry, and the talented with low egos. Just because a kid has 4 or 5 stars does not mean he will be great for your team. To many "look at me not him guys" can kill a talented team. You need some talented, and hungry guys to balance the team out. Bring the "me" guys back down to the team.
A coach to not play favorites, and let them know they are entitled to nothing but what they have earned on the field.
Missing a team meeting is not good. I don't know why Jamal missed the meeting. Hopefully it will be his last missed meeting, and he puts the team first the rest of his carrier.

I'm sure lining up a bunch of 5 star kids that may or may not pan-out is a scenario Golden & Co have wet dreams about.
_____________________________

LOL - truth to that!

Didn't Sileo also say on his show last week that the SEC is by far the best conference? He's a cane...right?

Nobody said the SEC isnt any good. But SEC fans, including pathetic coat tail riding gator fans overlook the fact that along with Alabama, LSU and a once every ten years USC and UF, there are woefully pathetic Ole Miss, MSU, Kentucky, Tennessee (I dont give a rats a55 about 110,000 orange fans- they still suc-k), and Vanderbilt and 6-6 UF. Georgia is good once every 5 years. So please. Stop. It makes you all look pathetic. I saw a Georgia Bull dog fan in California a few weeks ago, and someone said something about USC, or Cal or soemthing, and he went SEC babY! What is that? Why? Its so incestuous and gnarley not to mention 90% of the country is annoyd to death by those chants. Don't youpathetic dweebs realize that cheering for a conference means nothing? Cheer for a school, even if they s-ck but youose all credibility when your school s-ks and you cheer for the conference. Its clearly an attempt to rationalize your own pathetic existence!

ACC ACC ACC ACC ACC ACC ACC ACC ACC ACC ACC ACC ACC ACC

We gunna do this this year and next year and probably the year after!

GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@We're Even RICHER U Beeyotches !!!

Really 7-6 last year! Really?

Top Ten recruiting classes year after year=7-6!! Really?

Why are you So worried about the "U" when you cant even win your own conference? Really?

Took the Turds 25 years to finally beat us, really?

Bama, LSU, UGA, Auburn, Arkansas, TAM=Bigger fish to fry Good Luck Turds! Really!!!

Definition of loser talk? Anything a Gatr maggot says.

But specifically? How's this: "Maybe I'm wrong but didn't he also pass for 198 yds in 1.5 quarters of football against said national champions?"

Gatr trash still got pounded and finished year 6-6. No wins over teams with winning records except the Furball. Yep. If I were gatr trash, I sure would be proud. That public diploma mill is on a roll.

Yea! "Can't we all just get along" and "Radio" are 100% right!!!!!

Posted by: Can't we all just get along? | July 27, 2012 at 07:39 AM

And wasn't said quarterback wearing blue boxer briefs at the time? Or did I grab the wrong ones out of the laundry?

"Funny how we keep getting top recruits and Curse Piggy doesn't take the hint that his constant trolling is having ZERO impact on the local recruits."

Prime example of a delUsional and Moronic typical cane "fan".
You got a few top recruits, most other better schools got way more.
Whatever is written on this blog has zero impact outside this blog. What a doUche!

We chant "SEC" after a win you dUmmies. You do that because you
know you win in the best conference in the wold.
It would be very stUpid to chant "ACC", that is why no one does that. There is no pride in playing in such a lousy conference.
As far as recruiting and the recent records go. UF recruits paid off until the 2010 season. Most players left were either freshmen or sophs that season and Brantley got hurt in the 5th game. When Brantley was healthy that year he was better than Jokory-Morris.
This current team is full of promising players, the D last year was solid while the O sucked. Did not help that we had to play 2 true froshs at QB and that we played the top teams in the land. So when you say that all the top 5 recruiting classes have resulted in 6 - 6 record you are way off. The record was 7 - 6 and the young recruits held up well and still have time for greatness. Compare that with your team loaded with seniors and juniors, playing in the worst conference in the world and only managed to go 6 - 6. That is pathetic. Same as it has been for a decade for you. Pathetic.

ACC ACC ACC!!!

GO CANES UNTIL I DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hahahaha!! "PATHETIC"????

You sit here, day after day, changing your handle every other post so no one will know just how much time you spend here, furiously googling all things Miami and UM football and trying to "argue" with other internet nerds about an internet rivalry that has nothing to do with football.

And you're calling UM's record, a win short of UF's by virtue of no bowl game, "pathetic".

Well this has only been your life for a couple years as far as I know, not a decade yet. So I guess you got that going for you.

Unless of course you wanted to go follow your team until they played UM in 2013?

Just kidding. See you tomorrow. Loser.
