Polls: Canes still aren't Top 25 worthy yet

Both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches Top 25 rankings were released just a little while ago and as expected the Hurricanes remained in the "others receiving votes" category.

UM, coming off a wild 44-37 win over N.C.State Saturday, picked up more votes in both polls -- a total of four votes in the AP and 17 votes in the Coaches poll.

The Hurricanes (4-1, 3-0) take on ninth-ranked Notre Dame (4-0) next Saturday night in Chicago. If UM beats the Irish there is little doubt the Canes will crack the Top 25 in both polls.

Miami/we do not deserve to be ranked yet. It is not hate on the part of the voters it is the same reason so many people don't show up to the games. "Show me that you can win consistently and win against stiff competition". Once that is done, we will deserved to be ranked and we will be.

We were blown out by the only ranked team we played. That sticks in the minds of the voters. We need to beat a team in the top 15 to get there.....wait, we play Notre Dame who is #9 on Saturday. Well, looks like we have a chance to be ranked, if we play a COMPLETE game. Offensively, I believe the guys will show up. It is our defense and special teams (especially kicker) that I am worried about.

Reality is, 'Canes need to worry about one game at a time and not worry about rankings. I personally am glad we are not ranked. Winning a couple of games and then getting ranked can be a distraction, especially for a young team.

By the way, I know that K-State is now ranked in the top 10, but when they stomped us, they were only #22. Also, if that game were more competitive, say, 27-20, with the wins that we had the past 2 weeks we would have been ranked by now. To compensate for the way we lost that game, we have to really show folks that we deserve it.

Anyways, I want us to and I really think that we can win against ND. That stated, if we do not, I hope that guys don't come on here ripping the coaches and the players. I know it will be disappointing, but remember: 1)It is not a conference game. 2) Sports Illu. picked us to go 4-8 (we will definetly do better than that) and others (including numerous 'Canes fans who are realistic) picked us to go 6-6 or 7-5 at best before the season started. Even if we lose to ND, we really realistically can go 9-3 or 8-4 and win the Coastal division. NONE of us thought that that would be possible before the season started.

Again, I want and think that we can really win the game, but please don't bang on the team, players and coaches if we don't. We still can accomplish many goals, be ranked and play in the ACC championship game (sanctions permitting) even if we lose to ND.

lee corso does not hate miami...hes a maimi boy to begin with. besides the media has no opinion of us since we are not relevent like we were. we are giving up on average 33 points to the opposition...meaning anyone that plays us gets 4 touchdowns. How can anyone take us seriously when we have to win in overtime by 3 to a team that got killed 49-28 by middle tennesse (gt).....the DC will be goldens downfall...he dosent have it. we are not a young team...our roster is no different than fsu..85% of the roster that golden puts up before game day is sr/jr....thats all bs

Curse,

Get a focking life you loser. Who goes on other teams sites and pulls the shyt you do? I gave you directions on how to hang yourself. I even included a youtube clip on how to tie the noose. If you aren't up for that there's plenty of tall buildings to jump from? You could always eat a bullet? You might want to pick a location other than your mommy's house. She's already had to deal with you. It's not fair to put her through your suicide. Poor thing...

And to those who think Herbie on ESPN hates us, you must not live in South Florida and if you do, you must not listen to the Joe Rose show on 560 WQAM. Joe has Herbie on every week on Wed or Thursday. Herbie spoke so highly of UM on last weeks show speaking about how these young kids went up into GT and played their hearts out and how Golden is bringing back a winning culture to UM. He also was a staunch supported of RS. In '09, he predicted UM to play ND in the national championship game on an ESPN preseason show. He was the only one on the network to do so.

Is there media bias against UM? Of course (Mark May and Ivan Miesel on ESPN are 2 main ones). The fact is that not everyone hates UM like some of us think and Herbie definetly is not one of them. We need to stop thinking that there are boogie me around every corner who hates UM.

The reason why Ohio State, FSU and WV are ranked and UM is not is because they were all in the top 10 (WV and FSU) and OSU was ranked in the top 15 to start the season. The ranked teams they played they beat (WV may not have beaten any ranked teams this year, but the curb stomping they gave to Clemson in the OB, bringing back pretty much the same roster this year, deserves to be recognized. If UM was ranked in the top 10 to start the season and we got blown out by a #22 KSU on the road and then won the next 3 games, we would probably be ranked in the 13-19 range right now. Fact is we do not deserve to be ranked right now. Beat ND and we will be or finish 9-3 and we will be. Media calling for the Death Penalty after the Shapiro debacle is media driven. Us not being ranked is not.

Jim Gallo "Curse",

55 true sophomores or younger on a roster means you're a young team. 19 sophomores or younger on the defensive depth chart means the defense is really young. No one is buying your BS.

Anyone who would mention FSU is full of shyt and certainly not a Miami fan. FSU did not go through the overhaul with their roster like Miami just did. The rosters have nothing in common.

4-1 and leading the Coastal. Go be a little whiny biotch elswhere.

I think that some of you get this, but the Coach is trying to set expectations here. We have not seen a defense as bad as this one probably since the 70's when I wasn't watching anyway. We are playing games, waiting to be penalized so we can get on with our lives. How can there even be a discussion with a Top 25 ranking given we only play one phase of the game and two quarters each week. Let Obama tell you everything is okay and $16 Trillion of debt is fine if we keep spending it'll be fine. However, I'm the guy that says some bad Saturdays are right around the corner if we don't find a defense, starting with the high schoolers on the front four. I know there is some stud d-linemen in south Florid paying attention to what is going on and I hope they choose to stay home. I just hate hearing about everyone else's south Florida stars making a name for themselves out there.

We aren't going to ranked this year unless we usept someone and finish 8-4 0r 9-3. That's not going to happen until we find a defense. ND is going to kick our butt up there this week. So lets get a grip people no rankings yet.

We have to play without FEAR and we have to coach without FEAR... FEAR breeds doubt, hesitancy, indecision, playing on your heels. If we coach with FEAR our players will play with FEAR.

Alot of positives..no doubt about these Canes. NCS players and Head Coach were lamenting their 6 turnovers...sure but in the end...in OT.....the NCS defense could not and did not STOP Miami from making a spectacular and game-changing,game-ending play.PERIOD.Sorry guys....live with THAT failure. That said...it was interesting when Golden carefully explained in his post game remarks that he and his staff UNDERSTAND that his team IS NOT dominant regarding the Offense ,Defense and Special Teams. All 3 phases he and his Coaches know are developing and all three need improvement and need repetitions.THAT is currently the identity he said...of this learning team. They re getting it but it takes times to gain the important experience and wisdom to become very good. They re getting there gradually he said.It won t be overnight.Clive dropped a pass that would have put the Canes up 30-7 in the first quarter.THAT began the inconsistence for Miami on his routine DROPS.Guy stinks most of the time.

We are not ready to be ranked. Better yet ready to handle the hype. If Al don't take ova this defense this week, its going to get ugly (worse than KState). Fire the troll and D'Fino they are hurting TheU, everyone knows this.

Regardless if we young or not you shouldnt be giving up 500 yards of offense to everybody.
FightingIrsh go sale some used cars
Go Canes

I ve been saying for 2 years constantly that Miami needed big, tough strong DT s.They got a bunch but all too young and inexperienced which .....= BAD RIGHT NOW.Clive s late first quarter dropped short pass in the end zone in the 1st quarter would have put Miami up 30-7.THAT guy stinks......as usual. He drops more key passes.Thankfully he has and will be used much less in the future as he is so unreliable when called upon. The other receivers MOSTLY have made lots of key catches...not all...but the receivers Coach is coaching em up real nice this season...thankfully.

Herbstreit usually speaks favorably about the canes. He's one of the straight shooters on the network. So any criticism he may have regarding the canes is probably deserved. I don't think he has an agenda against UM (unlike Trev Alberts in the past).

We do not deserve to be ranked right now. We didn't even look like we belonged on the same field as K-state. We've struggled to beat middle of the road ACC teams (let's face it, ACC is a step below SEC, PAC-10, and Big 12 this year). So I don't think we have a signature win yet. I will agree that if we beat Notre Dame, then we deserve to be top 25. But given our defense's MAJOR deficiences (I can't remember the last time we had a front 7 this weak) I think that will be a tall order.

Who cares about the rankings! We just need to krep building. We'll take another bowl and look out. Hope we have kstate again. And we play that crap school from up north.

OKAY! HERE IS THE DEAL! THIS TEAM IS A YOUNG TALENTED BUNCH THAT WILL FIGHT TO THE END EVEN IF THEY FALL BEHIND, THEY KEEP FIGHTING, DESPITE A TERRIBLE DEFENSE,THEY HAVE WON THE 4THQT AND OVER TIME IN EVERY GAME EXCEPT KSU(WHO IS UNDEFEATED). THEY COULD EASILY BE 1-4 BUT DON'T TAKE AWAY THE FACT THAT BECAUSE THEY FIGHT TO THE VERY END THEY ARE NOT. ND YES IT WILL BE A DOG FIGHT BUT KEEP THIS IN MIND! ND IS INEXPERIENCED IN THE WRONG AREA(SECONDARY) AND IF CANES GET ANY KIND OF A RUNNING GAME GOING ND WILL NOT WIN! IF THE GAME IS A SHOOT OUT ND WILL NOT WIN! WHY? BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T HAD TO FACE THAT TYPE OF ADVERSITY! EVERYONE FEELS THAT BECAUSE THEIR DEFENSE IS RANKED AND THE CANES DEFENSE SUCKS! THE GAME IS A BLOWOUT FOR ND! WRONG! MIAMI HAS TO STOP THE RUN! FIRST! WILL THEY? PROBABLY NOT! BUT IF THOSE DRIVES DO NOT PRODUCE TD ND LOSE! THEY WILL PRESSURE MORRIS BUT HE WILL ALSO THROW WELL AND DEEP ON THEM! GET THE GAME TO THE 4TH QT AND BE WITHIN 7 PTS AND ND LOSES! FINAL SCORE MIAMI 38 ND 34! MORRIS 4 TD'S 1INT OVER 300 YDS! NEXT WEEK MIAMI IN TOP 25. 5-1

Against ND Miami has to establish the run. NC st shut down BOTH James and Duke. James has to take over the danged game like he did vs GTech. He can be inconsistent and revert to his 1-2 yd per carry old self. Once the run is established (which is the reason why Morris HAD to pass for 588 yds), we can control the clock, pound their D and open passing lanes to hit the home run. While NC state has more speed than ND, ND is a much more disciplined team. Morris has to watch out for their safeties and linebackers. Mante Teo is the real dang thing- Hell be harassing Morris all night. Another thingis Morris should not be shy about tucking it in and running. 3 yds is better than a sack or an incomplete pass.

ANd I disagree about a couple of things people posted- UM does deserve to be ranked at least 25. Listen Clemson started ranked despite having had 70 points put onthem by West VA. Last season Miami beats OSU, who also lost to UF, who ends up with a 6-7 season and guess what, they start the season ranked and UM, with a 6-6 season does not! Why because of media darling Urban the liar? I dont care what you all say- there is disdain for the U in the media. Maybe not so much Herbie, but his buddy Munchburger and Chris Fowler and Corso all hate the U. Corso always picks against The U-someone said hes a Miami boy. Who gives a sheet- he went to FSU! I do like when the world hastes the U- but give us due respect. So MIami lost big to top 10 and soon to be top 5 KSU. OK. BUt there were other teams that lost big as well, or lost to teams they shouldnt have- when Va Tech lost their first game they stayed ranked. And many ranked teams that lost to unranked teams are still ranked case in point Stanford and USC. PLease. Gimme a break on that. I do agree though that Miami owes some of the disrespect on them to how weak some of the top ACC teams are especially in OOC play. Shame on the chokies. Shame on UVA. Shame shame shame. I guarantee you all that they will come here with bells on and play Miami likes its the ACCchampionship. Yet they go and lose to Cincinatti? and last year to James MAdison?

Anybody who thinks we're back is delusional. You cannot have a defense give up 600 yards every week and think that you're good. It defies reason and logic. Sure, we're winning, but that's because we're playing teams that are as mediocre as we (or just a bit worse). Does anyone think the win over GaTech means anything after this past Saturday when they lost to Middle Tennessee? Let's get real. I wish we were truly back, but we're just not there yet.

We shouldn't be ranked because of the siren at the game! I was trying to count the slime while drinking my Tom Collins but I couldn't concentrate with the Dagnam siren blaring. Good news is that I could sit anywhere because there were about 20k there

Emil, nobody said we were back, just that we are much better than at this point last year.

Beat a BC team we lost to last time we faced them.
BCC was a struggle las year, a laugher this year.
Won an overtime game that we would have lost last year versus GT.
Beat a NCst team we lost to last time we faced them.

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

I don't think Miami deserves to be in the Top 25 yet. If they beat ND, they will be in the Top 20. However, as of now, they have beaten three mediocre ACC teams and Bethune. They got blown out by K.State. If they had lost a close game to K.State they would be ranked, believe me. Miami has a top 15 offense and an awful defense. Yes, Baylor and WVU's defense isn't very good but they have both proven they can win a lot of games without a good defense. Both teams are coming off very good seasons.

Miami is continuing to improve and they will be ranked if they keep winning. Also, I know individual ESPN commentators do not like the Canes much but overall ESPN wants Miami to succeed. A great Miami equals high ratings and that is all ESPN cares about. If the Canes beat ND on Saturday ESPN will run several hype segments on "Are the Canes back?" Go Canes!

For the love of GOD you people worry about the DUMBEST things. Stop worrying about the rankings, about how our D gives up tons of yards. Look at how much different this team is.

A year or 2 ago, if we got down, we stayed down, now we fight till the end, and if you continue to do that, more aften than not, you'll win. Yes ND is going to a tough one, but if they stop our run, guess what we have one of the BEST O's in the NATION, so that increases our chances. Our D will get better.

I meant to say 'one of the BEST passing O's in teh NATION'. My bad all

Let's slowwww down just a bit. The "U" is NOT worthy of a top 25 ranking just yet. Top 30 to 35 yes. But a top 25 team does not give up 35 to 40 points a game with 600 plus yards to boot. I am very proud of this young team and their 4-1 record. 3-0 in the ACC is just awesome! If someone before the season would have said the "U" would be in the position they are now I would have taken it in a second. But the "U" in not top 25 just yet. Before that happens the "U" has to play some defense. Having absolutely no pass rush will be a killer not only next week versus ND but through out the season.

So, it was a great win against NC State. The Canes do not give up. Morris' pass was sensational and totally on the mark at 65 yards. A great win.

That said, here are some thoughts:

The play calling was really poor on several key downs. The apparent QB rollout or draw inside the 10 was a stupid call. The 2nd down running play with less than a minute left was idiotic. And the flat passes always seem to draw two defenders.

When we defend that play, we usually have one guy on the receiver, and he gets blocked. Where are some simple flat passes to the running backs? Weird play calling on too many occasions. Wake up, coaches!

And when are we going to find a TE who can catch the ball? I see that Dye is now the starter. Walford dropped another pass when he was wide open, and Cleveland should have caught one in the end zone.

I hope that Dye has hands and will look the ball in to assure possession. This is his chance to stake out that position at TE. The TE should be a critical part of the underneath game.

Our defensive line has no push, and our offensive line was dominated. NC State won the trenches. We had no real running game. Why not run Duke wide, not alone, but with pulling linemen for some protection?
You know, student body left or right. Give the kid a chance to get some momentum and make moves!

We have a major problem on defense, and the secondary is easily beaten. Yes, we blitzed corners and safeties at times, but few LB blitzes. If we are holding LBs in pass coverage, why are we so easily beaten underneath? Confusion?

For a senior, Telemaque makes some real mistakes in coverage. Yes, he is a hitter, but a liability in the secondary. He may be a good outside LB prospect with a little more weight.

We don't seem to have a good underneath passing game. Our guys are rarely open, in contrast to our opponents. Why? What's the problem with the scheme?

And Morris needs to work on the underneath game. Combine that with his great arm and our downfield speed, and we can dominate, given decent pass protection. Our O line did OK in that department.

And Wieclaw has missed 4 straight. He looks like a head case right now. Someone needs to work on his confidence big-time. Too much success for him?

ND is a real tough football team, with a good running game, strong D-line and linebackers and intermediate range passing game. They will go outside on the run a lot, and our DEs and LBs have not shown much defense on these types of plays.

ND will have the fan support and will be ready to go. Wouldn't surprise me if the City of Chicago dyed the river green for this one!

The Canes must show something defensively. Somebody needs to assert themselves on the line. If not, we should blitz more often to give our secondary a chance at coverage. I'd like to see up the middle blitzes, and welcome Perryman back into the lineup for this purpose.

The O Line must protect and play with passion and force. Our guys need to be psyched and have that smash mouth instinct for this game. We looked like wusses against ND in the Sun Bowl last year! Time to re-establish fierceness and pride on our team!

But of course, there's always Morris making an unbelievable play or drive to pull it out. Our offense can score with our speed in the pasing game. Running could be tough against Teo et al.

If we get a good ball control underneath passing game going, it will free up the long ball. We have the speed to beat their DBs. Yah Phillip!

So, a few thoughts from a diehard fan!. But, GO CANES, knock the crap out of Notre Dame. Show up with passion and execute, and play your best game of the year!

We are not ranked because of our strength of schedule so far..
Boston College - hasnt played anyone but Clemson and lost
Kansas State - Undefeated and literally ran us out of Manhattan
Bethune - FCS SChool (says it all)
GaTech - Lost to VaTech who both have 2 loses and then loses to Midd Tennessee
NC State - Hasnt played anybody and had a close win vs UConn...a Basketball School
....We wont get credit for anything until we beat someone who matters, and this is the perfect situation

Not in Top 25 because their defense hasn t shown it can ever be the difference - maker in any of the games ...so far this season. It makes sense to me.How can a team with no defense be ranked after 5 games that high.....unless it demonstrated that they could alter or change the course of a game?Miami s defense is not yet capable of that.

Disagree that Kirk Herbstreit is the worst Canes hater. I think it's Mark May and Lou Holtz. Mark May tried to make Randy Shannon's firing racial. How can it be racial when the U hired a black head coach before firing a black head coach? I love Randy Shannon as a player but he was not head coach material

Catholics are going to get run out of the building! Our offense is just too much. Denzel is back in the middle of the D! It's going to be fun to exact our revenge on N.D.

well if we win against gods team then maybe they will crack it. but when you have a defense giving up this much yardage its hard to look at the win column

ND has its first good start since Brady Quinn and now their national contenders? Give a me a break...Go Canes

Oh please.. I love my Miami but let's be honest with that defense, we do not deserve to be rank yet. And who cares about being ranked! Need i remind you guys rank or not we're not playing for national. A true Miami fans knows its either the BCS or win over 10 games. Which is why we still have no fans in our stadium! This is Florida no one is going to miss going to the beach to see this hotmess defense in the field. Anyways Miami you are my heart but we both know you're not ready yet.

@5>3>2 Couldn't of said it better...The U on ESPN shatters the ratings for College Game Day....and 30-30...ESPN of course has a bias to SEC, and Big Ten...And we all know they are just waiting for ND to return to it's glory years, now that Penn State has faltered...

If I was Al Golden I would bring every previous coach a(that's not working except Larry Coker and Shannon), player (Sapp, Reed, Lewis, Wilfork, Phillips, Vilma, Rolle, Shockey, Olsen, Hester, Graham, etc..etc...) you know I can go on and on and give these kids a pep talk on what it means to be CANE... Line all those people up in front of them at the sametime...and as Irvin says this is handed to you for yoU to carry on as we did before... I think the get it, but then I don't...

I for 1 is glad that we're not. Once we get past ND, then come with the rankings. Just win and the rankings will take care of its self.

Ive been a hurricane fan since i was born and the problem with miami isn't the players on D its the lack of attitude and swagger that the national champs team played with, their passion isnt there! Another problem is Miami cant even pack their home stadium our own fans hardly show up and support their own team at home a 72000 stadium with 12,000 fans is unacceptable and it sure as hell isn't giving them the home field advantage like other teams having a 6th man as the crowd!
