Video, plus Al Golden's post-game comments after the FSU loss

UM coach Al Golden's post-game's comments after the Florida State loss.

On the decision to start Stephen Morris...
"I thought it looked better on Friday than clearly it did on Thursday. Until you see him go out there and run around and actually stress it like he did in pregame, we were uncertain. I don’t regret playing Stephen in this game. I thought he gives us the best chance to win the game, and we didn’t get it done."

On keeping the game close until the fourth quarter...
"I thought we played hard. I thought we coached hard, I thought we played hard, and we lost to a good team. That’s it. We lost to a team that is ahead of us right now. We have to develop our guys and recruit some more and keep working, and don’t make any excuses. They’re a better team right now. We had opportunities that we did not convert. They did - hats off to them. Clearly they have an excellent pass rush and got to our quarterback, and we’re not doing the same on the other end. We’re not getting to the quarterback in four, and obviously we let [EJ] Manuel out too many times.

"They wore us down a little bit because we weren’t converting on third down on offense. I think we were 25 percent for the day, had to keep giving the ball back and we just couldn’t hold up. Then it turned into a field position game. Just too many opportunities - too many catches down field we didn’t make, too many interceptions we didn’t finish, and obviously an onside kick that we couldn’t get a better look than we got, and to not convert it is a shame."

On the timeout situation at the end of the first half...
"There was a lot of confusion obviously. I knew they had one timeout left, so that was their answer for the 10-second run-off, and then they said it was the half so I lost half my team. Obviously I wasn’t worried about that, but if we’re in the situation where it’s the final kick of the half, we’d like to get Seantrel [Henderson] and Malcolm [Bunche] and our big people in there. Just so much confusion.

On the performance of the offense...
"We just have to keep getting better. We’re playing a lot of good teams. We certainly have to be more efficient - that’s fair. We have to do a better job on third down, I don’t think there’s any question about that. We have to make some plays on the ball. We had some chances downfield, where we have to make those catches. We just have to take a deep breath. It’s been a long 12 weeks against a really tough schedule playing a lot of young guys. We need to take a deep breath, get healed up and see where we’re at over the next couple days. See if we want to practice at all or if we won’t, we’ll see, and then get ready for Virginia Tech."

On Duke Johnson’s injury...
"I have no idea to be honest with you. I couldn’t even tell you what it is. I was told he was out. I think they x-rayed him, that’s all I know.

On the importance of the bye week...
"It’s critical. We’re hanging on by a thread. We need time off. Brutal schedule, eight weeks in a row, young team. We need time off."

On the defensive momentum during the game...
"I think we got worn out a little bit. You have to keep pace with them and you have to convert on third down. We weren’t making the plays. Clearly they’re rotating three backs in there and they wore us down a little bit in the fourth quarter. We probably needed another takeaway, we had opportunities. They’re throwing the ball into Cover 2 for 30- or 40- yard gain and it should be an interception. We have to come through and make a play there.

"As I said to the team, give Florida State a lot of credit. They’re a very good team right now. They’re deep, and that’s okay. We know what we need to do. They’re ahead of us right now. We need to buckle down and get better. We need to develop our current team and we need to add to it."

On the team’s fast start...
"I think it was a better feel - I think that’s fair. The last two times we’ve played at this level, we didn’t look the same – Kansas State and Notre Dame. It’s fair to say it was a different look, a different feel, a different focus. I can say honestly that’s what I told the staff last night and that’s what I told the team. It did feel different. Just disappointing we didn’t convert on a couple more opportunities to give ourselves a chance. I’m disappointed in that. We have to get back to work there. I’ve been saying it all year we have a long way to go as a team. Are we competing? Yes. Do we execute all the time? No. We had some costly penalties and we had some costly errors in the game and that’s on me. I have to get that fixed."

That German dude was pretty good. Seantrel did have the back injury, but I agree. The guys also missed a ton of time. No excuse though, he should be throwing up the weights.

We could've coached that team to an undefeated season.

Championship.

Don't forget, you need a shalalala. Maybe Jim Gallo. He might be a a few inches taller, but he will do.

Donna hates the football team.

CHIN UP ! I'm well into my 60's and went to FSU. Miami is the most respected school and rival we play. They have never tried to dodge us in any sport (unlike UF has done to both of us ). When we lost to Miami it was with respect. It is, and most likely will always be the primer rivalry in the State. There's a greater heart feeling when these two teams play. It's more brother against brother than the rest of the State will admit !

Great News for Golden and Co. tehy won't get outcoached and loose this upcomming weekend!!! They are OFF hjjajajajajajaj

Alan, I agree with U and I respect U guys for continuing to play us unlike the Gators. When the both of us are doing well it bodes well for CFB. Both teams played hard Saturday night and I will be looking forward to the rematch.

8-10, that is against D-1 competition.

I keep pointing out the record and no has the response. The bottom line is we have no record to compete against real teams or on a national level. 8-10 go ahead and sell it as a national strategy. The BCS will laugh at you.

no one has the response at this point. I'd like to hear from you as fans. 8-10 is a record. It is Al Goldens record. Please tell me how this guy had earned a third year?

It takes at least 3 years to evaluate a coaches ability to recruit and devekop talent. You cant really evaluate Golden until the end of his third year.

I think its crazy too entertaun the idea of firing Golden. He is just what this program needs, an enthusiastic young coach with an ability to recruit, develop, discipline, and lead. This program is lucky to have Golden.

If you were to fire Golden, who would you hire to come here an
d coach? Youve got an empty stadium, interim ad, poor facilities in comparison to your main competition, and fans with unrealistic expectations. Your president is a troll who hates the program and the ncaa is about to drop the hammer.

The difference on the field is just simply as result of many differences in the recruiting battles. Now we have Alabama coming to Miami and across Florida and cherry picking the very best players, along with Ohio State, LSU, Florida State, Florida, West Virginia, and then Miami, and yes, Miami get the speed, which I believe will always be a mainstay, not need much talent to run fast, but Miami is not getting the difference makers who can cahnge the flow of a game. Yes, we got Howard, Bush, Duke Johnson, but the 1st two need to hit the gym hard this off-season! Miami is getting more developmental players who come thier Junior and Senior season, may be good, but to compete against the teams we are playing against, we need more players who can step on the field immediately, but again, they are going to Alabama, Florida, LSU, and Florida State!

Losing MAlcolm LEwis hurt, he was developing into a playmaker! Angelo Luis has re-committed to the Canes, he was a true player maker in high school, add him to the fold in next year's team. Lets face it, if it was not for the Pending NCAA sanctions, Golden would have a top 5 recruiting class right now for 2013! And Beyond! All things go cycle, and right now, Miami is struggling, but without struggle, you have no gain, no proseperity, look at Alabama for many years before Saban, and they were medicore! Same thing for Oklahoma state! and many others. its painful, but each year, bring new players, who have new devotions and talent levels, the U will not remain down.

But no more tough scheduling! I think Golden mention this once before! I think next year's schedule will not be as tough as year's past! Look people, I know the SEC teams can offer hugh paychecks to thier opponents, but look at thier schedules, most of thier schools are playing at least 2-3 FBS schools, some 3-4 this year. Miami has just played 1. Dont forget, Miami will lose less tier opponents just becuase they cant offer a hugh payday for them, which forces them to schedule tougher opponents! And people be careful what you wish for, We dont want to lose Golden right now!

Do like MOST (not all)SEC teams- play 3 cheese puff games- in Miami's case, FAMU, Bethune or a MAC team or someone like that, and say FAU. Thats 3 automatic wins. Early. Then enter the ACC schedule. And maybe add UF or an Oklahoma or Ohio State. With spread option football (Oregon, Oregon State, TCU, Texas, Texas techOhio State, kansas State, even Notre Dame, FSU) it is really tough to go undefeated anymore. These spread or read or triple options put a lot of stress on defenses and you may need to outscore them- eg (Texas Tech TCU 56-53 last weekend). My point is, scheduloing needs to be better esp in the face of upcoming NCAA sanctions. How do you think Rutgers is undefeated and ranked?

From the standpoint of our general feeling about Golden- you all are brutal. Sound like many of you are New Yorkers transplanted to Miami. Seriously. This is Golden's second year. In Shannon's last year in late November before the USF debacle he had 4-5 recruits committed. Golden had to bust his behind to salvage that recruiting season and he did! Give him at least 2-3 more years. If UM finishes 8-4, 8-5, I'd give him an extension. And a raise.

Want UM to beat Alabama in 2 years? send shalalalala to Bama.

Shalala should be done when the sanctions hit. Seriously, how does she escape having the school's name dragged through the mud.

Jim gallo, slow down, proof what you write. you have some good thoughts but way to many typo's.

Shalala is too powerful to be fired, she has actually prevented the board from meeting in the past 9 months because of how badly things are going in the new hospital.

Her downfall, if it happens, will be the board allowing her to retire with a golden parachute pension, and as much as it might pain UM fans to hear it, it'll be because the economic collapse torpedoed her revamping of the medical program.

The football team doesn't enter into these equations, she's not a football coach and what she does in her actual job is much more important to the university than the football program.

You guys are going to be very disappointed when she retires (in 2016 or when MomentUM2 passes $1.6 billion) and nothing about the football program changes.

Golden is no where near worth 2 million. we gave him a raise without merit...thats crazy. His perfomance at temple was mediocre at best. Look at the teams they played...you dont go to a mid-level team like temple to recriut a coach for a brand/history like ours...you go to NFL or someone in the top 10 ranking. he came here 27-34 with really short experience...why in the world would we hire him? Jon Gruden yes...but Golden? naaaaaa. He will not be successful here....he hasent earned the right to coach a team like miami with our history....his staff is equally weak....his decision making is not good for picking talent at the coahing level....even art kehoe...look how morris is getting banged up....OL fault completely. 6-6 or 5-7 this year. Its over for 2012

Trying to be optimistic but is there anything about this team under Golden that is any different than what it was under Coker or Shannon? I hear the same excuses. We are too young, we lack depth, next year will be better etc etc. Since 2006-2007 we have been blown out by good teams on national television and have barely beat average teams. Are you telling me that freaken DUKE has more talent than the "U"? Is Duke, who is in first place in the ACC Coastal and just beat North Carolina, going to win an ACC Championship before the "U"?

Maybe my optimism is getting in the way of the facts. The "U" is not going to be any good for a long time and the looming sanctions will not make things any better.

Gallo you act as though EVERYONE is lined up and licking their chops to coach at Miami. Well they aren't, and we should be THANKFUL to have someone who is. In this age of INSTANT gratification, it's not going to happen overnight.

Very few teams if any, are going through what we are, as far as youngsters on the field. No matter what ANYONE says, YES experience plays a huge factor. If Bama had 3 seniors and the rest fresh/soph they'd be struggling too. Imagine going from high school to playing in front of 75k fans on national tv, it's going to be very stressful until you get used to it.

These kids will develop and get better.

yes and you know why that is....because we have let out coaching staff model a thesis that come to miami as a steping stone to further your career. That model dosent not work today. And now we are stuck...in hindsight, we should have never let coker go....he would have never left if it wasnt for shalala...he could have developed into our version of "bobby bowden" There would have been stability at the coaching level. He was here the longest of all the coached at miami.....joe paterno coahed the greats and so did coker....thats powerful in the living room of recruits...bobby bowden had a 5-6 recored at fsu...coker was 60-15 with 6 bowl apperences and 1 natl champ...and we fire the guy...wtf for because he had 1 7-6 season? Do you think today a guy like that would be let go? no way...fyi he is 5-1 now at uta...be careful what you wish for...now you will pay and we are seeing it right now.

Paul Dee fired Larry Coker, not Donna Shalala.

The vision of Larry Coker as "our Bobby Bowden" is hilarious though - note that the only people who would hire him were the "San Antonio Roadrunners".

Yep and the Roadrunners are 5-2. So what's your point?

thats because you cant grasp the concept of stability via what bowden brought to fsu...STABILITY....coker and shalala we always at each other....she fired him. yes paul dee was the one that did it...she gave the order...it wasnt paul dees idea....btw...latest espn blog.....murry state (117 defensive ranked) has taken Miami off its 2013 shed.....they are afraid that a 170 ranking (us) will affect their ticket sales next year....

cola:

miami 4-4
Miami 170 defense

uta 5-1
murry state 117 defense

golden:
cane walks and ties + 2 million...his wife sure must be buying some really nice ties

If Miami played South Alabama, Texas A&M Commerce, Georgia State, Northwestern Oklahoma State, New Mexico State, Rice, and San Jose State we'd be 8-0, they'd award us a bonus win for having beaten all those division II teams by 100 points a game.

Stability only works when you have a good coach to keep around, Coker took a championships team put together by Butch Davis and drove it to .500. Paul Dee fired him after the Board of Directors met after that Boston College game and decided to make the change.

You're just talking out your ass on Shalala, she doesn't know anything about football.

"We can and will do better for our student-athletes and our community. "
Donna Shalala, University of Miami president, in a statement to alumni

shalalas exact quote....she fired him. your the one talking out of his a s s...plus the season had all kinds of BS

1. willie copper and bradon meriweather in a gun battle with area thugs
2. ryan more arrested for grabbing a woman by her throat
3. the fiu brawl
4. bryan pata killed
5. kyle wright out for season

and golden thinks he has problems...so the guy has all this and has 1 bad season and we fire him for golden...thats f u c king joke

"There were a lot of issues, but certainly the direction the program was going was certainly one," Dee said. "I wouldn't say that was totally it, but if you want to look in that direction, that was one. There were disappointments. There were opportunities, I think, to play better and we didn't. It all comes to the head coach."

You're just flat out wrong, the BOT met and voted to fire him, Paul Dee informed coach Coker himself, Shalala released a statement about it.

If Coker was a halfway decent coach he would have been offered a job by a real program.

Instead he sat with only a single interview (Rice) in three years and eventually took a job with the D2 San Antonio Roadrunners.

This is a coach that went to back to back national championship games mind you.

Jimmy OLLAG being up at 1:40 p.m writing crap let's me know that you are obsessed with seeing your name on posts so I refuse to read anything that you write..I skip or chose to read certain posters and you are not one of them.. You have a vendetta and I don't do vendetta's I am a realist..
My reality is that the Canes played hard, had some lucky breaks, but in all these games we have no depth so there are no players to cycle in..being 2 and 3 deep while the other teams are 4 and 5 deep just does't make things happen, or win games no matter how talented.
To blame the Coaches because we don't have depth is pathetic... so heal and recuperate team..and I do not believe that little jim should be up past 9:00 since brain shrinkage and brain fade occurs starting at 6:00 p.m. Disregard all posts therfore from Little Jim Ollag since there is nothing in there.Space cadet..
Go 'Canes Always

coach golden has asked for the fans to be patient but he and his staff is not showing patience with player development. look at de position he comes in takes 2 4 star recruits(dye & perry) at a position that we were thin both freshmen and moves them to te. now there is talk of moving odonell to te. these 3 guys have the biggest frame to work with to be big de and we wonder why we get pushed around.plus how gud can these guys hands be if they were all de.in the past we take with with brick hands and turn them into ot eg. winston, fox

how many players have inproved thier play since this staff have taken over? cant count streeter because we didnt know how good he was prior. jacory improved a bit,jo jo nicalos, brandon magee a bit.the rest havent improved or regressed telemaque, ray ray should be both all acc 4year starters, seantrel henderson, jermaine johnson was a starter in2010,cleveland and walford, clements, cain, gaines, chikillo, hurns, the plug, rogers, finnie, linder, dye, perry, thompkins and so on and so on

Telemaque can't even start on this team, how do you figure he's All-ACC? Ray Ray is too busy using Facebook to do the work it takes to play.

Who is getting better...
- Finnie
- McGee
- Highsmith
- Perryman
- Mike James
- Chickhillo
- Stephen Morris

This team is much tougher than last year.

my point was 2 years ago going into their jr season we all talked about these 2 safeies being possibly the best pair in the acc, they played poorly last year under this new staff and its gotten even worse this year. are you the only one that think chikillo is playing better? perryman came in a stud so that has nothing to do with coaching.

Some morons on here write about players, past coaches, excuses like too young, yada, yada, yada.

Look at the replays of the Cane games this year. 4 down linemen on defense and LBs up close, man to man pass coverage, blitzes - Miami holds.

As soon as dumb jerk DC changes to 3 down linemen, LBs five yards off the LOS, zone pass coverage, no blitz, other team converts with a run or a pass. Like Duhhhh.

The stupidity of golden and his coaching staff and fans are beyond belief. The stupidity of shalalala and AD hiring golden are beyond belief. The stupidity of shalalala not taking a few millions and buying the old OB and renovating it when Miami had bogu tens of millions from BCS games is beyond belief.

Thank god there are other universities who have intelligent presidents and ADs and coaches who are enjoyable to watch on Saturdays. Not sure how long, if ever, Miami will ever return to prominence. Miami will become the duke of the ACC invited to homecoming games and Cane fans getting the razz and hey, hey, hey, good byeee, hey hey hey, goodbye.

Good bye CaneFan '72...
Go 'Canes Always

70douche, U aint even a Cane anyway, just some know it all stupidass that sees that Miami has a great Coach now and is scared that we are going to take over CFB soon again and the most overated conference in the world who never plays anybody outside their conference and if they do it is a glorified home game will once again bow to the only true masters the CANES. So go blow yourself, moron.

Hey Guys great news even though I like Ozzie Guilen in that the Marlins have fired him. It won't be long now before we will have our old stadium back because the Marlins will be left for another destination and the ORange bowl will be our field again.

Shalalala hired the AD's that put us here. Never have we seen the AD turnover that we have now. Not in 30 years have we had the coaching turnover we have seen in the past decade.

She does not care about making UM what we used to be... Golden is doing his best but in order to succeed Shalalala must go.

This man knows what he speaks! The troll shalala is a double agent. many double agents roaming around UM to be sure they don't see what they saw in the 80's and 90's and that was dominant football and guys making a living!

that's not the OB anymore. maybe on the same lot, but no way it's the old relic with the atmosphere. we are stuck with no-life, just make the most of it.
How's it going champs. I like the thought of our own stadium. Small and personal would be perfect. I have not seen the baseball stadium, but I think we are doomed to stay in no-life.
I am glad Golden is here, I am hoping he will stick with UM throught he tough times ahead. I like how they played sat. night. Far from perfect, but they played hard. VT will be a good game. Stopping that QB from running takes a big part of their offense away. He is not consistent passing. Should be a good game later go canes

golden will fix Miami but shalalalala MUST go. All the problems you are talking about here started when shalalalala came to Miami in 2001.

Hey MikeS, man I know it's not going to be the Old Orange Bowl, but just the thought of our guys playing on that same field where so many of our Canes played would be an awesome sight. I agree I would like to see our team get its own stadium which our team rightiously deserves and I feel like as long as they can stick us where they want us it may be the same. Sunlife wouldn't be so bad except for two things the location in proximity to the school and the fact that the seats are so far away from the field. I don't know what they could do with it as it is to improve that but it would be a welcomed sight. One of the greatest things to see was at the closed end of the ORange bowl, was the screaming fans and the trouble it gave so many of the other teams.
I too am glad that Golden seems to so committed to this team. He was one of the guys I really wanted and thought would be great for our team. He built Temple from nothing and will have much more atheletes at his disposal in getting this turned around. I really like the progress that he is making and am realistic enough to know its going to take time.
I feel like if we stop and spy the QB draws and runs with Va Tech we could blow them out. OUr defense has played much better the last few weeks and I expect our guys to look much more refreshed after this bye week which was richly needed. See ya later fellow Cane

This is a good look. I think we can go into it further. Coach by coach, the o-line since kehoe has gotten here has improved, all the "Fsu has more depth talk" didn't really show up with the o-line. All the wide receivers have improved since coach mcdonald got here, he's in the line with curtis johnson or maybe even better. coach barrow consistently has linebackers that make plays, and all of our linebackers improved when he got here. And swasey does what swasey do. After that, the tight-ends led by percy pringle are trash, first off, they were asked to put on to much weight, asante 270lbs, dryon dye 275lbs, clive walford is right where he needs to be, but what tight-end is going to get open at 270lbs, who's idea was that.

That's why it's stupid to criticize the tight-ends. Than they're criticizing the d-linemen when the d-linemen are not even being asked to pass rush until their 3rp option. It's stand the o-linemen up 1st, check run, maintain gap intergrity, proceed to pass rush, by that time, the plays over.

The secondary, brandon mcgee is playing more physical, but the over-all secondary scheme is so soft, even a caveman can do it.

So who cares if guys are benching 225 over 30 times, if the technoque remains what it is, won't be to many sacks coming our way. That's why you'd be hard pressed to name a big 10 school that ever led the nation in sacks. Most of them don't teach their d-linemen to get up field.

I'm just glad this staff just got here, otherwise wouldn't of been no bennie blades, ed reed or SEAN TAYLOR. No JEROME BROWN, cortez, russell or sapp, this staff doesn't know how to coac hthat type of talent. They have along ways to go to get adjusted to the type of athlete's their coaching.

That's the main reason muschamp is suceeding up with the gaytors, he's use to being around atheltes, played with em at GEORGIA, coached em at valdosta state & texas, so him coming to Florida, gotta give me credit, i wasn't impressed with him going their, but he was smart enuff to make sure, if he's the headcoach, the defense definitely was going to be on point if nothing else.

RIght now, coach goldie is struggling with what his strong point with a football teams is, he does have special teams playing solid, at least we're back to being a regular special teams. When fluzzi panuzzi was here, you had to hold your breath. But one things for sure, i always wanted fluzzi to coach the tight-ends, cause he knew how to do that, but quarantine him away from special teams.

It's good to know i'm not the only one who see this. oach OH-NO as i call em is to stupid to realize, the name of the game on defense is to stay aggressive. He's sitting back trying to see what the offense is doing instead of dictating to the offense and forcing them to make adjustments. It was sickening but funny to watch Fsu finally take advantage of shayon green dropping back into coverage all night. So we really got bad knees shayon trying to cover one of the most explosive players in college football and goldie is crying about them completing a 30 or 40 yard pass, lol, how long did he and his boy oach OH-NO think that was going to last.

Patience.

Open letter to Miami football players:

Hang in there bros. Your performance vs FSU showed fight. Its difficult to win with your QB injured.

This indeed is a process, and it will take time, but this season you are showing fight, b...als, and a cane swag we havent seen in years. Experience, maturity, reps, wins and losses will get us there. Hang tough and know that you have the ability to beat va tech. Trust in each other, brothers in arms. Time to destroy some turkeys from panokey. Time to bust out as true canes. Even in a loss i know you all impressed many people. All prior great cane teams and dynasties began slowly and gathered strength.

Go canes. We believ in you. Believe in yourselves.

What's funny is, anybody who knew anything about Miami would know, the worst move ever made was building that baseball stadium, that was a waste of money if i ever seen it. This is not a real baseball town like that. Yeah it's alot of people here who like baseball, but it's FOOTBALL 1st, Hurricanes, highschool, optimist than teh dolphins and heat. If they thought people from Miamk were crazy, mess round and let luke, alonzo highsmith get that tropical park iniative off the ground, it's all over.

my point earlier was not to get on the players but the coaching and the moves they have made, the play calling.they are just setting up the players for failure.2 years ago cain was one of our most promising young lbs, they move him to de in a gap control scheme. can someone tell me how a 240lb de is going to hold position and control a 300lb tackle that we face week in week out in the acc.small ends are speed rushers eg.von miller.so they moved 6'5 275 dye and 6'7 270 perry from de and replaced them with 24olb cain
