« UM Hurricanes defensive end Kelvin Cain's mother: "He's heartbroken. He said he did not quit the team.'' | Main | NEWS: New UM Canes depth chart for VaTech; RB E. Clements out for rest of season »

Hate for Randy's guys? Hardly. Shannon's players still play big roles for Golden's Canes

It was supposed to be a relatively quiet bye week for the Hurricanes.

It's hardly been that.

First, Luther Robinson's father took to the radio waves earlier this week (he said it was him) and called UM coach Al Golden a liar for saying he doesn't have enough talent on the defensive line. Then, Robinson Sr. wondered aloud if the Hurricanes' second-year coach had "something against [former coach] Randy Shannon's players," -- the excuse as to why his son and other Shannon recruits supposedly are not playing more.

A couple days later, the drama continued.

Defensive end Kelvin Cain -- one of Shannon's recruits -- was discovered to be off the Hurricanes roster (Surprise! Somehow Golden forgot to mention it during his 10 minute ACC teleconference). A UM spokesman later informed a few observant roster watchers that Cain's name had indeed been deleted on purpose because he "left the team."

A day later, Cain's mom told our Susan Miller Degnan she was puzzled and couldn't understand why UM had said Cain left the team. Now, Cain's mom is hoping her son finds a way back on the roster and avoids becoming the 15th player to sign with UM under Randy Shannon and depart under Al Golden before their time was supposed to be up.

So does all this mean Al Golden really does have something against Randy Shannon's players? Is this all part of Al's master plan? Is he sitting in his office crossing Shannon's guys off his list with a red magic marker and laughing like Dr. Evil?

Hardly. Smells like sour grapes to me. Sounds like more excuses. Reads like it too.

Here are some numbers regarding this Hurricanes roster you might find interesting:

> By my count there are currently 79 players on scholarship at UM. Forty-five were recruited by Al Golden and 34 committed to the program under Randy Shannon.

> Of those 79 scholarship players, 26 were listed on offense on the depth chart before the Florida State game and 28 were listed on defense. Count the two kickers -- Dalton Botts and Jake Wieclaw -- and you have a total of 56 scholarship players who aren't just special teams guys (like Dallas Crawford) who see playing time regularly on game day.

> The remaining healthy 19 scholarship players are on scout team/special teams along with other walk-ons. UM has four scholarship players out for the season with injury: OT Ben Jones, LB Ramon Buchanan, WR Malcolm Lewis and QB David Thompson.

So how many Golden guys are starters? 10 including seven on defense.

How many Golden guys are backups? 18 including a dozen on defense.

How many starters are Shannon guys? 18 including a dozen on offense.

How many Shannon guys are backups? Ten.

So that's 28 Shannon guys and 28 Golden guys that make up the depth chart. I'm no mathematician, but that sounds pretty even to me.

Forget math for a moment and concentrate simply on "equal opportunity." I'm a firm believer that any coach puts winning first. If Luther Robinson or Kelvin Cain were even remotely better than the players currently playing for UM why would any coach in their right mind not put them in the game?

Here's the only reasoning that makes sense: Robinson and Cain are not better than the guys competing with them in practice everyday. And if they aren't cutting it in practice, Golden is doing the right thing by playing younger players in the game.

Those players are not only going to ride out the oncoming NCAA storm with Golden, but they still have time to grow and improve. Last I checked, Robinson and Cain have each had at least three seasons to prove they deserve a starting job here. They didn't do it with the previous staff. And they obviously haven't done it now against a bunch of freshmen and sophomore.

Golden is a hater? Give me a break.

heres a theme from oklahoma years ago....."bye, bye Golden...we hate so see you goooooooo" Even brent Musburger is echoing it on live TV, lol...the whole orange bowl is chanting, lol

Duke Johnson ain't Shannon's recruit. Hurns, Mike james and a few of the O linemen are his on offense. Morris was hand picked by SHannon's o coordinator, so I guess you could say he is one as well but really he was Whipples.

Do everyone a favor and STFU
It takes 1 sentance and we all know its lil Calvie about to type out a term paper that rambles on about nothing
Create your own site and talk to yourself there
You arent welcomed here buttercup

Players are calling radio stations and newspapers.....reporters saying this has never happened to them since covering the hurricanes.....THE MUTINY HAS BEGUN.....this is an insult to the brand...do the right thing and resign Golden....no way you can take back control of the team....rumor has it you might get fired...if that happend your future will be done.

Jim Gallo is just another idiot looking for attention
Do everyone a favor and join Calvie on his new site you moron
Take your rumors and shove them up your arse

dream on Gallo, it ain't a gonna happen jerkoff. Let em call who cares.

This isn't high school where parents come to watch little Jimmy play and get upset when he doesn't. Those parents don't have to come out of pocket (the way mine did) for a great education. I have no sympathy for them and their playing time.

Players know when they are in a system that rewards those who work hard. Offensively, that system is not perfect, but it has the potential to be real good. This is why you don't see guys crying or leaving from the offensive side of the ball.

On the defensive side, nobody wants to play over there to much. That's why all those guys rolled out early and went pro. If goldie and his d-co had more clout, that's one thing, but with the exception of kehoe, barrow, coach mcdonald, swasey & jedd, the rest of them are trying to become established coaches and make their mark as coaches.

Right now, to much credence has been given to coach goldie for what happened at temple. This is Miami now, time to show and prove. I'm not from missouri but goldie is going to have to show me, and right now, him signing off on these defensive game plans let's me know he doesn't know defense either.

If we were winning and guys were complaining about playing time that's one thing, but losing and guys not getting playing time, lol, no matter what team you're on, best believe, shats going to hectic!

When we go 4-8, then it will matter, lol....coupled that with last year at 6-6....perfect time to fire golden.....10-14 with player relationship issues..perfect. Then we can get our NFL coach since shalala will be forced to pay up.....

If dave wannstedt gets fired as the d-co up in buffalo, he needs to either be the headcoach at UM or no less than the d-co/assistnat headcoach!

Calvin and Jim Gallo must be dating
They have to be on the phone telling each other when to hit the send button
Neither one of them have a clue about Miami Hurricane football

soon captian queeg (Golden) and his marbles will be gone....fyi....sprints all night for missing stawberries, lol....all the parents should write the board of trustees...complain.....favoritism that cheated their sons from pursuing an alternative offer at intial recruiting time....promise to play reneged....then call radio stations and write letters to editorial boards at hearld and sun/times....that should do it

you all will thank me when golden and his dc are gone...

Those two are the same schizophrenic idiot that talks to himself all day hating the fact that Golden is building our program back to the top and little jimmy is the same old scared little bi y o t ch he has always been. A C u n t with a few fictious screen names.

Championships is all that matters
Thats the post of the year

Thanks Anti-Calvin.

oh really....offense is now broken down with a total of 37 points scored in the last 3 games....we will probably lose the rest of our remaining games and now with all this bad blood in the locker room....very high probability....forces are linning up against golden....he will not survive this especially with sanctions and ending season 4-8...no way.

of course championships will have to find someone else to be on his knees with, lol....poor greenpea....alot of opinion and no one to bl.....w, lol

Dalton Botts is one of 69 candidates for 2012 Ray Guy Award that goes to nation's top punter.

And Sebastian is a finalist foe the Capital One Mascot...

We invented SWAGGA!!

PS Tropical Park, future site of Hurricane Alley

You know all about being on your knees don't U little Jimmy? better wipe your mouth.

CanetilIdie, U know it my brother.

Maybe yall mis-read my post

Nobody is reading your posts, they dont have time for 2000 word essays.

4-8, you guys are all on something! We win at least three of the last four, probably all four. Miami will finish 8-5 this year. The regular season will finish either 8-4 and lose a decent bowl game or 7-5 and win a bowl game against a weaker opponent. That is improvement. I just can't wait to see another QB. Morris throws a great long ball... of course, that's WHETHER THE RECEIVER IS OPEN OR NOT!

nope I say we go 5-7 or 6-6.....the 4-8 is worst case

Excellent analysis Manny - any chance you and Susan can stop reporting the confused second hand ramblings of players' parents as if that were adding insight or useful information to stories?

shalala needs to find her own replacement, since that troll took over, the football program has been going down the drain cause that trick set the precedence "We're recruiting a different kind of athlete to the University of Miami" what type of shat is that!

rs was a racist? im in middle school and know more than most of you lame a** people. last i heard 85% of the rosters in cfb are black so i guess that makes every coach a racist. try recruiting all white kids and see where this program will be

Posted by: futurecane | October 26, 2012 at 10:30 AM

Well, Stanford, Notre dame, Boise St, Utah, Wisconsin, etc have done a great job of late with MANY more white players than other schools. especially on the Offensive and defensive lines and LB.
Not to get into a pi**ing contest, but I can bet an all white NFL team would split 10 games with an all Black NFL team.

The point being, that, as MLK wisely said so many years ago, (paraphrasing) "the measure of a man (or woman) should be determined by the CONTENT OF THEIR CHARACTER, not by the color of their skin."

Shannon was no more a racist than the man in the moon. However, it was pretty obvious he had a soft spot in his heart for economically disadvantaged kids, regardless of their educational standing, or sometimes lack of character.
Unfortunately, THIS prejudice proved to be one of the reasons for his undoing.

I read someone say something about whipple. Worst oc I have ever seen he couldn't have watched film. He was garbage at best.

What about Cannon Smith, the son of the Fed-Ex founder?

CanetilIdie, U know it my brother.

+1 one, my brothers.
CaneRock, there are always exceptions, and i in no way meant to imply that ALL his recruits were as I described, by a very large % of kids he recruited fit those parameters, as demographics being what they are, there are LOTS of S Florida kids disadvantaged.
Unfortunately, he, like Al was hampered by a lack of 1st class assistants. This, and his inexperience as an HC hurt him.

I might be in the minority, but if we fire D'Nofrio, and Randy wanted his old job back, Al should consider it. Silly thought, though. But a healing one.

I meant as DC, regarding Randy.

BTW, people like Jim Gallo are a cancer on this Blog.
It's one thing to disagree, but when no factual reasons are included, just hate and a want to incite, he needs to go bother Notre Dame.

You guys know there's no chance that's Canetillidie, right?

Hyping the punter and the Capital One mascot thing and Swagga and the tired old Tropical Park line?

I hate to see this kind of stuff with players leaving or sounding surprised that they are off the team. It is unfortunate and has to hurt team chemistry.

A lot of bash on Golden here. Don't knpw about that and find it hard to believe he isn't a fair coach.

I am sure if these guys could help us win, they'd be on the field.

Looking for a strong game next Thursday.

I believe VT has Duke tomorrow, so it will put a burden on them to play so soon.

The Canes are due for a big game. I look for Duke and Stephen to play well, and the defense to show better.

VT is beatable. We are due for a strong performance.

Let's get out and support the Canes!

FSU is playing Duke tommorrow
VT will have the same amount of rest as the Canes will

First, you have golden's and his DCs stupidity in not knowing how to put a great defensive formation on the field with four down lineman, LBs up close, no end runs, man to man pass coverage, and blitzes. Instead he puts on a prevent the win defense three down linemen and zone pass coverage, no blitz.

Second, you have golden blaming the players' youth, inexperience, immaturity when in fact, it is golden's and shalala's immaturity and incompetence in not understanding football,

And now, Third, you have breaking news that some really good players have been ignored instead of encouraged and coached to become great like past Canes.

You just can not fix stupid. Nothing will change until shalala and golden are replaced. Put Jimmy and Butch and Schnell on the committee to find a real AD and a real pro style Miami football coach. IMHO.

Children, CHILDREN.....isn't it time for your bath,to eat supper and get ready for bed?

Finally somebody makes some sense about the player situation and who is playing and who isn't and for what reasons.

Bravo,I could not agree more.If you can not beat out the freshmen, you don't deserve to be on the field.Just man up.Great job Manny!

Thanks for that input. Duke should pick up a second loss. But they are interesting this year.

So, UM and VT will be well rested for Thursday. Hope our O shows and the D is stronger in the front 7.

I do agree with Cane72 as far as defensive scheme.

We need to stop Thomas from running up the gut, as he did to burn us last year. VT does not have the exceptional power backs of the past. and their D is not yet up to their tradition.

But our O must play s strong game and eliminate the dumb play calling by the OC and the overall inefficiency.

Hope we are up to it.

championships is all that matters

You have a lot to say today but last night you were quiet
I guess because I had your mouth full.

This article was pure race baiting, if you don't realize it your a moron. Whoever wrote it should be ashamed of themselves.

bottom line was he left off the list or not was his mother lying or not, where is the list, that's what i'd like to know.

Who the HELL cares? Whether it is Randy or Als players they suck. The U suck, the program suck, Al Golden Suck, the uniforms are old, it really does not matter. THE U SUCK, and Manny Navarro is a fat ass that eats at buffets all over S. Florida. Suck it Navarro.

Shalalala made the decesions that are killing our program. She bulldozed the OB. She hired the AD of the week(s). She won't let us recruit Miami guys. Golden will turn us around but won't be done until she is gone.

Two people dominating this blog with negativity. Future recruits read some of this garbage. Hopefully they see it as just that....garbage.

Every father feels the way Luther's father does, it is normal..thankfully most do not call radio stations and rant....It has been reported that Kelvin Cain did not show up on friday before FSU game...if that is not true, I am sure the truth will come out..hey Jim Gallo...the coach doesn't owe anybody anything.

I think Coach Golden is good for the UM. He had a chance to leave when the news came out about the charges facing the football program. Coach Golden decided to stay. Saying that, something has to be done about his D.C. I have never seen a whole defensive team have to look to the sidelines for instructions. All I see is confusion and people out of position. The D.C. must think he is creating a new method of playing defence.
Many teams use the NO HUDDLE offence including the UM and the reason for this is to keep defences off balance.
