Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Al -- and the VT Hokies

Just walked out my front door to the most invigorating splash of cool air I've felt in a long time.

Of course, I've had my TV on for the past hour watching The Weather Channel for news on Hurricane Sandy and how it's affecting the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic areas.

Much of my family lives in New York, New Jersey and the surrounding states.

Coach Al Golden, who also grew up in New Jersey, told us his brother, Shaun Golden, "is the sheriff of Monmouth County'' in New Jersey.

"That's a shore community,'' Golden said. "So they're [going] a million miles an hour and my parents are back there and so is my older brother. They're expecting quite a bit. Clearly it's going to be a big one, so we're praying for those people and hopefully they'll come out of it OK.''

Meanwhile, in Blacksburg, Va., home of the Hokies, it's 37 degrees (feels like 31) and raining, with high winds.

The forecast for tomorrow  is snow and wind with a high of 37 and a low of 33.

We'll keep track of whether the Hokies alter their travel schedule for their Thursday-night game at Sun Life Stadium. Usually they would arrive Wednesday.

Either way, here's hoping that people keep safe during this "perfect'' storm that's about to hit.

Today, the Miami Hurricanes will have their weekly press conference that usually occurs on Tuesdays. Today would be considered a normal Wednesday for UM, because the game is being played two days earlier than usual.

Have a good day everyone.

GET'EM CANES!!!!

PAYBACK IS A BEATCH!!!!

Ahh, smell that fresh air? That is the room without the stink of Gator Troll.

Of course, he will still pretend to be a Hokie fan this week, he is obsessed like that, but we at least won't hear another undefeated season prediction from that loser until next August.

The Tide has turned and the Canes will continually get better, from here on out! Go Canes!

Gator troll is suicidal. Sitting in his mom's garage breathing car fumes, playing the sound of the gator fight song, with a picture of timmy tebow, and spanking his monkey...

"I love u sooo much timmy!!! Please come back to meeeee!!!"

Let's put an all out for GATORSAM...

Where are you Gator?....

We miss you...

Interesting intense game but post will you?..

Go 'Canes Always

I'm hoping for some really hot weather here on Thursday mid 80s would be a nice treat for our friends from Blacksburg.

Who cares about the gators. It's all about the U.

Right here. Hurting badly. Hate losing to Georgia. Future is still very bright. Computers still love the Gators (#4) also still #7 in the BCS. Awesome season so far.

Go Canes! Play a complete game and beat Virginia Tech! Redemption time...

Don't let this staff see those tight-end stats, hide em, they seem to have made it a habit of sending defensive ends to the offensive side of the ball!
/////////////////////////////

Last year at Tampa Jefferson, McCord had 59 tackles, 11 1/2 sacks, three forced fumbles and an interception. As a tight end, he caught 14 passes for 276 yards and a TD. He helped lead Jefferson to an undefeated record and 3A state title in his junior season, when he had 18 1/2 sacks.

1. FIRE DNO
2. Pay a visit to Philbin and Co. and learn a bit about coaching.
3. Fire DNO
4. Tell Fisch to get his act together regarding his playcalling.

Maybe this will help Miami bc VTech doesnt get alot preparation for us, losing 2to3 days of practice hurts a team.

We win if these coordinators get their act together. Fisch is starting to act like D'Fino. I hope the defense play as good as they played againist FSU. Stop logan and we ahould be alright. Run the fn ball coach then, playaction.

Please these coaches are not in the same league as fisher or kelly.....they will never be able to elivate UM.....they dont have it and their records show it from their past....there is so much internal poisen now in the Um system that it will be impossibe to fix unless there are significant changes at the coaches level.....6-6 or 5-7 year end cane record will do it. The players now have hidden animosity towards the staff....they hate the DC...no new recruit or parent will want their kid exposed to this especially with sanctions....it really is very over for miami...I dont see how this gets better unless nfl type coach is hired that brings in a solid staff.....just aint gonna happen....the stats this year are the worst in 25 yrs at UM....

The staff should only be evaluated at the end of year 3.

Do you think all of the players have animosity towards the staff or only the ones that aren't getting playing time?

look at the stats:

this year - defensive yard total 3,576 or 447 avg
offensive yard total 2,694 or 336 avg

now look at last year with a 6-6 season year end totals

offensive total yards 4,533 or 447 avg
defensive total yards 4,319 or 357 avg

what you see is the offense is performing weaker than last year with a more experienced players...weak OC plays...look at last 3 games with 27 points total

then you see the defense blowing up the offense by widening the spread differential in total yards....the offense cant keep up with the defensive allowed yards....the coaches cant fix this...and our sched is really weak when you think about it....solution is make a total coaching staff change since those statistics will not get better going forward and there is nothing in Goldens record that proves he can drastically change the outcome of the statistics....make a brian kelly change like in the nd charlie weis...your not going to see 11-1 or 10-2 from Golden going forward....there is nothing in his coaching history to prove that...he was 27-34 at temple and he really didnt turn that program around to miami caliber...sorry those are the facts

Rchy12, agreed. But I remember last year the VT QB killed our LB's and safeties. sasly, I expect the same thing, and I hope DunnoToday/Tomorrow or Forever is ready.

the OC is starting to get indecisive and hesitant. Bt he hasn't quite caught up to DC standards yet.

I'm going to remain cautiously optimistic........did anybody catch the comments from NFL scouts regarding the game planning/play calling by D'Nofrio?

I think the players dont support the whole staff.....look Al Golden has a 6 game loss average during his coachig career....what r we doing with a guy like that? Do you think a guy that averages losing 6 games a year is BCS material?...please put the crack pipe down....it is never going to happen...he is at his high water mark.....

And, Howard Schnellenberger, Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson hadn't won anything as head coaches before they came here, either. I wish I could include Butch Davis with that list. Boy, do I wish I could include him! If he had stayed...

Anyway, at least give Golden the same amount of time Randy got...

Thats my point....those coaches came here and averaged like 2 games or so....why give him time? what would be the point? if you knew as a certainty that he will always be around 4/6 loss per year average why wait....as I see it the program is regressing....the sactions are REAL...going to happen 120%....now is the time to make changes....look Golden is not getting rid of Dnofrio...they are a pair deal....

@coolcat
Yep he kilt us on read plays and went straight up the middle. And nah we havent caought up wit D'Fino but he is closing ground.

I also been on 247 website and i surly do hope we can grab these defensive tackles. Tim Williams goin to be a monster next season. Checkout his highlights amd i hope Alec Collins stick wit us that will be huge.

I heard sources that we will kno our outcome at end of season and Um will be given rime to respond to sant. Its not goin to be bad as all these haters would like it to be

As for the stadium , not goin to happen anytime soon. So fire the fukn trll now. We dont need her. She said Um aint no football school, whhere has she been last 30 years. If we get a good AD shell be gone.

Donna Shalaa the troll, is also goin to raise acads after the new science building get put up. She has to go guys. Lets start a petition for her and the defensive coordinator.

once miami is formally charged....it can either go to summary disposition or they can appeal...miami has 90 days to appeal before penalties are enforced....it moves very quick...so basically miami has till the summer to win...since the rumor is the ncaa has all it findings and will formally charge miami sometime in april....I believe ncaa wraped up its findings ate the allen deposition....so sabctions will be enforced before 2013 season....and miami is not going to win any appeal...

@jim

Are u kidding me. Dude do u really think the NCAA is goin to listen to a thief slash liar. He has already proven he cant be trusted. He want example huh

He said he gave millions of bucks to players from ? to current. Alright AG talked to all players and found out it was just lunch money not $200_300 meals. Only Ray Ray and got suspended not once but 3x's and then dismiss. Thats control. um paid make all that money too.

Final verdit Um gets no more than what USC got. We already gave up a bowl and again this year if we get bowl eligible.

Forget about the made up problems with Shalala then.

Explain to me how Randy Shannon and Larry Coker were good coaches who were held back by the AD or Shalala.

Why didn't either one of them get another head coach offer?

//////////////////////////////

shannon was held back due to several reasons, the biggest 2 being, by him being a 1st time head coach and having to be the 1st coac hsince schnelly to have to hire/put into place a whole UM staff, were some of the biggest factors. Than when you look at the fact that the school came out, and since shannon was one of the lowest paid headcoaches in college football, alot of the decent coordinators out their look at that stuff and realize, "i'm not going their, that school doesn't fully support or believe in the guy they just hired".

So what this does is make it a difficult to find quality assistants, and if they're low balling the headcoach, those quality assistants and their agents know they will try and low ball them.

Than the precedence was set when troll shalala said "we're recruiting a different kind of athlete to the University of Miami" so what that meant was, we're going to do everything in our power to get away from the image of those teams in years past.

You know, the same years that coach goldie has been allowed to grasp onto because this administration is desparate now and getting heat from the boosters to ge this program back to where it needs to be, so she shut up about that, along with the situation with the nc2a, she's been quiet now. We all know shannon would not have been allowed to bring art kehoe back or soldinger. shannon was forced to roll with a bunch of assistants with no championship experience and had no idea what a UM championship football team should look like.

Who on here really thought we were going somewhere with stoutland as the o-line coach making excuses, nix hired by shannon(1st time headcoach bad move) the nipple was hired by the administration, made assistant headcoach, so he was forced on shannon than the rift begin. People blame shannon for more than they should, he's the one who actually upgraded the talent base back around here.

The idiot before him is the one who set this program back for all these years. He did a whole lot of damage. When you fire corner stone assistants who carry with them, the knowledge of that programs standards, kehoe, soldinger, vernon heargraves and other left because they saw the hand writing on the wall, that's not something you can just replace overnight.

shannon is the one who made us respectable again, he instantly upgraded the qb position, when he got here, he was left with kyle & 1 for 14 kirby freeman. His record of upgrading the talent here is clear.

Now coach goldie, i like him being here and i can see he's doing alot of good things and is definitely trying to do all he can to draw from the knowledge he has access to and goldie is still tyring to find his way too, but when i here him saying how he was suprised at "how out of shape the team was", that maybe true, but no matter what, the "out of shape team" played way better defense than this supposedly better in shape team"

Which just goes to show that if shannon had a better offensive staff, particularly a better oc, he would've been much further ahead now. Facilities or no facilities.

Of course if you get fired from UM, it's going to be hard to find work anywhere unless you're thorough like that. shannon had many offers, but being handcuffed by the UM administration, even after him being fired he was handcuffed, cause he couldn't work until after his contract situation was cleared up here first.

ok so usc got 30 scholarships taken and 2 bowl...I say the same also. shapiro is not lying about all of it...ncaa has phone records, pictures and receipts...

WE GOT SOME CANES OVER HERE!!

Calvin...that's a lot of space you had to use to make excuses for Randy Shannon. Have you considered that maybe (just maybe) he's not capable of being a head coach.

For Jim gallo to talk down on us so bad is kind of amazing bein that he most really love Miami because this guy obviously watches more film on us than the opposing coaching staff, an by the way he is a statistician lol no wait he probably just uses Google to do everything in his life your a joke... Since 1980 there has been no other school that has produce more national titles or nfl draft picks that are still currently starting on nfl rosters then yes you guessed it MIAMI..... # Beat the turkeys

Do you really think anyone is going to want to coach at a program that fires someone after 2 years of attempted rebuilding? Especially when he's doing as well as Golden is doing recruiting, player development, and media relations?

Golden was handed a flamming pile of crap and soon sanctions to go along with it and he still has everyone fighting. This guy is a great coach.

The players hate the staff....snap out of it. results are all that matters....Golden in 10-10 at miami...proud if what? Player development? Calling radios stations and players leaving the team? fyi....team has given up. the season is over in their eyes and not worth fighing for. Mutiny in the locker room and bad blood. your dreaming dude

When wa sthe last time UM beat Vtech here at home? I cant even recall when that was. 2002? I know MIami beat them inBlacksburg in 2005 against Marcus Vick. Then, they came here in 2006 and they beat us- again with a running QB (which they always have). Then, they beat us there in 2007, here aagain in 2008, there in 2009, when Jimmy Graham dropped a sure TD in the pouring rain, they beat us here in 2010 against Tyrod Taylor when we basically had the game won, and they beat us there last year. Come on man, we have to beat this team. Why is it that UM has such a hard time against VT?

The post had nothing to do with whether shannon was capapble of being a headcoach or not(obviously some people believed he could), the post was about whether shannon was being handcuffed, and that's obvious.

Calvin, you can't put quotes around something you just make up. Shalala never said anything about Miami's recruits, she doesn't have anything to do with the football program.

So Shannon was a good coach but was held back by being a first time coach and by having to hire his entire staff and by his salary. Well none of those things are the multitude of flimsy reasons people try to say that Shalala is destroying the program.

Butch Davis was a first time coach. So was Schnellenberger. Jimbo Fisher and Muschamp are first time head coaches. I don't believe that being a first time head coach means you can't be successful.

UM's coaches have always been paid less than big state schools pay their coaches and they won 5 national championships. Can you explain how they weren't hampered by coordinators not wanting to coach for them?

We beat them in 2008 man, that's the year allen bailey and forston fell on tyrod taylor for that sack. patrick nix ran a good offense against them. aldarius johnson made a nice move on a screen pass and got down field on em. It was a good defensive battle. I think we beat them something like 14 to 10 or something like that.

Coach Golden just needs to stay the course. The last thing this program needs is another coaching change. Unfortunately they had some players leave early for the NFL who could have really helped themselves and this program by coming back an additional year. I believe going forward this team will improve, especially with more talent infused via successful recruiting.

Hey is the game still on for Thurs nite? I hear there's a real hurracane coming tomorrow morning and there will be lots of flooding and damage and possibly no power. That is a good excuse to stay home and not go to the stadium.

Hokie's comin' down to get a tan, and whip some butt. VT has ruled miami since joining the CC, and even before in the bigeasy. Canes will never get to an ACC champ game. Miami is second rate program, who wins in no sports. Yes, many, many, many years ago, miami WAS the elite, who raised the standard for college football, but that was then this is now. VT 31 miami 21 It would be worse, but we are down this year. Otherwise, another K_State, ND, beatdown. it still might be

Will someone here at the Herald just ban Calvin aka jim gallo already
Nothing like the ramblings of a clueless moron like Calvie and his other alias
Go back to the trailer park and wait for mommy to call you when dinner is ready

Not even Sandy can save your sorry butts. Know this, the Hokies suck this year. Yes, they are bad indeed. But know what cane clowns, you are worse. The sorry Hokies will come down and beat your sorry arses in front of 10k clowns, and national TV, where all the empty seats will be highlited. And some fool will blame it on Sandy, what a bunch of doUches!
Hokie beat down a coming down for ya all clowns!

Hokie, you guys are the blueprint bridesmaid program. Good not great, perpetual also rans. We can whip you with a pack freshman qnd all of you're freshman watching can get a preview of the whipping they are gonna take the rest of their college careers.

The Hokies suck but no way do they suck as much as both of your daddies do
Go back to your toothless hillbilly club and watch your daddies in action

For those of you who care at all about the University of Miami (Bueller? Bueller?), we've just passed $1,000,000,000 in the MomentUM 2 campaign!

Truly amazing!

http://www6.miami.edu/momentum2/

you just cant face the inevitable...the locker room is in total chaos....the coaches have lost control. thats because your young a stupid.....when you grow up youll understand that when the captian loses the ship...it over. Golden and staff have lost this team.....just look around at all the events the last month....everything is going downhill fast...the stats are getting worse.....there is no respect for the DC..players have social media contact ability....all talking behind the staffs back and complaining....this coach better do something and soon or all is lost for avery long time......

butch davis wasn't handcuffed when he came in because the school was desparate for someone to take the job. goldie is almost in that same position. Nobody is sayng that a 1st time headcoach can't be successful. But using butch davis as an example is not comparable because he had the luxury that all the championship coaches had at UM, and that was to coach with lifetime UM assistants and guys who knew the standard. butch didn't have to necessarily put together a whole new staff.

gumbo fisher had it the easiest of the mall "coach in waiting" so he didn't have to rush into hiring folks and also had all the majority of the Fsu boosters backing him up. muschamp was given full support as well, just go and look at the salaries being paid to gumbo & muschamp assistants.

As far as the statement troll shalala made, apparently you haven't been doing your homework, it's in one of the UM promo video's!

Calvin, so answer my question. You said Randy Shannon's problems were #1 being a first time head coach (not Shalala's fault and a debunked premise) and #2 that Miami didn't pay him or hire expensive coordinators.

Miami has never payed coaches or coordinators as much as big state schools and they played in 11 national championship games.

Why did that sink "good coach" Randy Shannon and none of the coaches that came before him?

I flat out don't believe you that Shalala said UM needs to recruit a different kind of football player than they've recruited in the past. She has nothing to do with the football program, she's never been involved in recruiting.

Calvin post is the best read in a long time. The rest of you guys are nothing but a bunch of racist. The hate on Shannon is unfair. Because the love for Golden is un earned at this point. One is white and one is black. Please help me understand. Coker left this program in a mess. What has Golden done so far?

Golden had his teams in every game last season, was only blown out by the #2 and #3 teams in the nation this year, and has UM controlling it's own destiny for the ACC championship and a berth in the BCS game held in it's home stadium.

WHAT DID RANDY SHANNON DO IN FOUR YEARS????????

I like Randy Shannon as a person but he was a terrible coach.

The race card is an incredibly lazy and ignorant argument for Randy Shannon being a good coach and Al Golden being a bad one.

If nothing else Al Golden talks to the media (and the fans) WITHOUT HOSTILITY. Randy Shannon talked to them like he was above answering their questions, like they (and the fanbase) were the enemy.

That's why he had zero job offers after being fired, he's just not head coach material.
