Canes CB Thomas Finnie released from jail; hearing set for Jan. 10

Suspended Hurricanes cornerback Thomas Finnie was released from jail Wednesday and is scheduled to go to court for an arraignment hearing at 9 a.m. on Jan 10, Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts records show.

The 21-year old sophomore, charged with a pair of felonies (burglary and third degree grand theft) after admitting to police he stole a laptop computer from a former teammate on campus last week, was released under a pretrial service program court records show. His bond was originally set at $17,500, but he didn't have to pay it per the pretrial service program.

The arrest was Finnie's second as an adult. He was arrested this past July with misdemeanor marijuana possession. He completed a pre-trial diversion program on Nov. 30.

Finnie's high school coach Telly Lockette said Tuesday night he was disappointed to hear his former cornerback had run into trouble.

"He has a mother and a father he didn't need to do what he did," Lockette said. "I don't know if he was pressed. But I know he has a mom and a dad that love him. He's young, but you have to know right from wrong. Sometimes kids think they are invincible and it catches up with you. I try to tell them all the time one mistake can cost you everything. I hope that isn't the case for him."

What a shame for this young man and his family. I wish these kids could see what they have. A scholarship to college worth around $200,000 and a shot at the pros. Possibly throw that away for a laptop? Unfortunately, there is a pattern here with this young man.Not sure where he stands with the team but I hope he has one strike left.

how can you expect an athlete that is this stupid to memorize a defensive playbook, read offensive schemes, understand and do what he is asked to do, plus pass his classes? That's impossible. Now I know one of the reasons this defense stunk so bad (yeah you too Ray RAy Armstrong)-some of these kids just can't get it through their thick heads-no IQ, No football IQ.period.

i think his time as a hurricane is over. now he just needs to hope the courts dont max him out, he is an adult. maybe he can get on the right track in life, after this,Cam Newton stole a labtop at florida, he survived but he had to go to auburn to get past it. so there is hope for him.

After watching him in coverage, I suspect that after he took off running he was caught from behind by an overweight middle-aged cop.

Damn man just go to class and the gym. That's it!! C'mon man you're a returning DB, we need that leadership.

Apparently he would rather make $1,000 illegally than bide his time, be patient, get his $200,000 education form on of the top 50 universities in the country, work hard to better himself over 4 years. best case scenario he gets a degree and plays in the NFL. worse case scenario he has tons of contacts for future networking. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, like today's youth its all about now now now, thug life, make the ben franklins now, don't wait, don't do it right. I want it now now now.

Newsflash Finnie: Life don't work that way. You are at risk for ending up in a 10 by 10 cell amongst robbers, murderers and rapists. Do you not feel you are better than that?

The Coach was dead on... Kids think they are untouchable.

What a freaken dumb as.. Stealing is one thing but stealing from an EX-TEAMMATE is just plain stupid. Golden MUST kick this piece if shi. off the team.

What needs to happen is they need to get this story off the front page so all these hypocrites can't stop trying to pass judgement. UM needed him more than he needed UM. If finnie was up their with spurrier and company and did this, all you'd hear was he was suspended and everything else would've been kept in house. Why, because that's what the good coaches do, keep the precints on alert for their players and keeps everything behind the scenes. Who cares if he's 21, he's still in college around his peers.

That's like that dumb law where if a kid is in the 12th grade and a girl is in the 12th grade, if he's 18 and she's 17, he can get charged with rape of a minor, but they all grew up together all the way from elementary on up. Common sense is slowly being lost i society. Many people on here have probably stolen something a time or 2 in their life, no matter how small, you just didn't get caught.

finnie will be alright, the question is, how will coach goldie handle this, by trying to throw that man to the wolves or supporting em and coming up with a way for finnie to be able to make retributions.

Yeah lets keep him in good stead, slap him on the hand and tell him not to do bads things any more. He's still a baby at 21, unlike a lot of his peers serving our country and giving their lives so he can "play" and act like a criminal who is immune to any kind of punishment. Shame on him. Make him pay by revoking his scholarship and let him see how criminals live with a little jail time. I love the University and am tired of going outside the lines. Its not hard to follow the rules with everything being paid for. I had to pay my own way and did not have things handed to me and I did not got to jail as a thief. I do not want a thief on the team.

PS Calvin read the arrest report+++++++++++ +n+o+t+ +the +f+r++ont+ +p+age+ an+d s+top trying to +make+ excuses f+or the +thie+f.

Finnie will not be fine, when he gets out of jail he'll be kicked out of school.

This isn't sleeping with a girl who's 17, this isn't getting drunk or high or getting in a fight or vandalizing property, or any of the normal idiot things young people do.

This is the theft of a laptop. Grand Larceny.

If he's innocent, then yes, Finnie will be fine. But if not, he's going to go to prison for a short time, he'll be kicked out of school, and his shot at the NFL is over. And rightfully so.

A $20,000 Bond for the theft of a laptop, roadblocks, and two felonies? Florida Prosecutors and all those involved in theses charges have seriously outdone themselves with this incident. My question is are we trying to help Finnie by holding him accountable or simply going to ruin his life forever? Is the objective here justice and behavioral change or total destruction? I believe Finnie has an opportunity to be successful and he can learn from this experience to never touch other people's property again.

every year,,,aka every off season,,,them players lose thier minds and thier freedom and possibly a scholarship over a damn laptop...that you can buy from walmart as low as 278.00 bucks..WTF...

If they hold him accountable he'll be kicked out of school and sent to prison for a short time.

Stealing a laptop isn't just some childish behavior, it's criminal activity stemming from deep character flaws.

There's no place for Finnie at UM anymore. Best of luck in the real world. No one ruined Finnie's life, he did that himself.

let me guess..more tmz for golden....let the kid go thru the legal process and then evaluate him after....golden has bigger worries like when will he fire his ex-roomate...too bad the wives get along and are social....thats gonna end. if your gonna go meet jimmy in the keys..pay attention to what hes telling you...the only thing that matters is winning and winning big...so far you are losing...dnofrio is not worthy of being a cane...it dosent just apply to players....you cant have ed reed, ray lewis and jimmy talk to your players about UM tradition when you violate that same tradition by keeping people that are not winners...you have to set an example.

cane practice videos look great...but there is a very real disconnect at game time...it is showing up in the stats big time....also the team is not in condition...defense was holding their hands on their hips many times during the season at half time....

todd bowles, bob diaco, chuck heater and matt ruhle are the front runers....dnofrio will not leap frog over those guys...dnofrio stays at UM....so what is golden going to do for 2013?

5>3>2 you sound just as ignorant as the students you are referring to.

Maybe the universities could provide the student athletes with a laptop and stipends? Maybe they wouldn't have to go out and risk everything over something so small. The system makes a lot of money of the student athletes the least they could do is make life easier for their money cows.

rofl, you heard them talking about how pissed off goldie was/is about this, who cares about how pissed off goldie is, it's teaching time now, this is part of what any college coach signed up for, nobody's feeling sorry for coach goldie, he's getting paid a kings ransom, of course he doesn't understand why this happened. And to the idiots who keep trying to make this bigger than what it was, at the end of the day, it was just a laptop. I could careless about reading what a kids arrest record was as a teenager, means nothing to me.

All those who claim to be UM fans, you can't be a True fan because you only want to root for the success of the teams but not the actual players on the team. Had many of you known the arrest records of alot of the players that came thru here in the 80's and 90's, from the way yall are acting towards finnie, you'd probably have passed out by now reading the ones from back than. Again, who in here has never stole anything in their life before.

finnie is not going to be rejected by his peers, that's the main thing, he'll still be accepted, and he'll still be able to play ball somewhere at some point. That's life, good choices, bad choices and no choices at all. People on here typing like it was their laptop or something. It's oach OH-NO's fault that finnie snatched up that laptop anyway, that's part of his scheme, he thought the ex player was sending his defensive playbook to other teams and that's why he got crushed this year. Turns out, it was just tecmo bowl that was uploaded on that laptop. Now they trying to make finnie the fall guy!

If you as a football player can't figure out or understand that you are playing on the College Scene for a Top Brand Football team then make room for someone who would love the chance.

If you play by the rules, practice, watch tape, lift, study, and give something back to the community and it is too much for you - Finnie - then it is better that you move on.

Now he has made more negative news for our team that we do not need at this time...and the other players may have to pay the price.
Selfish acts hurt the family of players..."I" and "me" have no place on our team....

Calvin no one, or no act, is bigger than the 'U'. We need good hard working HONEST guys that follow the rules. Work the football process, and live for football. Not scheming to lift laptops, and run from the police.
Calvin we do not sweep our SH** under the rug.
Neither do we encourage players who have criminal records to wink because it was NOT a major theft.
A thief is a thief, and Coach G will throw his sorry butt off the team as he should....

Do you want to have all the football players lock their lockers with their laptops, iphones, and all their gear because someone among them steals?.. What kind of locker room would that be?..

Our Coaches have enough to do, and create a team we are proud of, rather than playing police also.

There is no retribution for stealing.....Nada.

Thanks for your help Finnie, and see you down the road.

If being honest is hypocritical then I and 99 % of these posters plead guilty, so do not Calvin try to throw up the "it wasn't that bad, work for retribution card"..Prison time will not just go away...
I feel for the embarrasment of our team and all the players and Coaches..who have worked so hard to run a clean program.
Go 'Canes Always

You guys are insane if you think you're going to have 85 people and none of them are going to steal. To many people in society try to play this high & mighty game as if they're perfect. Who's advocating that players steal, common sense, you can go pick out any random 10 people and you'll probably have liars, theives, maybe a murderer or 2, alduterers, fornicators, etc. etc. So to act like all the players on the team are going to be responsible all the time, you must not be prepared for real life than.

Why would people be embarassed for UM, he stole, him and his family are embarrassed. You're only embarrassed if you lived in a bubble all your life. Again, it's just a laptop, in fact, no matter what it was, he stole something, ok, if goldie and crew can't come up with a plan to help him make retributions than that shows we're not equipped to address real life situations as a institution and that's part of the problem right their. The best thing to do is to help this young man move past this and help him actually be able to become productive in society.

Why call an institution higher learning if it can't help to transform young men who make a minor mistake. He's not a ponzi schemer, if goldie and crew can't generate enuff power with helping to keep things like this under wraps, he might as well jet off to some country bumpkin school where they know how to do that.

You got guys on the team that smoke a lil bit, it's college, that's what alot of them are going to do, if goldie thinks he can stop that entirely, good luck to him. None of this is the reason the defense has been trash, he took the laptop after the season was over. Also, he's not going to rob the other players, because he'd get dealt with. Welcome to Miami coach goldie, the community is watching how you handle this one, but shaat just got real.

The good coaches know how to navigate thru this process, we'll see if al takes the easy way out or if he abides by finnie overcoming this mistake. Again, to many people trying to pass judgement on a situation that in the old days wouldn't have even been news. goldie was crying earlier in the year talking about "weeding the garden" why would he cry about that type of stuff, if goldie is letting that type of stuff affect him to the point where he's using it as an excuse for why we're not succcessful on the football field, than he doesn't belong at UM either.

It's college, it won't be the first time and athlete steals something and it won't be the last, it's how the headcoach and the administration deals with it that makes the difference!

Grown men know right from wrong: stealing, taking what doesn't belong to you is lawless behavior. No excuses; terminate his scholarship, but assist with continued education at a Community College.

Having been in the military (and having graduated from the AF Academy, but UM alum from law school), there are few offenses worse than being a barracks (dormitory) thief. UM is better off kicking his arse off campus as persona non gratis.
