« Five former Hurricanes who left early for NFL keeping the faith (and Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all of you!) | Main | Another member (or former member) of the UM Hurricanes family snagged by Arkansas's Bielema »

His name is Sunny, he's very large, he's from Nigeria and he's a future Hurricane

The Hurricanes are full of players with cool stories.

As of February, it appears we'll add one more to the stockpile.

Nigerian native Sunny Odogwu, 6-8 and listed by various websites as anywhere from 300 to 315 pounds, told recruiting services on Friday that he has committed to coach Al Golden and the University of Miami.

An offensive tackle, Odogwu played last season at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. He arrived in the United States when he was 16, and first played basketball at Huntington Prep in West Virginia.

Odogwu told CaneSport, which first reported his commitment, that he expects to arrive on campus in January to be there in time for spring practice.

"His willingness to want to learn is without comparison, St. Frances Academy (Maryland) football coach Messay Hailemariam told the Clarion-Ledger. "I've never seen anything like it. I've never seen the hunger I've seen in him. When you look at him he absolutely passes the eye test, but his desire to work actually exceeds that.''

If he ends up excelling at tackle, what a coup for the Hurricanes. But he's obviously raw. His story sounds amazing.

After transferring from Huntington Prep to Baltimore St. Frances, he played football for the first time there as a senior.

"I came to Maryland and began playing football because people said I was too aggressive for basketball,'' Odogwu told CaneSport. "I love football. You can hit and nobody will call fouls, so it's awesome.''

According to CaneSport, Odogwu grew up in Africa "sharing a 12x12 room with 10 family members. With one bed pushed up against a wall for his parents, there was no room for him to sleep inside. So he'd take a wooden mat, lay it outside the front door and go to sleep.''

Looking forward to the big guy's arrival, and our first interview.

Sunny, Welcome to the U!

Welcome 'Dog!...Hopefully your heart and work ethic matches that frame of yours.

GO CANES!!

WELCOME Sunny Odogwu!!!!!!!!!!! WELCOME to THE U!

Can he play hoops too?

Anyone 6 8 is welcome to the U.....especially on the football team.Ummmmmmmmmmmmm.has he ever played some MEAN DT?????????THAT spot is more critical at the U for it s football team.Hope Canes close on a couple JUCO DT s.Don t know how else the team can otherwise improve on DEFENSE.Sure doubt it will be from the "coaching up" that it has needed.(and hasn t received).

please develop him into a DT

It would be nice if he wanted to REALLY hit people and be a DT!!!!!!

I've been watching our recruiting- we are pulling up the rear- common al golden

USC has 10 top 100 recruits according to rivals- MIAMI has ZERO. Very sad

ZERO!!,!,! WAKE UP!,!,!,!

Lance.....RELAX

Remember where Randy Shannon's 4 top 10 classes got us?

How about Butch Davis' classes (none ranked in the top 10) that got us back to the TOP of college football?

According to ESPN'S ratings, we already have 5 players grading out higher than the best player on our team did last year....DUKE JOHNSON.

I'd say Golden is doing pretty well under the circumstances!!

SunDog sounds like a freakin' monster .

If his work ethic is as good as it sounds (and it should be a lesson to those that think success is handed to them) , he should be a force .

there's a mouse in my house.
oh what a fright
how will i sleep tonight?
on the bottom of my shoe
a commercial for tamiflu

5 players better than Duke??L0L...troll..

Miami needs 2 DT's, 1 CB and 1 S (plus the ones we have already committed)

The 0L and TE were not our worst areas, it was Defense! The first that needs to go is D corch and his scheme!!

No Trollin only the facts....

Welcome to the U young man. Can't wait to see you in the orange and green. If this kid can play DT then it would be great but by being 6ft 8 he is probably too tall. It would be interesting seeing him there though if he has that raw power to plug a hole. If not sounds like a mountain of a man for a DE to try and get by as an OT. And really what do some of you dunce's think that we are going to just go out and get a slew of 5 star guys right from the start? Schnelly didn't get that to start with. It takes time, winning, and that stupid shapiro thing to get past us first. And by the way all those 5 star guys that Shannon and Coker pulled in didn't do squat. It's a kid who comes in with a great work ethic and allows themselves to be coached up like McGee did this past year and all of these young players coach Golden has brought in does that will lead us back.

Of course you all have to keep bringing up the past. When is the last time you have seen a 6-8 dt no leverage. Some of you claim to know football but trying to put him at dt would be like trying to put a defensive end in the flats and having a dt back pedal into coverage. There is a very good chance we might put him there with our inept dc.lol

Or better yet maybe we can try him out at safety or te or something.lol

No, keep him on offense! More room for The Duke to run haha!

No disrespect to our former CB, but do not post this crap as if the staff turned him into a 1st day pick!

nolekiller69 Johnson was a 5 star recruit, there are no 5 start recruits on the U's list this year. The recruits may all be great this year and hopefully pan out. But there are ZERO recruits rated higher than Johnson this year. The highest rated recruits are 4 stars. Please take a look again at your post.

Sunny is a Beast and He loves to go after D Lineman! Great get for Al and the Hurricanes!

Sunny Interview: http://canesinsight.com/media/m900

Nolekiller, not worried. It's a small class anyway and as of last week Stanford and one other Top 25 school were ranked similarly on rivals due to the low number of commitments. And Miami is facing maxiumum headwinds right now as the NCAA investigation wraps up. Al Golden will never again face the level of negative recruiting that he is facing now.

Thank you Susan for bringing us recruiting information on the canes over the Holidays. Any kind of news on recruits, coaching candidates, etc., is what the canes fans are looking for.

Happy New Year

Its this kids life experiences, desire to excel, learn and compete that will make this kid a success. This kid will end up being a positive influence and make the O'linemen work harder. We complain about prima donnas then get upset we they act so. Football is about development! When you've got a guy with all the physical attributes- then the desire and willingness to lear and work his butt off then you'll have a great player. Welcome to the U son. Show those unappreciative kids how greatness is achieved!

6-8 300 lbs- means he has the frame to get to 325-330. OT. Nothing more. Unless he is freakeshly athletic, then I would consider putting him at D end

This man knows what he's talking about. I've been saying it and noticed it for a while now, you can tell who knows football on here and who doesn't. That's why it's a wate of time to reply to some of the people on here, lol. A 6'8 d-tackle, lol, that man would get kilt. The funny thing is, when you read about him, his coach says the same thing that irritates me about goldie and his boy, "he passes the eyeball test" translation, "looks like tarzan, might play like jane". That statement doesn't apply to the new recruit, i hate hearing coaches say that because those type coaches pass over alot of talent and are more concerned with how a guy looks as oppose to a guy who's more talented.

The litmus test for this staff is already here and in place, we're not some program that's hoping to be dominant, the blue print here is clear. This coaching that came in, particularly goldie and hos boy, they need to get the weight manangement under control here, to much displaced weight, they need to focus more on the strenght and speed aspect of training like we're use to and what swasey does best as oppose to this straight power philosophy. What people don't realize with this staff, spence would've never been recruited here as a linebacker with them, in their eye's/eye ball test, he's a strong safety.

Thank goodness they weren't here when SEAN TAYLOR was here, they said it when they came in, their recruiting the guys who are what they deemed "True positions". In other words, they want a linebacker right now who's around 220 out of highscool. Right now, ou all displaced weight team below:

3g a.k.a anthony chickilo=265lbs(to heavy he needs to drop 10 lbs, but he passed their eyeball test)

asante cleveland=270lb(needs to drop at least 15lbs, passed their eyeball test)

dyron dye=275lbs(how do they expect a player at junior left tackle weight to get open)

If any of our linebackers theat played gaine more weight, they'll all fit this category come next year, none of them with the exception of eddie johnson who's already their and is natural at 240 need to be over 235, to 230 should be their max.

They're trying to bulk up tyriq mccord now to 245 pounds in his second year, lol, i'm hoping i'm wrong, but that seems to be conssitent and more than likely will put him in the displaced weigth category and render him ineffetive his sophmore year as well. 245 is good weight for tyriq around his junior year not now.

Jadeveon Clowney DE 6-6 256
Werner (6-4, 255 pounds)
Damontre Moore LB 6-4 250
Barkevious Mingo, DE, LSU around 250
Sam Montgomery DE 6-4 240
///////////////////////////

Some of the top defensive ends in college, 3g was more effective last year when he was around or below this weight than he was this year at 265lbs, but this staff will want him at 270 as well instead of grooming him to his more natural weight.

pro tight-ends
jimmy graham Ht 6-7 Weight: 265
tony gonzalez Ht 6-5 Weight: 247
jermaine gresham HT 6-5 Weight: 260
gaytor hernandez Weight:245
gronkowski Ht 6-6 Weight 265
//////////////////////////

Why again do we have asante and dyron weighing more than pro tight-ends. Than when you look at the guys they're bringing in, dobbish and kerr, i don't think they plan on leaving those guys around 250 and 265 tops in the name of being more physical.

We're use to having speed on both sides of the ball, goldie and his boy oach OH-NO's philosophy is straight big 10 sqaure peg style defense/defenders.

Another post spoken like a True Cane, lol. The question is, what do goldie and his boy consider a top notch db, i'm afraid it's a guy like chase minnifield, who was solid, but nothing special. I kept hearing goldie say, "some of these guys think they're better than what they are" in reference to the players, but goldie is the last one that needs to talk, he thinks his boy OH-NO is better than what our defensive stats were this year and the other mac staff defensive coaches he brought. Until either his boy oach OH-NO produces or goldie quits promoting him or gets rid of him, he's the last one i want to hear that statement coming from again.

What goldie and his boy doesn't understand just like eddie gran(the runningbacks coach at Fsu who couldn't wait to get out of this state) didn't, they don't understand the confidence level guys have in themselves, it's up to the coaches to set up a system that guides and forces their confidence to match their talent, that's what we've always had in place, the system that would give you the same opportunity to produce as all the other Great players that came thru here.

Sunny, Welcome to the U and sunny Miami! Great decision!

DEFENSE,DEFENSE,DEFENSE. I would get excited if this guy was a DT.

To LANCE, stop worrying about USC and who they recruit. Due to the sanctions they will be as thin as skim milk for the next 3 or 4 years. As far as the U we are going to be in the same boat, how thin will depend on the sanctions we get. Stop worrying about other programs and worry about the Canes.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

William Gholston, 6'8" 280 lbs all world defensive linemen...he not only plays havoc against the running game and rushing the passer he forces QB's to adjust their throwing motion to get the ball above his outstreched arms.

With keyhoe he can take this dude and make him into something special.

Calvin and all the rest of the dumbasses up here, What I was implying you genious's that U are not is that I have never seen a 6ft 8 DT play unless he was freakishly athletic. And McGee did have his best years of production under Golden and company and exhibited the most growth during that time. I never said he was all world as a db to begin with but he was much better under Golden and company than under the prior regime.

Your quick to call people dumb azzess but you make no sense at all and are always trying to compare what golden did as compared to Shannon. Randy is not the coach anymore goldens record as a coach and decision making is average at best. Lets hope he gets better for the sake if the U.

1st, we do have top kids on espns 150. I think 5 kids grade out at 80 or higher of our 11 committs.
2nd after the top 5-10 studs, rating a 3 -5 star kid at 17 yr old is a crapshoot. Jimmys classes in the 80s were never top 10 classes, butches classes werent ranked high, heck ed reed was a 2 or 3 star I think, kyle wright was a 5 star. .... what U do in high school means squat. Some kids are primadonnas and some get home siok, some played vs weak competiton.

GOLDEN IS BUILDING DEPTH...........Look at the gators when zook was bringing in all those kids and playing fres and soph in 2002-04, buy the time meyer got there, they were loaded in 2005. Golden is building depth , talent, and high character guys. IT TAKES TIME PEOPLE> Heck jimmy lost 5 games in 1984 his 1st year.... Butch lost for 4 seasons until he got his people in place. We have a top 5 qb coming in, 2 stud DBS, 2 top TE's inc #1 Juco TE, and 5-6 spots left. WE ARRE IN GOOD SHAPE EVEN IF WE GET 5 SCHOLLY REDUCTIONS FOR 2 YEARS......3 POST SEASON BOWL BANS ALREADY WITH ACC TITLE GAME...............by 2014, the 1st year of the playoffs, when duke is a junior, howard is a junior, and all these young studs are beefier, we are gonna b a great team . GIVE IT TIME....STARS MEAN SQUAT. . WE ARE RANKED IN TOP 25 ON ESPN EVEN w/11 COMMITTS........

Lol

Dawg

Yeah he'll challenge anybody to dispute D'umbnofrio's record...

117 in the nation ain't hard to dispute at all.

One poster already put it plain as day that no d is over his head...Tcu had as many frosh and 1st year starters on their defense and they finished in the top 20 not the bottom 4.

Tally is right. The proof is in the records. Worst ever defense doesn't look good on any resume. Just because this kids big doesn't mean nuthin'. Just more hype from manny and susan, which never gets lived up to. I hope manny won't punish us with the "top 50" player thing again next year. His heart aint with the canes anyway. Golden has a lot to prove, at least there is room to get better, especially on defense.

5 of our 11 kids on espn are 4 star and 3 espn 150 players ....half our list basically are top studs. GIVE IT A REST HATERS.......WAIT TILL GOLDIE LANDS 3-5 TOP STUDS> HERES THE TOP 5 ON ESPNS LIST

This is a classic case of player development, something the current OC and HC know nothing about.

It's time for somebody to go: Who's first? The OC? The DC? The HC?

nash, lol, his boy walks around UM with that "my scheme works" look on his face, but yet the players that won championships in highschool are being questioned for coming in with to much confidence, lol. Once a guy plays in a scheme, you can tell what works and what doesn't work, doesn't take long before the rest of the players on defense starts calling out oach OH-NO for calling a scared man defense.

nash, we got people over here saying move this 6'8 kid to d-tackle, it gets comical by the day.

Lol

Dawg I cant half way blame folks for that kind of thinkin..

Some ppl have seen enuff of teams running up one side of our arse and down the other..

big body athletic desire what more could you want. just
needs coaching a little time. Go Canes

hey calvin y dont u apply for the d coordinator since u know so much apply your schemes somewhere optimist high school lingerie league i mean u post like u know everything thats wrong & how to make it right but you dont coach no where in dade broward or monroe counties & to touch on the kids no what works & what doesn't is absurd your post are ridiculous & quite funny coming from an arm chair observer that i know from a fact u dont go to the games so put the key board down & go flip a burger

He can't do any worse than the dc at the present.

Sonny played linebacker and nost tackle in hs,and was also the teams kicker, ,, the kid does gymnastics with my daughters and does kung fu.. he willplay wherever he will help.. he is totally not into himself

Tally, let me ask you this then did we win a coastal division title with Shannon or Coker? No! Have you ever seen this team quit under Golden like they did under Shannon or Coker? NO! Have you ever seen a player been given a job or position like Shannon did with Golden as our Head Coach? NO! Has the overall team play with as much heart and enthusiasm under Shannon as they have Golden? NO! Shannon has 4 years and his teams regressed. Golden's teams have progressed. The defensive scheme only didn't work as good as it will because our D line didn't get pressure on the qb's because they are young. Shannon never had a player hit like Bush, Perryman, and Johnson. I mean you guys act like Shannon was Nick Saban or something. Once these guys have had 4 years to recruit and put their scheme in place with their players without all this NCAA infractions crap then and only then will these coaches be able to fairly be judged. Until then Golden has done in two years with a team full of freshmen and sophomores what Shannon could not do in four years and that's win a Coastal division title. Yeah Calvin with the two left feet from 227 really knows more than a guy who has built a top 20 defense from nothing before. Oh yeah that goes down one of the dumbest comments of all time.

Welcome to the University of Miami Sunny (I personally believe it is spelled Sonny, but who am I to 2nd guess SMD. Again, Welcome to UM big fella.

As far as people wanting to convert him to a DT, unless he has surgery and the shrink him to 6' 4" at the most 6' 5", he will not be a good DT. 6' 8" is WAY too tall for a DT. At that height, playing DT, he would lose leverage and eventually he would have serious back injuries. Your typical dominant DT is between 6' 1" - 6' 3". Check out the stats on Russell Maryland, Warren Sapp, Jerome Brown, MCdougle, Damien Lewis, Vince Wolfork or any other dominant DT on any other team college or pro. 6' 8" is truly even too tall for a DE (and don't give me Ed "too tall" Jones, he was a freak and the only truly great DE over 6'6"). At 6" 8" and over 285 LBS., the only true position for Sunny/Sonny is on the offensive line.
