UM announces the signing of junior college tight end Beau Sandland -- he chooses the Canes over Arizona State and Nebraska

Highly recruited Woodland Hills, Calif., Pierce Community College tight end Beau Sandland has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Miami and will play for the Miami Hurricanes.

UM announced the news Wednesday afternoon.

Sandland is counted toward the 2013 signing class -- the newest class. The rest of the class signs in February.

Sandland is rated by Rivals.com as a four-star player, and is listed as 6-6 and 250 pounds. He chose the Hurricanes over finalists Arizona State and Nebraska. Sandland is ranked the No. 6 overall junior college player and No. 1 tight end prospect by 247Sports.com.

In eight games as a sophomore in 2012, Sandland caught 24 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns, earning first-team All-Pacific Conference honors. As a freshman, he had 20 catches for 265 yards and two touchdowns.

Sandland had about 25 offers, including Southeastern Conference schools Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas A&M, MIssissippi and LSU. But he eliminated the SEC in early October, saying he needed to take an online math class in order to graduate early in December and arrive at a new school in time to compete in spring practice. The SEC, he said, requires that student-athletes must take their online math (and/or English) classes through the school they will attend.

"There's no way I'm not leaving in December,'' he told ESPN in October. "I feel that it's really crucial to enroll early and go through spring ball. That's been my plan since day one, since I was still in high school talking to the PIerce coaches.''

His official visit to UM was Dec. 1, and he told reporters he loved it. Wednesday, in a ceremony at his school, he cited the coaching staff, tight end tradition, returning UM quarterback and academics among the reasons he chose the Hurricanes, according to recruiting services.

The Hurricanes have been aching for a tight end who makes a major impact. It's been far too long without one.

NCAA story - must read:

Susan, If he arrives early does that count as one of our 15 scholarships for this year?

Can I call him SANTAland, because us dudes in the 239 just got a Christmas present. LOL.

CANE4LIFE

I like it, but believe we're over doing at TE. DL,LB, WR and DB's where the needs are. Oh and more importantly the release of D'Onofrio. If he doesn't reel Keith Bryant back in and secure Bostwick at DT's then he just ain't worth it coaching or recruiting wise.

WELCOME TO THE U MR. SANLAND

The above story is indeed a must read! It is important that the door be opened to the NCAA's business tactics, restrictions on individual rights and enforcement and penalties. The NCAA is the biggest racket outside of the Insurance and Financial institutions.

You read the ny times? pathetic!

Welcome to the U!!!!

Good decision. If I'm a TE that wants to go pro... I'm going to Miami. The U might have slipped in the BCS rankings lately, but they still have the most players in the NFL. If you want to keep playing high school ball, go to UF. If you want to play in the NFL, go to the U.

Canesport has 10 verbal commits. Not including this kid. There were 11 last time I checked yesterday- did someone else de-commit?

This is a great catch. Tampa cane- I disagree. We need TEs just as bad. Notice how much better we were doing when Dyron Dye or Clive actually caught some passes. It's a no-brainer.

I agree about the nCAA- check out Barry jacksons column on the interview between the NCAA and a former cane player. They treated him like a criminal. And they seem like they are desperate. They just cant get any concrete proof! All hearsay from a ponzi-scheming runt. Plus the tactics that they are using are gross. I just wish someone uses aggressive legal tactics to go AFTER the NCAA rather than always defending themselves. Seems like everyones afraid of this cartel

Notice to the haters:

He picked The U over Oklahoma, Nebraska, ASU. Despite our "horrible" facilities, bad fans, poor attendance, etc.

I mean, he's smart. He knows about NFL-U:

Bubba Franks
Shockey
Winslow Jr.
Greg Olsen
Jimmy Graham

Michael: I added to the blog that today's signing counts toward the upcoming 2013 signing class. The non JC players will sign in February, for the most part.

UCane305 (CANE4LIFE), as long as his name isn't BADland, I think you're fine. Merry Christmas!

Another Must Read from Joe Nocera, who has been on the NCAA's case for a long time and the issues he raises need to be fully read and shared. NCAA = Judge, Jury, and Executioner!

This Sandlin TE is the best JUCO TE prospect of them all a report said.At 6' 6" and 250....he ll be a nice target.Hope he has a little speed. He s a 4 star with experience ...so we ll see.Guess the sanctions haven t scared him away.I saw he was offered by LSU,Georgia,Oklahoma,Texas,Texas A&M,Ariz State,Nebraska ......and even Florida.

The commit Miami lost was a TE from Tampa:

UM probably told him we were signing the juco TE mentioned here.

If you haven't seen his highlight video check it out you tube. This kid can play tight end or a big receiver. Quick feet and great hands.

Susan you just gave us 'Canes fans the best Christmas presentwe could ever have wished for.

Great reporting on landing Beau, and kudos to the Coaches and player in early December, who impressed Beau on his visit with our 'Canes, and the team overall.

Have a Happy Holiday Susan and Manny also.

We KNOW that 2013 is going to be a good Year.

Welcome to the family Beau..
Go 'Canes Always

Good decision Beau Sandland, you will not be sorry you came here. We are glad to have you and wish you all the best.

Susan I think you are wrong about Sandland going against this years class...he is going against 2012 class(i am pretty sure of it)...i will give fellow bloggers the arithmetic on how this works...you have 25 scholarships per year with the option to carry over scholarships if you don't use all 25....Goldens first year they signed 16...which left them with 9 extra..we signed 33 last year with 8 early enrolles....(dewey,crow,gunter,gadbois,flowers,kirby,hope,witt) Ok does 8 went against 2011 class and out of that 33 we signed total, David thompson got a baseball scholarship, Angelo Jean Louis never got his ..So in a technical sense Miami signed 23 for 2012 and can use two more towards 2012(devante bond and sandaland) now i don't know how it will work out with vernon davis's scholarship since he never participated in games and maybe never attended classes...if he never attended class(which i think he did) we will have one more to go towards 2012...with that being said, we will sign a total of between 15-18...If you think Im off just listen to the post game duke conference and Coach G said we will sign give or take 15-18 kids...Now this is why I really love coach Golden not only are we more than likely done with any type of post season ban but when the NCAA hits us with scholarship reductions we will be a year ahead...Also I can't wait to see the rest of the 4 to 6 guys we get....IN COACH G I TRUST...

Thanks Susan! He committed around Chirstmas; my U needs a Christmas present, so, he will always be referred to as: SANTAland. LOL. Merry Christmas Canes! From Fort Myers to Miami, ITS ALL ABOUT THE U!

CANE4LIFE

Good pick up.
have you guys noticed that Asante Cleveland went from #1 Tight End to disappearing? Walford stepped up and these coaches are doing a good job of noticing players who are not fit to play their role just yet.

Thats what Miami Tradition has been, Tight Ends and running the ball...Keep it going

Now u know why the Tampa kid passed he was told the number one juco te prospect was in, plain and simple. Golden always finds the guys . Remember guys decommit all over the country , all the schools bama nd USC, all of them. All that matters is getting what u need.

Also if push comes to shove we could give Artie Burns a track scholarship since he will be running track

I could be wrong about Sandaland..only reason is bcuz Alex Fig from Va might go against last year instead of Sandalin...regaardless whether you use Sandalin or Fig as counting towards 2012 my math is still correct

Hmmm. A tight end. That's odd. Maybe 'Goldy and company have some kind of new tight end-oriented offense in mind. Anything to get better use of the superstar players UM already has is OK with me.

UM lost the LB from Bartow, who chose FSU. Guess why?

DOESN'T MATTER! THE CANES WILL WIN 10-11 GAMES NEXT YEAR IF THE DEFENSE IMPROVES! WHEN GIOVANNI BERNARD DECIDED TO GO PRO THAT GIVES US A GREATER CHANCE FOR A VICTORY AT NC. NOW WE ONLY NEED TO WIN ONE OF THESE 3 GAMES FLA,FLA ST. ND. WE SHOULD BEAT FAU,SAVANNAH ST, SOUTH FLA. DUKE,GA.TECH, NCST,VIRGINA,VA.TECH, WAKE FOREST. THAT WOULD GIVE US 10 WINS AND ACC COASTAL DIVISION AGAIN. AFTER THIS YEAR ND LOSES A LOT OF TALENT AND MUST COME TO PLAY US IN FLORIDA(ORLANDO) FLA ST LOSES MANUEL AND WILL HAVE A DOG FIGHT WITH THE CANES NEXT YEAR(MAYBE TWICE) AS FOR THE GATORS IT HARD TO TELL EXCEPT ONE THING! THEY NEVER WIN IN SOUTH FLA. AND THEY ALWAYS STRUGGLE EARLY IN THE SEASON WITH "LESSER COMPETITION". IF THE RIGHT THINGS FALL INTO PLACE DON'T BE SURPRISED! THE CANES PLAYING ALL THOSE YOUNG PLAYERS TAKING THEIR LUMPS THIS YEAR WILL ONLY BENEFIT THEM NEXT YEAR. THEY ONLY NEED THIS DEFENSE TO IMPROVE AND THEY JUST MIGHT GO 11-1 OR UNDEFEATED. THEY WILL BE BEST IN ACC!

Welcome to the Hurricane Family, Beau.
It's gonna be good!

Merry Christmas to us baby!
Go canes!

we need that linebacker from booker T.

So maconald left for arkansas.

Now we need a wide receivers coach. Good recruiter also.

Why no comments by the herald on this coach loss?

With young mcdonald gone, he was a real good wide-receivers coach. Not sure why he's going to Arkansas, but i'm sure he got a raise though, but they don't pass the ball much and they don't have the athlete's, but of course it's more to chosing a school than that. Good luck to young mcdonald. Might be a good time to bring coach soldinger back in the fold, he can damyum near coach any position, when it comes to recruiting, that's another situation, he's not azzz kissin, all he's going to do is tell a kid, look, if you want to learn how to win, you come to Miami, and you just want to hope to win, you go other places.

I'm sure we'll get a good wide receivers coach, but we will see, i'm sure the guys will miss coach mcdonald though, he use to get hype out their. Miami might just be to wild for em though.

Welcome to the UM FAMILY Beau. Once a Cane, ALWAYS a Cane.
Study hard, practice hard and you will succeed beyond your own expectations.
Merry Christmas to you, and all Canes fans...OK, EVERYONE! LOL

The team is loaded. Just young. It's like Uf under Urban meyers last season and chimps fort year. Lot of young talent but needed experience. Well, we r young n loaded. By 2014 w should b a force

Good post terry king. When the U was at its best we always have at least one good te. I hope Johnson re commits IMO we need to get as many te as possible the more big targets we have the better. If golden can get us one maybe two impact dt's, Thomas and Montgomery that will be al we need. We also need to get one ore two lineman for keyhoe to groom. Welcome to the U Beau.

Excellent read about the corrupt NCAA:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/04/opinion/nocera-the-next-tobacco.html?src=xps&_r=0

Interesting in light of what's going on with the UM investigation.

Good call, Reno.

hire lamar thomas for our wide receiver coach.

as predicted.....de-comitts galore....unless golden fires dnofrio and makes a statement Um goes nowhere next season....all living in a fantasy world...fsu/florida are killing us in every way.

Play at the wide-receiver position has been the one, consistently-bright spot on this team during the dark times and McDonald was their coach. I don't like that he's going to Arkansas, but I wish him the best.

Clive finished the year strong. Now we pick up a highly-touted prospect in Sandland. Looks like Xmas to me.

jim gallo - you couldn't manage a two car funeral

Dear Santa Ruben Foster Please ......

Gallo = fool = idiot = knows nothing = loser

de-commits galore? Haha...we upgraded idiot...

1. alex collins
2. keith bryant
3. travis johnson
4. kermit whitfield
5. jayron kearse

and lost angelo jean-louis

never in UM history has this happened....but then again alot of UM records broken with al golden...more to come...

here drink so more kool aid

Angelo doesnt have the grades again to make it in!

upgrading..thats funny, what a complete idiot....lets see how these tier 3 recruits make out...

however florida and fsu have their way with local recruits....keep posting your wish list....remember after tuesday all santa request expire....its like an option, lol

I'm surprised no one else has said it yet, but I will.

Enter Sandland.

Now I hope the U gets a tough-as-nails DC.

But seeing as it seems very easy for other schools to hire talented young coaches away from the U, I'd say it's either not a very good place to work (for some reason) or the pay is low.

I'm surprised no one else has said it yet, but I will.

You poor little girls are a pathetic bunch.
You get all exited cause a TE chose to attend Dah U
A freaking TE, meanwhile the very few good D line commits have de commited
So you have nothing for a position of need
But you have another TE
Maybe he can help out score the opponents as you still have no D
Or maybe he can also play LB or D line to help stop the scoring deluge
Or maybe you are all a bunch of delUsional dweebs
Santaland? A Christmas present? Serriously?
How low have you dUmmies sunk, how little does it take to get you excited.
Terry King is the doUche of the blog with his posts. FYI cane clowns, UF is top 3 in recruting, FSU is top 10, you are in the 20s, which is good for losers like you but nothing to get exited about. Your new TE prospect makes it 11 lousy clowns who have commited to your sorry program. News falsh dUmmies, you need a heck of a lot more to be competitive.
All dUmb, delUsional and in denial is no way to go through life clUcks!!

@ Azcane - the other NCAA article is good too - thanks.
