Booker T. coach Tim "Ice" Harris says he's stunned UM pulled scholarship from Kirkland

This isn't the type of finish UM coach Al Golden had in mind.

With less than a week before National Signing Day, the Hurricanes have pulled a scholarship offer from a top recruit at a major high school power in Miami-Dade County and angered its head coach.

Booker T. Washington coach Tim "Ice" Harris said Thursday it was grossly unfair for the Hurricanes to pull their offer from All-American offensive lineman Denver Kirkland right after the team's state championship parade through Overtown.

Harris, who himself worked on UM's staff under Randy Shannon and whose son Brandon was a standout cornerback at UM, said he had assured UM coaches privately Kirkland had decided to sign with the Canes and was simply waiting until National Signing Day to announce. But because Kirkland wasn't willing to commit before then and make the announcement public, Harris said, assistant Micheal Barrow told him the program "was moving in a different direction."

"This had nothing to do with academics and everything to do with UM doing something unfair to a local kid," Harris said. "Denver has a 2.8 GPA and has the test score.

"Coach Golden visited the school today before our parade and told Denver everything he wanted to hear. Then, a couple hours later, everything changed. I told them Denver was all set to go there for the academics. This isn't the way UM should be doing business, not with the kids in their own backyard."

Harris said Barrow asked for a private meeting following the parade and asked Kirkland flatly if he would commit. Harris said Kirkland told Barrow UM was in the top three, but he wanted to wait until Signing Day to announce.

"I just don't understand why they couldn't wait," Harris said. "The same way [linebacker] Matthew Thomas is a big-time kid, Denver is the same big-time offensive lineman. Let the kid enjoy his moment. If they were going to do this to him, why not let him know well ahead of time so he could plan another visit. Don't come to us in the end and say you're going in another direction because of a defensive lineman."

Asked if this would affect Thomas' recruitment, Harris said: "I just look at this from a loyalty perspective. If we commit to something and show you love and tell you we're going to do something, just wait for it to happen. I've never seen anything of this magnitude. I'm not sure what this does for UM in Miami as a whole... I'll never tell a kid not to go somewhere, but it's tough for me to tell my kids to trust UM at this point.

"They don't know when an offer is going to get pulled, if they're going to do what they did to Denver today. He's an All-American. I just don't understand how they let him get out of here. I won't stop anybody from going to UM, but I can tell you I'll never help them again."

There is something missing here...it does not gel.

Go to be cane clUcks... U lose again

What did y'all miss in this article? Harris assured Miami that Kirkland was going to Miami, BUT Kirkland after the parade told Barrow that Miami was in the top 3. Kirkland himself should have manned up and told Barrow that I'm gonna be a Hurricane, but I want to announce it on NSD. Instead he told Barrow that Miami was in the top 3. These kids either want to be part of the Hurricane family or they don't. If they can't decide then Miami is not In their heart. Let them go!!! Go Canes!!! Way to put your foot down Coach Golden!!!
It's All About The U!!!

Hola Arty... 20+ 4 n 5 Stars coming to TitleTown.

What happened is simple. Denver Kirkland told the UM staff he couldn't commit because he wasn't sure. UM got to the point where they feared the Kirkland, Thomas, Coley, Bryant crew were all stringing UM along already knowing FSU is where they were going to be. They were stringing UM along so UM wouldn't have enough time to recover and get replacements for these kids. This is a clear indication UM wanted to force these players hands now to at least give them a week to find replacements. These kids have been leaning towards FSU for a while and UM knew it. This was a last gasp attempt and it failed. This was no big deal as these kids were headed to FSU, and UM knew it.

Ice Cream best shut his mouth before Mike Barrow breaks him in half like he did me.

BTW UM are idiots for thinking Coley was going to get these guys to go to UM after Coley spent the last two years at FSU selling these kids on why FSU offers so many things that UM doesn't. A real fan base, a real on campus stadium that is not half empty, hot girls that actually recognize and worship the football players unlike the Miami campus. No pressure and distractions from the hometown Miami friends and family. A real college atmosphere and campus that is not a commuter school...etc...etc.. and most importantly no sanctions to worry about.

Canes are about to be like the Dolphins reliving past glory like the 72 undefeated season to keep their brand relevant. Pathetic. Canes are has-beens. The half empty stadium says it all. We are also going to be bombarded with the "we are back" BS every time the Canes win meaningless games just like the Knicks/Cowboys fanbases do all the time.

Siding with Golden on this one. No room for error with limited schollys. Either commit or take a hike. Ice has sour grapes still from the whole Shannon thing.

I feel sorry for Kirkland and Ice is doing what he is supposed to do when he is emotional, but Golden came in to sell the deal and Barrow came in to close the deal because his commitment would have kept Miami from going in any other direction. Miami has to do what is best for Miami especially if other OL have already committed and are enrolled early.

Bottom line is Miami is the place to be and if this is the year we are not taking that many OL and he should have jumped on the opportunity when you heard an unknown and unranked OL has committed to UM. Failure is not an option. Furthermore, Ice is to blame because he knows that the depth chart limits how many recruits in a particular position we take. He should have educated Kirkland. For example, We were only going to take only one QB and the one QB we offered took his offer and did not back out of it or waiver because he knew that we were only going to take one QB and it would be whoever commits first. If he did not commit and we still did not have our QB then we would have gladly taken Jacoby Briscoe as a transfer. It worked very good for us the last time we took a former Gator QB and I'm sure it would have been the same result if not better.

UM gave the kid a chance to commit before pulling offer. They upheld their end of the bargain. His coach and the kid did not hold up their end. Obviously it was not a done deal as Harris would like you to believe since the kid wouldn't commit to Barrow less than a week to go before signing day. Bad PR for a couple of days, Harris was never a big UM supporter after he wasn't retained by Golden. Miami kids and their coaches need to stop playing so many games.

Who cares/

These clowns want to play the "Miami is in my top 3" game, well her you go. The program can play this game as well. Youwant to play for the U- then commit and stop all of this garbage.

And I guarantee youit was academics. Kid can go to an inferior school like FSU.

You want the U then stop the showmanship.

IS there a running back from FSUplayin in the NFL? No Leon Washington (punt returns) dont count!

Not good. Who's playing who ? No way this should have hit the press. Hopefully we have some backup silent commits.

EOT: thats the problem, UM has become the dolphins...too many years of mediocrity.....12 yrs, programs have turned around in less than 3. The golden hire was all wrong from the beginning....Ive said it 1000 tmes. he is not a 10-2 or 11-1 type of coach. he hasnt broke his 6.5 average loss per year stat....he wont either. Now the media is starting to see the same thing:

Bleacher report 1/28/2012

It’s too early to tell whether Al Golden will last in Miami. However, these past two seasons have been lackluster, and the ‘Canes may decide to switch coaches yet again. Finding the perfect coach is never easy. Alabama was able to lure Nick Saban away from the pros. Texas A&M found Kevin Sumlin, a coach who took Houston to the verge of a BCS bowl game. If Miami eventually decides to part ways with Golden, it should try to find a coach with a record of consistency and sustainable, long-term success.

All Gone by Golden:

keion payne
devonta davis
jeremy davis
ray ray armstrong
thomas finnie
gionni paul
travis williams
jamal reid
kelvin cain

Suspened or diciplined by Golden

vaughn telemaque
tracy howard
eddie johnson
curtis porter
luther robinson
darius smith(they asked him to lose weigh and he regressed and got benched)

kirkland - gone (pulled scholarship)
bostwick - gone (ignored him and parents at UM weekend)

collins - bryant (decommitted under him

keep drinking the koolaid....also his OC totally f....cks UM at the worst time (he was goldens hire)

The bottom line is Coach Ice should have known how many OL already committed and advised Kirkland to commit on the spot. We only have on LB and we need more so Thomas has the luxury to play that game not because he is so much better than Kirkland, but because we need a lot of LB and only have one commit at this time. Whoever Burns and Carter's coaches are they told their stud athletes to commit right away because Miami was not going to take that many recruits.

In the end Kirkland might have an offer available once everything settles because commitments silent or verbal are not binding until the fax comes in. If someone decides not to commit then Kirkland may have an offer. My advice to Ice is to have Kirkland announce at the latest time available just in case a Miami offer does become available. How weird would that be to having Kirkland wait all day when Miami has been waiting all year.

Truth is recruiting is like the prom. If an attractive date asks you to the prom you don't keep her waiting so you can flirt with other girls. You say yes, because if you keep her waiting and guessing she may end up going to the prom with someone else. #ByeBteThanksForPlaying.

Hopefully we have some backup silent commits.

2 stars are lining Up

Coach Harris and other coaches are doing their star players a disservice if their star player already knows what school he wants to play for and they advise them to play the hat game. Everybody wants to be LeBron and have their moment, but in real life could anyone get away with this? Go for any job interview and get an offer. After the offer tell that same company that you have to do other interviews before you can give them a final answer. Let's see how far that gets you. Coaches talk about teaching kids to become men and get caught up in the whole recruiting game. News flash!!! Real men do not play games with their career or future.

Therefore, if a coach knows their star player wants to play for a certain school after weighing out the pros and cons multiple times then that coach should tell his star player to commit and do not waiver. Coaches should teach players how to make good decisions and to stand by their decision/commitment.

Wow some real idiots on here, eot

so he pulled the offer from one of the top OL in the country so he can welcome an unknown Nigerian with open arms?

something's fishy here

"I just don't understand why they couldn't wait," Harris aid. "The same way [linebacker] Matthew Thomas is a big-time kid, Denver is the same big-time offensive lineman. Let the kid enjoy his moment. If they were going to do this to him, why not let him know well ahead of time so he could plan another visit. Don't come to us in the end and say you're going in another direction because of a defensive lineman."

lets piss off our feeder school during it parade of celebration.......maybe the coley hire was 2 fold. to also go in and try to clean up Goldens messes...

bad press all over the internet....thats got to help a few days before national signing day.....what total incompetence.....just like self sanctions....unbelieveble

Let me get this straight. Harris is mad because of Randy's firing(didnt he leave a year before Randy was fired anyway?), so why in the h*ll are his kids still considering the U then, if he is mad @ the school? My gawd, Al could walk in some of your homes & punch your dad in the face & make your mom suck him off & you guys will still find an excuse for the guy.

Hey potential recruits read my timeline along with Stem E Berry if you want insight on the U family. I ripped Horace Copeland and will do it to you too if you get out of line and not appease me.

#Canesfam #standbyuuntilidont

you know parents talk....good luck at booker T or northwestern.....a early christmas gift to...FSU - Florida - Alabama - lSU - ND....and especially Louisville...Strong got to be loving this...

Anyone notice this part of Harris quote: Don't come to us in the end and say you're going in another direction because of a defensive lineman."

Only way scholly is pulled is bc a big-time d-lineman (more importance) is in picture now. Dee Liner anyone? to go with Bostwick. Don't need Bryant.

bostwick is gone....that cant be it joeycanes.....bryant has already said he is history.....the point RC made is right...hy would we get rid of a top OL from a key feeder school for a unknownn Nigerian?

I'm with coach Golden on this. Why should a school have to participate in these kids narcissistic ego-maniacal last minute hat game when there is a kid willing to dedicate and commit NOW? Especially considering the scattered mind of a 17 or 18 year old kid. And we all know that not everyone listed as a 4 or 5 star recruit pans out.

We only need to look to Duke Johnson to reference an example of the type of attitude the idea U recruit should have.

Solid unwavering commitment from the very beginning.

Dear Clones,
Trust Golden...he knows what he's doing...

Why is it Florida has 25 SOLID commits. You know if a player wants to attend a certain school, then commit. Today's media has fostered this problem by making this kids seems like they are more important than the school. If he indeed was going to go to Miami, then he actually blew it, not the other way around.

you dont have too....the university can do whatever it likes....our competition will participate in these kids 15 mins of fame....they dont care, they're after the big picture.....all you have just done is give the recruiting teams more amunition to sway a player....

"here at FSU...ND...Florida..LSU, when we committ to a player we commit both on and off the field...that commitment will not only make you a terrific player but also a terrific peron"

are yu kidding me?.....A GIFT FROM GOD..TY LORD

If Golden and company laid it on the line before that parade-- but in return asked for his committment and he couldnt give it-- what would you do?

It's one kid, relax. If he really wanted to come to UM, he would've committed. Now he can continue with plans to go somewhere else. Why are we supposed to be at the mercy of these kids.

He N(Harris) was a close friend of Shannon and his kid played for Shannon. He never as a coach a true UM Booster even before this incident.

Heard that Thomas LB was not going to commit to UM and the reason why they offered Kirkland is to get Thomas. Thomas and Kirkland they discovered.

it dosent matter to golden.....he has no problem firing players...he has done it all year....he dosnt connect with these kids....not really.

he had to form a committee of players to act as a go between for his policies....jimmy - dennis - larry - butch - randy never had to do that....he is aloof a little...

seems like they cant play the game well and are getting frustrated....a sign of being inferior...extremely bad for the optics

Sad. But Randy had to give Ice a job to get his son Brandon to commit. He should have given Patrick Peterson's dad a job instead. Maybe Ice gets a job with the Hogs out of this one. Or maybe whoever gets in younger son next year. Just saying, Ice might not have the clean hands he acts like he does. Regardless, wuold have been nice to get this kid.

Im a canes fan and i wish all dade county kids head out of state -2c some real f the u

The U has a limited number of scholarships this year and possibly for the next several years. They have to use those scholarships wisely and if Denver wants to play games, well, the U is in the top 3, that doesn't tell the coaches anything, other, than they may have to scramble to find another player after the fact to fill the scholarship. Denver and Tim are playing a game and they just lost. Grow up and make a decision or, as in this case, a decision will be made for you. BTW if Tim worked for RS then that says a lot right there. As for Denver, good luck in your future, next time your asked to make a decision or this will happen again, it will be made for you. Because of your indecision, you've passed up an opportunity for a good education at a fine institution that would have carried you a long way in life. I know it has me.

Why all the games? They asked the kid straight up, will u commit? And to say um is in my top three is not an answer or commitment to the school u love.if u truly loved um u would have signed when u first got the scholarship a yr ago. U don't c this at bama or the other power house schools who lock up top local talent well before signing day then go looking for other talent to shore up their class. U kids from Miami say u love the u but they're not winning enough, well u top level kids from south Florida have the talent to put ur local school back on the map plus fans in the seats bcuz they're ur parents and friends and other family members coming to c u play. I know its ur choice but the school is right down the street, u never c other kids who have a power house school in they're backyard go out of state. Local coaches r to blame bcuz. These homegrown kids should b at the u no without question. Goldie did right, it's either yes or no son

he wanted him to commit before the sanctions get handed down...just another case of miami being a thug school..hell the coach is acting like a spoiled thug now

sav cane

I agree with you Papo. Who do these kids think they are? They are going to ruin my weekend.

"Marshall Henderson of Ole Miss Tested Positive For Cocaine and Marijuana Last Year...Tried To Buy $800 Worth Of Weed With Counterfeit Money In High School...."

SEC! SEC! SEC! SEC! The garbage conference strikes again. At least you can wave your worthless diploma while you yell SSEC!

Loyalty goes both ways Mr.Harris. If your kids can't make a solid commitment to play for THE U than these are the consequences. The U is building, and can't sit around waiting for wishy washy kids that may or may not commit. Duke Johnson committed 515 days prior to signing day, and was the most electrifying freshman in college football. He was committed, and has the desire to be a Miami Hurricane. The desire to be possibly a Seminole our arch rival does not sit well as a die hard Cane fan.

Let me get this straight. Harris is mad because of Randy's firing(didnt he leave a year before Randy was fired anyway?), so why in the h*ll are his kids still considering the U then, if he is mad @ the school? My gawd, Al could walk in some of your homes & punch your dad in the face & make your mom suck him off & you guys will still find an excuse for the guy.

rofl, this man knows what he's talking about. All i'm saying is, and these hypocrites know it, but had it been shannon as the headcoach, they wouldn't have spared that man no mercy for pulling a stunt like this. I said it whn the news first came out, the only way this'll make sense is if we getting bostwick & bryant or a combo of 2 solid d-tackles. It's still a problem though, when you start bringing in project recruits like sonny odogwu and guys like ufomba kamalu, but leave a guy like kirkland out, this ain't the georgetown hoya's.

WHil we may in fact scoop up another d-linemen or 2, it's definitely not worth all this hoopla, cause you gotta see tim and his boys again. Again, goldie is an outsider until he becomes part of a national championship team, so it was with all the coaches before him except butch davis who once he became headcoach, he had already been apart of a national championship team.

They had to know this wasn't going to be a good move, i'm sure coach barrow is calling guys and explaining to them what time it is on the situation, but this was almost a lane kiffin type move right here. If anything, overbook em, i'm not sure how we don't have anextra scahlorship, somebody'snumbers are off.

If we get shut out and don't get d-linemen in this class, lol, jethro has to go and definitely oach OH-NO and than goldie shouldn't be to far behind them if this is how recruiting is going to be. I know eduardo clements got the inside scoop.

I like how people are blaming kirkland and ice harris but praising goldie, lol, you can't make this stuff up with these hypocrites, shannon would've gotten crucified had this happened by these same numb nutz praising goldie.

Harris is full of sh*t and a delusional jerk. The kids and their families decide where a kid goes. A coach can give advice, but this Harris thinks he "allows" kids to go to UM. Give me a break!

And to all you pathetic low IQ FSU trailer park morons, Golden and Barrow stroked this kid for a year and the kid REFUSED to commit to UM. Guess what, The U is bigger than some immature kid playing games. Every school has a limited number of scholarships and must fill the class BEFORE all the good players are gone. They can't leave spots open praying kids pick their hat while they boost their 18 year old egos. Miami is now doing things right. Miami kissed this kid's ass for one year. He REFUSED to commit to Miami. Miami obviously had many pretty good or even better quality players wanting to commit so Miami told this kid, we need your commitment, we have other kids who want to be a Hurricane and we can't hold scholarships back on a "chance". Do you want to be a Hurricane? The kid wanted to play games and Miami said, sorry, scholarship is taken! That is the right way to run a football program. This high school idiot coach Harris apparently thinks Miami coaches should sit in their offices till signing day with no kids committed and hope that these "star" kids all pick a UM hat on signing day. What an IDIOT Harris is. Sorry pal, if you can't teach your players about real life and how to be mature young men, then you are the problem here not the University of Miami.

someone said in a prior blog that Golden was a "closer" in regards to recruiting, but I didn't know that meant closing the door on BTW high school
