« Cristobal's return to Miami surprising, but a very good thing | Main | Al Golden upholding the legacy: Mario Cristobal hiring is a hit with JJ, former Miami Hurricanes »

Mario is back in green and orange with his alma mater, the Miami Hurricanes.

   He's baaaack.

Mario Cristobal is returning to where it all began for him in college.

Cristobal, who has long been discussed as a potential head coach at UM should Al Golden ever leave, was fired last month as head football coach of FIU, and will be the University of Miami’s new tight ends coach, according to a source close to the situation.

Cristobal played at UM from 1988 through 1992, and won two national titles there. He coached at UM as a graduate assistant from 1998 through 2000, then as an assistant from 2004 through 2006.

Brennan Carroll, who has been the tight ends coach at UM, will shift to wide receivers coach.

Cristobal, who led FIU to its only two bowl games, was dismissed from FIU on Dec. 5 after coaching there for six seasons. He finished 3-9 with the Panthers in 2012 and 27-47 overall.

Cristobal is replacing former UM wide receivers coach George McDonald, who left UM for the same position at Arkansas.

Cristobal grew up in Miami and was an offensive lineman for the Hurricanes.

He is a good recruiter and knows the area as well as anyone.

His whole family is here, and this is the place he really wanted to stay. How do you all feel about him coming back to UM?

Wtf would um hire Mario That was stupid....the defense is shambles and golden does this....he is pathetic.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I smell gaturd fear......

Great hire! I like this hire a lot. Cristobal is a great recruiter and has south florida ties. Great hire coach Golden.

great hire NOW WE JUST NEED a DC
Welcome back Mario!!

This shows Golden is the ULTIMATE recruiter on & off the field. Great hire! Enough with the comments of Golden leaving, until Penn State has an opening - he's not going anywhere.

Jim gallo your statement didn't make any sense. Miami wasn't in any need of a DC or defensive assistants. So no-duh he hired Mario Cristobal as the TE's coach since Mario was a TE's coach at Miami before taking over at FIU.

I know Miami didn't have the best defense last year but it should improve. Just need to recruit some DT's. I mean look at Monty Kiffen USC struggled on defense and he was a top tier defensive coordinator from the NFL rank's.

Jim gallo is the same know-nothing moron who was on every blog he could find in December, going on and on about how it was a done deal Golden was leaving for Wisconsin. This according to Jim gallo's airtight 'sources'!

Keep complaining jim maybe at some point you will get lucky and be right about something. Until then everyone else is laughing at you as you sit in your miserable trailer in Gainesville.

Jim Gallo is one of the hundreds of mentally ill personalities/aliases presented to you by the Curse. Ignore the Baboon!

Great hire. Let's face it, we need all the help we can get at TE. But more importantly, Mario is a S. Fla. recruiting machine. That's where he'll help us the most.
Last but not least - he can start getting groomed & ready for the day that Al gets hired away or fired.

anyone who can get TY Hilton to go to FIU, can recruit for my favorite university anytime

TY Hilton let his baby decide. Had him crawl towards hats, he crawled to FIU.

Hey Susan, what is it with your fascination with Golden leaving the program. Any coach can leave any Program at anytime, but you don't hear people talking about it all the time. Golden decided to stay at UM knowing sanctions are coming. Isn't that worth something? Give it a rest until there is a good reason to say it. And one other thing. If Golden were to leave a few years down the line, I don't think Cristobal is the automatic choice, nor should he be. I love this hire, but it doesn't mean he's ready for a head coaching job at a Program like UM, former player or not.

Great to have Mario back in the U family. I'm really surprised that no other school wanted him to be the head coach, or at least something higher than a TE coach. Or perhaps they did but he didn't want the job. Whatever the case, I'm sure the TEs will be well-coached this year.

Great hire! I don't know if Mario knows anything about coaching tight ends but he will be an absolute recruiting monster!

Good hire! Let's get a new Defensive Coord quick in a hurry. Hopefully Ray Lewis will be able to help Mark.D out in coaching his defense. I say offer Don Soldinger a job. Don & Kehoe coaching offensive weapons together again would be a great site to see again. Bring back Don Soldinger please! We need a consistent 1,000 Running back. And grab Miacheal Irvin or Mark Duper to be hired as a WR coach we need a Santanna Moss & Reggie Wayne again. Damn I missed those days.

Herald missed out big on the Shapiro story, they won't miss another chance to bring it up.

Of course Golden would have left for Penn State if he was going to leave and he's recruiting with the expectation of scholarship reductions and maybe even a fourth bowl ban.

But sure, if Golden bails Cristobal will be a fine interim.

Jim Gallo,

eat chit and die.

great move by Golden, Mario will be a big asset to the U.

lol, anytime you can bring a Cane home and back into the fold, i like that move. More importantly, mario will be coaching the tight-ends, which means they'll be better blockers, i always thought percy pringle was one of the weak links on the staff. Also, i'm real sure and i'll be surprised if mario let's asante and dyron stay at their current weights, 270 & 275lbs for tight-ends, get real. You not gone find to many if any tight-ends over 265lbs doing work, how in the world are they suppose to get separation being junior left tackles.

The only other problem i have with this move is, the weak link is being moved over to coach the wide-outs now.

i like this ove for one reason and one reason only, the more we get more UM minded coaches in here, the better off we'll be. cristobal had F.i.u. going at bama like they were a conference team, and t.y. showed out that game too as well. If we somehow mess round and get soldinger back on staff, the party will be just about over for ollege football.

But we definitely need to get some more UM guys on that defensive coaching staff, no way is this going to be tolerated for to much longer.

The run is on for coaches that can tap into the State of South Florida! After Louisville's run and with Florida players essentially the bed rock of teams throughout the country, teams are hiring guys that can recruit South Florida. This is a wise hire that brings the triple benefit of recruiting, coaching experience and player development. If Golden fires D'Nofrio and brings in Butch Davis as DC I would kiss him in the mouth

@rboud...I think Susan, and a lot of other people for that matter, bring up the possibility of Golden leaving because he's very much an unknown commodity. He's a guy who grew up in Jersey, went to Penn State, and was a head coach at Temple. He has absolutely nothing that would have linked him to UM and its tradition and legacy. I also think you have to take into consideration that for so long, UM was as much of a feeder school for coaches as it was for players. Really, up until Coker, our HC's stayed 5-6 years and then went to the NFL.

Now, of course no of what I said means he will leave or will want to leave; I just think that because he was an "outsider" when he got hired, people are hesitant to lock him in as coach who will want to be here for 10-15 years. That said, and I have no reason to believe this other than speculation, I think if the sanctions don't appear to be crippling, I think the guy stays for a while (unless he has an NFL desire). I absolutely believe he loves UM and wants to build a legacy here.

what's really funny is now people are talking about golden leaving...this blog desperation is fun to watch...butch Davis would never work under golden....EVER...Mario was OK recruiter for FIU but not that good overall...the only top dade guy he got was QB ej hilliard (northwestern)....

Fourth bowl ban is worst case scenario Gallo, it's just one more year. Point being UM's sanctions won't make Golden leave. Sorry.

Mario did not do a good job of recruiting dade/broward at all....who did he recruit? who he did get were all 2 rated....the 2011/2012 classes were supposed to be the better of them all and FIU goes 8-5 (2011) then 3-9 (2012)....like Garcia said....FIU went backwards

I still don't see why this hire makes any sense other than the initial boost his name gives bloggers because he was from the best UM teams...

@Tampa Cane -

That cracked me up. Good hire Al!

so an ex-head coach takes a TE position job? usually the OC jedd fisch would take over and assist golden....so Mario now shares head coach authority with both dnofrio and fisch?

1. golden / hc
2. dnofrio - fisch - Mario? / assistant hc
3. dnofrio / dc

vs

standard set up

1. golden
2. fisch
3. dnofrio

is Mario secretly going to be the new DC and dnofrio dosent know it yet?...please how does this work

Welcome back!! I will no longer call him Cristobal. He will be: Crystalball, because I can see a championship in sight. GO CANES!!

CANE4LIFE

That is a damn good hire. Now we need Soldy.

The hire is a natural because as we bloggers on here always say..

Once a 'Cane, always a 'Cane.

Coach G is now surrounded by a group of ex-Hurricane players from Kehoe on down, and the Spirit of the 'Canes with the guru who built this JJ is right in the middle..

I believe Coach G has JJ's ear..and this move was widely discussed between the two.

It is a Win - Win, and Coach Cristobal endorses the 'Cane philosophy, and that is our "Brand" is legendary..Be proud of it, and build on it, Bring back the 'U'..Yes..Win, Win, Win.
Welcome home Coach C
The 'U' will be the 'U'

You guys have overlooked the very obvious, our tight ends have SUCKED. That's why he was hired. It's not so much his individual recruiting ability as it is his ties to the community and all the local coaches. He opens the door for the golden to come in to kids houses and close em down for da U. It amuses me greatly to see the gayturd fans ranting and raving on other teams blogs from their trailers in gainesville. Collecting unemployment and food stamps this must be the only other thing they have to do

I like the hire, would of loved to see Golden bring in Mark Duper as wr coach. I can see Ray Lewis coming in and helping out in the spring.
In Golden We Trust.

The f*ck are you talking about Jim Gallo, the alternative to hiring Mario Cristobal was NOT hiring Mario Cristobal.

On what planet could this possibly be a bad move for UM?

Gainesville I guess.

GREAT GREAT HIRE!! DAMN GOOD HIRE! NOT ONLY IS HE A CANE AND A GOOD COACH BUT HE WILL GET GOOD LOCAL TALENT TO STAY HOME ONCE WE WIN THE ACC NEXT YEAR(THAT RIGHT 2013 ACC CHAMPS MIAMI HURRICANES) WHETHER OUT RIGHT OR ON THE FIELD CANES WILL DOMINATE NEXT YEAR AND BEYOND. CRISTOBAL ASSURES THE PROGRAM ALREADY HAS IT'S COACH IF GOLDEN BOLTS(I DON'T THINK HE WILL BUT YOU NEVER KNOW) NOW WE NEED A FORMER CANE TO HELP THE DL AND IMPROVE THE PASS RUSH AND OVER ALL PLAY OF THE DEFENSE (FRANKLIN IS GARBAGE) WITH IMPROVEMENT ON THE DEFENSE THIS TEAM MAY PULL AN OHIO ST. MY ONLY CONCERNS ARE AT FSU, AT VT. NOTRE DAME MAY LOSE KELLY AS COACH AND NC HAS LOST BERNARD AND FSU LOSES EMANUEL, AS FAR AS THE GATORS THEY ARE GARBAGE ANYWAY AND NEVER WIN IN SOUTH FLA. GO CANES NOW I CAN SEE 11-1 OR DON'T BE SURPRISED!!!. OH AND BY THE WAY I'M FROM GAINESVILLE BUT TRUST ME THERE ARE A LOT OF CANE FANS AND GATOR HATERS!!! GO CANES

Honestly man, how dumb are you?

He's a TE coach because Kehoe has dibs on OL.

He's an assistant head coach because his real job is to recruit and wait for an ideal HC position to open up.

Best to happen in a while . We need dt's and we can win 10,11,12, beat Alabama ass. Go canes

More Breaking News!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kareem Brown just been hired as a graduated assistant. This is huge for the defensive line he had 11 sacks his senior year at UM.

Kareem Brown just been named new graduated assistant. This is huge for the defensive line. He had 11 sacks his senior year.

YES!!! ANOTHER GREAT HIRE HE CAN HELP PORTER AND PIERRE IMPROVE THERE PASS RUSH SKILLS THAT IS WHAT THIS TEAM NEEDS IS PRESSURE ON THE QB AND BROWN WAS ONE OF THOSE CANES THAT IMPROVED DURING HIS TIME HERE AND DEVELOPED INTO A BEAST RUSHING THE PASSER FROM THE MIDDLE. THE CANES HAVE NEVER WON BIG WITHOUT THAT DOMINATING DT AND I THINK PORTER CAN BE JUST THAT WITH THE RIGHT COACH. IF THIS IS TRUE ONCE AGAIN GOLDEN GETS IT. GO CANES 2013 ACC CHAMPS!!!

Great move bringing an old Cane back. Cristobal coaching TE's is actually what he did here before and he did a pretty good job with them. And Brennan Carrol is a great recruiter along with Golden, and Cristobal and others so we are shaping up to have a pretty formidable recruiting staff with lots of connections. I would like to see Dupar as a WR coach but I know that is probably not going to happen. What I don't see is how anybody could think with a rational mind that Brennen Carrol is a weak link with all his connections and how hiring Cristobal is not a good move.

Make good of it while U can Bama cause we are loading up and coming for the title.

Breaking News!!!!!!

Kareem Brown just been hired as a graduate assistant. Big help for the defensive line he had 11 sacks his senior year.

The only set back for this team is the Freaking President Donna Shalaa. How can we get rid of her. We got new uniforms, coaches, alumni players, great recruits, so nothing left but her and Mark Defino

If nothing else, bringing Kareem brown in the fold just gets me hype just because he told the nc2a to E.A.D., lol. percry pringle a.k.a. brennan carrol is one of the weak links on this coaching staff hands down, him moving over to widereceiver coach is suspect.
What tight-ends coach allows their tight-ends to be 270 & 275lbs, that's asanine. They are 20 pounds over weight.

I'm with jim gallo to an extent on cristobal helping out with the defense, i'm not sure how much he knows and can coach defense, but he definitely knows what a defense at UM is suppose to look like and he would definitely have our defense better than 117th in the nation, no matter who we line up, we should never be ranked that low.

Also, who cares about winning an acc championship, it's always going to be national championship or bust for me. Winning the acc championship means nothing to me, if you win all your games, you'll win whatever conference you're in, simple as that.

The more we had UM guys to this staff, the better off we'll be. The more guys will understand how to play like Canes are suppose to play. The one year cristobal coached the o-line, them boys were out their fighting hard all the games i saw.

I'm not so sure how much of an impact mario will have on recruiting and what area's, but he will have an impact on the mentality of the current players. Him debo'ing the tight-ends coaching spot is a good move.

I have an idea though, how bout we move oach OH-NO an percy pringle a.k.a. brennan carrol to be graduate assitants, jethro too.

Do you have another link to these new uniforms?

@ dave

see if this works
