Batter up! Opening night for Hurricanes baseball is Friday at The Light (aka Alex Rodriguez Park)

It seems as though the last official Hurricanes' baseball game at Alex Rodriguez Park's Mark Light Field was yesterday. And I know those Canes that were there for the 12-2 whuppin' by Missouri State to end the season, preceeded by a 10-2 whuppin' by Stony Brook, couldn't get back on the field fast enough to start their newest campaign.

The 2013 season begins at 7 p.m. Friday against Rutgers. The first two games of the three-game series will be available on ESPN3. In total, 15 games so far have been slated for live broadcasts.

Unfortunately for the Canes, two of their top starters are not ready to pitch yet. Eric Whaley, a 6-3, 190-pound, right-handed senior from Pompano Beach, would likely have gotten the nod for Friday. But Whaley said he has a "tight'' throwing shoulder.

"Hopefully I'll be ready in two weeks,'' Whaley said Wednesday. "I just started throwing about three days ago and it's feeling  better every day. Just rehabbing right now and taking the process slowly.''

Left-handed junior Bryan Radziewski, otherwise known as B-Rad, is coming off shoulder surgery and not recuperating quite as quickly as fellow pitcher Andrew Suarez, who also had shoulder surgery. So, B-Rad is unable to go.

That leaves left-handed sophomore Chris Diaz, out of Gulliver Prep, as the Canes' starter Friday against lefty Rob Smorol (8-4, 3.46 ERA in 2012). Diaz was mostly a middle reliever last year, with a 2-1 record and 4.18 ERA.

"I just feel blessed,'' Diaz said. "All the hard work is paying off now."

The UM rotation for Rutgers continues Saturday night with 6-4, 227-pound right-handed junior Javi Salas (6-3, 3.21). Sunday's 1 p.m. finale will have UM sophomore Suarez, a lefty, starting.

"Absolutely excited,'' Salas said. "We have a good team this year.''

Also of note: Freshman David Thompson, who also is a quarterback on the football squad, will likely start his first game as the first baseman, coach Jim Morris told me Thursday. Morris said Chris Barr won the defensive battle at first base, but a groin injury to usual right fielder Chantz Mack will likely keep Mack out defensively, so that shifted the lineup a bit.

As of Thursday, Morris said Mack might be inserted as the DH, with Barr sitting out this game if Thompson plays first. Tyler Palmer would replace Mack in right field, Morris said, if Mack doesn't play defense.

Morris told me things could still change regarding position shifts.

Morris said Alex San Juan will start at catcher.

The Canes are not in the Top-25 in any of the baseball polls, despite having the ninth best recruiting class, according to Collegiate Baseball; and the 10th best, according to ESPN.

"It's a clean slate for all of us, but we definitely have to put our name on the map again,'' Salas said.

Morris said this is one of the hardest working teams he has ever coached, and he said he's looking forward to getting back among the top. Morris will be coaching third base this season, with assistant Gino DiMare coaching first. DiMare was a smart, aggressive base runner when he played at UM, and he will likely bring that same aggressive philosophy coaching first.

     * Also on the Horizon for UM fans: Ron Fraser's Celebration of Life commemoration, honoring the UM legend who died Jan. 20. That commemoration is from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Knight Sports Complex on the UM campus. The Fraser family will be in attendance at the event, which is free and open to the public. after the celebration, fans can proceed to A-Rod Park for the 7 p.m. game against Milwaukee.

21-3
I bet doosh gallo can find something wrong with that

This team has serious ba...ls. The biggest b..als a UM squad has had since the 2001 and 2002 fb teams. This team is very disciplined. That last play they could have fouled and panic, but they didnt.

Next rank:number2

And yet no NCAA ruling...

Hey dbc, I too would like to say that you are an insightful and objective Cane who uses intellect in your posts rather than mindless drivel as such is the case with the blackpanther wanna be's such as Calvin, Gallober, and Tally whose points have no basis of reality of how a program has to be rebuilt especially in a time like this.
The fact is they know what they are doing is wrong and just like in the real world if they were on a job site they would be fired and not allowed any remedial program to get themselves in order at that age. I agree one hundred percent that many of them do not have the benefit of having a positive male role model in their lives and in many instances that causes many of the problems. That being said, they didn't just fall off the turnip truck, nor did they just get in our country and not know the rights or wrongs of the law, so I have trouble feeling bad for them. They are being allowed to attend one of the top universities in the country because of the prowess on the football field not for their intellectual capabilities or successes. So in Finnie's and Paul's case, I do hate it for them, but at the same time they knew what they were doing was wrong and then they had the audacity to attempt to resale the item back to the original owner. Now that takes some brass, but they got caught. This is just like the Alabama situation with their four players who did something along those lines. The school itself will not permit them on campus. Butch Davis did the same thing with Magic Benton and others when he was cleaning up the program following Erickson. I hope these kids get their act together but it is high time they were held accountable for their actions and stop treating them like they are fresh out of preschool and they are entitled to everything without putting something into it. I know one thing this staff, although I am not sold on Coley yet, is much better than either one of the past two regimes we were saddled with.

Want to know whats wrong with them okay here we go

DE Shayon Green - recruited as a MLB and never was any good at it so was converted to a DL. Has bought in to Golden's plan and started to excel halfway the year.

DE Anthony Chickillo - Nothing wrong with him, just needs to get stronger and should have a breakout year this year.
LB Jimmy Gaines - Better player now but not a great MLB Canes are accustomed to such as a Barrow, Lewis or Vilma.
CB Brandon McGee - Pretty good player who excelled under Golden as a shutdown corner.
S Kacy Rodgers - Okay safety but not in the mold of a Bush.
LB Tyrone Cornelius Never done alot
S AJ Highsmith - Good kid, but not a D-1 safety
S Vaughn Telemaque - Beat out by freshmen much like highsmith
DT Curtis Porter - started getting better this year and disruptive force. Could have a good year this fall if he dedicates himself because if not Moore will take his spot.
DT Luther Robinson - Finally learned that crying home wouldn't cut it in Coral Gables anymore. Started to grow up as a man.
LB Ramon Buchanan - Never lived up to the hype and two years Golden was here he was injured.
S Ray-Ray Armstrong - Great raw talent, but too stupid to realize he could be a great player. Overhyped and would have been beaten out by Bush anyway.
LB Kelvin Cain - Found out that he is not going to be babied anymore and if he wanted to be a Cane he would have to earn it. Worked his way back as a man
DT Jeffery Brown - Nothing
DB Devont'a Davis - Couldn't beat anybody out so he transferred.
LB Travis Williams - a waste of a scholarship
DB Jamal Reid - a waste of a scholarship
LB Kevin Nelson -a waste of a scholarship
DB Keion Payne- Hasn't done anything yet.

Just so U know a coach who is sending a message to his players that stupid things they may do does not fly around here anymore.

Posted by: Jim Gallo: "And let’s not forget the season opener where golden suspended 6 players....storm Johnson, kelvin Cain, seantrel Henderson, keion Payne, dryon dye and devont'a Davis.....what coach starts the season off like that?"

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Gallo, you irretrievable moron...a coach that does this is doing everything in his power not to give the NCAA even more ammunition to serve Miami the death penalty, which is precisely what they have wanted to do from the day they went public with their investigation. At NCAA President Emmert’s first press conference, without being asked, he volunteered and flatly stated that the death penalty was not off the table in the case of Miami.

Additionally, a coach who does this is one who comes into a program with no discipline in a death spiral and who had long since lost their winning culture and were living off of prior press clippings. He does this to make it clear that Miami is not just a rest stop to the NFL and these players would have to start showing pride and earn their way, which is the tradition the old Canes started. One of the first things Al Golden did was call for the old Canes to come back and be a big part of the program—this after Randy Shannon made these Cane College and NFL Hall of Famers feel unwelcome.

Oh yeah, did I mention Miami is under a brutal 800 day NCAA investigation that has damaged 3 recruiting cycles and threatens to last through a 4th year of recruiting.

5>3>2: UM played awful tonight...they almost lost the game....if they went into overtime they would have. As I have said before.....they have to get better at the free-throw line. Also tons of missed shots (you obviously didnt see the game)....even though clemson is excellent at home....UM should have beaten them at least by the 7 point line.....

UM escaped tonight and Jim L. knows it.

I think golden has done a fine job in recruiting under the circumstance however our dc sending our dlineman to cover quick outs is not the smartest idea. Our dc has not adapted well and that is the most disturbing thing about our program. How can you give us the death penalty when you corrupted the investigation? Stop making excuses for this twit. We should go 11-1 at the least next season. We don't know what our oc will do next year but I have no confidence in our dc. If you think having a garbage dc and a defense ranked three places from the bottom will win us a championship then you have lost your mind. We recruited well on the offensive side of the ball but defensively we didn't get all that we should have. Stop sending messages to real cane fans and send a message to our dumb a@@ dc you keyboard coward.

Miami di play poorly- shot poorly and they need toget their free throws squared away. But they hung in there. Clemson is not horrible. Esp at home. Defense won this game. A W is a W. Recall back in 2001 when UM beat BC in an ugly game that took them tothe ship when Ed Reed took an int form a D-line man and ran it back with no time left. Ugly win by a superb team. A W nonetheless.Or the W the next year when McGahee took over the game against VT when at the end VT nearly tied it.

I dont believe in the concept of ugly wins. This team is 12-0 in the ACC. Its tough to sustain this.

tallyCane, say it again man, any d-co sending the best interior d-linemen(in curtis porter)out to try cover backs in the flats when you already teaching a technique that doesn't get an instant pass rush is lain stupid. i can see if we're in the redzone wwhen the field shrinks down and maybe that would stop a quick slant pass over the middle, but to see curtis postr being asked to cover a runningback in the flats with a wide-open field is just plain stupid, no way around that.

Asking shayon(2 serious knee operations)green to cover chris thompson in the flats down field is just plain stupid, no way around that. To me it's almost on par with calling designed running plays for qb's on their side of the field, that's what you got runningbacks for. But i guess once he's a 10th year senior he'll be able to do it, or once he gets bigger and stronger in the weight room he'll be able to do it.

This is why the first time i saw Alquadin Muhammad highlight video and saw him going down field and making a 1 handed interception i said man, this is going to be a problem because i'm sure that's the part of the highlight video that got oach OH-NO the most excited which is a real problem. That's what you got db's and linebackers for.

All that is very unecessary to shut down another teams offense. I you got a defensive end that can drop and run down field with a tight-end that's one thing, but against backs, that's just plain stupidty.

Anybody that has faith in a guy making calls like that are being stupid. The other real and sad part about it is, none of the times he called it, has it been successfull or has it given us an advantage so what's the purpose of that call, sheer stupidity.

facts: no brutal investigation at all.....nothing has even been handed down....your an diot if you think shannon turned away old canes...he is an "old" cane and the one who gave out the money from the "hit" pool from luther, allegedly, lol....

you are green pea class 2016....you have no idea who the old canes were or about...

this defense under stoops. diaco or kirby smart would not be #117, I'll say they would be top 10...shannon did a very good job handing over to golden both offense and defense....no ncaa team woul complain like you and the rest about how bad these guys were...all BS

not to mention paul and finnie ...if you cant make it with these guys you just plain s....k

247sports.com reported over an hour ago that Alabama has offered Mario Cristobal their Offensive Line coaching job. Nothing on the Miami Herald or Sun-Sentinel yet. Usually the Sentinel is right on top of this stuff.

the facts are that the majority of players on this team are all shannon recruits....the only golden starters are - eric flowers, denzel perryman, gionni paul, ladarius gunter, rayshawn jenkins, olsen pierre, herb waters and thurston armbrister

plus 3 of randy shannons kids and 1 goldens were named in the all-acc team - OL Seantrel Henderson, OL Brandon Linder, OL Jonathan Feliciano and LB Denzel Perryman.

golden and dnofrio are failures....no matter wat anyone says....they have accomplished nothing here at all.....golden did not win coastal division.....he forfeited it, therefore you didnt win it..GT won it

The only keyboard cowards on here are U and those other two idiots to start off with. 2nd the defense was comprised of mostly freshmen and sophomores last year so it didn't surprise me that the defense was as it was last year, but they improved throughout the year and by his trackrecord the defense will be much improved this coming year, so that doesn't worry me. The only part that concerns me is the offensive side of the ball and Coley. I know fisher worked with the QB's at FSU and really all I have to go on is the progression of E.J Manual which to me was not impressive but it could have been Manual so I am gonna keep an open mind until proven different.

mario will take it and he should.....he deserve more than being a lowly position coach with no pay, authority or status.....that is too much for a westchester/columbus/cubano....

golden should have known this when he hired him....it is common sense...a CEO dosent accept a sales manager position unless he was to get a paycheck and hang his hat until the right position opens up....in the end mario is committed to mario as with any of us....

your an idiot championships:

first of all ej manuel's mother had breast cancer and fighting for he life all of 2012...the guys has tremendous arm strenght like mrris and can throw the deep ball....he is a NFL type QB...plus his stats are good

ej manuel - 3707 total yards / 264.79 yards per game / 27 TD's

stephen morris - 345 total yards / 284.58 yards per game / 22 TD's

I am not worried about coley....golden/dnofrio yes....get butch all is well in cane land....

If mario goes to bama, it's clear not only is the nc2a going to do all it can to keep us from rising but a sec school trying to lure mario away doesn't surprise me, they see what type of staff is being put together and when you round up a True Miami staff, a championship is not to far behind it. bama trying to pluck mario is a good move for bama and the sec, now it'll be up to goldie to try and go to the administration to see if they can up the anty on mario's deal in order to keep em, because if any of these guys, brennan, jethro, p.w. or oach OH-NO are making more than mario, it'll be hard to keep that man here.

Plus mario is use to making a certain amount, bama will make a real offer that's hard to refuse. Going to be interesting if it's money or loyalty/gratitude for an opportunity that became available before this new one. If mario walks, the money was talking. For instance, as the tight-ends/assitant/auxillary(whatever that means)head coach, is he making more to do that or would he make more being bama's o-line coach, something mario Truly loves to do.

If he's going to make anywhere from 200k more on up, lol, that'll be hard for him to stick around, but what he could do is coach here and if goldie is let go, mario would be the obivous hire although this wishy washy administration has been jacking up since that troll got here.

calvin thats not it....its an ego thing....mario truely believes he could he UM's head coach...this is too much of a knockdown no matter how much his wife or him love the community....him have less authority than dnofrio after being a head coach of a rival school and a honored alumni? no wayyyyyyy

I always knew this and questioned it right from the beginning...the hire never made any sense...

If Mario takes the job he shall be forever banned from walking onto the hallowed fields of the U. Eff him. Alabama's run will end this year (2013). They will not win another ship for a long time. I guarantee it- just like previouosly 1992-2009. 17 years. Longer than Miami has had to wait. believe me. Mario can go to ----.

Nick Sa-an has over recruited rbs to try to keep them away from opponent programs. That is a fact- kids dont realize theyre being screwed. What does he care.

Calvin- you had some valid points- for a change.

Gallo- You are still a stupid doosh. No change.

And still no word form the NCAA. Wonder what is happening behind closed doors!

UM #2. LOL.

so mario drives to UM....whats does he do all day? he dosent draw up offensive or defensive schemes...ok mario, go over there and coach the TE's, lol....mario can you get us some coffee? mario how are those TE's doing......mario when you get a chance...my wifes dry cleaning will be ready at 3:00, can you run out there?

mario there is a kid at northwestern I'd like you to look at....can you put a performance summary on the kid and have it ready on my desk by the morning? Mario I have to leave early to attend a gala at the Biltmore, sorry HC's only.....make sure all the lights are turned off when you leave.....lol

calvin thats not it....its an ego thing....mario truely believes he could he UM's head coach...this is too much of a knockdown no matter how much his wife or him love the community....him have less authority than dnofrio after being a head coach of a rival school and a honored alumni? no wayyyyyyy

You always said it man, it never made sense to me either, even goldie didn't know himself when he said he'll be helping him with some "auxillary or ancillary things" i'm thinking he said ancillary, which is a worst word to use than auxillary, and if so, i can see mario rolling out. loyalty don't always get you paid at the bank, in fact mario learned a real hard lesson about what loyalty means in the coaching job force, he stayed loyal and lost money, unless UM can somehow convince mario that if UM wins the national championship mario would be given a 1 million dollar bonus, i can't see that man staying.

Not only is bama trying to create a path to Miami highschool, if mario goes, you can say they've created a pipe-line of UM o-line coaches to bama as well.

I can't wait til ray lewis gets here and see's that efense run by oach OH-NO up close and personal for himself, he's not going to understand it one bit himself.

There is absolutely NOTHING, ZIP, NADA, ZILCH about bama offering Mario Cristobal the OC position on ESPN blogs or ESPN.com. Care to post the link?

There is mention that at 2 pm there will be a news conf by the NCAA regarding their internal investigation on their fradulent handling of the Miami case. The VP was fired today.

"The one thing he brings right off the bat is head coaching experience," Golden said before making the point that offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch will still oversee the offense and make play calls. "Mario is somebody I can count on for some of the ancillary head coaching things and see the big picture a little bit better. His expertise as a tight end coach; o-line coach; a guy that has coached many positions and cultivated talent and recruited talent in this are was too good a package to pass up." GREAT COME HERE BUT YOU AINT HAVING NO SAY-SO

"We're kind of kindred spirits," Golden said. We both took over programs that were absolutely abysmal and kind of turned them around. We have mutual respect from the outside..." WHAT COMPLETE BS...#117 IS ABYSMAL...THAT GUY HAS ALOT OF BALLS

There's a curse and blessing about recruiting in South Florida. The blessing is a lot of the high-end talent is here. The curse is that a lot of guys don't decide until late because they are so highly sought after... You got to be patient and we've done that I believe. I think we've demonstrated to a lot of young men that we're willing to wait for them. We're committed to them and their high school coaches. I think we're going to finish strong here." BUT DOSENT PERTAIN TO DENVER KIRKLAND...DOES HE EVER STOP LYING? HE IS SO FULL OF S...T.

Gallober, it U who is the idiot. That had nothing to do with the guys progression. He is a Jamarcus Russell clone, who has all the tools except for th emost improtant tool which is between the ears. Morris is a far better QB than manual in every facet of the game. Th one thing I do like about Coley is he does emphasis the power running game, even if it is out of the spread alot of the time. He will have better recievers than FSU had because all of their recievers are like yours and a couple others predictions in which they look a certain way on paper. Paper doesn't do anything other than give you an idea of what should happen. It's going to be interesting to see the offense, however the defense really isn't a concern because I know for a fact it is going to be much better.

Wonder if Ms. Lach who got canned by the NCAA agrees with Gallo that there was nothing to this saga.

ROFL, dawg, i thought it was just me(and a few friends of mind, nash, esteban, Uchamps, bg and a few others) who keep having to point things out about this new regime. goldie talks as if people don't put stuff in print no more or something. This ain't 1812 it's 2012 where your words if not consistent will comeback to expose you.

When luke said "goldie did the exact opposite, that's a liar to me" this is exactly what he's talking about.
To many people that claim to be UM fans want to keep dismissing the disrespect goldie keeps handing out when it comes to the players down here. He's in the wrong state for that. How can goldie justify matthew thomas being a more high priority recruit over denver kirkland when they both had a boat load of scharlorships. Many will say we needed a defensive recruit over an offensive one, but that's not the point, his own words are clear and that's exactly what he's suppose to be doing if not, than don't try and hold ray ray armstrong accountable and than kick him off the team as they said "for lying".

goldie is being real disrespectful right now whether knowningly or unknowingly to the Miami community, other coaches and the players that he has kicked off the team and the suspended ones, you don't have to be nowhere for 2 years to understand that the precedence of those schalorships belong to the home team. No matter what inside info james coley came down here with, that whole denver kirkland thing shouldn't have transpired the way it did and created more "tmz since he got here" turmoil. Especially coming from a 7 & 6 squad, he must want to go 4 & 7. goldie better realize he's on about 2 moe L's in the lost column from being on the next thing smoking up outta here, keep playing.

Hey Folks...wise-up...Gallo is the Curse...he is now playing the--I'm a Miami Hurricane fan--act to pass along his hate.

This mentally ill re-fried tuuurd has been doing this for years and this is his latest alias.

"Did not violate a specific bylaw or law."

opps right again....green peas are no match for the swammy, lol...all good fun

LOL, only Calvin rates Kirkland above thomas. Get real. Kirkland is just a big body.

It is blatantly obvious by Emmert's words- that the NCAA (if not including Emmert as well) has a major beef with Miami, hates Miami, wants to bury Miami at all costs. The NCAA- composed of Lilly white suits from Nebraska, the south the midwest despises the inner city culture that the U developed and from where many of its superb athletes came from. Its blackness sort of speak. It smacks of racism and this was the ammunition they needed. Look at Emmert- he looks like a wooden little puppet.

I hope UM lawyers are locked and loaded. Thislatest NCAA "apology" is garbage. The whole investigation is poisoned and fraudulent- how does anyone know that one piece of imformation obtained poorly doesn't taint other pieces of information?

If UM BOT and administration doesn't fight this locked and loaded I will be severely dissapointed. And it will give evryone the idea that they could give a damned about UM athletics. And the community at large.

Get ready to get disappointed, pal. NCAA is still coming for the u and you can listen to me Mon-Fri on 640AM 6:00am to 10:30AM

there is nothing to this saga....all that happened in the end was the ncaa latching on to someone elses subpeona....getting real truthful testomony under oath that nomally would be a pack of lies if done under (non-subpena) questioning by ncaa.....

"Paid insufficient attention to the concern that engaging the criminal defense attorney could constitute an inappropriate manipulation of the bankruptcy process"

.....this is not correct since there was no objection during the court process during any of the lines of questioning by either the judge, plaintiff or defendant...notice the word "could" but it didnt...whatever information that was provided by allen is an overlap of what the ncaa already knew...

all about nothing....

"There's a curse and blessing about recruiting in South Florida. I think we're going to finish strong here." GOLDEN

"The same month, Golden rescinded a scholarship offer to Booker T. Washington offensive lineman Denver Kirkland, which came as a shock. Back in March, during a high school coaches' convention in Orlando, I was in the room when Golden and his staff told the coaches at Miami Central, Carol City, Booker T., Norland, and Northwestern, that he would never pull a scholarship offer he made to a student-athlete" LUTHER

So who's telling the truth? golden or luther

Here's the link to that article from 11am this morning. It's been updated to reflect that Mario has indeed accepted the position at Alabama. I don't know why ESPN, the Miami Herald or Sun-Sentinel aren't breaking this story before Inside The U. Everybody should just join www.miami.247sports.com since they seem to break every story about 4 hours before everybody else.

lol, yeah, ray ray the sacrificial lamb. They silently tried to tell ray ray to either choose football or choose his girlfriend, since he chose his girlfriend they got rid of him. Part of the reason it's been "tmz since he got here" is because we got a female trying to be the president and goldie continuing to make "self inflicted" wounds when he doesn't have too.

Somebody obviously made the decision to try and play the "go along to get along" with the nc2a redneck type
and start the "let's be honest process" like that was going to work, if all the other players did what aldarius johnson did and kept quiet about it, who were they going to get rid of.
