Blake James sheds interim title, hired as full-time athletic director at Miami

The University of Miami announced Friday that Blake James has shed his title as interim athletic director and been hired for the position full-time. James had been serving as the interim AD since October 2012.

“Blake James has proven that he has the experience, skills, leadership and especially the love for the University that we need in Athletics,” University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala said in a statement released by the school.

James came to UM three years ago as Senior Associate AD after spending seven years the University of Maine, where he served as Senior Associate Athletic Director before serving as Director of Athletics from July 2005 to September 2010. In that role, his primary responsibilities focused on marketing, ticketing, retail operations and athletics development, along with men's and women's track and field, cross country, men's soccer, men's basketball and baseball.

“I’m honored to be named the Director of Athletics here at the University of Miami,” James said. “I want to thank President Shalala and the Board of Trustees for the opportunity as we continue to move forward through these difficult times. We have assembled a great athletics staff with tremendous head coaches and I am grateful to be a Miami Hurricane.”

During his tenure at Maine, athletics experienced tremendous success, including three trips to the Frozen Four for the men's ice hockey program and NCAA playoff berths for football, baseball (two), women's basketball and softball. Additionally, James implemented a comprehensive $17 million facility improvement plan, which included an indoor practice facility and numerous other facility upgrades and renovations. Academically, the program flourished, earning the conference academic cup twice and maintaining better than a 3.0 GPA.

Prior to his stint at James worked in athletics development at Providence College, where he established the "Friars Forever" campaign and the Friar Athletic Fund.

No stranger to South Florida, James began his athletic career with UM, working in ticket sales, corporate sales and athletics development while a graduate student at St. Thomas University.

He graduated from Minnesota State University-Mankato with a bachelor's degree in marketing in 1992 and received his master's degree from St. Thomas University in 1994. He and his wife Kelly have two children, Haley and Ryan.

Lol, we just need a warm body at this point, Blake you'll do

First....

GALLO, VEGAS DID PICK UP 25-1 TO PLAY FOR THE NC THIS YR. Why dont u go put down $100 bucks.

First order of business better be to lock up Golden LONG TERM!!

HE DESERVES RECRUITER OF THE YEAR AWARD!!

2012 Top 2 recruits (according to ESPN)
Tracy Howard ranking 83
Randy Johnson ranking 82

2013 Top Recruits
Stacy Coley ranking 87
Al_Quadin Muhammad ranking 85
Artie Burns ranking 85
Kevin Olsen ranking 84
Standish Dobard ranking 83
Jermaine Grace ranking 83
Beau Sandland ranking 83
Jamal Carter ranking 82

If just 3 of these kids have near the HEART that Duke has and love for the Canes that that kid has, we are back in the NC game within 2 years. Great job coach recruiting this batch with all the NCAA Bull!@#$ going on!!

it might workout....I have no poblem with blake...U neds stabilit at AD....lets see how much time he gives golden....

What did Golden do to you Gallo?

Did he run over your cat?

Golden didn't do anything. Gallo is a Gator troll. If Vince Lombardi were resurrected and coaching the Canes he would be equally critical and would probably make fun of his hat.

I like how when randy shannon was here, people said he couldn't recruit, now that he's in Arkansas, all of a sudden now, it's shannon's fault denver kirkland and alex collins are their, lol, these hypocrites are comical.

Of course shannon recruited better than goldie because shannon is from here. goldie has admitted that he's only been here for 2 years so he's learning the area, which means he did't intentionally make certain mis-steps in recruiting but he understands his mistakes. Like i said several times, i like goldie, we just gotta raise em. He's an outsider, until he becomes a part of a national championship team at Miami, that's the only way he'll be initiated.

Growing pains, he has his way of thinking and in Miami we have our way, the difference is, goldie has to understand he's dealing with a bunch of championship mind-sets in Miami. To many guys down here know how to win championships locally and nationally.

goldie needs to understand better how to deal with strong minded kids as well. People keep thinking we got alot of depth at the linebacker spots, but no telling if eddie johnson will be back and gionni paul is already gone. If you were ranked 117th while they were here, it's almost comical to think what we'll be ranked without them.

The only time i seem to start seeing a comment from clown 117th is when it comes to pointing out behaviours he don't agree with. If he started pointing out to the players what offenses are about to do as good/easy as he points out the growing process of players, maybe we wouldn't be 117th.

Come next year, i can already here the non-sense coming if/once the defense looks the same, well, thomas finnie is no longer with us, he would've be a junior back their, 2 of our starting linebackers with the most game experience are no longer with the team, etc. etc.

This is why offering a linebacker from Virginia over skai moore makes no sense at all.

He did nothing....I just think UM s in dire shape....I am afraid for its future....golden/dnofrio can not bring UM back....I truely dont believe it...

butch davis is a winner....he knows how to work UM...he is availible....everyone is bailing at UM...we are in trouble...locals dont want to come here....this has nothing to do with sanctions.....

golden is too young with not enought experiance....UM has to rebrand themselve like the old days....this direction is not gonna work, we will just plain disappear

I can't believe the stupid comments that I read here day after day. It's amazing how many that post here have no clue, from the ones that say Golden is no good to the ones that think we are winning an NC in the next few years. Golden is a book yet to be written and as far as Championships of any kind lets start with winning the Coastal straight up this year and go from there,

watching espn on nsd...you see sec taking completely over the ncaa....you get a sinking feeling that UM can never catch these guys....we are slowly sinking and UM football an can go under.....

management has to change....golden/dnofio have to be fired....I know butch davis would come here...id rather put my faith in him.....he will bring in a better DC than we have now...that will at least support the offense which is not bad at all....but time is wasting.....

We should have gone harder after the kids from U niversity school as well as some other local kids that were 3 stars, Why go after 3 stars from out of state when we have plenty of talent here and we can start planting the seeds for future classes . I thought the influence of Coley and Mario was going to help us lock up some local talent. These guys get a pass this year due to the sanctions and the short time that they have been here. But if they don't rack up next year then AG must go.
By the way Skai Moore would have been a hell of a SS or LB for us.

Why hasnt herald mention that

Was hired away from the Canes?

Does this mean Al Golden hires back Don Soldinger for running backs coach? A no Brainer

Go Canes

Congrats Mr. James now figure out a way to give Coach Larranaga a greater recruiting budget to keep the storm surge rolling.

Gallo, I get the sinking feeling that you love the KAK.

Great job Golden, did as well as could be expected. People here criticizing should leave this blog at once, or explain why they spend all day here spewing negativity. Great job not going after any more Dade County players this year, after top 3(we got 2) there wasn't anyone worthy, including DK since we are 2 deep at the OL and brought in 3 more who are better than him.

BREAKING NEWS!!!

Bleacher report 1/28/2012

It’s too early to tell whether Will Muschamp will last in Gainesville. However, these past two seasons have been proven he is unstable and can't stop the parade of criminal arrests that have plagued the Gators for many years, and the Gators may decide to switch coaches yet again.

Finding the perfect coach is never easy. Miami has struck gold with the hiring of the best young coach in the country, Al Golden who qualified the young Canes for the ACC Championship game. Alabama was able to lure Nick Saban away from the pros. Texas A&M found Kevin Sumlin, a coach who took Houston to the verge of a BCS bowl game.

When Florida decides to part ways with Muschamp, it should try to find a coach with a record of consistency and sustainable, long-term success.

What do Urban Liar, Billy Donovan, Bernie Machen, Matt Patchan and Brock Berlin all have in common?

They all quit on the Gatr Trash.

BWWHAHAHAHAHAAHHAH

Jim Gallo may not be able to post coherently today.

Please excuse him, but he is suffering the after effects of anesthesia to repair his analprolapse.

Here's hoping you can have a normal bowel movement soon, Jim Gallo.

Footballfan,

It is my passionate hope that you are Gallo employing a new alias as it is very depressing to think that there are 2 irretrievably stupid and unconditionally clueless people posting on the very same blog.

If your rambling diatribe was an effort to attack Miami and bolster Arkansas, then your agriculture school needs to add a course in logical thinking as you spectacularly failed to achieve your mission, which I am sure is a reoccurring theme in your life.

PS: Dude??? Allow me to let you in on a secret…when you start off with the word “Dude” your blathering is then viewed to be especially worthless, if it is even possible to think any less of what you have to say!

Gallo still constipated, Calvin..one question, If a tree falls in the forest.....lol

Stop saying we.. Just go away

Gallo, no I was not an extra in "Trading Places", which might be the worst correlation in history--that is only outpaced by your stunted intellect.

If you could read and then comprehend you would know that my post stated a fact concerning the mother hiring an attorney that is incontrovertible evidence this story is NOT over. Of course, that could change at any moment should the mother elect not to go forward with litigation.

I went on to point out that if Arkansas and/or Alex’s high school football coach played a underhanded role in advising and encouraging the kid to go around his mother this will not sit well with the NCAA as this would be an attempt to circumvent their rules. This is not to say the NCAA has the power to do anything, but as Miami has learned—once you have garnered the attention of the NCAA nothing good will come out of that.

Again, if you could read and comprehend you would know that I have on numerous occasions stated that Alex should attend Arkansas if that’s where his heart is at. I’ve also compared this story to the Jacoby Brisett disaster that I believe parallels this situation and in my opinion, and calling on my life experiences, points to a similar outcome being a distinct possibility as mothers do know best.

No one, especially those with less than a pure agenda, should come between a caring and well intentioned mother and her child. This is 100% a family matter…period!

Unless Gallo is a blood relative of Alex Collins or is his mother and intimately involved in this matter he has no way of knowing where this is headed or will eventually end.

CAlvin- You are the hypocrite.

Be a man, Stand up and state the facts- You hate whitey

oops.....

All of those stats Gallober and we are still in much better shape with Golden as opposed to Shannon, so with that said keep reaching. U forgot the most important stat, ACC Coastal Champion, 2012 under Al Golden.

let me clue you in idiot boy.....nobdy cares about the ACC costal chanpionship....its an embarassment...

btw GT won the coastal..

GT 7-7
VT 7-6
duke 6-7
virginia 4-8

wow...thats impressive

Gallo,

Nice use of "selective amnesia"....

1) Butch Davis left UM under bad circumstances. He lied to the school and team and bolted. I loved the guy, but he burned his bridge when he left. His doing.

2) The word is he was very involved with the NCAA violations at NC State and got away clean. With the NCAA all over Miami, how/why would we ever consider him at this point?

3) Have you noticed NO OTHER COLLEGE TEAM has hired Butch, even as assistant coahc? Suppose you think the 130+ other schools are also full of idiots too...

Yes, in your mind, you are the smartest, winningest football mind that exists. If everyone would just listen and believe you.

Why don't you get off the computer and go volunteer for pee-wee football league and work your way up to college. Then we'll all get to watch you win 5 National Championships in a row or sumthin....
