Larry Scott hired to be Canes new tight ends coach

Former USF assistant Larry Scott has accepted the job to become UM's new tight ends coach. Scott will replace Mario Cristobal's spot on the staff. Cristobal left UM for Alabama last week after just a month on the job.

The news was first reported by The Associated Press.

Scott, who was part of the first recruiting class at USF in 1996, has plenty of experience recruiting in South Florida. He was a big part of USF's highly-touted 2009 signing class. He served as tight ends coach at USF for four seasons, offensive lien coach in 2010 and most recently running backs coach in 2012.

Here is Scott's bio:

Larry ScottA member of USF's original recruiting class in February 1996, Larry Scott returned to USF in 2005 as director of high school operations, before first moving into coaching as a graduate assistant in 2006 and later as the tight ends coach, a position he accepted on Jan. 23, 2007.

Scott coached the tight ends in 2008 before switching to the offensive line in 2009. Scott returned to the tight ends in his sixth year with the program in 2010 and took over as running backs coach in 2012.

In his return to the tight end position, Scott and his group helped USF to its fifth-straight eight-win season, making it one of only 15 programs nationally and one of just 10 in BCS leagues that had accomplished the feat.

The offense saw tremendous improvement in 2011 as USF improved its national ranking in total offense 75 spots from 2010 to 2011, the largest jump of any school in the country. The most dramatic improvement came in the passing game, where USF improved by 85 yards per game. Only two teams saw a greater jump in the passing offense national rankings, as the Bulls improved 59 spots. In addition, the Bulls finished first in the BIG EAST in rushing and sacks allowed.

As the offensive line coach, Scott helped mentor center Sampson Genus to a second-team All-BIG EAST honor in 2009 as voted on by the coaches. Florida State defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews called Genus the best center they had seen all season.

In addition, redshirt freshman tackle Mark Popek was named Freshman All-America by both Sporting News and ESPN, while guard Zach Hermann earned third-team honors by Phil Steele.

A unit that had to replace a lot of experience lost from the 2008 team, the 2009 offensive line turned out to be one of the team's strengths after facing question marks across the line coming into fall practice.

In his first full season, USF saw the development of Cedric Hill into one of the most feared tight ends in the BIG EAST. He continued to help the offense and his position group excel in 2008. Hill earned second-team All-BIG EAST honors, while Ben Busbee stepped into a prominent role alongside Hill.

Where Scott has made arguably the biggest impact on USF is in recruiting. His work in Miami and throughout Dade and Broward counties has helped USF reel in a string of highly-regarded classes. In fact, many considered the 2008 class among the best in program history. Then, Scott and the entire coaching staff went out and signed a 2009 class that was ranked as high as No. 21 nationally and was praised again as the best in program history.

Scott first started coaching at Wharton High in Tampa, where he was offensive line coach and run game coordinator from May 2001 to August 2001, when he moved to Freedom High as offensive coordinator and line coach from August 2001 to November 2003.

During the 2004-05 school year, he returned to his high school alma mater - Sebring - where he was an exceptional education teacher and the co-offensive coordinator.

Scott was a three-year letterman (1997-99) as an offensive tackle for the Bulls and a member of the first recruiting class that began practicing in 1996, the year before the first USF football game. Scott arrived at USF after a successful three-sport career at Sebring High School. He was a four-year letterwinner for the football team, playing on Sebring's offensive line, and also earned a pair of varsity letters in baseball his freshman and sophomore years and in wrestling his junior and senior seasons.

Scott and his wife, Shakiera, have three children, sons Larry and Jalen and daughter Jurnee. Scott was born in Sebring, Fla.

Good to see the old race baitor Calvin at it again. You sir should spend less time hating and see reality.
Good job Glenn!!!!! Nice , accurate comment.

The owner of the Oakland Raiders, Al Davis (Bless his Soul) said it all:

"JUST WIN!!!!!!!!!!!! BABY."

Black, white, purple, or green...Coaches see only one letter on the faces of their players and that is "W" win.

EVERY COACH WHO LEADS A TEAM WANTS TO WIN...I DON'T CARE WHO, AND WHAT YOU ARE COACHING . WHEN YOUR NUMBER IS CALLED BE READY TO GO IN AND DOMINATE.
.
Color is B****** in football..if you are good we love you. Emmitt Smith, Larry Csonka, Sweetness..Bob Griese.
If you are not a player, OUT you go Black, white blue, purple, green...
That's it folks. get a life and check on reality..It's all about WINNING.
Go 'Canes

Didn't mean that any of the three white kids were any good, just making a point that you could easily claim Randy was racist or at least didn't "understand" young white men.

Posted by: Glenn | February 25, 2013 at 10:23 AM

NO YOU CAN'T! "easily claim" that RS was racist.
How did He not understand the young white men, when He sat in their living rooms and recruited em', doesn't make any sense.
What I'm saying is...you don't know RS, neither do I. You have to peel a lot of layers before you put the racist label on somebody, even to insinuate it like YOU! did.

C'mon Calvin. Sam Shields didn't do anything until he got to the NFL. He gave us very little here and it wasn't until he got to the NFL that he developed. Shannon didn't develop anyone. Those players you list that were drafted are mostly depth players at the NFL level. We used to put that many players in the first round...and you are trying to highlight depth players?!?!? LMAO. Hey, he got a lot of production out of Jimmy Graham though, didn't he???

I don't blame it all on Shannon. It started with Coker. Once Butch's recruits were out of the program, we have been mediocre.

///////////////////////////////

raz, you seem like an independent thinker, which is why you have to look at the facts about shannon. When shannon took over, besides kenny phillips being drafted in the 1st round in 2007, from 2008 to 2009 their was only 1 player that got drafted and that was back-up spendcer adkins. You laughing saying the players that got drafted under shannon were depth players. All we're saying is, shannon was the one who started bringing the talent base back up and players started getting drafted again. In fact UM was tied or had the most draft picks in one year under shannon.

Yeah we know they weren't 1st rounders, but shannon got up to having a 2nd rounder in brandon harrris. So he was bringing the talent base back up.

Don't fall for that "our weight room numbers was lousy, and the 225 bench press" analysis, just ask yourself this, which teams played better defense those "so called" out-of-shape shannon teams or these so called" in shape goldie teams.

Next, goldie got left with way more draftable talent than what shannon got left with, so the foundation was already set for coach goldie to excel, instead we regressed. You say sam shields did nothing while he was here, lol, the man was in his 1st year as a db and held his own, he only got torched in about 2 games, the Oklahoma game and the pitt game, other than that, shields played strong for a db in his first year, you gotta give credit where credit is due. Of course he got better in the nfl, for one, it was money time which made him take it way more serious.

When shannon first tried to get shields to switch he fought it, his heart wasn't all the way in it. Under goldie, shields would've been a player thrown by the wayside to the wolves somewhere.

Even when butch recruits were gone, shannon's unit was the only unit that was still a top 8 defense with no offensive support. People want to blindly bash that man like he was a detriment to UM when in fact he was the exact opposite.

All we're saying is, how is that goldie has been a 5 year headcoach somewhere else prior to coming here, was left with alot of talent and is still on 2 games better than shannon was playing a weaker schedule than shannon did in his 1st 2 years, that's not a good sign no matter what the weight room numbers say, 117th in defense, at that rate they might as well not lift weights or practice, you don't have to practice to be 117th in the nation, that's wasting time.

Those people who want to start talking about reverse racism and racism being in other cultures are just tring to divert the issue. lovie smith was fired because of racism, @ 10 & 6, lol, how long was jeff fischer the coach of the titans before he got fired or how long was andy reid in philadelphia before he got fired.

You just don't see 10 & 6 coaches getting fired, the one exception is marty schottheimer with san diego but that was due to other reasons, he went 14 & 2 and lost in the playoffs, got into it with the ownership and management and they let him go.

racism doesn't allow people to give a man the benefit of the doubt or the proper time. For instance, if shannon came back and was the d-co and at anytime he was coaching and our defense was 117th in the country, the venom would start spewing, alot of these same posters here would have a whole lot to say.

Not only was the defense garbage in 2011, but 2012 it got worst, so the "youth excuse" is being used, even though it's real obvious the scheme is flawed, when you asking d-tackles to come out and cover backs in the flats, at the 50 yardline, not redzone, at what point will that ever make sense, but oach OH-NO has young players, so once those d-tackles become 20 year seniors, they'll be able to cover the runningbacks in the flats.

Or what year does shayong green need to be in to be able to cover runningbacks downfield, it's a stupid scheme, the linebackers being asked to line-up on the inside hash mark, but are some how suppose to be able to cover the slot receiver running a 10 yard out route, has nothing to do with youth, these guys are in the wrong alignments pre-snap and goldie and oach OH-NO are standing looking which lets you know that's where they want their players to be.

In the game against Viriginia in 2011, jimmy gaines is in press man against a runningback, goldie nor oach OH-NO called a timeout when you barely let your db's be in press-man, next thing you know, gaines gets cooked and all we here after the game is ray ray was in the wrong spot, lol, come on, that play was doomed from the start.

Out of shape shannon defenses:

2001 – 6th
2002 – 7th
2003 – 2nd
2004 – 28th
2005 – 4th
2006 – 7th

2010 - Out of shape shannon defense:

total defense - 4203 yards / 37 sacks for 241 yrd loss / 16 INT's - #22 rank

2011 - In shape golden defense:

total defense - 4319 yards / 23 sacks for 118 yrd loss / 6 INT's - #45 ranked

2012 - In better shape golden defense: 2yrs to train

total defense - 5837 yards / 13 sacks for 86 yrd loss / 11 INT's - #116 ranked

What tripped me out about the D last season, was the KSU game. KSU went 5 wide, and D'Onofrio actually depleted the box, as if Klein was some type of passing prodigy or something. Same thing with the BC game, it took being down 14-0 before He realized what BC was doing. Look, I'ma give Coach D the BOTD, but that Pop Warner scheme needs to be trashed.

Y'all Cane bUbba's UNDERESTIMATE Miami's fine, outstanding D-coordinator. And that includes that Calvin, too!

Seriously y'all Hurricane rUffians. Because dig this. Goldie's squad will win with his DECADES-long term Good Ol' Boy buddy on the Miami sidelines.

However, those winning seasons will be of the 8-4 variety. With an OCCSIONAL 9-3 winning campaign in Coral Gables. I may add. Eh. What say.

In other words y'all Miami brUtes. As long as D'Onofrio is calling the PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE, LAME ARSE, SOFT defensive schemes. The Hurricane WILL NOT return to Top 10 elite-status. Let alone Top 15/16 status. Bloody well gurantee it!!

Bon jour et Bon soir

And that canespace/EOTH Cane CLAN is still in the dark bout' that D'Onofrio. Sure nough' baby

Um basketball just got #5....got hurt this week in the polls....if they go out west they have gonzaga, ohio state, arizona..would have liked them in the east....that loss hurt UM.....maybe florida if UM can beat gonzaga....that is huge odrer to fill....well see this week...

It's so nice to see the two morons, UN Secretary General Calvin and Jim Gallo Esquire at it again....not really.

Gallo, you imbecile. I don't suppose your still trolling about here with your suggestion that UM does not have an argument in regards to the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act? If so, you might want to read the definitions prior to the actual statute so you understand it. In particular, read definitions 3(c) and 9.

501.203 Definitions.--As used in this chapter, unless the context otherwise requires, the term:
(1) "Final judgment" means a judgment, including any supporting opinion, that determines the
rights of the parties and concerning which appellate remedies have been exhausted or the time
for appeal has expired.
(2) "Enforcing authority" means the office of the state attorney if a violation of this part occurs
in or affects the judicial circuit under the office's jurisdiction. "Enforcing authority" means the
Department of Legal Affairs if the violation occurs in or affects more than one judicial circuit or
if the office of the state attorney defers to the department in writing, or fails to act upon a
violation within 90 days after a written complaint has been filed with the state attorney.
(3) "Violation of this part" means any violation of this act or the rules adopted under this act and
may be based upon any of the following as of July 1, 2006:
(a) Any rules promulgated pursuant to the Federal Trade Commission Act, 15 U.S.C. ss. 41 et
seq.;
(b) The standards of unfairness and deception set forth and interpreted by the Federal Trade
Commission or the federal courts;
(c) Any law, statute, rule, regulation, or ordinance which proscribes unfair methods of
competition, or unfair, deceptive, or unconscionable acts or practices.
(4) "Department" means the Department of Legal Affairs.
(5) "Order" means a cease and desist order issued by the enforcing authority as set forth in s.
501.208.
(6) "Interested party or person" means any person affected by a violation of this part or any
person affected by an order of the enforcing authority.
(7) "Consumer" means an individual; child, by and through its parent or legal guardian;
business; firm; association; joint venture; partnership; estate; trust; business trust; syndicate;
fiduciary; corporation; any commercial entity, however denominated; or any other group or
combination.
(8) "Trade or commerce" means the advertising, soliciting, providing, offering, or distributing,
whether by sale, rental, or otherwise, of any good or service, or any property, whether tangible or
intangible, or any other article, commodity, or thing of value, wherever situated. "Trade or
commerce" shall include the conduct of any trade or commerce, however denominated, including
any nonprofit or not-for-profit person or activity.
(9) "Thing of value" may include, without limitation, any moneys, donation, membership,
credential, certificate, prize, award, benefit, license, interest, professional opportunity, or chance
of winning.

A self imposed ban would probably mean nothing if there was not a history of schools doing so in anticipation of penalties.

The Supreme Court has also ruled in the past that sports are considered interstate commerce.

So in the very least there is an argument to be heard if the lawsuit goes to court. If a court decides otherwise, so be it.

Like I said, leave the law to the lawyers. Put your thumb in Calvin's mouth and STFU!!!

On another note, just wondering which poster is bigger in Calvin's household, Al Sharpton or Randy Shannon?

Great trade for Cristobal....IMHO....would rather have an african american coach on the staff who can recruit his tail off.

Out of all the positions that I am most concerned about the O Line would be it, and that is because of depth. We have lost several guys on the O Line in the couple years. As for the DT and DE positions we actually do have some talent in regards to potential. We are at about 8-9 deep at each position heading into the spring. Getting Muhammad was big at DE.

The problem we are having is developing the D Line rather than the talent level.

Gallo....your an idiot as usual....post all the names you want. When you list all of Goldens kids and say "no bowl appearences" or championships....without mentioning the fact we were co ACC champions and WOULD have gone to a bowl game last year had UMS attornies decided otherwise lets us all KNOW....your just stupid.

That list is all freshamn and sophmores for the most part. Dumb as*.

Damn, we got a bunch of Luke wanna be's here. Y'all fair weather fans seem to think that y'all know more about coaching than Golden. Why don't you all shut the hell up and support the team instead of knocking it down. You think this helps in in any way to make things better? Golden is doing a hell of a job with the cards he was dealt. One hell of a job. Now my coach can be neon green for all I care if he was was winning championships doing it the right way. The fact of the matter is that Randy didnt do jack during he's time here. I wanted him to succeed so bad because he was one of our own but he sucked as a head coach.

All the good players from Shannon in the NFL are just more proof that they under achieved with Randy. Thanks RS. GO GOLDIE!!!

Exactly EddieCane!

UN Secretary General Calvin and Jim Gallo Esquire are too busy criticizing because I'm sure they can do a much better job. Randy Shannon was a nice guy but could not develop talent......bottom line. Take off your rose colored glasses Calvin! What a doucher!

ALL THIS TALK ABOUT COACH SHANNON AND RACISM IS REALLY SORT OF UNNECESSARY! BOTH SIDES MAKE SOME GOOD POINTS BUT THE BOTTOM LINE HERE IS COACHING! GOOD COACHING HAS NO COLOR AND A COACHES JOB IS TO DEVELOP,IMPROVE AND MAKE GOOD USE OF THE TALENT HE/SHE HAS REGARDLESS OF COLOR. THE CANE STAFF I THINK PUTS TO MUCH EMPHASIS ON EXCUSES INSTEAD OF PRODUCTION. WHETHER I PLAYER IS A FRESHMAN OR A SENIOR, IF THE PLAYER IS THE BEST PLAYER AND IS PRODUCING GAME AFTER GAME THAN THAT IS YOUR STARTER. THIS DEPTH CHART EVERY WEEK CRAP IS BULL!! WHAT SHOULD BE EVALUATED IS PREPARATION AND PERFORMANCE IN GAMES. EX: IF A DEFENSIVE LINE GRADES WELL THE 1ST 4 GAMES BUT GAMES 5-7 HE GRADES VERY POOR WHY? WHAT IS HE DOING WRONG? WHAT CAN BE DONE TO GET HIM BACK ON TRACK? SIMPLE PUT HIM ON THE BENCH AND TELL HIM TO GET BACK TO PLAYING LIKE HE IS CAPABLE OF OR CONTINUE TO SIT. THAT IS COACHING! ALSO AS A COACH(YES I AM ONE)I SHOULD KNOW WHAT MY PLAYER DOES BEST AND WHAT HE DOESN'T DO THAT WELL. HIS WEAKNESS IS WHAT I MUST HELP HIM TO DEVELOP BY SIMPLY COACHING!! I SUPPORTED COACH SHANNON AND WILL ALWAYS BUT HE DOES NOT COACH THE CANES GOLDEN DOES AND THIS IS WHY I AN CRITICAL OF HIS EVALUATION OF HIS DEFENSIVE STAFF PERFORMANCE WITHOUT MAKING ANY SIGNIFICANT CHANGES. LACK OF COACHING!! 117TH RACKED DEFENSE! TERRIBLE COACHING!! SPRING FOOTBALL STARTS SATURDAY WITH THE TWO STOOGES STILL INTACT(DUNNO & FRANKLIN) LIKE IT OR NOT I HAVE TO HOPE THEY DO A BETTER JOB OF? COACHING! AS YOU CAN SEE WHEN IT COMES TO COACHING IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT COLOR YOU ARE AS LONG AS THERE ARE ONE RESULT ! WINNING. THIS IS YEAR 3 IF THE CANES DO NOT WIN 10 GAMES THIS YEAR IT WON'T BE BECAUSE OF YOUNG TALENT,INEXPERIENCE OR THE SCHEDULE, IT WILL BE BECAUSE OF ONE THING! COACHING!

My point is that Black coaches deserve a chance to suck! I'm not labling everybody racist, but the fact that we don't get the DC and OC jobs that lead to Head jobs is an obvious method to limiting Black's from HC opportunities. Plus at many D-1 schools the HC's salary is paid for by a group of big money boosters (aka Good Ol' Boys) who would never accept a Black as HC, unless, here is where it gets good.....The Black resources (Black Athletes) opted to go elsewhere. My alma mater USF hired a Black HC, but is only paying him $400K when they paid Holtz a $mil 2. I love UM, but until Spring Practice we need discuss all and any issues. At least the Noles and Canes have had Black lead the primary programs, but silly N Words flock to Gainesville like a slave ship disguised a cruise ship. Heck they would even let Strong be the DC! He had to share the job! D'Nofrio shoudn't even be in coaching period! Yet there he is setting records for futility and you got idiots saying give him more chances and making excuses for him. The defense will do better....because the only way is up from where we are defensively! As we get better defenders those kids deserve a better DC!

Don't worry man, a goldie said we didn't need denver kirkland, his philosophy is you win games from the outside in, which is why we've been stacking up on these tight-ends mascarading around as widereceivers and don't forget about that 5'10 165lb runningback we just signed, he'll more than make up for kirkland by mashing it in the line and being physical!

Many of these clowns said we didn't need kirkland, lol, what's better, 3 skill position players or 2 skill position players and 1 that can help block and give time to get the ball to 2 of those skill position players!

I can guarantee you if i was coaching the defense right now at UM for free and on pride alone wouldn't be 117th in the nation, let alone somebody paying me for it. For one, you owuldn't see me having our defense sit back and get picked apart, i'm going to make sure somebody has to make a decision. Our blitzes are abotu as obvious as they come, to many times our linebackers are blitzing 2 secs after the ball is hiked and are rendered ineffective.

Somebody is teaching them to engage o-linemen instead of using their speed to get around them.

This is why the first time i heard oach OH-NO with that fake yelling to futch when he first got here saying "quit running around the block and jack em up" in other words, go waste your time dancing with some big ole o-linemen and than look for the ball, by that time that man is down the field somewhere, gone!

hobbs" what are you a child....those are the definitions....the authority or law is sections 501.204 to 501.213...FDUPTA isall commerece based....UM's issue has noting to do with the statute...

all those post were all goldens recruits....that is the facts...UM did not will acc coastal..GT did...shoulda, woulda, coulda is for fantasy football....GT is in the recored books as sole winner of 2012 acc coastal divison...

13-11, 8-8 conference...no bowl apperances or divisio championships....2012 defensive rank is #117...3rd from the bottom....that is what is written on the tombstone

butch - coley - shannon - art - barrow - scott - harris - campbell - norland - carolity - notherwestern - booker t

go miami high class 1975....go stings

(NJ ginnys - exit at perth amboy #11 and get a pork sandwich )

hoobs, you have to be one dumb f...ck.....section 3a is federal commerece regulations.....UM and ncaa do not engage in ANY trade.....

any case basically will be heard in court.....so why has no complaint been filed by UM in court yet? sanctions have nothing to do with whether you file or are seeking damages....where is all this due process talk from shalala and UM attorneys?

ncaa could care less if UM files or not...I bet they hope we do so they can revisit all the testimony that was redactedunder oath...I'd love to have another chance at UM if I was their lawyer....love to subpoena shalala, golden, barrow, allen etc..their depositions would be very eventful.....photos, cash reciets, phone records, FBI files....love it...I bet ncaa lawyers are licking their chops pls the general public hates UM....what a great show...

Gallo, you're a complete idiot. Why do you think there are definitions at the beginning of any statute? So the reader will understand the statute! Why was it so difficult for you to understand that I was posting the definitions of the statute in question? (nevermind, I realize you are a window-licker)

On my previous post, I posted the definitions of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act! YOU have obviously not read the statute otherwise you would have known that! It is also obvious that you don't realize that Title 15 of the U.S.C. was referred to in the definitions. Why you ask?, because it has to do with trade and commerce you idiot!

Once again you have proven yourself to be unarmed in a battle of wits. Go back to posting as Canetrash you dolt.

Canetrash, I mean Gallo, prove your point (make a substantive argument) on this:

"UM's issue has noting to do with the statute..."

Like I said, the Supreme Court has ruled in the past that sports are interstate commerce, hence a possible connection to Title 15.

Put up or STFU Nancy

UN Secretary General Calvin, Cam Cameron was the Dolphin's Head Coach for 1 year. I think they might have fired him because he was too white. This could be an example of reverse reverse racism or white guilt.

What is reverse racism? Racism is racism folks. Look up the definition and stop trying to playing victim by "owning" the term racism. Heck, saying "reverse racism is racist, as is refering to wealthy whites as the Good Ole Boys or Coach Onofrio (no D) as doughy whiteboy. Stop with the non sense and stick to the Miami Hurricanes because it's 2013 and the only colors you should talking about on here are the Orange and Green!

jim, that was essentially my point to Calvin, hence the "reverse reverse racism". I agree with you. Utilizing the term "reverse racism" implies a perpetual victimization akin to self pity. I feel no pity for those in that situation, just disgust that they are willing to pity themselves.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is Calvin is a douchebag race baiter that would make Al Sharpton proud.

I say this. If u want an old school d.co than look towards da nfl,u still have lovie smith, dave wannstedt, butch davis, even ray lewis I know he just retired but why not have of of the greatest linebackers in history call youre defense he could even be ur linebackers coach. Im just sayn. Let some of the players that one a xhampionship at da u come coach at da u. when is enogh is enough. Im tired of our school being a laughing stock. Where is da respect? Didnt um create swagg? Lets go out there and take our respect.!!!!!

Lovie Smith would a great hire but is purely fantasy. The man should be a head coach in the NFL and at worst a D-coordinator in the NFL. I think it's unwise to assume that a former player is ready to be a coach strictly because they were a great player. Although I would love to see Ray Lewis work with our LBs and Ed Reed work with our DBs in the spring and maybe they could take their knowledge and if they have a knack for being able to teach it, parlay that into a coaching job and eventually a coordinator job.
