Day 2 of UM Hurricanes spring football practice: Tyriq McCord, Deon Bush, Phillip Dorsett, Tracy Howard

It was another beautiful day at Greentree Field on Sunday, with Day Two of spring practice in the books.

Coach Al Golden seemed pleased, saying the team "got a lot done'' and had "good energy again.''

Golden said he is now the special teams coordinator, taking the place of Micheal Barrow, who remains the linebackers coach. "I've been working with special teams my whole career,'' Golden said. "We wanted to free up Micheal to continue to recruit the way he recruits down here and also focus on the linebackers. A lot of them are very young, and they're going to have a lot to do.''

*Tyriq McCord has made the switch from defensive end to outside linebacker. Golden said "it's really not much of a departure for him'' because "he worked at open-side end or [strong-side] linebacker for us, and then obviously rushed the passer for us on third down.''

Last October, McCord, then a freshman, said sometimes he got "pushed around'' because he had only 232 pounds on his 6-3 frame. He started the 2012 season weighing 227, he told us Sunday. Today, he said he weighs 236 and would eventually like to hit 245.

He said he's eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to keep his weight up.

He said he "took the challenge'' of changing positions to "help out my teammates.''

"The reaction time is much faster'' being a linebacker, said McCord, who had 15 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles-for-loss and a fumble recovery last season. "I really see how fast the game is going because I have to read everything. I get to play out in space and sometimes I get to put my hand in the dirt -- I move the D-line sometimes. I get to run around and use my speed a little bit more.''

*Herb Waters, a rising sophomore receiver, had 10 catches for 227 yards and two touchdowns last season for a team-high 22.7-yards-per-catch average. He said quarterback Stephen Morris is looking very strong. "Better than ever,'' said Waters, who, according to Golden, had one of the best off-seasons. "I just worked out with my [more experienced] receivers and they've been helping me get better time-wise and in the weight room.''

*Safety Deon Bush, another rising sophomore, said this spring "feels very different having a year under my belt. Now I feel more comfortable out there and got adjusted to the speed. Sometimes it was difficult last year not knowing what was going on but I just had to learn quick.

Bush, who had 34 tackles and three forced fumbles in 2012, struggled with stingers last year, but said his "neck is stronger than ever. I've been rehabbing it in the offseason and just working hard getting bigger and stronger.'' He is listed as 6-1 and 201 pounds.

*Phillip Dorsett, a 5-9, 185-pound rising junior out of Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas High, was the leading receiver last season with 58 catches for 842 yards and four touchdowns.

He said competing in track has "helped me get in way better condition than last year.'' He also has put on five pounds since last season, weighing in now at 184 -- nearly 20 pounds heavier than as a freshman.

* And Tracy Howard, a rising sophomore cornerback out of Miramar High, seemed contented and happy Sunday.

Howard is back in the coveted black jersey worn by defensive starters, and ready to replace his mentor, departed cornerback Brandon McGee.

“The key is, he just had to live up to our expectation, not what the outside’s expectation was for him,’’ defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio said Sunday. “Once they become comfortable and understand that they don’t have to, Day One, come in and be the best corner that ever played… That’s unrealistic, and it’s really not fair.

“He’s improved because he’s doing exactly what we’re asking him to do. He’s improved because he’s [doing] the same thing that got him here. The reason why he had such success in high school is because he really loves and game and he will work really, really hard at it.’’

Howard ended his first season with 17 tackles and four pass breakups. He played in all 12 games and started the final one at Duke. He’s now listed as a starter opposite junior Ladarius Gunter, who had 27 tackles in 12 games (five starts) last season, plus an interception, two fumble recoveries and six pass breakups.

“I learned to be more patient,'' he said of last year's experience. Everybody wants to come in and be very dominant. But at the cornerback position it takes a lot of learning.”

blah blah blah blah..all rhetoric, lets see sept 7th.. that's when we'll see what my beloved canes are made of..i'm hoping for a beat down of those overrated gaytors, then the road to a bcs game..

I cant wait to see the offense explode.
Another year with the weapons we have should be a nightmare to deal with.
Hopefully Donofrio develops some sort of ailment and can no longer coach.
I feel for guys like tracy who couldve went anywhere and played in an attacking defense with a smart coordinator. But theres something to be said about a guy who sticks with it even when he's coached by an incompetent.
On offense we'll be world beaters.
On defense those boys need to stick with it and do what they can.

Gallo said: "Golden has done nothing at UM so far."

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

So Gallo, you are saying that the great Cane Jimmy Johnson does not know what he's talking about and you and Calvin know better than Mr. Johnson?

yes....al golden is not jimmy Johnson and is an insult since al golden has no accomplishments to his name let alone a winning record....

only a complete and utter idiot would say they are equal......al golden record and stats are worse in 2011/2012 than they were in 2010 under randy Shannon....#117 out of #120 total in defense....that's an insult to UM and JJ

Golden has to win or he should Cokerised or shannonized. He will do the job. But its up to him. Stop the excuses. Its boring and whimpish.

Take the vow to not read or respond to gallo/calvin/etc.

Let's get this blog to real canes talking about Canes, not basement dwelling Gayturds stirring up fake problems.

Jimmy didnt win his 1st bowl game at the U and title until his 4th year. And he lost 5 games with the defending nat champions in his 1st year. I love Jimmy, but his 1st few years was playing alot of young guys and had a much deeper roster than golden and no looming sanctions. Had al golden taken over this team now, then he would be expected to win. We go 2-3 deep on D and offense should be the best in the country. We have more talent on offense than alabama when the 2 blue chip Rb's and Griffin and Coley (wr/s hb) arrive in august.
Alquaddin Muhammed is a pass rush specialist, and MOrris will have multiple top rated TE's to throw to this year, really opening up Duke in the slot and the speed WR's.

ITs gonna be a long year gators and noles. HAHA..... 35-7 Sept 7, Miami. (we should put up 50) but ill call it at 35, and the gators have no offense...

Gallo once again lying said:

"yes....al golden is not jimmy Johnson and is an insult since al golden has no accomplishments to his name let alone a winning record....only a complete and utter idiot would say they are equal.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

There you go again taking things completely out of context and then creating a lie to support your latest B.S.

So, now you are calling the great Jimmy Johnson "a complete and utter idiot" and in the same dialogue bragging about what a great coach Randy Shannon was while leading the Canes.

As I have told you time after time after time...Jimmy Johnson loves Al Golden and has said he is the man for the job to bring the Canes back and you respond by calling Jimmy an idiot and claim you and Calvin know more about football than him.

We are all forgetting the MOST important question! How can Al Golden win without having a cool nickname???

Calvin: there it is....what else is there to say?

you have to expect to be the best to be the best....like I've said....golden/dnofrio are ok losing a few..that's what golden averages 7 per year...that will not change...

can you imagine that being said to JJ?

Gallo lies and more lies:

Calvin: there it is....what else is there to say?

you have to expect to be the best to be the best....like I've said....golden/dnofrio are ok losing a few..that's what golden averages 7 per year...that will not change...

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Once again you post nonsense claiming you and Calvin know more about football, specifically Canes football, than the great, Hall of Fame'er, Jimmy Johnson.

Jimmy loves 'Big Al' and knows he's the man to turn around the mess Randy Shannon left behind that was made considerably worse by a two and a half year NCAA investigation that was designed to destroy Miami's football program.

Nobody appreciates the post boards removal and moving to a Facebook login to silence critics more than Coach Golden. We'll know right away by the second game against Florida if this guy is selling us snake oil or we have a legitimate ACC championship caliber team. Let's not forget how you so called reporters bought in hook, line, & sinker last year only to get dumped on your butts.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Not so fast using ufelons as a gauge....they lost their D and have no O....it will not be until oct.before we find out
Gallo is as ignorant as usual..i would bet he is jls from the gator blod....ok, gotta get back to work so gators unemployment checks and food stams get there on time.....

Rabblerouser...didnt the media predict 4 wins. Last year? Wasnt the media sayjng how they djd better than anyone expected? All those freshmen and we still had a shot at a bcs bowl.

sidcane, you are correct. The team accomplished more than anyone thought they would last year. It will take time but I see the team slowly putting the pieces in place. One day soon we will be playing with upperclassmen two deep instead of fresh/soph everywhere.

Not only the media but even during the ACC spring meetings, ACC media from all over predicted Miami to be near the bottom of the coastal. What does that tell you?

Media people are just as ignorant as many on these blogs. In fact they are no better. Its all empty opinion pieces. Michael Wilbon, who knows nothing aboutthe canes except what he reads and watches on his own ESPN, picked Duke to destroy Miami a couiple of days ago. So did everyone else. And their collective sphincters tightened when UM had the ball with 10 seconds left to tie.

ESPN hates Miami. SI hates Miami. Yahoo sports hates Miami. CBS sports hates Miami. Manny Navarro hates Miami.

Thats OK. The U is used to being hated. Many of us who have followed the canes for DECADES understand that and we feed off it. I mean the media did nothing relativel speaking, and said relatively zilch about how about 35-40 student athletes were arrested at one point or another at UF under Urban Meyer. All they liked to talk about was Tebow and how great the agtors were. Same thing at USC when Bush and Leinert were there, until the scandal broke. If that was Miami, and proof is all the hearsay non-substantiated crap that was leaked by the media, Miami would be crucified. And there is proof of that, as Yahoo sports' came out with an article that the NCA has now realized is 80% unsubtantiated allegations. That is the anti-thesis of responsible journalism. Its sensationalism. At UM's expense. Because they want to bury the U.

That's whay I can't understand why someone like Calvin and cool cat who profess to be long tome UM fans come out here with so much negative Bull s.. . Gallo, Canetrash, titletown and soldy I understand- They are jealous pathetic little gators and seminoles who dont want the competition. Funny thing. Miami won 5 bnational ships when both UF and FSU were good one or both at one point or another, through the 80s 90s and 00s.

al golden will always be a mediocre coach...he is 40-45 with an average loss of 6.4 games per year at 7 yrs......bobby Bowden was a coach for 50 yrs and lost 129 games...his average loss per year is 2.5.......golden has been a coach for only 7 years and he already has 38% racked up in losses compared to Bowden and he still has 43 yrs to go.....the guy is a 5/7 loss per year coach...that is his statistical makeup.....this why a change has to be made....UM will never get to the show with him...NEVER

Bloggers are just green pea class of 2016....comparing golden to JJ is funny....you have no idea how it was back then....

Jimmy would say, as long as you are winning...ill take care of all the rest...in 1986 almost 40 canes got arrested that year.....Melvin bratton on a gun charge, Danial stubbs for petty thief, greg mark for thief, George mira for steroids, Alonso highsmith, Winston moss for assault, the telephone scam and the luxury lease car scam a lot of the players involved in....then there was incident at club manhattan where Irvin, bratton and bain brought their guns to almost a real shootout with real thugs.....

no one player kicked off the team....golden has kicked almost a whole team off....JJ never would have done that...comparing those 2 is like titts on a bull...

we will see next year.....but again now we have this colored shirt thing....another 300 book binder model...wtf....just plain practice man, don't go all organizational on us......

JJ loved Wannestadt and saddled the Dolphins with that loser. So who cares when JJ says he loves Golden.
Golden hasn't done squat yet and most of you speak of him like some sort of savior.

Gallo a coach will not hit a wall every year at a certain amount of wins , thats like a stupid insinuation even for you. With experience comes wisdom and as AG gets more and more experience he will get better and better at what he does, in the mean time he has a great base and work ethic and as everything comes together we will flourish in spite of your negative BS.Go Canes

Baseball update
Gators take weekend series by winning 2 out of 3 games against the over hyped and over ranked canes.
In a year where the Gators are off to a slow start all they needed was a visit from their pansies to the south to break out of their slump.
Basketball update
Canes lose to Duke
Football update
Al Golden off to his usual spring double speak, talking out of both sides of his arse while managing to say nothing.
Canes won't be tested until Sept 7th, where we will find out about Donofrio. OK we don't need to wait to find out, we already know Donofrio is clueless and can't coach. We will find out if the offense responds to the myriad new coaches.

golden is NOT going to have anything but 50-50 seasons until he fires his OC and DC who do not know squat about offense or defense.

The OC calls wasted pass plays to the flat or hail mary passes.

The DC has LBs five yards off the LOS instead of within 3 yards, No effective blitzes, stunting defensive linemen instead of straight up pass and run rush, NO containment of end runs, zone pass (give them a completion) instead of tight man to man coverage on pass plays.

Get ready for some more onslaught of excuses, too young, NCAA sanctions, no fan support of a loser and his coaches, stupid shallalaalalal and her all about the U and her goofy siren boy at NO life stadium, ugly all green or all pastel pink/orange uniforms, plenty of stupid stuff for all you fans to get your hopes up.

Has golden put a big back in the backfield to grind out three yards for a first down or a TD or as a real pass blocker? Nooooo.

Has golden made a commitment to get every player in fantastic shape and physical cardiovascular conditioning including the fat linemen who just trip over their own feet? Nooooooo.

For a heads up. PLAYERS win games when they are in shape and have a great coach. But COACHES lose games when they do not know squat about football. The strong beat the weak. And the smart beat the strong.

Enough is enough with all the excuses.

The next person who replies to any Gallo post is pig scum. Let's see who is the first!

And DEFENSE wins championships.
Offense just puts butts in the seat. Oooooo, a long pass, oooooo.

put your best and biggest and toughest players on DEFENSE golden balls.

Defense has to be mobile, agile and hostile.

CaneFan'72 you have a point and Golden is doing just what you say. he is moving most of our great TEs to the defensive side. He also moved Mcord to LB. He is shuffling the roster to better use our talent.
He brought in 3 new offensive coaches to improve our offense.
He is making all the right moves.

Canefan72, we just signed NY"s #1 RB and He is going to be the big back to compliment Duke and the other RB he signed, 2 time mr football in tennesee cornelius elder. All of our offense is now 3 deep plus, and Morris has the #1 Juco TE to throw to which will open up the deep wr core(All back) plus adding espns #2 and #3 wr's the best player in TX D Griffin and the best Wr in FL S Coley...... We now have a big back in Edwards.
WE were picked to win 4 games by most media outlets last year due to all the ranked teams we were due to play, K State, Notre Dame, FSu, UNC, VATECH, and the canes could have won 9 with 2 close losses to UNC(18-14) and UVA(41-40).

When your best DT's are hurt, when your playing 3rd string LB's, and playing mainly freshman DB"s, your gonna struggle.

We have 8-9 DT"s,our 3 sr DT"s all healthy(Porter,Pierre,Robinson), Grimble the 5 star due to breakout as a JR, Freshman from last year Eddie Moore, Jacoby Briscoe,Daquan Ivery, and the JUCO 100 DT #12 Komalu. WE HAVE NOT HAD THAT IN YEARS, to be able to rotate DT's. Now, We have depth at DT, Loaded a DE when Muhammed comes, LB DEPTH IS REAL DEEP, and The DB's have experience now and 2 of the best are coming in ,Burns and Carter.

No Weaknesses.. No excuses, and the big win over the overmatched gators in week 2 will start the sesaon off.

*******Like it or not, this might be the BEST HURRICANE OFFENSE EVER......just go position by position on OFF...Morris, (Broke Bernies pass record). Duke (broke portis rushing record)-now has tremendous backups this summer, TE-Per espn, the best TE class in the history of recruiting, TOP 3 O LINE, and TOP 3 DEEP WR CLASS(ALL OF THEM BACK) then add #2 and #3 wr's on espn 150 Griffin and Coley. LOADED........

Pathetic Muschump is gonna get smoked baby

D U Cane,
I would like to see some quick UM DEs and LBs be living as the extra men in the other teams' offensive backfields and tackling the other QB before he can hand off or look downfield.

No pass completions if the other QB has a Cane in his face, not to mention constantly causing fumbles, interceptions and throwing other teams' offenses for a loss. THAT is what wins games.

gacane: let golden execute his learning curve somewhere else....it can take years before he connects with a winning record.....the competitive landscape does not allow coaches to carry ineffective management....dnofrio is a liability and goldens lack of recruitment of impact players especially from dade county is alarming....

his record at temple was weak....he barely got by on 4 wins

2009: Miami (oh) +2 with a 1-11 record.....ball state +5 with a record of 2-10

2010: +1 bowling green with a 2-10 record.....+3 central Michigan with a record of 3-9

27-34 overall with 7 loss average per year even with these questionable wins....so how does that type of guy take UM to the BCS?...bobby Bowden went 50 yrs. with an average loss per year of 2.5....golden has already lost 35% of Bowden's 50 yr total in just 7 yrs....statistically golden is not a 1-2 or 11-1 type coach....however he did lower his loss risk with this schedule for 2013

well see....but I don't believe in miracles..just real time data

Final 247 sports ranking(combines all the recruit sites). Well Golden Bashers, with only 19 committs, he finished #11. During looming Sanctions, he didnt let any acc team, florida team, separate us from the pact. Also, #9 class for the U in 2012. We are loaded with Athletes.....Not many coaches can get a top 11 class with pending sanctions. Lousiville won Sugar Bowl and finished ranked somewhere near 40. We finished higher than OU, TX, USC, and the list goes on

1 Alabama
2
Ohio State
3
3 Notre Dame
4
4 Florida
5
Michigan

6 Ole Miss
7
7 LSU
8
8 Florida State
9
9 UCLA

10 Texas A&M
11 Miami

GALLO IS PURE TROLL FOLKS...

His goal isn't to have a a debate where he learns the facts.

His comments are pure, emotional hatred for Golden.

He ain't got time for facts!!

Waste your time arguing with him, he'll just find more lame excuses to piss you off.

He's a troll and that's what he lives for.

typo not a 12-0 or 11-1 or 10-2 type coach.....let me tell you something if he looses to fla and fsu....he will be done in dade/broward county....

well see....those 2 games are all that matters even if UM wins coastal....their whole season will be negated

It's amazing how one person can carry on a conversation between his several personalities for nearly an hour. Must be a busy day at the office...

If Miami went 10-2 and lost to FSU and UF, that means we are playing in the ACC title game vs Clem or FSU prob, with a chance at a BCS game and definitely going to a good bowl game. its 1 conf loss, and that doesnt mean crap....They are prob two top 10 teams. Now if they lost to FAU and USF, id be worried.

But if they only lose to those 2, WHO THE FLOCK CARES, 2014 is our year anyway, and this year should get us close to that goal of being deep enuf to compete with bama........ Miami should not lose to the gators at home

the recruiting class did get much better, some notice this, some did not, of course no ESPN or Yahoo.sports, or Rivals.com article mentions this, but if we had another 2 bodies rather 3 star or 4 star, this class would have been in the top 15, possibly top 10 if they were 4 star players.

Dom,
It is great to have great players. But if golden still has his OC who calls flat passes or hail mary passes instead of crossing and timing routes, furgetaboutit. Plus, last year, there was NO good blocking formations for any yardage between the tackles.

Similarly, if golden still has his DC in charge, forgetaboutit. Nothing will change because D'O does not know squat about defense and apparently, neither does golden because he keeps D'O in charge.

Football is a chess game, not some kind of rah, rah, macho, manly man, professional wrassling. Offensive blocking and yardage come from great blocking at the point of attack, the firstest with the mostest. And good defense comes from splitting the gaps to get to the ball carrier, containing the end run forcing it back inside, and getting to the passer before two seconds elapses from hiking the ball.

How about the Cane basketball team.
Will someone please tell Coach L to give his starters a few days off with no basketball. They look tired as hell and need to sleep for a few days on south beach.
Work the subs hard as hell and make them play the last regular season games and the ACC tournament and save the Cane starters for the NCAA tournament.

DOM,
Canes are never going to be competitive with ND or FSU or Kansas State or ACC teams much less Aladamnbama until Miami gets coaches who know about professional passing like the Pats or Baltimore or SF and who have a great defensive coach.

Show us a Hurricane team in the top ten in the country in defense, and that will be a team with a winning record. Until then, furgetaboutit.

oh now its 2014, lol....if UM looses both those games...checkmate on the recruiting trail for dade/broward.....

I get the D Stuff, but we played back up DT"s, 3rd string and fr lb's, and freshman DB's.....our best LB's were hurt all yr, top tackles out most of season, and young db's. we didnt have the depth to just reload . This is a totally different team now. He redshirted alot of kids last year also.
we did finish #11 on 247 sports n #15 on espn by the way. with a small amount of committs, which shows how good of talent he brought in

You have to play like every year is your year why wait. We could have had a better season last year. When we win the players will come. I believe our defensive scheme lost us a couple games and not the players. The blue chip defensive players from the state of fla didn't want to play in this scheme IMO. This is a very important year. We have to at least win one of those games against fla or state. I beleive we will beat fla but it still will be tough even will all of the players they lost because they have a defensive minded coach and they are coming off an embarrassing loss against Louisville. Fla state we jumped on them early and let them off the hook. Va tech will be back this year but we should beat them. With an aggressive defensive scheme i don't see why we couldn't go undefeated. I'm optimistic but the defense still leave a huge ? With a soft schedule.

We also have let some of our best linebackers go. Who says we won't have injuries again. Football is a game of attrition.

I have said all along that this should be a 10 win season, but the 2014 season, with 1 more class, and Duke and Tracy etc being JR's should be the year the canes are fully back and loaded....

With that said, Notre Dame(canefan)could easily have lost 4-5 games, won a few in the last seconds, ALABAMA, precious alabama, 2 seasons in a row lost at end of year. in 2011, they lost, didnt even play in conf title game, and bcs homers voted them in. LUCK.
in 2012, lost AT HOME, to Tex A and M, and again, Oregon and KST lost and they got voted in over 10 other 1 loss teams. THATS NOT A DYNASTY> A DYNASTY IS WHAT MIAMI USED TO DO. GO UNDEFEATED, and EARN IT.

UF has never had an undefeated sesaon. even in their title years. Say it outloud gallo and gaturds, We dont know what its like to win all 12 games. even ole ball coach and precious teabags and urban couldnt go undefeated....... what a joke.

Tally, we have alot of depth at LB Now, added 2-3 more in this class(top ranked guys). We lost #1 OLB Thomas, came back with #2 OLB Grace. Golden redshirted players last year also, and the freshman DT's(3 last year) all have 1 yr in the weight room now, Briscoe,Moore, and Ivery, and we r bringin in juco LB(rated #58 on rivals juco 100) and (juco 100 DT) Komalu, so golden has added alot of depth to the D, and we didnt lose anyone ..

Dom,

This man knows football and knows exactly what UM football is suppose to look like and how it's suppose to get there. goldie moving tyriq mccord to the outside has nothing to do with using him to his strength, just has more to do with them more than likely not bringing back ej44 this year or forever. I don't see tyriq mccord being that effective in space if he's trying to bulk up to 245lbs, that's what the problem was with all those Georgia tech linebackers, they were to big to do what was being asked of them to do.

Until they got rid of al groh(the other a.g.) and changed their defensive philosophy, that's when they actually started playing defense again. Going to be real interesting facing them again to see how they're playing defense now.

What's hurting our team also is, our defense is not challenging our offense in practice, playing 15 yards off the line of scrimmage is easy work for an offense, so when we go and play the gaytors and they're playing press-man basically the whole game and running the ball up the gut, we'll see if our defense has prepared our offense to go heads up with a more physical defense and dominate them. I know kehoe's boys will be ready physically but most important of all mentally.

We went up against k st. & notre shame and our offense got man-handled, not because we didn't have the talent but because they weren't practice everyday against the best defense in the country. That's why muschamp said it quick at halftime when they were playing Fsu, that basically he didn't care what the stats said about Fsu having the #1 ranked defense, he didn't feel like anybody was playing better defense than them, of course the gaytors won the game.

It's not that we're behind all these teams from a talent standpoint, we're behing from a philosophy standpoint and it will be exposed come the gaytor game. If we dominate the gaytors at full strength, i'll give goldie a 5 game pass on his boy oach OH-NO!

We have a new offensive coordinator if you didnt know that. And the last OC helped break Kosars record in passing and Clinton Portis record in rushing by the way with a young team
