« Day 1 of Hurricanes' spring football: Golden & James Coley, Hurlie Brown, Larry Scott sign in | Main | Sileo gone, Canes back at football, baseball tonight and Al Golden talks about QB/1B David Thompson. »

Day 2 of UM Hurricanes spring football practice: Tyriq McCord, Deon Bush, Phillip Dorsett, Tracy Howard

It was another beautiful day at Greentree Field on Sunday, with Day Two of spring practice in the books.

Coach Al Golden seemed pleased, saying the team "got a lot done'' and had "good energy again.''

Golden said he is now the special teams coordinator, taking the place of Micheal Barrow, who remains the linebackers coach. "I've been working with special teams my whole career,'' Golden said. "We wanted to free up Micheal to continue to recruit the way he recruits down here and also focus on the linebackers. A lot of them are very young, and they're going to have a lot to do.''

*Tyriq McCord has made the switch from defensive end to outside linebacker. Golden said "it's really not much of a departure for him'' because "he worked at open-side end or [strong-side] linebacker for us, and then obviously rushed the passer for us on third down.''

Last October, McCord, then a freshman, said sometimes he got "pushed around'' because he had only 232 pounds on his 6-3 frame. He started the 2012 season weighing 227, he told us Sunday. Today, he said he weighs 236 and would eventually like to hit 245.

He said he's eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to keep his weight up.

He said he "took the challenge'' of changing positions to "help out my teammates.''

"The reaction time is much faster'' being a linebacker, said McCord, who had 15 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles-for-loss and a fumble recovery last season. "I really see how fast the game is going because I have to read everything. I get to play out in space and sometimes I get to put my hand in the dirt -- I move the D-line sometimes. I get to run around and use my speed a little bit more.''

*Herb Waters, a rising sophomore receiver, had 10 catches for 227 yards and two touchdowns last season for a team-high 22.7-yards-per-catch average. He said quarterback Stephen Morris is looking very strong. "Better than ever,'' said Waters, who, according to Golden, had one of the best off-seasons. "I just worked out with my [more experienced] receivers and they've been helping me get better time-wise and in the weight room.''

*Safety Deon Bush, another rising sophomore, said this spring "feels very different having a year under my belt. Now I feel more comfortable out there and got adjusted to the speed. Sometimes it was difficult last year not knowing what was going on but I just had to learn quick.

Bush, who had 34 tackles and three forced fumbles in 2012, struggled with stingers last year, but said his "neck is stronger than ever. I've been rehabbing it in the offseason and just working hard getting bigger and stronger.'' He is listed as 6-1 and 201 pounds.

*Phillip Dorsett, a 5-9, 185-pound rising junior out of Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas High, was the leading receiver last season with 58 catches for 842 yards and four touchdowns.

He said competing in track has "helped me get in way better condition than last year.'' He also has put on five pounds since last season, weighing in now at 184 -- nearly 20 pounds heavier than as a freshman.

* And Tracy Howard, a rising sophomore cornerback out of Miramar High, seemed contented and happy Sunday.

Howard is back in the coveted black jersey worn by defensive starters, and ready to replace his mentor, departed cornerback Brandon McGee.

“The key is, he just had to live up to our expectation, not what the outside’s expectation was for him,’’ defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio said Sunday. “Once they become comfortable and understand that they don’t have to, Day One, come in and be the best corner that ever played… That’s unrealistic, and it’s really not fair.

“He’s improved because he’s doing exactly what we’re asking him to do. He’s improved because he’s [doing] the same thing that got him here. The reason why he had such success in high school is because he really loves and game and he will work really, really hard at it.’’

Howard ended his first season with 17 tackles and four pass breakups. He played in all 12 games and started the final one at Duke. He’s now listed as a starter opposite junior Ladarius Gunter, who had 27 tackles in 12 games (five starts) last season, plus an interception, two fumble recoveries and six pass breakups.

“I learned to be more patient,'' he said of last year's experience. Everybody wants to come in and be very dominant. But at the cornerback position it takes a lot of learning.”

Compulsive list making, ala you know who, is a sure indicator of a low IQ basement dweller.

What other schools can say they are 2 bad calls, both real bad(if there was replay in 88 miami wins vs no dame),*o3 fiesta, that would have 7 rings in 30 years not even counting the friggin bad game vinny had vs psu in 87 fiesta where miami still had the ball inside the ten down 14-10 on last play of game when vinny thru another pick..........

Yo doUches the only reason U were eligible to represent the Coastal last season was cause UNC was on probation. And so should U cheaters be.
So U haven't won the right to go play in the ACC ship yet.
Yo why U all get mad when bloggers post that Donofrio sUcks. Why not just agree and move on.

Numbers don't lie
Yo domasse give it up those same pubs U quote so much qualify all by stating the obvious that the sorry canes might win, may win, should win, 9 or 10 games if and only if some type of defense shows up.
That's a big IF with Captain ClUeless Donofrio at the helm.
Yo if U pUnks don't like Calvin or Gallo or CaneFan72 or Tallycane go take it up with them and leave me out of it dUmmies.

Gallo Said:

"Phil Steele is an idiot..."

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Here we go again...anyone that innocently posts something that could possibly be construed as a positive regarding the Canes Gallo immediately pounces on them with his lies, misleading gibberish, taking statistics out of context and calling them idiots.

First it was Jimmy Johnson who doesn't know what he's talking about and now college football expert Phil Steele is an idiot and doesn't know what he's talking about...and their sin was making a positive comment about the Canes.

Now Gallo is better informed about college football than Jimmy Johnson, Phil Steele and every Canes fan that posts on this blog.

cantrash cant stand the fact(that report was on Bleacher report just the facts). but Espn.com has picked the canes to win the coastal, br.com has now said miami might b goin to bcs, we all know we have possibly our best offense in the history of Miami football, and U idiots are scared to death of the beatdown miami is gonna put of Ufelony and FSnew this year. New qb in tally, a freshman, new deffense, new db's, new team....Lets hope dumbo didnt recruit overhyped 4-5 star kids.............

MIAMI 35, FLA 7 Sept 7 2013

Al Golden to UF backup QB Jacobi Briscoe, who spurned us in Feb 2012 class. Sorry, We dont need you!!!!!!
Just compare this cane roster to 2 years ago when we had 2 scholly qb's........I mean, we have 5 schooly qbs now,
rb's , 5-7 deep with 2 blue chippers coming this summer
TE's(as of 2012, were horrible) now per tom Lugiball last week on espn, this is the best class ANY SCHOOL HAS EVER BROUGHT IN FOR TIGHT END's
Wr---every 1 back, and added espns #2 and #3 wr's coley and griffin
O-line-everyone back, loaded depth, top 3 in nation
D
DT's. 8-9 now, bash all U want Mr D, but when your best guys were hurt and U had to play fr and soph DT"s, ur gonna suck. Now, 3 kids from last year all have 1 year in the program, and the 3 sr's are healthy, 5 star grimble is healthy, and the juco komalu kid is a nigerian beast.
DE-Chick cant b doubled anymore, green, DYRON DYE, Alquaddin Muhammed, Devonte Bond, the list goes on
LB---go 6-7 deep plus the espn 150 kids comin this summer
DB's.---howard,bush,2 kids redshirter last year, gunther, burns and carter coming, . I MEAN, for the 1st time in 6=7 years, we have tremendous depth with blue chippers at every position.

you idiots that bash only getting 1 DT in this class forgot Golden landed 3 in last years class, and this years class has 2-3 rivals 100 DT's in so fla backyard........

GET TO KNOW THE NAME IS C A N E S.....

CALVIE bloody well SPEAKS TRUTH TO POWER! And yes, as Calvin elaborated. The Mighty Gator OFFENSE is bloody well going to STICK IT uP " U KNOW WHERE!!! " Eh. What say.

Bottom line Goldie is a decent head coach and P.R. bUbba. But Goldie AIN'T ready for B.C.S. tier opponents. And the Duke game last season was just one GLARING, CONCRETE example. dUh.

Chit, the TWELVETH (12th) game of the season, and MIGHTY Duke lights up the home scoreboard. So much for y'all's BELOVED defensive coordinator and what not.

Uh oh, man are you sure, don't tell them that, because many bloggers on here would like for us to believe them when they say the defense got better as the year went on, they want us to believe them over the actually 45 points and almost 600 yards given up to duke. Now we did give up 9 less passing yards to duke(432 yds passing) than we did to boston college(441yrds passing) so maybe that's what they mean by the defense got better. Many of them have come to the conclusion that stats don't matter what they say should.

Between malcom lewis and lockhart, one of them need to redshirt in my opinion. lockhart was wasted last year and should've redshirted anyway, they bring him in for 2 overthrown jump balls by morris. All i'm looking to see is if morris accuracy has improved and if he puts consistent drives together and makes plays. To many times he left plays on that field that were there which is why he couldn't beat out j70.

j70's football i.q. was way higher than smo17's, in fact, we would've scored against notre shame and k st. and been in those games had j70 been at the helm last year, j70 was a playmaker back their, people who don't know football want to focus in on the hgih interceptions numbers that was caused by that inept oc we had in mark nipple, the stats don't lie, under 2 different coordinators jacory had single digit interceptions, only under 1 his and every other qb on the roster's i.n.t.'s went up.

Against boston college this man threw 4 picks being it was his last game and just went out and tried to make plays, but still only ended up with 9 pickes. d-co's knew they had to game plan against j70, last year he 2011 j70 torched bud foster and V-tech's defense only to watch clown 117th squander another game, people can't say it was youth in 2011 but they love to use that excuse now. What i don't like is coach goldie interferring with the part of the football team that works, like he did with the offense last year.

I'm thinking who's idea was it to waste to offensive plays trying to throw jump balls to lockhart against Fsu wasting a series that could've help us win the game, but to here goldie after the game say "it's ok, their a little bit ahead of us right now" is straight b.s., unless he was referring to Fsu's coaching staff being better than him and his mac crew i can understand that than, but player for player and the game being 16-13 in the 4th quarter, coaching lost that game.

All in all, Meyer compiled a combined 34-4 record in his second seasons at each of his three stops. And he doesn't expect his fourth second season to change that trend.

"Year Two's kind of a definitive year," Meyer said. "There used to be a time where you could go build a program and that really doesn't exist anymore. You gotta go win."
////////////////////////////////////////

I don't like oscar cryer, but i wonder who he's talking about, looks like he's taking a jab at somebody we know. Also, whoever the culprits were who tried to compare coach goldie to jimmy johnson, we've already discussed how that was an insult, what yall need to be doing is trying to see if goldie can even measure up to oscar cryer or nick saban, the ones who are chasing what jimmy did, saban failed cause he can only win in college, oscar cryer hasn't tested the pro's yet so time will tell on that one.

goldie is not even a better coach than most of the acc coaches, fedora beat em, he's 1 & 1 with frank beamer and his weaker teams, gumbo fisher got em 0 & 2, mike london got em 0 & 2, was 0 & 2 against spaz from boston college in comes adazio. coach cutcliffe is on his heels(52-45), so basically right now he's only been better than paul johnson in the acc and this man is hollering about "coastal division champs" come on man, get real.

To many coaches in the acc alone are way better than coach goldie, he has alot of catching up to do, play imes over with now, year 3, nobody wants to hear your crying, time to produce! I didn't even go to the coaches in the other division except with gumbo but we playing Fsu every year no matter where they at unless goldie starts trying to take them off to!

Mr. "Canetrash", is there anything negative you could say about Miami's football team that would a greater insult to them than the pathetic implication of yourself constantly trolling a Miami blog with a trademark cutesy syntax?

To all the fans that keep talking about depth. Any team would need more dt's if you have them covering quick outs and having de cover tailbacks(fsu) i the flats. That's not a depth issue. If we have a depth issue right now is because the coaching staff partly created it. The Paul situation still has not been explained, look at what happened to Cain telemaque might not have Ben able to cover but I saw him lay a lot of hat out there. Put him in the box or blitz him. Be creative. The sign of a good coach is knowing how to adapt to what type of team you have. They have been hell bent on running the style of defense and not adapting to the strengths of the players. Golden has even recruited towards his philosophy. He came in sayIng we thought the d would be behind so we knew we would have to out score other teams. Has he loaded up on offense or do the best defensive players no what's up and are staying away. Only time will tell. We can't win on talent alone these coaches must assert them selves and come up with a plan to get some pressure and 3rd down stops.

Also Calvin when jacory threw that last pick on the last play of the game the de ran right around one of our ot and he didnt even breath on the de. Everytime he threw the ball he had a facemask in his chest because the dc's new that they had a spread/shotgun qb trying to read a defense after turning around running play action. Defenses just blitzed him because they new that by the time he turned around he couldn't get the ball off without getting his head took off. We saw jacory bring us back in a couple of games because we were down by at least 14 points and they left him in the shotgun. He worked magic when he could spread out a defense.Jacory would have been better at a school like Oklahoma or even with Steve spurrier he would have mown how to use his skill sets. Fans talk about jacory but vinne and Gino threw a lot of picks when it mattered the most and they lost us championships with better teams than jacory had.

"Year Two's kind of a definitive year," Meyer said. "There used to be a time where you could go build a program and that really doesn't exist anymore. You gotta go win."

This is exactly what I have been saying all along....no team is going to go the route of "Charlie Weis"...those days are over....the competition for players is too keen today...you have to win immediately....it begs the question. Why is dnofrio here?

golden is not bigger than the brand or the fans....he is willing to let the brand languish in incompetence since golden THINKS he can build a team the old fashion way....maybe he can with the new AD Blake....

also phil steele is a complete idiot to rank UM #2 with strength of schedule when the ncaa that is the authority on that data has UM in its model at #49

To all the fans that keep talking about depth. Any team would need more dt's if you have them covering quick outs and having de cover tailbacks(fsu) i the flats. That's not a depth issue. This is why goldie and his boy clown 117th are imposters to me, they came in talking about "think players not plays" and nothing they've done reflects that in their game planning, particularly on defense. I always knew clown 117th was lying and just repeating something to try and sound smart. Even in his interviews he sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about and looks scared as heck because like offenses he doesn't know what the next question coming is. The good d-co's know how to anticipate offenses.

If that was the case, he definitely wouldn't be callign these bozo schemes, i still can't get over seeing curtis porter being asked to go and cover the flats, the last thing we need is for one of our d-line to tear and acl getting juked out by a runningback, it's a stupid call no matter how you look at it, that's what you got linebackers for. Alot of these kids might not know they're in a b.s. scheme, but we do.
tallyCane, they hated jacory like they hated shannon. Than alot of people like to refer to racism with the shannon marve/jacory situation. Than they started complaining about shannon when he recruited teddy bridgewater people started hollering about, "why is shannon only recruiting black qb's" but in all the years nobody ever said why is so & so only recruiting white qb's, now all of a sudden shannon is this and that.
jacory was one of the best qb's to ever come thru UM and i said it before and i'll say it again, had jacory been on any of the team ken dorsey was on with that same coaching, he would've obliterated the UM record books. Plus we would've beat ohio st. with no problems. This man threw for 70 touchdown passes with alot of those coming with matt pipho as his right tackle. For 2 years ken dorsey barely got touched as soon as he got a lil heat and they started breathing on em in that ohigho fakes game, he started nuttin up and throwing phatom picks.

All year he was missing andre johnson on crossing routes wide open, in that ohigho st game, same thing. j70 would've torched ohigho fake, boston college and all of them with that much talent around em, come on. I know kd gave it his all, but he wasn't as talented as j70.

"Before we’re telling everybody how to make changes, I hope we’re looking at Mark’s record in terms of playing defense, in terms of his track record, in terms of player development,’’ Golden said. “And to be honest with you, Mark should be as mad as anybody, because imagine coming to the University of Miami and having to play a bunch of kids.

"Imagine being saddled with that. He’s the one who should be mad"

shocking...a bunch of kids at a university...alert the press, lol

Miami has a lot of good players on defense. Problem was they were consistently out of place. Which falls on the coaches lap. Hopefully since Ray Lewis will be spending a lot of time down there with his son. Just maybe he will ask Ray about calling the right defensive plays. Strength of schedule is nothing more then an excuse to get a free pass to a bowl game. We all know any giving Sat or Sunday anyone can and will be beaten. If the playing is the same for both teams . They say the SEC is the toughest conference. They only play good teams in bowl games or at home. Don't count in state rivalry. Every other conference teams ranked in the top ten lose a game they tumble in the poles .Not teams in the SEC. If they are ranked in the top ten and loose a game. They might drop 1 notch. Is this a fair playing field. Look at the last poll of the season before the bowl games. SEC teams was going to be in the championship game no matter what. Big East was weak but Louisville gave the gators one of Ike Turner's to Tina don't get out this car beat down. Then the lowly ACC Clemson beat down LSU just a few. So Miami has a chance to run the table. Miami can challenge anybody from the SEC and win. Miami will beat Florida gators don't call it an upset. This is what Miami is suppose to do. You can add ACC Championship game and National Championship game to 2013 schedule.

The piss-ant Gallo said: "shocking...a bunch of kids at a university...alert the press, lol"

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Once again you've taken Coach Golden's words out of context. His comments about "kids" was a reference to the freshmen and Sophomores he was playing last year. Of course you knew that, but then again, you are so stupid you probably did take that statement literally--lol!

If you are gonna beat an sec team you have to beat them threw the air. Ta&M was a mediocre team at best in the big 12 and they added Kevin Sumlin from Houston who brought in a arial attack and they had success with Manzel at the helm. Arkansas was a mediocre team and then pertrino came in and brought an offense that slung the ball around the field and they had some success. Spurrier had a gimmick offense and had success in the sec. Payton manning had success in the sec even though he never beat fla. Jay cutler and vandy had a nice run in the sec even though vandy didn't have the horses to compete with the sec. Cam was a dual threat and won one in the sec. most sec teams have very good defenses but they normally play against other teams in the sec that run the ball and and play good defense as well. Eli had ole miss balling and they normally hadn't been good. Every once in a while they will have a good throwing qb to come along and light the sec up.Most sec teams play good defense and they have a conservative offense which makes their games look so tuff because both teams usually are doing the same thing. ga was good this year because they had a good qb. Any team that has good qb with an sec type defense will do very well in college football. We have a good qb and good offense but don't have a good defense and that will not fare well in the long run.

Great blog post thanks for posting

yes those kids whatever you want to call them...freshman or sophomores are not deserving of #116 out of 120 total teams......I suggest you go look at the rankings and ask yourself.....does UM have worse talent middle Tennessee #92or rice #82?...and golden defends him like its not his fault.....

this is why golden has to go.....his stubborn opinion will cost UM time and energy....lets see how him and coley get along when coley says enough with jedds playbook.....

UM is wasting our time with golden. You will all see

And this is exactly why i always told people the sec was overrated. spurrier dominated the sec for about 10 years because he had an air attack to go along with a running game. That's the thing about spurrier, people like to perceive him as some pass happy type headcoach, when that man has always kept a running game, he's just not afraid to test the other teams secondary and forces defenses to have to cover the whole field.

Those teams that like to play that old style of 3 yards and a cloud of dust, have it, as long as we get back to a True attacking style of defense, we'll be straight for dsure.

Toughest Schedule
(Teams with at least 9 Inter-Division games) Sorted
on Cumulative Opposition
Data Valid Thru : 12-JAN-13

#1 florida - opposition 89 wins / 40 losses = .0689922
#2 missouri - 82 / 40 = .6721311
#3 Texas AM - 75 / 44 = .630252
#6 arkansas - 74 / 47 = .611570
#6 auburn - 74 / 47 = .611570
#8 Kentucky - 73 / 47 = .608333

#49 UM - 63 / 56 = .529411

SEC by far has the toughest schedule....cant fool the data

Ahhhhhh yes, spring is in the air.Time for the Canes to work on improving individually and collectively as a team.I am happy that Miami will have a very formidable offense that will bring headaches to EVERY TEAM they play....Gators NOT withstanding.Sure hope they have an IMPROVED defense as that will head them back to respectability again. Can t wait to see if that will also happen.

Posters let me tell you...

Coach Franklin is one tough cookie..

At the Duke game we were playing decent on defense and then of course the famous let down occured in the 4 th quarter...
Coach Franklin got his group together (I was sitting right behind them, and could hear and see everything) and he started at one end of the bench as walked down that bench talking, gesticulating, and shouting to get these guys back in the game, and get his points across..
Some of the 'Canes fans encouraged him and said "Get it going Coach" and the guys obviously responded.
He did not at any time put any players down, he focused on their performance on the field, and demanded that they keep their head in the game, and forget everything else..
It was one of those moments where you could feel the intensity of what he wanted..

With that type of no nonsense, focused, and tuned in technique, Coach Franklin expected the BEST throughout the game and although the 4 th quarter was there, intensity was paramount to the end of the game.
With that kind of Coaching I think that the 'U' will continue to get better and have a fabulous year.
Go 'Canes

Yo Cane trash

U can't challenge Ur typical ACC pansie
U can't beat cellar dweller Virginia

U can't beat FSU
Yet U can challenge and beat the best teams in the land
Can U say delUsional?
Or just plain dUmb

Then some other cane Einstein wannabe comes up with a gem like "if U have a good QB and an SEC type defense and a running game then U can win"
Really? U just discovered the winning formula all by Ur moronic self?

Yo dUmb clUcks
U got a decent QB and a good offense
U got one of the worst defenses in the world
U got no special teams
U got clUeless coaches
Thank God U got a pansie schedule

Step up to the Golden Retriever Challenge
U know the one
He needs to fetch a minimum of 8 wins or we call his bluff
Call him the dog that he is
No more Kool Aid clUcks

U still B LOOSERS!!

Miami defense in 2012 spent the majority of time on the field because bad play calling and time management . The OC problem took care of it self. So with the New OC the defense shouldn't be on the field all day. Probably top ten defense this year. As for the SEC the toughest conference in the nation. Not including in state rivalries Who did they play out of conference and away games. They Only play top tier teams at home and in bowl games. Toughest conference in the nation.

Mr Mia, it' really embarrassing to read posts such as yours. As a graduate of the "U," class of 61,its"fans" like you who give the University a bad name. I'm no fan of D'Onofrio, but to wish an ailment on him is truly despicable, in bad taste and a remark that only a true lowlife would express. Please do not associate yourself with my Alma Mater. You are an embarrassment to that fine institution.

Yo Canetrash....your like a side show at a circus with your delUsional posts. When you make a comment like "we have no special teams".....it really shows us all how much of a clown mentality you really have.

Here is a fact you can take to your bank....The U is back and will be better then ever. Our recruiting class next year will be top ten.....we will win at least ten games this year....3 better then last year.

I get it....it sucks to envy us...thats why your constantly here. You really cant stand the fact that we have won the most SHIPS in the last 30 years then any other team. You say that we have not "been relevant for ten years....hahahahaha....thats funny clown....really....we have 5 SHIPS in last 30 years...we have won at lease one EVERY decade and you bring up the "last 10 years"....you fuc*ing clown....you know how many teams out there who dont have ONE National Championship let alone 5??

We have been relevant EVERY DECADE for the last 30 YEARS....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH....FOOL!!
