Golden letting the good times roll this spring for Canes because team has showed maturity

They filmed their own Harlem Shake video and have spent all spring bobbing their heads to music throughout practice.

Thursday morning the fun continued for the Miami Hurricanes as coach Al Golden ended practice by having his offensive and defensive linemen line up and try to catch a simulated punt from a jugs machine.

After 10 embarrassing and rip-roaring moments of laughter, defensive lineman Luther Robinson saved the team from sprints with a bobbling catch and a 50-yard dash and dive into the end zone with a happy team chasing him from behind.

"We capture that film now, hold it until the perfect time to show them," Golden said with a smile. "All those guys who think they're great athletes, AAU basketball players, the truth is revealed."

As tough as the past two years have been with an NCAA investigation hanging over the program's head and players getting themselves suspended with off-the-field issues, Golden said he's allowed the team to cut loose a little this spring because they've earned it.

"This is a very mature team," Golden said. "Every year is different. These guys go to work and they make it fun. They make it fun because they're where they need to be. There's not a lot of list guys. They got a purpose and a focus about them. When you have that you can really enjoy the journey."

Tight end Beau Sandland, one of the Hurricanes' most prized new additions, said he's been blown away by how much fun Golden and his staff have had this spring -- while also getting the important work done they need to get done.

"I'm so happy I'm here right now," Sandland said. "Coach Golden's been in our shoes. He played tight end, played in the league. He knows how tough it is. The vast majority of teams aren't going to have a three-day weekend on Easter and a barbeque. You saw there at the end we were supposed to run and he gave us every opportunity at the end to not make us run. It's definitely exciting to have a real close-knit team."

Part of that closeness, Golden pointed out, is built by having the team's out-of-state players like Sandland spend Easter weekend with their Florida-native teammates. Inside the team's locker room, Sandland said, is a list dubbed: "No Player Left Behind."

"Our parents are great," Golden said. "Kacy Rodgers' mom and Duke Johnson's mom cooked for players last Thanksgiving. Parents step up and say bring so-and-so over and will cook for them and spend the weekend and it's fun."

> Hundreds of local recruits and coaches attended Thursday's practice and were treated to a barbecue with the team afterward.

"It's great," Golden said. "What can be more revealing, an honest look at your program than having them watch you coach, interact with the players? We must have had 400, 500 people out here today including coaches, family."

THIS AND THAT

> Golden said Ryan Williams is continuing to fight off redshirt freshman Gray Crow for the backup quarterback job behind Stephen Morris. Williams has shown better arm strength and speed in the pocket.

"Stephen needs to understand his competition is not necessarily here" Golden said. "He's competition might be at Texas or USC. He has to understand if he wants to be the best he has to compete against the best in college football."

> Golden said the areas of improvement he wants to see in the team's next scrimmage a week from Friday in Naples is "goal-line offense and short-yard offense."

"We didn't finish drives as well as we needed to," he said. "Our tackling needs to improve dramatically on defense. I thought we did a much better job on defense of eliminating the explosive plays. But we didn't get the ball down the field enough on offense either."

> Golden said the biggest surprise of the spring at tight end has been redshirt freshman Jake O'Donnell.

"Now you're talking about five guys competing for playing time," Golden said. "It's raised Clive [Walford's] game. It's raised Asante [Cleveland's] game. I said last week Asante is having as good a spring as anybody. It gives us a chance to go with two tight ends on the field or in Clive's case deploy him, flex him out and get him the football more than we have the last two years."

* a ticker tape parade? Kind of like you did ALL SEASON LONG in a confused attempt to make Al Golden sound bad? Or like you still do for that winner Randy Shannon?

* What do you mean Larranga is responsible? I thought he was the example of what a good coach is? You know, as opposed to Al Golden?

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1584408-should-miami-keep-pushing-its-ncaa-fight-or-has-school-done-enough

Keep your foot on the gas Donna! Hopefully, ESPN will do an Outside The Lines segment on the NCAA and their "at any cost" mentality to destroy Miami. If it means exposing any more rumors or allegations then so be it. Why give "former" players but not current players "immunity" if your intent was truly to find out the facts and not to just destroy the University?

The two moron twins, Gallo and Calvin, now see themselves as hoops experts as they've taken to ripping the Canes basketball team, much like they attack Coach Golden with their lies.

They claim to know more than Coach Larranaga and accuse him of not having the team prepared for last night’s game, didn’t know how to make the proper adjustments and Scott and Larkin really don’t know what they are doing and their ignorant criticisms only grow with each and every one of their ignorant posts.

But, the biggest lie of all is they absurdly accuse this great bunch of kids of QUITTING! Those wonderful kids wouldn’t know how to quit, it’s not in their DNA and as those who are not like the Gallo and Calvin trolls and liars know, they fought their backsides off the entire night and winning the NCAA tournament was their dream. If you watched the last minutes of the game, even though it was hopeless at that point, the kids fought valiantly to the final whistle.

Last night was an anomaly and the loss is simple to explain; EVERY PLAYER on the Miami roster was ice cold on a typically pure shooting team. At one point they were an incredible 1 for 12 in 3 point shooting—you could blindfold our 3 point shooters and they would almost certainly do better than that. This wasn’t due to the players not having good looks at the basket--it was simply a case of an entire team going cold all at once at the worst possible time. You see this phenomenon happen from time-to-time in baseball where a great hitting team goes through a period where their entire line-up couldn’t hit the ball off a “T”.

Real Cane fans will celebrate this unexpected, historic Miami Basketball season. And more importantly celebrate the great kids who truly gave their hearts and souls to making this wonderful ride a reality.

I have never been more proud to be a Miami Hurricane.

AS A COACH I CAN CONFIRM THIS ABOUT COACH GOLDEN'S STATEMENTS AND HIS HAVING FUN WITH HIS TEAM! THEY ARE LOADED AND WAY BETTER PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY IN THEIR WORK EFFORTS. HOW CAN YOU TELL? THEY ARE GETTING A LOT OF WORK (REPS) DONE AND ARE IN BETTER CONDITION THAN IN PREVIOUS YEARS. WHEN A COACH SEES HE HAS A GOOD TEAM THE MAIN THING HE WANTS THEN IS GOOD EXECUTION AND CONDITION. IF THIS TEAM WASN'T SHOWING IMPROVEMENT TRUST ME THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN RUNNING AND RUNNING AFTER PRACTICE. WHAT MAKE'S GOOD PRACTICES IS WHEN THE COMPETION IS SO TENSE BETWEEN THE TWO SQUADS(OFF/DEF) AND THERE ARE BIG PLAYS BEING MADE BY BOTH. WHEN A HEAD COACH IS HAPPY THE TEAM IS DOING THERE JOB ESPECIALLY WHEN HE COMES OUT PUBLICALLY TO TELL EVERYONE ! WE JUST MAY HAVE SOMETHING SPECIAL GOING ON IN S.BEACH! ANOTHER THING IS THIS!! FOOTBALL TEAMS DO NOT LIKE TO BE OUT DONE BY THE BASKETBALL TEAM!! NO HATRED!! BUT IF THE BB TEAM HAS BETTER SUCCESS THAN WHO HAS THE EDGE WITH THE LADIES ON CAMPUS ? THINK ABOUT IT! HOW MANY FOOTBALL SCHOOLS HAVE WINNING BB TEAMS AS WELL ? BUT QUOTE "BASKETBALL SCHOOLS" HAVE TERRIBLE FOOTBALL TEAMS. NOW THAT THE BB TEAM AT THE U HAS GOTTEN THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT THE FOOTBALL TEAM WILL STEP UP IT'S GAME. THIS IS WHAT GOLDEN IS SEEING IN PRACTICE. GO CANES!! ACC CHAMPS IN (FOOTBALL) NOT YET! BASKETBALL!! HELL YEAH!!

I stay with my Canes win, lose, or draw. Great year and I took time from my move to welcome them home at the BUC then I am going to get $30 worth of footlongs.

Go CANES!

I usually don't respond to others opinions because there're entitled to them no matter if ridiculous or not. But Gallo if I may. Mature is a relative term not nessarily related to age or time with. I your lust to cast doubt on this coach and these kids you go way over board. You don't have to be a 3 year letterman to be mature. The coach was referring to the fact that the "team" does all the things they didn't do in his first two years that they do without being told. Thats a sign of maturity. The dinners etc. are intended to build comradeship. My cousin went to vietnam as a 19 year old kid. He matured a few days later when ambushed while on patrol behind enemy lines. So these kids who regardless of you opinion can be regarded by their as more mature than his past years without microscopic analysis from you every day. I ask you show some maturity.

Everyone's support meant more than words can describe... I will forever be a Miami Hurricane!

I could've never landed in a better place then at UM after transferring from UF. I had the time of my life. Thank you!! Canes for life

Gallows Nevins tight buddy wouldn't know maturity if it jumped up and hit him in the face.

This guy is an over the hill, bloviating, windbag.
Ignore his sorry missives, and support our Teams..He shows that he does not have a Cane bone in his body.
Typical Nevin type hangeron..

His true colors are flying and typical Nevin like tantrum blaming everyone for a condition or loss.
Ignore and delete.

Twenty-four hours after the Heat’s winning streak came to a screeching halt at 27 games, the University of Miami basketball team was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament with a 71-61 loss to Marquette that was not as close as the score indicates.

Talk about a one-two punch.

Anything else []_[] need to know []_[] just axe...

1.) Reggie hurt his knee.

2.) D. Scott got hit in the mouf and couldn't practice Tuesday.

1.) Reggie had surgery on his knee and did not travel to the game...a huge loss in more ways than one.

2.) D. Scott got hit in the mouth and couldn't practice Tuesday and Wednesday.

3.) S. Larkin had food poisoning and threw up all Wednesday night and was still very sick during the game.

4.) The ride to the Arena took 55 minutes due to traffic, but that made no difference.

5.) The REFS were fair!!!

6.) Insert Ur congratulations to this great Canes team here...

Twenty-four hours after the Heat’s SET A 40 YEAR winning streak at 27 games, the University of Miami basketball team ALSO SET A RECORD IN BASKETBALL AT THE NCAA Tournament with WINS OVER THE TOUGH Illini and a feisty Pacific.

Unlike the Gators the Mighty Canes won their conference after facing a brutally tough out of confernve schedule…talk about a one-two punch.

Just a few posts up on this same thread you said the kids quit...you slime!

Gallo's newest is a classic, " I sit watch and listen". No you just run your mouth incessantly via the keyboard. You're a fraud.

calvin: well they did with larkin like you said....boxed him at every turn and kept him to the left of the basket.....but just surprised nobody stepped up.....

well see next year, was a good run....

Just goes to show how good of a ocaching job larranaga did this year, when you only got 1 player that can score on a consistent basis and get his own shot off, that can only take you so far. larkin at his size is real effective, at the same time though, when you don't have other guys who can get their own shots on their own, it's going to get exposed at some point. We have a bunch of spot up shooters. kenny k takes to many bad & wild shots. rio brown, needs to improve his ability to drive an score.

Oh, and whoever cited the twin experts in BB and FB (Calvin and his girlfirnd Gallo), don't forget weight management. Calvin is an expert in every player's optimal weight--- down to the nearest 1/4 pound. Calvin spends a lot of time eyeing them to get it just right.

tk swan, i see your post and it sounds good, and i don't have a problem with what you're saying about goldie right now when it comes to spring practice. It's all speculation at this point if this team has improved or not from a defensive standpoint. Right now, i don't trust goldie's eye for knowing what a good team looks like, he tried to tell us last year how good a football team boston college was, i didn't think they were good when we were playing them, go see their record, he tried to tell us how good Georgia tech was with al groh as they're d-co, ask middle Tennessee st. how good Georgia tech was to them.

He tried to tell us how good NC st. & Virginia were, than after us being 117th on defense, i'm not sure all this let's have fun stuff is going to play out, if it makes the team close to dominant, than that'll be good, come the regular season if we still trying to make excuses for the defense, than all this playing around in the spring is going to look real stupid.

Most of the great & some good coaches don't let up on their team until after they hoist up that #1 trophy and even with a big lead in the 4th quarter, they'll still coach it all the way up to the end, goldie letting his foot off the gas at 13 & 11, ok, he has a plan is what they're saying, coe september, we'll see.

Are the guys making plays now on defense because of having one more year under their belt or because of james coley being suspect!

Shalala finally found her nuts....way to go! Let's take the ncaa on!

Children children......grow up!

Lmao at all these "will show you how it;s done?" as if they are part of what the teams does! lmao, roflmao!

Best response to those kissing cousins Gallo and Calvin.... IS NO RESPONSE, treat them as if no one reads or listens to their inane comments. don't respond and then they call talk between themselves and amuse the rest of us as they do!

This man belongs in Miami for sure lol:
///////////////////////

pat riley fired back at Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge, who called LeBron James' complaining about hard fouls against the Chicago Bulls "almost embarrasing," earlier Friday, with a simple message, "Danny Ainge needs to shut the f--- up and manage his team,

"We didn't finish drives as well as we needed to," he said. "Our tackling needs to improve dramatically on defense."

same problem as last year

So if we are winning high scoring games and the defense has given up 2000 yards in 4 games but we are still undefeated. Do we make any changes or stay the course.

Make a change at dc....high scoring games put too much pressure on the offense. It alters the way you call plays.

I think coach goldie should show a lil more gratitude towards the offense from last year by not letting the offensive flaws be the first thing come out of his mouth and be more consistent about the flaws of the defense and how it's going to get fixed.

Unfortunately I don't think Al. Golden will make a change. He will sugar coated and say we are off to a good start. Stay the course.

117th in defense? Why do you care about Colorado's defense?

that was last season you dumba55es.

New FSU recruiting coordinator Tim Brewster sent out this Twitter dispatch to prospects in South Florida the other day: "Need the 305 to know Doak is sold out 85,000 every home game. Wow!! Go Noles!! #NoleNation."

Actually, Doak Campbell Stadium was sold out only twice in seven games last year and averaged 75,601 fans per home game. But, hey, all is fair in love, war and college football recruiting. If you ain't lyin', you ain't tryin'

Tim Brewster must have went to the Calvin school of making up facts.

Oui Oui

Figures a pathetic gator fan will speak french and brag.

Joaqim noah.. Fugly mofo. Cant get any uglier. He a proud gator

I cant wait for the football season to begin.

cant wait for 09/07

regarding that seminole tweet that they "fill" the doak every home game--- who cares. What have you won? You all are still the gators" beeaotches, and no ships yet. Of course, you keep getting ESPN to over rank you all in the top 5 only to pee all over yourselves

Donna Sahalala should keep her foot on the neck of the NCAA. That is an arrogant, patronizing, corrupt fraudulent organization.

Jim MOrris needs to be relieved of his coaching duties. This UM baseball team is inconsitent and under achiveing. pitching is awful except for B rad and hitting , like the last 5 years is horrible. Where are the sluggers??????

Fire Jim Morris dot com.

maturity meanin they know how to handle losing like good sports. get used to it, golden is a lousy coach. and UM, is a lousy program, like morris and that pathetic thing called a "team", the only bright spot for miami is mens and womens basketball. even in their loss, the bb team was great all year. even so, go canes. but reality is what it is, and reality says miami will have another year of disappointments. what's amazing, the baseball team, and basketball team have now won titles, both in a good acc conference. but the football team, in one of the worst conferences in america, has not.

The teme for this Spring seems to be loosey goosey, having fun, team building with family BBQs and cookouts and story telling by the campfire. I thought this was a Boy Scout troop. But it seems to be your Miami canes football team. I remember last year the Spring theme was weightlifting, strength training and such. How did that work out for you?
Maybe this year it will be different............
Congrats to the BB team for getting to the Sweet 16 and having more success in one year than the football squad has had in all their ACC years. Maybe this will put football on notice that the status quo is not acceptable.

ACC Regular Season and Tournament Champions

Have you seen your SEC championship (LOL!)

Gators Oui Oui in their cowardly pants

Adam Torres picked up a scholarship offer from Miami on Thursday.

Big-time schools are taking notice of Torres, who is quickly becoming a big-time prospect.

“It’s definitely a big one,” Torres said of the Miami offer. “I’ve been talking with Coach [defensive line coach Jethro Franklin for the past few weeks and I finally got down there.”

Torres (6-6, 270) -- watched the Hurricanes practice and then talked to head coach Al Golden, who offered him the scholarship on the spot.

“He said he liked me, liked my game film,” Torres said. “They look at me as a defensive lineman.”

“It was nice. The coaches, the players stood out. Everyone was respectful and you could tell from watching practice that they’re a well-disciplined team.”

Lots Gator talk from U sissies. Just a fact for U, Gators still in it, U were sent home, even FGCU is a better team than U. Just a fact.
