Canes sophomore middle linebacker Raphael Kirby making impression this spring

It wasn't quite as memorable as Micheal Barrow's hit on Florida State's Tamarick Vanover or even as bone-jarring as Jonathan Vilma's blow to Nebraska's Ben Zajicek.

But when sophomore middle linebacker Raphael Kirby laid out freshman tight end Standish Dobard with a vicious hit during last Friday's scrimmage in Naples it definitely evoked memories of the days when the Hurricanes had a nasty presence in the middle of its defense.

Kirby (6-0, 230) celebrated his hit by raising his arms in triumph while Dobard (6-4, 255) laid on the ground waiting for trainers to come check him out and escort him off the field. Except for the 15-yard penalty Kirby would have received for taunting on the hit, UM coach Al Golden said Tuesday he's liked just about everything he's seen from his sophomore middle linebacker this spring.

"Kirb is going to be good," Golden said. "He's a bright kid and he's a hard worker. He's got to get to the point where it's second nature and he's not thinking. He's getting there. He's made a lot of progress this spring. He's been in a black shirt the majority of the time.

"He shows up at scrimmages. He had three or four physical plays the other night. You know, the taunting notwithstanding, which obviously, in that situation we taunt, we give them 15 yards and it turns into a touchdown or whatever. And that's a lesson for the whole team. But that notwithstanding they played really physical the other night and we've just got to continue to move him forward. But I'm excited about Kirby."

Kirby, an early enrollee as a freshman, was well on his way to making an immediate impact last season when he injured his right knee during a fall scrimmage. He came back for the final seven games of the season and tallied just 16 tackles.

"When I came back I was probably like 75 percent," Kirby said Tuesday. "I pushed through it, played when they called my number and got the experience."

But playing at 75 percent was definitely frustrating. Kirby would often limp around and favor his left leg. Now at 100 percent, he's been splitting reps with senior Jimmy Gaines at middle linebacker.

He said he gained 15 pounds of muscle in the off-season and now bench presses the NFL-testing standard of 225 pounds a total of 28 reps (junior Denzel Perryman is tops among linebackers with 33 reps).

"This spring I've just been working on being more vocal and being very physical, playing attached, getting guys lined up and being a leader in the middle," Kirby said.

"My goal [in Saturday' spring game] is to go out and have fun, play fast and get to the football and make plays."

Kirby did that last Friday. Aside from his crushing blow on Dobard, he tallied five tackles and had a pass deflection in pass coverage. But that hit Dobard definitely left an impression. Coaches made Kirby run sprints for the final portion of the scrimmage after the hit. Kirby said he apologized to Dobard afterward and said there is no bad blood.

"I believe I can be that type of player," Kirby said of being a vicious hitter in Miami's defense. "You just have to play balls to the wall every play. You can make a lot of plays and be dynamic when you stick to your assignment."

> Defensive end Jelani Hamilton injured his knee during Tuesday's practice according to Golden.

"He got hurt in a warm up drill, went down to pick up a fumble and got hurt," Golden said. "I really have no idea [how long he will be out]. Non-contact injury. Obviously we're concerned about it. It's unfortunate. We're trying to reach his family to get an MRI. Definitely an injured leg."

> Former Hurricanes recruit Angelo Jean-Louis, now at Marshall, was arrested Tuesday morning on felony charges of using a stolen credit card to purchase roughly $25 worth of food at a 7-11.

Gallo, you maggot, are you going to tout Agelo Jean-Louis as one of the "got away" kids as a way rip Golden.

You are a sick twisted fruit, Gallo. Blog Pig.

Gallo you POS how can you look in the mirror and not vomit? You usd to list Angelo jean Louis as one of goldens losses

There you go.

Love me this Kirby kid. Beast in the making.

By the way- my stats corrected from an earlier post:

The U is 45-37 against the SEC since 1961. that's 41 years. And the U has played each and every one of the 12 current SEC teams except maybe Mizzou but I am not sure about Mizzou.

Why do we feed the troll gallo before he's even posted. Ignore the troll and he leaves. Not that hard.

Canes baby! I still hope Eddie Johnson comes back.

I know that the Defense will be better, but mainly because we certainly can't be any worse. Despite the loss of our primary DL recruits to our rivals, we will still be a better front because of better competition and experience. Hopefully the staff has learned what kind of effort it takes to ink players in high demand at DT. These guys aren't as commom as skill position players and therefore need to be convinced the bright lights of Miami better than entertaining 70,000 people who only want to see you on Saturdays.

Congrats Miami on the compliance director hire. To bad these kids parents, guardians or elders haven't educated them on the importance of supporting institutions that are welcoming and award opportunities to the qualified. They could put "Good OL Boy's Only" on a train and the ignorant African American players will still board it for North Florida.

"are you going to tout Agelo Jean-Louis as one of the "got away" kids as a way rip Golden"
Well how about that Golden recruiting felons. The shame.
And how about anoiting Kirb the next Vilma, after just one practice where he laid wood on a slow TE .

Reaching for straws cane fan?

^^^^^^^^^^^

yep, dope. Only difference is that Jean-Louis was never on the roster and committed the felony when he was with another team.

The UFailure Trailer trash commit the felonies while on the team. So, I guess, that counts for something.

Grasp as trailer-straws, trailer donkey?

Gallo was not born; he was hatched.

Love this kids attitude....Cane mentality for sure. I truly feel someone from the Turd squad will get carted off the field Sept 7th....RB....WR OR QB.

"I believe I can be that type of player," Kirby said of being a vicious hitter in Miami's defense. "You just have to play balls to the wall every play. You can make a lot of plays and be dynamic when you stick to your assignment."

After seeing what Louisville did to them....with our offense....Miami is going to as* whip the turd team IMHO.

38-17

As for the upcoming Gator game, some of you are making some mighty claims as to how bad we beat them. I would love for us to destroy the gators but something in the back of my mind is telling me to be cautious. We will certainly be better. Not sure the gators will be any worse. Will they play like the team that beat Texas A & M or the one that got destroyed by UL? Don't know. Let's hope and pray we bring our best and beat the gators!

I think the Gators will be slightly worse on both defense and offense with the loss of Elam, Floyd, their starting RB, and offensive line injuries. Miami will be slightly better on offensive with the return of nearly all starters and should make significant improvements on defense. Whether that translates into a win remains to be seen. The Gators aren't as bad as that Louisville loss - they didn't really seem to care about that game. Even with the losses, their defense will still be one of the top defenses in the country. You can bet they will be fired up for the Canes. The Canes will have to play their absolute best to win. I hope the coaches put in the work over the summer to dissect the Gators and come up with an effective gameplan. This game has huge implications for the long term success of the program.

Great to hear that Kirby has fully recuperated and now getting into the mix. Wish I saw that big hit on Dobard but couldn't make it out to the west coast. Sorry to hear about Hamilton and hopefully it's something simple like a strain and nothing more. We definitely need him for depth on the Dline. CAN'T WAIT FOR THAT SPRING GAME AT JOE ROBBIE STADIUM.

GO U!!!!!

What happens when Kirby gets hurt again ?

Attention Gator Girls...Attention Gator Girls...September 07th 2013. And by the way your boy, the cross eyed hillbilly, handed cash directly to players with first hand witnesses! It's ova!!!

Later Gators

Jelani Hamilton getting injured has happened again?Either he s snake-bit or just plain injury-prone.Too bad for him too bad for the Canes.

It just goes without saying: Um has never had a problem getting players to play and play hard. But with this coaching regime, the same coaching regime that doesn't realize it's giving up 600 yards a game on defense, the same DC that has legitimately acquired the moniker, "DunnoToday, DunnoTomorrow, DunnoGameDay, JustDunno, still has no idea as to what is happening.

Offense will pick up where it left off last season and hopefully with WR's full speed. Duke for at least Honorable Mention All-American. Morris, too.

I'm going to "give" Dc one game to show that he's not dumb.

As thin as we are on D, we cannot continue losing guys at LB and D-Line. It doesn't sound good with Hamilton.. Dammit!

More hype. Every year, we read how the def. front is ready, they will make sacks and "dominate" the line of scrimmage. Then the season starts, teams line up and run right through the heart of the line, past the lb's, and into the secondary. Little or few adjustments are made, and the def. looks like a high school team. AGAIN
Then the offensive line, "we will make holes, protect the qb". Guess what, except for Duke's talent, the yardage comes now and then, Nothing consistent. Morris throws a long pass, dropped. Now the other team knows, we can't run, and they
attack our always WEAK line and push them around. Morris runs for his life, makes some great throws, and some bad ones.
It's the same every year. We hear how much improved, stronger, smarter, faster. We have more depth, and when the season is over, it looks similar to the last one, and the one before that. Reality is, this program just can't dig out of the hole Coker put us in, and Shannon dug deeper. Golden still hasn't proven anything either way. It's his 3rd year, it's time to SEE results. NOT HYPE

Kirby will play hard just like Eddie Johnson did...until Kirby gets kicked off the team....

2013 golden casualty:

Raphael Kirby

I say 5 guys get kicked off the team in 2013.....lol

also for Jeff driskell to come into the sec with zero experience and still go 363 plays for 2059 yards and 16 TD's and 5 INT's...is very respectable...Kevin Olsen would have been crushed

reality: yes....Matthew Thomas (fsu) was all over Kevin Olsen.....Vernon Hargreaves (Florida) looked excellent.

all the state of Florida top recruits out shined the rest of the players from around the country.....

Kevin Olsen could not compete with any of them....he couldn't take it.....flushed, rushed incompletions, sacks...tripping over his own feet and finally on the 7 yard line couldn't score and misses the snap and the ball is kicked 35 yards down field........

"he is Joe Montana in game day", lol....that's the best one so far..ya gotta love green peas

lets see now....randy shannon QB's -

jacory harris (4yrs) - 8826 yards / 70 TD's / 48 INT's
stephen morris (3yrs) - 4868 yards / 28 TD's / 18 INT's
eddy bridgewater (2yrs) - 5847 yards / 41 TD's / 20 INT's

or

al goldens QB's:

ryan williams (1yr) 137 yards / 1 TD / 0 INT
preston dewey (1yr) - ZERO
Grey Crow (1yr) - ZERO

don't think those guys will be able to catch Shannons boys......

question?...tell me again why we got rid of randy Shannon?, lol

I feel bad for any college kid who is away from home and is so hungry have to used a stolen credit card to purchase food...yet the NCAA rakes in millions of dollars for fat old dudes smoking cigars..

typo - teddy bridegwater....man he is on fire, too bad he isnt in green/orange and white.....he was but!

al that's why the kids can do no wrong.....its a complete hypocrisy......

dinners
gifts
excursions
VIP parties
"hit" pools

no body gets kicked off....plus all the illegal betting that goes with it...but al golden wants to punish good players....crazy

First of all anybody who uses the term green peas is a pure b!tch. 2nd Olsen's arm can't be any worse than J70 and he can't be any dumber.

Here's looking Up @ []_[] yet again, in yet another sport in yet another year... Year after year after year after year... Again and again and again.

but losing the snap twice and kicking the ball opposite the 7 yard line 35 yards down field on national TV is smarter? lol

green pea....what next, Olsen comes out in big red shoes and a painted face, lol

Loser gators celebrating. #9 ranking. Is that a title, titletown?

How about this title,

Champion of most chokes, most arrests, most inbreds and highest tooth:iq raio

And year after year?

How about beating us once in 25 yrs?

Furthermore, my slow, DNA challenged gator boy, what you forgot to mention is that the previous ranking showed the turds were 3 (now 9), while the Us prior ranking was 12 and now a 10.

Loser.

Blah Blah C'mon Gallo' Shannon should have been fired after the first season, like walking off the OB field the last game. That was enough in itself, but then the regression ever season. Never getting better, not showing any hope for the future. I'm not saying Goldie is the man, he has yet to prove either way. This year, progress or leave. Winning the ACC because the other teams have more losses is not winning it. It's beating those other teams. This program has been in the tank for a very long time, it won't heal in one season, but it would be great to see some consistency.
You have called for Goldie's head from day one, Shannon got 4 yrs. And never had consistency, anywhere. So why, would he be better.

Tell yourself what you want, what gets you through the day. but if you don't make the Sweet Sixteen your not in the Top 10, sorry. Polls only count during the season.

Can someone explain how someone like Gallo can be so stupid and I'm being polite.

He's not that dumb. No one's that dumb. He's invented an ignorant trolling persona to get people to talk to him on the internet.

Hugo chavez> gallo

Gallo claims teddy bridgewater is a shannon boy. Hahahahahahajajajajajajajajajajajajajajhahahahahah

Gallo had shannon coached teddy hed end up like jacorry, i.e washing the team jocks in canada.

Gallo: Bridgewater was all but wrapped up, then came "Goldy. Word on the street is he was actually better at NW than UL. RS had a pipeline from NW to UM. Then Goldy and crew came.

J12 was not a bad QB. I'll take him anyday over that overated Dorsey.

Gaylo sure is infatuated with Olsen , Kirkland , Randy Shannon. Go Canes

'Cool Cat that was probably the most ignorant statement you have ever made . Dorsey overated? what an idiot. nuff said.Go Canes

Yes Kevin Olsen had a horrible outting in the UA game. So did that offensive line. We all want to say Florida has the best talent of any state. Sorry not at the QB spot. All the NC Q B ,s at the U wasn't from the great state of Florida.

Dorsey overrated....dude you should never ever post agian....seriously....even Gallo would'nt say something THAT dumb.

Saw Kirby put up 390 in the bench press.

http://www.footballscoop.com/news/3967-former-cane-shares-candid-words-about-randy-shannon-era

Gallo asked "now why did we get rid of Shannon again? Lol"

Read the article below or click on the link above:

Former Cane shares candid words about Randy Shannon era

Former Miami (FL) defensive back Ryan Hill shared some candid words about the Randy Shannon era with the Miami Herald. Hill talked mostly about the ridiculous immaturity on the team, a lack of respect of authority, and drugs.  He believes that if the program is going to get back near the top of college football, then Al Golden is going to have to implement serious changes. Hill said, “In my early years at UM, there were guys who were freshmen who acted like adults — Jon Beason, Teraz McCray, Greg Olsen. When I was a senior last year, some sophomores and juniors acted like freshmen. Guys would do silly stuff like pulling their pants down, wearing crazy stuff.” (See photo of Jacory Harris below)“Guys would come late to meetings. They would schedule appointments and not show up or listen to iPods in class. I was always told by academic advisors to talk to [teammates]. Some kids got worse after they got here. People were purposely doing stuff to mock Randy Shannon or do their own thing.”“Coach Shannon tried to make sure guys went to class and presented themselves well. But as soon as he turned his back, they would do what they wanted.”In Hill’s eyes, there was a another problem that existed as well.“Coach Shannon put fear in guys not to do pot during the season. But I know there were a couple guys that beat the system. Nobody got caught. Now coach Golden has a problem on his hands, and he has to figure out how to handle it.Hill, a defensive back out of Tallahassee, played in 49 career games, starting 18.  Shannon led Miami (FL) to a 28-22 record in his four years as head coach.  The Hurricanes were 16-16 in ACC games.  After losing to South Florida in the final game of the 2010 season, Shannon was relieved of his duties as head coach.

It’s pretty clear that the moron posts on this thread/site and other Canes football blogs are courtesy of Gator criminals that have access to computers from prison.

Canes fans take heart…if not for the University of Florida’ athletic programs, more specifically the football program, hundreds of dangerous criminals would be roaming the countryside freely. Thanks to the Gators most anytime there’s a murder, rape, armed robbery, etc. we know precisely where to look first, starting with the Gator’s current football roster.

Jump in Ur wayback machine and let us know the last time, in any sport, U finished any team season ranked ahead of the Gators ? The last time U beat the Gators in anything? Football, by 20+ easily. Basketball, by 20+ even easier... Baseball, 1 outta 17... 1 fer 19 U chUmps. Ur not even Rival worthy. That is all.

GO LADY CANES !!!

the troll on troll tirades are the reasons I stopped coming here. Nice to check in and see nothing has changed...

cool cat -you black panther wanna be. Infact thats an insult to the black panther movement. You too dumb.

Youjust still angry because Dorsey as a freshman beat out Kenny Kelly (Thank God!)

Ken Dorsey in all surveys is considered UM;'s all time favorite QB. His record speaks for itself. Took the U to 2 national championships and infact should have been 3, if not for the mafia called the BCS. Lost only 2 games as a starter. was 3-1 in bowls.

All great QBs are surrounded by greatness and playmakers. Montana had Rice, Taylor and Craig among others. Marino had Clayton and Duper. Even Tebow was surrounded by great players. But Dorsey's genius was to play within his abilities- he didnt try to make those in-traffic slants or try to thread needles in the red zone, or try to throw 50 yard lobs up for grabs (like JacorryHarris). He got the ball to the play makers and when it counted!.

Congratulations Kenny Dorsey for your election to the UM Sports Hall of Fame. We true canes will always love you man. And thank you for the ship!

Dunno, Pig, over the last decade, the Canes are 2-1 vs. Gatr trash.

The cobbler's children have no shoes. Big mouth trailer maggots can't beat the Canes straight-up. You have to beat up on the Furman's and UL-Laf's and the horrible SEC hoops to then say Gatr Trash is better than the Canes.

But head to head? Nahhhhhh, Pig. YOu are a fat flatulent slob. Say that 5 times fast. First take the butter out of your mouth.

Must be another slow day in the trailer park - are you finished with your sister, I mean your wife, yet Jethro a/k/a Jim Gallo? It's time to make some farm animals happy Jethro. Perhaps you and your inbred sister can go shopping at Walmart for some new wheels for your home, I mean your trailer. I know that Miami is the #1 ranked academic school in the State, but I thought that at the very least they would teach basic math in that infested turd swamp a/k/a Gaynesville; but I see by the posts of certain inbred Gaytor trolls here that I am mistaken. Otherwise, why would these mental midgets post stuff about baseball when they have ZERO championships in baseball and since 1973 Miami has been one of college baseball's elite with 23 College World Series appearances,[1] winning four national championships (1982, 1985, 1999, 2001) and advancing to the NCAA regionals a record 40 consecutive years? I still believe that 5 championships (really should be 7 but 2 were stolen by referees) is greater that 3? I know your edumacation at Florida was lacking, but comon' man!!!! These Gaytor fools are funny, and funny looking too! Only a loser Gaytor troll would waste his time posting on Miami's blog, but it's called P... Envy, or redheaded stepchild syndrome, always looking up to your older brother... get over it Jethro and leave those farm animals alone.

Cool Cat I have a challenge for you.. Read that post that you wrote again and look at yourself in the mirror. Yes you are smiling because it is the most idiotic piece of trash you have ever written.
How could anyone compare Dorsey with j12? (the Heisman wannabe, and QB that couldn't score from the 2 yard line.)You would take him and his pink bow tie to where?

Are you kidding me????????? Comparing him with Dorsey one of the best QB's from the 'U' is similar to looking at a Porsche and comparing it to a Pinto?. ridiculous.

You imply that since Coach G is white he could not have the "pipeline" because color of skin predicated this pipeline. That is nothing but a POS, and you know it. Coaches recruit on talent, desire, skill, attitude, work ethic, personality and a host of other traits you would never understand..to bring this discussion to an implied skin color bias is an insult to you and to people reading this board.

You are edging close to the stupidity of Gallo.
You don't want to go there.
Go 'Canes

who is Ryan hill specifically talking about on the 1st string 2010 team? Give me some names....

2010 - randy Shanon's pot smokers

total offense - 5477 #31 national & #1 ACC
total defense - 4199 #22 national & #3 ACC

2011 - al golden

total offense - 4533 #70 national & #7 ACC
total defense - 4319 #45 national & #6 ACC

2012 - al golden

total offense - 5282 #37 national & #5 ACC
total defense - 5837 #116 national & dead last ACC

advise to golden...have your team smoke pot while wearing Ipod headsets....anything is better than #116 defensive ranking out of 120 total in NCAA
