FORMER UM linebacker Eddie Johnson has signed to play at HInds Community College in Mississippi

UM linebacker Eddie Johnson was a talent waiting to break out in a big way. Actually, he had begun to break out already in his redshirt freshman season in 2012.

Unfortunately, from what I'm told by insiders, he began hanging out with the wrong crowd, and got himself in trouble that UM didn't want to touch.

He's now officially a Hinds Community College Eagle, said his new head coach, Gene Murphy.

"He'll be enrolled for the summer session and start practice in August,'' said Murphy, who also serves as the athletic director at Hinds CC in Raymond, just outside Jackson. "We're excited about it. My evaluation of him is that he's a sideline to sideline guy and he knows how to play the game.''

Other UM players who played at Hinds include first-round draft pick Jerome McDougle in 1999, a defensive end. At the same time, former UM DE Andrew Williams played there.

The difference: McDougal and Williams played at HInds first, then transferred to Miami.

"We've had about 50 guys who have played in the NFL after starting out at HInds,'' Murphy said.

In 2012, the Eagles had a disappointing season, starting the preseason ranked sixth in the nation but ending 4-5.

"We fell off the cliff,' Murphy said.

This past season, Johnson was fourth in team tackles, while playing only eight games. Suspensions plagued him. He had 59 tackles, a sack, an interception and three forced fumbles.

Here's hoping his trouble is in the past.

Calvin....I get where your coming from...it sucks to lose a guy like EJ. But...the 80's are long gone brother. There is no way of replicating that era....first and foremost because of technology. Recruits have OPTIONS at this point in the game. All you need is a computer to understand that. In regards to EJ, Paul, Finnie.....sure....perhaps things would have been swept under the rug back in the day....TODAY....not possible.....again....technology. It is SO simple to "put something out there" via Twitter or Facebook or whatever to where it gets difficult to "keep it quiet" or "cover it up". So....of course the word will get around asap in regards to our players if they screw up....they now are held accountable for their actions. But....the "silver lining" in the sky for a place like The U....is that....there is so much talent around us and in Florida that we can easily tap into it to fill a spot. So...yes...sucks EJ and Paul is gone...God bless them....but....God bless a guy like Figs who is here to work hard and POSSIBLY able to be as good OR better then EJ. Why can't we look at it that way as well?

"there is so much talent around us and in Florida that we can easily tap into it to fill a spot."

Problem for U delUded clUck is that FSU, UF and the rest of the SEC are the ones tapping into that talent pool and leaving U clUcks out.

EJ would have to sit out a year if he went to a D1 program. Since he already burned his redshirt, he would waste a year of playing time. He will go big time next year when he will be a fourth year junior.

Hey Calvin your seletive memory has kicked in. Your quoting JJ but you have not mentioned that JJ also said AG was the right man for the job.Go Canes

Sucks to be U...I can assure you I'm a proud and HAPPY Cane fan....our trophy case is stacked with relevance and championships...It will be again. If anyone is grasping for straws its Turd fans....they CRING every time they turn the TV on and don't see Timmy in the huddle....haha..."oh my, where is he". The U is stacked once again....offense off the charts....just like it was in the 80's....all our skill guys from South Florida (Dorsett, Waters, Johnson)who will put points on the board....great QB....defense needs to prove itself. Other then that UFelony and Semenholes will get some athletes as well....all good.

The Turds will lose September 7....mark my words. They are always lousy in the beginning of the season...will be a home game for us....we will be to loose and jacked at the same time....pressure on them....not us.

Semenholes....wow....blow your load....redshirt freshman is now the second coming of Charlie Ward...barf...this kid will get a rude awakening when under pressure for the first time in real game. Will he be good eventually....FOR SURE....but initially...like throwing a deer to the wolves.

Calvin shouldn't be quoting anybody.. He makes up quotes like saying that Donna Shalala said that "UM was recruiting a different kind of athlete" and Ed Reed saying "hell naww dogg, I'm a veteran".

This isn't the 80's cAlvin, players are held accountable now a days. Just look around college football. Guys get arrested and it's all over the internet and ESPN. That's just the reality of this day and age. Get over it.

coke & cherry, it has nothing to do with a new era, it just has everything to do with this administration kissing buttox for far to long to try and appease the media and the nation and be accepted in the main-stream. If what you said about technology as being the problem, ask oscar cryer how much he cared about technology, his only focus was national championships, everything else was secondary. At the same time a football coach has the responsiblity to help groom alot of these young players, if goldie thinks kicking out redshirt freshman, True sophmores and incoming freshman is the method, he'll learn real quick how far behind the power curve he'll be in this state and the nation.

Yeah we know we're at UM and everything gets magnified but no need in trying to justify to the world that we got good kids, they're never going to see us that way no matter what so who cares. Just do what's best for the football program and the school and get back to winning games.

That's why i got respect for coach jim tressel, he wasn't going to sell his players out to try and keep his job, he tried to protect them and deal with it his way, didn't work, so he took the fall, and dumb no-goodel thinks he's doing a good thing by trying to punish guys who leave college and go to the pro's, he's an idiot. I'm glad we haven't heard from that clown for a while now, the quieter he is the better.

Everything you are saying is speculation. You have no clue how to produce a national championship any more than the rest of us do. But I think just as all coaches do AG has a plan and course he wants to take and if it works great if it doesnt then he will be gone but it is his team right now and his job to lose. We are not going to feed his family or pay his mortgage so I believe he has the right to guide his career in the way he thinks is his best chance at success. I know all the negative people dont think so but he wants to win as bad or worse than we want him to , if he loses nobody wins . Go Canes

Where you're wrong is if coach goldie loses, than that's a win for our defense and team. Cause no new coach coming in would keep clown 117th. Another point where you're wrong is, the fans do help pay for everything you said goldie pays for, unless the ponzi schemer is paying em.

The championship formula at UM hasn't changed, goldie can either follow the blue print or stay at 117th trying to follow another blue print!

Right now at 13 & 11, he might want to start looking at that proven blue print a whole lot more!

Christion Bello wrote a great article on Spring football.
This highlights the fact that we as fans are entertained by the machinations of players, the team competition, and the Coach speak that keeps us pumped up. However the real deal starts when the team plays that first game. That is the reality of evaluating and critiquing. Everything else up until that time is fan entertainment.
The serious analysis begin on that first day.

Alvina the Championship at the 'U' has changed. Different styles, media, facilities, and Coaching techniques have progressed. One can never follow a blueprint that does not evolve. You can't play 1980-90 College ball now. It would not work in this era.
Coach G is adjusting and building an UPDATED and MODERN blueprint called the PROCESS.
Go 'Canes

Calvina:
You need to watch Coach Solly and his speech to the team.
He said "The only thing I am about is doing the RIGHT thing, and WINNING" "Take Care of your business on and off the field".
He did not call Edgerin James up front to talk about his skills. He called him up to talk to him about being a GOOD person both on and off the field, and one of his Most respected people both in and out of football.

This says it all for me.

It is totally self explanatory.

ERGO....Coach Golden is doing exactly that. Show up, take care of your business, be respectful, disciplined, work hard to improve, and respect your team, Coaches, and School and everything will make you Champions.

One of the Best Motivation Speeches that I have seen, and it could be used and adapted for anything. Your job, life, and relationships.
Carry yourself with dignity and purpose, and good things will happen.

Great stuff.

Not once did he say. Coddle trouble makers, try to smooth over disturbances, put up with non class attendance, or be a thug.
He said carry yourself with Respect, and Respect others, Coaches, the team, and the Community..

The law of the jungle epitomized by Ed Reed ( a future Hall of Famer) years later who remembered the poem says all of the above.
It never leaves you .
It is ingrained in your psyche.
Look at that speech twice and let the words sink in..
Go 'Canes.

Calvin is too ignorant for that speech to sink in. He still calls onfrio "clown 117th" like he was the DC of Colorado's defense who finished 117th in defense. He makes up stuff like stats and quotes to try to validate "his" point.

Back to football.
Living in TN,m I'd had the opportunity to see one of our new recruits, Corn Elder play both football, and basketball. He was AllState in both.
I'll say right now he is Duke Pt 2, a gifted RB with great moves and NO FEAR.

You'll LOVE this guy.

This is my first time in this blog's comments in over a year and this is the conclusion that I have come to already...Jim Gallo is one of the dumbest mfers I've ever seen. That is all.

There they go again, dumb and dumber, Gallo and Calvin. Neither one knows anything about football, coaching or, even life. There are some really talented kids out there that just cannot be coached because they have been told, since Pop Warner, football that they are good, and that they can do anything because of their talent. Unfortunately, when they get to college they are expected to go to class, be model citizens and be good football players, which is hard for them because they have been given everything up to that point in their life. So, when they get to somewhere, like the U, they try to get away with being like they were in high school, which doesn't work in most cases. Unfortunately Calvin and Gallo are the types that would continue letting these kids get away with everything, not hold them accountable for anything just because they can play football. And, as I have seen in their writing, they don't sound like they even graduated from grade school, let alone high school, and definitely not college. As it was said in the movie Forrest Gumph, "stupid is as stupid does".

You know Golden really does care about these kids. So those of you talking smack need to look closer. That said, it's not easy adjusting to college d-1 ball. UM has a problem with hazing, wild kids with freedom for the first time like every college in this country. Not to mention many kids coming to paradise from small towns. South Beach, the Keys and the Grove bread trouble. The boys need to stick together and watch each others back. Golden will get the job done. Wait and see. Great depth, great recruiting effort and even good walk ones to boot. An impressive spring game. Go Canes!
