Lewis' recovery ahead of schedule

Even though watching the replays of his season-ending ankle injury last fall at Georgia Tech might induce others to feel sick to their stomachs, Hurricanes receiver Malcolm Lewis said he doesn't cover his eyes or even wince in disgust when he sees it.

According to the sophomore standout from Miramar High, he's taken the video of his pain and suffering and used it both as a learning tool and as motivation when he fully recovers to keep playing the game the way he always has.

"I watch it and see what I could've [done] to prevent the injury," Lewis said Tuesday -- about a month since he began individual work and route running on his own.

"I should have kept my feet chopping instead of letting it sit in the ground and roll... It was just a football play -- fighting for extra yardage. Something tragic happened. But there's nothing you can do. I'm still going to be the same player, fight for extra yards every time."

Last week UM coach Al Golden called Lewis' return "a medical miracle." Truth is, Lewis said, he's about a month ahead of schedule. Doctors first told him at the end of September it would take him about eight months before he would finish rehab.

He said while his teammates have been practicing this spring he's been lifting light weights while gaining strength back in his ankle. He said he's progressively been lifting heavier weights over the last few weeks as his ankle strength has improved.

"It felt weird [at first]," Lewis said of running routes at the start of camp. "Now that things have been going on and on I've been feeling better."

He said he expects to be fully cleared for contact next month and ready to go in the fall.

"It's a blessing just to be back on the field and doing what I can," Lewis said. "[Doctors] didn't know it wouldn't be happening this fast. I shouldn't be running this quickly. I should be rehabbing right now. But my leg is feeling stronger.

"I'm just going to try to pick up where I left off, do the best I can."

> Golden said defensive end Dyron Dye has an Achilles injury, but didn't rule him out from returning this coming season.

Calvin....it comes with the 300 page binder on why I am good for UM....no scholarships unless you go to camp...even sports illustrated wrote an article on that and said it was hurting UM recruiting....they specifically said that dade county recruiting would not react well to that demand....but I have grown used to goldens 24/7 press conference and damage control....

the kirkland/booker T created a firestorm and these kool aid drinkers pretend it didn't happen....lol

rofl, i forgot about the binder and the "destination job". goldie said sonny odogwu is in the mix at tackle. I got a question, if they're planning on moving malcome bunche on the inside, who's spot is he going to take, brandon linder or feliciano. I do know that it's going to be hard for one of these tackles to keep ereck flowers off that field, that man's mindset is to straight dominate.

The one thing that's for sure, we're going to raise coach goldie or he'll roll out. What i don't understnad is, why is coach goldie saying "Fsu & the gaytors only signed 1 player from Dade County, and they get a free pass" lol, when i first heard it i think goldie thought the reason it got quiet cause was because he thought he made a good point, but i don't think he understood he was getting looked at like, dawg, don't nobody care about who Fsu & the gaytors signed, they're DADE County numbers are suppose to be low one is in tralierhassee & the other is in jortsville, you're the one that's here.

Anytime you gotta start trying to justify why you didn't get players from the hometeam by trying to throw out stats, you already know you done made a boo-boo.

"Coaches would say, 'Don't tell anyone where you got it from,' " Blanc told Roberts.

McNeil told Roberts he had a meeting with then-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, now Florida's coach, in 2007.

"I had no clue what it was about because I'd never directly asked him for anything," McNell told Roberts. "He slid about $400 over to me. He went into a drawer and gave me money and said, 'Is this enough? Is this good?' And I said, 'Yeah, I'm good.' "

Gallo, what's going to happen muschump regarding these serious allegations?

first of all UM baseball has lost it to FSU since 2008....they have twice as many players in the major league than UM.....another pathetic decline in UM sports.....Morris needed to go a long time ago...

the reason Florida/fsu dont have a lot of recruits in sfl is because all the top Florida recruits are not in dade/broward.....of the top 50 only 11 are from dade/broward.....the majority are going to florida....of the 11 from dade/broward only 3 are going to UM.....another pathetic stat....

Gallo has the worst case of selective memory ever. That combined with the second worst case of stupidy known in the free world really makes for some humorous reading , it's hilarious ,thanks Gallo. Go Canes

calvin come on man, It was plainly written that the STREAK of regional years will most likely end this year. FSU is only a few years behind, and they will pass miami on the record amount of years going to a regional. As far as national championships, Martin may never win one. But that doesn't make the state of miami baseball any better, morris is done. Morris doesn't recruit any more, and Artega might have been a great pitcher, but he can't coach them up. It seems UM gets a freshman who is lights out, then drops off, that is coaching, or lack of. Read before you type

Auburn is in serious trouble- Muschump to be investigated. YOu mean the SEC is dirrrty? Nooooooooooooooooooooo! Really?

U can never have enough quality offensive lineman..I support Golden but the fact is I have to win at least 9 games this year and make a decent bowl game..They can do ot but it will be very difficult if tje defense plays like last year

Couple of points-

Jim Morris is spent. He can no longer coach here. he cannot recruit. He cannot game coach. He is stale, old, unimgainative and his time has passed. The U needs to move on. This cannot go on. UM baseball is too proud. Second only to football. Morris has worn his welcome by at least 6 years and there has been absolutely ZERO progress. He always has excuses (early draft entrees, injuries etc) which are not unique to Miami. Blake james: If you have any concern for Um baseball you would move in another direction. Morris cannot continue this circus

Auburn is in serious trouble- so is Muschump. But the more information comes out about the Miami investigation, the dirtier the NCAA appears. Whatr gets me is the arrogance with which these "investigators" and Emmert proceed. They have no humility nor are willing to see whats in front of their eyes in their zeal to get Miami. Their entire lives circle around a "GOTCHA" MOMENT. THATS ALL THEY LIVE FOR AND THEY WILL STOP AT NOTHING AND WILL NOT SEE THE WHOLE PICTURE NOR LOOK AT THE NETIRE PICTURE. That Ameen Najjaf - what a clown For someone to actually regularly text Nevin Sghapiro in jail proves my point- These people are either completely clueless or just as dirty as that dirt ball ponzi schemer. The UM case must be dismissed. It is a fraud from top to bottom!

NCAA will not drop this case.....no matter what glazier says in his response.....the NCAA will make UM challenge them in court rather than dismiss this case....no way at this point...

the NCAA will pick its poison...better to hold the line with UM rather than give in....the rest of the NCAA will be up in arms and the NCAA has cases still in court....all those cases could be jeopardized.....no change....NCAA ,moves forward....

we don't need a small OL.....we need a quality QB to replace Morris...that is the immediate need.....

Roberts previously worked at the New York Times and Sports Illustrated and was the lead writer of the 2009 report that exposed numerous MLB steroid users including prominant New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.

UPDATE I – 9:45 p.m.: Since the report was published, three of the players quoted within the piece have since denied that the story is true. “Man this article is outrageous and isn’t true. The media will do anything for a juicy story smh #sad,” tweeted Mike Blanc, McNeil’s former roommate. “The one thing that is quoted by me is what I said, no more no less..END OF STORY,” wrote Daren Bates on his Twitter account. Neiko Thorpe was even more matter-of-fact. “While I spoke to Selena Roberts about Mike I have just read her article & not only am I misquoted but my words are very out of…context. We didn’t talk about NCAA violations or recruiting. I’m proud 2 have played at Auburn & the opportunities it gave me,” he tweeted.

Much to do about nothing. Cane fan why U get so excited about anything gator, specially if it is negative made up stuff like this?
Could it be U trying to deflect from your real violations and troubles?
NCAA is looking at U, not the Gators.

* right, so now there are no recruits in Miami-Dade and Broward, that's why UF and FSU haven't been recruiting them. And to Al Golden's point that he has more Florida players than the 2001 championship team? You have no response.

Posted by: Jim Gallo | April 04, 2013 at 09:33 AM

* Yea, who needs a five star offensive lineman, what a stupid signing by Golden, huh? We need a new quarterback, forget that we already have four star prospect Kevin Olsen, Golden recruited him so he's terrible.

* What a surprise that Jim Gallo has an ignorant and negative opinion on UM's NCAA case. What a shocker.

top florida recruit totals out of 50

florida - 11
fsu - 8
UM - 4

Please golden did a lousy job of recruiting....now we get a small OL (285) when we could have had a 6'5" 333 OL kirkland rated the #24 player in the state....

well see next year what happens....

Gallo.....How does it feel knowing the head coach for the team you root for was Auburns bag man?

I could care less....all I care about is UM beating fsu/florida....if that happens I'll reconsider my opinion of golden and get on board.....if he looses those 2 games, he might as well just get on the next plane out of miami....

its time to fish or cut bait...

look.....I am good with all of it....alumni dinners for players, gifts, "hit" pools and excursions to exotic places...all of it including guns in the dorms.....

no player can do no wrong....just like the old days....sorry

* Hahaha, Kevin Olsen sucks. Yea, because Golden recruited him. You're a sad man Jim Gallo.

Posted by: Jim Gallo | April 04, 2013 at 10:57 AM

* Right, you're a college graduate. Who can't spell "lose". Makes sense.

Posted by: Jim Gallo | April 04, 2013 at 11:00 AM

* Stealing laptops, guns in dorms, no problem. As long as Al Golden isn't coach at the time.

Free dinners? TMZ COACH!!!!

Posted by: Jim Gallo | April 04, 2013 at 11:04 AM

* Randy Shannon's players are all going to be gone eventually.

Do yourself and everyone else a favor and stop pretending to be a Miami fan. Go follow Arkansas and drool over your boyfriend.
