Coach Al Golden on Hurricanes D: "The biggest thing was to not change...''

I watched and listened to Al Golden as part of ESPN's "Car Wash'' today, and I was impressed by his answer to Samantha (Steele) Ponder, when she asked him...

"Defensively I know you wanted to make some changes this last year. What are the things you think need to change in order to get the defense where it needs to be?"

Golden's response:

"I think the biggest thing was to not change, was just to take all the young kids, the 14 or 15 freshmen we played over there and just to quiet their minds down, settle them down a little bit. I felt different about the defense in the spring – there was a calmness, they were communicating more. And then of course getting [defensive tackle] Curtis Porter back and then giving everybody another year in the weight room.

"[Linebacker] Denzel Perryman grew up on the stage for us, played at 208 and then 212. He’s 243 now. [Linebacker] Jimmy Gaines is 240. [Linebacker] Alex Figueroa is 238. [Defensive end] Anthony Chickillo is another guy who played for us at 45 and 50. He is now 275. So those kids had to grow up and were forced to play before they were ready. Now, they’re settled in, they know the system and we’re excited about who we have coming back on defense."

The Canes ranked 116th (of 120 FBS teams) in total defense last season, allowing an average of 486.4 yards per game. They ranked 112th in rushing defense (217.9 yards allowed per game), 102nd in pass defense (268.5), 105th in tackles-for-loss and 113 in sacks.

We'll see this season if Golden's patience pays off and if the D-linemen get free to attack the quarrterback. That will make all the difference to a team that appears to be offensively gifted.

Calvin you silly fool-

Yeah Shannon knew what he was doing, like sitting back and letting Krenzel sit in the pocket for 2 hours, UM rushes 2 or 3 at most, on 4th down and 13, knowing full well we had big daddy and others that he could have to rush him- That and the phantom flag cost the U the national championship. And Clarett may have gotten 47 but the other rb also had a fair game.

STFU please you clueless jive turkey

This is like the evergaldes in August at 3pm. You hear the storm, you see the storm clouds approaching, then you experience the full brunt of the storm.

Oh, it's coming. Be sure of that.

SOUP: Now doesn't THAT game bring back memories of "The JSQ" in her prime? LOL
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

This idiot has no CLASS WHATSOEVER!

Posted by: Urban Meyer

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hear Ye, Hear Ye. I absolutely concur, that that SOUP is a bloody FACADE and has NO class.

Chit, that SOUP gets " OFF " when he KICKS off distractors from HIS blog sphere. hUh

In other words, that SOUP and his canespace ILK don't take to kindly, to opposing Hurricane viewpoints and what not.

Matter of fact, those LOUTS at the canespace be still yapping CRAP, about their BELOVED Marky Mark, and how Miami's defense is going to be No.40 and higher this season. Eh. What say.

No wonder that mountain cane WHELP has gone over to the DARK SIDE of the Miami opinion realm and what not.

D just back from a spit roast with galloinda and lady calvina. They're still finishing up, but will report in soon.

preview:

1. RS was great , just didn't get support
2. Need press coverage
3. LBs need to weigh more or less (they disagree)
4. JH was a great quarterback
5. Shula was below average coach in terms of super bowl wins

Oh, hell, you know them all.

^^^^^^^^^^

Let me help you out, moron.

Sagaciously. Eh, What say. dUh. hUh. and what not.

Please, your village needs its idiot. Go back quickly.

Seems like the new dummy, D, is trying to place himself between the big and little spoons you 2 make.

Bummer about the Driskell appendix. Built in excuse for you dolts.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually mountain cane LOUT, anyone who absolutely states that Shula senior is the NO.1 all-time N.F.L. head coach, is beyond stupid and be a FUNCTIONAL, educated IDIOT.

Heck, other than ESPN's " fan poll. " Two other NFL sites listed THE DON No. 6 and No. 6, in the all-time N.F.L. head coach category.

I guess those two polls PENALIZED mountain cane LOUT's boy, for ONLY winning two championships in THIRTY-FIVE seasons and what not. LOL hUh

mountain cane LOUT and LIKE-MINDED cane good ol' boys, had ANCESTORS whom bloody BELIEVED the earth was F-L-A-T at one time or another. hUh

That's WHY these BOZO's be yapping bout' their BELOVED Marky Mark, and how Miami's d-unit is going to reach the Top 40 percentile and what not. When it comes to overall team defense. dUh

Dear spit roast D,

I said shula was an above average coach in terms of wins per year coached. He is, but ur probably too dumb to be able to do the simple arithmetic that shows that to be true.

You're the moron who introduced the no.1 all time line.

dUh, do you think so IDIOT!!

Chit, Miami's WEAKEST area was on the defensive side of the ball.

So it don't take no major college football Einstein, to go hard after prep defensive players.

Now get back to your Cane ILK at the canespace/eoth!

Posted by: mountain cane | July 31, 2013 at 02:17 PM

Again, that mountain cane WHELP will fit in very nicely at the canespace.

Seeing that both mountain cane LOUT, and his canespace MINIONS, are EXPERTS at LYING and spreading FALSIFICATIONS! When it comes to Hurricane football matters and what not. hUh

I'm guessing that mountain cane LOUT is a voting Republican. Seeing that mountain cane WHELP is an expert, in the DARK art of LYING and what not. Eh. What say.

Bon jour et Bonsoir

D,

How was it between Lady Calvina and galloinda? Did you talk player weights?

i dont have an issue with what al said for 2 reasons. One he is right he was playing true freshman and redshirt freshman all across the defense. The lacked experiance and depth. That kills teams. The team is gonna be improved just from experiance factor. No school that plays as many freshman as miami has success on d. It never happens. This team can take a huge step forward just based on knowing where to be and talking to each other when they play. Will they be a top 10 d ? probably not but they can be ranked in the top 30.

Mountain Cane--

I saw the interview where Teddy Bridgewater talked about his 50lb plus weight gain from his freshmen year to his sophomore year at Louisville.

Thank goodness we have Gallo/Calvina to set Teddy straight and advise him he has blown it and will never be a good college QB, because he's not playing at his ... wait for it ... "natural weight" ... and because of the weight gain he is now one of those "slow guys".

Here's a thought Gallo/Calvina ... try to go more than, say, two hours without making a moronic statement that is immediately refuted. One of my favorites is Al Golden is not capable of recruiting the 305 and Tim Harris and the Booker T kids will have nothing to do with the man or the Canes. LMAO!

When you consider that the offense had just as many new starters and fresh faces as the 'efense, the isn't any other excuse other than incompetence for why we saw the worst 'efense ever on display last season!

Check this out, the offensive staff got raided in the off season but Goldie tried to give his boy away and COULDN'T!!

Consider also that when the Mac staff came here they came with 'efensive staff INTACT but got progressively WORSE! Otoh the offensive guys had NEVER worked together had has for the most part show promise!

Calvin said it best, if you want to know what the Mac side of the ball idea of what a defense looks like look no further than what their mentor al groh fielded at gtech. Btw he was ish canned in the middle of the season and before you know it they were shutting down Marquis Lee and crew! Go figure.

hUh. What say. Sagaciously.

Fake Nashvillecane,

Hint: Everyone stopped reading @ Calvin said it best, because, well, because it is simply not possible, given what he has to work with.

its not excuses when you have a talent pool that was devoid of players who were coached thank to Shannon. Yeah we had lots of star recruits, it doesn't do a bit of good if they're fat, lazy slobs who don't practice or work out hard in the offseason. Not mentioning names but one of those idiots left school early to not get drafted. The proof of this is all the hurricanes 4th through 7th round picks going back to the time of coker who are starters and star players in the nfl. Some of these guys weren't even playing the right position. Golden took two years of beatings on the recruiting trail because of a fake scandal and an ncaa with an axe to grind with our university. That's aight, I am in no means sold with Coach D and after watching the game at duke last year I was tempted to call for his head. Give the guy this year, the players have actually been coached into his system and have been going through the conditioning programs. If the D is any lower than 55th ranked at the end of the year he should be fired. As it stands now we're gonna score about 70 points a game. Maybe we should change our name to the Miami red raiders just for this season ;)

.

How is that even the least bit impressive ? Maybe Golden should hire a Hypnotist and Yoga instructor to get their heartrates down to 30 beats a minute and play in a state of Semi-consciousness too... Football is a game of high energy played during borderline maniacal frenzy state of mind. Especially on defense. NOT a game of slowing things down in order to speed up.

Can we all agree that what Golden said would NEVER, and I mean NEVER be uttered out of Jimmy Johnson's mouth ? Just too much philosophy Penn St. and Joe Paterno for my liking. And frankly I thought it was a typo or misquote after what I've seen on the defensive side of the ball the last two years. This year better be far better or my 28 years of holding 8 season tickets are through until we get back to the real Cane way.

***"the 14 or 15 freshmen we played over there and just to quiet their minds down, settle them down a little bit."***

You've got to be kidding me.

He said slow their minds down not their bodies. That was the dumbest comment ever. If you had half a brain you would know he was talking about their conception of the game. The ability to make decisions at a face pace comes from experience. This is where the expression comes from of the game "slowing down"

If your going to be a troll, troll better.

"[Linebacker] Denzel Perryman grew up on the stage for us, played at 208 and then 212. He’s 243 now.

I Coached Denzel and still see him from time to time in the Grove and at C.G. High school. Folks I'm 6-1 barefoot. Denzel is 5-11 3/4's barefoot. Maybe 6-0 1/4 in shoes. To bulk him up to 245 is absolutely insane. He was a legit sub 4.7 to 4.60 flat forty kid and one of the best I ever saw from sideline to sideline. Only Vilma was better. There is no way he will keep up that stamina and speed carrying around two 20 pound York weight plates sewn into hip pads. Don't mistake weight gain for strenght. The 2 don't always go hand n hand. And no one that has ever gained that much weight so soon has ever gotten faster.

I want to like Golden, I reall y do. The guy came in and seemed to embrace the program the Cane way. I'm really afraid he's starting to splinter out and installing his Penn St. Joe Pa mentality and all with Donna Shalala's blessing. Especially the Choirboy stuff which AIN'T the Cane way.

To the idiots who think that because Golden responded that they have not changed anything on defense that they actually have not changed anything on defense:

To you think it is wise for a coach to alert all his opponents before the season starts as to the changes they have made so that their opponents can be prepared for them? No coach would be that stupid, which is why Golden's response is perfect. Of course, if the Gators want to prepare for the game as if the Canes will be running the exact same defense they ran last year, or even the same defense they show against FAU, I will be happy...

: Cane For Life | July 31, 2013 at 03:45 PM

^^^^^^^^

So what about the lazy entitled players on offense that were recruited by Shannon that some how Fisch and co were able to get a lot of production out of?

Morris, Herns, Hendo, Linder, ect?

Even if you threw out the fsu's , notre dame's, and kst's and just looked at the terrible to mediocre teams UM lined up against that would tell the Mac side of the ball is in over their head!

From Boston College to UVA, to Bethune Cookman, to NCST, to Duke the 'efense was flat out terrible!

And that's not even counting the games in 2011 where UM was leading late in the forth only to lose.

Sunny Dee go back and look at his 'defenses from UVA and Temple to now.

He plays the same all day er'day!

All of you morons, especially Tallycane that think the canes defense is going to get slower because they are getting bigger...WTF, are you guys serious? So all of the big linebackers and Defensive Ends at Alabama and in the NFL are slow?. What a bunch of Morons....

I guarantee that these guys are not only getting bigger, but are definitely getting much faster at the same time.

I am going out on a limb and saying that the Canes will go undefeated this season. Other than Florida and FSU, they have the perfect schedule to go 12-0. I don't think the Gators are a top notch SEC team this year, and Miami always plays the noles close. As bad as we were last year, we were in the game until the middle of the 4th qtr. I believe we knock the noles off this year, and if the NCAA doesn't screw us, we end up in the NCAA playoffs.

Take that and swallow it Gallo Garbage Breath-

Gallo:
My last was with your momma and sister.

It is well known that its far more likely for an offensive freshmen to have success than a defensive one. The defensive learning curve is much more complex.

So, does the Randy Shannon lover ignore the fact that the 2010 season was a train wreck. That team had some talent but horrible coaches. What about the 48-0 game? The difference between Shannon's 7 win season and Golden's 7 win season is expectations. Shannon's team was capable of so much more. Golden's team was predicted to only win four games because the talent was so bare but they exceeded and won seven. This year they will win ten at least.

Jaxcane

The underachieving, lazy, entitled freshman class of 2008 showed up in Gainesville with a new dc and held the raining heisman trophy winner and eventual national champs to 2 td's and a bunch of field goals.

The eventually national champs were lazy until their first loss. When ole timmy fired them up. But if we are being honest, we hung around in that game until it mattered. Then they had their way with us.

Not to mention, that defense wasn't playing 14-15 freshmen...

The defense will be significantly better than last years, just like coach golden said, they have matured in many ways and that is all that needs to be said. He supports his players unconditionally like the great man he is. I am an Alum and fan for over 50 years. bleed orange and green win or lose. I Do not have patience for people that throw garbage at our team, get off the site! Special times for Canes lie ahead, and it will be fun, Anybody who thinks Coach Golden is not the right guy apparently is clueless! My Love and Prayers for Deon's Dad and the entire Bush family!
Go Canes!

Brandon Harris, Spence, Forston, Regis, Robinson, Ojaomo all played tons that game/year.

And I'm not debating rather Shannon should be hc or not. But could you imaging him keeping pat nix around after abysmal performance after abysmal performance?

Hell he fired his friend Tim Waldon after one year!!!! And that was after traveling with 15-20 players on defense! Oh and they didn't finish 11?

Posted by: JaxCane | July 31, 2013 at 04:01 PM

Ur just a Golden slurrper. "Slow down the mind so the body goes faster." WTF are u talking about? There's never a time for thinking when the bullets are flying. You see and react and the body goes. You think and you're beat and your body is way outta position. Have you seen the holes that trucks could drive through? Have you seen the secondary 2 steps late missing angles and multiple tackles. Have you seen the safties plant two feet in the ground, slowing their minds down, and get tourched over the top? Have you seen the corners 12-15 yards off the ball so their minds can freaking slow down and then still get beat on 10 yards curls n slants for first downs or hitch n go's time and time again ? The problem is that the game is way too fast for many of our kids on defense that just aren't up to the Cane standard. FRESHMAN through SENIORS ! And the Coaches in charge of them is even worse. Thank God we play in the ACC and not the SEC. Cause the SEC kids ain't slowing down for jack$heet ever. Even in pratice. Hell, do are kids do mind slowing down exercises in practice so they don't have to "slow down" in games ! Name me 1 guy other than Denzel on Defense that will even get a sniff by the NFL scouts. Maybe a few D.B.s down the line but not one Front 7 guy other than #52 will even get drafted... Slow down their minds huh? They're dimwitted to begin with. Slowing them down would just make then retarded. But hey that's what they're Coached to do, just like all those bigger n slower scrubs like Penn State has done for 50 years.

Again, name 1 other than Denzel that is NFL worthy.

Be sure to slow your mind down so you will react quicker when you answer JaxAxCane.

As I mentioned earlier. That " gwp1616 " and mountain cane LOUT and their Cane MINIONS had distant relatives, whom bloody BELIEVED the earth was F-L-A-T!!!

Because as long as your BELOVED Marky Mark remains in Coral Gables, the Hurricanes will NEVER go undefeated!! Well, at least this season Miami will NOT win out during the regular season. dUh

Our Junior n Senior EXPERINCED D-Players are SLOW MINDED TOO !!!

We started 1 Freshman at Duke... ONE !

That's why we saw the WORST CANE DEFENSE EVER last year.

But it will get better because we aren't changing a thing and will continue to slow down their minds is Goldens grand plan.

The only thing you ever want slowed down on a football field is the Quarterbacks progression reads. THAT"S IT !

And that's all contingent on the O-Line and Runningbacks protection. PERIOD.

NEVER ON DEFENSE !

I don't know, maybe Goldie and Marky Mark's cherished " 3-4 " requires too much thinking, and not enough reacting, and FLYING to the pigskin. Eh. What say.

Because even during Miami's recent DARK AGES, the Cane " 4-3 " NEVER looked as ugly as last season. hUh

Yeah, yeah Goldie has reminded everyone the number of freshmen, which played significant minutes and what not. Yet, there was the last game against MIGHTY duke!

So much for an offense and or defense IMPROVING as the sseason progresses and what not.

^^^^^^^^^

do yourself a favor and stop using "and what not" in your posts. you sound like an ignorant douche. Oh.... wait.

And for everyone saying this team is getting bigger, faster, stronger, etc.

What do you think the teams UM plays this year are doing? Playing intramurals?

Last years squad was as close to 5-7 as they were 7-5.

And with the watering down of the schedule anything less than 9 wins would be troubling.

What's wrong with you people? How can you second guess The Great Golden One??
Don't you know this is all done as a strategy? The bit about not making any changes to the record setting defense that is. Changes have been made, you just don't get it. 5 of the better players have either graduated or been dismissed. Big change.
In their place we will count on a few select freshmen to produce big time for us.
The rest of the #116 crew have all bulked up and enjoyed another year of instruction from our defensive guru Marky Mark Onofrio. That is priceless!
Cheer up, our new and improved defense is about to be unveiled!

By the way, Florida's starting QB will absolutely be ready for 9/07/13!

And just imagine mountain cane Lout and like-minded Miami brUtes was looking forward to facing the MIGHTY gators without QB Driscoe-sp. dUh

Miami will play VANILLA on defense against F.A.U. So bloody wager the OVER's on Miami's home opener!! hUh

I swear, if Golden said the sky would be green and the grass orange tomorrow morning because God was a Cane fan, the majority of blind Cane "fanatics" would set their alarms for sunrise to see if it was true.

ROFL, This man can go to war by himself, "The strength of the pack is the wolf and the strength of the wolf is the pack"!

Who in here is dumb enuff to think coach goldie and clown 117th are actually holding defensively in practice, so what's really being said is, if he shows more to early we would've been ranked basically dead last. It's an insult to defense itself to say those 2 are running anything vanilla, than what was it during the regular season.

clown 117th doesn't change anything, the only blitz I remember seeing that seemed to actually work was against Fsu when jimmy gaines blasted e.j. manuel. Other than that, basically all year our blitzes we null and void.

Coach goldie doesn't know defense either, and by the way, to the idiots who are trying to use teddy bridgewater as an example of a college football player gaining weight, are yall that pathetic, does teddy b have to try and catch anyone, so his weight only matters for taking sacks, let's see how many people dzp get to this year, I can guarantee you dzp is not faster at 243 than he was at 212, and any moron that thinks so, stop posting and go and stick your head in the toilet.

We saw how much quicker 3g got last year at 265lbs, and jimmy gained was already not that fast to began with now he's added on more weight, this is the year when players raise their draft status. And keep trying to use Bama as the standard of what coach goldie is doing, it's not even close to comparing. The type of weight these guys are bing asked to put on in 1 year is stupid, if they put on 10 to 15 lbs each year their here that's one thing, but 20lbs and up in less than a year, that's to much stress on the joints.

See spence this year, his frame is not conducive to be 230lbs, he needs to play at 220lbs.

After much off-season posting, we have enough data to vote for the most clueless, opinionated, redundant and long-winded poster. The 3 candidates are obvious:

1. Dumb,dumber and D all in one
2. Galloinda
3. Lady Calvin

Everyone else tied for 4th.

Pls cast your vote.
