Former Canes coaches Larry Coker and Curtis Johnson part of new-look Conference USA

Hi everyone,

Andre Fernandez here covering the Conference USA Media Day in Irving, Texas.

The morning sessions, however, had a distinct UM flavor with former Canes coaches Larry Coker (Texas San Antonio) and Curtis Johnson (Tulane) in attendance.

Coker, who was proudly sporting his UM 2001 national championship ring, is in a much different coaching situation these days than he was at UM.

Coker

Coker is in his third season at the UTSA, which joins C-USA this season after a season in the WAC. The Roadrunners are still not a full FBS member school and bowl eligible until 2014.

UTSA went 8-4 and finished fourth in the WAC last season and Coker is 12-10 in his two seasons at a relatively new program that despite its infancy gets to play in San Antonio’s Alamodome (65,000 capacity) and averaged 38,000 in attendance over the past two seasons.

“I talked to Howard Schnellenberger before I got the job about building a program from scratch,” Coker said. “He said it’s one of the greatest things I’m ever going to do. But it’s definitely a challenge. I think the fertile recruiting environment in Texas and the Alamodome give us a big advantage.”

Coker talked about the differences between the high-pressure environment he coached at while he was with UM as opposed to the “everything’s brand-new” feeling at UTSA. In a market where the only other big-ticket sports team is the San Antonio Spurs, Coker said when it comes to football, the San Antonio fans have embraced the fledgling program.

“My athletic director said I’m on honeymoon right now,” Coker said. “We won eight games last year. In Miami, if you win eight games, you get fired. But that’s part of the pleasure of [coaching at UTSA]. It’s a tough task, but a good task.”

Coker, who turned 65 last month, has no plans on retiring soon, but hopes to see the program through to a point where it can establish itself competitively on an annual basis.

“I feel great and I love what I do and as long as I do,” Coker said. “I hope to stay. What I hope to do when I leave this is leave the program in great shape and [in a position] where they can really take the next step. I don’t have any illusions that we are going to be a national power while I’m the coach there, but I’d like our players to get a chance to play in a bowl game.

“I’d love to see these guys get that chance and to see good facilities built. Our practice fields and weight rooms we just put a half million into the whole weight room. We have a new lighted practice field on-campus. We didn’t have lights in Miami on practice field. Those are the things, I’d love to see continue to happen.”

Sitting at the Tulane table set across from Coker was his former assistant coach Curtis Johnson. Johnson was not sporting his UM bling Wednesday, however.

“I usually have my Super Bowl ring on one finger and national title ring on the other,” Johnson said. “My wife told me to wear my wedding ring to this so that’s what I brought to this.”

Curtisjohnson

Johnson, who is in his second year at Tulane, is coming off a 2-10 season and is preparing the team for its final season in Conference USA. Sitting across from Coker at Media Day, Johnson reflected on what he learned from his time at UM and what he still applies to his coaching at Tulane.

“We took a program on probation with the leadership of Butch Davis and Larry Coker and we were bad for one year. We started Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss and Dan Morgan and went 5-6 and were almost run out of town.

“But we built a program and once you do that, you develop toward winning a national championship.

“Miami had a great atmosphere, but I think the biggest mistake was not figuring out how to keep them in the Orange Bowl. When we walked on that field, we knew we’re going to win. That’s the kind of environment and culture you want to create and what we’re trying to build at Tulane.”

Johnson and Coker will coach against each other Nov. 9 when Tulane visits the Alamodome to take on UTSA. It will be a rare chance for them to face each other since Tulane is set to move to the American Athletic Conference in 2014.

“Larry’s like my dad so it’s going to be hard,” Johnson said. He’s got a tough, hard-nosed team. It’s going to be a competitive game and a big challenge.”

Exactly if u win 8 games u get fired ..... See ya golden/dnofrio

But now at um if u win 6 games and come in at #116 on defense u get a raise to over 2 million...... This is the newwwww miami, lol

Like i said before, it's clearly obvious a lot of people on here don't know their football and should stick to just watching the game even tho they don't understand what they're seeing. Any idiot that's dumb enuff to say we lost a game because our linebackers were to small in years past is a perfect example of what i call a bandwagoneer.

Miami never lost to any team because of having smaller linebackers, the only games we lost was because of having a pathetic offense and qb like frank costa who kept either getting 3 & outs or handing the ball right back to the other team. frank costa, the worst qb in UM history because he played with some of the best UM defenses who consistently gave him the ball back and he did nothing with it.

Also, some of you need to really stop posting your ignorance of football. multiple defenses are not needed, that's just for people who don't understand football, it's still 11 on 11, pressure the qb, and press the receivers and it won't matter what type of offense they're running, the problem is you got to many coaches now that don't understand the game and are just a bunch of copy cats off of each other. One reason i'm glad jedd fisch is gone is because i got tired of or offense doing that, "get under center, than back out and the whole offense looks to the sideline for the play" no need for all of that, just run the play.

The funny thing is, the offenses being ran today is like the offense that the Houston cougars ran back in 1991.

I see where MIGHTY U.T.S.A. draws bloody MORE fans to their home games, than the Canes. hUh

Yeah, yeah SoFla AIN'T exactly akin to the rest of the major college football nation. dUh SEE the TRI-counties of Southern Florida as an INTERNATIONAL, THIRD-WORLD enclave and what not. Eh. What say.

But then again, SoCal has become a bloody THIRD-WORLD, INTERNATIONAL neighborhood, and both U.C.L.A. and U.S.C. " easily " have STRONGER fan bases than the Hurricanes. hUh

In other words, the Rose Bowl WON'T be 2/3rd's EMPTY on game day/night. Eh. What say. SEE 30,000 or 32,000 fans for a Bruin or Trojan home game.

D,

Third World is a former colonial term and is no longer used. Developing Country or Area is the appropriate term now. By the way, based upon your writing/grammar skills, it appears that you may be from one of these so called "Third World Enclaves".

Gallo you idiot AG did not get a raise for winning 6 games and #116 on D he got it because he is smarter than you which apparently is not much of a task at all . And Calvin are you really trying to suggest that you know about football ? What a tool. Go Canes

Whatever, bUbba!!

Nonetheless, you obviously understand the point of moi's opinion. hUh Otherwise, you would've never REACTED so LAMELY.

And both SoFla and SoCal are DE FACTO " Third-World " enclaves. Akin to Mo-Town. dUh

Yeah, yeah you have Palm Beach County and what not. Eh. What say. It's a bloody shame, that VOLUNTEER HOOD' STALKER don't homestead in Palm Beach County!!

No matter how things played out with Coker once a Cane always a Cane. Johnson is right on. Not keeping the "U" in the OB and allowing the city to knock it down and build a useless baseball stadium was a complete travesty. City officials were on the take on this screw job for sure.

JRA: Your statement about travesty is a bit short: The travesty on Coker's team was that highly overrated Ken Dorsey. Put any QB on that team and he succeeds. Johnson, Portis, Joseph, Reed, that team was stacked and Coker nor Dorsey did a bit of playing.

Please do not respond to the Ken "7th round and the 49ers took me b/c I'm from Cali," Dorsey comment. Most on that team will be in Canton. But not KD. Guess why?

Heck, Ryan Collins, Kenny Kelly, Berlin, would have succeeded on that team. Coker didn't coach.

Calvin: Correct me if I'm wrong: Are you talking about the run and shoot offense run by Houston by in the day? If so, that was a breakthrough O,but U got to have the right combination of players to run it.

Correct me if I'm wrong: I'll take Costa all day over Dorsey. Outside of leadership, I still can't really figure out what Torretta had that Costa did not. Frank was hesitant at times, was slower than I thought, and U could argue that Costa was the weak link on that team.

For those of you that have screamed for Miami to get Dade-Broward and Palm Beach kids and are all giddy over having 15 of the 24 commits from those counties, get a BIG PICTURE Clue. All Golden is doing is putting chicken wire around average S. Fla. talent. 11 of the 15 recruits that have committed weren't even offered by Florida or FSU and in many cases not S. Fla. or UCF either... But you stole many from FIU, FAU and a ton of 1-AA teams is all.

So pound your chest and scream n holler all you want now, but when these recruits, like the majority of the last two years become upperclassmen and you are whinning, "Why can't these kids play?" you will now why. Much of the same from 2005-2012.

Arty and I warned you for years and we were right about Randy Shamwow and his Football Carnival. Except those teams had twice the talent. Now you are like little school boys starry eyed over Golden and his 500 page notebook and silver tongue... So basically you have an average coach that is a PR-Dream (Donna's PR-Dream)that is loading up on average talent compared to the former Mushmoufed average coach that at least brought in some ballahs...

Deja Vu is still in your future. Sure you'll win some games in a Conference as pathetic as the ACC. But the old skool Miami way is loooonnng gone...

So maybe you should actually listen to intelligent contributions from the likes of Gallo n Calvin. They are truth tellers providing constructive critcisim simply holding the Administration and Coaches accountable... You know, like you didn't do with Coker and Shannon? But when they left, you saw the light and trashed them for the exact reasons Arty and I told you. So get ready in 3 years to repeat the cycle because Miami just doesn't have the Jimmys n Joes to compete with ANY Top-15 Program right now.

Mediocrity has been your irrelevant 10 year past and that will continue as you will blindly accept it like the lil 1938 College Football Fan Hitler youths that you are... Hail Goldy !!!

.

HOLA ARTY !!! See you in 30 Days Brother... It'll be 4:20 SOMEWHERE !

We took a program on probation with the leadership of Butch Davis and Larry Coker and we were bad for one year. We started Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss and Dan Morgan and went 5-6 and were almost run out of town.
////////////////////////////////

Here's a guy that understood the atmosphere in Miami, like he said, "you will get run out of town" all these peasants slobbering over 13 & 11 goldie who got left a way more talent than Shannon was ever left, he'll be run out of town just the same if he keeps it up with these excuses, national championship or bust is the standard!

Literally LMFAO on the " peasants " and their BELOVED Goldie and Marky Mark.

And yes, the University of Miami, Florida Hurricanes AIN'T been a LEGITIMATE Top 15 program since the 2005 season.

Bloody au contraire to what canespace Cane bUbba's have to opine on the bloody matter. hUh

calvin: get ready......I'm already hearing the 2013 excuse "INJURES"......

When you think about it NCAA executes more sanctions that plays right into goldens hands.....he can then extend his tenure and be under the radar for another year.....this way he can enjoy coral gables and his wife can still shop at the village of merrick......

dnofrio will end goldens future at UM.....that is the plan if all goes well....a thrashing by floridas running game should be the tipping point with added pressure from the loss from a team that was expected to win against.

Funny.....more gators here than on thier blogs

Miami will be a top 15 program right after beating UF on September 7.

Al Golden, good guy, average Coach with a Penn State and Temple mentality...

Did u cane cluck dolts, in mass, actually reference "TEMPLE" and how he "turned" that program around, that didn't beat ONE team with a winning record in 3 years, as a comparison to how good Golden is as a Corch and Miami will be ?

"Look at TEMPLE and how good they were and watch how we'll be back." never said a keeping it real Miami Fan... Til now.

"I don’t have any illusions that we are going to be a national power while I’m the coach there, but I’d like our players to get a chance to play in a bowl game"

That is the lame attitude that Coker gave our players and the reason why we declined EVERY year he was here...How the hell can he tell his kids, don't have any illusions of being the best....freaking clappy!!!SMFH!!

Al Golden on an ESPN interview yesterday... "We started 15 different Freshman last year."

EXCuSES, EXCuSES, EXCuSES u ...

u've been starting too many Freshman going on a decade now?

just why is that ?

...they STILL can't stop obsessing!

I agree with Cool Cat on Dorsey.
Give me Walsh any day.
Look no further than that '88 season. No Cane QB beat as many top 20 teams (final poll!) in one year as he did:
#3 FSU (31-0)
#4 @Michigan
#10 Nebraska (23-3)
#12 Arkansas
#19 @LSU (44-3)

Only loss to @ #1 ND by 1 point when coach JJ went for the win.

cool cat, they go crazy when I tell em, you put j70 on any of those teams Dorsey was on with same coaching staff Dorsey had and jacory would've left here with at least 2 or 3 rings, jacory made way more plays with an o-line that started matt phipo as his right tackle, in the meantime, Dorsey played with at least 2 first round draft picks and the rest of them played in the nfl or are still playing. Not taking nothing away from Dorsey but jacory was way more accurate than Dorsey when you consider who had more time to throw.

Add in the fact that jacory also was throwing with 4 fingers one year, see Dorsey nut up on the championship game. In fact Dorsey came out throwing a pick nd almost 2 picks in the 1st quarter against Nebraska as well, it's just that the defense covered for em, againgst ohigho fake it cost us. Dorsey missing the tight-end wide open in the flats to tie the game as well, but somehow like coach goldie Dorsey gets a pass, lol.

That ohigho fake team mainly only scored because of Dorsey and his miscues.

"thee incompetent one" couldn't get out of hee fast enuff, iwas ready for him after his first few games here, always shutting it down in the 2nd half and worst off, keeping the starters in to just run the ball and never playing the younger players, than come the next year, he's making excuses about us having a young team. Than when we get to the championship game aagainst Nebraska, i think we scored around 35 points in the first half, 2nd half he comes out trying to run out the clock and i think we only scored 3 points instead of that bozo putting the game away he was always trying to fake like he had all this class.

He showed just how much class he had firing lifetime/cornerstone assistants with proven track records without explanations, than hiring some bozo outsider staff than lying to us trying to tell us the we had a better coaching staff, he was a disgrace, that's why kehoe is back and rightfully so, soldinger should've been back but goldie wasn't smart enuff to pull the trigger on that move, imagine how much better duke Johnson would be under coach soldinger!

Calvin, why didn't Shannon bring back Soldy?!?!

To be honest, i luv the mentality of malcom bunche and what he brings but no way he's better than ereck "big red" flowers. flowers is the real deal and goes out to dominate his man on every play. In fact, flowers is a first team left tackle, the only thing he was lacking last year was just gaining more physical strength but as far as talent and what you want from a tackle be it left or right, nobody is going to want to go up against him, i think bunche will have to be groomed for the inside, and take over Brandon linder's spot, he doesn't have the feet to play tackle at a high level, a solid level but not a high level. So the way i see it, Feliciano and bunche will battle it out and for real, felciano from what I've seen is the better inside man.

The starting o-line in my opinion should be ereck flowers at left tackle, felciano/bunche at left guard, mcdermont at center, linder at right guard and Henderson/bunche at right tackle. I can' see flowers not being in the starting line-up that man is just to dominant and fits in the mold of all the UM greats of the past, it's not about what d-linenmen flowers will be facing, it's about who's going to face ereck flowers, ask bjorn or clarridine what they think about flowers.

Cane88, shannon wouldn't have been allowed to bring none of those guys back, just goes in line with the fact that this administration actually didn't want shannon to succeed but so much. Once boosters started complaining about the way shannon spoke and the fact that shannon wasn't no shoe-shiner for the boosters, no matter how many games shannon won, this administration was just waiting for the opportunity to get rid of shannon.

Think about it, in Shannon's 3rd year 2009, goes up against the toughest opening schedule in the nation, many were picking us to go 1 & 3, some 0 & 4 and some said at best 2 & 2, instead shannon goes 3 & 1, sent expectations thru the roof, now every other game, people are expecting us to win, but over-looked the fact that a lot of the most talented players on the team were just True sophomores. Of course as the season went on, between injures and losing 4 games, people still criticized shannon to no end and that man went 9 & 4. Here coach goldie is going into his 3rd year, 9 & 4 i my mind wouldn't justify us getting rid of shannon for goldie.

I like to complain!

Why me too! Lets be friends!

I like to wear jorts and miss Urban so much!

OMG me too!

3 quarter moon at 12 o'clock ... look up cane fan.

get a fix

So far in his 2 years @ Dah U, Golden Boy has not beat a single top 20 team. That is why he is watering down an already weak schedule.
Might as well make the move to Conference USA and go against all those great former cane coaches

Calvina, it is your brofriend who has the fantasy about 250 lb linebackers. Most folks who watch a little football know that successful linebackers come in various sizes. Perryman was 220 when he showed up here.

So many good dumb Lady Calvina comments popping out makes this blog readable. Pls keep them coming. Some recent favs.

1. JH vs Dorsey----you missed (not surprisingly because you don't have one)that Dorsey actually has a brain. the brain it turns out is a key success factor to modern college quarterbacking unless you are a real freak like can newton (who is too dumb to succeed at the nexy level though).

2. After wowing us with his defense knowlwdge (press coverage/10 yards off the receiver---you know the drill--- Lady C is now and expert on offensive tackles.

3. Hard to describe his ongoing love of the marble mouth Shannon. Greatest guy ever and now can't get a DC job. Every athletic director in the entire country is now an idiot, I guess.

you don't know what you are talking about.....look at all the top 20 teams that run the 3-4 defense.....ALL AVERAGE 250 at LB.....that is the pattern.

4-3 is where you see 220-230...the size emphasis is up front...that's where the push is and LB emphasis is speed.

Alabama 250
Georgia 250
Stamford 250
ND 250

the majority of bcs teams are in 4-3, thats why you see smaller LB's....the trend is bigger at both LB/DE.

UM's problem is no up front push....UM hasn't had 3 and out's in yearssssssss.

and dnofrio is a complete idiot to add to the mess....so golden needs to go since he is defending him to the end.

I understand full well where the word idiot comes from. People act like shannon has been out of work for a long time, lol. He took one year off after not being at Miami(contract situation for one), than in year 2 he went and coached at tcu and is now with Arkansas for year 3 where he got back in the coaching game late.

He had several d-co offers, usF wanted him, a lot fo nfl teams want him but shannon doesn't care to much for the nfl, he'd coach with the dolphins, but shannon to this job for his own personal travels so the next time he's out recruiting out-of-towners he'll really able to tell them what playing out of state or away from what you're use to is really like.

Won't be long before a lot of imbeciles on here will be eating crow about Shannon's coaching situation.

Lady Calvina,

Shannon is nearly as dumb as you are, and that is saying something. After seeing his deer in headline press conferences, lack of game adjustments/time management and inability to motivate players he will never be an HC as well. Your he jus takin time off storyline is nonsense. Hundreds of hc and dc jobs in college football and no one wants him.

Well I see that Calvina and Ms Gallo are back and once again talking to themselves!

Calvin who has been banned from every site he has been on and now has found that he can impart his vast and experienced football knowledge on us stupid fans who certainly don't know what "WE" are talking about.

And "Gallo," remains just a cheap wine!

"Just Sayin," here only because his wife/girlfriend is incarcerated for at least the next few months for being caught again walking the streets of Miami!

Gaturds just picked up a 3* dt. Chose the turds over Rutgers and Purdue.

Lmfao. ....turds trying to distance themselves from the monster they created before he even goes to trial.

" Once boosters started complaining about the way shannon spoke and the fact that shannon wasn't no shoe-shiner for the boosters, no matter how many games shannon won, this administration was just waiting for the opportunity to get rid of shannon. "

VOILA!!

Once again, CALVIN bloody well SPEAKS TRUTH TO POWER. Not that Cane LOUTS would have any inkling of the truth concerning Miami matters and what not! hUh

And Coach Shannon's " HANDS were TIED " from the get go by the University Administration, as Calvin mentioned.

Then throw in the FACT, that both the Cane boosters and SoFla college football media-nexus NEVER accepted Mr. Randy Shannon and what not.

Chit, y'all Hurricane LOUTS should get down on your collective knees and thank the major college football Deities for Randy Shannon.

Seeing that Coach Shannon was a SIXTH-TIER, desperate-majors hire. After at least FIVE " named " head coaches absolutely turned down the University!

Because if Mr. Randy Shannon would've said N-O to his school. Then Miami probably would've hired some head coach from the Sun Belt or W.A.C. or M.A.C. conferences. Oh, they already hired a M.A.C. head coach.

Hard to describe his ongoing love of the marble mouth Shannon. Greatest guy ever and now can't get a DC job. Every athletic director in the entire country is now an idiot, I guess.

mountain cane and like-minded cane LOUTS,

no wonder the VAST MAJORITY of major college LOYAL fandom LITERALLY think of Miami brUtes as a clan of J-O-K-E-S!! When it comes to fan-hood and what not.

Because mountain cane and his Hurricane ILK prove what the VAST majority of college football fandom already know about Miami and it's LAME fan base. Eh. What say.

That the VAST MAJORITY of Cane cheerleaders are BANDWAGON, UNLOYAL, WANNABE' Miami " followers. " Nothing more and nothing less.

And the vast majority equals approximately SEVENTY PERCENT of creepy peeper's in this Cane forum and canespace and eoth and other Miami blogs and what not. dUh

Also, MOUNTAIN CANE and like-minded Miami LOUTS are IN-THE-CLOSET " racists!! " hUh

Bon jour et Bonsoir

UM's problem is no up front push....UM hasn't had 3 and out's in yearssssssss.

and dnofrio is a complete idiot to add to the mess....so golden needs to go since he is defending him to the end.

Marky Mark is INEPT, also!

And D'Onofrio will NEVER subtly be asked to resign or given the Pink Slip by Goldie. Absolutely never!!

So y'all Cane bUbba's should save your breath and wrath. And focus on Miami's JUGGERNAUT offense and special teams and what not.

Because it's a bloody GUARANTEE, that Marky Mark's PLOY's will COST the Hurricanes at least THREE games. dUh

Posted by: AnonymousCane

Perhaps youse' should TWINKLE-TOE back to canespace and or eoth. With the rest of the LOUTISH, Cane C-L-A-N!! hUh

D,

You trying to limbo under the Lady calvina/galloinda dumb bar? It is really hard to do but you have a shot.

This is simple. There are nearly 120 major colleges playing football. None of them want RS as DC, much less HC. The marketplace speaks, you just run your mouth.

Heck, has the University of Miami, Florida Hurricane football team had an absolute SELLOUT in the past SEVEN or EIGHT seasons. Bloody didn't think so.

Yeah, yeah it's SoFla and there's a THIRD-WORLD culture mentality and what not. Then there's the other social activities going on from Coral Gables down to the Keys and what not.

So bloody what!!

Because BOTH u.s.c. and U.C.L.A. don't have any trouble drawing fans on a Saturday. Be it day or night. hUh

So mountain cane LOUT. What's it like at your new HOME. Over at the canespace and what not. Eh. What say.

Because you'll PERFECTLY ' fit it ' at either Hurricane venues. Seeing that mountain cane LOUT is an IN-THE-CLOSET " racist !! " huh

Movie idea---dumb, dumber and D

Why doesn't RS have an HC or DC job, D? I guess you're in the Lady Calvina camp that he's "finding himself in Ark.".
