« Canes reel in another 2014 commitment from their own backyard -- Ely LB Terry McCray | Main | Miami Hurricanes' Duke Johnson and Brandon Linder on ACC Preseason Team »

McCray talks Canes commitment, training with Patrick Peterson, evading Ely pipeline to LSU

Blanche Ely linebacker Terry McCray took an unofficial visit to UM Tuesday morning where he met with coaches and became the 24th commitment in the Hurricanes' 2014 recruiting class.

For McCray, a 6-3, 220-pound All-Broward Third Team selection as a junior, picking the Canes over Minnesota and West Virginia was an easy decision.

"I always liked Miami, always liked the school," McCray said. "I really feel like the team they're putting together is going to be one of the best in the country. I didn't want to miss out on the opportunity for that and to play with my favorite college team."

By picking UM, McCray became the 15th commitment from South Florida to pick the Hurricanes and the first from Ely since 2003 when four members of the Tigers' state championship team including his cousin, defensive lineman Teraz McCray, opted to head to Coral Gables.

"Our tradition for awhile there was sending guys to LSU -- Patrick Peterson, my cousin Rashard Robinson," said McCray, who has received interest from Florida State and LSU throughout the recruiting process. "I just didn't want to follow everybody else."

McCray, who turns 19 in January, said Hurricanes coaches have wanted him since October because of his ability to rush the quarterback and defend in pass coverage.

"On the internet it says I'm an inside linebacker, but I'm really an outside linebacker," McCray said. "UM wants me to be a part of their 3-4 scheme, rushing in and as a drop back linebacker. At Ely we play 3-4. So I'm basically just rushing and dropping back half the time."

McCray said the reason he's solid in pass coverage is because he actually grew up playing defensive back alongside his cousin Robinson and under the tutelage of Peterson. McCray said he's trained with Peterson every day in the mornings during the summer.

"I've known Patrick for almost 10 years. He used to live right by me," McCray said. "That's why I think I'm a good coverage linebacker. I always did DB stuff. He has a few linebackers he's played with here at Ely and other places that come out there and show me a few things. We just do like speed training, sometimes drills, individual drills."

McCray said he moved to linebacker as a sophomore at Ely and has been learning the position year-to-year while adding weight to his body. He's gained about 10 pounds since the end of last season, but still feels just as quick. He said he's also begun to study film a lot more than he did in the past.

"I feel like I have to watch it. I don't like to go out unprepared," McCray said. "It helps me read the snaps. I watch film so much now I know when they're going to snaps. I just started doing it this year. I want to be the best on the field."

McCray said he's done with recruiting and he plans on attending UM. But asked if he might take some trips at the end of the year, he said he probably would go on at least one -- to Minnesota, which like UM has been recruiting him a long time.

"I know this is the school I want to be at," McCray said. "I might go just visit some more schools to get out and go somewhere, just to see something new.

"My parents wanted me to be close to home anyway. They love Miami. We all love Miami."

"We all love Miami."

McCray speaks the truth.

This dude is legit. We are building back the wall around South Florida and the fruits of Al's labor will be seen soon enough. For #UF Game, I'm going: #TheU 34 #UF 17

Hey Calvin where are you?
Looking for bail money?

McCray just gave y'all Cane LOUTS some key information. hUh

Because Marky Mark and Goldie are CHIT-CANNING the " 4-3 " defense for the questionable " 3-4 " defense. Eh. What say.

Chit, the " 4-3 " defense WAS the foundation of Miami past Hurricane SUPREMECY on the synthetic-turf, and numerous conference titles and national championship appearances and OUTRIGHT national championships.

So, I guess both Goldie and Marky Mark must have confidence in the " 3-4 " defensive alignment and what not, and I'm absolutely sure the Hurricanes will play MORE " 3-4 " in 2013. Eh. What say.

I hate Gallo wine.

Mountain Cane and his Cane ILK surely have a FIXATION with Calvin and what not.

Otherwise, Mountain Cane and his Hurricane HENCHMEN wouldn't be HATING on Calvin so mUch. Huh

But then again, Calvin bloody SPEAKS TRUTH TO POWER. Concerning Cane matters and what not. Eh. What say.

They will play a 3-4 defense that looks more like a 4-3. I can pretty much guarantee that they will always have 4 guys with there hand in the dirt and stand one up on when they call for it and play in space(mccord, cain, bond if he would have qualified, and Quan Mo)we will see.

We use to play on that extremely short very fast OB turf. Now we are stuck with the Dolfins' cow pasture grass. Small and fast is good if you can run fast-hard to do that in ankle deep grass. Bigger stronger LBs are necessary until we can get own stadium and return to faster than everyone. Until then, we can beat the crap out of everyone this way too. 4-3, 3-4 or Howard's old 5-2 don't care, just dominate.

My boy d beat me to it, but they know they want to slow our defense down by going to a bigger slower type of defense 3-4 defense. The problem is, the version they're trying to run is trash, db's playing 15 yards off the ball is a waste of time. So all teams are doing is sending their outside receivers straight up the sidelines, and having the slot receiver do an up & out and that pattern has been open for on both sides of the field for 7 to 11 yards for the last 2 years now.

d, these clowns don't faze me man, most of them just don't know football and keep slobbering over a 13 & 11 headcoach that hasn't shown he's an above average gameday coach either. His strengths, he's well organized off the field and has well thought out detailed plans, are they championship plans, if it includes his boy clown 117th, the answer is already clear. If aaron rodgers wanted to place a smart bet he would've betted that we'll never win a national championship as long as clown 117th is in charge of that side of the ball, he's an imposter, needs to be moved to the offensive side of the ball like the did and tried to do with several d-linemen.

And for those who might want to come on here and start trying to say Bama runs a 3-4, we don't run the same 3-4 as they do. Also, the 3-4 produces decent defensive players, how many Bama players have been All-Pro's in the nfl!

LMAO @3:19 comment.....he's a low life with no wife!

Little nevin (Calvin) lol

Great, another 2 unranked 2 star that not one Top-program offered...

outta 24 commits, that makes 12 that have ZERO offers from a Top-program.

half of this entire team wasn't offered by a top-program.

Thank God u play in the unranked acc crappy coastal conference.

maybe u can be the best of the absolute worst and get a runnerup ring someday.

Wrong again, troll. Miami is a "Top Program", so all 24 have offers from a "Top Program".

But even if we take your doubtful word for it, that makes 12 commits that we got against "Top Programs".

The Gators only have 10 commits, TOTAL, including some that have no offers from "Top Programs", by your own definition. So, what does it MATTER what you think when we have more "Top Program" recruits than the Gators?

mountain your an idiot as is most here.....no 220 LB is gonna bulk up to 256...

starting LB 2013 Alabama:

adrian hubbard 6-6 252 soph
ryan anderson 6-2 255 freshman
xzavier devall 6-2 250 freshman
trey depriest 6-2 245 soph
reggie ragland 6-2 259 freshman

LB average 6-2 252....freshman no less that is right out of high school

this guy is third team and will NEVER be 252....useless press clippings

plus alabama ends are at 290....not 250 like you thing you know football

3-4 is all about the LB's......easier to confuse the offense, since they dont know but guess where the pressure is gonna come from......

so the ends at 290 with all 4 LB's at 252 plus speed and its over....we are so far from them it is a travesty....and after watching dnofrio interviews on u tube makes it an impossibility....

all these recruiting stories are all academic....UM defense will suffer 2013 just like last year....

" and after watching dnofrio interviews on u tube makes it an impossibility... " bUbba JIMBO

This Cane fan seems to know what he bloody bloviating bout'. Huh

Because I've been SAGACIOUSLY saying Miami WILL NEVER play in a B.C.S. bowl game, let alone play in a N.C. game, with Marky Mark on the Hurricane sidelines. Eh. What say.

Haha little nevin (gallo) and his girlfriend baby nevin (Calvin) always stroking each other. Lol

WOOF WOOF Mu' Fu'kers

See u Sept. 7th.

And tend to show up around the same time. ..

u see what those big lb do against the spread like a&m .they couldnt get manzel could they.miami has always fast lb this size .just look at the past um lb on nfl rosters how big was vilma, armstead, barrow etc.

Great, another 5 ranked 5 star that not one Top-program offered...

outta 24 commits, that makes 12 that have 45 offers from a Top-program.

half of this entire team was offered by a top-program.

Thank God u play in the ranked ACC world-class coastal conference.

u can be the best of the absolute best and get another championship ring someday.

mountain your a genius as are most here.....a 220 LB is gonna bulk up to 256 under Big Al Golden's program...

starting LB 2013 Alabama:

adrian hubbard 5-6 152 soph
ryan anderson 5-9 155 freshman
xzavier devall 5-7 150 freshman
trey depriest 5-10 145 soph
reggie ragland 5-5 159 freshman

LB average 5-8 152....freshman no less that is right out of high school

Miami's guy is first team and will be 252....fantastic press clippings

plus alabama ends are at 190....not 290 like our canes...you know football

WOOF WOOF Mu' Fu'kers

See u Sept. 7th...we'll be the ones with the yellow pee stain running down the front of our pants.

OK. Let's not lose our focus here: getting players, no matter good or bad, has NEVER been a big deal at UM. U got to put the onus on the coaches. These players can play and that has always been the case at UM.

It's just strange, though. U get rid of a guy like RS and then bring in 'Goldy and crew. I'm assuming that most here are college graduates: How do you figure out that one?

Miami a Top-Program ?

what next... u'll be ranked in the Top-25 ?

D corch will be gone by mid-season...;-)

have u seen fsu class that is ranked #2 now behind tennessee with their number of 2 and 3 star players .they have one 2 star player marvin jones nephew who is a dt a 2 star player that his only offer besides fsu was fordam!

Congratulations canefan on another "top rated" recruit, soon you may be ranked somewhere as the #1 recruiting class of 2014 and it's only July. What a great accomplishment!
Now to change the subject if I may, riddle me this:
Is UM going to change the name of their baseball field anticipating the A Rod PED suspension?
Just like they had to change the name of that student lounge after the Shapiro bust.
Shalala is such a great fundraiser she doesn't care where the money comes from or how tainted it is.
Just put on a stupid grin, take a pic holding the big check, you can always change the name later, just keep the cash, sweet!

At least we dont steal it from taxpayers to fund criminals....do u really think huntley works overtime for free? Wallsteet doesnt

A good selection in McCay. Watching his video he looks better than a low 3*. Two more 4* commits that are strongly needed are Anthony Moten, DT and Baxton Berrios who is listed as an athelete and is a WR,RB or CB. If you watch his video he is almost identical in the way he plays to Wes Welker. He is unbelievable but I wonder how hard the U is trying to get him. They will be sorry if they miss him.

Im so tired of these non UM fans posting about how alabama's DE weigh this much and there LB are this fast makes me sick.

Congratulations canefan on another "top rated" recruit, soon you will deservedly be ranked the #1 recruiting class of 2014 and it's only July. What a great accomplishment!

Now to change the subject if I may, riddle me this:
Is UF going to change the name of their football field anticipating the Aaron Hernandez murder convictions?
Just like they had to change the name of that student lounge after the 50 felony busts.

Bernie Machen is such drunk he doesn't care where the money comes from or how tainted it is.

He just puts on his normal stupid grin, gets bailed out of the drunk tank, knowing he can always hire Huntley Johnson later, just keep the cash coming, sweet! Bow-Wow!

Florida a Top-Program ?

what next... u'll be ranked in the Top-100 ?

u see what those big lb do against the spread like a&m .they couldnt get manzel could they.miami has always fast lb this size .just look at the past um lb on nfl rosters how big was vilma, armstead, barrow etc.

This man knows his football, also ask Georgia what they thought about that 3-4 crap. You have to have an offense that attacks defenses you can be in a sit-back and wait approach of defense, we'll be down by a minumu of 14 points.

3-4/4-3 it doesn't matter as long as it works this year because there are no excuses. I want to see good defense from the very first snap. If this dunno can't put a better defense performance on the field the first 2 games he should be fired and immediately replaced. FAU should not score more than 10 pts!! So if he has to blitz every down, overload a side, 46-defense, I do not care but if there are no improvements from 117th after the first 2 games he must go. Coach Dunno had all last year,a spring and now upcoming fall camp to fix this problem. If not fixed than HE MUST GO!!NO MORE EXCUSES!!

No disrespect to FAU. BUt In order for MIami to make a statement, the FAU game has to be >50 points on Offense, allowing some 2s and 3s in to get game reps, and <14 points on Defense. period. Anything short of that will be unacceptable.

For all you so-called defensive experts, like doosh calvin, who the () cares what your opinion is. You all want "light" and fast lbs? You mean like the nes that got run over by a train called Nebraska in 1994? Ask Warren Sapp what that was like. Or more recently, like how they stopped Kansas State? You all talk garbage.

Coach Golden's football camp(s) has once again paid big dividends as Terry McCray was an attendee.

Those camps are a brilliant program as not only does the Miami staff have the opportunity to create close relationships with prospects, but they serve as tryouts where the staff get first-hand insights into the athleticism of the players and maybe more importantly, the mental make-up of the player.

Al Golden deserves a tremendous amount of credit for this recruiting game changing program.

Based on the above I have no doubt that Terry McCray will be a dominating player at the college level.

Miami is not moving to a strictly 3-4 defense. They are recruiting kids to play a multiple defense. This is the trend in college football now.

The U, that is true. Folks that don't actually understand football don't see that Alabama plays both 4-3 and 3-4, they just look at the starting lineup image on the TV and think it is how they play the whole game.

Miami is signing players that can play 3-4 and 4-3, and that gives them a flexibility that the stat-watchers don't understand.

"Is UM going to change the name of their baseball field anticipating the A Rod PED suspension?
Just like they had to change the name of that student lounge after the Shapiro bust."

Good question based on fact.

"Is UF going to change the name of their football field anticipating the Aaron Hernandez murder convictions?
Just like they had to change the name of that student lounge after the 50 felony busts."

copy and paste retort based on fantasy and stupidity

Based on fact not cowardly gator felon lies:

^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Is UF going to change the name of their football field anticipating the Aaron Hernandez murder convictions?

Just like they had to change the name of that student lounge after the 70 felony busts."

Bernie Machen is such drunk he doesn't care where the money comes from or how tainted it is.

He just puts on his normal stupid grin, gets bailed out of the drunk tank, knowing he can always hire Huntley Johnson later, just keep the cash coming, sweet! Bow-Wow said the dummy Morrison! LMAO off at cowardly gators!!!

Nice work canefan, shows how intelligent you are.
Let's see if you can top yourself.

Is MLB and/or the NCAA going to connect the dots between Biogenesis, former cane players like Braun and the former cane baseball trainer and UM?

Is UM going to change the name of their baseball field anticipating the A Rod PED suspension?
Just like they had to change the name of that student lounge after the Shapiro bust.

Is wall street or the ncaa gonna connect the dots between huntley and uf( too many to name) arrests?

Just askin'?.....

sidcane seems to me that UFelon had Huntley Johnson on retainer just to make sure that things were handled from the inside, and nothing would see the light of day as far as anything affecting UFelon!.

Could the NCAA look into something like this?.

Just sayin.
Go 'Canes

Add State Attorney Bill Cervone to the list of connecting dots to. Drops and sweeps cases under the rug routinely when it comes to gaturd players. He just so happens to be a turd season ticket holder.

Jim Gallo,
I know you love your lists so suck on this one:

Sean Spence 211 as Freshman
Tavares Gooden 220 as freshman
Darryl Sharpton 218 as a freshman
Jonathan Beason 220 as Freshman
Rocky McIntosh 219 as RedShirt Freshman
Jonathan Vilma 215 as Freshman (220lbs as a Senior)
Dan Morgan 220 as Sophmore
Ray Lewis 216 as Sophmore
