With injuries mounting, UM coach Al Golden says he doesn't feel good about offensive line depth

According to the roster, the Miami Hurricanes have 15 offensive linemen on the team this season.

But all of those guys certainly aren't practicing right now.

Miami's starting offensive line unit, expected to be one of the best in the country this season with six returning starters (tackles Ereck Flowers, Seantrel Henderson, Malcolm Bunche, guards Brandon Linder and Jonathan Feliciano and center Shane McDermott), remains intact and pretty much 100 percent through the first two weeks of camp. That's the good news.

The bad news? The guys behind them keep going down.

Golden said Wednesday that freshman Hunter Knighton (6-5, 278) will miss the rest of the season following shoulder surgery on Tuesday, and backup guard Danny Isidora, who had foot surgery last week, will be sidelined at least eight weeks. That's at least half the season, not counting recovery time.

New to the injury list this week: freshman tackle Sunny Odogwu (6-8, 318), who was banged up in Sunday's scrimmage, and freshman guard/tackle Alex Gall (6-5, 304). Golden said the plan is to keep Odogwu (knee) out of practice a few days so he regains his health.

"His MRI came back OK," Golden said of Odogwu. "I guess if we were playing he would be like questionable or probable.

"Gall has an infection in his hand," Golden continued. "It doesn't cause me distress other than getting lined up in practice. I think someone said he got a bite, a spider bite or something that got infected. I don't know the specifics of it other than it blew up on him and we're trying to get him antibiotics to get it settled down."

Although there is plenty of reason for optimism this season with the Hurricanes considering they've got 19 starters back from a 7-5 team, Golden is in mid-camp form these days when asked how he feels about a particular unit or group.

"I do not feel good about the offensive line situation," Golden said. "I say this constantly, but I don't feel good about anything right now. I just think we're not in a situation where we can just sit back and go on automatic pilot and just let the depth take care of itself. We're still growing and learning. In a lot of places we're still not veteran."

Of the four injuries, the one that hurts the most is Isidora. He was clearly the backup at guard if something were to happen to Linder, Bunche or Feliciano.

Senior Jared Wheeler is listed as the backup at center, but could slide over to guard if needed. Sophomore Hunter Wells and redshirt freshman Taylor Gadbois are healthy and practicing, but they were seen as the eighth and ninth guys on the totem poll behind Isidora.

MORE NOTES

> Receiver Rashawn Scott was wearing a red non-contact jersey at practice Wednesday afternoon. It's unclear when he was injured. But he wasn't wearing any braces on his knee or appearing to be in a great amount of pain.

> Golden said defensive lineman Jalen Grimble asked for his release Monday night from the team.

"Jalen's a great young man. He wanted to make a move," Golden said. "At the end of the day, we released him. We're going to help him any way we can to help him find what he's looking for. The rest of it is private. He's a great kid. There's nothing [troublesome about his departure]. It's just a situation where he wants to move forward. Sad to see him go given our situation at defensive line."

> Grimble obviously saw the writing on the wall after the arrival of four new defensive line transfers this fall.

Asked about how his new defensive linemen looked in Tuesday's practices, Golden said: " I'm excited about all the guys. All of the young guys are trying to make their way in and whether its [Ufomba] Kamalu and those [new arrivals] they're bringing some maturity where we desperately need it. We're not out of the woods yet on the D-line. You guys know that. We've got a long way to go to be the type of defensive line we want to be both in development and then the acquisition. They give us some maturity right now and help us recover from a tough two years in the recruiting end."

> Golden said he wants to see tackling and blocking by his receivers and tight ends improve in UM's next scrimmage Friday. He also said he wants to see Stephen Morris have a better day throwing the football.

"I'd like to see our completion percentage go up," Golden said. "Stephen was much better yesterday as was the offense than it was on Sunday. Our completion percentage can't be as low as it was on Sunday."

> Kicker Matt Goudis was 3-for-3 in Sunday's scrimmage on field goal attempts, connecting on 45, 45 and 47-yard kicks. But he missed a pair in Tuesday night's special teams scrimmage Golden said.

> Golden said he's more than happy with the conditioning level of his kickers. He compared punter Pat O'Donnell to fictional movie villain Ivan Drago of Rocky fame.

> Golden said he likes the competition right now at tight end.

"There's three that are in the rotation. Beau [Sandland], Asante [Cleveland] and Clive [Walford]," Golden said. "Beau has really changed his body and conditioning. He's a different person than he was in the spring."

> Golden said camp will officially close next Wednesday. The team's final scrimmage is Friday.

Lady Calvina digging up more nonsense:

Worst Preparation of all time:

It is obviously------ your butt dream RS and his 0-48 Orange Bowl finale debacle.

Hey Randy, the tight end is still open.

Lady Calvin misses Grimble who wasn't even on the depth chart of our weakest unit.

Probably misses his weight gain or his "natural" weight.

Goes well with the other part of his brain and D's height obsession.

Well, the D-Co certainly in on the hot seat, but Golden has a point about needing stability. One of Shannon's many problems was a constant rotation of coordinators. It definitely wouldn't have helped sense we were already losing Jedd. But last year we knew the defense would be terrible. We lost veteran guys to the NFL and other problems so we had to play guys who weren't ready. So yes, coach D is on the hot seat but we have more depth, more experience, and our players are getting better. We'll see.

jax, the situation shannon was put in was this, he was the 1st headcoach since schnelly UM that didn't have the cornerston assistant coaches on staff to run with. All the headcoaches except shannon had art kehoe to run with, not shannon so he went and got a real solid guy but he's no art kehoe on the mental side, in fact he was weak mentally, always counting starts of national championship teams as some type of litmus test when you're suppose to win a title, it was an idiotic way of thinking. shannon didn't have don soldinger or vernon heargraves, the one move shannon made that was a bad move was putting coach hurtt in charge of the d-line instead of retaining palmero.

I can go on and on, but i knew coach shannon didn't have the road dawgs to when a championship, add to the fact that they low balled em so instead of being able to go out an acquire quality assistance(james coley 500K alone).

Lot of excuses for Shannon, huh Calvin?

Pathetic.

Golden said he's more than happy with the conditioning level of his kickers. He compared punter Pat O'Donnell to fictional movie villain Ivan Drago of Rocky fame.

And the tight has still been open the last two seasons since he left, even moreso if you check the defensive stats from then that were better than they are now of course.

Without Shannon recruits, where would we be? They're our best players lol! So stop bringing up Shannon, it doesn't help your arguments.

Also, who's more obsessed with heights and weights than Alverage? He thinks that keeping track of weight is coaching, no thats Andreu Swasey's duty. They are no auto-pilot buttons, you need to game plan, scheme, adjust, and improvise on gamedays. "the kids...we aren't there yet, we need to by in more, we're young, they're skinny, the kids..." Its always the kids.

Calvin is best described below...clowns and more clowns!

^^^^^^^

JJ brought a wildly superior team that was completely unprepared or motivated to play Penn State in a national championship game and got waxed. Does that mean that JJ was a bad coach? Of course not, but the normal suspects on this blog would have called for the man to be fired.

Miami football has created unrealistic expectations amongst the fan base due to their great success. This is the same situation that occurred at UCLA basketball after John Wooden's incredible run.

The UCLA fan's demanded the same level of success no matter what and those expectations all but assured UCLA would never reach the dizzying heights they had in the past.

The UCLA fans attacked the administration, the coaches and players that led to players not wanting to play for the bruins and coaches not wanting to coach there.

The Hurricanes are going through a parallel experience where expectations are ridiculous and beginning with Coker the overwhelming negativity from the fans base played a major roll in topflight players not wanting to join the Canes as they believed what the fans were saying that the program was a mess and would not get better. One example was the 5 star defensive back from Alabama who committed to the Canes during the Coker era and his parents posted on the various blogs about how happy they were that their son was going to be a Cane. That mindset soon ended after the parents saw the unbelievable trash being posted on our blogs by Miami fans and the kid ended up de-committing. It was a self fulfilling prophecy--much like what Calvin is hoping to achieve.

Granted, jealous, cowardly gator fans post on all Miami blogs posting nonsense trying to dissuade recruits from joining the Canes, but the reality is many so-called Miami fans have done great damage to the program due to their whining, moaning and clueless comments and opinions.

Al Golden recognized this challenge and has made it clear to his coaches, players and the real Miami fans you are either with the Canes or against the Canes...like he and his coaches and players have said...they will remember who was with them and who was against them.

If Coach Golden accepts a job at a better program, a real likelihood, hiring another coach of any caliber will be almost impossible. No coach in his right mind would want to come here after witnessing the treatment Coker, Shannon and now Golden has received, because that coach will know that Miami fans will destroy any chance he would have at success while in Miami and any future coaching opportunities.

No harriet, no one was ever more wide open in the history of football than the VA tight end on OB closing night.

Your distorted view of Shannon recruits is laughable. Obviously, you count the one's that Golden brought in his first year as Shannon recruits. Under that dumb logic, Golden has only had 2 recruiting classes, including the one that just arrived. So, obviously most starters are going to be upper classmen. DUH.

You forgot to change your name back Calvin.

Pathetic.

Why is dissing Shannon the only way some of you guys can make a point? Shannon wasn't the answer. Did he do some good things? Yes but not good enough. The fact that he's the measuring stick is what's depressing. If that's the only way to talk up our current staff then we're in trouble.

I want Al to do well and bring number 6 and 7 to coral gables, and willing to give him not 1 but 2 more years barring he either fix the defense or fire his guy if we struggle again. But can't we agree it's getting boring hearing him mentioning someones weight gain in every interview? I just don't recall coaches always answering questions in that manner all the time. I used to hate hearing Shannon always comparing his guys to former players only for them to not perform.

oh for god's sake, goldie, Stop whining!!!!

If you have six big linemen, they can play both offense and four down lineman defense and special teams.

Hint: Get the Canes in good physical conditioning like running down to Key Largo and back every day. And you will have no problems and no injuries, dumbazz.

You are definitely not worth what they are paying you.

////////////////////////////////

Also, seems to me like coach goldie is worried about the wrong side of the ball anyway!

Haha Calvin, you are so right!!!!!!

About everything!!!!

And funny!!

Calvin: U are right: RS never had the assistant coaches in place to really make a surge. But he started himself on the right path with Trestman. My thinking is that RS was going to go back to DC, let Trestman or some other big name come in as HC or OC. If Trestman is with the UM program, good things happen.

RS could not get what he wanted thru the front door so he had that plan B in the making. Problem was and is DS. Just doesn't know sports. She doesn't know what it takes to run a big time college football program and in a state like FL.

RS was reduced to getting what he thought were up and comers like Nix. Nix was a head case and not really fully prepared for the OC job. he did not handle the QB part of it well either. To this day, I don't understand where Nix was coming from.

I take for those who are impressed with coach goldie saying "this team crushed the fitness test" that must mean this team is going to be just as good as the 2001/2002 team!

I was happy to hear coach goldie telling everyone how in shape this teams is so what that did was cut out another loser's excuse and created one less move on the chess board. Coach goldie is starting to realize that now so he's starting try and find ways to moon-walk once a loss comes. And i'm not sure how he's saying we're short of o-linemen, when in his first 2 years here all he did was moves guys from defense to the offensive side of the ball. Where's jacoby briscoe!

cool cat right on the money. shannon also tried to get dirk koeter the oc with the falcons, didn't have enuff money and their agents realized shannon wasn't fully supported byt they both wanted to come on down. Funny how the money all of a sudden shows up with coach goldie here. highest paid staff in UM history, with the worst defense in UM history, and we know it has nothing to do with coach barrow, he was her when we played defense before them.

RS personally hired Nix based on how challenging he found it to match up against him as the GT oc. What a joke.

Injuries happen in camp all the time...it's how you develop and prepare the backups that matter. I myself prefer a shorter rotation on the O-line...it builds the cohesion amongst the group.

P.S. - Soldy's sister I mean wife will be working the corner of 79th and Biscayne the weekend of Sept 7th

Your distorted view of Shannon recruits is laughable. Obviously, you count the one's that Golden brought in his first year as Shannon recruits.
Posted by: Mountain Cane | August 14, 2013 at 06:26 PM

No need to have views when what I said is fact. Morris was recruited by and committed during RS tenure. And Duke Johnson said himself that his relationship with Shannon solidified his commit. What's distorted about that?

Those are our two best players correct?

Wow, I have a troll/imposter posting as me now. But others need a life...yea..ok.

'Cool 'Cat, how has Donna Shalala has held the program back?

Coaches run football programs, not university presidents. Shannon was a bad head coach, he'll never sniff another head coach opportunity in his career because of how bad he was for Miami.

HarrietTubmanCane, you're completely full of s**t, Duke Johnson has never said a word about Randy Shannon.

Here's a story on ESPN

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9524262/college-football-games-century-miami-florida-state-1991

That's right Calvin...you caught us...we believe that because of the great strength and conditioning program that Coach Golden installed that means this year's team will be a good, if not better than the 2001/02 team.

And you believe that no matter how many areas Coach Golden has improved the Miami football program after the mess Shannon left...Shannie is a better coach than Goldie.

And you also believe the NCAA investigation didn't hurt the Canes, which I suppose means that every program in the country hopes to be investigated by the NCAA like Miami.

aint going nowhere till they get rid of D'Onofrio
Calvin was right with thse scores of Unprepared games- look at the scores the other teams ran up- Duke 45 points- last game of the year Early on D'Onofio said they were in experienced- last game Duke scores 35 points in the second half got 585 yrds- He sure as heck didn't help them by giving them :expeerience" Now it the new kids that are gonna help. Look at Ga tech last year- once they fired their defensive co-ordinator they started to win some games.
just opinion

LOL.u can grab all the recruites u want..Alabama is ganna stomp u out anyways..so have fun w that ..Ga

Chris Freet, so you're going on the record stating that this team will be better than 2001-2002's team?

Where your proof that Alverage has improved anything? Whats better proof then a win/loss stat? He is 13-11, RS record was similar. Its not a no-brainer that Golden is superior to RS, unless you're prematurely swayed by other reasons. Shannon left a mess of a upperclass laden team (several NFL players right now), his starting QB now Stephen Morris and had already secured the commitment of Duke Johnson the September prior to RS firing (8/2010, Duke's junior year), yeah thats a mess thats still paying dividends till this day. With shannon's players gone, our statistics have fallen on offense and plummeted on defense. So you're just lying and referencing the binder of excuses.

How has the NCAA investigation hurt the Canes? We've self-imposed everything instead of fighting them back. They haven't done anything because they don't have anything but jailhouse confessions and hearsay. Our recruiting classes have been cool, negative recruiting is a annual obstacle for our coaches.

It doesn't matter how everyone else feels, we aint them and of course no one wants to be investigated--that was Nevin's point--to ruffle our feathers.

Worse defensive performance in history

I cannot watch this. My wife cant watch this. Our collective blood pressures were 200/120 each! This team is going to kill me one day.

Why do I even care when these overpaid clowns keep losing games with their horrific coaching?

How do you call a conservative series when you have such excellent field position? This type of game time coaching is pathetic- I blame Fisch more than Golden.

Donofrio- You are a jerk and youcant coach a pop warner defense. You are horrendous. Every team looks great against us thanks to you.

Players:

Highsmith and Finnie dont belong in D-1 period. Give your scholies away because you all stink.

Eddie Johnson- Whatever you did to get you suspended for this game? Give away your scholie

Same with Rashawn Scott.

Chikillo- whatr did you do in the off season to become so soft and slow?

I cant watch this anymore. Thye will lose to Duke because Duke plays the same type of offense- to the TEs and dink and dunk to great receivers and Miami'
s D will play soft and not tackle and not put pressure on the QB

Golden is putting a system in place from the coaching/conditioning standpoint and building a fence around the state of Dade. The U will be back, trust and believe.

Calvin,

Donna was in Randy's corner and wanted him to succeed, genuwinely. My opinion? Eventhough he deserved a shot, he doesn't get that job if another president is there.

Randy had two fatal flaws, he was a shut-in personality and not the most talented communicator; Second, he was a black head coach at a small private school--that it seems--no talented coordinators wanted to work with.

If you don't have the scratch to buy who you want, you better be one damn charming dude.

"And Duke Johnson said himself that his relationship with Shannon solidified his commit."

He never said that. You pulled that out your ass.

I'm calling this BS.. Can you prove that Marc Trestman wanted to leave as Head Coach of the Montreal Alloutes to be the OC at UM under Shannon? Can you prove that Dirk Koetter wanted to leave the Offensive Coordinator job with the Jacksonville Jaguars to be the OC at UM under Shannon? It wouldn't make any sense for either one of their careers and neither one interviewed or spoke with Shannon about any OC vacancy.

Q: 'Cool 'Cat, how has Donna Shalala has held the program back?

A: She bulldozed the Orange Bowl.

"And Duke Johnson said himself that his relationship with Shannon solidified his commit."

He never said that. You pulled that out your ass.

Ask Manny, Shannon knows his family and mom.

I critique everything Golden says (he is the coach), and you critique everything I say (who am I for U to be sweating my sac so hard)? Changing aliases to keep the stalking fresh.

MY ONLY PROBLEM WITH COACH GOLDEN WHO I DO THINK IS DOING A VERY GOOD JOB DESPITE THE CIRCUMSTANCES,,IS HE IS SO CAUGHT UP IN THE OLDER,MATURITY PLAYERS CRAP.. YES VETERANS PERFORM BETTER THAN FRESHMEN OVER ALL BUT YOU CAN'T JUST ASSUME A PLAYER IS BETTER BECAUSE HE IS OLDER. THAT BULLS..T !! IF IT WAS TRUE THAN DUKE WOULD NOT HAVE SEEN THE FIELD LAST YEAR. IF A FRESHMAN IS VERY TALENTED THAN SIMPLIFY THE ROLE FOR HIM TO PERFORM AT HIS BEST WITHOUT HAVING TO DO TOO MUCH THINKING. IF MY BEST DEFENSIVE BACK IS A FRESHMAN AND HE PLAYS BETTER MAN COVERAGE THAN PLAY HIM IN MAN COVERAGE AND LET HIS TALENT SHOW.. THIS STAFF IS STUCK IN THE 80'S WHERE VERY FEW TEAMS STARTED FRESHMEN AS A WHOLE BUT TODAY'S GAME HAS CHANGED SO MUCH THAT HS COACHING IS 3 TIMES MORE ADVANCED THAN THE 80'S. DEON SANDERS HAS EVERY YOUNG FOOTBALL PLAYER WITH SPEED WANT TO PLAY MAN/MAN COVERAGE LIKE HE DID. SO WHY NOT ALLOW HIM TO DO WHAT HE'S BEEN DOING SINCE HE WAS 8-9 YEARS OLD, NOW THE KID IS 18/19 AND IS A BETTER PLAYER THAN THE 21/22 YEAR OLD STARTER WHO HAS NOT REALLY DONE A GOOD JOB!! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?? MAKE THIS TALENTED YOUNG MAN WAIT TIL HE IS "MATURE" ENOUGH TO PLAY ? THIS EXPLAINS 7-5 OR 13-11 RECORD NOT TO MENTION THE DUMB ASS DC !! IF THE BEST PLAYER IS A FRESHMAN PLAY HIM EVEN IF IT'S LIMITED. GO CANES!!

Let's not kid ourselves ladies and gentlemen. This is a very soft UM schedule this year. If the team finishes less than 10-2 Golden should be run out of town and no way D'Onofrio can stay as our D-Coord.

it's 6 am Thursday morning ...

I now know why yous guys dont have excuses for your offense, they suckand U know it. You couldnt come up with an excusefor that unless you just came out and said they suck,so U keep your mouths shut and say other teams suck. I will take my d over that o anyday. Gators will be lucky to win 6 this year if they beat five creampuff sec teams ,toledo and muschamp doesnt retire for health reasons. Meyer got chocked down along with a few other coaches , no wonder he had esophageal problems. More arrests on the horizon, but dont worry, noone get suspended unless the media is on it. Morrison will play at toledo, oops, against toledo . Forgot gators are afraid to travel. Your school has tried time and again to get out of this game in miami and now U have to play it. To true Hurricane fans who lived through the 80s and 90s and always in the hunt for a NC, anything worse than an 11-1 record is a losing season.

I really get tired of goldie's constant excuses when in fact, the facts of the piss poor defenses of d'o are as clear as the nose in front of goldie's face.

And the Canes are NOT in good condition. When offensive linemen can not move their feet and block, or if they have big, fat bellies, they are NOT in shape regardless how much they can bench press.

As far as needing to sign in with your own name and facebook, that is a good way to lose readers. No one in their right mind is going to register an honest opinion that is negative about the team and then face the trolls insults. It is bad enough the trolls on here are as clueless about football as shalalahala and d'o and goldie. And they all go rah, rah but do not understand that football is as much a chess match and agility sport as it is a physical hitting sport.

'72,

Explain how everyone passing the conditioning test, weight up, strength up AND body fat down is your definition of "NOT in good condition".

You saying so doesn't make it so.

In fact, you saying so, likely makes it not so. Like in this case.
