D'Onofrio likes fact many Hurricanes having a hand in defense's success

Of all the things Mark D'Onofrio seems to be proud of the most when it comes to UM's vast improvements on defense it's the fact so many different players are having a hand in it.

"That's what's going on with our defense. Not one guy is standing out," said D'Onofrio, whose unit came into Monday ranked seventh in scoring defense, 10th in total defense, fourth in turnover margin and 10th in passing efficiency defense.

"You see 16 sacks, but you see [12] guys in on a sack. You see six interceptions and five guys have interceptions. Seven caused fumbles and seven guys caused the fumble. Seven guys recovered it. There's a lot going on. You spread it around. That's a sign guys are unselfish, trying to do their job in the defense."

During UM's struggles in his first two seasons, D'Onofrio often said players were freelancing too often. That led to players blowing gap assignments and running lanes opening up.

That of course is what the Hurricanes can ill-afford to do this week against Georgia Tech, whose flexbone option offense requires sound assignment football to stop.

Sure, UM's defense is much improved. But Georgia Tech's attack (ranked 51st in total offense, 37th in scoring offense) is superior to any offense the Hurricanes have faced this season. Savannah State is an abysmal Football Championship Subdivision program, and FAU ranks 109th in total offense, 104th in scoring; Florida ranks 70th in total offense; 91st in scoring and South Florida ranks 120th in total offense; 118th in scoring.

The good news for UM is that D'Onofrio and the Hurricanes have a strong track record in stopping Paul Johnson's offense. Although UM gave up 287 yards and five TDs a year ago on the ground to the Yellow Jackets, the Hurricanes have done the second-best job in the ACC's Coastal Division slowing Georgia Tech's running game down since Golden's arrival. Only Virginia Tech (188 yard average) has done better than UM (210.5 yards allowed average). The Hokies are 3-0 against Georgia Tech over the last three seasons including last week's 17-10 win.

The magic number it seems is keeping Georgia Tech under 300 yards on the ground. The Yellow Jackets are 4-11 when they finish under 300 yards rushing since the start of the 2011 season, and 14-2 when they eclipse the 300-yard mark.

"You always run scared. You never sit there and stop [working on it]," said D'Onofrio, who first faced the flexbone option when he was a graduate assistant at Georgia in 2000 when he had to breakdown 20 game films of Johnson's offense at Georgia Southern.

"Obviously you continue to work on it. They do such a good job, find new wrinkles. They do an amazing job. You just run scared and do the best you can.

"I've been part of a lot of staffs that have played it. We played it every year since 2006 when I was at Temple. We played Army, Navy two times a year. Same thing at Rutgers. We played Navy and Army when they were running it. It seems like every year we've had to play it."

D'Onofrio said the returning experience Miami has from last year's win will help.

"Last year the way we were banged up and where we were at -- at that point -- we really had an inexperienced group out there," D'Onofrio said. "[Georgia Tech] had periods where they really did well and we were susceptible to the big play. You definitely hope that the guys coming back, having played that and understanding the scheme and the type of things we want to get done [we are better against it]. We've continued to enhance what we want to do against these guys and have developed a package [for it] because we've got a group of older guys."

MORE NEWS AND NOTES

> Of UM's 16 sacks this season, D'Onofrio said most have come because of added pressure: "I don't know the number, but there's quite a few of them off the pressure, trying to bring a fifth rusher, a sixth rusher, trying to find an opportunity where you think you can take advantage."

D'Onofrio has said in the past he would prefer to only rush three or four linemen and get to the quarterback.

> Who stood out on game film the most against USF? Backup middle linebacker Raphael Kirby, D'Onofrio said.

"You go back and look at it. He showed up around the ball And he was really physical," D'Onofrio said. "He played with knee bend, base and you saw his explosion. You saw him really play fast."

> A week after looking "rusty" in his first game back from sports hernia surgery, safety Deon Bush had a sack and forced fumble against USF. Is Bush turning the corner?

"I think he is," D'Onofrio said. "Again, he missed so much. He missed a lot of the summer. He missed a lot of training camp. I talked about it last year -- it's the hardest position to play on the defense. It's so demanding. You have to run the show back there. You have to get us in the right call. You have to be able to blitz. You have to be able to cover, play in zone, play man, play in the post. It's a demanding position and you have to see it all. People are hurrying up and they're playing fast and doing different things. You didn't get all those reps everybody else got during the summer or during training camp. It takes time to process it. But he's moving in the right direction."

> Sophomore Tyriq McCord, a pass rusher who has seen an average of 20-25 snaps a game over the last three weeks, has created turnovers in three straight games. But will he have a role Saturday against run-prone Georgia Tech?

"We're still working through everything, but he'll have an opportunity to have a chance to play," D'Onofrio said. "Again, certain guys roles might be different from week-to-week. We have enough depth where you can use different guys in different situations. We'll see how it all plays out.

"He's got a role right now and it's really a third down role. We're looking for him to increase his role and fight for reps on first and second down. Right now he's a third string guy, a flip guy for us. He can play linebacker, can play rush end. So he's doing all those things. He was a recipient of the ball coming to him two times the last two weeks and he caught it, which is good. Obviously he made a great play against Florida, a sack caused fumble late in the game. He's tipped a pass I think. He's been around the ball on the reps that he's gotten. He's limited reps, but good production."

I come bloody clean, because I was a Marky Mark sceptic from the get go and what not. See Miami's game against Maryland. dUh

However, he and his staff and naturally the Hurricane D-unit have SURPISED the vast majority of Cane loyalists. Eh. What say. And ye know whom ye be!!

By the way, CALVIN mentioned D'Onofrio needed to be in the booth and his suggestion has paid Dividends and what not.

This will be the first real test for the D. The previous games are not good measuring points, even the UF game.

GT's offense will reveal something about DunnoToday, DunnoTomorrow, JustPlainandSimpleDunno.

Ain't ready to eat the whole crow yet but I'll eat a leg.

I see improvement where as last year even terrible offenses made our 'efense look bad but now they're held in check.

Those the turds did venture into the red zone on multiple occasions they were kept off the score board!!!!

UM has had Tech's number and this year's defense is good enough to stop Tech again if they remain disciplined. The players on D are older and more experienced. Um's offense needs to secure the ball and UM should be fine. This is never an easy game, but UM should win this one at home.

Please! This has nothing to do with what Calvin said. This has something to do with a coach being able to trust his players. An assistant coach will never go up in a booth when he is either installing a new system or if he has a bunch of young players like we had the past 2 yrs. He's in the booth because he has leaders now and because he can trust those young players from last yr who know the playbook now. I sit hear and read all of your comments just about everyday and I respect everything each one of you say even if I disagree with it. I disagree with mostly everything Gallo and Calvin say, but what they say doesn't prove them not to be true Canes fans.I have a piece for them which I'll post about Shannon and some other info as well and I can back up everything I say because I'm nose deep into what has been going on at The U and I always speak to current and former players. I have to go now, but I'll have an interesting piece for all of you guys and I'm always up for a debate, but you better bring your A game because I back up everything I say with valid info. The U!

I'm worried about our line being hurt with all the cut blocks that GT uses..

GT should be no problem. This is a very good team and they will shut GT down. Miami is very very good. Nov 1
will be the real test

Look at the Title of this article and remember how D'Onofrio cried like a baby and made every excuse possible last year when our defense got shredded like Swiss cheese. He said we had to play too many guys last year. Enjoy it while it last D'Onofrio because not everyone believes you're a good Football Coach.

Dino is one of the great defensive minds in college football.

NOT TO MENTION....

Our Offense is vastly improved compared to 2012....

GT will need to keep up with our scoring to have a chance....

Our D is BIGGER and WISER this year.

CANES 5-0 come next Saturday evening...

MORONS keep coming on this blog bashing the coaching staff who had to take over a train wreck program left by Randy Shannon, dig out from a huge recruiting hole, fight for recruits against NCAA dirtbags, AND coach this team up and get their conditioning up....

For the level of improvement we are seeing, this coaching staff has done more than ANY in the NCAA Div I.

Look at Lane Kiffin as a comparison of inheriting a troubled program and still had top 10 recruiting classes for 4 years.

Cool Cat,

Why wasn't UF a good measuring stick? Is it bc we hadn't played them in forever?

Calvin: True. Coley is a freshman, too. I don't like to harp on that part, but it does figure in, especially in a psychological sense. UM has the type of offensive players to score at least 40 points a game. There is still not enough usage from the TE spot. I hope this OC realizes there are a lot of ways Duke can help U, and without the ball in his hands.

This coaching crew will bring UM a notch up from mediocrity.

Fact: If there is a coaching opening at USF, UCF, FAU or some FL school, there is no reason why RS shouldn't get that job if he wants it. Correct me if I'm wrong: RS was a consideration for the FAU job and can handle a FL coaching job because he has a lock on the recruiting base.

As far as the tight-ends go, i still think it's morris, when morris is in the game, he can't be trusted to throw the ball over the linebacker and in front of the safety to complete a pass to a tight-end, so unless the tight-ends are wide open in the flats and out routes when smo is in there, that's where the limitation is coming from.

Now now trolls a close mouth has no foot in it .... right ?
Honestly GT is a welcome challenge I am excited to see are D against this team I know GT will put together a few good drives ( D-1 football people ) but I think this game is not that close 34 -14 the U !!!!!! One win at a time

What up dawg, all i'm saying is, i gave coach donofrio is respect after the gaytor game, not because we were a dominant defense, but because guys actually got turn-overs based on the scheme and i thought brent pease vs donofrio was going to be easy work for brent. But when i start seeing our defensive rankings, that's when i can get irritated, cause after playing the teams we just played, we should be ranked higher in our defensive rankings.

Also, usF called some nice running plays on us that worked well, that shaw guy had either 100 yards or around 100 yards rushing before the half and the gaytors moved the ball consistently up & down the field on us. So i'm not a believer, i just gave coach donofrio his respect, you become a part of a win vs the gaytors or Fsu, i'm going to give you some form of respect, unless you're kyle "snitch" wrong.

So from here on in, it seems to me like the cupcakes are starting to be over, time to start playing games where people should actually have to buy tickets now, FAU, Savannah St. had to be free ticket games, if somebody bought those tickets that didn't have family on the team that's amazing.

We'll find out real soon if somebody is hiding behind 3 cupcake teams with these uncertified defensive rankings or if we're actually playing real defense, we played strong defense agaisnt the gaytors, not dominant.

What it is Cal..

Speaking on the coley and the wr corps, the may be the best looking GROUP since Moss, Wayne, and Andre King.

It's prolly not a Dre Johnson in this bunch but still...

Calvin, you can't deny the 2nd half adjustments in the uF and USF games. UF 38 rushing yards, USF -10 rushing yards. We were dominant against the run vs. the gator.

After our defensive performance last year,I don't think even the most optimistic Cane fan expected this defense to be "dominant" game-in, game-out.

Once again Big Al Golden has been proven to be right...Mark D'Onofrio is a helluva defensive coordinator.

No doubt man, but stacy coley is way ahead of where dre was as a freshman, i can tell you that. But from a physical standpoint, you not gone find another dre that easy, it'll be a while, a long while.

But it's good to see the shannon coaching tree(you see crime dawg mcgriff over there with nawlins) and players(jimmy graham, miller, o-yeah) he brought in playing tonight making plays though.

I'm not going to deny the gaytor game, but usF, come on man, they were down by a lot, so they kind of abandoned the running game also. But like i said, we'll see how well this defense holds up and how consistent it is going up against guys their equal physically and depth wise as well as peer coaches. As far as us being dominant, i wouldn't use that word based on our schedule thus far.

It's a damn shame Randy Shannon couldn't get it done as the Canes head coach. As hard as it was for her to do so, Donna Shalala mercifully put Randy out of his misery and allowed him to start anew. Randy is a fine man and hopefully he will get another opportunity in the future and will have learned from his experience as the Canes head man and not make all of the same mistakes again.

Cool Cat....your an idiot....we have beat GT the last 4 years with a worse defense.....

Canes 42
GT - 17

which I believe has him desperate to make a big splash and what bigger splash could he make than slamming a team that many in this country hold in contempt due to their championship football that was mostly accomplished with...gasp!...predominately black football players! To be clear--I am not saying that Emmert's actions are race based, but are ego and survival driven. Again, I desperately hope I am wrong!!!
Posted by: Ron Zook | September 27, 2013 at 04:42 PM

Its funny how when injustice and obvious disparities in treatment hits home--then truth rises up thru bigot's chests like vomit. This NCAA crap has its silver-linings and it is one that the few racist Canes fans we have--should take heed.

"Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere." --MLK. We can't help our beginnings, but they are what they are, there's no need to ignore or deny them. Embrace them, learn from them and move on to the future with a fervor to not allow them to occur ever again, in mind.

Zook the Gator coach, how is it that U are allowed to infuse and mention race in a post on a sports blog, but no one else can?

Injustice doesn't care about race, gender, or sexual orientation. When the chickens come home to roost, now U want to tell the truth and speak out. But when its not your demographic being oppressed then U are quiet and/or supporting the oppressors. If I had made this post--U would have called me a racist because I'm black--and as a black man I can't reference race without being called a "racist" or "playing the race card", but what did U just do?

"To be clear--I am not saying that Emmert's actions are race based, but are ego and survival driven. Again, I desperately hope I am wrong!!!" ---Ron Zook ex Gator coach

^^What does this mean exactly? Why did U bring up race and the NCAA if U didn't mean to make or persuade a connection between the two?

Why do U "desperately hope" U are wrong"?

ALL of your comments are: race, ego, and survival driven. So U know U are right.

Mark Emmert = Ron Zook, cut from the same hypocritical cloth.

U are rooting for yourself to be wrong about your perception of Emmert, because U obviously recognize with him in some way. Why does Emmert get the benefit of doubt, but other Canes fans don't and are oftentimes vilified by U. U don't knoe Emmert like U don't know Us. But U do know that he has led a purposely tainted investigation of our football program, but yet and still want to believe in him.

This is the definition of a "Corporate Cane"--the elites are always right and if they're wrong--it must be an oversight on our behalf. Totally Anti-Cane behavior and sentiments. We have been hijacked by "fans" like this.

U disassociate with your antagonist and oppressor (NCAA, Gator Nation and Emmert) in word, but assimilate and agree with them in action.

PREDICTION: When Zook the Gator Coach sees my post he will immediately attack me personally and not the substance/points made in my post.

He'll deflect and neglect to defend his sentiments or address any of the questions posed to him about his Mark Emmert comments.

He'll twist my motivations and negatively interpret my character (discredit the source--strategy learned from incessantly watching Fox News) to evade the questions at hand.

Harriet--you cowardly twat...you've been trolling your arse off today hoping to get a beef going. Here's the thing stupid...everyone sees through your spineless act.

Please once again regale us with your claims of being a Muslim and your Jimmy Hoffa like discovery when actually speaking to a Muslim cab driver...wow! The only thing more shocking would have been you discovering a Muslim 7-11 cashier.

As for attacking you personally and not the substance in your ignorant posts...you see stupid--there is no substance in your posts.

Now run along junior...you bore me!

PS: I am told you fly a mean carpet!

Calvin is a retard. . Seriously. .. a retard.

Of course Harriet uses the screen name of a slave believing he is her owner and is superior to this brave woman. This vile demonstration of blatant racism should not be accepted by any Canes fans on this blog. Absolutely despicable!

LOL!! See^^

Nice concession speech. Never witnessed a person miss so many points on purpose. How is my faith relevant to anything??? Just another opportunity to be intolerant, ignorant, hateful, and a moron while mentioning the most juvenile of stereotypes. What a self-professed Gator tool U are.

Another racist bigoted clown defeated!

No I'm not....what yes I am.

^^^Here comes the PR repair/opposition smear campaign and deflection efforts to discredit the source by preying on the supposed ignorance of the readers as to the meaning and motivations behind my name usage, which I've explained numerous times. I'm black and U know that--U also know that I use her name out of respect. We've all seen this act and movie before Limbaugh.

Now what we don't understand and never has been explained is your name choice LMAO!!!! Gator to the core, "vile" and "absolutely despicable" fits of course.

New racist good ole boy strategy: Call the other person racist for pointing out the fact that U are. "U are racist for noticing I'm racist" lol--it doesn't work.

Explain your post, why do U hope to be wrong about the NCAA's "Big" Mark Emmert?

P.S. I heard U slurp a mean joint (pause).

Harriet can you back that up?

Also, Harriet using several different aliases posts on various Gator blogs attacking the Canes and telling his Gator brethren that he hopes Mark Emmert hands us the death penalty. He also belittles Randy Shannon and makes fun of how this great man speaks...this is the cowardly Gator way! Again, just look at his screen name where he is making fun of a black slave acting as though he is her slave owner...disgusting!

LMAO!!!

Zook's conscience is B(l)ack sliding in desperation!!! Gator...Gator...Gator..cowardly...trolling...slave owners of this poor brave woman LOL! Public outcry...digusting...redirection....hoodwink...twist...project...discredit...bamboozle....does anyone believe me???...am I exposed??....should I end it tonight...RS is a great man....cheer me damn it!...that sound good enough...."brethren"...I like that tough word...Am I the true Gator...did Willie Lynch's manifesto/plan work on me...what do i mean by "Big" Al Golden???...am I in love??...I hate HTC...but I despise myself more...I should go to bed...I hope I don't wake up.

New racist good ole boy strategy: Call the other person racist for pointing out the fact that U are. "U are racist for noticing I'm racist" lol--it doesn't work.

Harriet can you please back it up?

The girls Calvina and Harriet have applied for new race cards as theirs are worn out. Don't think they'll get one.

What a pair of losers living in the past yapping about poor Randy and some ancient history blog feud.

No one cares. Canes way better this year and no change from you 2 morons.

Canes 4-0. Your turds locked themselves into permanent series losers with s l o w brain Driskell at the helm. Had he gotten injured earlier turds would have had a better chance.

damn Tannehill looks like Driskel at times ...

too bad the Dolphins don't have the Gator's Defense. They might of only lost by 5 points.

.

.

Drew Brees is a bad boy

Harriet, so now if we even use the word balck it is racism let me tell U from a person that grew up in government housing projects ,everyone is racist! We were the only white family in our neighborhood and we caught hell until we pulled guns. That was in the seventies. When i grew up i moved to the country where again everyone was racist. As long as noone gets hurt ,its omk to be racists. I use the N word all the time to my black friends and they dont care. LET IT DIE! And for your gods sake dont teach your kids that same hate U were taught by your ignorant parents. Racism is not a problem anymore. Well, except for U and the media.

To think that the Dolphins could have had Brees throwing to Graham, but they whiffed on both.

Never understood the Dolphins' fear of drafting Canes, when the Canes have been the BEST team in creating NFL level talent.

And of course we can thank Satan for choosing Culpepper over Brees, because he knew he was going to jump ship at the first chance he could after collecting the big paycheck.

That game was an embarrassment.

3rd down and a CHAIN LINK, after Cane Lamar Miller got you there, you run a sweep with the slow back Thomas?

And after Miller had a first down taken away by half a yard on replay, you punt into the end zone?

And next they decide to have the team's shortest rookie cover Jimmy G, while having their big slow guy cover Sproles? Mismatch on BOTH ends.

I know what this blog would look like if the Canes played that stupidly, and I thank God that it was the Dolphins instead.

Someone casted the same line three times, finally got a nibble.

Bad fishy, ignore those worms that look like the letter J, they are bad for you.

Signs of a racist Cane fan:
He purposely misrepresents what someone says or means, only argues one side of an issue, usually for the side that he represents, doesn't know the sequence of events, never provides proof for anything they say but demands evidence and the burden of proof be with accuser, when the accuser provides proofs and details, the accuser is called "a faux intellectual" for being so specific and "caring too much" and later on is told to "let it go", "LET IT DIE" OR "MOVE ON"---but the facts and proofs that were asked for and provided are NEVER refuted LOL!! Its just, "there's nothing to see here...move along...move along..."

EXAMPLES:
1) GatorKiller-- saying that I'm playing the race card (which I predicted he would), but doing so despite the fact that my initial post was IN RESPONSE to RON ZOOK the Gator coaches post that "played the race card." I was asking him why he could post about race and I couldn't without being called a racist. Why know no response to his post? Why no "move on Zook" or "Zook LET IT DIE"???

2) The Fake/Troll Calvin--asking me to "back up what you say? Of course the burden of proof endlessly stays with me, but he'd never ask a guy who names himself after a Gator--for his proofs...ever. Then when I provide the proofs, the scenario above goes into play--proofs go non-refuted, I'm told to move on, called a smarty pants for being too detailed and caring too much, and told to just move on as if I'm not responding tot the utterly covert bigotry displayed daily by these clowns.

3) 21-16--How is "we"? And of course U can use the word "black", its not the word, its how its used. Go read back, I asked Zook why he can talk and infuse race in a post, on a Canes sports blog, but when others do, he refers to them as being racists? What does that have to do with the usage of the word "black"?

BTW, EVERYONE is NOT a racist. Look up the word PLEASE! What U experienced was the product of the self-fulfilling prophecy U and your neighbors enacted onto yourselves by (one example) using the N word. This is the reason why U had to pull guns on each other, because U all were and became the N word, so U behaved as such REGARDLESS of color--someone can be a N-word--thanks for proving that point sir!

Racist- one who believes that his or her own race is superior to others or another's. This is OK to U? If everyone is racist--then U are saying that U are as well--but then U go on to say that I shouldn't teach my children to hate???

I'm confused now lol!

Racism is not a problem anymore LMAO!!!!!!

One question: where/when have I ever expressed a racist notion or statement?

"LET IT DIE"--but U admit to keeping it going (freely using the N-word). Hypocrisy and a racist in its truest form on full display folks.

meant: *anyone* can be the N-word.

Zook brought up race, so please save the one-sided and selective admonishment posts of fake peace keeping by only asking me to move on. Thanks in advance.

Dude, why don't you cuddle up with your blood-thirsty comic book a/k/a the koran, and leave this blog for at least a few weeks.

Five Titles U are powerless on this blog, U run nothing, but your mouth.

U are the new and abused Canegator fan.

Your very existence is predicated upon the existence of your fairytale opposition.

Life is not a comic book Mr. Kent.

Harriet is a racist. Obsessive protestation makes it so obvious.

Dude, why don't you cuddle up with your blood-thirsty comic book a/k/a the koran, and leave this blog for at least a few weeks.

^^Exhibit A: no real refutation or come back. I see U don't read the Bible much lol!

HarrietTubmanCane, I believe I can explain the problem some may have with you as pertains to UM football.

There's a double standard on race in this country, and rightly so - whites aren't the ones who have been oppressed historically. But because of that double standard it's not acceptable for people to have "white pride", that is to support someone just because he or she is white, where it's perfectly acceptable for Cubans to support Rubio or blacks to support Obama purely for their race.

So that's not right or wrong, it's just reality.

The problem is, where any Cuban could make the case for Rubio being a good senator or any black person could make the case for Obama being a good president, it's unreasonable for you to make the case that Randy Shannon was a good head coach.

It's beyond the realm of possible realities, it's completely and un-objectively wrong.

And the one thing that Shannon-supporters can't accept is that UM fans, university officials, and mostly Donna Shalala herself desperately wanted Shannon to be good, partly BECAUSE of his race and the image he represented for the program.

But he wasn't good. He was awful. He couldn't run the program, couldn't talk to the media or fans, couldn't develop players, couldn't win games. Shannon's a true cane and hopefully he'll be back at UM at some point, but he was an awful head coach.

So when you support Shannon and dump on Golden it's pretty clear that it's solely race-based. As I said, that form of 'racism' is still largely acceptable in this country, but not on the internet where people can anonymously tell you their real opinions.

Georgia Tech's offense may be the one offense in the country (besides Navy) that D'Onofrio's defense matches up well against!

Bend-but-don't-break is fine when the other team can't take shots at paydirt.

Here come the guilty!!!! The wagons are circling!!

Lets take names as they expose themselves and support every description and assertion I've already made about them.

They are the best proof.

"Too much protestation of racism makes a person a racist??? Thats a new definition of the word, just like I said--they've changed it lol! "Obsessive" thats quite subjective.

Guys, could we please stick to football? Pretty Please?
