« Five signs the Canes are heading in the right direction | Main | As the Miami Hurricanes offensive line turns -- and other depth-chart drama heading into North Carolina »

Al Golden: QB Stephen Morris "seems to be doing great, making a lot of progress.'' However...

Coach Al Golden spoke on the ACC Teleconference this afternoon, and said his "chief concern'' regarding quarterback Stephen Morris, who has been playing very well the past few games, is getting him healthy for the UNC Tar Heels (1-4, 0-2 ACC) on Oct. 17.

Morris sustained a deep right-ankle bruise against Savannah State on Sept. 21, and as of Saturday against Georgia Tech it was hurting him pretty badly. Golden said after the victory that Morris always reassured him that he was fine whenever the coach asked leading up to the game, but that he obviously wasn't.

"We've held him out the last few days,'' Golden said. "We're being more aggressive in the treatment schedule, which we can be because we're not working on North Carolina yet. He seems to be doing great, making a lot of progress.''

Then, Golden added: "I'm not taking Stephen for his word anymore. I'm going to make sure myself that he's OK. Hopefully we'll get him OK here in the next 48 hours or 72 hours and get him ready for game week. There is no question he's been playing good football for us.''

*** Wide receiver Rashawn Scott (shoulder/collarbone) is also "doing great,'' Golden said. "He's close. He's running routes full speed and doing all that. Whether he's able to take a hit yet, I don't know. But he's running routes and doing all the non-contact stuff and looks pretty good.''

*** North Carolina coach Larry Fedora said he'd grade the performance of backup quarterback Marquise Williams "a B-, C+ type of situation'' in UNC's loss against Virginia Tech. Usual starter Bryn Renner did not play after sustaining a foot injury Sept. 28 against East Carolina.

Williams, a third-year sophomore, completed 23 of 35 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions. He also ran for 56 yards. Renner has already said he wants to play against Miami.

"Every rep that you get in a live situation is very important to any player, whatever position, but especially at the quarterback position,'' Fedora said. "He will just get better from that in the future.''

Golden said he'll prepare for both.

"I would suspect Renner will be back,'' Golden said. "He's one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and he's had an awesome career. So I'm sure they're happy to get him healthy.

"But we're going to see both in the game, and we'll have to get ready for both.''

***  UNC tight end Jack Tabb, who started at linebacker last Saturday against Virginia Tech and played both ways, is suspended for the first half of the UM game.

He was ejected with 4 minutes left for throwing a punch during a kickoff return.

"My version of the play was that Jack was retaliating to something that happened on the play, which you can't do,'' Fedora said. "Jack made a bad personal decision, and you have to be able to keep your poise in a situation like that, and he didn't do that, and therefore he was punished by the rule. That's really all there is to it.''

Tabb had just returned from a two-game suspension for violating team rules.

The thing about "fans" like Calvin is they so desperately want to be right about their ridiculous opinions, they rather the team lose instead of maturing, improving and winning like they are.

Sad really.

Peaceful and polite response to miramarcane. No profanity, insults, or lies within. The reaction of the name changing troll?

We have the trifecta of lies, profanity, and insults. Exact proof of who is in the right on this issue. Add to that illiteracy, child-level insults at someone's mother, and 24 hour obsessive attacks, and you see why folks are no longer on the other two blogs. Why would anyone without a thick skin and a sense of justice continue posting while someone attacked Canes fans relentlessly like this.

So, miramarcane, as much as I would love to avoid him, ignore him, and forget him, his daily obsession with this board as long as people post here makes that impossible. Add to that his changing IDs and escalation of attacks makes it impossible for others to avoid and ignore him, too.

Back to UNC. Do you think they regret removing Butch Davis? After all, they got a light sentence that likely would have been the same with Butch there. Now they have this Fedora guy that has gone 9-8 with them, and pretty much seen them already knocked out of ACC title contention.

Not saying he is a bad coach, just that Butch was better and they would not be 1-4 if he had remained.

I think they regret removing Butch, we all know what he was capable of doing if given time.

UNC has potential, they just need to recruit some studs.

Someone on here already said it...Thursday games are dangerous.

Miami MUST beat Va. Tech to win the Coastal Division! Va. Tech will not lose more than one other conference game, if that. Miami can lose to FSU but not to Va. Tech!

The fact is Stephen Morris gives Miami the best chance at winning. Every player wants to play on Saturdays. Keep in mind that every football player plays with pain because they want to compete. I really don't think that Coach Golden will hold that against any player that wants to win games. Rick can go be a South Carolina and Clowney fan, people that uses excuses not to play.

If you think you're that smart (inspector clouseau), to think i'm going to waste my time posting under different names, keep on having at it thinking you're breaking/cracking more clues.

Yes Calvie, I am that smart, but the bigger point is you are that dumb to believe you are fooling people on this blog with your screwball efforts.

J12 didn't go to the NFL isn't an indicator of whether or not he was a good QB? This is your most interesting comment since Muschamp has more swagger than Golden.

Look, the NFL uses college football as a free farm system. NFL teams have people get paid to seek out talent in every inch of the country. These people look at players from Alabama to Aoo St. If you're at FAMU and you can play, they know about you.

These people evaluated everything Jacory did and said he can't play, so he's not worth the monetary investment. Same thing they are doing with SMO now, only they are saying that he can play and he is worth the investment.

So who knows more about evaluating who can play and who can't than the dudes who get paid to do it for a living? You? Gallo?

Calvin thinks Jacory belongs in the NFL cause Randy Shannon said he did.

The funniest thing is that he spends all summer talking about how Golden doesn't know anything and then comes back using him as the backbone of his Jacory is good comment.

Ryan Williams was here before Coley, so not sure where that came from.

I like Williams. I thought we would've been fine with him starting against USF. Not sure why Golden chose to put Morris out in that game.

Golden needs to quit it with the whole Morris didn't tell us he's hurt. Watch him try to handoff to Duke, you can't tell he's hurt? If Morris is seriously hurt then Golden needs to sit him and prepare the team to play the next few games without Morris.

I don't believe that anyone is saying Morris or Williams is terrible. Just that Morris NEEDS to step aside if he is under 80%. Williams could have stepped in on any of these games and still won. So Rick might be a bit loud, but he is right. Team comes first. Like when Vinnie Testaverde chose to call out of a running play to instead toss an interception to ruin our title chance that year. It is the reason he is not thought of in the level of Kelly, Kosar, Walsh, and Dorsey.

Hey Five agreed on that bone head move by Vin.

However as one of the thinking QB's who had the style and work ethic of the 'U', Vin outworked and outstudied so many others that he lasted many years in the Big Show.
Kelley yes, Kosar not so long, but he stepped on stage where Walsh and Dorsey failed to tread, so IMHOP he is thought of as a talent who played the longest in the NFL, and a 'Cane through and through so he is thought of as one of my top QB's from the U.

Definitely Vin cost us a ring but what a competitor and a strong guy with an arm.
He put us on the map and kept us there through the hey day of 'Canes against the world with his teammates.
Vinny is what we call "one of the good guys from the U."
I fully expect Calvina to retort that Jpick was better but we know the truth on that one.
Go 'Canes.

Apparently you didn't understand my post so i'll break it down for you. Because some of those same people who get paid to evaluate college players are some of the same ones who drafted guys like tony mandarich, ryan leaf, jamarcus russell, heath shuler, or are the same guys who trade for back-up qb's on someone else's roster and pay them top dollars to be their teams starter, so your point is pointless. Here's more proof why, was the fact that gino toretta basically did nothing in the nfl render him non-effective in college or something, how bout these guys, jamelle holieway or tommy frazier. tim tebow helped the gaytors to win how many national championships, but even while winning those titles everyone knew his skill-sets were going to be hard to transfer/translate to the nfl, the fact that he's not in the nfl now is that now an indictment on his college career.

If you're going to post, at least have enuff integrity to post real Truth. Several scouts thought j70 could actually play in the nfl. When it comes to the nfl, it's easy to see why j70 couldn't be a full-time starter in the nfl, but he could definitely come in and possibly when some games for you every now and than but who cares about that, he wass an effecive college qb.

Sorry Rick, but unless you're Stephen Morris, the guy he claims fouled him, or Jesus Christ, you can't say it didn't happen. Especially since you RECORDED it. C'mon man! Television doesn't capture every inch of footage at every second. Impossible for you to know that what he said was unequivocally an untruth. You sir, should apologize to Mr. Morris.

I've seen it time and time again in pro sports where guys take cheap shots, and that's just the fraction of the stuff caught on film. There's an unwritten rule in sports that you never call out the dirty play.. Like when that guy stepped on Ricky Williams on purpose in the Bears game to tear his pectoral muscle and Ricky said he didn't think it was on purpose. B.S. Or Karl Malone splitting Isaiah Thomas to the white meat in the lane. You always take what is considered to be the "high road" in that instance. It's a manhood thing. Suck it up and get them back on the field. But I like the fact that Stephen spoke out and let be known he was none too pleased.

That's why I like this kid, moxie to go with that talent.

The evaluation process has improved in the last decade, that's why you go back to Mandrich. You see recent qb busts? Like guys who can't even be backups? Because that's what they thought about your boy. The scouts hit way more than they miss.

Tebow stated in for 3 years. That's about the average, no?

I just defended Tebow. ..damn.

golden is an idiot.....watch GT game from LA, cali.....team offense is awful, sorry.....offense wins because of weak teams UM has played......any other REAL team UM would have 2 loses already....

golden is afraid to put ryan in as QB....golden is right about 1 thing...that this teams hasent shown anything yet......exactly the 4-0 Maryland statement before they faced a real team (FSU) and got slaughtered 63-0

Let me help you understand. Ken Dorsey, excellent college qb, little arm talent, sees filed, great, great leader. A team took a chance to see if he could play. He hung on rosters, started, faded out. So Jacory, similar arm talent, no nfl chance. Can't see the field, cant lead, not worth the investment.

Teams look for talent. That's why they take Matt Cassell even though he never started in college. He showed someone something, so they take a chance. That's why pacman jones still plays.

The evaluation process hasn't improved much, the defensive rules in the nfl have changed most, which is why you seeing all this early success from alot of college qb's now. Just like the nba came up with all the no-hand checking rules and the defensive 3 sec rule only to cater to the influx of highschool talent coming into the nba could actually flourish some while they manufactered superstars, so it is with the nfl & the qb position, the majority of the rules that have been changed favor the offensive players, so of course more qb's are going to have success earlier in their careers now than ever before.

Back when teams were allowed to play real defense, alot of these qb's would've had to sit out at elast 1 year or 2 years before taking over. In the nfl, it's like all the qb's are being treated & protected like they're playing in a 7 on 7 tournament, so of course we're seeing alot more early success. I went back to mandarich because he was one of the main players that people like you would have said was going to be a real superstar because the scouts said so, only to find out, and i was one of the ones among many in Miami who said that guy was garbage before he got drafted, we know football down here, it's just me.

Funny how your eval is similar to their eval.

Jacory Harris
School: Miami-Fl
Position: QB
Bio: Three-year starter who finished with 65%/2486 yards/20 TDs/9 interceptions as a senior after posting junior totals of 54.8%/1793/14/15, when he missed three games with a concussion. Posted career-best numbers of 59.6%/3352/24/17 as a sophomore.

Positive: Athletic college quarterback who must improve his overall game. Patient in the pocket, knows where his receivers are on the field and natural looking off the safety. Scans the field searching for the open receiver, displays a sense of timing on throws and has adequate accuracy in the short and intermediate field. Possesses a solid arm, throws with an over-the-top delivery and puts touch on throws when necessary.

Jacory Harris- QB- Miami

6-4 200lbs Junior

2008- 1195 yards, 60% completion, 12 touchdowns, 7 interceptions

2009- 3352 yards, 59% completion, 24 touchdowns, 17 interceptions

Harris has above average arm strength. He can get the ball down the field and delivers the ball on a line in the intermediate passing game. Even with poor technique Harris delivers a very catch-able short ball. He throws his receivers open giving them the opportunity to create in space. Harris has the tendency to over throw his receivers on long passes. However, he did show the ability to deliver a very nice bucket pass. He also can get the ball to his target on a line when needed. Harris keeps his eyes down the field when faced with pressure. He has the quickness to pull it down and gain yardage with his feet. Harris is a quick and athletic quarterback with just enough lateral mobility to make defenders miss. Out of the pocket Harris can out run most linebackers but he isn’t a speed demon.

Team offense hasn't executed well. Balls dropped/overthrown and Duke has laid it down a few times. They will get better. Offensively Morris needs to play with better tempo, go through his progressions, and use the TE/RB for check-downs to keep the team moving. A 3 yard pass can turn into 6 by falling down... I think this is a scheme thing that Coley should address in tandem with Morris.

awful is a bit dramatic.

Did he get drafted? Why not?

Is he even starting in Canada?

I hate talking about Jacory like this, he seems like a nice kid. He could've gone anywhere and chose Miami. But you just have to keep bringing him up to slam Morris.

Morris isn't perfect but he's a great talent and balls out for his team.

I want to see []_[]s run more 2 TE sets with the single back. Get Sandlan and Walford out there in tandem or use G. Edwards as the H-Back with Duke. Get more weapons on the field and cut em loose.

That would be nice. Gus Edwards should be getting more carries. Mixing up looks would also be nice.

100% correct five titles!!!!

I agree that things are harder on defenses now a days. Big hits aren't even that big anymore. I think we'll see some catastrophic injuries as a result of these new tackling rules. I'm not talking acls, but spinal injuries. Defenders are out there thinking too much. Hope not, obviously.

I think scouts are better these days because they are allowed to evaluate/exploit these kids even more than in the past. Can you imagine dragging out dez bryant's family history in the media? That s why I don't fault kids for wanting to get paid.

Sit Morris and Duke out until the FSU game.
If you can not win the next two games with the second
string, goldie and D'O should update their resumes and start looking for jobs.

The biggest detriment to Canes winning another NC is
D'O and his three down linemen, zone pass NO defense, prevent the win crap. Thank God Chickillo had the brains to move outside the DE or tackle and mirror the running back against GT, or that game goes up as a LOSS thanks to d'o.

This coming Sunday the Denver Broncos are playing possibly the worst NFL team ever, the Jacksonville Jaguars.

A raise of hands of those who think the Broncos sit Peyton Manning and Wes Welker. Anybody? Didn't think so!

Cane Fan 72--you, Calvina and Gallo, this blogs 5 O'clock Charlie would be crawling over one another to attack Coach Golden if he sat Morris and Duke and the Canes lost or even if North Carolina came close to beating the Canes.

Many things need to happen in between but... am I the only one who wants FSU to lose (Clemson) prior to playing Miami? I would like to see Miami run the table into the ACC Championship game against the Tigers instead of having to play the Noles a 2nd time.

Anyone else thought of these scenarios? At this point I can't see FSU or Clemson losing to anybody else in the Atlantic Division.

The pass that morris throw in the corner of the end zone TD. 7-0. NFL throw
The perfect touch to dorsett as he was getting slammed by Easley. 14-0.
Then, UF adjusted as Golden began to back off to try to eat clock.
Dont know why

Calvin. We realize you are one of those "special" people with low set ears and low IQs.

Morons who would start injured players are begging to lose those players.

Injuries happen when you are not in great physical condition or have a small injury and can not slide off a hard hit.

What if Morris gets his ankle injured on the first play of the next game?

Are you morons and goldie telling us he has not developed another QB to step in????????

Now is the time to rest Morris and other super players to keep them healthy and play second string players to bring them along in the easier games rather than throwing them out there because you have to after morris sustains a more serious injury.

And, I know you morons do not understand this, but football is just a game. No player is going to save the world by having his ankle wrecked for the rest of his life. Duhhhhhh. Stupid MFs. Rest all injured players. They can always come into the game for the second half for one drive if it is necessary.

I'm still in awe that there are human beings as stupid as Rick Gallo the stat boy, Calvina, and 72. A mental institute somewhere has lost 3 of their "special" people.

Miami should run the table. Need FSU to be undefeated when Miami takeover Doak Campbell Stadium. Need quality wins for strength of schedule. Will someone please tell this coaching staff. Do not use the Duke for kick returns unless it's an emergency.Look at some Reggie Bush plays at USC. This is the way Duke talent should be utilize. This team has put themselves in position to make a serious run for the title game .At this point every game is a title game.. Why not win it all.Do you want to be in the conversation or the conversation.

Just win baby

Is it me or is The Oregon Ducks bleeding money? New uniforms every game, unreal weight room, war room, custom locker room, barbers. ???? At least we have new fathead posters in our weight room. WTF?

Less Gator trolls. Thats what a 21-16 win will do. How refreshing.

Yes, oregon's tp is even made out of money. Founder of nike is alumn if i remember correctly. He has pretty much made it his life mission to make oregon a championship team.
