College football rankings out: UM Canes rise to No. 7 in AP and jump five spots to No. 6 in coaches' poll

Last week the news was Miami reaching the Top-10 in the Associated Press poll for the first time since 2009.

Today it's even juicier: the Canes are No. 7 in the AP -- and have jumped five spots to No. 6 among the coaches.

Miami is undefeated at 6-0 (and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) since a harrowing, end-of-game drive culminated in a touchdown with 16 seconds left Thursday at North Carolina.

The No. 7 AP ranking is the highest since Nov. 13, 2005, when the Canes were ranked third after defeating Wake Forest 47-17.

Regarding the USA Today coaches' poll, Miami's No. 6 ranking is the highest also since Nov. 13, 2005, after defeating Wake Forest 47-17.

So, who do the Canes play this Saturday?

   Wake Forest.

You know that coach Al Golden will be intensely focusing his players on that Wake Forest game at noon Saturday at Sun Life Stadium -- because let's face it, everyone else is thinking about Florida State on Nov. 2 in Tallahassee.

Can you say ESPN College GameDay? It hasn't been announced, but presuming everything goes as expected... And come to think of it, what week recently have things gone as expected?

So, what are your thoughts? Are you in any way wary of Wake Forest, which is 4-3 overall and won its past two games against North Carolina State (28-13 score) and Maryland (34-10 score)?

Or are you totally zoned in on the Seminoles?

From what we've all witnessed, FSU is an amazingly good team with a downright amazing quarterback.

The Hurricanes need to heal quickly and take care of business against the Demon Deacons.

How cares about the rankings...doesn't matter. This team is still rebuilding, we're notback.

Those of you that care, the FSU game will give you everything you want. You think wecan compete for a nc, beat FSU.

Right now this team should focus on Wake and leave the rankings to espn.

No respect whatsoever!!! 7th in AP, 6th in coaches is a travesty! Baylor's schedule is weak as hell. Sure you can beat everybody 70-0 when you're playing Wofford each week. Don't matter, we keep winning, the rest will take care of itself.

Miami could easily be a serious contender for the top five and win out and be in the hunt for another NC.

But it won't be because of D'Os worthless three man rush and zone prevent the win NO defense.

Then, there are the injuries from lack of cardio conditioning.

Plus, facing FSU Miami needs to be a brick wall on defense. But with D'O and goldie's poor coaching on defense and conditioning, Miami is not even going to be a speed bump.

I thought FSU looked very good, but I believe our team haven't played their best yet, lets hope they save it for FSU.

We need to focus on Wake Forest, and when we meet FSU it's a rivalry anything can happen. If we want to make a statement beating FSU at Doak will do it.

next season around this time we will be talking about 10 to 15 teams still very much in the hunt for one of the four playoff spots..can't wait ..go U!!

FOCUS,FOCUS,FOCUS ON Wake Forest!!!!! One game at a time......If not Wake will beat us. They have nothing to lose...we do!
Stop talking about FSU until next Sunday morning.

The top 7 can change quickly with a loss. Just keep winning and the rankings will take care of themselves. We survived a tough game at UNC. I thought that would be our trap game but now we have WF up next. Focus on WF, let the media focus on FSU. One game at a time. Go Canes

Great for recruiting and the spotlight that will hopefully be Gameday on 11/2 but... beat WF first and then we'll all get to see how good our 2013 Canes truly are.

As a previous poster pointed out current ranking is hollow until after that huge game. Fans want "respect" from voters then beat FSU at Doak.

As an aside, great game UCF Knights who has a legitimate gripe being no. 25 in the Coaches. Suddenly I wouldn't mind seeing an Orange Bowl game of Miami v. UCF

Be careful of Wake they run reverses trick plays from wideout to QB and half back pass also well coached team.

Sarasota was right. Ok we we move up 5 spots in Coaches poll to 6 and to 7 in AP.

BUT BAYLOR? Guys go on espn n see there schedule. THEY HAVE BEATEN NO ONE. Miami has at least beaten at time #12 gators.......... anyway mizzou, is sec so I thought maybe. but BAYLOR #5? woford, buffalo, iowa state, west virg(suck) crappy teams.

GO CANES

People forget how bad Ohio State looked all season in 2002. Or Notre Dame Last year. We are undefeated and in the NC hunt as long as that stays true. Our SOS will place us there. FSU had a juggernaut in 2000 and we were supposed to be overmatch. We all know how that turned out. This is a rivalry game more so than Clemson. These kids played against each other in HS and have more on the line to prove so their game will be taken to another level. And besides... If we can beat them with INT12, in Doak... We can beat them now, with much better players (and a much better QB).

Deuce!

mizzou jumpin us, I can understand although we were 4 spots ahead, bUT BAYLOR?? ahead of mizzou both polls, and mizzou just beat Georgia and florida.

COME ON. MIAMI WON ON THE ROAD W/o RB and WR

We should be #5 in both polls. BUT YOU GUYS ARE RIGHT. Baylor and Mizzou have hard schedules coming up -no more Wofford, buffalo, etc LOL #5...

WELL FELLAS, IT LOOKS LIKE WE PLAY FSU 2 TIMEs as long as we beat VA TECH.........ACC CHAMP GAME NOW THAT CLEMS LOST WOULD V FSU VS UM EVEN IF MIAMI LOSES TO FSU.........we just need to beat va tech

I agree Dom.

Mizzou earned it but Baylor did not. But, I forsee Mizzou losing to South Carolina this week dropping them out of the picture. I also see Oregon possibly losing to UCLA which would also help us. Baylor will stay ahead as they play Kansas and I don't think Penn State has enough talent to beat Ohio State on the road.

The polls and analysts wont give us any respect unless we prove them wrong. And the only way that's possible is to beat FSU. After what FSU did to Clemson if we went to FSU and knocked them off we would jump an unbeaten Ohio State and Baylor. And barring that Mizzou and Oregon lose like I predict they will eventually. We could very well be #2 in the country behind Alabama.

I don't wanna get ahead of myself though. First we have to take care of business against Wake Forest and if we do so...we have to play ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS against FSU to have any chance. And they would prob have to have a bad game to for us to have any hope of winning. I love my Canes but I'm just being realistic at this point. FSU is farther along in the process than we are. However, we are catching up. Go Canes!

Fsu vs Um, Acc title ,game, 1 team will have 1 loss, my prediction. I say we spank va tech

lets not forget, Had we not missed a FG, blown 2 1st and goals, and had 2-3 picks in UNC territory, we put up 50-55 vs UNC

Injuries from a lack of conditioning? Trolling at it's best.

The MCL tear, Duke taking a knee to the head, I doubt those things had anything to do with conditioning

Nothing new here...for over 30 years anytime the pollsters could screw the Canes they have.

They chose in one poll to jump Missouri over the Canes for beating a team we beat that is a shadow of the team we beat due to all their injuries.

Next, they jumped a Baylor team over the Canes who is playing a high school schedule.

This is why I have had such great concerns about the Canes rankings, because I am certain that even with a solid win over FSU the pollsters wouldn't dream of jumping the Canes over Ohio State and/or Oregon.

Under the heading...'What are you gonna do"...onward to Wake Forest and a 7 and 0 record.

I don't coach or play. So I can look forward to FSU, my focus won't effect the team in any way. UM should beat Wake Forest with a score similar to 45-23. The rankings take care of themselves to a certain extent. The eye test does matter, whether you're undefeated or not, there may be three undefeated teams when it's over, perception will matter.

Minimize the turnovers and the points will add up, we'll be a contender. They have to play there hearts out at FSU. FSU is really good but Clemson laid down and showed no heart. FSU wont beat any decent team 51-14. Sure as hell not Miami, unless the Canes turn it over.

FSU has deficiencies like every other team. It's a rivalry game so effort shouldn't be a problem. Golden, D'Onofrio and Coley better do their jobs and we'll see what happens.

According to Derrick Griffin's tweet, he will enroll on January 2. That's how I interpret it. Anyone see it differently?

Never mind that we should be ranked 5th in the nation...try to imagine the reaction had you told someone prior to the season the Canes would be ranked 6th in all of college football at any point during this current campaign.

It is time for "Canes Fans" to enjoy the moment and celebrate the fantastic job our coaches and players have done thus far.

Don't allow the trolls to steal this moment from you...and even better seasons await us in the future...National Championship #6 will soon be realized.

AL GOLDEN IS THE BEST COACH IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!

Many intelligent answers. The bottom line is WF 1st. Take care of WF FSU will follow. FSU looks unbeatable and should be the #1 ranked team.
Look... any team can be beaten on any given Saturday and FSU is a RIVAL game folks. If it rains on that day remember that rain is the great equalizer as it was on Thursday at Chapel hill... that IS what the announcers said at the start of the telecast.
We should have been ranked higher. The pundits always screw us while they would call the NCar type of game for someone else as "one of those games" you need to win on the road to the Championship.

I FEEL LIKE THE PLAYERS WILL BE MORE THAN READY TO GO AS FAR AS MOTIVATION BUT WHAT IM ANXIOUS TO SEE IS IF OUR COACHES PUT TOGETHER A GAME PLAN TAT ALLOWS OUR PLAYERS TO SUCCEED.COLEY HAS TO SHOW THE SAME PATIENCE WITH THE RUN LIKE HE DID AGAINST FLORIDA AND SET UP THE PLAY ACTION PASS AND GIVE MORRIS SOME CLEAN THROWS.BEATING THAT MAN PRESS WILL BE CRUCIAL IF WE EXPECT TO HAVE ANY SUCCESS ANGAINST THAT FSU DEFENSE.

AS FOR D'NO, HE HAS TO SHOW WINSTON SOMETHING HE HASNT SEEN YET.HE CANT BE OUTCOACHED IN THE FIRST HALF LIKE RECENT GAMES BECAUSE IT MAY BE TOO LATE AS WE HAVE SEEN FSU CAN PUT UP POINTS QUICKLY.HES GONNA HAVE TO CALL HIS BEST GAME EVER.OUR DEFENSE HAS TO BE ABLE TO GET PRESSURE WITH FOUR AND THEY HAVE TO GET STOPS ON 3RD DOWN EARLY AND GET OFF THE FIELD.THE BEST WAY TO COUNTER WINSTON AND HIS WEAPONS IS TO KEEP THEM OFF THE FIELD.PERIOD....GO CANES

well, we should b #5 in both, but Baylor has to play like 2 ranked teams OU and Texas, so there done eventually, Mizzou will lose - 1 or 2 sec games, and the problem is ORE and OH ST with weak schedules.

FSU/Miami will have 1 loss. Even ALA with LSU and SEC champ game might get 1 loss. With Oh State and ORE playing In SUPER WEAK Conferences, they could slide into 1 and 2.........

BCS comes out tonight. I hope Schedule strength drops Baylor way under us. That's what matters. Ga tech rolled this week. UF lost their starting qb, best D players, and mizzou jumping 8 spots is crazy........

Attention sports fans, Wake Forest has come alive in the past 2 weeks. They're feeling good about themselves with renewed confidence and healthy players. WF could easily upset UM if the 'Canes can't get their heads right. Gotta hope Golden prepares this team to buckle down and take WF very, very seriously.

FYI-I agree with U guys above. Maybe as cane fans, we are getting a bit greedy,,,,, We were unranked a few weeks ago and now we are complaining we are not #5 but we are #6 and #7 etc. We all should enjoy after the 5-6 bad years we have had. Even a loss to FSU only keeps us near the top 10 with a shot at BCS........LETS DO IT , JUST WIN

RichmondVaCane,

Completely agree with you. Wake Forest is on a hot streak, we better not look ahead and continue to take care of business.

Zook,
I agree with you. Let's enjoy the moment. Four or five weeks ago were unranked and now we are complaining about being ranked 7th instead of 5th. Keep winning and everything will fall in place.

As Al Golden has said from day one...this is a process.

It is clear that Florida State still leads in talented players having posted 3 top 5 recruiting classes in as many years (Big Al and his staff is in the midst of correcting this situation). Yet, I firmly believe our coaching is much superior to that of FSU, which gives us a real shot in Tallahassee.

In my view, we must look at this season more globally accepting that the FSU game is huge from a national ranking standpoint, but one could argue that Virginia Tech is much more important. When we beat Virginia Tech we will be seeing FSU in the ACC Championship game that will make our first encounter with the Noles seem to be a pre-season game.

I don't know about you, but after almost a decade of frustration I am celebrating the 2013 Canes.

Great comments, the way this blog should be!

Happy with sixth, Missouri earned moving up, and we can't fault Baylor the team for beating the teams on their schedule. Let them have their fun, we are looking for more than an October high water mark.

Go Canes!

UM can't afford to take any team lightly because UM is not a great team. Let's face it Cane fans, UM is not one of the top 10 teams. The schedule has allowed the Canes to be where they are. Would you really want to see UM's defense play against Baylor or many other teams UM is ranked over. I sure wouldn't because I know what would happen. Golden has done a fantastic job and the team has made great progress. He's overachieving with a team much less talented than Fla. State and many others. I hope they can win 10 regular season games. That would be a great year. The defense is doing the best it can, but it will be shredded again this year. It's up to Morris to see this season through. If he continues to make poor decisions, we won't like the ending.

And rightfully so Ron Zook. It's been way too long since Miami gave us anything to cheer about. So I'm definitely enjoying this season as much as I can. When the NCAA finally stops acting like a bunch of pussy's they will finally hand down our sanctions and from there on I see nothing more than progress for this team year after year. By 2015 I believe we will be at the peak of where we want to be. But for now im loving 2013.

A lot of these posts by my fellow canes are embarrassing honestly

I'm looking forward to seeing which Morris shows up the next two weeks. He stunk up the joint at N.C. If he has another game of throwing the ball over everybody's head against Wake, will Golden bench him? I fear not, Goldy seems to want to stay with his Golden boy, pun intended, no matter how badly he stinks up the game. Ryan, in the games I saw him, looks much more reliable and he's accurate on short passes. Also he's not hurt.

Focus on each game...we are still rebuilding. Great turnaround by golden dispute what some on this blog say about him. we would have to play a perfect game to beat FSU...have not seen that yet this year. Even Wake Forest is not a gimme. one game at a time. ICE

Be careful of Wake they run reverses trick plays from wideout to QB and half back pass also well coached team.

All the more reason for four down defensive linemen with the DE on the side opposite of the initial direction to go across the line and follow the play rather than taking a pursuit angle and letting the reverse occur and on halfback passes to mirror the halfback floating wide.

golden cant bench morris....williams is nowhere near ready and could blow the rest of the season....

UM is only where it is because of the schedule...they lose to VT and fsu and they wont win the coastal or play for title....

golden is done....its only a matter of time....these guys are not UM material....morris should be hitting his stride by now....not in a state of confusion....

the qb and wr are not even in sync and the season is half over.....these coaches don't have it, including coley....this is his responsibility at this point....

I see 3 loses and UM not playing for title or division....

Bob,

Al Golden has proven without a shadow of a doubt that he does not play the favorites game and the best players to help the Canes win will start...period...end of story!! Anyone who says differently is not being honest or is clueless.

It might make you feel better about the Canes and yourself if you could occasionally find something positive to say about the great coaches and players of the undefeated, 6th ranked team in all the nation.

PS: At this stage Stephen Morris is still the best QB on the Canes roster...just ask Al Golden, James Coley, Larry Scott, Brennan Carroll, Paul Williams and all of the players.

Injuries from a lack of conditioning? Trolling at it's best.
The MCL tear, Duke taking a knee to the head, I doubt those things had anything to do with conditioning
Posted by: JaxCane
//////////////////////////
Those injuries had everything to do with lack of conditioning because on a injury to a leg, lack of conditioing causeds a lack of quickness particularly late in the game.

A knee to the head is caused by a lazy block instead of a snappy block to the chest with shoulder pads.

Lack of conditioning also causes laziness in blocking such as by holding the other player instead of our blockers moving their feet and not holding. And lack of cardiovascular conditioning causes other penalties like grabbing face masks out of laziness and other stupid penalties.

Like Vince Lombardi and Jimmy Johnson preached, "fatigue makes cowards out of each of us." And dumb'O using his three down linemen defense causes those linemen to be fatigued by the end of the first quarter because they constantly have to fight two or three blockers and try to cover too much real estate against the run and rush the passer.

FSU and any decent QB will pick apart for hundreds of yards a three down lineman/ zone prevent (the win) No defense that D'O uses.

BTW, D'Os prevent the win NO pressure, NO defense all but gave the game to UNC by allowing UNC to move 75 yards in 16 seconds and the UNC receiver was a hair from pulling down the winning TD pass.

But you can not tell arrogant UM fans nor arrogant D'O anything about football. They know it all.

your an idiot gallo, miami is a good team. they beat florida when florida had all there starters. Florida is a bad team now because they are issing 6 starters. Miami played the schedule they are given just like every other team out there. This team is good. we wont win a national title or acc. ill agree there but what al golden has managed to do under the scope of ncaa investigation with this team is amazing. Al isn't going anywhere except maybe texas or usc if they come calling. Although i doubt he leaves at all.

FSU looked better last night than any team I've seen this year, and I watch A LOT of college football. They had a bye week toprepare; it was their biggest game of the year, and they came ready and played their a-ses off.

But...this is college football, and there are two things that will be true every year. 1)Everyone will overact to a big win and 2) every team will have a game or two when they, for whatever reasons, don't play their best.

My long-winded point is, give FSU their props--they earned it last night. But, we haven't played a complete game were we execute in all phases yet. If we do, can we beat FSU? Yes. We could also play like we did against UNC and lose to a Wake Forest a Virginia or anybody else who brings it. And, everyone will bring it because we now have a number 7 next to our name.

Focus on Wake. FOcus on one game at a time, and if there is one we can lose this year and be ok, it's against Florida State. It won't kill us in the rankings , and we can still when the Coastal (and play them neutral site) in the Championship game. Hard to beat a team twice.

Miami needs to work on themselves only. They COULD be so much better but for their own miscues and loopy play.

Folks, Cane7 is Gallo.

he hasnt won any titles yet....UM has not been sanctioned yet and probably won't...so there is no excuse....he loses 1/2 the team next year to graduation.....this will be his best year but will come away with nothing just like he did at temple...

UM is NOT a very good team.....fla gave them the win and so did nc.....

you are too young to remember what a REAL cane team is.....at this point with all these SENIORS UM would be winning every game by 21 points or better with this schedule...

THA [I_I].. How overrated is the Big Bad Sec Missouri was struggling in the Big 12 and now 2 years later there undefeated in the Sec

ss 1-6
fau 2-5
fla 4-3
sfa 2-4
gt 4-3
nc 1-5

what a joke.....#6 in bcs?

14-26....thats funny, and defense still gives up 500 yards to last place team in the worst division in the whole ncaa.....keep drinking coolaid

he (goldie) hasn't won any titles yet....UM has not been sanctioned yet and probably won't...so there is no excuse....he loses 1/2 the team next year to graduation.....this will be his best year but will come away with nothing just like he did at temple...

Agreed, but mostly because neither he nor D'O know anything about defense.

I do not agree. The players on this team are as good as any team in the country. The problem is D'O who allows other offenses to run over his three man down linemen who also can not get to a decent QB. And D'Os moron zone prevent the win NO coverage has Cane players standing out in pastureland so a receiver just has to find an open area to catch the ball with no opposition.

True. But it was coaching such as Howard bringing to Miami Don Shula's playbook on offense and defense. It was big running back offenses that could get you a guaranteed 4 yards when you needed it. It was attacking Cane defenses that lived in the other teams' backfields instead of goldie's and D'Os bending and breaking NO defense sets.
Posted by: Cane7

Gallo STILL living in the 80's. Old n STUPID. Too much parity, and the modern era, the internet, and social media have changed the playing field. You STILL don't get it about conference games do you, IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THE RECORD IS, ANYONE CAN BEAT ANYONE, cept maybe Duke, lol.

People for the LOVE OF GOD, let those RIDICULOUS RANKINGS go, who gives a FLYING F. We have Wake to worry about, and if we win, then we have back to back TOUGH games. Too much on the line to worry about a stupid ranking. That's how you lose focus.

look...low probability that vt loses the rest of its games.....UM WILL lose to fsu.....VT will have better conference and will win coastal....UM will get shut out of division playoff.....

I have no idea what you koolaid drinkers are looking at?

The only way UM can advance to any type of a title is to beat fsu....and that aint gonna happen

bye-bye golden/dnofrio

Cane 7, aka Calvin or Gallo,

PLEASE die
