« VIDEO: Golden, Hurricanes react to win over Wake Forest, NCAA sanctions | Main | Only a few minor defensive changes on Canes' latest depth chart »

Coach Al Golden on Sunday: "I plan on being here for a long time and facing a lot of these games.''

Al Golden was Al Golden on Sunday (just like Stephen Morris always says "Duke was Duke"), as the Hurricanes head into Florida State week and the biggest game of Golden's UM coaching career.

He said  he doesn't pay attention to the rankings. (Note: He often says the only ones he'll notice are at the end of the season.) He said trying to take care of FSU with all those weapons will be difficult. He said the stakes are getting higher as the Canes keep winning. He said he worries every day about his players falling prey to the outside noise (about, for example, rankings or how good or otherwise they might think they are or about how they're going to be in a bowl) instead of concentrating on one opponent at a time.

And he did offer up on his own, without being prodded, that he intends to stay at Miami for a long time. I'm sure all the reporters' ears perked up when they heard that quote. In the long run it doesn't ensure anything, but it was refreshing to hear that from a guy who has brought this program to new (recent) heights.

In terms of what a win against Florida State would do for your program, is this the biggest game since you've been here?

Golden's reply: "They're all big now. When you're winning, all the games are significant. The stakes gets higher as you climb the ladder for sure. There's not much margin for error now certainly as we're closing in on November. We have to trust the process, take our training to the game and everybody do their job and block everything else out, block all the other crowd noise out and focus on what we've got to do six seconds every play.

"I know it sounds cliche, but we have to use our maturity and experience and be able to do that and be able to hold each other accountable all week to invest in it. That's the biggest thing.

"I'm not worried about the magnitude of games or anything like that. I plan on being here for a long time and facing a lot of these games.''

With a No. 7 ranking in the AP poll and No. 6 among the coaches, the Canes have maintained despite pulling out wins in the last minute the past two games. Even though teams have jumped them, if Miami beats FSU it will be in excellent shape. Then again, can you imagine beating FSU and having to play the Seminoles again in the ACC title game? (Or the other way around?)

Either way, just winning the ACC this season would be an amazing (if not next to impossible) achievement.

Briefly, Golden said WR Allen Hurns (hip pointer) is doing well, and he is hoping he gets back S Kacy Rodgers (ankle) for FSU. He said WR Rashawn Scott (collarbone/shoulder), as has already been reported, was cleared for Wake Forest. But Golden didn't say why Scott didn't play. That extra week of healing has to be beneficial.

The BCS standings will be released tonight.

Oh, yes, if you don't know already, FSU has opened as a 21-point favorite over the Hurricanes.

CALVIN AND GALLO's HEARTS JUST BROKE WITH HEARING GOLDEN'S WORDS...

"I'll be here a long time..."

Donna aint ever getting rid of a coach who's making winning teams who also can get good grades.

Something Randy Shannon could'nt do for his kids on both issues.

Keep your ranting up old man Gallo, we're all familiar with the crazy guy on the corner talking to himself....his name is Jim Gallo.

And his tweaker son is Calvin....

We're lucky to have Golden as our head coach.

Chicken man is a joke. Hearing Al say this is music to my ears.

I like turtles

If he doesn't start beating FSU he won't be here much longer. Got to beat your rivals and win national championships at UM or else who cares? Ask Larry Coker who did just that how short the patience is with UM's fanbase who did both of those things yet got a hot seat to fry in for a whole pair of 9-3 seasons.

Nice, and unreadable as usual, of little Jimmy to talk to himself and echo chamber his rah-rah the coaches points on the last blog. Now time for them to actually win a game against a top 10 team for once in the head coach's career here . . .

AL GOLDEN IS THE BEST COACH IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!

Don't worry about Golden beating FSU cause it will happen soon if not this year. Golden has bought himself a right good while of good faith with the job he has done following those two buffoons Coker and Shannon along with dealing with this investigation by the NCAA. I will say those words from Golden are the best news of the day. It will seem nice having a head coach who knows what he is doing here and wants to be here. I for the life of me cannot figure out why anybody would want to be anywhere else than Coral Gables.

Love me some CANES! Lets beat those seminoles...

golden is okay managing the time outs and special teams
and recruiting.

He has a good OC and conditioning program.

But his loyalty to d'o, his idiot dc is insane.
d'o is a jerk who does not know defense.

Miami has a chance to beat FSU, but not with d'os NO defense, prevent (the win) zone cover empty pastureland.

Miami needs:
Four down linemen, DEs to prevent the end run and attack the rollout passer.

LBs moved to within three yards of the LOS to stop the run or QB escape.

blitz on every play, do not over run the depth of the QB, grab his numbers on his jersey and hang on.

man to man in short coverage. two free safeties for deep passes.

On offense, receivers need to go past the first and ten sticks. Make the first downs.

The more Miami offense is on the field, the less the high powered FSU defense is on the field.

So simple, even a caveman could understand.

the last 2 years FSU had way way more talent, with NFL qb ej manuel and loaded NFL defense in 2011 was 23-19 wasnt it? and wasnt last year 13-10 or 16-10 going into 4th qtr??? Just trying to recall

FSU has beaten NO ONE Clemson always falters, almost losing to BC, and Miami beat a UF team at the time LOADED with SAME TALENT AS FSU......

WInston hasnt played speed like Miamiss. U 27 FSU 24

2000 game, FSU went to 3 straight BCS Games and had Chris Weinke , Warrick and that loaded FSU team, Miami coming off 9-4 season in 1999, won 27-24.

Canes win it. WE ALWAYS PULL THESE OUT

U guys do know that win or lose saturday, as long as we beat VA Tech, and finish out we play FSU again in acc title game.(Unless they lose 2 games to acc teams besides miami).

So like 2003 season when we played 2 times(Miami won both). I expect this to be game 1 of 2

Let's go canes!!! I say we beat fsu on Saturday night. We just have to get to jameis...

The more Miami offense is on the field, the less the high powered FSU defense is on the field.

I promise you the FSU defense will be on the field just as long as the Miami offense. And I don't have to live in a cave to know that, 27, I mean 7, I mean 72.

No worries cane nation, wait until Coach No D has 11 seniors starting and 6 seniors in the backup spots, he'll show you how to coach defense. And yes those seniors will be all redshirt seniors, gaining 180 pounds per year in the weight room through UTough. Then they will do what they are taught and we won't give up 400 yards a game. Maybe when we drop 325 pound Curtis Porter in coverage he'll be able to play in space. I don't know about y'all but I can't wait until Quan is asked to cover Rashard Green on a drag route.

And that sissy mentality on defense has worn off on the fan base, " we don't have to win against FSU the V. Tech game is more important" GTFOH with that garbage.

I've watched ever single Al Golden coached game against a top 10 team in his career.

I can tell you right now, I am very concerned about his ability to beat FSU if they are ranked that high.

I have the utmost confidence in the players on the team being able to do so, it's the coaching plan of attack that is troublesome 3/5ths of the time against decent teams with the coach.

Miami needs to pressure Winston on every play or we are toast....the coaches MUST come up with a game plan to show the freshman things he has not seen yet. Different disguises and blitzes. If we sit back in coverage, put the loss down now...Go Canes

by the way, why in the hell didn't Golden challenge the 4 crappy 1st down spots last night? He needs to have people up in the box with a television set...that was mickey mouse...

Well for one when he coached one while at Temple he never had the horses to compete with a top 10 team to begin with and since he has been here he hasn't so that is assessment is pretty much null and void. One could argue that Florida was as much a top ten team as anybody else when we played them since they had all their guys and were healthy and he won that one. U do know it doesn't matter too much at this stage in the rebuilding process how we win just so long as we win. We are winning close games that bode well for a young teams psyche moving forward. Let's see Golden is in his third year and he has already beat VA Tech, which incidentally it wasn't until Butch Davis's 5th year in which he finally beat them. Remember all of those blown leads he had to Va Tech and he turned out pretty good for us.

Whoa, Look who is talking. Our players need to execute what is being called. It seems we have difficulty tackling the last three weeks. Whatever game plan the coaches come up with, if players cannot execute, it is of no use.

We need to be sharp all around next week.

JUST GET TO THE 4 TH AND BE IN STRIKING DISTANCE. THE CANES CAN WIN IF THEY CAN ESTABLISH A GROUND GAME AND GIVE S.MORRIS TIME TO THROW. THE ANKLE EXCUSE FOR HIM IS LONG GONE-IF HE FALTERS THEN IT IS R.WILLIAMS. CHICKILO AND COMPANY WILL HANDLE THE NOLES WE JUST HAVE TO SCORE 27 OR MORE TO WIN-CAN WE DO IT ? I THINK SO.

1 loss stanford even jumped baylor. not that it matters......we win, on the road, we should jump to #3 or #2 you all agree? at least #3

Our coaches know the strengths and weaknesses of our players than any one else. We certainly can win in Tally, if we play Miami football.

I agree BDEVIL. if we can be within a TD or have the lead near 4th qtr we have a shot. Down 23-13 in 4th vs UNC, on the road on nat tv Thursday night game, we pulled it out . GT Game down big. pulled it out. UF game. close, Pulled it out. And Wake game. close , down in 4th, pulled it out.

If Famous Jamies is in a close game, WE DONT KNOW HOW THE FRESHMAN WILL HANDLE IT. AND HE HAS TO LOOK AT THE U ON THE HELMETS< ......U makes a difference 27-24 Miami

Hey Dom, when we win we should jump to 3 in the BCS. There is no way they will put us ahead of Oregon just yet, basically because they don't want us there and until Oregon loses we ain't jumping them. They are kinda like FSU, they are media darlings.

Our coaches know the strengths and weaknesses of our players than any one else. We certainly can win in Tally, if we play Miami football.

If they did we wouldn't play as much zone as we have the last 3 years, or playing all of these 3 man fronts. Maybe i missed something, was luther robinson put on the jim thorpe awards watch list, maybe i need glasses cause i thought i kept seeing him in coverage!

I've watched every single Al Golden coached game against a top 10 team in his career. Of course I didn't have a clue as to what I was watching, because my IQ matches my stunted pecker size.

I can tell you right now, I am very, very, VERY STUPID! I have no ability to think or beat anyone or anything.

I have the utmost confidence in the players on the Florida Gators, it's the coaching plan of Muschamp's attack that is troublesome 3/5ths of the time against decent teams.

PS: I am such a knee knocking coward I won't even use the same screen name and have to hide behind different names with each and ever y new post...SPINELESS I AM!!!!!!

No worries cane nation, wait until Coach Muschamp has 11 seniors starting and 6 seniors in the backup spots, he'll show you how to coach defense.

And yes those seniors will be all redshirt seniors, gaining 180 pounds per year in the weight room through steroids.

Then they will do what they are taught and we won't give up 400 yards a game like at Missouri.

Maybe when we drop 325 pound Bubba Gump in coverage he'll be able to play in space.

I don't know about y'all but I can't wait until Aaron Hernandez is asked to give a speech before the FSU game.

And that sissy mentality on defense has worn off on the fan base, "We don't have to win against Miami, LSU, Missouri, Georgia, FSU only Louisville...oops!" GTFOH with that Gator road-kill.

Little Jimmy Carr, how's chapter 7 bankruptcy treating you? Still broke? Still trying to be a sugardaddy with no money to offer girls half your age? Still changing your blog ID's and then whining like a baby when you get the same treatment turned back on you? Still related to the worst placekicker UM has fielded in the last 20 years? Of course you are loser, that's why you're still bringing up a game from the second week of September on here when November is about to separate the real coaches who deserve their paychecks from the frauds that need to be released at the end of this year or the next if they fail to decide to fire their historically bad coordinators.

Calvin, like you said, took all day to figure out they recruited all those defensive backs for a reason when they had wideouts to cover on the other team. There's not a single skill player on FSU that UM's linemen can cover in zone so if they drop another tackle to try and cover for any plays, it just shows they never learn in the coaching box or on the sideline on that side of the ball.

al golden will not be at UM like he thinks he will.....

randy shannon at this time in 2010:

2795 offense and 2119 defense yards / 27 TD's
his team already played FSU - Ohio state and Clemson

al golden current:

3390 and 2396 defense yards / 31 TD's.......10 TD's were from Savannah state game alone......who did golden play....Fau - SFla - Savannah state

this team after 3 years is no better than the 2010 team which I'll argue was better....

but we fire a cane legacy that was 4 years as a player and 16 years as a coach and was fired immediately after the SFla loss......

if Um was a real #7 teams we wouldn't be 21 point underdogs to not only a #3 team but an in-state rival.....

Its all a fraud.....

FSU 35 UM 0

National title elimination game on deck :

Last time I checked chief, its the players who win or lose the game, not the coach.

I am Little Sally, I'm in chapter 7 bankruptcy. I'm Still broke. Still trying to be a sugardaddy with no money to offer little boys half my age. Still changing my blog ID's and then whining like a baby when I get the same treatment turned back on me.

I'm still related to the worst teams ever fielded in the last 100 years--the Florida Gators!

Of course you I am a loser, that's why I still bring up a game from the first week of September on here when November is about to separate the real coaches who deserve their paychecks, Like Al Golden from the frauds, like Muschamp that need to be released at the end of this year or the next if they fail to decide to fire their historically bad coordinators.

Calvin, like you said, took all day to figure out they recruited all those Gator felons for a reason when they had midgets to cover on the other team.

There's not a single skill player on Miami's team that Florida defensive backs covered in zone so if they had dropped another felon to try and cover for any plays, it just shows the hillbillies never learn in the coaching box or on the sideline on that side of the ball.

baylor leapfrogs over UM...thats funny

OGV you're going nuts! I haven't posted since last night but you're too stupid to pick up that your being played you paranoid freak! The irony is that you've used 6-10 different names since you started this nonsense, I've used mine, plus your "wrestling name", which makes the whole process that much weirder that you actually have a frinkin wrestling name and videos!

/////////////////////////////////

What UM games have you been watching, you're making blank statements like alot of these commentators now who commentate the game based off of what they know of UM histroy instead of what's actually happening.

How many times have you heard the commentators say: "so & so are running outside now to get away from the inside power that Miami has". in other words, your best bet to get yards is to get to the outside, trying to run it inside is where we have the advantage, speed, most teams get there yards on the outside of our defense now, it's been that way for the last 2 1/2 years. We don't use speed no more we're a power based defense, this is why when coach goldie and his minion came in talking that "think players not plays" it was all talk, they couldn't wait to put weight on these guys.

This just in, in year 3 of the shannon rebuild, he beat Fsu!

Robert James Carr, how did you like the day they liquidated this to your creditors on that fine day last year;

http://www.bradenton.com/2012/01/01/3757715_p2_0101-public-records.html

SARASOTA

Robert James Carr, Jr., 3833 Afton Cir., Sarasota. (11-23212).

I heard the house went cheap, it had the smell of a broken down old man of a loser in it depressing the value. At least Roswell, Georgia is nice this time of year though, isn't it little Jimmy?

You should go post about the team UM beat in September on their blog, the adults here who own things outright instead of on worthless credit like yours would like to discuss the rival that's being played in November for real stakes on here and you're making this one unreadable again, like you always do wherever you post, RJ.

Canes have survived first three games of one of the toughest six-game stretches in the country with road games at FSU and Duke and home game vs VT remaining. Hokies' loss to Duke and its possible second loss at 6-point dog BC before UM-FSU game may allow Canes to play totally loose against Noles without VT game (and Coastal title) to worry about.

Canes are a 21-point dog but proved they can withstand adversity. The heat appears to be on the Noles, not the Canes, because of big media buildup for FSU national title hopes and the fact the Noles haven't been hit in the mouth all season. Obviously, Canes' OC and DC need to throw kitchen sink at Noles, pressure Jameis Winston - the third good QB in a row that Canes will face - establish ground game and limit TO's to have any kind of shot against FSU.

Of course, the most notable wild card is Stephen Morris, who tends to shrink at times against solid competition (UF, UNC, Wake, etc.) UM's last two wins came from the ground attack, almost in spite of Morris. The ordinary Morris is going to have to make some big-time throws and limit picks, while the wonderful Winston is going to have to look suddenly ordinary...Not likely. Canes will be going to the emotional well for fourth game in a row, which will too much to overcome. Noles will win 34-17, but Canes will return the favor in conference championship game.

Heres the thing: We can afford a loss here. On one hand, yes this is finally our chance to come out and show we can compete with the top 5 and of course FSU is always huge, but this is a cross over game. If we get past VT (I think we will)we should win the rest of the games relatively painlessly, which would set up for a rematch in the ACC championship unless FSU falls apart. Honestly, all I want is a strong showing. It's not the end of the world to drop one here, but we have to stay competitive. Stay within two scores or so. We won't drop too much in the polls and if we run the table the rest of the way we would get them in the ACC championship. How sweet would that be? Ending their title hopes at the last possible second and stealing the conference title and orange bowl bid? Obviously I'd like to have both games, but I'd be pretty darn happy with that scenario.

UM will not win the acc as long as winston is at fsu and is healthy.....

olsen and williams are weak....UM really has no one at QB going forward....graduation hits UM hard next year....

fsu will be the ACC champs this year.....

Gallo is an idiot. Predicting losing the WF and most of the rest of our games, so take comfort in his prediction for Saturday as he is always wrong.

I thought Calvin's work with the therapist had maybe paid off, but now he is back on his obsession about men's weight. Faster, stronger, heavier, lower body fat % and the entire team passing the conditioning test for the first time is somehow lost on that pea brain.

"The outside noise" say FSU is 22 points better than we are. I would think that would be a powerful motivator

Why do people go off vegas points? Its about money and betting not real football....they just pick a number and start adjusting day to day.....I think the Canes can win! We beat the gators and exposed their offense and vegas had them favored.

Hernander...U should have been a comedian instead of a killer. U are funny and U got caught. Should have....

This game will be more mental than anything else. Some of the kids know each other way back to pee-wee football. Miami has some players that FSU wanted and vice versa. I give Florida State the edge at QB and at DB, but at RB and WRs, we have the edge. Miami DBs just have to cover 6'5 Benjamin.

Take the Canes and the Points. These Canes are like old, they never quit! They can play hard all game and more, well conditioned. Will come back to beat FSU. Remember the 31 point comeback against Michigan years ago, this team is like that.
GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those who knock Coach D need to check the stats. The D has been lights out after the first quarter of every game including the last 3. If teams are going to score on the canes they need to do it early becuse adjustments are made and points are exceptiona;lly difficult to come by. The D has kept Miami at 7-0.

It's great to be optimistic, but reality is we have little chance sat. night. Morris ,unless he's playing possum, has made us a one dimensional offense. We cannot beat FSU, like that. 7-0 is totally unbelievable anyway, no one would have gave UM a chance for that this year. But I hope Golden makes sure the players don't throw it all into this game, we need to win the 4 after that, more than this one. Rivalry or not, beating VT, Duke and the next 2 get us into the ACC game.

Keep in mind, Vegas lines are set according to how the oddsmakers believe the betting public will pick. They try to get 50% bet on FSU and 50% bet on UM and then keep the juice. The line is then adjusted according to the bets made during the week leading up to the contest. It is not based on what they believe the actual outcome of the game will be. This is a rivalry game. I don't think we lose by 22. Our key to beating the spread is stopping the home runs.

Money Line!

Canes shock the World on Saturday.

Wide Right IV

Miami 28 FSU 26

FSU will get their points, Miami MUST get theirs. Morris has to play a better game, or it could get ugly quick. Clwtrdan is right, don't give up the cheap scores. It is exciting to see the program winning. We still have a ways to go to challenge for Nat Titles, but the depth and talent is getting better. As they get better, it will raise others to play better around them. GO CANES

Cane72, it is impossible to have 2 FS on the field at the same time.

WestCoastCane:

Actually, Randy Shannon was excellent at seeing our student athletes graduate on time; if not mistaken, it may have been even higher than it is currently - don't get it twisted. I'm not sure if you are an actual alumn, just pretending, or a wanna be; but leave RS' name out of the conversation. RS' time has passed and no matter what you or others may have thought of RS, he was/is a true Cane. Get over yourself.

Thanks
