Dorsett will miss 4-6 weeks with partial MCL tear; Duke, Rodgers injuries not serious

First the bad news: Hurricanes coach Al Golden said receiver Phillip Dorsett has a slight or partial tear of his MCL and it's a 4-6 week injury.

The good news? He could be back for the end of the season and none of the other injuries sustained in Thursday night's win -- running back Duke Johnson or safety Kacy Rodgers -- appears to be serious. In fact, both could be back by the Wake Forest game.

"Last night it did not look good," Golden said of Dorsett's injury. "We're all relieved and I know he is. We're all disappointed, but he'll go through the adversity and be back. Certainly it could have been far worse."

Rodgers, who injured his ankle in the first quarter, is going to be monitored in the next 72 hours. But Golden said it looks like Rodgers will be okay. "I think the nine days off will help," Golden said.

Golden said Johnson was taken out of the game by doctors after taking a knee to the helmet and because of his history with migraines.

"He looked very good today, very positive today watching film," Golden said. "We're still evaluating him whether it was a blow that triggered a migraine reaction or a level 1 concussion. We're evalauting that. Because of the time that we have and the way our doctors reacted, it was great and did not cause any additional injury."

> Golden said safeties Rayshawn Jenkins and Deon Bush "both had deep thigh contusions, but they're both good today."

> Golden also said receiver Rashawn Scott (shoulder) has been cleared and fullback Walter Tucker (ankle) will be fine to go for the Wake Forest game.

"I think he's going to give us a huge, huge lift here," Golden said of Scott. "I'm excited about what Rashawn can give us. He had a great spring for us."

> Asked if he gave any thought to pulling a struggling Stephen Morris on Thursday night Golden emphatically answered me: "No. No."

Did Morris convince him to stay in the game?

"He didn't need to convince me," Golden said. "I saw him in the huddle there at the end, those last couple drives. I saw that look going into that last huddle. He had command of that huddle. I actually left the huddle because of it. He was talking to those guys. I knew James did a great job settling him down, saying okay these are the 3 or 4 routes we're going to run. He felt comfortable with it. They were doing some things that obviously caused him some difficulty in addition to what he was battling physically. James got him settled down, which I thought was awesome He threw those last three or four balls with great confidence and rhythm and timing. Obviously, it was the difference in the game. You have to trust your gut in those [instances]. There's no question Ryan Williams can win games for us and is really improved and we're excited about Ryan. But this was Stephen's time and I just felt he was going to lead us to victory certainly at that point, given that environment and where we were, 91 yards away. Stephen was the guy who was going to give us a chance to win."

FWIW... that CANEZ1 at eoth is now saying THE DUKE is too " S-O-F-T! " Imagine that.

This same BULLY canez1 said... " he hopes the Canes can hang with the big boys ( Florida Gators. ). Go bloody figures'.

No wonder the VAST MAJORITY of major college football fan-dom DON'T have no respect for Miami, Florida Hurricane football loyalists. LOL

Because with NEANDERTHAL morons like CANEZ1 and his henchmen, who would respect Hurricane partisans.

Yeah, yeah that canez1 only reflects approximately 55% of Cane partisans and what not. So what.

You can't be serious, if he's calling duke johnson soft, he's still full delusional mode. He use to be on point most of the time, but somewhere along the line he got snake bitten and started riding with b.s. He's been crying for smo17 to be the starter for the longest and got pissed when coach goldie named j70 the starter when me and b.g. kep telling em who was the better qb, coach goldie came in not wanting to start j70 but j70 made him a believer too.

Insanze1 just needs to be slapped back into reality, his blind allegiance to coach goldie and his minions is comical.

If we can see that the tapping by the o-linemen to each other is putting the o-line at a disadvantage, why can't he being the headcoach see that, and get that corrected, who cares if it cuts down on false starts, it's creating penalties elsewhere like holding and face-mask penalties. Which i'm proud of the o-line guys for doing that for trying to keep smo17 upright but caoch goldie needs to stop trying to put team penalty rankings over what actually needs to take place on game day.

HE's a "B-level" QB at best....

JUST IS WHAT IT IS...

We just need to ride this kid to a 10-1 or 10-2 season and see what we look like with WIlliams for next year.....

REALITY IS REALITY Cane Nation..

________________________________________________________________________________

As far as the Manning Camp and SMo ability, there's no question he can make all the throws. So stop talking about his passing tree and inability to throw a short pass. That is an asinine argument. Guys need to catch balls that hit them in the chest and hands. He's had far more drops on perfect passes (like to Hurns on that drive-killing 3rd down play) than anyone cares to speak of this season and last. Catch the damn ball. The best QBs in the world throw like SM17; Luck, Rodgers, Cutler, Farve, Marino, ect... Bottom line is you need people to catch the damn football.

"B-level", that's more than we ever needed! This is the []_[]. We never needed A-level QBs to win. Ken Dorsey was a C-Level at best but he understood the offense and knew how to get the ball to playmakers who caught passes no matter what.

If you believe SM17 has regressed this year you need to think about why that is. How about a new offensive coordinator/QB coach? There's is a certain comfort level with the offense that makes a guy like TB look really good and have the ability to make back-shoulder throws when overplayed by defenders, or hold it an extra second on the blitz to bypass the hot-read for a corner route TD.

This is the kid's first year in a new offense! I'll ride with this kid wherever he takes []_[]s because I believe he's gonna be big when needed most, just like that final drive on Thursday night. After the game he had, to make those throws with confidence at the end, that says more to the scouts than anything that happened in the previous 3+ quarters of football. He was nails at the end.

He was simply trying to do too much in this game and Coley should call a more QB friendly offense instead of these long-developing plays ALL THE TIME. Where is the slant? Where is the 3 step drop?

This is a OC issue. Coley has the talent and is not utilizing it well. Remember also this is Coley's first year calling plays. All this factors in.

The great thing is, as Al said, "He's allowed to learn...and we all support each other.."

That's great leadership and that's []_[]Football. Don't care what anyone says, this is a damn good team and miles better from top to bottom than any team in the last 7-8 years.

Fan []_[]P!

I AIN'T FROM ANY OTHER BLOG BUT THIS ONE...

BEEN HERE SINCE 2010 HOMIE... look it up.

I love my Canes...

But i'll call out crappy players when i see them. Just like i did to Jacory Harris...

And i back up my statements with examples from the game....

And i've been a HARDCORE CANE FAN since i attended UM in 1988 all the way through Grad and Post-Grad in 1999... 11 years AT UM.

I watched Steve Walsh practice corner endzone fade routes to Cleveland Gary from my
dorm room every afternoon... with Coach JJ watching them. They won NC's on the fade and every other school started copying that play after...

Don't start accusing people of being trolls when you haven't spent enough time here reading comments from the veterans, ROOKIE....

For most of the game Thursday night it was like a jail break as North Carolina defenders flooded into the UM backfield and hurried Stephen Morris, forced him out of the pocket or hit him.

The pressure, plus the gambling and stunts in the North Carolina secondary (a Bud Foster specialty that we will soon see again) destroyed the timing of our passing game.

Once the Canes went to the running game on their last drive of the game Morris was allowed more time when he did pass and he threw darts to his receivers.

Get the pass protection figured out, which will require more of a commitment to the running game so the opposing team isn't rushing the passer with no fear of the running game and Stephen Morris will torch FSU, Virginia Tech and anyone else he comes up against.

stop bashing J12, he was a very good QB. he just didnt have arm strength. when the receivers didnt drop the balls or run the wrong route it was receivers not fighting for the ball. remember 2 yrs of Patrick nix caused allot of damage. 4 years 3 OC, not good. if J12 came in under al golden he would have been a star like his high school backup is, teddy bridgewater

Posted by: WestCoastCane | October 19, 2013 at 01:20 PM

If you know football, you know our biggest problem is receivers (and most recently RBs) holding on to the ball. We have TEs that can't catch. Guys like Beard, Moss, Winslow, Johnson, Wayne who would simply catch the ball and lay out if needed. We don't have guys like that anymore. Our TEs (a QBs best friend) have been garbage. Haven't had one since Olsen.

So you can jump on Morris all you want, but you put him with any of those great teams and he would produce. Lay off the kid. He finished last season extremely well and no one had anything to say about him at the beginning of the season. He has a very bad game, now everyone is all over him? He's not the root of the issue. I'm not saying we are the best team in the NCAA or the best offense in the history of the program, but we can be very good.

Newsflash, with SC in an early battle with the Vols and Louisville's loss well Miami ain't dropping in the rankings and it wouldn't surprise me if they rise tomorrow morning as well. Go Canes!

RANKINGS DON'T MEAN SHEET guys....

Beating WF, FSU and VT is what matters...

We don't have the FULL TEAM needed to win an NC this year, so accept that fact.

EVEN IF we went UNDEFEATED this year, the pollsters HATE US and will rank us below a 1 LOSS LSU, OR, BAMA or FSU team anyways....

FORGET THE RANKING...

ALL WE WANT is to beat FSU, VT and win the ACC Championship... which is our BCS this year.

NEXT YEAR.. the sky's the limit.

Senior and Juniors all other place and Ryan Williams at QB should give us our FIRST solid shot at BCS championship since 2002....

Never seen so many negative comments from "fans"
We won the game! Alabama gave up 42 points to A&M. But their fans were ecstatic about the win. They didn't complain about how many yards they gave up.
Let's come out strong next week at 12:30 and support our UNDEFEATED Miami Hurricanes!

Great post ATL KANE

Miami is not the same team as last of yesteryear teams the name is the same but not the players., every team we play until football is no more will be up for us the sooner we realize this the better,I say open up.the offense with everything we got and dare other teams to stop us and dish the 3-4 d for the 4-3 and attack the ball with all the athletes we have we should be blowing teams away but because we play contain d it leaves theopposopposing qb time to read as the play is developing with no pressure.

ALT KANE...On Point.

The Fans on this Blog and those who are not fans...are spoiled! That is the Miami Culture of I want it all now and I deserve it all now...because I live in Miami...

Just the facts folks...

What Golden is putting on the Field give us the best opptortunity to win now..that is what you want...right...

UM is 6-0! Accept the Win...move on...I know Golden will and has after film today!

I am so happy none of you Coach...your Septic and exactly the type of people Coaches do not want around their Programs...

Sit back and think if you comments just make you feel better or are just the Highlight of you mentally bent passion...

Go Canes!

Bleeding Orange, Green & White!

It's A Cane Thing...You Just Don't Understand!

So...UL with a pretty Loss, USCarolina with a pretty Loss...UM with an ugly Win...

Yeah...I still think I like a n Ugly Win!

You folks are messed up in the head!

Complain, Complain, Complain...unrealistic expectations!

I guess if UCLA were to lose on the road to Stanford...that would really mess you up as UM would be so solid in the Top 10 it would not be funny...

With all that being said, I am not delusional...we do have issues that we do need to fix and keep working on...

I am not saying we are perfect, we are far from it, but this UM Team is so much better than any in the last...Decade! See that is the issue with you all, your brains have aged 10 years or more since UM has been a respectable team...you have 10 years of bad stuff in side of you...that you need to vent out...

Well get over it!

Go Canes!

Bleeding Orange, Green & White!

It's A Cane Thing...You Just Don't Understand!

TALKING ABOUT WHAT'S NOT WORKING WELL WITH OUR TEAM is not complaining...

I gauran-Damn-tee you the Coaches are talking about MORRIS about his poor performance...

Breaking down and understanding what's not working is part of the fun SERIOUS fans engage in because we have learned enough about football schemes to dissect the team's performance.

OF COURSE we want our team to win and they are always "#1" to us. But it doesn't make us UNREALISTIC about the problems we see and what we think should be done to improve...

YEAH THE COACHES make that call, but real fans have BLOGS to express their passion and opinions...

And everyone has a right to them...

Beyond of you who are like, "CANES ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD....IF YOU DON'T SAY THAT THEN YOUR A TROLL!!!!"

For the Gators who have lived on this blog for years taking shots at the Canes...

Missouries Maty Mauk threw for 295 yards in his first career start and Andrew Baggett converted five field goals as No. 14 Missouri crushed No. 22 Florida 36-17 on Saturday and open a two-game lead in the Southeastern Conference East Division.

With starting Mizzou QB James Franklin watching on the sideline in street clothes, Mauk put any doubts to rest about whether he was ready on the first play of the game with a 41-yard pass to L'Damian Washington and then a 20-yard toss to Bud Sasser for a 7-0 lead just 22 seconds in.

Missouri (7-0, 3-0) outgained the Gators 500-151 and became the first conference opponent in 14 games to score at least 21 points against them (The ACC's Miami Hurricanes scored 21 points on the Gators earlier in the season). The Tigers bullied and battered Florida (4-3, 3-2) at the line of scrimmage, sacking quarterback Tyler Murphy six times and flushing him out of the pocket throughout the game.

Yo Gators! 21 to 16!!

The 5 Time National Champion Miami Hurricanes are 6 and 0...undefeated...as you girls will be lucky to be bowl eligible.

I agree with that statement. It's never good enough for some folks. If someone would have told us in April that this is where UM would be at this point in the season we all would have said Hell Yeah!
I have no idea whether this staff can take us where we want to go, but why would you talk about them like they're less than shyt when their record is 6-0?

Go 'canes!

Beyond of you who are like, "CANES ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD....IF YOU DON'T SAY THAT THEN YOUR A TROLL!!!!"

Posted by: WestCoastCane | October 19, 2013 at 04:37 PM

It goes way beyond critique of the team. When you disrespect the team, talk about the coaches like their pieces of shyt, and debate why a 19-20 year old kid is not fulfilling your delusional expectations then it goes way past "fun" for most people who read the blogs.

I hate the Gator's as much as anyone but that loss to Mizz today didn't do the canes any favors. It will hurt the team in the polls as well as UM's SOS.

D'Onofiro's style is bend but don't break and pick your spots. Keep it in front of you and limit teams to 3 pts, if anything. It's not what we are used to in a championship defense, but we don't have Lewis, Wilfork, Taylor or Reed on the field. So this is what it is and it's been good enough for 6-0. Guys are maturing and getting better without losing; you can't ask for much more than that.

If some of you guys know we are so bad, then why are you upset about the way we are playing? If we are not a championship caliber team then what's the point in watching? Why do you get on the blog and criticize if you've concluded we are overachieving? If we aren't gonna compete till next season then just peace out till next year.

Some of you are waiting for the team to lose so you can be right about all of our flaws, which is pathetic. You don't have to be cheerleaders all the time, you can critique, yes, but you all are talking about Jacory and old-style Miami like we haven't won a game.

I agree it's not about national championship at this stage, it's about showing up every week and playing up to the the brand of football we expect from our []_[]. We are much closer to that than we have been in almost a decade, which is something to be excited about. When we get the game-changers like the ones listed above, maybe you'll see a different style of defense. Till then bend but don't break is what it is. Matter a fact if you can't tackle Ebron playing this style of defense then you don't need to be any more aggressive.

Teddy B lost to UCF? Cool Cat and Calvin must be burning their Louisville jerseys. Order some Jameis ones guys.

I hate the Gator's as much as anyone but that loss to Mizz today didn't do the canes any favors. It will hurt the team in the polls as well as UM's SOS.

Sarasota-

I agree with your not helping the Canes observation, but Mizzou will get beat down the road and if the Canes keep wining today will end up being a win/win conclusion.

In the meantime...I loved watching the Gators get pasted.

Bro they're not even waiting for UM to lose to roll out the nonsense. It's impossible for some folks to talk about what ails the team without completely disrespecting the 18-20 year old kids and the coaches.

You're right, who cares if it helps! It was fun to watch! It's unreal how many UF and UGA players have been injured this season. They'll have to play the cocktail party game in a hospital if it continues!

So you didn't watch the game on Thursday night and see those INT's and those throws "sail" over our WR's heads?

Stop making excuses for Morris. Week after week bone head plays. He had 2 weeks to prepare. Missing on screen passes come on . Give Coach D and the defense some love for bailling out Morris. Stop putting your defense in bad situation with bone head plays..This coaching staff has to do a better job with play calling and managing the game. Hold Morris accountable for his play on the field. As I said before this team can win it all this year. You have the talent.Hey that 5 star offensive tackle from Minn. I'm guessing he is a senior. Not quick enough with his feet. Holding call waiting to happen. He can better serve this team and become a No.1draft pick on the defensive side.Nose tackle definitely clog the middle. This will upgrade the defense overnight.

Morris shouldn't have been making the throws, agreed. He's not nearly ready to take on the load that was forced on him when Duke and Dorsett left the game. But they won, and that's what you seemed to miss on Thursday night!

Go 'canes!

No they cannot, for the very reasons that you pointed out.

Just thought after watching Ohio State vs Iowa if we could use the two tight end and three sets that they are using as an extra wrinkle in our O. This would open up a lot of plays, especially when playing Fla. State and VT, as they would not be defending it as part of our arsenal, shown before.

Something to think about as the major Games approach.
Definitely could be put in our bag of tricks, and we have time to work on it..
What do you posters think?
Go 'Canes

Great post Sarasota 'Cane

Looks like 3 top 10 teams will fall, and if Tex Am loses ,that's 4. Louisville, UCLA,FSU/CLEM so that moves us up 2 for sure, So Carolina lost so we move up 3 in the coaches poll as we were 11.

DOES FSU OR CLEMSON SLIDE UNDER US WITH A loss? I say we move up to 7.

The good thing for recruiting is we beat UF, UF OFFENSE IS HORRIBLE, They look bad, and they already have 3 losses.........maybe that sways some players that were on the fence like in the past kids went to UF

"So you didn't watch the game on Thursday night and see those INT's and those throws "sail" over our WR's heads?"

He obviously, had a very bad game. I acknowledged that in my post.

come again.

UCLA lost, So #8 and #9 LOST.

I say we root for believe it or not, FSU, so Clemson gets 1 loss, and then we can beat FSU(hope). but that might be better for us...............so 3 more top 10's are going down before late games

Auburn down 34-31 to tx AM ..........If A and M loses, that means 4 top 10's will lose today after FSU/CLEM game.........I am anxious to see the bashers who vote a 1 loss Clemson or fsu ahead of Miami. I know we played crap, BUT WHO HAS FSU BEAT?

Sorry, but you simply don't understand the game of football...a team sport.

If the offense was putting up 50 points a game I would hope you wouldn't be saying it is all Stephen Morris and not give credit to the game plans, offensive line, backs and receiving corp.

Yet, because the offense is still clearly out of sync it is your opinion it is all on Stephen, which is preposterous. If you watched the game Thursday night and understood what you are watching you would have concluded that Carolina was hurrying most every throw or running Stephen out of the pocket.

Where the problem exists is due to the pressure Stephen either has to throw too soon or too late as he and his receivers are being taken out of their rhythm. This almost always leads to a QB trying to do more than he should, thus the interceptions.

If Stephen had done the right thing and taken 6 or 8 sacks today all of you armchair QB's would be howling about the offensive line. Yet, there again it wasn't all the offensive lines fault as the backs must pick up some of the blitzes. Factor in that since the Florida game it has been clear that teams are seeing tendencies by the Canes offense that is telegraphing plays that has still not been cured. And it was clear and has been clear that once the offensive guard leans over and taps the center the snap will come almost immediately after, which puts the offensive line in a terrible position as the defense has been handed a huge advantage. So again, it is not all on the offensive line.

Did Stephen make a few bad throws not caused by pressure and/or tendencies? Yep! But here's a newsflash for the haters...so has Manning, Marino, Farve, et al!

WHAT CAN MAKE MORRIS BETTER DURING A GAME?

PULL HIM WITH THE NEXT INTERCEPTION AND LET HIM WATCH FROM THE SIDELINE FOR A COUPLE SERIES....

GIVE WILLIAMS A CHANCE TO COMPETE...

NO FAVORITES (like Randy).. NEXT MAN UP...

IN FACT... the best thing to do for Morris to get him ready for FSU is to sit him for WAKE and let Williams gain some confidence...

BECAUSE WE MAY NEED IT AT FSU if Morris starts playing JACORY BALL...

Texas am down 4 in 4th. that's 4 top 10 teams losing after fsu game

CANES WILL BE #7 or 8 come tomorrow

IF WE WIN OUT... WE ARE #4 by the end of the year

C'mon Auburn!!!

Bye bye Johnny!

AUBURN WOn. 3 top 10 teams OUT. FSU OR CLEMSON WILL MAKE 4 TOP 10 TEAMS LOSING

We could move to #6 if FSU loses or Clemson possibly

#7,8,and 9 lost!! We can possibly move to #6 tomorrow

Thanks Sarasota 'cane!

Weather we deserve to be ranked at 6, 7, 8 or whatever becasuse you do not like out DC and our HC and our QB or our 3-4, 4-3 or your just having a bad day, week, month, year or life...

All those teams in front of us LOST!!!!!

So our ugly win is still an WIN!!!!

Kids being recruited look at number in front of your name and if they can get playing time...

This is perfect, even with our flaws...Coaches know them...they will continue to work on them...as long as we WIN...it does not matter!

Go Canes!

Bleeding Orange, Green & White!

It's A Cane Thing...You Just Don't Understand!

Miami will be ranked anywhere from 5-7 tomorrow. Like I said yesterday, if the Quarterback gets it together, we'll really be that good and deserve that ranking. There are no dominant teams in the country this season, just a few really good ones.

could be a mice rise in polls tonite with A&M, UCLA, Louisville losing, LSU is behind, and either Fsu/Clemson going down

Notice how Auburn did not sit back and let Johnny Football walk down the field. They put pressure with their front four. That is the main thing we are missing this year. The ability to pressure with the front four.

We got beat by the run so much last year that we've come out heavily focused on stopping it at the sacrifice of a consistent pass rush. But I'm definitely pleased with the progress on the D and this year the DC is making adjustments at halftime.

Miami could be as high as #6 when the polls come out. But I think Mizzou may jump us. Two back to back wins against Top 25 teams including one on the road is impressive. And how about Duke coming back from 22 down to beat UVA at their stadium 35 - 22!

There are players across the board in CFB nowadays folks. No more stacking players by a few select schools. When we played for the championships in '01 and '02, we were not competing for players against UCF, USF, Louisville, West VA, etc...

About to watch Clemson and FSU. Lets hope Clemson wins, that way they'll probably win their division and we'll see them in the championship game. It's extremely difficult to beat a good team twice, don't think we can beat FSU twice within 5 or 6 weeks. Beat FSU in Tallahassee and face Clemson a week after they face a physical South Carolina team. Could give us a real chance.

Dom,

Don't get your hopes up for ranking, we don't have strength of schedule. Someone on here said it first, Missouri did us no favors by beating uf so badly.

Just keep winning games, they can't say anything if we keep winning.
