Dorsett will miss 4-6 weeks with partial MCL tear; Duke, Rodgers injuries not serious

First the bad news: Hurricanes coach Al Golden said receiver Phillip Dorsett has a slight or partial tear of his MCL and it's a 4-6 week injury.

The good news? He could be back for the end of the season and none of the other injuries sustained in Thursday night's win -- running back Duke Johnson or safety Kacy Rodgers -- appears to be serious. In fact, both could be back by the Wake Forest game.

"Last night it did not look good," Golden said of Dorsett's injury. "We're all relieved and I know he is. We're all disappointed, but he'll go through the adversity and be back. Certainly it could have been far worse."

Rodgers, who injured his ankle in the first quarter, is going to be monitored in the next 72 hours. But Golden said it looks like Rodgers will be okay. "I think the nine days off will help," Golden said.

Golden said Johnson was taken out of the game by doctors after taking a knee to the helmet and because of his history with migraines.

"He looked very good today, very positive today watching film," Golden said. "We're still evaluating him whether it was a blow that triggered a migraine reaction or a level 1 concussion. We're evalauting that. Because of the time that we have and the way our doctors reacted, it was great and did not cause any additional injury."

> Golden said safeties Rayshawn Jenkins and Deon Bush "both had deep thigh contusions, but they're both good today."

> Golden also said receiver Rashawn Scott (shoulder) has been cleared and fullback Walter Tucker (ankle) will be fine to go for the Wake Forest game.

"I think he's going to give us a huge, huge lift here," Golden said of Scott. "I'm excited about what Rashawn can give us. He had a great spring for us."

> Asked if he gave any thought to pulling a struggling Stephen Morris on Thursday night Golden emphatically answered me: "No. No."

Did Morris convince him to stay in the game?

"He didn't need to convince me," Golden said. "I saw him in the huddle there at the end, those last couple drives. I saw that look going into that last huddle. He had command of that huddle. I actually left the huddle because of it. He was talking to those guys. I knew James did a great job settling him down, saying okay these are the 3 or 4 routes we're going to run. He felt comfortable with it. They were doing some things that obviously caused him some difficulty in addition to what he was battling physically. James got him settled down, which I thought was awesome He threw those last three or four balls with great confidence and rhythm and timing. Obviously, it was the difference in the game. You have to trust your gut in those [instances]. There's no question Ryan Williams can win games for us and is really improved and we're excited about Ryan. But this was Stephen's time and I just felt he was going to lead us to victory certainly at that point, given that environment and where we were, 91 yards away. Stephen was the guy who was going to give us a chance to win."

I'm pulling for fsu. Imagine playing them when we're both undefeated.

Dom,
Don't get your hopes up for ranking, we don't have strength of schedule. Someone on here said it first, Missouri did us no favors by beating uf so badly.
Just keep winning games, they can't say anything if we keep winning.

Strength of schedule is an issue, but when you look at Ohio State who is playing an absurdly soft schedule it 'might' be hard for the voters to make that claim against the Canes and ignore the same issue concerning Ohio State.

Im going on logic. Do the math. Gonna be hard for us to not be 5-7. Of course we have to keep winning or it's all for not.

Why doesn't Clemson just move the rock to the other side of the stadium?

He obviously, had a very bad game. I acknowledged that in my post.

come again.

Yeah you said he had a bad game and made a bunch of excuses... people have to catch the damn ball, new offense, OC didn't call a QB friendly game, etc.. I remember a poster on this blog once posted that excuses only satisfy those that make 'em. How true... I prefer accountability

Can we give our oc back to fsu? They are mixing up looks like crazy, very creative.

Sorry, but you simply don't understand the game of football...a team sport. If the offense was putting up 50 points a game I would hope you wouldn't be saying it is all Stephen Morris and not give credit to the game plans, offensive line, backs and receiving corp.

Yet, because the offense is still clearly out of sync it is your opinion it is all on Stephen, which is preposterous. If you watched the game Thursday night and understood what you are watching you would have concluded that Carolina was hurrying most every throw or running Stephen out of the pocket.

Where the problem exists is due to the pressure Stephen either has to throw too soon or too late as he and his receivers are being taken out of their rhythm. This almost always leads to a QB trying to do more than he should, thus the interceptions.

If Stephen had done the right thing and taken 6 or 8 sacks today all of you armchair QB's would be howling about the offensive line. Yet, there again it wasn't all the offensive lines fault as the backs must pick up some of the blitzes. Factor in that since the Florida game it has been clear that teams are seeing tendencies by the Canes offense that is telegraphing plays that has still not been cured. And it was clear and has been clear that once the offensive guard leans over and taps the center the snap will come almost immediately after, which puts the offensive line in a terrible position as the defense has been handed a huge advantage. So again, it is not all on the offensive line.

Did Stephen make a few bad throws not caused by pressure and/or tendencies? Yep! But here's a newsflash for the haters...so has Manning, Marino, Farve, et al!

Close but still not there. No need take 6 to 8 sacks because the right thing to do was to throw it away instead of forcing it. Often, Morris left the pocket with any sign of a guy near him. Those QB's you mentioned didn't play like they were scared to take a hit, nor did they look to take off out of the pocket anytime a guy got near them. The only player on offense that looked out of sync was Stephen.

Also, a defense is going to bring the house often when you go away from the run and there's no threat that you're going to throw it short behind the space that the blitzing Linebackers are vacating. You act like only our offense has to deal with defenses trying to throw a passing game out of rhythm. You adjust, audible out to a 3 step drop instead of a 7 step drop, you throw shorter passes to get the ball out before the blitz get there... Stephen took off running and forced balls deep always looking for a home run. He had what I hope was his worst game of his career because we can't afford another performance like that out of him!

I apologize Ron Zoom. I don't remember Manning, Marino or Faurve playing for the U. But to answer about Morris and team sport if you are going to hold everybody accountable shouldn't the QB be held accountable to. Is he not the leader and the face of the football team. I'm not just looking at Thurs.game. In my post I iincluded playcalling and game management. Your play on the field will send negative vibes throughout the locker room if it's not address in a responsible manner.Steven Morris is a college QB treat him like one. He will be a Pro soon enough. He will not progress if we keep saying it's okay we won anyway. Mr.Zook I believe you want Morris to play better as well.

Yeah I'm watching the FSU/Clemson game too and FSU is mixing it up and keeping Clemson off balance. They run it inside, run it outside, throw it long, throw it short and move the pocket. All with a true freshman QB. If he throws a few picks, I wonder if the Noles homers will start making excuses about him being a freshmen learning a new offense and Clemson blitzing?

Whoda thunk after our Canes' "ugly" win they could wake up on Sunday morning no. 5 in the nation. Ugh, how I love College Football.

Next up Wake Forest which I guess isn't a week off seeing that they pasted Maryland today. It'll be fun seeing the U warts and all amongst the elite. They're not there yet and perhaps not even close but who gives a $hit, let the kids enjoy it.

Go Canes!

Looks like we're a pick away from finding out.

We need FSU to play like how we played the last two games if we are going to beat them. The freshmen QB gets flushed out of the pocket, sees nothing deep and dumps it off in the flats for a first down... young man is wise beyond his years but he's still a freshmen and will eventually make freshmen mistakes (preferably all against us).

10/18 at 10:25 pm... That was the biggest drrool, bs, crapfest in the history of the internet- the self promoting king of garbage.

Calvin you are a piece of garbage

To even suggest that Stephen is afraid disqualifies anything else you have to say and is a cheap, unfounded comment. That kid is fearless and tougher than nails, which he has proven many times.

Only on one play did Stephen leave the pocket when he should have stayed put.

When you say that the only person out of synch was Stephen just means you didn't understand what you were watching.

Stephen is throwing the home run balls because that is what the offensive coordinator called. Were their instances when he should have checked down to another receiver? Possibly. But his reads might have told him differently. Was he being confused by the schemes thrown at him, thus the misreads? possibly. Was he being harassed most of the night by the Carolina defense forcing him to throw sooner than he wanted to or later than he wanted throwing the timing off with his receivers? Absolutely!!

The instant Coley went to the running game on a consistent basis is the instant the throwing lanes opened up for Stephen and then he threw laser strikes.

Seriously, not trying to belittle you, but most of your comments are without basis on the Morris issue.

Finally, Stephen directed an epic 90 yard drive with time running out. He was fearless, composed and a cold blooded killer on that season saving drive...as were his offensive team members.

Love the way FSU is bringing pressure on defense.
Winston is not the running threat I thought he was.
We can beat either team if we do not turn the ball over!

Marino, Manning, Farve...c'mon...grow up!

Of course Stephen will and should be held accountable. Stop being a tool!

Epic 91 yard drive by handing it off on almost every play so he wouldn't throw a pick.

ESPN's Rece Davis and Jesse Palmer talk UM football -- are the Canes really a Top-10 team?

Well, Rece and Jesse, it sure looks like they are, poor gatr wrong again.

LSU is losing late in 3rd. If they lose, and either FSU/CLEM lose (1 will) that's 5 top 10 teams GOING DOWN, PUTS U AT #5........

Means if fsu wins it will be two top 5 teams playing in 2 weeks. CANES -ugly win is ugly win

It was an epic drive. If never seen a qb go 11v 1...but if you have...hats off.

If Clemson wins, as of now, Lsu is losing, #5 fsu lose, # lsu lose #7 tex am lost #8 lvill lost #9 ucla lost........
if fsu wins just replace Clemson, pray LSU loses,

Finally, Stephen directed an epic 90 yard drive with time running out. He was fearless, composed and a cold blooded killer on that season saving drive...as were his offensive team members.

Biggest homer post of the week! Lol. Yeah Stephen showed them by handing the ball off 10 times in that last drive that started with 4 minutes and 11 seconds left and all 3 of our time outs left. Coley did the right thing by keeping all 3 of those pass plays fairly short. I think only 1 pass went more than 10 yards! So cold blooded and composed! You're belittling yourself with your liberal type excuse making.

Missouri will be getting all of the love tomorrow in the coaches poll. They laid it on arguably, the best defense in CFB with their back up QB at the helm. Definitely, expected that to be a low scoring game with Florida's horrible offense and their strong defense but I was wrong and didn't give Missouri enough credit going into that game. Very good chance that they jump us in the poll.

FSU that good or is Clemson just not so great?

Maybe a little bit of both... where's Dum.. I mean Dom to tell us how great we are and how we are going to beat FSU? After watching this 1st half, FSU looks a lot better than they were last year.

Dumbest post of the week! Seriously, did you even watch the game?

On the final drive Stephen completed a pass to Allen Hurns for a first down. Later he completed a pass to Herb Waters for another first down. And finally, Stephen completed yet another pass to Allen Hurns down to the Carolina 3 yard line that set-up Dallas Crawford's game winning touchdown run.

You are flat-out clueless and simply have no idea what you are talking about. Either you are painfully stupid or a pathological liar or both!

Posted by: sit on it and rotate | October 19, 2013 at 10:03 PM

UF's defense hasn't been the best since the week UM played them due to injury. If a Gator had said that I would say that that was the "Biggest Homer Post of the Week"!
I agree that Mizz will jump UM as will Baylor, but the way things are shaking out right now UM should at least move 1 or 2 spots tomorrow.

Go 'canes!

And one of the game wining passes was 17 yards...you lying dummy!

Apparently, you've been sitting on things and rotating for so long it has finally found your pea brain.

I TOLD Y'ALL ABOUT FSU!!!

I hate them only slightly less than ND.

BUT THEY ARE ON FIRE IN BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL.

If morris doesnt bring the best game of his life in 2 weeks, we will be humiliated by them.

Even when you present the lying trolls/haters on this blog with the facts they just keep on posting their ignorant lies...

You told us??? As if we couldn't deduct on our own that FSU is good/great? That's funny!! About 28 days ago I looked up at the sky and I said, "You see that crescent moon up there? In 28 days it's gonna be a full moon again!" I called it!!

P.S. If the WHOLE TEAM doesn't bring their best game than the WHOLE TEAM will lose.

Go 'canes!

Ole Miss driving on LSU and Clemson getting spanked. If LSU loses, we move to #5

Come on Ole Miss. actually, Clemson getting spanked at home helps them drop behind us in the polls........Either #6 if LSU wins or #5 if LSU Loses

Ain't happening Dom. We're gonna get jumped by Baylor and Mizz. 7 is the best we can do in my opinion.

Go 'canes!

OLE MISS UP 3............5 TOP 10 TEAMS LOSE once FSU game over..............and in COACHES POLL#10 SO CAROLINA LOST,,,,,,,,so we should be #5 in both polls.

FSU will jump Ohio st #3 and Oh St #4 Miami #5

Baylor has beat no one. We had a tuff road win in a nat tv conf game. They wont jump us

Sarasota, I would agree with U if we had played at home. But we lost Starting RB and WR, both #1s, and won on the road in a tuff environment on a weeknight... I don't see Baylor jumping up to #5. If they go in order,

FSU is really good. These guys are getting it done away at a good opponent. Not sure if they can bump Oregon but they deserve to be up there.

Dom, no way...we might stay at 10. We survived against an unranked opponent. FSU and VT games will give us a shot.

I just dont think we're a top 5 team. There's nothing wrong with it, we're building it up.

Rivalry or not I haven't seen anything from UM that would suggest that they are going to beat FSU. But stranger things have happened...

Go 'canes!

Posted by: Still afraid to use my ID | October 19, 2013 at 09:13 PM

You make my point. College QBs don't call games, coodinators/HCs do. Players look to the sideline and execute. The games this season are being called by a first-timer. The kid had a bad game, but i'll stand behind my ID and say when the time comes he'll carry us.

fsu is the #1 team in bcs......UM is gonna get destroyed...finally the golden/dnofrio fraud will be exposed.....coley sucks also and I am Miami high 75 alumni.....

these guys are just mediocre temple coaches...nothing more.....a senior UM team that is struggling against 1-4 teams.....

old cane team would be beating these teams by 3 TD's on average...melvin bratton was no better than duke johnson and brian blades was no better than dorsett.....its all about coaching and these idiots don't have it...

green peas will all see.....

Canes junkie 5 top 10 teams lost

I think Clemson might b a bit overrated too..... we could have put up 50 the other night on UNC< but bad SM17 plays, and we still got 27

Both teams will be in top 5 in two wees

1. Boston College was beating Clemson at Clemson In 4th qtr last week or 2 weeks ago, they won late. AT HOME vs BC so Clemson is overrated

2, Clemson#3, #6 LSu, #7 Texas am #8 Lville #9 UCLA all LOST and in coaches #10 So Carolina lost

WE HAVE TO MOVE UP

Gallo, even the 2001 canes had to have Ed Reed steal the ball for a TD @boston college or we lost that game , final game of 01 season.

2. Even when Jimmy Johnson coached, there were a lot of win and survive games vs unranked teams.

3. IT WAS A CONFERENCE GAME. ON THE ROAD, AND WE LOST 2 of our starting skill players.

4. 5 top 10 teams lost today

watching fsu just take Clemson apart......all from a freshman QB......where the f...ck is morris......what is his problem.....he is so BS. " they play dirty"...there is your answer.....

st Thomas Aquinas has more swagger.....makes me sick

Clemsons only real win was a 3pt win vs Georgia who lost 3rd game today already........last week almost lost at home to BC...........

IS FSU more loaded, yes, but we have the same skill as they do, they are just more deep

Is Winston due for a Freshman game, like Morris the other night??? yes... . maybe its vs the U

LOOKS LIKE WE R GONNA PLAY FSU 2 TIMES THIS YR IF WE BEAT VA TECH

CANE FANS, now, even if we lose to FSU, All we have to do is beat Va Tech, and (win out of course) and Miami vs FSU in ACC CHAMP

Gallo,

You've been right so many times before why would anybody question your latest idiotic predictions?

It is my sincere hope that it is one poster using numerous aliases to post the idiocy on this blog as the thought that there could be 3 or 4 people of such monumental stupidity who could all find their way to this one blog is just to depressing to contemplate.

"I think only 1 pass went more than 10 yards! So cold blooded and composed! You're belittling yourself with your liberal type excuse making."

The pass to Waters was 17yrds and into bracketed coverage. You belittle yourself by thinking.

Come again.
