“Great adjustments by Mark D’Onofrio. The defensive staff was great. When Mark got to halftime and drew them up, the guys came out with a vengeance. Mark made a shift up front. They took away [Tech’s rushing offense]. If you said we would have [four] turnovers and win the game, I’d say I have some sand to sell you. It says a lot about our team and the way we’re playing.”

After allowing 150 yards rushing in the first quarter, UM only relinquished 185 the rest of the day. And UM held Georgia Tech quarterbacks to 66 yards through the air, on dismal 6 for 19 accuracy.

Besides each of their picks, Gunter also made a terrific play on a third quarter run, forcing a five-yard loss, and Jenkins deflected a pass earlier in the half.

And there were a bunch of other key defensive plays in the second half: Anthony Chickillo snuffed out a run for no gain or a third and three, then added another tackle for loss on Tech’s next series… Shayon Green had a sack, the second of his career and second in two weeks…. And Tyriq McCord had a sack (and forced a fumble that Tech recovered) before Gunter’s late pick-six.

Defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio made great calls on two key Georgia Tech plays with UM leading 31-23 and just over five minutes left. On the first, he blitzed Denzel Perryman and Tracy Howard, forcing an incompletion on a third and seven from the UM 38. On the next, he went to a 3-4 defense after using a 4-3 most of the day, and Jenkins got the interception.

“We were looking for the right opportunity to get into our three-down package,” D’Onofrio said. “That was unbelievably executed by our guys. Jenkins got the pick and that was exactly what he was coached to do.”

D’Onofrio said Tech, early on “gave us something we haven’t seen in a couple years we played them, something they hadn't shown previously. So we had to scramble there a little bit. We were able to settle the guys down. I was able to draw up stuff on the board, get [them] lined up correctly. We were able to do a really good job in the third and fourth quarters.

D’Onofrio said “It was important we could [rotate] four inside guys. We didn’t want to get tired. Kelvin Cain was our second-team Mike linebacker because he played against this [before]. Nantambu Fentress [played]... It takes everyone executing their role. Fortunately, we have a lot of flexibility right now.”

This is how you run the offense!

I do think blitzing and harassing the young freshman winston is the way to go. The alternative, play zone and he will eat us up. Jimbo loves bubblescreens. You play aggressive D, get in his face and harass him!

Cool cat you know as much about football as i know about rocket science

This is how you run the offense!

So! You claim this is how the QB should run the offense???

In the 2011 game you reference Jacory was 8 for 23 with a total of 140 passing yards and one interception and no touchdowns...and no completions to the tight-end.

Yesterday, Stephen Morris was 17 for 22 with a total of 324 passing yards, three touchdown passes and two interceptions...and 3 completions to the tight-end.

Seriously Calvin, go peddle your bullsheet and lies to the mom's at the pee-wee games.

Calvin. It's not because they were playing too many cupcakes. I was at the game and I told everyone in the stand that GT is doing some stuff that they haven't done in their 1st four games which is something you can't prepare for. The reason we couldn't make the adjustments soon enough is because our defense wasn't on the sideline long enough in order to learn about what need to be adjusted. That time came after we scored our 1st td during the long drive during the 2nd quarter. Plus, another thing to factor in is that Coach D is up in the booth which means he has to wait until halftime in order for him to show our d on the board what's going on. If everyone watch more than 2 of GT games, you would have known from the jump that they brought something new to the table. The great thing is...we eventually somewhat adjusted during the middle of the second and completely adjusted during the half. It had nothing to do with playing so many cupcakes.

Thank you Norman for a post that helps educate the clueless one, Calvin!

I like when they point out(self praise) after a guy makes a play how "he did exactly what he was coached to do"

I agree. Ryan Williams makes better decisions. Plus, he utilizes our tight ends more. He puts the ball where our receivers can run after the catch on a consistent basis. As far as FSU goes, some of y'all need to relax. They have faced any team with a good d line or secondary as of yet. Clemson has a good d line, but their secondary isn't really good so that game is going to be interesting because FSU's secondary is suspect as well along with their d line.

You are welcome Ron Zook. Calvin. Coaches should get some of the credit if the players are doing what was taught the coaches. Do you know that Tracy Howard stated that he had to adjust to what was being taught by our coaches and when he started doing it, it benefited him in a big way. Do you give Shannon credit for the way our d played when he was the d coordinator? Yes.

I've read a lot of stuff about Shannon this and Shannon that for a while without responding, but I'm not going to get into everything at this moment, but one thing I want to say is even though I was happy he was hired because his skin color is the same as mind, I sort of regret that he was hired because the only thing we hear is that The U never gave him a fair shake because of his skin color. If anyone knows that history of Shalala, no one will be making that statement. For anyone to say that he was brought here to graduate our football players sounds ridiculous because what does that has to do with what he was supposed to do on the field during practices and games. His responsibility was to develop our players physically, conditionally and mentally which is where he completely failed at in a big way. Let's just say I talked to players from Miami Northwestern who played for him and players from other other schools and players whom decided to go elsewhere. Lastly, Shannon's biggest issue was hiring mostly high school coaches as assistants because they were not qualified for developing college players. That's why all of them are right back coaching high school ball. Now, I do believe Shannon was going to fire those guys right after his last season, but it was too late so stop saying that he wasn't given a fair chance especially after Shalala wrongfully gave him an extension.

My God Calvin may be the dumbest human being on earth.

Canes fan: Why do we give up cheap TD's at the end of a game Great point. I remember W. Sapp & 1st. team D on the side line after being taken out after canes had a big lead, Screaming at 2nd. & 3rd. team D not to give up a point, No way, No how, No where. It's A canes thing. you need to understand! 60 min. football, A mind set by J.J. Raising Canes.....

Sal. We are not quite there yet. Back then, our 2nd and 3rd had quite a few veterans as well. Next year is when we are going to have a good amount of veterans on our 3rd team. Also, I can bring up quite a few games back in the day where our 3rd team was scored on. Also, if you have a lot of freshmen on your 2nd and 3rd team, they are going to get scored on. You see what happened last year when we had so much youth whom are basically older and no the playbook this year.

Norm: Lack of effort finishing , it was plain to see the D GAVE UP ON GT last drive. Back in the day 2nd & 3rd. team might have been scored on, but not from lack of effort.

WHEN THE SEASON STARTED I PROMISED NOT TO USE "ALL CAPS' EXCEPT IF I'M PISSED. WELL I AM AT SOME OF YOU SO CALLED CANE FANS FOR ALL OF THIS NEGATIVITY THIS AND NEGATIVITY THAT. WE ARE 5-0 AND COULD BE UNDEFEATED HEADING INTO TALLAHASSEE. IS THERE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT ? SURE BUT GOING INTO THE SEASON WE WERE ALL CONCERN ABOUT A DEFENSE THAT WAS TERRIBLE LAST YEAR. WELL THAT WAS LAST YEAR THIS SEASON COACH D AND COACH FRANKLIN(2 STOOGIES) HAVE DONE AN OUTSTANDING JOB WITH THERE UNITS AND THE OVERALL DEFENSE AND I DO NOT MIND "EATING CROW" BECAUSE THE TEAM IS WINNING. THE TIME HAS COME TO SUPPORT THIS TEAM AND PROGRAM AND TO "SHUT THE F UP" IF WE CANNOT SAY SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT THIS TEAM. HAS ANYONE NOTICED WE HAVE NOT LOST SINCE THE VIRGINIA GAME LAST YEAR BY 1 PT ?? PROBABLY NOT!! GO CANES!! 5-0 WIN THE NEXT 2 AND FSU IS IN TROUBLE !!
