Duke beats Carolina, heads to ACC Title game; UM shifts focus to final exams, bowl practices, recruiting

Al Golden said he wasn't going to lose his mind Saturday scoreboard watching or "become a slave to the TV for seven hours" to see if the University of Miami would get the help it needed to reach next weekend's ACC championship game.

Duke made sure the agonizing only lasted three and a half hours for everyone else who bleeds orange and green.

The Blue Devils, who beat Miami for the first time since 1976 two weeks ago in Durham, punched their ticket to Charlotte and a date with second-ranked Florida State Saturday afternoon thanks to a late 27-yard field goal in a 27-25 win at North Carolina.

Had Duke lost and Virginia upset rival Virginia Tech, UM would have began preparing for a rematch with the Seminoles Monday. Instead, the focus for the Hurricanes (9-3) now shifts to final exams, a few days off and the team's first trip to a bowl game since Golden was hired in December 2010.

> Golden said "it's tough to quantify" what missing 30 to 35 December practices under self-imposed bowl bans did to hurt the program over the last two years and he's definitely looking forward to having them this year.

"Having all the [recruits] in South Florida come watch bowl practice and watch us operate and be around our team and players," will be big for the program moving forward, Golden said. Getting to 10 victories with a bowl win -- at likely either the Chick-Fil-A in Atlanta (Dec. 31) or the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando (Dec. 28) -- is also important, Golden said.

> What did Golden like and not like about Friday's effort in chilly Pittsburgh?

"The kids competed; they had a great attitude," Golden said. "It meant something to them which is so important. I think we’ve all seen instances where it’s like, all right, nobody cares. We’re not in this bowl game or that bowl game. Or we’re letting external influences impact our judgment or our attitude or how we play. That didn’t happen [Friday], which was awesome. They wanted to finish on a positive note."

Golden cited Miami's continuing woes on third down (UM was 4 of 11 on offense; 6 of 14 on defense), special teams breakdowns on kick return and kickoff coverage, and a few instances of poor tackling as negatives in the Pitt win. He did, though, credit linebacker Denzel Perryman, safeties Rayshawn Jenkins and Deon Bush and cornerback Antonio Crawford as having better tackling performances Friday.

"There are so many things we have to fix and continue to fix," Golden said. "One of our goals in the postseason is clearly to push a lot of young players along that have not had the benefit of this time of year -- to be pushed at this time of year."

> Golden said UM came out healthy from the Pitt game and he expects cornerback Ladarius Gunter and defensive end Dwayne Hoilett, who missed Friday's game, to return for bowl practices. Linebacker Alex Figueroa, who has missed UM's last three games, could return but must be cleared by a doctor.

"If we were playing next Saturday Fig would not be ready," Golden said. "There’s a good chance for the bowl game. That would be awesome for him and great for him to have that opportunity."

> Golden said freshman running back Gus Edwards is "practicing better and starting to become more comfortable" in Miami's system. Edwards ran 11 times for 64 yards and a touchdown Friday.

"We can’t live in the past but there’s a young man that missed however many practices in training camp, a good bunch of them," Golden said. "Gus is a young man that is really going to continue to improve. He should be fresh. His play count is  not as high as Brandon Linder or Clive Walford or some of those guys. He should bring some energy to us and we expect him to continue to improve.

"He’s got deceptive speed but I thought he did a great job with his vision and his lateral cuts [Friday]. He really made the right cuts. He stayed with his cuts, he didn’t freelance at all. And when he got to the second level he made some guys miss. We’ve got to continue to get his pads down and get that stiff arm going but we’re hopeful that Gus will continue to improve."

Should we blame Temple losses on Al. Golden since we are blaming Randy Shannon and the NCAA for Golden Short coming. The NCAA and Randy has nothing to do with what we saw on the field. Recruits that want to go to the U. Will attend the U regardless of NCAA or not.Randy and Recruits knew he was going to be fired. That's why there wasn't as many recruits signed before he was let go. No worries Louisville thanks the administration for their help in raising their football program to new heights.

C'ville... Any Hurricane fan knows that attendance has always been poor, even in the NC years. We sold out two games a year (FSU and maybe V tech). So using that as a benchmark is silly.

$$$$$$$$

For once in my life, I finally agree with that DORK, dajedknight. Huh

And I believe several former Hurricane football players made mention of the FACT, that Cane football has approximately " 30,000 " stauch fan-dom.

Again, that included all those Top 5/Top 10 seasons when Miami had it's GROOVE STROKE going and what not. dUh

Voila... finally a loyal Cane fand bloody SPEAKS THE TRUTH!!

Total Team Defense

No. 76 Miami, Florida

Hey, that's an improvement from No. 117 last season.

Oh, I touted the Cane defense would finish in the NO. 55-NO. 64 percentile range.

So much for my sagacious touts and what not.

Meanwhile, defending ACC champs win a huge game after being down double digits in the first half out in Anaheim.

Coaching, basketball team has it, football team keeps getting thrown under the bus by it because they don't.

D, you figured wrong when you estimated that the coaching staff stealing their paychecks from UM would learn from their mistakes.

It's understandable to want to believe they couldn't be so block headed as to think what they did last year would work this year due to excuses they sold the fan base and then believed themselves.

Understandable, but still a mistake as they believe their own PR, which makes them the only ones.

I really hope we play either manziel or bridgewater in a bowl bc I want to see if we can break the defensive yards allowed and maybe just maybe that might be enough for changes to be made. The worse possible scenario is what happened the last few games which was winning against garbage teams while still allowing them to have season high offensive games against us.

Yeah, Miami's mens basketball coach was a WINNER and had proved something in the N.C.A.A. Tournament prior to arriving in Coral Gables. HUh

I think the Canes head coach took some OBSCURE team to the Final Four and what not.

Whereas both Goldie and Mark Mark DIDN'T even play in a M.A.C. championship game. Let alone win a title in the M.A.C. Go figures'.

I could see johnny football passing for 400 and running for 100 against dno and Texas am putting up 600 plus yards

Teddy would solidify bring first overall in the draft if he played us

3 years later and still "Randy Shannon". He got fired , and deserved it. Let him go, just like Coker, let it go. Right now we have Golden to deal with. It's Golden's team, and his JOB to improve these players no matter what. Even if they aren't the best, teach them.
D, in the OB we had about 50-55,000 depending on the opponent in the 80's. Not 30,000. Rarely below 50,000. Sellouts only in big games.
This is what UM football is, and will draw. The difference was 40,000 in the OB would be louder than 150,000 in No-Life.
Zook, your everyday excuses for Golden are sweet, but facts show you are wrong. Without making poor reasons for the shape of the team, prove Golden can coach.

For continuity-sake, Coker took over a championship-ready squad and rolled to a 24-0 start, making a swell guy and perennial assistant an instant fan-favorite.

Five years later, a struggling Coker was the one feeling the heat and the banner-flyers of yesteryear wanted him gone, ready to welcome Benedict Davis back with open arms.

Instead, North Carolina snatched up the former Miami leader in November 2006.

Ten days later, Coker was fired after a 6-6 regular season, Shannon took over and four more years of misery ensued, leaving this program in shambles when Golden took over in December 2010. And this was before the NCAA hammered the football program for almost 3 years where NCAA President Mark Emmert loudly announced the investigation with the declaration...THE DEATH PENALTY IS NOT OFF THE TABLE, which our competitors repeated again and again and again to every recruit Coach Golden's staff coveted.

And this proves what? Nothing. Until A Golden coached team BEATS, or even competes, considering UM has been BLOWN out against every good team Golden has faced, then he is just another coach. Proof of great, or "BEST COACHES' are in wins. Which gives Golden no proof. Yet?

Hey "D"ick... wash, rinse and repeat!

Perspective is key, if it really is about this “U Family” and its “Canes thing” then let’s turn our focus towards the overall positive effort and results by our current coaches and players.

This coaching staff and this senior class have been to hell and back the past few years through no fault of their own. Day in and day out, all have bled for this beloved program. This entire bunch deserves huge recognition today.

Outsiders and haters will never know or admit the real and disastrous consequences that the tainted 3 year NCAA investigation did to this program, as there’s no doubt that it was an anvil around this coaching staff’s neck and has since been removed. This alone will make a massively positive impact next year and the many years to follow.

Despite all the headwinds this coaching staff and players faced they ended the season beating a good Pittsburgh team at their place…in cold weather, which qualified the Canes for a desirable bowl game that will also help next year’s team due to the extra month of practice and also help recruiting.

Two of the great swagger moments in Canes history were watching two dozen or so Canes running on the field for pre-game warm-ups shirtless as the Pittsburgh players, coaches and fans looked on with their jaws on their chests and the best coach in college football, Al Golden, wearing only a long sleeve white shirt and tie for 3 hours in 30 degree weather sending the message we are a group of very tough Hombres and this day is not going to end well for you Pittsburg Panthers. That swagger was REAL (unlike what we painfully witnessed during the Shannon years) and was broadcast across the nation making it clear that the Miami Hurricanes…ARE BACK!!!

Richmond.

You are a fool, as Coach Golden beat a top 10 Florida Gator team BEFORE all of their too many to count injuries left the team a shadow of what the Canes faced last September 7th.

When you lie about something so easily disproved it makes anything else you blather on about a waste of time.

The morons on this site and the Canes' coaching are unbelievable. DEFENSE WINS GAMES!!!

d'o and goldie have proven themselves INCOMPETENT on defense. Yes, the Canes will win against Sav. St and maybe a close game here and there. But Miami will NEVER win against good teams like FSU, ALA, AUB, OSU, Ore, etc with the garbage coaching of goldie and d'o.

Get ready for another year of mediocre wins and excuses for losses with goldie and d'o starting with the toilet bowl.

Florida was overrated from the beginning. Like we were #7, doesn't mean we deserved it. Any one who watched the turds last season KNEW they were not that good. And the excuses of injuries is just that, another excuse. The turds couldn't score last year either, just good basic defense. Another factless claim of your hero worship to a man who has to this point done nothing. Someone posted here the best he has beaten is an 8-5 team after a season. It was GT I believe, a one dimensional team. No wonder UFelons fired zook.

And what is Florida's record now, and what bowl did they get. My lie was truth.

Do fans really think a 6-6 pit team is a good team? Is that how far our expectations have fallen to the point where beating a 6-6 pit team is considered a good win. Are fans seriously going to say that going from 117 to 75 is improvement we should be proud of?

In the last three years is there even one game where ppl unanimously felt that we out coached a team?

I get fans support golden bc he has done some good here but my god how can anyone support dno? What has dno done in three years besides field statistically the worst miami defenses since 1980 in back to back years

I want to thank R Zook for his recruiting. He was truly a very good recruiter, selling young men on how he could develop them and give them a shot at the NFL with hard work. Like Al Golden, Zook promises to field a team to be proud of, tough, smart, and well conditioned.
Unfortunately, Zook, like Golden, can't fulfill the promises. Only the fact that as freshman and soph's they will see playing time. Since the classes before them are not "good players". Talent is rare in the juniors and seniors.
The fans make excuses for a few years, talent, the coach before them, outside distractions, and of course the weight room. Small crowds and unhappy at losing fans bring the team down. But they will fix it.
Unfortunately for Zook, he got fired and I made his players winners. I did what he could not. WIN
Will Golden be a Zook. Or will he fulfill his promises? Time will tell, but one thing we know,, DON'T BELIEVE ZOOK

People on here say RS Signature win was against a ranked OU team and Uncle Al beat an over-rated UF team. What was OU ranked at the end of the 2009 season? The same as UF.... Neither of them were ranked! If UF was a hot garbage team that doesn't count as a signature win, by the same logic, RS doesn't have a signature win either. Hmmmmmm... Not defending Golden boy, but all you RS lovers need to pick one side of your mouth and talk out of that one. Otherwise you're just talking out of your stinkhole.

lol @ CaneFan72.. you might want to check, there are quite a few NFL teams that run the 3-4 defense.
Chiefs, 49'rs, Colts, Ravens, Saints, and more. Rob Ryan runs 3 down lineman most of the time. I don't think it's the scheme jeevs.. could be the coaching tho.
///////////////////////
IT IS THE COACHING. ANNNNNNDDDDD, in three down sets, THE LBs ON THOSE TEAMS PLAY RIGHT ON TOP OF THE los and man to man. Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

If the coach tells you how to tackle somebody a billion times, something you've been taught since you started playing football, and you continue to do it wrong.. is that the coaches fault?
//////////////////////////////////////////
ONE, it is impossible to MISS tackling someone if you focus on his numbers or his belly because his arms and legs are not going anywhere without his belly. Duhhhhhh.s#storylink=cpy

Well just think Ganes fans, if the Hurricanes had better coaching, they'd be the ones not getting blown out by Duke and on homecoming and having a chance to upset the #1 ranked in state rivals to avenge the blowout they suffered at their hand in a neutral site game and a possible national championship game berth.

Instead, Alverage installs the same loser defensive game plan the rest of the season and finishes November with a losing record 2-3.

That's why he'll never be anything except Alverage. It's a Ganes thing, you wouldn't understand.

Finally, when will the race card pulling stop. Randy was HIRED because he was black, NOT FIRED because of it.
I guarantee if Al Golden does not get UM in the ACC Championship game, his seat will be red hot, as it should be.

Posted by: IMAWriter | December 01, 2013 at 01:17 AM

Who do U write for The Klan Times?

U just accused UM of playing the *imaginary* race card when they hired Shannon.

Who has EVER even insinuated, let alone posted that Shannon was fired because he's black? I've never read any such suggestion on a post. RS was not a good HC and thats why he was fired...whats wrong with U

IMARacist?

DKnight nails it.

Not that facts count for anything but Shannon's squad beat the acc conf champ in 08 and 09!

Vetch in 08

Gtech in 09

That ou team was still a td fav to win the game.

What in the world are you talking about? Before all of the injuries Florida's defense was a monster. Easely was considered by many to be the country's best interior linemen and single handedly destroyed opposing offenses.

Look, I know you haters have to mislead and lie when failingly trying to belittle Big Al Golden, but I've gotta tell you--you're not even an accomplished liar like some of your hater brethren. But, keep trying as with a few more years of you throwing up your hate on this blog and others you may just get there.

Randy Shannon's best moment as a head coach was taking a freshman laiden team to play UF in Gainesville. We fought hard that night, but lost to a better team. After that it was straight garbage and all players regressed.

AL GOLDEN IS THE BEST COACH IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!

AL GOLDEN HAS BROUGHT BACK SWAGGER TO THE "U"!!

AL GOLDEN WILL SOON DELIVER THE CANES 6TH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!

I loved Randy Shannon then and I love Randy Shannon now. He is a leader with a code and makes the kids he comes into contact with better human beings.

Unfortunately, Randy was and at this point in his career not qualified to be a head coach. His years at the "U" as the head man were regrettable, but he never quit fighting.

Hopefully, with a few more years as an assistant coach a lower tier program will hire Randy as their head man that will allow him to capture the experience he needs to successfully coach a Division 1 team, which will hopefully be the Canes after Al Golden wins National Championships 6, 7, 8 and 9!

Nashville... You do realize that the ACC was a raging dumpster fire in '08 and '09..... Right?

(Left side or Right side?)

Your not credible enough to bother with, Zook. You have no facts to back up anything. The facts are on the field, and what we saw on the field is an outplayed, outcoached Miami team. Facts are facts.
Fact enough, VT couldn't move the ball on anyone all season, until homecoming, and that QB looked like a first round draft pick. Bad job by Golden PERIOD

Wow! What a bunch of straight garbage and STUPIDITY from some of you!

1) Shannon was not a good head coach, so he got fired. DESERVEDLY SO. But all the racist garbage that many of you so called "Cane fans" spouted during his tenure made me cringe in shame. I'm a white guy, but the CANES have always been a team with a black vibe and personality to it. Where do you think that swagger came from and why do you think the rest of the country hated us so much? To hear some of you yahoos say the CANES will never win with a black coach or a Black QB made me sick to my stomach. Go follow Alabama with that attitude; you can be sure there will never be a black coach over at Bear Bryant's school. I NEVER expected to hear all that racial GARBAGE from my fellow CANES fans. Seriously, I was shocked and very disappointed. This is Miami, not Tuscaloosa.

2) Al Golden is a good recruiter and a fine team spokesman. But as an IN GAME COACH he is not very good at all. He constantly is out-coached. This is THE U! 9-3 with losses to Duke and VT does not cut it around here. We EXPECT to win CHAMPIONSHIPS, and unless Golden gets us on track to doing so REAL SOON, he's got to go. He deserves no more slack than any other losing coach here in Miami.

3) Golden needs to say good bye to his pal Donoffrio immediately. The Defense has gotten WORSE since he got here. He is not a good defensive coordinator; that much is as plain as can be. If Golden insists on being loyal to his friend instead of getting the best possible Defensive coach that he can find, then he needs to go. This is Miami. We play for CHAMPIONSHIPS here. Just having winning seasons and going to second rate bowl games does nothing for us. That's why Shannon had to go. Golden should get no more of a pass because he looks so good and talks so nicely. The bottom line here is WINS.

And what do you call an acc where duke is in the title game?

Here's a thought Richmond...just once in every 100 posts you offer sneak in one sentence that has a shred of truth, just to break-up the monotony, then resume your lying.

@canfan72
IT IS THE COACHING. ANNNNNNDDDDD, in three down sets, THE LBs ON THOSE TEAMS PLAY RIGHT ON TOP OF THE los and man to man. Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Point is, it's not the scheme so quit crying about the scheme. Those teams have good LB's and DB's that are fast enough to do man to man. When you don't have a DL, your lb's are mediocre and your db's are slow.. no scheme you put them in will work.. duuuuuuhhhhhhh Name some Defensive guys that would start at FSU? With the right scheme and coaches does Savannah State beat Miami? um.. no

ONE, it is impossible to MISS tackling someone if you focus on his numbers or his belly because his arms and legs are not going anywhere without his belly. Duhhhhhh.s#storylink=cpy
If it's so impossible then why does it keep happening? All you do is cry about the coaching, the coaches aren't the ones missing the tackles duuuuhhhhhhhh. Is it a simple thing and impossible to miss, or is it poor coaching? Make up your mind.

Moving...

No defensive guys start on FSU, but how many of our guys would start at Duke? Coaching matters when you have an equal or narrow talent gap.

Alex,

Golden gets a little more slack because of the ncaa situation. He is eatimg up a lot ofggood will by holding on to dino.

Exactly Alex and Nash

@Canesjunkie
I hear you, and that would be an interesting comparison. Certainly not all of them right? To me it all starts at the DL. Chick might start over there, anyone else you can think of? DZP would start and our corners maybe but not the safeties rogers or highsmith. So maybe half of them?
Once again, I'm not sold on Duh O no but when most of your starters are second stringers at Duke.. what you gonna do? I want to hate on him to but look what he's working with.

Al Golden will be the head football coach of the Miami Hurricanes for as long as he chooses to do so.

Unfortunately, due to the Miami fan base he will probably accept a position with a major program elsewhere. And when he does--I want to hear the self proclaimed football geniuses on this blog put their list together of potential replacement coaches, because I want to enjoy every moment of that stupidity as I laugh my arse off.

When Larry Coker was given his walking papers it was hilarious reading the replacement names the haters were bantering about. Every single name thrown out quickly responded with...not a chance in hell am I going to accept a position in that hornets nest.

Randy Shannon wasn't selected as the Canes head coach--he was the only SOB stupid enough to take the position.

Miami mirrors UCLA basketball during the John Wooden era. Their fans became so spoiled that their impossible expectations have been a major reason a coach was never allowed the time to build a 'new' foundation, thus the program has floundered for years as the coaching carousel continues to this day.

UCLA's "win championships now" yearly mantra has insured the "lose now and in the future" results, much like the Canes.

Alex,

Golden gets a little more slack because of the ncaa situation. He is eatimg up a lot ofggood will by holding on to dino.

Agreed 100% canesjunkie. But for me, now that the NCAA garbage is over, it's time to produce. I'm not one of those calling for Golden to be fired; far from it. He IS a good recruiter and a good "face of the program". But that only goes so far around here. The biggest problem is the Defense; hell, Stevie Wonder can see that! Donoffrio is lousy at coming up with a good game plan and is terrible at making in-game adjustments. Once the opposing team finds something that works in game, we can forget about it! They will keep on doing it for the rest of the game because our Defense makes no attempt to stop it, not even at halftime. I have been a CANES fan for about 50 years and I honestly have never seen anything like this. Hell, Duke ran for 350 yards on us. What more does Golden need to see? If there is not MAJOR IMPROVEMENT next year, my patience with this will be completely gone.

@Alex
Good write up. But keep in mind since 95 VT is 13-5 against Miami...and in that time has 4 ACC championships and a Big East championship. Loosing to Duke is another thing tho

Idiots We have had Shapiro mess hanging over us for 3 years--get your whacks in now, 9-3 or better many of us said and the mess over would be a good season . the 1999 canes went 9-4 and then all that young talent came together with a young 19 yr old qb Dorsey in 2000, beating #1 FSU .

When you bring in this top 4 class, we are going to be loaded with talent all over the field.

How is the Basketball team doing ?

1st of all its not Coach D for the D. the problem. WE HAVE TALENT EVERY WHERE BUt D LINE AND LB's, and where are glaring issues? Run D and giving up yards.

We dont have the 4 and 5 star DT's, (we have 2-3 coming in this class), and now with Mccord and Muhammed at DE, Depth, top 4-5 star DT's coming in, and some LB's redshirted and coming in. BIG DIFFERNCE>

Move chick to DT next year, and get muhammed and mccord at DE 4 down players. with the new DT's and more LB speed. you will see a big difference.

1/2 of our team is playing in UF/FSU/Louisville,ala.arkansas due to Shapiro sanctions. You take Amari Cooper, the RB that went to Arkansas, Matthew THomas LB that chose FSU ,add them up. Alot of them didnt come because of shapiro
