Is a youth movement about to get going on Canes defense? Looks like it on new depth chart

The University of Miami released a new depth chart late Sunday night after the team's third consecutive loss and as expected receiver Phillip Dorsett was back on it, an encouraging sign considering the Hurricanes could use all the help they can get.

Perhaps the most encouraging sign of all was that for the first time all season explosive sophomore Tyriq McCord was on it, listed as the co-starter with Thurston Armbrister at strong side line backer.

Also around and easy to spot on the two-deep: freshman defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad (backup to Shayon Green, hadn't seen him listed in weeks), freshman safety Jamal Carter (backup to Rayshawn Jenkins and Kacy Rodgers) and freshman cornerback Corn Elder (second team behind either junior Ladarius Gunter or freshman Artie Burns). Also, sophomore Deon Bush is now the clear-cut starter over senior AJ Highsmith at safety and sophomore Earl Moore is now listed as a backup to Curtis Porter at defensive tackle.

Which raises this question: is Al Golden ready to dump the old guys for the new guys? Sure has that aroma.

Obviously the depth chart is a mere piece of paper. Golden can ultimately do whatever he chooses and play whomever he chooses. But I'm taking this as a sign that now that the Canes really have no shot at the Coastal Division title and because the defense has been horrendous he's going to let some of the young guys get some real burn. Honestly it's one of the smartest things he can do at this point.

Does the author of this article understand what a youth movement is? Which young players on this depth chart are in position to start and get considerable reps? A youth movement speaks to an abundance of youth being put on the field. There are no major changes to this depth chart. Tyrone Cornelius and Highsmith not starting are the only substantial changes.

Hell, write a feature on a few players that are playing well or just write about the real concerns, What needs to be fixed to get the defense right, placing a few young players second and third on the depth chart isn't the answer.

Dorsett might be right in what he tweeted, but he's not out on the field and we're not part of the team. So why tweet it in the first place. If you don't like it, vet in someones fave about it...

someone, anyone needs to step up...and really care about the final score...an attitude adjustment has to happen in order for any of these reults to change...that locker room CANNOT BE OKAY with losing to DUKE!! I know they are improved and beat us up and down the field....hats off!...but, seriously...the play-calling? concerns me...we are running for 5-6 yrds a pop...and they get cute and start throwing downfield, etc...when it was 27-28..3rd qtr...we were RUNNING ALL OVER THEM....and then STOPPED...the DEF was gassed...and completely useless...only chance was to keep the ball away from them....it is broke in Coral Gables...someone needs to take ownership and step up. GOD Bless ya'

MARK, accountability starts and is cultivated at the top. U can't expect the kids to step up when their head coach refuses to.

why is chickillo still a starter???.every game he is completely irrelevant, gets blown off the line 99% of the time..how often do you here his name called for making a tackle???..playing totally on name alone...

Posted by: dudecane1 | November 18, 2013 at 06:14 AM
!!!!!!!!!!!!

Voila! DE Chickillo is one of the main culprit's on Miami's sub-par defensive line.

Matter of fact, either Gilbert or McCord should have been given more SNAP's in lieu of Chickillo.

Yeah, yeah I understand he's a Cane bUbba, fan favorite and what not.

Nonetheless, it's not ALL Chick's fault, because he's CARRYING too much additional weight ( FWIW... CALVIN mentioned the added weight would HURT Chickillo!! ) and the defensive line SCHEME'S have absolutely, hindered his play.

Chit, Chickillo has steadily REGRESSED since his freshmen season and that's BECAUSE of D'Onofrio's schemes and ploy's.

The bottom line is Chickillo is QUICKLY headed towards ANOTHER 5/4-Star BUST for the Canes!! No if's but's or may be's.

Man there are either a bunch of trolls here or a bunchof losers. If U cant pull for a possible 9-3 regular season then why even comment. Especially if U haven't commented before. I will be watching the final games. Hswalden is an idiot. We are already bowl eligible. Even if we drop the last two we play in a bowl and that will be an improvement . Win a bowl, fire donofrio, and start recruiting.

First of all bUbba, it's an extreme LONG SHOT the Canes finish the regular season 9-3 as you mentioned above.

Two. In case you haven't noticed. Your beloved Goldie and D'Onofrio were LITERALLY OUT COACHED by an ANNUAL bottom-feeder A.C.C. football program.

Can you personally IMAGINE what a BOTTOM-FEEDER s.e.c or PAC-12 team would have done to Goldie nd' Marky Mark's team Saturday past!!! LOL

Three. The vast majority of Coach Cutlieff's roster and starter's happen to be of the TWO-THREE star variety!

Four. So much for those South Florida 5/4/3-Star prep player's TRUMPING a mighty DORK squad.

Five. Miami, Florida will have EXTREME difficulty defeating Pittsburgh on their SENIOR DAY. Oh, the Panther's have relatively better talent than MIGHTY Duke.

Five. And the Orange nd' Green COUP DE GRACE. It's highly possible that both Golden nd' D'Onofrio have LOST THE TEAM!!!

Even a host of college football pundit's mentioned that the Cane's just want to finish the season and the Hurricane's don't really care if they win or lose. They just want to finish the season!

In other words, team MORALE has fallen into the grey, cold, cold, murky ABYSS!!!

And both your BELOVED Golden and D'Onofrio DON'T KNOW HOW to remedy the sorry state Miami football is in.

yeah Cal, but whats crazy to me is how you and I always attacked the Canes on this blog as soon as our Gators went down the tubes. And the Canes fans here don't realize what we did here and what we do on other Canes blogs using different aliases to slam the Canes and praise our Gators??? Its totally hilarious. I guess we were supposed to tell them what frauds we are huh.

Posted by: sidcane | November 18, 2013 at 08:24 AM
@@@@@@@@@@@

By the way, good ol' boy. Any college football fan-dom, with a relatively objective viewpoint, could see the Hurricane train headed for a DEADLY DERAILMENT.

ENTER the NARROW escapes against Carolina Blue and a HOME game against MIGHTY Wake Forest.

Now get back to you kin at that CS/eoth!

So that's only 180 total yards of offense against our starters and only 6 points...

We had 5 sacks last night versus 13 sacks all last year.

The Canes might be ranked in the top 10 of all defense's across the country after week one...Go Canes and Go Coach D'Onofrio!!!

Posted by: Ron Zook | August 31, 2013 at 01:41 AM

MARK, accountability starts and is cultivated at the top. U can't expect the coaches to put great teams on the field knowing what the NCAA and Shannon did to the program. No talent, no matter the coaches you are going to find it very hard to win.

exactly calvin.......he didnt even talk to dorsett or duke.....its unbelievable

he is so done....

We were ranked 7th. A true fraud of a program. One of the weakest schedules in all of College football. Most definitely the weakest UM Football schedule I can remember the last 30+ years. So this is why Shannon, a UM alumnus was run out of town? Really??
Everyone is watching Golden go kiss up to Jimbo and Beamer after they thoroughly whip his butt!!! Then he comes out talking about "what a great relationship" he has with various coaches. Someone tell Golden---"Fans don't care about that crap!!" Stop kissing other coaches feet and solve our issues or take your butt back up north.

Secondly, Miami' defense has vastly improved over last year. Thanks to Coach Golden's wildly successful and badly needed U-Tough program it was clearly evident that our kids have become much bigger, stronger and faster. Last night our starting defense gave up 170 yards and 6 points. They were positioned properly and should have had 3 interceptions--one for a pick-six. Also, the various 'new' blitz packages installed by Coach D'Onofrio were impressive and sent the message he has trust in this more mature team.

Once the offense straightens away their issues this team is going to be very formidable.

By the way...FAU was surprisingly physical and certainly well coached.

Posted by: Ron Zook | August 31, 2013 at 12:34 PM

LMAO-
credibility?

Calvy told us how terrible Miami's defense is and is always reminding us of last year's 116th ranking, but last night FAU only had 170 total yards and 6 points against our Canes starters. This will probably have the Canes ranked in the top 20 of all defenses in the country and possibly as high as the top 10. If that happens standby for Calvy and his many aliases to tell us why that doesn't matter.

Posted by: Ron Zook | August 31, 2013 at 07:47 PM

I can't make this stuff up!!

Speaking of non-conference schedules. Golden and the current A.D. " INTENTIONALLY " have/will schedule weak pre-season teams.

Yeah, yeah there's always that ONE strong non-conference Fee, Fi, Foe opponent.

2014

I-AA Bethune-Cookman...HOME

ARKANSAS ST....HOME

@ Go BIGot REDneck aka Herbie Cornhusker's

A yet to be determined opponent.

And I can guarantee that opponent WON'T be a BOTTOM-FEEDER from a B.C.S. conference. Especially after what ANNUAL college football power Duke did to Miami on Saturday.

Again, Miami, Florida will absolutely win with both Golden and D'Onofrio at the helm of the U.S.S. Cane.

Too bad those Hurricane-ESQUE 11-1 or undefeated winning seasons WON'T happen under the helm of Al nd' Mark. Get outta here with that crap, Outsider!

The terrible nightmare reality of Cane football matter's, is even with THE DUKE playing Saturday. Miami still would've lost to Coach Cutlieff's squad. ENTER D'Onofrio's suspect defensive schemes and ploys.

Very simple college team sport analogy.

Both Golden and D'Onofrio have taken basketball player's whom have played MAN-TO-MAN defense, 90% of the time.

And have taken these MAN-TO-MAN defensive player's and have forced them to play ZONE DEFENSE, 85% of the time on the hard court.

Even more simple explanation. ..we've surrendered 40+ each of the past 3 weeks. The last 40+ beat down was against Duke. Something is wrong.

Lots of comments about flawed defensive schemes. I was at the game and there were two obvious advantages. Miami's offensive line and surprisingly Duke's offensive line. Over and over Duke's offensive line would establish the line of scrimmage to their advantage. I don't believe scheme is to blame. I agree with some other posts that basically say UM is just average on the defensive line. Beyond Perryman, I'm not sure they have many high-draft NFL guys in the front 7. The only fix is recruiting, so hopefully help is on the way. My only comment on play calling is I wish they would have run the ball more in the red zone. Bad loss for sure!

Anyone notice that on the first drive by Duke the defense played press man coverage and forced a three and out? After Miami got a 10-0 lead the team reverted to prevent and allowed Duke to march down the field for a score. They continued to play prevent for most of the game. The coaching staff was trying just trying to maintain a lead instead of going for the kill. The game had all the makings of a blowout at the beginning, but then Miami decided to play soft and allowed Duke back into it. I swear it's almost as if the coaching staff is trying to lose some of these games. I feel like once they found out Va. Tech lost, they decided they wanted no part of a rematch with FSU and threw in the towel. They will beat UVA on Saturday and lose Pitt. They will finish with 8 wins and Golden will say "we are making progress." This team is no better than last season and they lost nobody of significance other than Mike James and the players Golden decided to cut loose from the program.

The loss to Duke is one of the most embarrassing losses in the history of the program. It's up there with 48-0 to UVA in the last game of the Orange Bowl, Syracuse 66 points, and East Carolina (as someone pointed out, that team rebounded). The coaching staff should be ashamed of themselves for not getting the team ready Saturday.

If Golden wants to win a national championship, or even the Coastal Division, he needs to toughen up and hold his assistants accountable. The offensive line is the only unit that has been consistently good this season. Everyone other than Kehoe should be up for review.

Fire that rat... that wanna-de defensive coach...Boys is time to send another plane with a clear message over the stadium. FIRE THE DC... SAVE THE CANES...

miami will never beat the Mighty Gators. I have been saying for year's, since the game was scheduled, that on Sept. 7, the best team in Florida is going to beat the worst team in Florida by 40 points. Even worse is the NCAA is going to give the cheating Canes the death penalty...I guarantee it. Shapiro and the thugs will be blown out of their rented stadium.

Cursie, talking about credibility...you Gator nimrod, you're not fooling anyone with your act. Your Gator posts are all over the Palm Beach Post site and other Canes and Gators blogs. How's that 4 win season going...laughing at you! I love putting you on tilt Cursie!!

AL GOLDEN IS THE BEST COACH IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!

it's not complicated... fire coach no d & get someone with some fire & an agressive scheme

All of this incessant calling for coach D'No's head is falling on deaf eyes...

Al Golden said it himself, he aint listening to that.

meant: ears.

THE WORST POSTER IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL RELATED BLOGGING getting used like the each of the Pedo State roommates orifices while they were playing pitch and catch with each other the way Jerry showed them to back in the day, yet again.

If you think UM needs a new coordinator, you really think they need a new head coach because the two are joined from their groin to their rectum and have been since the 80's.

THE WORST POSTER IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL RELATED BLOGGING just started drooling at the thought of that. What a rainbow keyboard warrior.

Now go bring up something that happened two months ago to try and deflect from the worst blowout losing streak UM has ever suffered from. no, rablerouser, Randy Shannon was fired bc of 5-7, 7-6, 9-4, 7-6 seaosn,s all the while losing to UVA 48-0 in the OB, and losing to USF while simultaneously holding the supposed #1 recruiting class in the US in 2008- Furthermore, he only had like 6 commits at this time on the eve of his canning, while Golden has guess what? 28!!!!

if you cant see that you are a blind a55 mf

From a known source Mark D'nodefense contract has been bought out. He will finish the season.

Thank you Lord

The DC has to go.

LOL d, dont be hatin' because the "ufelony to one stop from a bowl game" train derailed.

I have no problem with the new depth chart. My only question is what took so long. Duh coach Golden, nothing kills a team chemistry like playing guys everyone knows shouldnt be starting. Thats why Coker and Shannon is no longer the head coach. Guys like Cornelius, Highsmith, Jimmy Gaines, Curtis Porter, Olsen Piere and Anthony Chickillo. Yes Chickillo. These are guys that have been starting for 2 plus yrs and have not made a play yet. I dont know why McCord, Muhammed, Armbrister, Kirby and Jamal Carter are not getting more playing time. Also to coach Coley. When it was evident that we couldnt stop there offense in the 2nd half. Stop running no huddle and stop throwing the damn ball especially in the red zone when we are averaging 8yds a rush. RUN THE DAMN BALL, THATS THE FORMULA FOR WINNING..

9>5>2, U only post when its an opportunity to disparage a 3 ring Cane like RS, who we all know was not a good HC.

He had 6 commits on the eve of his canning, but who was one of them?

U guessed it the one who is singlehandedly responsible for EVERY SINGLE WIN Al Golden and D'no have!

Duke Johnson!

U see what happens without him right? 3 weeks of proof.

Question for everyone who says we don't have the elite talent. Do we have elite coaching. Does this coaching staff know how to utilize elite talent . Definitely don't know how to use the talent that's already there. If you to be the best go out and get the best coach available. Raheem Morris, Kirby Smart, Jim Leavitt and Mike Leach. The short list.

What's worse, losing to usf in ot or gettin embarrassed by duke?

When Virginia beats us on Saturday and has 500 yards of offense. The tight ends and running backs for UVA will look like all-american first round picks. We will lose by 2 TDs and Al and his shower buddy will blame everything but themselves. It's very sad to be a cane fan.

shalallalaal has turned Hurricane football into powderpuff ball first with letting Butch go, then hiring RS and now goldie and d'no nothing about defense.

The sickness that infects Hurricane football starts at the top with the boft hiring shallaalalala and the AD who hired goldie who makes excuses for his butt buddy d'o.

After they are all let go, it will take a real coach and a real DC a year or two to dust off the Howard Schnellenberger playbooks for offense and defense he brought to the Canes from Don Shula and the Dolphins.

Posted by: Canefan72 | November 18, 2013 at 09:45 AM

Donna didn't 'let Butch go'. He was gone under Tad Foote, before Donna arrived. Get a clue, get a grip, and get your facts straight. After that you should get a life!

Also the defense was all world after stymieing Florida. The team lacks leadership in the locker-room. Where are the guys that are not going to let []_[] lose. We need a Duke of the defense and obviously miss the Duke of the offense.

I am growing tired of the defensive scheme, but how manny missed tackles are we gonna see?

When Georgia Southern beats us Gators on Saturday and has 500 yards of offense. The tight ends and running backs for that 1AAA team they will look like all-american first round picks. We will lose by 4 TDs and Willy M. and his shower buddy Brent Peace will blame everything but themselves. It's always been very sad to be a gator fan, but never more so than now. We can't even qualify for a bowl game...4 wins...yuk!

OKAY THAT IS IT!! GOT DAMN IT HE MUST GO AND AS ALONG TIME CANE FAN IF GOLDEN DO NOT GET RID OF HIM THAN HE MUST GO.. I'M SORRY FOR BEING SO BLUNT AND FOR THE PROFANITY BUT I AM STILL PISSED OFF OVER SATURDAY AFTERNOON.. THIS DC DOES NOT KNOW CRAP AND HE CANNOT GET BEST EFFORT OUT OF HIS PLAYERS.. WHY ? BECAUSE THEY KNOW HE WILL NOT LET THEM PERFORM USING THE SKILLS THAT GOT THEM TO THE U.. THIS STAFF SPENDS TOO MUCH TIME TRYING TO CREATE A STYLE OF PLAY THAT THESE GUYS HATE.. THEY HAVE GIVEN UP ON DUNNO AND THEY HOPE HE IS FIRED.. THE ONLY ONES SPEAKING HIGHLY OF HIM ARE JUST HAPPY TO BE STARTING AND WILL SAY THAT CAUSE IT'S THE CORRECT THING TO SAY.. EVER SINCE THE NCAA CRAP ENDED WE HAVE NOT WON A GAME AND HAVE PLAYED WORST SINCE THE RULING CAME DOWN.. WAS IT PART OF THE PLAN ? WELL THINK ABOUT THIS !! BEFORE THE RULING DUNNO'S DEFENSE WON HOW MANY GAMES? ABOUT 4 RIGHT ? WASN'T THE TEAM PLAYING "LIGHTS OUT BETTER THE 2ND HALF THAN THE 1ST ? YES! THEN AS SOON AS THE RULING ALL OF A SUDDEN THESE SAME GUYS CAN'T TACKLE, CAN'T GET PRESSURE AND CAN'T CONVERT ON 3RD & SHORT. THIS STAFF HAS RUIN THIS SEASON AND IF ANY OF U WANT DIFFERENT RESULTS THEN STAY "STAY AWAY FROM THE GAMES" AND SUPPORT THE TEAM ON RADIO & TELEVISION AND IF YOU DO GO PLEAS PUT UP SIGNS"D'O MUST GO" AND LET GOLDEN HEAR IT ALL NIGHT EVEN IF THE CANES WIN BY 50 "D'O MUST GO !!

9>5>2, I only post when its an opportunity to disparage the Canes, who we all know I do so using 20 or so aliases.

Randy Shannon had 6 commits on the eve of his canning, but who was one of them?

U guessed it, the one who Al Golden singlehandedly has developed into our best player due to Golden's U-Tough program and his coaching.

Duke Johnson!

U see that even with Duke the Canes lack of talent has hurt them...next year's recruiting class will change all that, right?

Defensive coach and scheme are bottom of the barrel!!! Morris is horrible, whether it be because of his injury or his blindness!!!!! It will Golden's undoing if he lets this all continue!!!

The answer is not to fire the coordinator. The answer is to get him somehelp. Hire one more coordinator, and please, coach Golden, stop coaching the special teams.
Concentrate on other things like recruiting. and game plan instead of the special team. Let's win the next game.

norm

the guy isn't just the D coordinator, he is raking in a half million a year. Now he needs a coordinator to help him coordinate, and we also need a special teams coach, an additional expense, because Golden can't coach the team and special teams too??? When does the madness end. Do we get a co-co-cordinator if it doesn't all work out? Do we get a special teams assistant after we hire a special teams assistant to rectify things? Or do we look in our bathroom mirror and say, jj, erickson, schnellenberger, davis and shannon never asked for these kind of things, and maybe the guy requesting these things is over his head? Ya think?

Opposing Offensive Coordinators must be salivating week in and week out the last 3 years watching game film of the Cane Defense. It it the most unaggressive, vanilla, unsophisticated, non blitzing, non stunting, with decent corners 10 yeards off the ball dropping immediately at the snap, with below average Saftey play over the top and just ONE NFL prospect in the front seven. But all that is ok, because they all make up for by being pizz-poor tacklers.

IF, GOD ONLY IF, We would just play across man press with 7 in the box bringing 5 and 6 at a time BANZAI Defense, if only just for 1 First Half, sure we may get a few big hits on us, but I PROMISE we will put FEAR into opposing Offenses causing multiple mistakes, turnovers, short fields and Defensive T.D.s ! No more of the sitback, bend, bend, bend, bend, hope, bend BULL$HEET !!! Do we have the personal to do it ? WHO THE HELL KNOWS !!! WE NEVER TRY IT !!!

but I suppose Penn. State won games the Golden n Dno way, so that is that.

Saturday is senior day, put your bitching behind you and go out and support the seniors that have been under the NCAA thumb for the past 3 years, they deserve your support.
GO CANES!!!!!

morris has to play...he is the best QB UM has....cant chance losing the next 2 game or UM will be in the "Toilet Bowl"
