« Gameday blog: Miami Hurricanes at Pitt Panthers | Main | Duke beats Carolina, heads to ACC Title game; UM shifts focus to final exams, bowl practices, recruiting »

UM's regular season ends today in bitter-cold Pittsburgh with Coastal title still in play. Will it be a happy ending?

PITTSBURGH -- It's hard to believe that today is the last regular-season game for the Hurricanes.

Where did the season go?

It feels like yesterday that Howard Schnellenberger was talking to all of us just before kickoff at the opener on Aug. 30th.

Now it's down to Pittsburgh, at Pittsburgh, in the bitter-cold of Heinz Field.

Miami opened as a 2.5-point favorite, and is now a 2-point favorite, from what I just saw.

To me, this game is so important because it will cast an overall impression on the season. If the Hurricanes win, they'll have rebounded admirably from that ugly three-game losing streak at FSU (expected), against Virginia Tech (not expected) and at Duke (not expected).

A UM victory also would put Miami in prime position for a decent bowl, such as the Chick-fil-A -- and better yet, for a chance to win the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference should North Carolina beat Duke tomorrow and should Virginia beat Virginia Tech.

I just don't see Virginia beating Virginia Tech, though it's a rivalry game and it is at UVA. However, if all the stars align for the Hurricane, they would meet FSU again in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 7 in Charlotte. Can you imagine that?

If the Canes lose, suddenly the 7-0 start is completely overshadowed by ending the season with four losses in five games. The bowl situation becomes murkier, too.

Pittsburgh has won its last two of three games, starting with a 28-21 victory Nov. 9 at home on national television (ABC) against Notre Dame in its coldest home conditions (windy, with temperatures in the 40s) until today (kickoff expected to be in low 30s, dropping to mid-to-high 20s by end). The next week the Panthers lost at home to UNC 34-27. Last Saturday, Pitt beat Syracuse 17-16 on the road.

PItt's total offense and rushing offense are poor statistically. But it has two talented receivers in senior Devin Street (51 catches for 854 yards and seven touchdowns this season) and freshman Tyler Boyd (68 catches for 903 yards and six touchowns). Street, however, hurt his ankle against North Carolina and his elbow at Syracuse and, per Pittsburgh-Post Gazette beat writer Sam Werner, was limited this week in practice. So, we'll see if and how much Street plays today.

The Hurricanes' biggest obstacle in this game is expected to be defensive tackle Aaron Donald, a 6-0, 285-pound senior who is a finalist for just about every national defensive award out there. He is an amazing talent, shedding blocks with ease.

"Aaron Donald has been a one-man wrecking crew,'' Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said.

Donald leads the nation in tackles for loss, ranks 10th in sacks and 11th in forced fumbles. His blocked PAT last week at Syracuse made the difference in Pitt's 17-16 victory.

The question is, can UM's offensive line hold him off? It's very doubtful UM C Shane McDermott can do it alone.

If the Canes can hold off Donald and hold onto the ball despite the cold, they should win this game.

We'll see.

Happy day-after Thanksgiving to all of you. Enjoy the game.

Well, glad we won.

I eat my 8-4 , 8-5 prediction.

was right about giving up another 5 spot on defense. oh well, DNO gets another year, fo sho. disappointed in that.

Think Duke could lose to UNC, but VT will probably beat UVA. UVA only looked decent against us. How funny that VT might play for another ACCCG?

Holy COLEY (tm)!!!
Gus Edwards looked good too.
Good job by the OLine handling their stud.
Defense: secondary looked okay; front is garbage, as usual.

Lack of talent in defense

We need some good LB. Current LB group is not enough.

Hope DNO can recruit someone like Vilma Lewis...

lolol 501 yds for pitt. How many teams DIDN'T PUT AT LEAST 450-500 ON US THIS YEAR?

Congrats Canes on a 9-3 season, did it go as well as we would've liked, NO, was it as bad as it could've been, HELL NO. No turnovers, the offense picked it up, special teams did as well, the D gave some, but did what it needed to do, and caused some to's and a well needed sack. Lets get to a good bowl game and finish 10-3 for the first time in 10 years. Sorry we won Calvin, I know that's killing you, lol.

501 yards and 31 points to a team averaging 336 and 26 respectively coming into the game today.

Time for some new coaches.

9-3 is IMPROVEMENT. Congratulations to Coach Golden, his staff, and of course the players that made it happen. Still bummed with the Defense giving up another 500 yards, but we'll take a win as we rebuild this thing. I look forward to a solid bowl game, perhaps our first 10-win season in years.

I know that's not good enough for the idiots on this board, but from one who is actually involved in real football (not just picking fantasy players), I am proud of this team.

Posted by: Great win by a 6 win team today!
----------------------------------------------------

You're NOT a 6 win team dude, you're a 4 win team and about to have your 8th loss. Your Gators stink, and that's pretty much the jist of it, lol.

If I were coaching, we'd be 12-0 and joining the SEC next year!

Congrats to the Canes' offensive and Special teams today. The defense formation over the past two weeks look much better prior to the snap, except for our DBs. I will give the DC some praises tonight, because he at least changed the front 7. Now, I can see what he was doing the past several months, protecting his slow LBs. The OC actually used his TEs today on crossing routes too. Next year, I will just let the coaches call their game and I will just support as a fan. Nevertheless, I still believe the best lineman should be on defense, #44 move back to outside LB, and CB move in 5 yards. Coley need to be in the slot next year, because he can make people miss on short patterns. Good game to Coach Golden and staff.

These kids should be proud, they fought hard all season. It's not their fault the defensive scheme wasn't enough to beat VT and Duke.

Our season was over when we lost to FSU, VT, DUKE just poor defense and coaching, Pitt averages 105 yds a game rushing, today 22o yds, go figure, DE are way to slow and dont take the right angles, just SOS.

It's funny how some of us cry when the Canes lose.. and the other half of the posters cry when they win.

Which one are you?

'We' when they are winning.. 'y'all' when you think they will lose. Move on, this is not the team for you.

Man I hope FSU don't score 80 on us on saturday

People saying Pitt is not a good team don't know anything. They beat Notre Dame, and most of their losses were by a small margin. Our team went on the road In a rare cold weathered game and performed. Props to the seniors and the coaches.

Dallas Crawford-14 carries for 22 yards-2.2 ave.
Gus Edwards- 11 carries for 64 yards - 5.8 ave.
Gus Edwards deserves to be elevated to the no. 1 running back for the bowl game!

Hswalden U for get U are on a Canes board. Our season isn't over until we play a bowl game. YoUr season was over when Georgia southern beat U down in grille.LMAO at haters hatin'!

No shame in losing to FSU, they are really good. VT and Duke, that was the end because it was 2 losses in our division.

Season's over, time to start looking toward next year, of course a non-Hurricane like fake fan would still be talking about beating the worst team a program fields in 34 years like it's an accomplishment when it happened 10 weeks ago.

Almost stupider than the defensive coaching from Temple. Almost.

In ACC play the D is giving up on avg 32.5 pts a gm. We will never win with stats like that. DontKnow needs to go

Donofrio back next season = same horrble D inspite of whatever studs they bring in

Bad day for the haters!!! Are those baboons ever right??

Nice win Canes. Now go win the bowl game and finish strong!

Go Canes!!

LOL ... we still are playing a bowl and the NCAA cant take that away. Thats more practice time less offtime and right back into it in the spring to see who our qb will be. Another embarrassing beatdown at gville looms and then its ova fo the gate's!

The Canes warmed up prior to today's Pitt game in 30 degree weather...shirtless!!The past several cold weather games they wore so much clothing they couldn't move.

To the cowardly haters losers...that's a culture change!! Laughing at you girls!!AL GOLDEN IS THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

33 degrees is no big deal dude. I shoveled my driveway in a T-shirt and jeans in colder weather. 33 degrees is perfect football weather!

There are studs coming on d...

Yeah those studs are coming here to stand straight up at snap of ball instead of attacking the line and to play 10-15 yds off receivers. Lets not forget about the LB's who play about 7- 10 yds off the line of scrimmage as well.

The difference between UF and UM, UM will keep Golden no matter what, UF will? move on and get the right coach. Again you will see our taillights as we run by you.

You sweet little girl, You shoveled your driveway in a T-Shirt...I 'm sure you were also wearing your jorts after a fresh bikini wax. You cowardly Gator hillbillies are always good for a laugh. Best of all...you are so spineless you are petrified to use just one screen name...laughing at you little girl!!

21-16

You girls quit the Miami series for a second time!!

M-y Florida Gators will beat FSU. The defense will get it done, congrats to the canes, even if they beat my Gators. We gave them canes the game, Miami did not earn it. But that was then.

We better have a top 10 recruiting class..

Yankee. .

Dino can't last much longer.

Watching the game on DVR and can't help but notice how poor our LB's are outside of DZP. Jimmy Gaines always seems to be in over his head. Also our safeties consistently take bad angles and try to tackle the ball carrier/wr's with the heads on the wrong side! If the guy is running to the side of you, your head goes in front of his chest and you wrap up. Too many times Kacy Rogers and Jenkins had their head on behind the runner and had guys run through their "arm tackle".

Hilarious...you cowardly girls are fresh off of having Georgia Southern, a team that most high schools would beat, demolish you hillbillies and now you show up on the site of the team who beat you up in the parking lot, the stands, on the field then took your women and used them up and you knock kneed quit the series for a second time and you claim you are going to best the Canes, the team that has always owned you little girls.

Here's the thing Gomer...you've won 4 games and didn't even qualify for a bowl...you have never been in the class of the Canes and never will be.

As I keep pointing out...you are such a coward you are petrified to use just one screen name...That truly is a Gator thing!! I am laughing at you!!

21-16 Bubba Gump!!!

Recruit, recruit, recruit! Close strong baby!

Obviously you're an idiot and immature. You're on here acting like an internet tough guy using racial innuendos (baboons, etc) and not using your "real name" to own your words. You're a true "troll".

When you grow up in the snow belt and face real winters, you laugh at these clowns (you obviously be one of those clowns) bragging about running around with your shirt off in ideal football weather. If it was 13 degrees then talk about it, if not, it's just as dumb as showing up at a press conference decked out in military fatigues or cameo pants and a wife beater.

Tough situation handled well by Al Golden. He had seniors that sacrificed but weren't of the highest talent level but stuck with them. I appreciate his loyalty and sense of responsibility to them. Moving forward He will be able to recruit more talented players and I think--all things being equal--you'll see a better product on the field. The missed tackles are not acceptable, but most of those kids won't be back next year.

Al has a ton of currency for his stewardship of the program during the NCAA saga. Now he is free of the negative recruiting to do what I think he does best: sell him and sell []_[]. I expect him to close this recruiting cycle in a very strong fashion. Still 2 years away with strong classes from a BCS contender.

A good win on the road. I am glad to see it happen.

In the bowl, our defense is lilely to get beat up as they did today by a decent opponent.

If it Louisville, it is passing time for Teddy... So, the key is our offense scoring well and controlling the ball.

I like Gus Edwards as a big back that is a fast slasher and who takes on tacklers. If the O Line is not blocking well, sweeps to Dallas will not work. He is better on quicker plays between tackle and guard. He made a real nice run on one play that included a good cutback downfield. He plays tough and I respect him.

Underneath passing balanced with the run and a few shots downfield here and there will also help the defense stay off the field.

So 9 - 3 is a record many teams would love. Since Canes' fans have high expectations, and are football savvy, most are probably happy with the win but cognizant of our chronic problems on D.

Go Canes!

"Golden's first 22 games: 11-11
Next 14 games: 11-3
That is improvement" Chris Yandle

I do think it's time to look for new defensive staff members but we also need talent on that side of the ball. The missed tackles and just watching players like Highsmith proves it. Love them but I'm excited about the new recruits.

D'Onofrio must be a relative of Larry Blustein. To try and prop up this awful defense that again gave up 500 yards (232 rushing) is outrageous!! Somebody has to evaluate D'Onofrio's return. We've watched these meltdowns for multiple years now. Allowing Pitt to score 31 points is an embarrassment.
Golden says "I'm proud of these guys"---Those guys need a lot of work stopping the run.

When you grow up in the snow belt and face real winters (oh, boo-hoo!) you laugh at these clowns (you obviously be one of those clowns) (nice use of the English language Bubba Gump) bragging about running around with your shirt off in ideal football weather. If it was 13 degrees then talk about it, if not, it's just as dumb as showing up at a press conference decked out in military fatigues or cameo pants and a wife beater.

C'mon Jethro...your Jorts are shutting off the blood flow to your tiny brain. You have claimed you are a Canes fan and now you attack current and Miami players for showing swagger.

You cowardly Gators always show your true colors...a yellow pee stain down your pant leg. 21-16 Gomer and then you tucked tail and quit the Miami series. Nice game against Georgia Southern Jethro. Congratulations on that 4 win season and a coach that even a chalkboard get's the better of...laughing at you!!!!

And as always...you are too cowardly to use but one screen name...having no spine is a Gator thang--we 9 & 3 Canes would never understand!!

Good win.... A lot of u hate the process. Some of u just want that overnight biz..instant oatmeal, instant grits, etc.. We are still trimming some fat and it takes time. Recruiting is gonna just get better and that's all u can ask. The D staff needs a lift and if Bo Pelini gets fired we should hire the guy to be co- DC.. Just saying'''

Bo Pelini is unstable. That press conference today was hilarious.

Coach Golden is a good man and that is a lot to say in todays football. He has gotten my respect and will do so in the future because he has integrity, a moral compass, and high values. With all of that he is a coach which should be admired.
A canes fan since Coach Gus

Maybe because of the holes on D. Lets not forget not a single guy on D will be drafted early.

Explayers that are now in the NFL say it isn't schemes. But you armchair QBs still think it is. You guys continue to crack me up. Improvements on that D all around with the same exact players from last year. Doh.

All you negativity nancies need to go to Canserspace and get your free T-shirt.

"if Bo Pelini gets fired we should hire the guy to be co- DC.."

Please, no. Let's just recruit...Bring Soldinger if anyone. Offer Randy assistant head coach if anything.

If some of the people here on the blog believe coordinating defense is easy as 1,2,3; just play 4 down linemen with LBs 3 yards off the ball and play press man all day, then we don't need a new DC. A caveman can do it. We simply need better athletes.

If the scheme is not entirely to blame then we are back to square 1 and in need better tackling, footballing athletes. Golden owed some of these kids for carrying the program through the last couple of seasons. Especially when they did their part as student athletes. I like that he let go some of the 3rd parties and those kids want to come back. I like that the recruiting class is bolstered by some of the better local kids in a way it hasn't been the last several years.

I like that some local studs are still out there to be had as we come to a close this season on a decent note.

FYI, these kids coming in play football and see the missing of assignments, freelancing, bad angles and poor technique in tackling that make them believe they can come in and contribute. We have good leadership and a good weight program. Just get the studs and we will see what we do. It's not like we're UF.

501 yards against a 3-5 conference team....what a laugher....UM almost lost yesterday and a 10 point win is a disgrace against this team.....

golden looked like an idiot in his white shirt and 35' weather......

season is over....UM will not overcome duke/VT.....next year like I have always said UM goes nowhere since we don't have a QB.....morris was always the best thing UM had.....sentiment is also expressed by lou holtz as well....

2010: average record of opponents 7-5

offense - 5052 yards @ 421 average per game
defense - 3876 yards @ 323 average per game

2013: average record of opponents 5-7

offense - 5362 @ 446 average per game
defense - 4989 @ 415 average per game

total waste of time for 3 years.....and this comparison includes ridicules wins that padded stats via savanna state 637 yards @ usf @ 540......

bloggers are in complete fantasy land if you think al golden will bring UM back......

a 9-3 team not even ranked in the top 25.....what does that tell you?

but when either Louisville or Missouri crush UM in a bowl......then there will be no question that golden/dnofrio need to get fired....

IDIOTS:

Ranked Oregon had to pull all the stops to beat unranked Oregon State and allowed 30 plus points

Ranked Fresno State allowe Powerhouse San Jose State (also unranked) to put 62 on them and 450 yds in the first half!!!

Ranked UCF struggled against mighty 2-8 USF, who Miami destroyed

Wheres the outcry about that? Miami had to do what it had to do. It f--ing won!!!!!!!!!!! in 30 degree weather! against a power running team!!!!! Against a team with a freshman who just beat Larry Fitzgerald reception record!!!! YOu all know who Larry Fitzgerald is? If not one of th ebst receivers in the NFL last 10 yrs?

BUT>>>>>>>>>>

Here's what I observe:

Gus Edwards is a machine. He should be the #1 rb until Duke gets back.

Dallas Crawford- whats up with him the last 3 games? He changed how he hits holes.

Miami has zero. I mean ZILCH. I mean absolutely ZERO pass rush. ZERO strength and nastiness up front, ZERO DTackles. ZERO pass rush from the edges. Its starts there!!!! Thats why teams run for hundreds of yardss. Thast why QBs have all day to pass. Our D line is a sieve. My 95 yr old granma can walk through that all day!!!! Its not Donofrio. Its not the scheme Its our weak ass, fat, slow, uninspired D line!

Recruiting must take that into consideration.

Allen Hurns is a beast. 2nd rounder at worse.

Stacy Coley- Many great things to come.

Denzel- Brother you need to be more consistent

Tracy Howard- Learn totackle. DOnt be afraid to hit.

We need safeties and D-linemen.

Al Golden is an extraordinary leader, coach and recruiter.

When almost two dozen Canes came barreling on the field for pre-game warm-ups with no shirts on in the 30 degree weather it was a huge compliment from the players to their head coach. They love and believe in the man. And if you watched the video you saw the astonished looks on the Pittsburgh players faces as they were aware that under the last two coaching regimes the Canes couldn't play in temperatures below 70 degrees. That message was loud and clear and the Pittsburgh players knew they were in big trouble.

Despite the NCAA assault and the schools recruiting the players we were recruiting telling players we would receive the death penalty, Al Golden has miraculously recruited a 2014 top 3 recruiting class. That accomplishment alone is astounding.

Just yesterday, the biggest Cane hater of all, Mark May was lavishing praise on Coach Golden as did the second biggest Cane hater, Lou Holtz.

To the real Canes fans on this blog, don't believe the haters on this blog who are a combination of screen name changing losers and cowardly Gators who were just blown out by Georgia Southern (21-16). The Canes future is extremely bright and we will soon capture our 6th National Championship.

AL GOLDEN IS THE BEST COACH IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!
