« Gameday blog: Miami Hurricanes at Duke Blue Devils | Main | Here's the transcript of Coach Al Golden talking to reporters right after the Hurricanes lost to Duke »

Hurricanes receiver Herb Waters talks to the media, says the blame goes to everyone for loss to Duke

Sophomore receiver Herb Waters caught nine passes from Stephen Morris on Saturday for 116 yards and two touchdowns, including one that went 50 yards in Duke's 48-30 victory.

And Waters played with an injured groin during the game, said UM coach Al Golden. But Waters refused to pin the blame solely on the defense.

"Everybody’s down but we can’t be,'' Waters said Saturday night. "We’ve got plenty more ball to play. So we have to get back on Monday and get back to work.

"We had a great week in practice. It’s just that we came out and missed some opportunities. Duke capitalized on a lot of opportunities."

Reporter: "Herb, you’re going to look at the stats eventually and see you had 9 catches for 116 yards, you guys threw for 379 and had 565 yards of total offense and came up 18 points short. How much pressure is that on the offense? Obviously you’re under a lot of pressure to score a lot of points."

Waters: "With those kind of stats you’d probably think we’d overcome that with a victory. But like I said before, we missed out on some opportunities. Duke capitalized on some opportunities. You’ve got to get back to work. I’m pretty sure we’ll go over the film and fix what we messed up on."

Reporter: "Third downs are a problem again – 5 of 15. Why is everything so good on first and second down but you struggle on third?"

Waters: "To be honest, I don’t really know. I mean we practiced hard on third downs. We just didn’t execute on some of the plays that Coach [James] Coley called."

Reporter: "Early in the game it was learned that Maryland beat Virginia Tech. Did you guys know about that?"

Waters:  "Yeah, it got out. I feel like if we wouldn’t have [known], we would have continued to play like how we’re supposed to play. I feel like we knew and some people let down. We’ve just got to get back to work and like we always say, keep everything on the outside and just keep grinding. In my opinion I feel like it would have been better had we had not known. I just feel like – lack of poise. We knew what we had at stake but we didn’t execute it. That’s why I feel like it would have been better if we did not know.’’

Reporter: "How did you find out about the Virginia Tech game?"

"To be honest I can’t really remember. I forgot who said what. It just leaked out. It is what is it. It was little by little."

Reporter: "A couple of your teammates tweeted during the game that this was embarrassing. Would you say this defense is embarrassing for the team?"  Note: Waters was not told that the teammates were Duke Johnson and Phillip Dorsett, both of whom didn't travel with the team because of injuries.

Waters: “I mean if a couple of teammates tweeted that in the game then I feel like they don’t want it bad enough. If they’re teammates with everybody on the team, no matter what else they’re saying I have faith in all my teammates and everybody. It wasn’t just on the defense, it was on us; it was on special teams. Everybody didn’t come through how they’re supposed to. I give all full credit to Duke. They’re a great team and they just came out and played. They wanted it badly enough.’’

Recommendation: Bring back RS as assistant head coach and DC. That way, he'll immediately make the D a Top 3 contender nationwide and have some say so i the O and overall coaching duties.

Richmond Heightscane and HTC,

Are you Ohio guys? I grew up on Brainard Road, just around the corner from the Richmond mall. A part of the country where football is king and coaches are born!

You both make good points.

HTC, Golden leveraged his position and UM's disaster into a long term contract. It makes economic sense. He could have bolted because there was a positive image of him around the country.

I Still think the guy has fundamental integrity, but he is too rigid with kids that don't tow the line and in his coaching approach. As someone pointed out, he was a DC. He squelchs the spirit of some South Florida kids that have aggressive attitude, in favor of "the process."

Also above, nice analysis of Golden's record at Temple against mediocrity. To turn around a train wreck does not mean you can coach a champion.

Charlie Strong would be a huge hire for UM. And a major winner as long a they played by the rules.

And Butch, are you out there?

Painful times for Canes fans, and change is needed. It is the coaches that are responsible for the mental attitude and motivation of the players. Now, the Canes are a beaten up group, especially the D. D'Onofrio and Golden are not the guys to heal their battered sense of self as long as the discussion is about "fixing it, the process and bringing your technique!".

im embarrassed to be a cane right now..how can defense get worse each game

im embarrassed to be a cane right now..how can defense get worse each game

im embarrassed to be a cane right now..how can defense get worse each game

The only reason Shannon would come back and work for his replacement would be his love for the University of Miami as he would say.

Other than that nope!!

Zakke I would call myself intelligent just observant of what you do not what you say.

^^^^ would not^^^

Every expert in the country would agree that UM has better athletes on defense than Duke. So this performance has to be blamed on the coaches inability to motivate or their inability to change defensive strategies in the middle of the game. Golden has to realize that his boy is way over his head. It was good enough at Temple when you were playing nobodies, but at this level you have to be able to adapt on the run which obviously he can't .

Gallo is right. Gotta clean house and bring in a completely and more knowledgeable, more capable and better talent developing staff. Gallo previous list was fine but I think Schiano and Kirby Smart should top that list. Both could keep class together, got hand on pulse of college football, can recruit, develop players and can scheme! Golden with his book, concern for concussions, playing music during practice...etc, is all non football stuff. He's practicing Football Theory and it's not working. Will be the same when better recruits come in. They just aren't good coaches.

this aint NFL where talent is close, and coaching matters. We had 3 years of 20=30 4 and 5 star kids that would have signed with the U sign at Alabama(Amari Cooper and he said it was due to sanctions), bridgewater , I mean College all americans.

We played 3 star and 2 Star D lineman. Our front 7 is basically Dukes team also

This class has 4 of the top 11 DTs and DEs in nation coming in, and now we are 1=2 classes away/

LASTLY. WE are missing Duke, Dorsett and Stay Coley. Are top 3 playmakers once coley went out

D DOES NOT HAVE THE HORSES AND WE DONT HAVE LB's. Where are the Vilmas, DJ WIlliams, Jessie Armsteads, Michael Barrows

Golden needs to go out and land 3=4 5 star LB's

Wow...starting to think Gallo and Calvin are geniuses....I'm really starting to get tired with the softness of this team....starts from the top.

1. s fla media watch other college games like i did yesterday. The U is the only one I saw where the DB played 10-15 yards off the WR almost every play. LB play 5-9 yards off every play. It's the scheme. S. carolina had 3 freshmen play LB and they are 3 star recuits. Stop making excuses. This D has stop no one all year!! if you don't have talent like everyone says then come up with a scheme that fits your talent that's what good coaching does. Look around

2. Ask the coaches why when it was 1st and goal on the 7 and we are running the ball at 6 yards a clip we throw 3 passes and settle for a FG. Also ask why we didin't run more when your D sucks like ours when we could of run for 400 yds easily we are throwing it into double coverage. Offense to blame as well. Everyone knows our D sucks come up with a offense plan to keep them off the field and kill the clock.

3. Hire ED O for defense. He was here before. He is a great recuiter. and by the way see what his team did against Stanford last night.

Apparently a feed I saw on Sportsmanias said that the Canes dropped out of the AP poll. Do you think its the coaches fault or the players fault? I personally think it's the coaches fault. The offensive coordinator has been running the same offense for the last 3 years and our defense hasn't been adjusting well. My 11 year old sisters plays better defense in NCAA Football 14 than the Canes did this Saturday.

Amari cooper said no such thing!

He didn't get offered until the last minute because he didn't go to AG's football camp 1st! All the while he was bama's #1 receiver prospect!

Hell at one point I believe Saban had him convince he could play db.

Congratulations on another stunning collapse. Way to go scUM Nation!

Another despicable loss in the ACC, canes just cant compete, maybe you guys should move to the new Big East Conference next year. Looking up at NC State, Wake Forest and Duke must be tough for you but hey look at the bright side you have the best coach in football rigghttt?

I gave them a chance, but to see week end and week out teams running the very same plays as the last team shows that no adjustments are being made. I you tackle we wouldn't be losing, thats just garbage. Who has tried to make an open field tackle from 10 to 15 yards deep with someone coming at you wide open. Not as easy as its made to be. Fact is there is no one on the weak side of this defense and they slant the line to the stong side as well. Is golden tied to sharpiro, makes me wonder, he said the best has yet to come, maybe this is it. If they run the same D next week I'm done until we got new coaches. I live in Raleigh, NC and hearing the these fans is gonna cause me to lose it

Im tired of hearing the they can't afford another coach. Pay a coach and the money will work itself out through more fans at a empty stadium. More money would be made by actually getting to and winning an acc championship. Then the money from a bcs game all could be made by paying a better coaching staff.

Sidcane or Five posting under several different names indicates damaged psyche, what say you both eh. A dismal game and more disappointment meets your team again, enough of ill will towards others take your medicine and find a hobby, what say you eh

Another ACC whoopin, canes cant compete with them devils. Duke toyed with them boys tonight and that QB you have looks like a bad Jacory wanna be.BAWAHHHH

dbc, yup Cleveland born and raised 139th and Union/Kinsmen, I currently reside right around the corner from where U grew up in Mayfield Heights.

LISTEN it aint the coaching. Example coker went 12-0 in 02 03 seasns)lost to OSU In 03 fiesta_

Did coker become a bad coach in 2006 when each yr they got worse Or did he recruit bad?

RECRUITING MATTERS IN COLLEGE Texas LOnghorns are down , Baylor is up? FSU Is Up, UF and Miami are down. Miami had sanctions, so the top kids went to Ala, Fsu, Louisville, arkansas, UF.

THATS A FACT PEOPLE> THIS IS OUR 1st TOP 5 CLASS In 6 years

YOU GOT OWNED AGAIN!!! GOLDY LOOKED LIKE A PSYCHE WARD PATIENT ON THE SIDE LINE AGAIN!!! scUM DO LIKE THOSE DEVILS THOUGH AND SO THEY BENT DOWN AGAIN.

And in 3 years from now, Dom will say it's the fans fault for telling the truth on here. Always an excuse, more time, next year, no talent, Fact is, Golden has had time to at the least show he can develop players. He can't, it shows. More time is just more wasted time. 3 bad hires in a row, killed Miami football.

Golden needs to go to any little league game in Dade or Broward and look at the level of Competition that 6 13 years show. You can't bottle up the emotions of these Florida kids thats not how there coached. they thrive off the spirit of the game. Miami's side line is completly flat. Never has it been so dead.

Charlie Strong, ASAP.

Al Golden inherited a football program in flames that had already slammed into the side of a mountain. It was toxic and had created enormous bad will amongst former Canes players, local high school coaches and recruits, along with the media. Then, the man was broadsided by an NCAA investigation designed to kill the program without having to officially assign the death penalty. Assigning the death penalty to the Canes would have set a modern day precedent that the NCAA didn't want to do or they would have found themselves in a position to do the same with programs that have favored nation status with them (SEC, etc.).

The first thing Big Al had to do was create a new culture, which meant cleaning the cupboards of toxic players that only had the 'me' mentality and saw their time at UM as only a short stopover on their way to the NFL. Those players said all the right things, but the work ethic, dedication and team first mentality were all missing. While Frank Gore didn't necessarily fit that mold, the toxic program was so pervasive that even when Frank declared for the NFL immediately after the season the first thing his agent said was Frank needed to get into shape and lose 25 lbs., which had he been in the shape he was during his time at UM as he was going into the NFL draft his knee injuries would have most probably been avoided and he would have been a top candidate for the Heisman Trophy as the best college player in the land. Now multiply that across an entire football team.

Over the last 3 years most all teams we competed with for recruits told them and their families that Miami was going to get the death penalty. Additionally, ESPN and others constantly found ways to bring up the Miami NCAA investigation while slowly and methodically going over each and every charge. Miami did not play a game over the last 3 years in which the NCAA investigation was not a bigger theme of the TV broadcasts than the games themselves. This was being hammered into the heads of the current players and recruits that was wildly destructive.

Yesterday was a perfect example of what the NCAA has done to the Canes recruiting and the terrible mess that Coach Golden inherited from Coach Shannon. Miami's defensive line was getting blown off the ball 3 yards or more on every Duke running play. That was not a failure in D'Onofrio's schemes, but an undeniable lack of talent. Those linemen being pushed back into the faces of the Canes linebackers completely destroyed any chance of the backers plugging the gapping holes that Duke was running through. Also, there was zero pass rush despite D'Onofrio trying a plethora of blitz packages because once again the defensive line was complete ineffectual. This has been the ongoing theme all season, which explains why our defense makes every QB we face look like Joe Montana. If your players are not talented enough to get pressure on the opposing QB's at the college level then the game becomes nothing more than an easy game of back yard pitch and catch with your kid. Lack of talent is the problem.

Coach Golden has a top 3, 2014 recruiting class coming into the Gables and this will be the start of the turn around of the program and will lead to National Championships in the coming years.

AL GOLDEN IS BY FAR THE BEST COACH IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!

our offense also needs to take blame for this loss. With our size advantage and talent that our OL LINE had over the Duke DL we should have been pushing them around like they did to us. As far as conversions in the Red Zone and on third downs, it's like panic sets in and a a 3 yd pass becomes a monumental task. Everyone on this team from players to coaches better check themselves or the real embarrassment woluld be losing at home to Virginia.

The rest of you that consider yourselves Cane fans and as I do, post your frustrations and criticism on this blog; check yourselves and show up to the game and do your part too .

See ya at W24 bring plenty of rum.

We need to get back to are base 4 3 defense cover two not that gimmick 3-4 defense we run. Man we lost to duke fu we still need to add some more horses to the stable because we have talent but we need some more depth especially on defense. Man i can not believe it duke we lost to duke. I like Al Golden alot i think he is on the right path but his friend the D Coordinator has to go and that is real. To all the 2014 2015 2016 recruits and so on don't look at this and run away to another school stay commited to miami come here and help fix the problem. HELL i am mad and i want all recruits to be mad at this so when everybody comes here every body can be mad together and fix this problem so it want happen again. SOUTH FLORIDA RECRUITS WE NEED YOU AND WE NEED YOU IN THE WORSE WAY. STAY COMMITED

WE WILL PULL THIS OUT

Posted by: Dom | November 16, 2013 at 06:18 PM

Said ALL the guys that pulled a train on ur mom the day u were conceived.

schiano is another golden.....his record knocks him out of consideration.....kirby smart is the logical pick since he has sabans playbook plus he doubles his salary at 2.2 million AND smart doesn't have to take over basically a saban legacy if saban moves on.....

but the the kind of courage that it would take from both shalala and blake to fire golden at the end of the season would be tremendous.....they don't have it.

administration will not force him out and have egg on their faces...they let golden self destruct....that's how they escape

take 1 look at Blake and see immediately on his face he is a pu...sy

at the rate winston is going UM is stuck in reverse until he graduates

Ron go away. Al Golden has never won. He is paid, extremely, well and no excuse can cover his failure. It was reported, while Randy Shannon was here, that there was to be no contact with Shapiro. If I knew that in Jacksonville, why did not Golden know from his research? If he didn't know, what does that say about his abilities as an organized leader?

But for Morris and the offense's miracle wins in the last minute against WF and UNC (which d'o tried to lose on the last play of the game), Miami would be 5-5.

golden and d'o are mediocre as are the AD and shalalalala and
the morons who blame the players or any other phony excuse. Can you just imagine in the med school they said it is okay to lose half your patients, or in the engineering school, it is okay if half of the overpasses fall apart like golden and d'o "coaching".

Posted by: Ron Zook | November 17, 2013 at 01:02 PM

Nothing but excuse ridden apologist and defeatist influenced drivel.

Well, I'm just glad we scheduled FAU & Savannah St. (instead of K. State & N. Dame), the Turds turned it over 5 times and somehow we beat UNC & Wake in the last seconds or this would be...

jeez, a 2-8 team. Even with the Turd, UNC & Wake Wins, 5-5 at best.

As good as this season "seemed" 3 weeks ago, it's possible that we've regressed since last year.

AL GOLDEN IS BY FAR THE BEST COACH IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!

Posted by: Ron Zook | November 17, 2013 at 01:02 PM

Seriously, give it up. It's become embarrassing and tiresome.

Ever since the "clouds" have passed, its been raining harder than ever.

Now golden is "BY FAR THE BEST...."

With every loss Ron Zook the Gator gets increasingly delusional and fervent upon upholding lies.

First and formost, I was deservingly EXCOMMUNICATED from that canespace for being a very, very NASTY Heretic. Because I dared to CALL OUT their BELOVED D'Onofrio.

Well, look at y'all CS/eoth bUbba's now!!

Oh, because I CALLED OUT D'Onofrio, the canespace GOON MOB came at me with FULL SPECTRUM DOMINANT attacks and I went TOO FAR with my reactions! Go bloody figures'.

Chit, even an OUTSIDER, open-minded college sports fan-dom could see the WRITING ON THE WALL regarding D'Onofrio and Golden's SUSPECT defensive schemes and ploys, and what not, in their FIRST GAME as Hurricane coaches.

ENTER that major college football POWER HOUSE Maryland squad in 2011.

By the way, the Turtles happen to only win 2 games in '11... I-AA Towson St. and U Know Who.

And after that embarrassing lost on nation telly to Maryland, Miami's ONCE PROUD defensive tradition has slowly gone A.W.O.L.

Matter of fact, the Cane's defense has gotten WORST each season since Golden and D'Onofrio's first season in Coral Gables.

Yeah, yeah the Canes don't have no talent and what not. So what!

Tell Coach Cutlieff and his Duke assistants about not having enough TALENT!!

@@@@@@

There are NUMEROUS examples of defensive coordinator's/head coaches being CHIT-CANNED last season and this season during the season.

However, Golden had the OPPORTUNE moment to force the resignation or transfer D'Onofrio to another position within the football program, at the conclusion of last season. But Golden STUBBORNLY refused to make the WISE decision.

And President Shalala and the B.ofT. and the current A.D. are in LOVE with Golden. So they as a collective body WON'T pressure Golden into doing the smart thing with Miami, Florida's current defensive coordinator.

And that is TROUBLESOME to say the least and indicates the POWERS THAT BE involved with the University of Miami, Florida AREN'T concerned with the Canes football program returning to ELITE STATUS in major college football.

Its bad feeling about gis loss but the good thing is its corectable. No d must do the right thing and resign arr lose his playcalling and his scheme. Any time you put up 30 points you should win. The most most troublesome thing is that duke ran for almost 400 yards on us. Duke is a good team but you cant give up 400 yards on the ground period.

I believe the margin of ability on these guys compared to ANY team in the NCAA is not even measurable.....

stephen morris can be just as good as winston or manzel....he throws a perfect long ball...thats a big benchmark......all he needed was the right coaching....and even with all this f...cked up stuff, he is within striking distance to toretta as the 3 rd best QB in cane history.....

Charlie Strong would be the best Golden replacement.
Organized, professional, and understands Florida.

Posted by: Canesjunkie | November 17, 2013 at 11:18 AM

@@@@

However, 50% of the CS/eoth dude's would BELLOW that Coach Strong has BAGGAGE and the President and A.D. and Board of Trustee's would say Strong is NOT Hurricane coaching material. No not the x's and o's, but the " going along, to get along " thing and what not.

All that added muscle sure nough' didn't pay DIVIDEND's against a SMALLER Duke offensive line yesterday.

Because time after time, the DORK o-linemen were blocking Miami, Florida's front 3/4 FOUR, FIVE, SIX yards off the line of scrimmage!!!

And one reason Duke could drive the Cane front D-line back, back, back, was because the linemen are taught to ENGAGE and play PATTY CAKE, PATTY CAKE.

Instead of engaging and RELEASING with swim moves, or gap shooting, or Karate hand/arm moves, etc., etc., etc.

In other words, a LIGHTER offensive linemen has an EASIER time blocking that TYPE of defensive linemen technigue.

And if said offensive linemen is CLEVER, he can SUBTLY HOLD and drive on the play, because Miami's d-linemen are playing HUGGY BEAR and what not.

Started at the bottom now we're back...started at the bottom now the whole team's back...

D'No must go!

We need to find an upcoming coach with the mindset of jeremy pruitt. A coach that is willing to adapt to his players and not the other way around.

The reason that D'Onofrio has been left with no choice but to run the 3-4 defense is he has no defensive linemen and putting another linebacker on the field who is slightly more talented than the linemen is a last ditch effort to make up for lack of talent.

If Coach Golden and Coach D'Onofrio did a public autopsy on the defense it would educate those who continue to mislead others as to the extraordinary talent deficiencies they are facing.

Obviously, they don't want to hurt the kids who are all giving their hearts and soles to the program thanks to Coach Golden's leadership, but all of those fantastic "Rudy's" will never make up for the talent of even one "Warren Sapp".

As much as some want to deny the Canes talent deficiencies the sad truth is that if an "unbiased expert" did a comparison of talent of the Canes and say, Virginia Tech the final score would be close to a shutout in favor of Tech. The same might be said of Duke as if you don't have an effective defensive line to free up your linebackers and pressure the opposing QB, you simply don't have a defense.

Unfortunately, we are suffering through almost 9 years of a deteriorating program that started with Coker, accelerated under coach Shannon and due to the NCAA charges there was no way to stop the program from further deteriorating despite the heroic and accomplished efforts of Coach Golden.

If you watched the game yesterday you know Coach D'Onofrio tried every trick, stunt, gimmick in the book to stop the run and pressure the QB, but as we saw this is a dangerous tact to be forced into due to lack of talent, because every time you guess wrong you get burned.

If you want to watch a team that has the talent, but not the coaching simply take a peek at the Florida Gators. As they have boasted for every year over the past decade, their recruiting classes are always ranked in the top 5, if not the top 3. They not only haven't faced an NCAA attack, but used Miami's troubles with the NCAA to further erode the Canes recruiting efforts.

AL GOLDEN IS THE BEST COACH IN ALLL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND HAS RECRUITED A TOP 3, 2014 CLASS FILLED WITH TALENT!!

Hey HTC,

Great memories of growing up there. Hope you are enjoying the area and the good folks there!

Enjoy your commentary and observations,

Hopin' for change at the UM, man!

The facts below are incontrovertible and the haters name calling and lies will not change the facts:

Al Golden inherited a football program in flames that had already slammed into the side of a mountain. AL GOLDEN IS BY FAR THE BEST COACH IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!

My bad for GLOATING at y'all D'Onofrio loyalists and syncophants. And U know whom yee be. But frankly, I don't care that I'm rubbing it in!!

But, prior to the season back in August in the M-H Cane blog, I TOUTED that Miami's total team defensive would be ranked in the ... NO.55-NO.64 percentile at the conclusion of the regular season.

Read it and bloody SCREECH...

Total Defense

NO. 65 Miami, Florida

And there's still two games left on the scedule for D'Onofrio to show some PROGRESS and PROCESS and what not. hUh

Yeah, yeah I never donned the pads and what not. But I still have EYES to witness the Litmus Test of whether D'Onofrio and Golden have the proper schems and ploys, which are SUITABLE for upholding a ONCE proud, Miami, Florida Hurricane defensive tradition.

Seeing that total team defense is SYNONYMOUS with scoring defense. I GUESSED that Miami, Florida would have a SCORING DEFENSE ranked in the NO. 54-NO.60 percentile range.

TEAM SCORING DEFENSE

NO. 55 Miami, Florida

Again, I SERIOUSLY don't believe the Hurricane defense would be where it's at today, IF only Golden would have done the proper thing at the conclusion of last season. hUh
