Al Golden after the Hurricanes' first bowl practice in three years. Practice No. 2 is today.

Below is exactly what Al Golden said after Saturday's first bowl practice in three years. He'll be out recruiting instead of with the Hurricanes when the bowl announcement is made at about 8:45 tonight. Golden said he regrets not being able to be with his players.

The Canes have another football practice this morning at 11. It's at Cobb Stadium on campus and open to the public. After today's practice, fans can go see the men's basketball team (5-4) take on Virginia Tech (6-3) in UM's first ACC game of the season. The hoops game is at 12:30 p.m. at BankUnited Center.

AL GOLDEN AFTER CANES' FIRST BOWL PRACTICE

"We got a lot done. We were out there for an hour 40 but it was a great tempo. We probably rested 25, 26 guys, so guys who had high play counts we rested and put the pressure on some of the younger guys to step up. I was pleased with the effort, and we’ll come out here tomorrow and get another good one and then we’ll get ready for exams.

Extra significance waiting three years for this one shot?

(Laughing) "Man, it felt great. It was unbelievable. The whole week felt great. I didn’t answer one question about the NCAA. We got a great recruiting group in here today. I didn’t get one guy on the list all week. They just took care of business. I know they’re excited about going to the postseason and growing and learning. All the young guys came out here today. You could see it. They were giving good effort. It was hot, but they gave great effort.

"These two days we’re going to take care a lot of the vets. And next weekend we’re going to get going. Youll see everybody out here starting Friday night at 5 O’Clock. It should really ramp up another couple notches because those guys are two weeks rested."

 On practice being open:

"It’s great. Obviously we’ve been waiting for the postseason and there’s really nothing to these. We’re not trying anything new or we’re not hiding anything. No trick plays or anything like that. It’s just about getting better.

"They understand. We’re grateful to the seniors. We’re going to try like heck – I think you see the attitude today. We’re going to try like heck to send them out the first 10-win team in a decade. We’re grateful for all they endured and what they went through to get us to where we are and everybody else had got to carry the torch now, everybody else  has to move forward, including the guys on the official visit.

"I don’t think I will be [with the players Sunday night for the bowl announcement] only because the new recruiting calendar has really squeezed us. It’s unfortunate. I would love to be. But it sounds like I’m going to have to be on the road because we’re dead a week from [Sunday]. I would love for them to be together."

How important are these bowl practices for young guys’ development?

"Huge. We haven’t had it. We’re going to be able to look at the film and some guys really stepped up. You guys see it. A catch here. A play there. Somebody has got their mind right for practice. A guy like Alex Gall, man, he had his mind right, we started him. He responded. I thought Taylor Gadbois is the same way. Jermaine Grace made some plays, D'Mauri Jones. It’s just exciting to see some of those guys step up, [such as] Jelani Hamilton."

How is Ladarius Gunter (neck) doing?

"He’s good. He missed some time so we wanted to practice him today. He’s fine."

Have you spent time thinking of bowl opponents?

"Not a second. This is about us getting better right now. We didn’t do anything with them all week. They lifted a little bit so we could maintain some structure. They went to school, they took care of study hall. That’s what it’s about right now. Take care of exams, control what we can control and then when we find out where we’re going we’ll get ready.

Anthony Chickillo is wearing a boot. What's wrong?

"[It's a] little toe deal. We just have to be careful. I suspect he’ll be out here Friday. Tests were negative there and he should be back soon."

I hope Chic fil A offers us. I would much rather play a SEC school. Speaking of which, I think we need to develop a end of the season rivalry with a SEC school. Like FSU/UF, S.Carolina/Clemson, UGA/GaTech and Wake/Vandy. I think LSU,Auburn and T&AM make the most sense. Go Canes!!

Nice...get recruiting....extra practices will help ,less down time. I think it will be Louisville we play in a bowl. We have a much better offense than the team they played in a bowl last year so expect a shootout if we draw them. Our D will be the deciding factor. They can get 700 yards for all I care as long as we stop them in the redzone. Hold them to field goals and we win #10 finish in the top 25 and start next spring on a good note for a change.

[]_[] a healthy Duke Johnson away from playing for a BCS bid yesterday. Not bad. []_[] on the right track. Defense has some catching up to do, but with the right running-back depth/development (Cook/Edwards) I like where the offense is going.

Williams is going to put the ball in playmakers hands and allow them to showcase their ability. May not go over the top but he will move the chains. I like his poise. If he plays fast he will be dangerous. His weapon will be tempo.

DL is the weakest position on the team followed by safety. Improve the DL and the entire team is instantly better.

Big things next season.

That extra practice will help against the teams that are not going to a bowl.

From watching Duke last night, I cannot grasp how they blew out Miami. I see the have a ton less talent. The only reason they could do that would have to be better coaching.

Al Golden must beat all the lesser teams he faces, next year. With a win, at least, against a better and more talented team. Anything else and it will continue his failure at leading Miami to top tier football success. That is grounds for termination, when true and observant fans are involved.

Al and Co have to improve the physical and intensity of the defense. FSU went to Bama and got their DC and LB'ers coach. You can see the change in their physical play, intensity and confidence of knowing what to do. With our defense we see just the opposite. Defensive line running around at the snap. LB'ers unsure of responsibilities, DB's confused with coverage, very little man to man, bad timing on blitzes and an inability to make defensive adjustment that work. Plus lets be real- we've seen enough of D'Nofrio to know he can't coach and that the players, say good things about him because they have to, don't believe in his defensive scheme. How do I know? Because Al and Co. tell us all the time when they say this like, "they have to trust the scheme and stop free lancing". People when players have no confidence in the defensive scheme, who is playing and the Defensive Coordinator, this is what they do! The only person that wants D'Nofrio at UM is Al Golden.

champCane, we lost to duke simply the same way we lost to Fsu & V-tech, the read option. It's simple, when you ask your d-linemen to basically do nothing but bull-rush the qb, that opens up nothing but running lanes, all the o-linemen have to do is lock up with our d-linemen since they know where they're going to be and read option on which hole. Teams just bring in about 3 or 4 wide-outs, spread our linebackers out wide and than just run right up the middle, instead of these morons dropping the safeties down to compensate, they have our safeties playing way back so essentially we're always playing defensively 9 vs 11, which is why we give up 500 yards games on a consistent basis.

Don't give up the big play, but we give up big yards all game long, it's an elementary defensive scheme. Ask any real d-co and the ideal defense is to be able to have db's that can play man, that way they can take the other 9 guys and wreck havoc, these morons continue to let our overweight linebackers get isolated on slot receivers who just do pivot routes and are wide open consistently, 3rd and longs against our defensive scheme are our opponents dream, every qb we play, plays with high confidence cause they know what;s going to be there.

Our d-line players have a lot of talent that's not being used, they weren't brought here to waltz with o-linemen, they were brought here to get up field and get to the qb, poor curtis porter, asked to be 325lbs this year and can't move, 3g lumbering, and yet you'll here moron's #1 & 2 try and tell us how those 2 had they're best games against duke, unbelievable.

You have analyzed this defense to the t, Calvin. Can anyone see it any differently?

What will it take to get a better coach and scheme? A blowout loss to Duke and a homecoming blowout loss to Virginia Tech? That brought more excuses from Al Golden fans, than as my Grand Mama said, "than the law allow".

I just saw Lou Holtz say that the BCS Championship will feature two SEC teams because FSU is really an SEC team because they are built like an SEC team. What? I guess they are getting ready for their beloved SEC to be demolished. Auburn plays absolutely no defense. Neither does Mizzou - and they were the two best teams in the SEC this year. I thought the SEC was all about "big boy football" and tough defenses?

FSU is built like FSU - dominant and fast defensive line, big secondary, power running, and elite WRs. They are no different than the FSU teams that dominated college football in the 90s. This ESPN love affair with the SEC has gone too far when you have analysts saying FSU is a really an SEC team, whatever that means.

Calvin, you forgot one thing, UM gets exposed on runs to the outside now because the sideline to sideline pursuit speed as a team is now about two or three steps slower than when even Cook and Davis were heavily featured as the every down linebackers.

But at least they're setting lifting records and releasing gymnasium videos while the Dukes of the world set offensive records of the wrong kind against UM on their way to blowout victories, right Ganes fans?

It's Ganes thing, they never understand.

Naw i didn't forget but i just wanted to point out the plays V-tech & duke used, but Unc, wake forest & Fsu, they all ran around the right side of the defensive line all game long and it took all day long for those runningbacks to get to the corner and we still didn't get their. eerybody just gashing us with the same plays.

Damn! My team is 4-8 and sitting home during the bowl season.

We lost to a bad JV team in our house on Senior Day. We are 4-8 and got punked by an injury docketed ans average D-2 team at home. Nothing could be more humiliating for me.

I think we ahould play Stanford and USC. Developing rivalries wkth those schools will bring back what is missing since ND.

Is Marky Mark still in Coral Gables.

defense has to find a way to play tough.... and please quit making sub mediocre teams look like offensive juggernauts

A&M might get Dino fired because they are going to put up massive points on that defense. They read option, the qb is quick and elusive, and they can complete long passes.

Dino better hope Manzel shows up with hangover.

Does anyone know if Derrick Griffin is enrolled?

This why coach moron goldie is a coward, he's trying to now manufacter the bowl game, looking for the weakest offensie opponent to try and help the other moron keep a job at the expense of UM. I would luv for us to play texas A & M, it really doesn't matter to me who we play, i could careless, we not bringing defense to any game we play unless it's Savannah St.

Bill Polian predicts 8 of 11 FSU starters on defense will be on an NFL roster. Their QB will win the Heisman and will be most probably be the #1 NFL pick when he comes out, not to mention any number of their offensive players who will also be on NFL rosters.

FSU is the #1 team in the country and are favored to win the BCS Championship because they are loaded with talent. Lou Holtz is so upset that an ACC team is about to win the National Championship he claims the Noles are really an SEC team.

The point being...Jimbo Fisher was not left with a football roster with no talent and has not been encumbered by a 3 year NCAA investigation and then prosecution designed to destroy the Noles football program as has been the case for Al Golden and his staff.

Despite inheriting a football program for the most part absent of talent, yet loaded with a toxic, losing culture that was in a terrible downward tailspin and the most destructive NCAA attack on a college football program since the SMU death penalty case Al Golden has somehow kept the Canes program alive and miraculously won the ACC Coastal Division last year, has them going to a very good bowl game this year with a fantastic 9 and 3 record and even has the nations top 3 recruiting class set to arrive in Coral Gables.

It truly is great to be a Miami Hurricane and...

AL GOLDEN IS THE BEST COACH IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!

That's not true. First off yes a and m may score on miami's d then again they put up 40 plus on bama , that team makes any d coordinator look bad, Then u have the fact that a and m's d is worse then ours. i think we can score 40 plus on them. especially if they get morris healthy and his mechanics cleaned up. So chick fil a would be great to play a and m the other game woudl be louisville and teddy bridgewater so its not like miami would be playing a horrid offense either way. and for the record i think golden would want the chick fil a bowl so if he beats a and m people can shut the hell up.

If he ain't fired now he ain't gonna be.

AG doesn't believe THEIR scheme is a problem dispite going from next to last to dead @zzlast in the acc in 'dense!

AG doesn't want 99.9% of the fan base to believe their eyes.

The defense coachs have to be changed, no progress actually 116th in nation out of 120, thats as bad as it gets, Golden needs to do something giving Dofornio another year is a huge mistake with next years schedule, cant use anymore excuses, 500 yards per game will become the normal game. Cant fix it, to young like all the other teams , injurys etc. Big Al has painted himself in a corner only way out is fire defense coachs, again Miami will finish next year 7-5 with its schedule than the blood bath will start after we lost a another year with DC.

We need to get a defense coach, that can run different defense schemes , blitz some make safety come up quicker on end runs, our defense ends are not quick. DB coach he needs to fired now, his play was terrible at best, good coachs will eat us alive.

Fla A/M is our only weak team, Nebraska, cinn Ark State strong little school, than Clemson, Louisville GT, NC, VT Duke Virginia, Pitt I believe, the rushing yards will be out of sight, our defense scheme doesnt work, ask any coach in ACC they cant wait to play us.

2013 Chick-fil-a Bowl reportedly Georgia vs. Miami

Although a 7-0 start did not translate into the year they hoped it might, the Hurricanes should be mighty satisfied with their 2013 season and with a victory in their bowl game, they’d crack double digits for the first time since 2003.

Even more encouraging is the fact that their losses came only against Florida State, eventual Coastal Division champion Duke, and an always-solid Virginia Tech team. This is the third straight season Miami has increased its win total under Al Golden.

In short, the Hurricanes are trending up. A storm is a-swirling.

With star running back Duke Johnson already lost for the season, the Hurricanes will lean heavily on quarterback Stephen Morris, who posted an 11:4 TD:INT ratio in Miami’s five games without Johnson. Dallas Crawford, working in Johnson’s place at tailback, has been effective, rushing for 232 yards (46.4 yards per game) over that span. With the month of extended bowl practice, though, there’s good reason to expect he should be prepared for this one.

On the other side of the ball, Miami is led by Denzel "The President" Perryman and his team-high 104 tackles and defensive lineman Shayon Green, who has 10.5 tackles for loss on the season.

~SB Nation

No Clemson in 2014, but we always play the Noles.

goldie would've been a good spokes person for this dis-organization during this time!

daryl gates words, playing the blame game, sounds familiar:

The media, particularly the electronic media, began giving that impression by playing that tape over and over again. And then, of course, everybody that had an opinion about what took place out there; they came in, they chimed in, and they gave their opinion; and it did look like racism. "My goodness, here is this black person who is being beaten. It looks like the Old South." That's the impression that was given, but a totally false impression, because there was nothing racist about it. No one knew what Rodney King had done beforehand to be stopped. No one realized that he was a parolee and that he was violating his parole. No one knew any of those things. All they saw was this grainy film and police officers hitting him over the head. . .

cAlvina if you are anything close to what your post stated you are split personalities.

You state above "I would luv for us to play texas A & M" then immediately you state in the same sentence "it doesn't matter to me who we play". Which is it cAlvina?

You call out Coach G, for being a coward, but you are so indecisive that you can't figure out your own thoughts.

That trend is normal for the course. Right cAlvina?

My take it does NOT matter who we play.
I love the U, the players, and that is my School so whomever is ready for a Bowl, let's go...

Your YING is flopping around out there with no direction, our YANG is ready to see the next 'Canes bowl game.

Thanks Seniors and good luck

Do you think the head coach that did not receive 1 of the 60 or so votes for coach of the year in the ACC is the best coach in college football too?

LMAO

UM's best matchup in a bowl game would be Louisville. The Canes would still give up a ton of yards, but Texas A and M, LSU or Georgia would do even more damage. LSU and Georgia would run up the middle repeatedly and crush the defense. You don't even want to see what J Football would do to the Cane defense. Something has to give with UM's defense. Some kind of change has to be made to stop the bleeding.

Canes ranked 25th in Coaches Poll!!

I AM THE WORST AND DUMBEST POSTER IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL RELATED BLOGGING I CONTINUE TO spam bot-ing this Canes blog attempting at getting a WE'RE NUMBER ONE TWENTY-FIVE, Gator chant going.

It's a spineless Gator thing, they never understand.

PS: 4 and 8...Georgia Southern....Aaron Hernandez...21-16...toothless hillbillies everywhere...last in the SEC...all Gator coaches being fired...etc., etc., etc.

It is amazing the so-called reporting being done concerning what Bowl game the Canes will play in.

Some are reporting that the Canes will play versus Georgia in the Chick Filet Bowl and others are reporting the Orlando match-up of Louisville and the Canes.

Much depends on the D-lineman being recruited next Feb; that will always define how the defense performs.

No news on Dixon?

Ron Zook get a clue buddy, Um's roster did have some guys that went on to the NFL, Vernon, Miller, Benjamin, Spence, Fortston -to name a few. The NCAA investigation while bothersome was not crippling. This program can not be built on consistent 2 and 3 star talent. Their style of play on defense is troubling, their inability to land quality defensive linemen who know they can receive playing time immediately should be a testament to how this defense is being run.

FIRE D CORCH, HE IS WORTHLESS AND DOES NOT LIKE BLACK KIDS THAT SPEAK LIKE KIDS FROM THE PROYECTS...
