Central star RB Dalvin Cook signs grant-in aid agreement with Miami, but it's not a done deal yet

Miami Central standout Dalvin Cook, ranked as the No. 2 running back in the country by 247Sports, signed a grant-in aid agreement with the Hurricanes Wednesday along with teammates Joseph Yearby and Trevor Darling.

But before you go throwing a party Hurricanes fans,  understand this doesn't mean Cook, still a University of Florida commitment, will definitely be a part of Miami's 2014 signing class along with Yearby and Darling (longtime UM verbal commitments).

All this means is UM is now obligated to honor their scholarships, unlike the scenario for a traditional recruit who offers a non-binding verbal commitment. All three players are not tied to UM and could enroll elsewhere or sign a binding letter of intent with a different school as well.

On the plus side, UM is no longer limited by NCAA regulations that restrict in-person contact with Cook. That includes phone calls and home visits.

Cook (5-11, 190) met with UM coaches earlier this week and told Miami Herald High School Sports Writer Andre Fernandez the experience was "eye-opening" because he finally got a chance to sit down and really see how strongly UM wants him.

"In person you really see what people are all about," Cook said. "I think there is definitely a strong possibility Joe and I still end up playing together at the next level."

Cook also is still strongly considering Florida State. Central coach Roland Smith said Wednesday night at practice he wouldn't be surprised if Cook also signed a financial aid agreement with the Seminoles and Gators if he hadn't already.

Central is preparing for a Class 6A state semifinal showdown this week against Daytona Beach Mainland. Yearby, who is close with Cook, was lost for the season last week and had surgery Wednesday for a broken right fibula. Yearby told The Miami Herald he expects to be ready for spring football.

All three players plan on enrolling in college in January.

He's Miami's to lose. Now go get Dixon.

The University of Miami is a great university. There will be many, many, wins here soon.

Once you know the rest happens. I've been ringing the alarm for it, here.

A.J. Highsmith

I think the removal of the NCAA shadow will pay huge dividends this year. Miami is the place to go to get on the field fast if you are a great player. These players know that.

FIRE AL GOLDEN..............

Nothing to see here did the same with fsu which is where he'll go. Dixon and Jackson are good possibilities. D line should be the major concern, kaaya probably decommits but miami needs a dual threat had too many statues throwing the ball.

Just goes to show the more ineptness by this coaching staff, no need for corn to get burn this year, just like no need to play earl moore just on special teams this year, he could've used a redshirt, not corey king sightings, threal problem is, this staff doesn't know how to recruit interior d-linemen from down here, they may have just figured it out this year. They keep bringing in guys that end up not working for them. Tha nthe guys that use to be on the verge of making plays consistently end up vanishing, how many d-linemen has this staff gone thru and wasted there careers, it's a crime really:

jeremy lewis(moved to o-line)

luther robinson(tried to move to o-line, didn't, not as much playing time)

curtis porter(dog house last year, asked to put on to much weight this year)

kelvin "i ain't going nowhere" cain(said f morons #1 & #2, doghouse, no playing time.

jalen grimble (Left)

earl moore(played as a True freshman, nowhere to be seen this year except special teams)

olsen pierre(has anyone seen em)

3g(lumbering jack, rushed weight gain)

jacoby briscoe(moved to o-line than moved on)

jake o'donnel(moved to tight-end, haven't heard from em since)

corey king(is he still here)

david gilbert(5th year senior, may have played a few snaps, must be saving him for the bowl game)

jelani hamilton(all world in highschool when healthy, here another weight gain victim and coaches don't know where to use em)

dwayne holliet(another talent wasting away on the sidelines)

dequean ivery(maybe off the team talented but may have been confused with deQuan jones and booted from the team by mistake).

And that's not all of them but when you that many guys, nobody can convince me that all of these guys can't play or don't know how to play d-line. Almost all of those guys would be successful if the right d-co & d-line coach was here, alot of speed within that group alone. And if it is the players, than who's missing on recruit this bad that they're still here cause these kids didn't give a scholarship to themselves. This is criminal!

Total gem homey,

I missed this post

Seems like it was only yesterday we warned fans not to fall for "the banana in the tail pipe" crew from the Mac. Another year down the drain. Now we got to watch Duke get drilled in the ACC championship game.

All of those fantasies about how the 3rd year of UTough would have this defense prepared. Remember "they crushed the conditioning test" LOL. I guess the coaches forgot to incorporate tackling, pass rushing technique or shedding blocks drills in UTough. The kids did their job and the staff failed to prepare them. They bought in to the UTough garbage and have no results. All of this talk about weight gain, bench press records, power lift but no mention of adding football skills. Now after all of the praise on weight gain it took four or five games for some of these clowns to see how slow the team is now. As if it doesn't go hand to hand with weight gain. *NEWSFLASH* Just because you can run the same forty time prior to gaining weight that isn't the same as your short area quickness, which is more important then a forty time.

We were in the minority but not anymore. Real Cane fans are arising. Love to see a lot of what's being posted hear now-a-days. Hold these frauds accountable and lets get a real D-coordinator in hear to play Miami style defense.

Back in May, June and July, they raved about every quote from Golden tongue's mouth. Now they are trying to question if we have more talent than Duke. Man how times have changed. LOL

No more excuses.

Preach Brother Preach

Cutcliffe was the choice of 62 of the 65 ACSMA members casting ballots. Boston College first-year coach Steve Addazio received two votes, and Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher received the other.

Where did Golden come in at in the voting? You mean to tell me he didn't get one vote for best coach in the mediocre ACC?

@ ohiocane I wish you so call fb God's would do your homework kaaya mom will be moving to Miami in January so that gator thinking of yours is out the Window and the D line should be the next major concern .

Where did Golden come in at in the voting? You mean to tell me he didn't get one vote for best coach in the mediocre ACC?

That's because a particular blogger didn't get a vote! Lol

"they may have just figured it out this year."

Posted by: Calvin | November 27, 2013 at 10:57 AM

Negative. They don't just wake up one day and 'figure' things out coaching or recruiting-wise. If they don't bite as pups, the won't bite at all.

How about that NCAA thing that ended, uhhh, a couple months ago? Ya think that allows them to snatch Valentine and Moten up. Could that be the change? How about kids ran from us until the NCAA cleared out? Nah, you'd rather believe they just figured out how to recruit guys in thier own back yard to the []_[]... Smh.

Al is a hell of a recruiter and was the day he walked into the Hect; there aren't many guys that can walk in the room and command attention with thier presence. Meet the guy and you'll see. He goes in living-rooms and will turn a lot of these kids. Get rid of the NCAA and this is what you get. Local kids staying home.

As far as the kids let go, I wish them luck, but show me when they go in to blow it up elsewhere. Furthermore, why don't you check the busts in other programs. This happens all over the country and twice as much in Gainesville. How many bomb classes they had before they go 4-8?

And answer me this... Randy doesn't recruit Devonta Freeman who wanted to be a Cane. Golden comes and tries but it's too late. Freeman goes to FSU and busts our ass on the National tele. Switch him to our team and see if the outcome doesn't change, eh? What's say?

Ron Zook how can golden be the best coach in ALL of college football yet he won't win national coach of the year and won't even be the coach of the year in the acc? Instead of cut and pasting like a spam bot how can you explain that?

Posted by: Next Man[]_[]p

So you saying if we had Freeman we beat FSU. LOL

I don't think you are that crazy.

The only thing that would happen is some other back would run for his career high again No D's scheme.

If we had freeman unfortunately wilder would have been flexing more

That's right! Anybody but a kid from our own back yard. Wilder can't do what that kid did. He bludgeoned us.. And I guarantee we beat VT and Duke. If we have Frreman and Duke, likely both healthy today and we practicing against FSU. The D would be better because we play more ball control. That kid beat us by himself. What you talking bout?

They rode that kid in a way we can't ride Duke.

If Cook and Gray signs, I would put them at Safety as freshmen. Miami needs more play-makers in the secondary. I would move Bush down to weakside LB, put #52 in the middle, and Grace on the strong side LB. Cook will not get enough snaps as a RB and why waste his talents on special teams. Trayvone wants to play QB, but he can help the U more on defense next year. If the U change its offensive scheme and mirrors Oregon or Baylor...then Gray would be an excellent QB. With the WRs and RB depth, I would welcome a change in the offensive system. Williams will have a field day running a spread offense, because he is very accurate with underneath throws. If the defense spread out, Duke will have open lanes to make big plays. Duke, Crawford, Yearby, and Powell are the same type of backs. OC, please put them in space...with short passes and screens. Artie Burns and Howard are the CBs! Tyriq and Muhammand are the DEs...with Thomas and Harris as the freshman backups. Get back to speed...because it is very hard to block speed all night.

Coach Golden, I am please with your selection of talent, but get the right coaches to effectively use these play-makers on defense and offense. We don't have a pro style QB...play to the strengths of your players.

Yeah kinda like Amari Cooper not being offered b/c he didn't attend camp golden

Posted by: RichmondHeightsCane | December 04, 2013 at 09:54 PM

Cook is Willis 2.0. Play him as a Fresher and redshirt Yearby so he can get bigger. We need bigger backs to run our pro-style, cuz that's what we do. We have a 6'3" 220lb S named Darrion Owens committed from Orange Park, FL. Hopefully he bites. Bush is too small to play LB; his legs are too skinny and doesn't quite have the height or frame to carry the necessary weight. Figs is gonna be our next great LB. DZP may walk, but I hope he doesn't. I'm not concerned about LB, I'm more concerned about DL and S in that order.

need LB's too don't forget

looks familiar..

No. 287 Darrion Owens (Orange Park, Fla./Oakleaf), OLB
The 6-3, 220-pound Owens has transitioned from safety to outside linebacker as a senior without skipping a beat. Long, rangy and with edge-rush ability, the Miami commit is a top senior riser.

Ron Zook how can golden be the best coach in ALL of college football yet he won't win national coach of the year and won't even be the coach of the year in the acc? Instead of cut and pasting like a spam bot how can you explain that?

Posted by: jsy | December 04, 2013 at 09:19 PM

Al did that at Temple.

Y'all act like Miami hasn't been held back the last 2-3 years with this investigation and negative recruiting...or the prior 7 with poor coaching/recruiting.. C'mon man. It takes time to build a champion and we just came out of the woods.

Name a leader on defense that's a first rounder...

I wouldn't take any RB over Duke. Duuuuuke!

The instant ANYTHING positive is posted about the Canes/Al Golden the one or two Gator nimrods with the numerous screen names start posting their nonsense that has been debunked by not only the Canes fans on this blog, but by numerous experts on the game of college football:

"Ask just about anyone who has played football at the “U” and they will all explain how “void of talent” this program was when Golden arrived. This program had deteriorated to the point that the once flowing pipeline to the NFL had dried up."

"The Hurricanes were “supposed” to win the Coastal Division and reach the ACC title game this year—not because talent, depth and experience proved so, but simply because folks have grown tired of waiting and the drought has gone on long enough."

"For those who continue beating the drum that Miami “should” be back, the question remains, based on what?"

"Coker was tossed the keys to the hot rod he eventually totaled and Shannon set it on fire it. Golden was then given a can of Bondo and a running clock regarding getting it race-worthy again—and not enough folks see that as unfair."

"Golden hustled to save the 2011 recruiting class—which had only four verbal commits when Shannon was let go the previous December. By February, 19 kids joined the Miami program, though the class reeked of last-ditch effort as a new leader had less than two months to sell, close and deliver."

"Ryan Hill never lived up to the hype on the field, but soon as his playing days were over, called it like it was in eye-opening fashion. Hill went on to explain that Golden had inherited “a massive problem” regarding a culture of insubordination and a bunch of pot-smokers more interested in a sideline snowball fight, than the fact that Notre Dame was pummeling Miami in a mid-tier bowl game. Two months after Hill’s revelation, Charles Robinson and Yahoo! Sports dropped an atom bomb and began spinning jailhouse tales from a jaded Ponzi-schemer intent on destroying the Hurricanes’ football program. Hello NCAA investigation. Somewhere in those two-plus years that dark cloud hovered over “The U”, this fan base forgot how scared-straight it was in back in August 2011 when the news was first delivered."

Whether Nevin Shaprio was speaking truth or falsities, perception was reality, the media was screaming “death penalty” and a program damn-near life support looked like it was falling in the abyss. Forget ultimate success, BACK THEN MOST OF US WERE HOPING UM WOULD MERELY SURVIVE!

From begging and pleading two years ago that Miami would live to see another day, to a sense of entitlement that these Hurricanes should again be a contender—just like that, with little attention paid to the past half-decade of disaster and mediocrity. How soon we forget."

This impatience, know-it-all approach and frustration feels a whole lot like fifteen years ago, when Pell Grant fraud rocked this program and frustration was also at an all-time high."

Do not feed the trolls.

Just enjoy the progress that UM is making. Go read the excellent blog post today about Miami on the ESPN ACC blog: http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/64242/evaluating-miamis-season-not-so-simple

tl;dr Miami made progress this season but fell short of expectations

Welcome to all new Canes, whomever they may be. Thy signed on NOT because of who we WERE, but What UM IS: one of the most respected institutions in the country, not just a football factory for no achievers.
Still, the U has produced dozens more great college and NFL players than any other school in this state.
Our new generation Canes will now take their place along side our past outstanding players.

Outstanding News!!!
Who cares about the MC Computers Bowl.
Recruit, Recruit, Recruit.
Sick and tired of playing second fiddle to FSU and UF
Strong Hurricane force winds are blowing!!!

No More Excuses!!!

It all depends on how good our next QB is. Morris had a cannon arm but could not make the right throw at the right time.

totally correct calvin.......it goes right back to this list as well......

the degree of UM's physicality vs ANY top ten team player is marginal...it always is......the only thing that separates winning is coaching and conditioning....

it will not matter who UM gets in here.....the staff has to be replaced, that's the answer....after 3 years any moron can see it aint working......the alternative is ohio state.....

2011 ohio state:

6-7 record and 3-5 conference......

2012/2013: 24-0 and 10-0 conference and playing for national championship....

who does that happen?.....you think that is luck? Ohio state didn't mess around with BS coaching search....they went for the BEST.....

UM pulled the pin too quick.....didn't allow enough time to search for shannon replacement....then freaked out and put UM football in a bad position with goldens contract extension vs his agent......

AMATEUR HOUR AT ITS FINEST.....golden is totally controlling this process....that's why he is shoving dnofrio up out ass's.....he knows that blake/shalala wont buck him......

here is new slogan to stitch in the collars of players...."loyalty trumps results"

In reply to Next Man []_[]p aka Mahoney-Pearson | December 04, 2013 at 10:12 PM

You're right about DL, but I'd be concerned about LB's. If we don't get better athletes at that position, we'll be in the same boat next year and I'll be jumping ship.
Figeroa and Perryman (if he's still in school) are good enough, but not enough. Nobody wins championships without a Defense. Can't be done. Can't bear to watch another season where our Defense is not a defense. Hard to stay emotionally-involved without hope.

a complete fraud....golden/dnofrio are the worst

Just amazes me the WEIRD fascination Gallo and Calvin (who're probably the same person) and HTC also probably the same person, and others have with Miami. I mean you whacko's stay up to the wee hours posting negative BS about the U, and then wake up in the morning and resume posting like it's an obsession or something. I mean seriously, you guys are certifiably F'ed. Also you Gator fans who sneak on here by changing your wittle names, YOU GUYS REALLY STINK, LMAO!!!!!

Now back to football. Let's have good practices guys, and get ready for L'ville. It's gonna be tough, and we're going to have to put PRESSURE on their QB. So DNO for the love of God get the D ready, and start working on some blitz packages.

I agree Calvin & Gallo are sports morons. Look up moron in the dictionary and there they are! Oh Calvin back on the I hate all non black head coaches gig! Your boy RS did a great job as a POSITION coach with Arkansas. His mental level!!!!!

Posted by: Jim Gallo | December 05, 2013 at 08:10 AM

No, your LIST is a complete fraud. I have already disproven each and every one of the items on your previous list, and now you are claiming that list of players should have been national champions?

Straw man claim by a gatr in disguise, just to make Canes fans look overconfident. Weak effort from the cut and paste gatr.

Five and Gary, really though, have you guys ever seen anyone so obsessed with negative posting on this blog? I mean is it this way on the Gator or Noles blog? I don't ever go to them, so I don't know.

oops...forgot teddy bridgewater.....if big name coach was shannon replacement...he would have stayed committed to UM.....

but possibly will see teddy vs morris......cant wait for the golden excuses after teddy bridgewater tears UM defense up in pieces.....

Full credit to "Football" and "Sunny Dee", back when I was saying we should not waste our time on Cook, they pushed that we should.

Five Titles, we need Dalvin Cook in this class. He seemed to have really developed this year. I don't know where I read this, but it is one of the websites.

Posted by: Football | October 24, 2013 at 04:40 PM

I'd like to see the Canes make a huge push for Cook. I think he has the potential to flip to join his teammate, especially in light of the Gator's offensive troubles. I also think Pease will be fired at the end of the season. I agree they should go after Lane and Clark too. I think these players were all influenced by the looming sanctions.

Posted by: Sunny Dee | October 24, 2013 at 04:44 PM

Less than two months later, their hopes came true.

so lets see.....2010 ohio state gets 12 wins vacated.....loses jim tressel HC.....the program is in complete shambles, then hires a HC with NO HEAD COACHING EXPERIANCE.....

then the team goes 6-7 and 3-5 conference....then urban meyer comes in and goes 24-0.....but UM had more "TMZ".....lol

al golden is a loser coach....and here is the proof...

Hmmm let's see in 2010, you were an IDIOT, and then came 2011, and nothing changed. So we can only hope in 2012 you would, but again nope still the same.

So here we are at the end of 2013 at 2014's doorstep and sadly yes, you're STILL an IDIOT!!!!

Funny thing about him making that move to Miami, SUDDENLY the gatr folks are claiming he isn't that big a deal.

"Not all is lost for Florida's 2014 class, even if Cook does flip. Lane, a talented wide receiver from Homestead, still seems pretty solid to his commitment to UF, as does the majority of the class, with the exception of J.C. Jackson, who's been on many trips to Miami in recent months. And though Cook is a rare breed of athlete, with electrifying speed and the ability to get up field in a hurry, it's possible he will become merely an exellent niche player."

When he was a gatr though, THIS was what they had to say:

"But it doesn't take a great recruiting eye to see that Cook's speed and agility are phenomenal, and it doesn't take a great mind for analysis to project Cook as the speedy complement to Kelvin Taylor's workhorse game in 2014 and 2015. Cook's got the potential to score six points from anywhere on the field, something that Florida's running game lacked in 2012 after the departures of Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey and something that it will lack this year, with Matt Jones and Taylor more likely to break off multiple withering 15-yard runs on a drive than a 75-yard scamper.

Cook isn't fragile like Demps and Rainey were, though, and, despite being 5'11" and 190ish pounds already, could add more steel to his already impressive frame."

Sooo, it looks like we can expect some badmouthing of Cook now that he has upgraded to the U.

Wow this team has had terrible coaching, for the past three years. Delusional fans are making a kid from Orange Park, Fl into a defensive savior. The true talent in Jacksonville has been on it's Northside. Since when Jacksonville Northwestern was a Senior and Junior High School.

This staff cannot get the best out of these kids. No matter what side of town they are from. Even The Herald has a story of talent that succeeds when away from Al Golden.

Olivier Vernon stealing spotlight from Cam Wake as Miami Dolphins’ sack master

American High and UM alum Olivier Vernon was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week and is tied for fifth in the league in sacks.

OSU did not hire a HC, they had an interim (you know, like Orgeron at USC), and they lost alot of players that jumped rather than be suspended.

But then, you love lying on here anyway....

Come on Champ, Golden only had him for a year, as he left his junior yr. He had a terrible freshmen yr, a so so soph yr, and a terrible jr. yr, so let that go. He is another of RS guys who is blossoming in the NFL, but not so much in college.

Gallo please don't use Ohio State as an example of anything. They have one of the easiest schedules year after
year. They play 2-3 teams worth a crap. That might be pushing it based on past few years. Bottom line Miami improved this year. They now have no sanctions other than the few scholarships lost. Lets give this team a chance to recruit even higher ranked players now that we have no issues that players worry about. This coaching staff has not
Had a year yet without some sort of legal problems. How many recruits do we not even know about who went elsewhere that didn't say why? Lets back the drama train up and let this school get the players needed for depth and to make plays. Then we can give A HONEST JUDGEMENT OF HOW THIS STAFF IS DOING!!

My god, all I've been hearing is this sux and that sux and he sux. this team has the chance to have A 10 WIN SEASON!! I don't care what kind of schedule they played, give the players (and the coaches) some freaking credit. This program was on life support in every aspect, from recruiting, to talent, to conditioning, etc. let me point out some programs that DONT Have the chance to win 10: Georgia, Texas, k state, t a&am, vt, nd, gt, michigan, Nebraska, fla, etc. the only thing the gallo list does is validate what golden is doing. To have that much talent depart and be on the brink of 10 wins, he should get a gd medal! Nobody is saying this team doesn't have major flaws, but gawd almighty they had to hit the reset button in the worst way imaginable. Give them a break and chance to start from scratch.

Another day, another spin doctor job in full Chinese fire drill mode for Blake James' and Chris Freet's little spam bots of Ganes 'fans.' Hilarious.

As usual, Alverage woke up today insistent on implementing the same loser game plan and defensive scheme for the bowl game as he has for the last 36 games at UM. So Miami just lost the bowl game.

It won't be close either like Shannon's was late in Orlando on the worst field in bowl history and in the 50's in Florida. Sorry Ganes fans, the spigot didn't have a last squirt to get you wet with before the new year.

This blog post is the definition of non-news. It's about the letter of intent, not unlimited Alverage contact along with unlimited Jimbo and soon to be unlimited Will contact as well.

It's a Ganes thing, you never understand.

Hurricane fans like myself though are just counting down the day until it's 'freelancing' by the defense in full revolt. They've already lost the locker room yet again on the defensive side of the ball, so the timer is just about to go off and the revolution will always be televised. Just look for the lack of only bull rushing from the defense, then you know the revolt is in full force and all its glory.

Poor name-changing fellow, you are now claiming we are getting paid by the school to respond positively to a positive article in the Herald? After the disgusting comments you made on here for the past five years? Does that mean you were being paid by Foley and his minions?

As for your claim that this is non-news, you KNOW that you would be o here crowing about your gatrs if it had been Yearby that had flipped to your gatrs. In fact, Yearby would have been added to your Fake Gallo list along with Sony Michel.

Instead, you now have to badmouth the move, badmouth the folks that see it as a positive move, and badmouth the team that MADE that move.

4-8, nothing to say about your team, so you are reduced to being a fake Canes fan since they are 5 wins and two titles better.

How sad for you. Go back to your blog, they need your help over there, I am sure.

lmao, so anybody who doesn't believe in Goldilocks is a "name changing, Gator fan?" Do you know the amount of effort that would take to come up with a different alias. Please GTFOH with that nonsense. Just except the fact that not everybody is a Goldilocks fan. If you can't stand criticism of Goldilocks and his shower buddy, well that sound like a personal problem.

To some of us, there is something that doesn't feel right, again if you don't like that, ah well.

We play for NC here, have been since the days I attended West Lab Elementary, and I don't think Goldilocks is teh guy to take us to that next level. Kind of like that old Ohio State coach who could never beat Michigan, Goildilocks doesn't seem to have what it takes to get over the hump. That's my opinion and agian if you don't like it, well that's your problem.
