HURRICANES BASEBALL UPDATE

The University of Miami baseball team checked in at No. 13 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper annual preseason poll released Friday, marking the team’s best preseason ranking from the publication since 2010.

The Hurricanes return a number of key contributors from a team that finished 37-25 overall and earned the program’s college baseball-record 41st consecutive NCAA tournament berth in 2013. The Canes have not missed the postseason since 1972, marking the longest active postseason streak of any Division I program nationwide.

Miami will return its entire starting rotation in 2014, including Louisville Slugger All-American lefthander Bryan Radziewski and USA Baseball Collegiate National Team member Chris Diaz. The duo combined to make 30 starts this past season, and both finished among the top three in the ACC in earned run average.

Both Radziewski (29th round, St. Louis Cardinals) and senior righthander Javi Salas (38th round, Minnesota Twins) decided to return to campus after being selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, while Freshman All-America David Thompson (.286, six home runs, 46 RBI) will help anchor a Miami lineup that returns seven starters from a year ago.

Joining the returning nucleus is a recruiting class ranked among the best nationwide. The group was rated No. 4 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 6 by Baseball America – its highest ranking from the publication since 2006. The Hurricanes have had classes ranked among the top 10 by both publications in back-to-back seasons.

Miami is one of six teams from the ACC ranked in the top 25 of the poll, joining Florida State, NC State, North Carolina, Virginia and Clemson.

Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross wants a change to the Atlantic Coast Conference's current eight-game league schedule and league officials will discuss the possibility during meetings in late January.

Gross raised the possibility in email to the league's athletic directors and commissioner John Swofford. The email was obtained by The Associated Press through a public records request and it calls for a discussion on the subject due to the large time gap between road games involving cross-division teams.

Annual rivalry games such as Florida State-Miami could be at risk if the ACC goes to a nine-game model in which the five teams left off a team's schedule one year must be on it the ensuing season.

The Syracuse AD contends that certain programs are at a disadvantage when the schedule keeps them from regularly playing in major markets such as Boston, Atlanta and Miami.

One of Gross' suggestion is to have a nine-game conference schedule. The five conference teams that are left off one year must be on the schedule the following season.

That would likely eliminate some of the yearly rivalry games like Florida State-Miami.

"There are some playing-partner scheduling that simply don't need to be maintained," Gross wrote. "In fact I believe it would be in the best interest to prioritize playing multiple members of the conference over having a playing partner.

"I do understand creating rivalry inventory; however, it may be better to be more creative with the rivalry concept annually than to force them over the long term."

North Carolina State athletic director Deborah Yow responded to Gross' email and confirmed that the topic will be placed on the agenda. She declined to elaborate on the subject when contacted by the AP.

Gross also declined to go into detail about the email, saying in a text, "It would be inappropriate for me to comment on working group conference items."

The eight-game format dictates that each team plays its entire division every year. There is also one standing game against an opponent from the opposite division. For example, Florida State plays Miami every year, as do North Carolina State and North Carolina, and Duke and Wake Forest. Each team also rotates through programs from the opposite division both home and away.

So Syracuse played Georgia Tech in Atlanta this season, but the Orange won't return for that game until 2027 at the earliest. Gross said this limits the exposure of teams in certain major markets.

Gross also believes there is also an effect on recruiting. He used Miami, known as a hotbed for talent, as an example. Teams from the Atlantic Division, except Florida State, have large gaps between games in Miami.

"The thought of a student-athlete returning to his home area to play in front of his family is minimized in one division and maximized in the other," Gross wrote.

Gross did have a section of the email labeled "Final Thoughts" that stated, "If we played everyone in the league equally our schedules would be much more robust giving our fans diverse schedules annually. Also our student-athletes would get exposures in all markets of the conference. Lastly we could maximize our television inventory by offering multiple and fresh matchups."

It is about time to get back to Miami wins over everyone.

Who will we have to develop Miami into that team? I have seen Al Golden fail at it. Who are the top replacements for Miami next year?

Syracuse, if you didn't like the setup, you could have stayed in the Big East. Screwing around with decades old rivalries just be cause you are a newb with an attitude is the wrong approach to take.

As for the murder joking ID stealing coward, it looks like this is two articles in a row that Manny and Susan have put out that SPECIFICALLY called out a complete moron.

Miami is ranked 13th, best preseason ranking since 2010, with 41 straight years invited to the tournament, DESPITE your sick claims of the opposite.

C'mon, coward, at least admit when you are wrong, which is almost daily. Nah, you will just change IDs again and then claim you are never wrong. Disgusting how you figure that nobody would figure out that you are a sick liar and a coward in hiding.

Posted by: ChampCane | December 20, 2013 at 03:38 PM

You already see Al Golden fail at it? Man you must be super clairvoyant. Who is going to be the next president of the US?

Football,

Champcane is a clueless agitator with an IQ of a 300 day ole peanut. If his paper thin lips are moving he's lying and complaining. He's the Grinch who would love to steal Christmas and the great success the Canes had this year and will have in the coming years under the leadership of the greatest football coach in college football, Al Golden!!

ND need to be fully committed to football...not part-time. I understand money is the main issue, but it is not fair to the other teams in the conference. How come they are full time in the other sports? How can they play for a conference championship, if they only play 5-6 games? Nevertheless, ND need to be in the same conference with OSU, MSU, U of M etc. I noticed when they have two of the ACC good football teams...they are hosting the games. It is amazing how ND always control their schedule, and the voters always place them in the top 5, if they have not loss a game. Have the voters recalled the Alabama beat down last year?

Basically, I am just saying that ND need to be in the coastal or atlantic...whereby they must play Miami and VT or Clemson and FSU the same year. Get out of here with this handpicked schedule, because ND is giving the ACC big dollars. Buying a championship and the NCAA will allow...WOW!

So Notre Dame is playing BC in Fenway Park. The Pinstripe Bowl is being played in Yankee Stadium. Why can't UM play in Marlins Stadium? The location is perfect. There would be no more heat/sun problems since the dome could be closed. Seating could be expanded for football, and it would be FULL every game!
Do you think recruiting would improve?

Raymond,

Only ND get to determine what is best for its football team and fans! Looking at their schedule the first year, they only really have one away game in the ACC. I see a lot of neutral sites, and I wonder how much money the ADs agreed to their demands. The U played ND in Chicago in 2012, but still must go to ND for the first game. I concur with a smaller stadium, if the so-called fans will not attend the other games at SL.

btw- how's that basketball team, that plays in front of hundreds in a JUCO gym doing ? over/under 3 acc wins ? NIT first round road bow-out coming... That is, if []_[] even make the NIT. 12-17 coming soon !

I guess hoops is the only thing he's got left...

29-30...nice.

Until another team wins it, we are still the ACC regular season champs and tournament champs. End of conversation.

Our men's diving team has more tradition then your garbage football, baseball, basketball teams put together. Trailer Hasses or Turd ville, doesn't matter, both are garbage. Both are jealous. Always have been, always will be. Deuces!

Losses against lesser teams, everywhere Al Golden has been. That is a failure for any coach. Even Dennis Erickson was demoted, at lowly Utah, for his offense being number 79 in the nation.

You, and your kind, are failures as fans. As much as Al Golden is a failure as a coach. There is more than enough evidence that Al Golden has never defeated a better coached and more talented team, ever.

I think we are destined to go back there. The port locale for the new soccer stadium is intriguing as well, but Marlins stadium has that sentimental value. The seating would be a bit awkward, but if they got seats close to the field it would beat out sunlife for sure. Not sure what the capacity would be. If I'm Shalala, an avid soccer fan, I'd join the lobby for a stadium downtown where the arena was, wynwood or the port. Bring the canes back within metro distance from campus.

Blah, blah, blah...whine, whine, whine...boo-hoo...boo-hoo...boo-hoo...dumb...dumb...and dumber!!

Never has someone with so little to offer had so much to say.

Listen Doris...your lies and weasel comments will never deter the great Al Golden from taking the Canes back to championship football...you are the proverbial infected pimple on an elephants arse.

I have told you before, and I'll say it again. Ron you add absolutely nothing to this blog. Your post are not respected by anyone.

Temple was kicked out of D1 and he, as the 2nd youngest coach in the nation, took them to 9-3. Which lesser teams did he lose to at Temple? They were the lesser team every time they played.

Like the penn disgrace morons, this guy has no clue about the Miami/Fsu game, nobody's going to syracuse no-way unless they're rejected by one of thee schools, and the point is a mute point anyway because what can he say about the gaytors, they're still going to have a recruiting advantage even though they're not in the conference.

What golden did at temple was simply amazing. They went 1-10 the year before he took over, He had only 50 scholorships to give out his first year total for his team, They slowly increased that but never was he allowed to have the full 85 limit till his final year at temple, They had to build a morobund franchise in a city that got very few fans. Coach d who everyone wants to hate on got temple to have a top 30 defense year in year out while there despite inferior talent. If u really want to know what coach d can teach on defense. Ask muhammed wilkerson a 2 star who became a star under coach d at temple and is now tearing up the nfl due to what coach d taught him.

Florida and Florida State will play in doubleheader at 20th annual Orange Bowl Classic on Saturday.

South Florida is not necessarily known for college basketball, but, for a few hours Saturday, the Dade-Broward area will lead the nation with three games involving ranked teams.

Two of those teams — No. 16 Florida and No. 22 Massachusetts — will be playing in the 20th annual Orange Bowl Classic at BB&T Center in Sunrise. Florida plays Fresno State at 4:30 p.m. UMass plays Florida State in the first game of the doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m.

The third game involving a ranked team is No. 6 Louisville at FIU.

These cane fans have been followers their entire lives. They were led around by Clappy Coker, then Capt. Cl[]_[]less Shannon and now Sheep hearder Goldilocks with his ewe staff in hand indoctrinating terms like, "it's part of the process, trust in the process", "we're getting better and we are getting better", "u tough will payoff", "many of these project recruits may not be rated, but they have great character and (Temple)potential." And then they follow like the pea-brained Baaaaahhhh Baaaaaahhhhh sheep they are never questioning the ACCOUTABILITY of these coaches, after STILL getting their AZZZES KICKED all over the field 3 times in year 3 with SUCH GREAT TALENT !!! Never once have any of these hypnotised homers been independent free thinkers that are able to actually see things for what they are, instead for what they continue to hope and pray for OVER a DECADE now !

yesssss. what you say is very important.

Lol ,this just in....ufelony is going bowling this year. Alachua county has agreed to let all uf football players bowl for free at all participating bowling alleys until the end of bowl season.

Where is the return home game for Miami after playing Notre Dame in Chicago. It should at least be played in Orlando or Tampa. We are scheduled to play them in South Bend in 2016. Why are we always letting ND get whatever they want.

This "canetrash" troll is really a sad person.

Hope things improve for him sometime.

Temple was kicked out of D1 and he, as the 2nd youngest coach in the nation, took them to 9-3. Which lesser teams did he lose to at Temple? They were the lesser team every time they played.

Posted by: Next Man[]_[]p | December 20, 2013 at 10:42 PM

Temple played in the worst conference in college football. Defeating two service academies and MAC teams is not an accomplishment. Even then there was a loss to a lesser, lower division, team in Villanova. But everyone he beat was a lesser team.

What golden did at temple was simply amazing.

Posted by: mainecane | December 20, 2013 at 11:37 PM

The most amazing thing is that Al Golden not only got the Miami job, but he is the most highly paid coach ever. His great pay, does not equate to superior coaching skills.

There was not a pattern of winning against better coached and more talented teams, at Temple, nor is it Miami. There is no other way to state that fact.

I hope the baseball team will be relevant this season. It's nice to see them play here in Duhland (deland) against Stetson. Stetson is a small private school, but Morris better not take them for granted, they have an experienced coach who can beat some really good teams at times.
As far as the FSU rivalry, it seems traditions are out the window for big conferences and dollars, so it would only figure. Scheduling a non conf. opponent in years we don't play them will be crucial, but could be a lot of fun also. Playing different teams is good sometimes. I guess that's why the Louisville bowl matchup is disappointing. Go Canes

I WARNED & TOLD []_[] TO STAY AWAY AND KEEP []_[]R DEL[]_[]SION IN CHECK, []_[] DIDN'T, NOW []_[] WILL SUFFER THE CONSTANT BEATDOWN CONSEQUENCES OF []_[]R ACTIONS !!! IT WILL NEVER END ! ALL []_[] HAVE DONE IS AWAKEN A SLEEPING GIANT AND MY ARMY FROM []_[]R INCESSANT DEL[]_[]SIONAL WAYS & WE WILL ATTACK, HAMMER AND DESTROY []_[] MORNING, NOON, NIGHT, WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER AND FALL WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE []_[]NTIL []_[] ARE EXTINCT AND GONE !!!

[]_[] PREPARE FOR THE SOLDY N COMPANY NEVER-ENDING BOMBARDMENT BLITZKRIEG []_[] DECADE IN DENIAL CL[]_[]CKS!!!

u only have urselves to blame ...

And to Mr. Zook, I have to agree somewhat with champ, until Golden shows he can make UM relevant, I'm not sure he is the coach for Miami. Losing to teams this year we SHOULD have beaten, VT and Duke, leaves doubt in canes fans minds. Duke had a great year, but not equal to our talent, and VT struggled against everyone on offense but Miami. That is disappointing, but with the new kids coming in, we will see if he can develop them. -Go Canes

until we are extinct and gone, huh? lol. okay. your one man blog crusade will surely destroy the university athletics program, nay, the entire university! an army, huh? well, the all caps and cretive emoticon []_[] is devastating, for sure. do you actually take the time to type in that u thingy everytime, or did you figure out a macro for that? wither way, it's flattering that you spend so much of your energy taking on this blog. kudos - that means good job.

Does this mean Notre Dame won't be playing on the road in 2017 against UM??? I thought this was previously negotiated as part of the 3-game series beginning with last year's game at Soldier Field.

Donned....U have been here the last 10 years why should we prepare now?lol.

Raymond and others,

We NEED a stadium change! Something smaller where Canes energy can build and people feel part of something positive. Something closer to campus, or more centralized, if we can't find an ideal location.

A CHANGE OF VENUE WILL HELP THE PROGRAM. ANYTHING THAT COMES CLOSE TO THE ORANGE BOWL VIBE WORKS. SOMETHING ON/NEAR UM IS THE BEST ALTERNATIVE. THERE'S GOT TO BE A WAY!

Go Canes!

Calvin, as a new year's project, try to learn the difference between moot and mute. When you do, pls become mute. What an idiot.

[]_[]F won 4 games...4 games!!!!!

[]_[]F lost to Georgia Southern a division 8 team at home!!!!!!

[]_[]F didn't even qualify for a bowl game!!!!!!

[]_[]F lost 8 games...8 games!!!!

[]_[]F is the worst team in ALL of college football!!!!

Lol chumpcane....are u saying temple, the worst team in football didnt beat better teams? If they were the worst team, then they could have only beat better teams. 1+1=2. And as far as signature wins at UM against better teams, we beat uf handily. Golden and do outcoached muschump with a healthy team. Lol,yall keep tryin and we keep provin
