However, Randy Shannon also had an extension.

Posted by: Time to Move On from Al Golden | December 31, 2013 at 03:58 PM

The raise was given after he won 9 games. Not before he won absolutely nothing, as Al Golden did.

You are very similar to Miami's administration and especially Kirby Hocutt. Hocutt was behind undermining Randy Shannon as the head coach. Along with, possible, contributing the most to the NCAA investigation.

While the extension for winning, that Randy Shannon received, was significantly less than what Al Golden started with.

Miami's administration then did not want to honor their contractual agreement with Randy Shannon, for his significantly lesser pay. That is very telling of what the thought process is for this university.

Then they fought against paying a proven and committed Miami Hurricane. But the university gave money away, like it was free, to a coach that is attempting to model the team after another failed university.

j.Gallo, just signed in and read some of the comments. I disagree with the fact about getting a quality DC. Imagine some young guy getting it done at a univ., and sees the opportunity here. Talk about in 2 years, if he can coach,(and Golden will let him), he could make his resume' look pretty good. Maybe we don't have Bama talent, but we don't have 116 ranking talent either. I have always wondered about some of your posts, you were pretty spot on before a lot of us. Maybe because we wanted to believe, it's been so long. I don't agree with all, but thanks for caring.

Champ your last two paragraphs killed it.

Thanks for the thought, HTC.

There are a lot of fans that want these young men to succeed. Miami Hurricanes' football is the foundation, you, Calvin, and so many others are in support of.

.......and then there are those who care more about a coach then the actual program itself, friggin outsiders

dbc, If you read what I ever write here you'd know I think our performance was very mediocre. I think DNo had a shot and should be replaced. I doubt he will be. I know Golden isn't going anywhere.

"jim" is a pain in the ass. He pretends to be an insider to give some cred to his generally erroneous predictions and his inane lists of the departed, some of whom are actually still here playing. His objective is to cause trouble, not improve the Canes.

Sure Tubby, the ole they wronged RS argument. He was awful as an HC and fired. Easy call.

Is it football season yet, If it make U feel better, I'm from and reside in Cleveland, Ohio--yea the place of "the fumble", "the shot", "the Decision", Jose Mesa's World Series meltdown, and the marketing, fiscally damaging, social and fan alienating philosophy behind the firing of Rob Chudzinski just to bring in another up and coming coach just like him??? Who would want to coach the Browns now???

I'm proof that a person from outside the 305, can understand our essence, plus love and support our team's culture!

As a 9 year kid, I became a Canes fan after mistakenly turning to a game vs Notre Dame at the OB and watching Tiger Clark go off despite the odds and medias obvious bias against Us (Musberger specifically). The culture and playing style of "Us Against the World", "Take No Prisoners", and the "Last will finish first" endeared me to the Canes in a house that only knew UM to be The University of Michigan.

Watching Arizona wipe out BC, with 54 seconds left, the Eagles had the ball but were down 42 - 17.

The DC for UA crossed the sideline and was yelling encouragement to his defense, even though UA had the game won. The guy had the fire. Unfortunately, BC scored a few plays later, and, under Addazio, will never be a quitter team.

Champ and HTC, agreed, the program is the thing. But the coaches drive its health and success. There are string pullers in the background, the AD, the Board, the Pesident. When UM wins, donations go up, especially from alumni who are prouder of their school.

I don't know if there is true support to win from the power players. Al Golden is a good spokesman for the U. He is a class act and has integrity. In that regard, he is acceptable to the powers that be and represents UM well. Why consider change?

But coaching that does not have Miami competing hurts the program and the university's rep as well. We need winning leadership at the coaching level.

If you have a defense that gives up 500 yards (!!!) for several games, and the DC does not get canned, then you have poor coaching leadership, and maybe a lack of desire among the university leaders as well...a bad combo, now and into the future.

Sure Tubby, the ole they wronged RS argument. He was awful as an HC and fired. Easy call.

Posted by: GatorKillerCane | December 31, 2013 at 05:57 PM

"the ole they wronged RS argument", U act as if this is or ever was made an argument in print or in the media at all. Its not an old argument, its never truly even been argued lol!

Sure he was GKC, but how do U explain why he had to fight/sue for his money? I mean that was the point of the post and U ignored to address it.

Like you said being a Cane is a mentality, that mentality will never include worshiping a coach who hasn't accomplished anything, insulting the fan base that has always been this passionate, referring to the ol girl as the bowl, or insulting the rich talent base by suggesting that some Pedophile State grad is the one and only savior for Miami. I tend to agree with your post, I went away to school in the NE where I met plenty fans of Canes football, and they all said you guys are a different type of ball down there. When I refer to outsiders, it's those with a mangled history of Canes football, you know those who would defend Coker or suggest that the fans ran Butch off. These kind of putos, who need to resort to making up lies about playing for the Canes are a running joke. These kind of putos who honestly believe that there is one person switching id's make me laugh because in their delusional world the coach of the worst defense in school history is the greatest, and the only way to deflect from goldilocks' deficiencies is to tell themselves that bloggers are conspiring against goldilocks. Lmao! See ya at the bowl...... Lol

GatorKillerCane,

Fair enough. " Mediocre " is a good word, even though saying that at 9 - 4 seems weird. It was the ones that got away that really disappointed (Va Tech, Duke). At heart, we are coming from the same place. As noted, I do read your stuff and appreciate your insights.

I also appreciate Jim's knowledge and comments, especially when he is being factual in his analysis.

HTC,

As a fellow Clevelander, did you have to bring up all those screwups, man? And your reference to the other UM only reminds me of the pain when a guy from my high school (St. Joes - Desmond Howard), blew off Ohio State and went to Michigan! But he has since migrated to Miami, and gives the U a fair shake during his broadcasts. When you are from Cleveland, you look for any little sign of hope and redemption in the sports world!

And Robert Smith from Euclid High said at the beginning of the season that he thought UM was a darkhouse shot for the BCS Championship! Ah, to dream...

Happy New Year to all!

You still trying to find a parking place outside the "Bowl"??? Or, is it Burdine Stadium???

As I post this I am looking at a photo of me running out of the locker room after halftime that I keep in my office...seriously, have you found a parking space??

AL GOLDEN IS THE BEST COACH AND RECRUITER IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!

Yea dbc, its tough but I have a bittersweet love and admiration for this place. We've been thru too much together lol!

Gee tubby, I guess contractual disputes should only involve white people. They disagreed on the interpretation. Wow, how novel.

Did that dude post an article where a guy made like 6 out of 7 accurate suggestions as an attempt to discredit him? What a dope. Maybe he's suffering from CTE from his playing days in the "bowl" back in the days.

Unimaginative defense? They blitzed 6 guys at one point and, because there are no playmakers on that whole starting unit, TB picked them apart. What else would the resident coaching braintrust that infests this blog have done?
Posted by: Jim Gallo | December 30, 2013 at 10:29 AM
-------------
THE PROBLEM IS THE SET UP OF THE DEFENSE, NOT THE LACK OF PLAYMAKERS.

Please tell me what "Scheme" you would use when your players cannot play man or zone or any combination of man and zone AND your d-line applies no pressure to the best QB in the country.

Please answer this question. I want a "scheme " that will address the utter lack of playmaking talent such that it turns the below-average Miami defense into Alabama. The floor is yours.
Posted by: Jim Gallo | December 30, 2013 at 10:29 AM
I AM GLAD YOU ASKED THAT QUESTION BECAUSE FOR THREE YEARS OF MEDIOCRE FOOTBALL WITH GREAT CANE PLAYERS, GOLDIE AND D'O HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT ANY PHASE OF THE GAME.
FOR EXAMPLE, DEFENSE. 3 DOWN LINEMEN CAN NOT STOP A RUN UP THE MIDDLE WHEN THEY HAVE 6 BLOCKERS KNOCKING THEM BACK.
3 DOWN LINEMEN CAN NOT SHED THE BLOCKERS AND PREVENT AN END RUN. SO, FOR RUNS UP THE MIDDLE OR AROUND THE ENDS, THE OTHER TEAM IS GUARANTEED 5-7 YARDS GAINS ON ALL RUN PLAYS ON D'O AND GOLDIE'S BEND AND BREAK, PREVENT THE WIN "DEFENSE."

NOW, I HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR THREE YEARS. AND THE STATS SHOW THAT MIAMI STINKS ON DEFENSE BOTH FROM THE SCORE STANDPOINT AND YARDS GAINED ON THE DEFENSE. THAT IS THE PROBLEM OF D'O AND GOLDEN. THEY DO NOT KNOW FOOTBALL.

THE DEFENSE HAS TO HAVE A MINIMUM OF 4 DEFENSIVE LINEMEN IN A TRACK STANCE TO HIT THE BLOCKERS AND MAKE THE TACKLE. THE DEF. ENDS CAN NOT BE PUSHED INTO THE MIDDLE OR THEY CAN NOT STOP THE END RUN.
THIS IS ELEMENTARY FOOTBALL. THE 3 DOWN LINEMEN DEFENSE WITH LINEBACKERS 5 YARDS OFF THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE STINKS. NO REALLY COMPETENT COACH USES IT.

ON OFFENSE, GET YOUR LINEMEN IN SHAPE, MOVING THEIR FEET IN SHORT CHOPPY STEPS, NEVER HOLDING, NEVER HAVING AN ILLEGAL PROCEDURE PENALTY, IE, GET SMART PLAYERS.

GET A BIG, TOUGH FULL BACK LIKE BRATTON OR CSONKA. WHEN YOU RUN UP AGAINST SMALL FAST TEAMS LIKE LOUISVILLE, RUN THE BALL AND CRAM IT DOWN THEIR THROATS. THAT WILL OPEN UP THE PASSING GAME.

ON THE PASSING GAME, FORGET THE FLAT PASSES AND THE HAIL MARY PASSES. THOSE ARE WASTED DOWNS. THROW THE BALL OVER THE MIDDLE TO THE BIG TIGHT ENDS WHO CAN SMASH INTO THE SMALL SAFETIES. THROW SLANT PASSES IN AND OUT SO THE CANE QB CAN LEAD THE RECEIVER. THIS ISN'T ROCKET SCIENCE.

GOLDEN AND D'O ARE MORONS. THE AD AT USC WOULD HAVE MET THEM AT THE AIRPORT AND FIRED THEM IF SOMEHOW THEY COULD EVEN GET THE JOB AT USC.

THEY RECRUIT 170 POUND PLAYERS WHO GET KILLED ON THE FIELD LIKE JOHNSON AND 25. WTF! GET SOME BIG PLAYERS WHO CAN MOVE. LIKE JIMMY JOHNSON SAID, HE RECRUITED SMARTS AND SPEED. GOLDEN DOESN'T WANT ANYONE AROUND WHO IS SMART. MAKES HIM LOOK MORE STUPID THAN HE IS.

Mountain cane,

Why don't you pick a name more suited to who you really are? Gator "Killer" Cane doesn't fit a guy that allows a threat over the internet to force him to change the name he uses to post on a sports blog. Here's a recommendation, GatorPoodleGirlCane.

Merry New Year

PLUS, YOU USE MAN TO MAN ON PASSING PLAYS. A ZONE IS A GIFT TO THE OFFENSE TO MAKE THE FIRST DOWN.

AND ON BLITZES, THE BLITZER HAS TO HAVE A FREE ROUTE TO THE QB, NOT CRASH INTO THE LINE. HOW STUPID IS THAT.

Gee tubby, I guess contractual disputes should only involve white people. They disagreed on the interpretation. Wow, how novel.

Posted by: GatorKillerCane | December 31, 2013 at 07:41 PM

^^What???? Interpretation LMAO!!! What a racist pig U are! And coward at that.

Can U explain this a little more--what was the disagreement about specifically?

Ooooooook duck trigger, keep lying about playing for Miami.......and the joke of the blog continues. What next All American? 1st round draft pick, future HOF? Lmao.

Yeah the JV chess player from Devry University posted that article ..........and the joke continues. Now I'll tell you what's serious, that dome his mother gives, must have learned it from mother, or father......who knows, who cares, ol duck trigger

Duke is currently proving that intelligent coaching and game planning elevates and precipitates talent and motivates players.

Look how lame, awkward and nerdy looking the Duke players are on the sidelines. These are the dudes that blow us back like that???

Their OC and DC (playing our press man D with blitz packages) have their units rolling in confidence and their performance has been lights out.

Cutoliff has a proven track record from his days at UT. We know he's a great coach, it's why Peyton Manning still seeks his counsel. Give a good coach three weeks to prepare and their teams will come out firing in all three aspects of the game. You can win with high academic standards, as long as you have good coaching......you know the Harbough's of the world, the David Shaws of the world

Duke up 35-17 on A and M. Lets not get carried away with our bad year. 9 wins is an improvement. Do we need alot of work yes? But come on. UF was coming off the sugar bowl and went 4-8. We had injuries also... But even with sanctions for 3 years we havent gone 4-8..

Give it a rest. As of next season, more than 1/2 our roster will be ESPN 300 type of talent
Alabama is #1 with 16 ESPn 300 recruits
Miami is #2 with 14 ESPN 300 Recruits
FSU has 9

Here is the link to the 14 ESPN 300 players. also the 2 JUCO kids are on the Rivals JUCO 100.
http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/school/_/id/2390/miami-fl

THATS AN ALABAMA RECRUIT TYPE OF CLASS. This is the kind of class that turned around FSU.

Butch Davis, Greg Schiano, and Rob Chudzinksi are available. Hurry up and grab them! It is time to move on from Al Golden and secure either one of them as Head Coach, or preferably all three of them, and let Butch pass on the baton to one of them in a few years. Those three were part of the coaching nucleus that put together what has been deemed as the "greatest college team of all time" in 2001. The school would be insane to not go after them, while they're still available. Golden is in over his head. Its tiring to continue to hear him infer that we do not have the "players" and have "been playing with one armed tied behind our back" due to the NCAA restrictions. Those are excuses. He makes $2.5 million per year. Let him take the $7.5 million he has made in three years with the school, and move on. Lets give that same salary to Butch, Schiano, or Chudz. Better yet, if the school administration was smart, they'd find a way to bring all three back, similar to the late 90's and early 2000's. All three are proven commodities at the college level. Butch never used the NCAA issue as an excuse. Instead, he recruited two and three star kids, who had speed, and who had a a chip on their shoulder. Most importantly, he and his staff COACHED THE KIDS UP. Would any great coach, such as Saban, Jimmy Johnson, Urban Meyer, or anyone put up with the defense giving up the amount of yardage and points they have the past two years? Of course not. Time to move on. I don't see why we have to go through another year of this coaching staff to make a decision by consensus when three of the great coaches that built this program to be GREAT are available in the wing waiting. TIME TO MOVE ON.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Disappointed beyond words in the way we performed...

The offensive line looked like amateur night against that front. James Coley is a big-time work in progress. Interesting scheme standing all the linemen up. Totally killed us. The defense held the ship as long as they could but Teddy did his thing. Thoroughly out-coached in those respects. That said, with an inept running game and not stopping that rush, we had no chance. Get behind and it was over...

Respect to Golden for owning it and not disrespecting the seniors. Let's keep it moving.

As for the above post, look, none of the coaches you name would come here if we got rid of Al Golden. Even with his poor performance tonight, he guided the program through difficult times. You fire him now and it sends out a signal that the []_[] has no concept of what it takes or the patience to build a championship program. No respectable coach would come here; including those in the above post. Schiano was at Rutgers and had this very job on a platter; Chidzinski was a coordinator in Cleveland; both gave []_[]s the professional stiff-arm on the way to NFL HC gigs before we hired Golden. Check the record. The only person who saw this as a destination job around that time, and spoke of tradition, respect for our legacy, was Al. Not Schiano, and not Chud.

Butch maybe, but only if Al leaves on HIS accord. Firing Golden at this stage of the rebuild sends a message you don't want to send. A message that Butch knows all too well! Butch's record is below, in year three he had taken a step back to 5-6!! Truth is this crowd, on this blog, wouldn't have the patience for another Butch. You wouldn't know one if you had one. You want someone proven... But that's not what we get at the []_[]. Up and comers is what we do. So get used to it. The process...
8-3
9-3
5-6
9-3
9-4

The proven coaches that have money in the bank and just want to coach don't come here. They would come for a college job at the right salary, facilities, opportunity, and patience to build a champion. Just like Spurrier in S. Carolina. He is worshipped. You would kill for Spurrier, no? Didn't see 9 wins till year six, and was .500 in year 3!! And don't tell me about the quality of the SEC. That's bunk.

Spurrier leading S. Carolina since 2005
7-5
8-5
6-6
7-6
7-6
9-5
11-2
11-2
10-2

Not a Golden apologist, just a pragmatist. You need to get the best horses to win the derby, and Rome wasn't built in a day.

Golden has been here 3 years and his record has improved each season despite the you know what organization and the rest of the country hating on this []_[].

Let the man recruit and make his coaching adjustments. Hope he brings back Soldinger. That's a good place to start.

Dont forget we have Derrick Griffin the 6 ft 7 kid(4.4 40) who was the #1 TE/HBack and espn top 30 regardless of position coming from prep school. Thats another weapon for the new QB.
If this OLSEN issue isnt bad, dont underestimate him. Ryan Williams was a 2 star qb coming out of high school where as Olsen was a 5 star on some sites and top 10 qb on most sites. If Ryan wins the job, then spring of 2015 will have Redshirt Soph Olsen and Redshirt Fresh Kaaya battling it out.

Ooooooook duck trigger, keep lying about playing for Miami.......and the joke of the blog continues. What next All American? 1st round draft pick, future HOF? Lmao.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Poor ole Urkel, while I was in the stadium playing she was out trying to convince someone to let her park her Gremlin on their front lawn.

What I'm Lovin' is you and the other clueless haters moaned and cried when the Canes played Duke at their place and lost in a close game all swearing Duke was terrible. Now that Duke is having success against Texas A&M it's because how great their coaching is.

Of course it has taken David Cutcliffe...wait for it...6 years to turn the Duke program around and he didn't have to deal with the worst NCAA persecution since SMU like Al Golden has.

Of course you nimrod haters would have been screaming to fire Cutcliffe!

Listen Urkel, my offer still stands...you can wash my car (you'll also have to vacuum the interior) and I'll give you an autograph.

Its Funny how most of the Non UM Fans on here leave out the 3 year mess of Nevin Shapiro AND ALL THE NEGATIVE RECRUITING, not going to a bowl game, and all season waiting for word on it.

Do you know how many kids we lost because of the negative recruting? They were told Miami is getting what Penn State is getting, 4 bowl bans, you will never go to a bowl game etc. HOW CAN U ALL BLAME GOLDEN FOR THIS??

He weeded out the bad seeds, brought in a great class last year, and now has a LOADED TEAM COMING IN

The Haters on this blog are demanding that Duke fire David Cutcliffe and replace him with Schiano or Butch Davis.

As the haters all said...Duke sucks and the Canes should be humiliated to have lost to them as they are a basketball school and their coaching staff is a joke.

I've gotta tell you...those haters always get it right!!

Texas A&M may come back to win, which will certainly mean that Cutcliffe should be fired before he walks off the field, after all it has taken him 6 years to get Duke in the position they are in now.

Fire Cutcliffe!! Fire Cutcliffe!! Fire Cutcliffe!! Fire Cutcliffe!!

Randy poster, Those Shannon Defenses were loaded with NFL players . This Miami team played freshman last year and has NONE going to the NFL, (Perryman maybe). We have No D LINE STUDS, no Great LBs and all the DB talent is young.

College football matters when your talent is at the freshman and soph level.

Posted by: Mahoney-Pearson | December 31, 2013 at 09:45 PM

You can sit and wait on Spurrier because he's proven. a couple subpar records for a guy with how many SEC championships? Al hasn't won a conference, matter of fact he never won a division, not only here in the ACC but in the darn MAC.

"You need to get the best horses to win the derby"

No one asked for a derby (NC title) win but giving up 500 yards in the last how many games.........? How many horses do you need to prevent that? I bet we are the only team in the NCAA to allow that. Does all other 119 teams have the horsies?

All of that and as U type it the Duke Blue Devils who don't have the "horsies" is murdering TX A&M right now.

Ever coaching change does not require a "rebuilding process". When a coach is intelligent and skilled, it doesn't take 5 years to show. It shows immediately, it has with all the best coaches in football.

The coach U continue to vouch for and promote CANNOT devise a game-plan that weakens the opponents while also empowering his own players with the belief, speed, and passion on display tonight and vs. Louisville when their players became rabid dogs, smelled blood and felt invincible (Charles Gaines specifically).

Keep asking Us to "hope" while we witness teams "do".

Golden said himself that he had the right tools, now the excuse in year three is that he doesn't.

There's zero proof that Golden can develop these "horsies" U speak of, but actually more proof that he can't develop them.

This is not the same situation as Butch Davis's, Davis can game-plan, coach, and develop talent with intelligence. Davis went thru sanctions, Golden has gone thru a trumped up investigation.

South Carolina doesn't boast and isn't supported by the same fertile recruiting region that UM has and does not have the same history and thus expectations for success.

Rome wasn't built in a day because it took years to steal and implement all of the infrastructure and socioeconomic blueprints from African empires. When the documents were lost, so was Rome. The point is that Golden has been caught cheating and trying to implement a PSU blueprint in culture and style of play. It aint working, and no horse is gonna change that.

In life U either be smart or U cheat.

I seem to remember a bunch of posters saying 'how can we lose to Duke', well hell they almost beat us last year, and guess what they're a good F'ing team that's why. Let the Butch Davis call go, there is no way he'd come back here. We have AG for a while and YES he damn sure needs to address the DC, but it won't be with Butch or Schiano, those guys were HC's and won't take a step backwards. I'd wish we could get UF's DC, and let him take the studs will be getting under his wing.

By the way...David Cutcliffe is one of the numerous coaches who expressed his admiration for Al Golden and the job he's done at the "U" against impossible odds.

Naturally, the haters wailed that Cutcliffe has no idea as to what he's talking about and besides that he's the coach of DUKE so he doesn't know anything.

I dedicate the following quote to the haters: "Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain - and most fools do." ~Benjamin Franklin

Every person on here or most miami fans wanted Butch ran out of town. You all know it took him his 6th year to win 10 or more right? He started in 1995, and finally in 2000 is when we broke thru during those sanction times.......

The point is when you have probation or cant recruit the way you want to, it takes time..........now there are no sanctions, and the recruits will come.

Posted by: Ron Zook | December 31, 2013 at 09:56 PM

Idiot stop making a fool out of yourself. no one expected Duke to accomplish what they've done this year. Cutliffe overachieved, something Alverage has never done. Stop trying to compare a DIVISION winning coach to that bum Alverage Folden.

Dom, we haven't been on probation and the sanctions just began.

MaHaoney, "In your words, a national championship winning, all American, first round NFL draft pick"

Sure he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Benjamin Franklin was a known spy for England during the colonization of America.

Makes sense that a turncoat and spy quotes another of his kind.

C'mon folks, if the haters followed Duke they would have been on the Duke blogs screaming for David Cutliffe to be fired.

One of the lead numbskulls is now posting that Duke is proving what great coaching means due to their performance tonight. Yet, when the same coaching staff barely got by Miami the same Hater(s) never once mentioned the great Duke coaching staff and only wet their already soiled pants screaming it was all Al Golden's fault.

Texans hire O'Brien, now who in here thinks the AD at Pedo State will call this bum Alverage Folden?

I don't

I never mentioned the Duke coaching staff once because I never knew prior to our game with them that they had a great coaching staff. The way the called that game put them on the map with me.

The question is: if U knew they had a great coaching staff and U believe that they have superior talent personnel-wise, then why did U expect UM to win the game, why were U surprised?

Also, since U are now slurping Cutliffe, is Cutliffe a superior coach to Golden?
