Hurns named team MVP at Hurricanes award banquet

The Miami Hurricanes football team held its 2013 Canes Football Awards Show on Saturday night at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall located inside the Frost School of Music.

Joe Zagacki, the “Voice of the Miami Hurricanes”, served as the awards show’s emcee. The show opened with the top 13 plays of the 2013 season.

The Hurricanes coaching staff handed out 21 annual player awards. Freshman WR/KR Stacy Coley was named the team’s Newcomer of the Year; junior LB and Butkus Award semifinalist Denzel Perryman was named Defensive MVP, while senior OG and Senior Bowl participant Brandon Linder was named Offensive MVP.

Second-team All-America P Pat O’Donnell was named Special Teams MVP and senior WR Allen Hurns was awarded the Jack Harding Team Most Valuable Player award.

Throughout the evening, several video messages from prominent #ProCanes were played for the team – Warren Sapp, Michael Irvin, Andre Johnson, Clinton Portis, Ed Reed, Jon Beason, Antrel Rolle, Devin Hester and Greg Olsen.

QB Stephen Morris was the recipient of the Plumer Award for Leadership, Motivation and Spirit. Senior DE Shayon Green received the Melching Leadership Award. Both awards are voted on by the team.

At the end of the night, head coach Al Golden thanked the senior class and all 25 seniors were presented with their framed jersey.

Damn Zook, are U hibernating ? Gotta say, this blog the last 24 hours has never been so unpolluted of nonsensical, idiotic homerism in years... Have a nice loooonnnnng slumber Zook. Stay away and don't comeback anytime soon now ya hear.

but when U do climb out from under ur rock, do tell all about 240lb Chad Thomas and 225lb Demetrius Jackson and how they'll be future STARS at DEFENSIVE TACKLE for the Canes Soon !!!

Congratulations Allen Hurns on your winning the MVP Award. Thank you for being an outstanding young man. Congratulations to all the award winning Miami Hurricanes.

Hope to see the winning bowl game trophy for you seniors, especially.

Hurns and Coley are playmakers...congrats. Difficult task ahead for defense...not just Louisville...but the future...the def really needs to find itself...can we throw some $$$$ at Ed Oregeron???

Unfortunately nothing will happen to D'o until after the bowl game. This game is a win win and a lose lose for us. If we win ,we win a bowl against a good team but D'o stays and it helps recruiting. If we lose,we get rid of D'o with a dent in recruiting. I hope for a win and D'o gets fired. But thats not gonna happen.

Texas has Golden on their Christmas list. But Brown say's the horns won't wait 6-7 years before results are supposed to happen like Miami is doing. So look for Golden and the no defense to continue here at UM. The dolphins had the no name defense, but we just have no defense.

Hurns is definitely part of the best WR corps ever at UM. This OC os OK, but...

Congrats to Hurns.

With 3 game wins on NCAA football bracket next year to get to national championship......um will not advance with this coaching staff......they will be outmatched. This star stuff is meaningless..... Golden is not experienced enough
Only the very best will advance since each bracket will have 3/4 teams like fsu. Clemson maybe ohio state and Stanford types

They will get knocked out in first round if they even are picked as a final 16

Good coaches realize when it is time to make changes on the coaching staff. You can't be stubborn and have to move the Program along. Sometimes, you have to abandon your philosophy when things are coming apart. Golden is an Al Groh disciple. Groh was fired by Ga. Tech because the defense there was floundering. He may not even be coaching anymore. It's a defense that works better in the NFL because it is complicated. You can't have players on the field thinking too much and not reacting quickly. I know UM's defense lacks talent, but they are still making too many mental mistakes, which is not related to talent. Golden can't be a great coach unless he's flexible. All the great coaches are.

Groh was fired at UVA for not winning a division title either rboud . . .

Texas won't hire Briles who's a winner at every stop he's been at, how would they ever spend a dime for this loser handing out the senior awards in Coral Gables?

Gallo their is only a 4 team playoff...not 16

there*

I don't think so .....16 are initially picked so 16 becomes 8 them becomes 4 then the tensing 2 play for national championship......so if um goes out west it might have in it's bracket Ohio state , Stanford , michigan state etc ..... So there's south - west - east- Midwest .... Think March madness sweet 16 to start .....500 yard defense you'll get crushed with no qb .... Forget 2014

Typo last 2 play for national championship

For the record u idiot. Chad thomas and Jackson are de's, olb' types everyone knows that duechebag. The tackles are travonte valentine and such. If u are gonna bash miami at least get the recruits positions right.

15 yrs you are nothing but a dooche bag of major proportions- calling Al Golden a loser shows how much of a loser YOU are.

Man has had the NCAA anchor around his neck for the last 3 years. What coach would have hung around and accepted that? NONE.
And yet he continued to recruit and reuild this program. We have a bonafide Number 2 class in recruiting going into January. If it all pans out and commits sign, this will be a major coup given thathe did it mostly with the NCAa sanctions looming

As a game coach he is not Nick Saban nor Bear Bryant. But you losers (including cool cat and calvn- which you may be) cant accept the fact that this team is better for having Golden. No other coach would have come here. We all should be thankful thathe has stayed and loves this program and loves these kids.

We 9-3. How is that being a loser, youloser? Am I happy that we lost to FSU? No way.

Am I happy that we beat the gators? H--l yeaaaah!

Were in a bowl. First one in 3 years.

YOU are the loser

as for me,

Thank you coach Golden

/\/\/\

It's a Ganes thing, you never understand.

Who won the gators team MVP....Ga Southern?

According to fsu, duke, vt,wake, gt coach d was named coordinator of the year. Congrats to one heck of a coach.

So you saying they gave the "excellence in coaching" award to the wrong person, lol!

I was really hoping to get a couple more of these local kids but seems like Dixon may be OSU bound. Good luck to him and I have a feeling Cook will head north as well. Either way i'm looking forward to next season and the incoming recruits that take pride in being Miami Hurricanes.

Bridgewater has already donated to Miami on the behalf of coach d for helping solidify his draft stock.

Travonte Valentine just announced that he's going to re-open up his recruiting process for visits, but still "feels" as though is still " unofficially" and partially commited to the Canes ? This is a guy that commited to FSU, got love, then it cooled, decommited and then commited to Florida. Then the Florida love wore off, decommited and commited to Miami. The Cane love is wearing off and now has opened up his recruiting again ? Who does this ESPN #16 ranked DT and overall #170 ranked recruit think he is ? And he's our Top-ranked DT that we're supposed to rely and count on ? There are 5 other DT's ranked ahead of him that are uncommitted ? I would say drop this kid and go after them, but not one has or is considering or scheduled to visit us at all.

We have 3 other DT's commited. Moten is a nice player, but at 285, is projected as a strong side D-End (if he loses the baby fat and he has a lot of it) tweener that "can" move inside when needed occasionally for Dime and Nickle pass rush.. Certainly not a strict, true run stopping inside clog everydown DT. The two other commits, well one's an unranked JUCO DT with minimal offers and the other is a 2-star that only PITT has offered other than us.

Look at all the 25 or so DT's in ESPNS Top-300. Why can't we get these out of State and S.Florida kids to just even visit ?

Here we go again.

I'm sure it's not happening to just []_[]s. We flipped a Louisville kid the other day that said his dream was to be a cane. That's what it is. These kids like the attention. He prolly wants to take more visits, eat free food and then play 3 hat monte.

Golden can't pull the scholly on this one, although that would be the move. We are too much in a position of need and Golden got too much negative press from that fiasco last year.

Just gotta keep recruiting.

Good for Hurns

Nothing for Duke? Are you kidding me? He had almost 900 yards and 4 games left before he crunched his ankle and the offense sank after that. Come on man!

Nice Haul ---Kai Hester #7 player in NJ and our 14th ESPN 300 players committed. #196 overall on ESPN 300.

WE have 14 ESPN 300 Players.....FOURTEEN, and thats w/o Dixon, Cook, and some other late great signees Goldent will get...........Even if the class ended with this 29, half the kids are on the espn 300.........

We have 1/3 of roster, 30 kids, all at the Butch Davis Talent level coming in-- if we lose 1-2 Gallo and haters, so be it, this years class is loaded, and U know Golden will land some late 4=5 star kids - Last year he stole #1QB and #1DE in the entire State of new Jersey Olsen and Alaquaddin Muhammed.
now he just stole the #7 player from NJ, barrios 1 of the top WR's in USA and top 5 kid From North Carolina, and I am sure there will be some later additions from other states .

Last year you jokers were blasting golden for no lcoal talent and now we have too much

If Brandon Powell, also ESPN 300 player and 4 star on Rivals leaves, its becasue cook is coming. But NEXT YEAR WE WILL HAVE GORE,PORTIS,MCGAHEE,JARRET PAYTON ALL OVER AGAIN, with yearby, powell, maybe cook or michel or both? U NEVER KNOW............

But adding the #7 player from New Jersey , an athlete, another STud, just keeps the depth really loaded with young talent. Goldie's building with Dumbo took from us........Thats why FSU is good now. Canes were on probabtion basically, and FSU has beaten UF to the top kids at skill positions, and Dumbo has the best team now.

WE ARE NOT FAR BEHIND. GALLO---LOADED BABY

Loaded

loaded for what? the incoming talent is not as good as the 2013 starters.....and UM lost to lowly duke.....

Olsen is nowhere near the talent of Morris.....so what is your point?

6-6 at best 2014.....UM's coaching staff is inept....this staff can not compete with the playoff system now......the defense gives up 500 yards per game and most of those picks are goldens....

u r kidding me right. Moten, Valentine. thomas and jackson are better then green, and those guys. They have alot more natural talent to build on. The incoming recruits in the front 7 on d is better then 13 starters .

Gallo I remember you running your mouth about all the 2*and unrated players golden was getting now you are running your mouth saying stars dont mean anything , you cant have it both ways TARD . Go Canes

Let's see....

Moten and Valentine are gonna be better than Pierre/ Porter/Chick?

And Thomas and Jackson are gonna be better than a 5th year sr and AQM/McCord?

I can hear u suckers hollering "they're only freshmen" now!!

The long winded, tiresome Gallo doesn't seem to know that next year the BCS is a 4 team tournmant.

For the young men who are truly undecided about their future the reason for delay is obvious. However, for the kid who says I know where I want to be 100% but I'm gonna wait 3 weeks to announce at halftime of the UA game, you're just holding programs hostage and potentially preventing other young men from getting a scholarship offer.

Even if you pick my school that I very much wish you'd attend, it's just not the right way to go about things. Not when you know 100%

Immature, selfish, and a little disappointing.

You never know. I think Stacy Coley makes this a legitimate argument. Our safety play has been pretty lack-luster. Anyone who comes in laying wood can get PT. Same with DT, if you arrive with the physique and come off the ball with leverage there is PT to be had.

Terrific choice for MVP. Hurns was money.

I can still remember his first catch. It was at Maryland. He caught four that game It was Coach Golden's first game, first loss. Some things don't change much: over the next three years, Hurns would catch a lot of balls for the Canes, many of them clutch, and the Defense would give up too many yards to win the game.

"We had enough (players) on this trip to win this game," Golden said. "But you can't give up that many yards, no matter who is in the game."

Got to get it fixed, Coach.

^^^^^^^^^

It's far more likely a stud wr comes in and causes havock than a dlineman.

Julio Jones, AJ Green, Sammy Watkins, Amari Cooper come right to mind.

Also in this scheme the Mac staff plays when do you ever see our dl's fire off the ball w/leverage other than obvious passing downs.

And on those passing downs later in the season opposing oc's figured that isht out and they screened us to death ala fsu w/devonte freeman.

"We had enough (players) on this trip to win this game," Golden said. "But you can't give up that many yards, no matter who is in the game."

Wasn't long after that when we started to hear depth, guys not buying in, freelancing, gap integrity, playing young guy, and now cutting guys lose...

Btw Hurns had a few catches his frosh year in 2010.

that's even worse.....if it come to the top 4 teams UM NEVER gets in....

you would have to get to a bcs type bowl (old system) first then qualify for 4 team playoff......forget it

keep dreaming.....golden/dnofrio don't have it to go that far, you saw it this year.....all seniors basically with the 3rd best QB in cane history and couldn't win the lowly coastal.....

if you cant get past a weak team like duke....how you gonna beat clemson - fsu and the like?

kevin olsen, lol...that's a good one....watch how he struggles just like he did in the under amour game......he is not good....just an average QB from NJ......

same arguments with figueroa.....freshman did nothing this year.....was confused just like I said he would be....

It doesn't matter who's playing safety, they will not have the opportunity to lay wood because they are 30 yards away from the line of scrimmage fielding punts... How often when you watched a game on TV do you even see the safeties on the screen?

It doesn't matter who is playing DT. You wont see them firing off the ball because they are covering two gaps. You will see them doing what they have always been doing, engaging the offensive lineman.

Last years excuse was the defense was too young and undersized... This year after most of the defense comes back bigger and stronger, the excuse is they aren't talented enough... Who wants to bet that next years excuse will be they're too young again.

Well since everyone posting is talking about nothing but ' the we don't do this or that, or we won't be this or that, or Gallo spewing his OBVIOUS observations, I'll remind everyone we have a BOWL game to play. Against a good team, and a chance at a strong finish, and a 10 win season no less. Hopefully Dno won't have the db's 20 yds from the los, and we'll actually have some disguised blitzes, and pressure TB. Study the Cincy and UCF films, and see how they disrupted him. Our O should be ok, plus we get Dorsett back.

I luv KAK just like I said I did.

Credibility Gallo,

Your argument is BADLY undercut if you hadn't even realized the playoff system basics before prognosticating...but, you brush the correction aside and spin it to bolster your point?!! That's not how it works...LOL.

I think the canes probably suffer next year on defense. Olsen is a huge question mark. DNO clearly sucks, but really?!

I also remember you having a fundamental misunderstanding of legal basics before spouting off evidentiary "expertise" regarding the ncaa case...

Just wow.

Congratulations to Allen Hurns

Just curious, what gives you any indication this will happen? After 36 games why would you expect this to all of a sudden happen?

ROFL, this man knows his football too, tell em, and apparently "U-tough"(corny name)only works for the offensive side of the ball.
