Hurns named team MVP at Hurricanes award banquet

The Miami Hurricanes football team held its 2013 Canes Football Awards Show on Saturday night at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall located inside the Frost School of Music.

Joe Zagacki, the “Voice of the Miami Hurricanes”, served as the awards show’s emcee. The show opened with the top 13 plays of the 2013 season.

The Hurricanes coaching staff handed out 21 annual player awards. Freshman WR/KR Stacy Coley was named the team’s Newcomer of the Year; junior LB and Butkus Award semifinalist Denzel Perryman was named Defensive MVP, while senior OG and Senior Bowl participant Brandon Linder was named Offensive MVP.

Second-team All-America P Pat O’Donnell was named Special Teams MVP and senior WR Allen Hurns was awarded the Jack Harding Team Most Valuable Player award.

Throughout the evening, several video messages from prominent #ProCanes were played for the team – Warren Sapp, Michael Irvin, Andre Johnson, Clinton Portis, Ed Reed, Jon Beason, Antrel Rolle, Devin Hester and Greg Olsen.

QB Stephen Morris was the recipient of the Plumer Award for Leadership, Motivation and Spirit. Senior DE Shayon Green received the Melching Leadership Award. Both awards are voted on by the team.

At the end of the night, head coach Al Golden thanked the senior class and all 25 seniors were presented with their framed jersey.

I keep telling people, scouts & nfl people aren't going to be able to evaluate our db's unless they go to live games, cause any film they get, they won't be on there, 30 yards back, no wonder deon bush had to have groin surgery!

Whoever thinks we'll actually be a better defense come next year, you need your head examined, moron's #1 & 2 think this is a 7 on 11 tournament. We basically play 7 defenders vs 11 offensive players. With the safties 30 yards back and the db's turning around to catch-up with them, that's 4 players going the wrong way pre-snap. How in the hell are you ever going to be a top notch playing defense in retreat mode.

believe what you want......

2011: nothing
2012: nothing
2013: nothing

the goal is to play in a national championship...not to go to a "bowl" of have a winning season.....al golden cant not take this team to a NC.....

so why is he here? UM cant get past FSU until winston graduates or gets hurt....all this talk about schemes and rival ratings....whats the purpose?

In a playoff system only the very best survive.....tell me how 2015/2016/2017 goes, lol

UM does not have a QB going forward....wait till either olsen or williams start f...cking up in real game situations....next year UM will not even be in the top 25.....you will all see how graduation (shannons players) takes its toll.....

At least we didn't give up many long bombs. LOL

Gallo, please drink a gallon of bleach, then we can talk.

Calvin aka Harriet, it's funny, you ONLY seem to come on this blog when you see that there are only people ripping the team, it's like you sit back n wait, and say ' ok I see my peeps on here today, so now I'll come on here n talking my sheet', you're a sorry loser dude to be sure. You n your alter ego's think your being smart with your OBVIOUS little insider tid bits, and I told you so's, lol. Very funny, lol.

"smooth sailing into the arms of defenders"
Williams / Olsen

and that's against our own weak defense.....Morris was EVERYTHING this year....

I hope Olsen/Williams play against Louisville.....that will be funny....then all this BS will be put to rest.....go ahead golden....play them, put your money where your mouth is....all these great NJ finds, lol

Just curious, what gives you any indication this will happen? After 36 games why would you expect this to all of a sudden happen?

DaU, as I posted, I said (hopefully), and again 'hopefully' he'll see that he needs to CHANGE his methods or once again we'll get 4 to 500 yds put up against us. Since we have no DL, then some disguised blitzes would help those guys out, and put some pressure on TB. I'm not giving DNO a leash, this bowl game should be his LAST chance to show something. If not then, he needs to be let go.

Cola Cane,

I don't think we should allow whatever happens in the bowl game delay the inevitable. That guy has to go. It's easy to say we don't have any d-lineman when they are being asked to do the total opposite they did to make it to college.

DaU I agree to a certain extent on the DL, but you also have an innate instinct to get to a qb ANY way you can, and no coaching would keep me from using a swim move or a stunt. Those kids surely know how to do that without coaching, and if not, then Jethro needs to get with Uncle Jed and Granny, and go back to Bug Tussle.

Cola,

When they start using their "instinct" they are called freelancers, case and point Luther Robinson against BC. It's comical to me to read how fans are raving about the guys coming in. What are we going to do with Thomas? The same thing we did with Chick? This staff preached gain weight get stronger, over and over to him, now NFL scouts are saying he'll have to lose weight to even be productive in the league. Something is missing here. And I think we all know what it is.

All we can do is hope DaU. That's all I'm doing, and God knows DNO has to see that he needs a different strategy. Play man, stuff receivers at the los to disrupt the timing, it's really basic, and hope that he damn sure comes out of his shell for this game. We need this win probably more than L'ville does.

swim move, lmao....oh god what a bunch of idiot kids.....

fyi.....golden is not getting rid of dnofrio....don't you get it...both have to go....you just are too stupid.....golden does not see dnofrio as the problem....he sees the players as the problem...golden is entrenched in his relationship with him and there are no pressures from shalala or blake....everyone are "friends"

ward emanuel (new AD) at Uconn didnt know or care about the old staff.....he just came in and said "pack your bags".....blake is a pu.....y

Amazing that this Gallo maggot has all the answers yet spends all his time posting here instead of actually coaching, or becoming an AD. What a waste of amazing talent, Gallo, you sick maggot.

You right, at least we were at the top of something, we had to be the #1 team in the nation against the bomb this year, no passes completed against us threw the air of 30 yards or more, they may have run a screen pass and got more yards, but not that many yards thru the air, no-way.

The sad part is, that's more of that big 10 penn disgrace philosophy of fotball, like one big play is going to cost you the game, these queers need to man-up, but since they're soft, this team is becoming soft.

Year 3, this team, particularly the defense has definitely taken on the personality of the headcoach & clown 500. That alone is grounds for them to be terminated, but troll shalala i'm sure can't wait to put up the pink curtains she just bought in the men's locker room. She has more ballz than goldie & clown 500.

Don't waste your time with that guy, he's another moron goldie & clown 500 apologist, brings nothing to the board. Instead of worrying about us, this guy has figured out our screen names, as well as clown 500 has called defensive games the 2nd half of the season, hey think just alike, matter of fact, i'm starting to think rz is moron goldie, & cola is clown 500. If not, how else can you explain the idiocy!

Got to give it to Gallo, he figured out that the object of college football is to win the NC. He didn't know how the tournament will be structured to achieve that objective, but hey its a start.

Maybe make a long list would help him keep it straight.

The maggot Gallo can make a list of different methods to determine a champion, then see which he likes best, then pass that along to the NCAA.

Double - elim;
4, 8, 16 seed tourney;
3 round robin;
Back to the old bowl system.

It's just that you are a stupid jackass, Gallober.

Wow what a comeback Calvin, how original, and not too mention STUPID as most of your (Gee I state the obvious) postings. Apparently when you read you don't comprehend another posts, as I never take up for Dno, as evidenced by my above posts. Again you only come on here when others are ripping the coaching staff, and stay back in your little whussy corner until they do. Guys like you we used to stuff into lockers, and be GD glad you're not in arms length, because I'd happily put you in one.

I along with others are very concerned about the D and it's current leader, but we still back the kids, something you NEVER do. Why not show a little class and say something positive and uplifting with your words of wisdom to actually give the players some f'ing motivation for the bowl game. Oh that's right, you just wanna beetch.

For the record u idiot. Chad thomas and Jackson are de's, olb' types everyone knows that duechebag. The tackles are travonte valentine and such. If u are gonna bash miami at least get the recruits positions right.

Posted by: mainecane | December 15, 2013 at 01:49 PM

Miami is loading up on the defensive side of the ball, especially tackles. Five-star recruit Chad Thomas, 4-star recruit Demetrius Jackson and 4-star recruit Anthony Moten will eventually anchor a line that was pushed all over the field the past few years.

.

For the record U Colossal idiot, it was Ur resident Cane spinmaster Zook trying to tell all U clueless Canes how "Miami is loading up on the defensive side of the ball, especially tackles." Then proceeds to spout off about 2 waaay undersized, and always will be, D-Ends. Then a legit 275lb D-End that Goldy will try to fatten up an already baby-fat Moten to play D-Tackle, minus the D-Tackle mentality, because of desperate need. Without even mentioning Travonte Valentine, because he is decommitting and then 2 other UNRANKED scrub D-Tackles with ZERO Top-Program offers.

"Miami is loading up on the defensive side of the ball, especially tackles."

Gee, where have U heard that before ?

Deja vU U ... again.

Gallo you dumb boob, so does that mean that the years 1984, 86, 88, 90, 92, 93, 94, 95-99, 00, 02, 03-13 are all wasted yrs bc we didnt win a ship?

^^^^

twisted dumb logic by a twisted dumb dweeb

The tackles are travonte valentine and such.

Who are these figments of your imagination tackles U speak of named "such" ? Are they SUCH brothers or Cousins from Fantasyland High School?

Calvin, you're rounding into rare form for the holidays I see. I don't think the apologists are the actual culprits they apologize for, they're more like Chris Freet flunkies.

Pink drapes for the men's locker room from the president was funny.

Hey, blog Pig. Didn't hear how weak Moten or these other guys were when the UFraud was after them. Only when they commit to Miami are they all of a sudden weak/undersized/soft. Funny how that works, you sick Pig.

Why don't you give us another limp-wristed, chin-quivering mea culpa like you did after the Canes pounded the Gatr Trash? Mix in some nonsense about marines and how you would never post here again.

It was funny then, it will be funny now, you sick piece of garbage. Vagotis says you are a f#g.

WE ARE NOT FAR BEHIND. GALLO---LOADED BABY

what will your excuse be?

Cola, U keep yelling that the bloggers U disagree with, keep "stating the obvious."

If what they state is obvious, then why don't U agree with what they state?

Why come here to study other men's blogging habits and frequencies of posts??

Again, who's more obsessed? A fan who is obsessed with the state of his team or a fan that is obsessed with a fan who is obsessed with the state of his team?

Tubby, ur the queen of obsessed, esp with anything negative Re; Canes.

And right on cue, the other man watcher and man worshipper (golden ) steps in to prove my point. Again, but U are obsessed with someone supposedly obsessed with negativity. Thats a double negative lol. Everything I've said has been explained to a tee--if U call it negative--so be it.

There is no obsession, it's simply that you guys do nothing but bring up what we already know and in no way offer support to the team. You don't think kids read these blogs? If you're so-called fans, then why not instead of constantly berating the coaches, (which I agree to some extent) give some positivity to the players, so when they come on these blogs, they can see 'well hey the fans are behind us', as opposed to them seeing sheet about the staff. It can demoralize them, because they're still not old enough to blow it off like adults can.

I mean I come on here earlier, and not ONE blogger talking about the bowl game, so I brought it up. It's ridiculous. We have a chance at a 10 win freaking season against a good ranked team. They need our support.

No I don't think kids read these blogs. Whenever asked they unanimously say they don't. Again, if U already know it then why don't U agree with it? Are U saying that there's no posters who provide opposition to what we believe? If so, then where are your posts at them for being "obvious".

I've thoroughly explained how I feel that my posts support the team, it may not be the "till the wheels fall off", "hear no evil, see no evil", "stay the course" support U believe in in but its support nonetheless. I'm a voice for them since they can't say what they truly think or know being that its a clear case of conflict of interest.

They know these coaches are subpar to their talents and abilities.

U throw them under the bus when they get dismissed, transfer, or after we have a bad showing on the field, so who really has their backs. A poster who soley blames them like their coaches and the above media (Manny and Susan) or a poster who has the nerve to demand accountability from millionaire adults?

Please stop with the projection--in all honesty--U should support the players more.

cola, what U don't understand is that U can support the players without liking the coaches. "Supporting the players" doesn't denote supporting the coaching philosophy. They've had banquet and awards ceremonies--so your efforts to stop coaching criticism on this one Canes blog, doesn't impact them or the fun they are having being UM football players.

The prevailing sentiment is that the coaches are great--thats a national sentiment. But U want us to believe that a few bloggers thoughts on the MH is challenging or derailing that agenda--please.

U are a soldier without a war.

People support the US soldiers who go to war everyday, without also supporting the politics or politicians who send them off to war.

Isn't everyone's talent argument the biggest lack of support. All these fans that blame talent for the last place defense in the acc for two straight years is basically saying their the worst players in their conf. How does that them feel. Fans who call out dno and this staff are in full support of the players and lets them know hey man we know you're better but these coaches are you back. I always supported the players bc I never once believed their talent was anywhere near close to 116 and last in acc. I always felt it was the coaches who made this mess of a defense. So all the fans who keep saying we have no talent are basically constantly calling our players scrubs so where's the support in that

We get it. The U needs to hire the likes of UPS chasing thieves like Calvin who know much about footbsll. We want to go straight to the NC game. We also want to graduate from college wothout ever going to high school.
This is very funny indeed.

UM is allowing its employees to dictate their own job descriptions. We don't the players to be "Raised' again, we need them to be intellectually and physically improved football players.

I'm tired of watching our soldiers go into battle ill-prepared against inferior armies because of its leadership who blames them for the defeats and continually flawed schemes and results. Our opponents have better generals.

I'm sure UM offers PSY classes already, let the players take them if they wish. Coach football, not dissertations in public perception and politics.

JSY, are you even serious? So, your solution is to keep complaining about the DC when you know fully well that it is the HC who dictates thw scheme? Your constant whining makes you a hater. We all want the best for the team. It was shown earlier that the MSU coaches needed 4 years wothout the NCAA issues to have a top rated D. You need to give these coaches a chance instead of this constant whining. You are different tan the UPS chaser Calvin.

The point was which argument truly supports the players?

These clowns are comical, they support the 2 morons that just got to UM 3 years ago trying to tell the school that basically produced enuff defensive hall of famers past and present and forth-coming to field a whole unit. SEAN TAYLOR is a HOF no matter what anybody says so add him to the list. So that makes the 2 best safeties of all-time on the back end, work your way down from there.

But yet we got imbeciles trying to support 2 morons that haven't been or coached any True HOF talent trying to tell potential HOF's how to play defense, lol, it's comical!

Yeah, it is comical. Do you know any football at all Cal? Just because you come to a blog and run your mouth off doesn't make it that you know what you are talking about.

I guess we'll sit back and give them 3 more years, because it took Michigan St 4 years.

We're in the most fertile recruiting grounds in America so that logic isn't very wise imo.

I don't think the talent is as bad as you claim.

Posted by: DaU | December 16, 2013 at 05:18 PM

I am viewing the past three years as the first three years of B Davis. This coaching staff has earned some additional time. I don't like the stats either (worst 3rd down rates on both O and D). I believe some of our guys were playing hurt. With the talent these coaches are bringing in we should be a lot better across the board in the future.

At this point in time, we need coaching continuity. We'll be set back a few more years if changes are made now.

Set back?! There's no bigger set back than two straight years of absolutely horrendous defense.

All I ask is what evidence do we have that these guys defensive scheme works? We know our kids are a proven commodity. Do you remember the first excuse was the kids were not in shape and inexperienced? The kids did everything thing asked of them and the defense still looks like we have a first year defensive coordinator.

When you're dead last in defense, are you telling us a coaching change would make that worst. Since when has UM ever had to bottom out on defense. I know talent better than these 2 penn queers, these guys don't have a clue about how defense is suppose to be played, the problem with them is they come out of a system that's built for the not-so-athletic club, so their idealogy of football is centered around that, in the meantime, all the other schools can't wait to get there hands on our guys from down here, they know why, you think jim tressel brought chris gamble all the way to osu to play 10 yards off his man.

Whatever version of big 10 defense we're running, it's not the aggressive version i can tell you that.

These penn disgrace queers scheme is just that and needs to be dealt with NOW!

There is no problem with any scheme if it is executed. Our problems with execution extends beyond the defense.

These coaches are outstanding and have shown to be willing to change to adapt to the personnel. They are recruiting well and talent covers up execution problems to a large extent. As a team, we are improved from 2012 to 2013 and that's all one can ask for when you're under the NCAA cloud. The coaches are on the clock now and they will start to deliver.

For those of you clamoring for change, what are our coaching options at the moment? Speculate.

All I ask is what evidence do we have that these guys defensive scheme works? We know our kids are a proven commodity. Do you remember the first excuse was the kids were not in shape and inexperienced? The kids did everything thing asked of them and the defense still looks like we have a first year defensive coordinator.

/////////////////////////////

And according to the morons, they got rid of all the kids who didn't buy in, so no off the field distractions and everybody did what was asked of them and the end result is dead last. I said it in these bozo's 1st year and i'll say it again, i'll take any of shannon's so called out of shape teams over any of these supposedly in shape moron teams when it comes to playing defense. This guy keeps trying to sell b.s. about clown 500 knowing full well going into year 4 it's going to be a problem. Again, if there is no depth on defense, that's on these clowns, how many d-linemen have come thru here since they've been here and you trying to tell me none of these guys have panned out.

Let's see:

3g
grimble
earl moore
corey king
ricardo williams
jelani hamilton
olsen pierre
dwayne holliett
dequan ivery
(she's your queen to be) Ufomba Kamalu
darrin smith(same thing happened to him that happened to cp this year, was asked to put on to much weight and rendered himself ineffective his senior year to)
wtf renfrow
//////////////////////////////

And these are the guys they brought in, now to the guys that were more productive before they got here:

olvier vernon(just rush the passer only is one of the tops in the league at doing that, no pass coverage necessary)
kelvin cain
curtis porter
luther robinson

Somebody has to be able to be productive somewhere!

It is comical that ignorant guys passing themselves off as experts. We lost 40-3 to LSU in 2005. We gave up 468 yards as well. We had NFL first rounders:

K Phillips
B Merriweather
J Beason
K Jennings

and a bunch of other productive guys including Rocky McIntosh, Maxey etc. And we still lost. Our roster is no where close to this today. We need guys that work hard. Unfortunately, some of these guys consider college to be a destination.

We had great expectations for Forston but he was a miserable failure that decided to leave early. Vernon left us early. This year the staff brought two guys on the DL just to fill the gap because the guys here were not cutting it. All across the board talent is being identified and developed and only Cal the clown can call the coaches clowns. Cal doesn't know his right hand from the left, and he pretends to know football. Please Cal, if you don't know, keep your thoughts to yourself.

Idiot kids that thing they know UM football.....the so called NCAA cloud had nothing to do with playing football on Saturdays and working during the week......there were no NCAA "agents" on campus saying you cant do this and you cant do that....

2010:
total offense - 5499 yards / #31 rank
total defense - 4203 yards / #22 rank

this is why shalala got rid of shannon

2013:
total offense - 5362 yards / #39
total defense - 4986 yards / #78

a total waste of time.....so why are these 2 golden/dnofrio still here after 3 full years?

where is the improvement? tell exactly what they did that is better now than in 2010?

We know our kids are a proven commodity. Do you remember the first excuse was the kids were not in shape and inexperienced? The kids did everything thing asked of them and the defense still looks like we have a first year defensive coordinator.
