Hurns named team MVP at Hurricanes award banquet

The Miami Hurricanes football team held its 2013 Canes Football Awards Show on Saturday night at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall located inside the Frost School of Music.

Joe Zagacki, the “Voice of the Miami Hurricanes”, served as the awards show’s emcee. The show opened with the top 13 plays of the 2013 season.

The Hurricanes coaching staff handed out 21 annual player awards. Freshman WR/KR Stacy Coley was named the team’s Newcomer of the Year; junior LB and Butkus Award semifinalist Denzel Perryman was named Defensive MVP, while senior OG and Senior Bowl participant Brandon Linder was named Offensive MVP.

Second-team All-America P Pat O’Donnell was named Special Teams MVP and senior WR Allen Hurns was awarded the Jack Harding Team Most Valuable Player award.

Throughout the evening, several video messages from prominent #ProCanes were played for the team – Warren Sapp, Michael Irvin, Andre Johnson, Clinton Portis, Ed Reed, Jon Beason, Antrel Rolle, Devin Hester and Greg Olsen.

QB Stephen Morris was the recipient of the Plumer Award for Leadership, Motivation and Spirit. Senior DE Shayon Green received the Melching Leadership Award. Both awards are voted on by the team.

At the end of the night, head coach Al Golden thanked the senior class and all 25 seniors were presented with their framed jersey.

2010:
total offense - 5499 yards / #31 rank
total defense - 4203 yards / #22 rank

this is why shalala got rid of shannon

2013:
total offense - 5362 yards / #39
total defense - 4986 yards / #78

^^total exposure

here is where it gets nauseating....

2013: UM

total offense - 5362 yards / #39
total defense - 4986 yards / #79

2013: FSU

total offense - 6882 yards / #6
total defense - 3491 yards / #3

golden dnofrio will never hit those numbers....take morris out of the picture and it is over for UM.....you can jerk yourselves to death with incoming ranking of these kids....it is meaningless because UM lacks the both leadership to make hard decisions as well as the ability to have smart and effective game plans.....

no wonder jimbo fisher was calling the offensive plays vs coley last year....

the more you look at where UM is now.....we made a HUGE mistake getting rid of randy shannon....

UM would have teddy bridgewater who at this exact time would be the all-time greatest QB in cane history as a jr. based upon his stats:

11,493 total passing yards with 92 TD's.....just incredible.....golden needs to gooooooo NOW!

What's frightening is that ppl here accept going from 116 to 78 as progress. Even during the worse years of butch when we had real sanctions, we never dipped so low.

No they got rid of Shannon because of a 7 and 6 record in his 4th year and he was a terrible HC.

well then golden/dnofrio are worse than terrible since they after 3 years cant beat his numbers.....

see green pea.....numbers are everything, that's why FSU is #6 and #3.....football is a game of numbers, if you don't have the numbers...you don't win

its pretty simple but when you are sucking a bong all day its much more complicated.....go to class

see pea.....if you were a numbers guy you would understand.....take any year in NCAA football and you will see that the top 5 teams all are under 3900 yards in defense....

THATS THE SECRET....you have to be under 4000 yards and dnofrio is not capable of that....so UM NEVER goes to national championship.......don't you get it?

where do you think the phrase..."defense wins championships" comes from?

UM defense:

2011 - 4319
2012 - 5837
2013 - 4986

and golden is such an idiot that he cant see that....and to top it off he refuses to rid UM of dnofrio....

look at dnfrios last 3 hears at Temple in the weakest division in all of NCAA football:

2010 - 4656
2009 - 4342
2008 - 4656

now that hes in ACC which is more competitive his defense numbers are worse....expect the same pattern....so where does that leave UM?

NOWHERE

'Don't know' Football just called Alverage 'Larry Coker' without the success based on a bowl game loss to an SEC team.

AAC isn't even the ACC much less the SEC.

It's a Ganes thing, he never understands.

Come the stats coming gallo, they can't refute those. These same hypocrites are really going to get exposed come next year if we sitting at 7 & 6, again, what was the contract extension for after 1 year here. Also, i remember people saying how Alquadin Muhammad was going to help this defense, he did an okay job, but was to inconsistent out there, when he was in position to make the plays he didn't. Unlike these True Freshman when they came in:

Butch was able to recruit without a sword hanging over his head. That was not the case now. A number of guys signed with UF when they could've come here. To me the whole team did not execute well at times (both O and D) this year. We were better on D this year than last year because of a healthy Curtis Porter and the late addition of Renfro. Again, I believe some of our guys were playing hurt the second half of our schedule. This staff has shown they develop players.

The axim that defense wins championships no longer holds. Auburn defeated Alabama (and Mizzou) with offense (Auburn only allowed a total of 5500 yards on D). Unfortunately, our Offense was not very good on 3rd down conversion as well. But, we are 9-3 and are going to play in a bowl game after two long years of foregoing post season. That is reason enough to celebrate.

We are 59 nationally in points allowed per game (scoring defense) and 24 in points scored per game. Win-loss record matters more than anything else.

Auburn is in the NC game. They allowed 5500 yards total (424 ypg). They had a total of 6569 yards on offense (505 ypg).

Our stats: 415 ypg (D) and 446 ypg (O)

So there! Gallo's hypotheses are for liars.

Damn Sean Spence was great!

Good to see old footage of Chick and DZP running around making plays pre-U tough.

auburn is an anomaly.....you cant count 1 team that is outside the defensive parameters....and you'll see auburn get crushed by FSU because of their defensive yardage....

if you look at all the bcs champions outside of auburn (cam newton) you'll see ALL are under 4000 yards on defense....

but you and dnodrio put over 5K on defense and let me know when you get to the show.....

Can we pay Texas to take D'Onofrio off of our hands?

only an idiot wants golden gone. Im sorry what he has done with ncaa investigation over his head is amazing. This wasn't a 2 yr or 3 yr rebuild job it was a 5-6 yr rebuild due to lack of overall talent when took over as well as horrid attitude as well as investigation tieing his hands in recruiting. Texas would be lucky to get golden. Thats the truth. The truth is also that both olsen and brad kayaa are better rated players then morris coming in and both fit goldens system better. The truth is with weapons like yearby and johnson and coley and them this offense will hit top 5 soon. The defense if kids like moten and valentine are as good as there star ratings will get up there in 2-3 yrs also.

No they got rid of Shannon because of a 7 and 6 record in his 4th year and he was a terrible HC.

Posted by: championships is all that matters | December 16, 2013 at 08:52 PM

So what happens when Golden goes 7-6 next year ?

Remember when Calvin/Gallo/87/whateveritis said that we'd be lucky to win 5 games this year? Sigh...

Olsen doesn't have to be as good as Stemo because he will have a much better team around him. But I think Kaaya will beat out Olsen. I think Williams will get the nod next year but Kaaya is going to be really good as a sophomore.

Gallo makes a lot of jokes about "lowly" Duke. However in a recruiting star rating comparison, Duke's defense averaged more than our defense did. I know recruiting stars aren't everything but the point is we are playing with patch work.

Why am I so Great ?

It's really nice they had an awards "show" for the players, but unfortunately the general public was not allowed to attend. Must have been some "awards show". So much for supporting the Hurricanes at a post season affair. Remember when the Hurricane Club/Touchdown Club sponsored the event, it usually had 400-500 attendees, now that was and "awards show". I think the U administration has gone a too far left after this Shapiro thing. If you want you alumni, supporters and fans to support your team you have to have events that allow them to attend. Shame on the U administration, you could have a problem selling bowl tickets after not allowing alumni and fans attend the "awards show".

Hilarious how fake gallo will make an assertion, have it proven wrong, and then claim that the proof is an anamoly. Your assertion was this:

".take any year in NCAA football and you will see that the top 5 teams all are under 3900 yards in defense....". Someone took him up on the challenge, and he was WAY off.

Gallo, you keep repeating your lies, like how we will never get anyone from BTW, yet never admit when you are wrong. You then just turn around and insult the people that prove you wrong.

That is not a debate, a discussion, or even an argument. That is just you throwing accusations at the players, fans, and coaches, followed by you claiming victory if people ignore your lies.

fake gallo, you are weak. And your neighborhood did NOT all go to BC. Another lie you have not admitted was false.

Report: Lane Kiffin to help evaluate Alabama’s offense
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/report-lane-kiffin-help-evaluate-alabama-offense-181641702--ncaaf.html

Did anybody else see this story over on Yahoo Sports? This is what a real coach does. Admit to yourself that you dont know everything there is to know about football and go seek outside help in areas where you may be lacking. I would love to see both Golden and No'D succeed but they are going to have to do a lot of maturing.

What makes me even angrier at these guys is that they have a great defensive mind locally in Kevin Coyle, DC for the Miami Dolphins.

Miami is becoming for defensive recruits, what Florida is to offensive recruits...

Congratulations to our MVP Hurnsie.

Good job, and stepping up to be a leader.

Cane11 it is the intention of the 'U' to monitor and control the access of supporters to the 'Canes.
Close proximity is great, but sitting at a banquet with "who knows who" is not very smart after coming off the NCAA fiasco.

Everything as far as activities and functions with access to players is thoroughly vetted.

Can't say I blame the admin.

How would you like Gallo, Calvin, or any cast of characters bending the players ear with 'sweet pea' and 'clowns' flying out of their mouths every 10 seconds, if they even tried to attend a function.

Bowl tickets will sell. Awards shows do not have any bearing on sales of tickets for Bowl games.

Go 'Canes

4-5 Stars ARE THE BEST PLAYERS ! Maybe if Golden can get more of them, the Canes wouldn't have to watch yet another ACC Championship game on tv.
Posted by: 2-Star U... Let's Load Up On Them. Stars Don't Matter | December 15, 2013 at 07:31 AM

Yeah, this guy NEVER changes his ID.

As for his current lie, we have 13 4 and 5 star verbals, more than ANY school other than Alabama and Tennessee.

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/teamrank/2014/all/all

Oohh, another name change is needed, because 2 star U is more like what the gatrs are gonna be with their 7 transfers and nobody wanting to go to a freefalling team with no OC, no offense, and no bowl game and no future.

DirtyRed, are you trying to claim that Lane Kiffin, unemployed and hated in two states for running two programs into the ground, is the example Miami coaches should follow? No thanks. I would rather they learn from successful head coaches, not from failures that are using the good old boy network to keep their name in the press.

And why do you think that they do NOT consult with other coaches about offense and defense and special teams?

hey Michael B. you're a moron... where did you get your information about Valentine? here's two quotes from ten days ago from Valentine “I didn’t commit to Miami for no reason,” Valentine said. “I want to stop the rumors right now. I am going to be qualifying. Everybody should look out for me when I am wearing a Miami jersey next year. “The relationship with coach Hurlie puts it over the top,” Valentine said. “I talked to him this week and he told me that he loves me and he wants me at Miami. He told me with all the years that he grew up with my step father, he feels like I am his nephew. He feels like I am family and he said I am going to treat you like my own.”

get your facts straight before you spew nonsense

Other than the fact that moving up 38 spots IS progress, I understand what you are saying. It was not ENOUGH progress, and when during the preseason, the goal was to at least get to the 60s, AND that the 78 is due to the late season collapse of a defense that had a much higher status pre-FSU are all reasons to be disappointed in this result.

What would you like to see done about it?
Better players?
Better coaches?
Both?

I would like to see both. I think that fans of all teams would want to see that, though. I bet Alabama, Clemson, Stanford, Louisville, and Missouri fans wish their defense was just a tiny bit better, but do they want to clean house, or just make what they have get better?

The quote was great, but no need to attack Micheal B personally like that. He had an opinion, it was wrong, leave it at that. No need to sink to the level of the belligerent ones on here, on both sides.

As for Valentine himself, He is #14, not 16, he is local, and part of a state championship team.

There is NO reason to cut his scholarship offer and alienate a bunch of local players and coaches, just because he chose to make an LSU visit. That kind of knee jerk reaction was wrong last year, and it would be wrong this year.

I agree with Micheal B though about going for some others.

Khairi Clark is local and has an offer from Miami but has yet to take a visit to us. He's rated lower than Moten and Valentine, but would still be a solid addition.

Who else would you want to go after? I mean, do you want us to chase the the #2 and #3 guys just because they are rated that high? I would rather stick with the guys down here that we have seen, rather than some new york or washington state guy that hasn't faced any real competition.

Cola Cane, the guy does it to avoid having to answer for his previous lies. So many times, he later on claims that he didn't say the stuff that was written in the exact same style, and with another long ID that matches that pattern. And then he will post as a Canes fan asking why his evil comments are called out. Guy will joke about Bryan Pata and Sean Taylor, and then jump to another ID.

well that's what idiot bloggers like you do all the time....is blame the players....

I always blame the COACHES....coaches make decisions, not the players. If the players are not good enough then why are you playing them?

so? what players exactly are "patch work" Give me the names on the 2 deep roster.....

Olsen better than Morris......what a idiot. how can that be when Olsen hasn't taken a snap yet...oh wait yes he has.....I forgot Under Amour...against real players.....what a disaster than was especially in the 4th quarter with 2 mins left and the black team was basically done.....Olsen fumbles the snap on the 7 yard line then kicks the ball towards his side of the field 15 yards and gives up the score.....

but hes better than morris.....lol thas a good one

yards.....

Worst part is that he then attacks Canes fans even in his ID if they prove him wrong too much. Look at how many times he has attacked my ID, and how he is now attacking Zook. Truly sad when a name-changing fellow will sink to that level, joking about murdering Canes players and then threatening Canes fans to try to frighten off Canes fans from posting on a Canes blog.

he says he will pass the act no problem. we need Valentine badly. don't mean to attack him, there are just so many as clowns on here its hard to differentiate between them sometimes... my bad

Valentine plays in the Orlando area I believe, I might be wrong though

well that's what idiot bloggers like you do all the time....is blame the players.... I always blame the COACHES....
Posted by: Jim Gallo | December 17, 2013 at 10:12 AM

Another false claim, from a guy who has spent the past year attacking Duke Johnson, claiming that 1800 yards in two years, the best first two years by a Canes player in HISTORY, is "nothing".

You attack the players constantly, claiming they are weak, injury prone, and projects that didn't have enough stars for your mythical standards.

Stop your lies, everyone that has been here more than a week has seen your negative comments about the players.

Yes I've made a point on here MANY times about how a lot of the bloggers, not all, but most post NOTHING but negativity, and if you were a casual visitor to this blog, you'd think we were 1-10 or something. Yes we need to address our D and QUICKLY, that is a given, but we're also on the cusp of a (possible) 10 win season, and it's been a long time since that's happened. Of course I get lit up for (trying) to look at the bright side, lol. It's a wonder half these bloggers don't commit suicide.

yeah, I joined 247 like a year ago because of the uniformed and negative rhetoric here.... when you pay to make comments and you're held accountable for what you say there is a lot less gallo and Calvin type.

I've always wondered if there are weirdo's like Calvin, Gallo and the ones who constantly change their screen names on other teams blog sites? Is it just a strange obsession for anti-Cane fans, lol?

"Olsen better than Morris......what a idiot. how can that be when Olsen hasn't taken a snap yet...oh wait yes he has.....I forgot Under Amour...against real players.....what a disaster than was especially in the 4th quarter with 2 mins left and the black team was basically done....."

anyone find it odd that this supposedly 50+ year old maggot spends all his time on this blog and watches every high school game possible? Knows all the plays, players and statistics?

If he isn't a pedophile, he is one lonely maggot.

it is nothing.....1800 yards in 2 years

2012/2013:

andre williams (bc) - 2686 / 21 TD's
ka"deem carey (arizona) - 3645 / 40 TD's
tre manson (auburn) - 2623 / 30 TD's
carlos hyde (ohio state) - 2378 / 40 TD's
tj yeldon (alabama) - 2371 / 25 TD's
bishop sankey (washington) - 3214 / 34 TD's

lets go back to 2011/2012.....hes a name we all remember

giovanni bernard - 2481 / 25 TD's.....now here duke johnson:

1667 / 16 TD's....he is just OK...I not down on duke, its just show me something....show me that you can take the abuse at RB.....anyone can rattle off yardage against a scrub team.....

UM played all scrubs this year except FSU.....everyone in the coastal divison S...cks...

aw poor green pea.....whats the matter cant compete can you.....

old time alumni want al golden gone....its pretty simple...btw, duke didn't get to 1800 yards, he was 1667.....nice try

Whichever Gallo you are, you need to take into account Duke has been injured too. Were any of those other rb's injured and miss half a season, and also what about Duke's OVERALL yds including kick off returns. You also need to include that as well.

Nawww, listen to Gallo. Half his family went to BC allegedly, yet he didn't know Andre Williams was injured for parts of the last 3 seasons.

Gallo also thinks Steve Walsh threw TD passes to Santana Moss. He also thinks his lists are insightful.

He is former director of NAMBLA as well.

BWWWHAHAHAHA. You suck, maggot.

DirtyRed, are you trying to claim that Lane Kiffin, unemployed and hated in two states for running two programs into the ground, is the example Miami coaches should follow? No thanks. I know Kiffin was a failure as a head coach, but he is still respected by many for his knowledge of the game. Everyone isn't head coach material, however that doesn't mean they do not know their X's and O's. Just means they are not a very good leader of men.

I dont have inside information so I cannot for sure say that Miami defensive coaches aren't consulting with other coaches. However, I can say judging from what I have been watching there hasn't been much change.

Well written, DirtyRed.

It's true there hasn't been much change in the schemes and in the results. I just thought it odd that you were questioning their maturity based on Kiffin.

Let's hope they show improvement in the next game, and that they make changes so that there will be even more improvement next season.

Another lie. 1867 yards, just in rushing, in the past two years, not 1667. You yourself complained that he got to 900 both years but didn't pass 1000, despite sharing carries both years. You get caught in your own web yet again?

And as for your assertion that old time alumni want Al Golden gone, do you have a poll suggesting that, a link, or is it just ANOTHER lie you want to try claiming six times in some list?

"nice try", indeed.

"aw poor green pea.....whats the matter cant compete can you....."

Competed, and won. What's wrong, you expect responses in less than five minutes? Then where is YOURS, hypocrite?
