Louisville has accepted invitation to Orlando's Russell Athletic Bowl. Will Canes be there, too?

So, it's now official. The Louisville Cardinals is heading to the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, to be played Dec. 28 at the Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando.

Will quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, a Miami product who graduated from Northwestern High and was once committed to the Miami Hurricanes, face the team he grew up loving?

We won't know until Sunday. I still think Miami has a good shot of heading to Atlanta in the Chick-fil-A Bowl to face an SEC opponent. ESPN likes the ratings that the Canes bring, and something about the Canes and the SEC makes it a good draw.

Either way, both bowls could be fun games. Future ACC team Louisville, with Teddy (and former UM defensive line coach Clint Hurtt) would make for an intriguing matchup as well.

Here's the story posted by Matt Repchak of FCSports & The Russell Athletic Bowl:

The Louisville Cardinals have accepted an invitation to play in the 2013 Russell Athletic Bowl. This year’s edition of the game will take place on December 28th at Orlando’s Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium at 6:45 p.m., and will be televised nationally by ESPN.

"Russell Athletic is thrilled that the Louisville Cardinals will complete their outstanding season by appearing in the Russell Athletic Bowl," said Gary Barfield, Senior Vice President, Russell Athletic. "We are eager to find out on Sunday who Louisville will be facing in what is sure to be an exciting game."

Louisville heads to Orlando for the first time after posting its second-straight 10-win season, capped by a 31-24 overtime win at Cincinnati tonight. It becomes the third team in bowl history to enter the game with double-digit wins (Boston College (10), 2007 Champs Sports Bowl; Alabama (10), 1991 Blockbuster Bowl). The previous two teams each went on to win the bowl game and finish with an 11-win campaign.

The Cardinals return junior QB Teddy Bridgewater, who already ranks third in Louisville history in passing yards and fourth in career touchdowns.

The Louisville defense has stymied the opposition all year long. The unit ranks second in total defense in the FBS, allowing only 242.5 yards per game and third in scoring defense, surrendering just 11.4 points per game. The Cardinals also rank in the top five nationally in rushing defense, passing defense, turnover margin and third down conversion percentage.

"We're excited to host a ranked, one-loss Louisville team for the first time in the Russell Athletic Bowl,” said Steve Hogan. “It has built a powerful fan following and we look forward to rolling out the red carpet for Orlando Bowl Week."

Head coach Charlie Strong is an impressive 36-15 with the Cardinals, leading them to two conference championships and bowl appearances now in each of his four seasons. Louisville can earn at least a share of its third straight conference championship with a UCF loss on Saturday.

*You forgot Al had 2 years post-season bans, scholarship restrictions, and the impending NCAA sanctions that made fodder for negative recruiting. No such thing for Randy.

really?......what EXACTLY were the bans - scholarship restrictions and NCAA sanctions at the start of seasons:

2011
2012
2013

please advise....

You can not compare the last 3 years to any team. No top recruits wanted to hear Miami might miss 4 bowl games like penn state or death penalty etc, golden will leave etc. We were lucky to get the Deon Bush's , Tracy Howards, Alq Muhammed, Tyriq Mccords, but I know U haters like to bash Golden, but to go 9-3 in a year 3 of shapiro mess, most schools would have gone the opposite way. He won 6 with a sheety roster in 11 and shapiro mess, 7 with shapiro mess, and now 9 possibly 10, and now can bring in his own players.

Seems to me we are going in the right direction. But our lack of Defensive Lineman that are 4-5 star players, lack of Stud Lb's, and depth makes it harder for the coaches........

the NCAA notice of allegations came on Feb 20, 2013.......WTF are you talking about?

still cant win the lowest title in the lowest conference in the whole NCAA......there's your proof of how much a loser golden/dnofrio are.....

al golden expects the NC trophy to be handed to him?

2014: Um goes 6-6....NEVER wins acc or NC with this staff.....NEVER

Louisville played a high school schedule FYI and a FIU type of conference. UCF is going to BCS bowl U FREAKIN CF.........116 SOS.........

Canes will beat Louisville. And enough of the SEC love. UGA and Tex A amd M have 4 losses. 4.....and are ranked in the top 25. ...thats just plain stupid.

Gallo I will advise. When you a top 4 and 5 star kid, U want to be on TV, be in bowl games, and play for titles. All of the top kids that would have went to Miami heard all of the negative crap from Dumbo, muschump, saban, Louisville, arkansas, and stole alot of players from Miami because of the LOOMING SANCTIONS.

No one knew what Miami was going to get, death penalty, 4 bowl bans, 15 scholly restrictions. so to have a 9-3 team and a top 3 class coming in, and depth now being built is a great position to be in

any high school coach could have won ACC with these players.....

name any player on the duke team that you think is good and I will give you 3 players from that list that are bigger and better......

better yet.....go to the FSU roster and do the same.....

A. 8 145 920 115.0
B. 11 182 978 88.9

Which stat line is the that of the vaunted Storm Johnson? You make the argument for me. Got any others? You should stop now.

If you go to espn.com , 13 espn 300 players are committed to miami with 6 of the top 8 I believe D Lineman, Some are more highly regarded on espn than rivals. although we are ranked 3 on espn, 4 on rivals, and 5 on scout(3 5 star players on scout)

There are other kids on espn that just got higher grades.,-Darrion Owens who moved to LB is on the espn 300 but 3 star on rivals, and we have an infusion of talent ocming in that is loaded with 4-5 4 and 5 star d lineman, much better quality of athlete than we have had. Now with mccord and muhammed already here, and the JUCO DT Wyche thats coming, (USC committ previously), we have top tier D line talent on the 2014 roster and building LB depth back............

we are # 3 on rivals also now.

assume what you are saying is correct and an influence which its not......

why couldn't golden/dnofrio after 3 years win the coastal division?

who on that list held UM back?......golden/dnofrio have been destructive to UM football since they both came here.....

and tonight will be a reminder at 8:00 est.....

Dom can u name 5 4-5 star players starting for duke? Miami has more 4-5 star talent than duke has had in the past ten years combined on this team and has more 4-5 star talent than vt does this year.

The best defensive players we were trying to recruit didnt want to play in this soft scheme. Shoyon greene playing corner.dc is garbage.

Golden has always brought in talent maybe not elite but never ever 116 bad or last in acc bad. Do fans really think the talent is why we finished 116 then followed that with last in acc?

The morons on here blaming the players instead of goldie and d'o is staggering. Morris and the offensive players are as good as any in the country and as good as any of past Miami NC teams.

The defensive players are not just left over RS recruits. They are individually great players. But goldie and d'o are so freakin stupid with their 3 down def. linemen who could not stop a cheerleading squad if they had any college's 6 offensive blockers in front of them. Nor could goldie's and d'o MORON zone NO pass coverage stop a talented high school QB as was proven by FSU's just out of high school QB.

Because of d'o and goldie's bend and break, NO four down linemen and LBs up close THE WHOLE GAME!! and their worthless zone NO pass coverage, Duke will be playing in the ACC championship game instead of Miami after goldie's debacles against VT and Duke.

You morons blaming the Cane players or RS instead of goldie and d'o are incredible.

goldie and d'o are going to get the Canes run over in any bowl game with their worthless defensive schemes.

Keep four down linemen in the whole game. Move the LBs up close behind the linemen and blitz through open holes, go man under and free safeties over, and the Canes will win in a bowl game.

Use the same worthless goldie NO defense as he has for three years and at temple before that, and he will lose the game just like he lost to VT and Duke.

There is so much garbage in this post it's hard to know where to start...

First, blame goes from top to bottom and ultimately falls on Al Golden. The players are every bit as much accountable for the current record as the coaching staff if not more so. Coaches don't miss tackles , drop passes, or fumble the football. Those are bigger reasons that scheme for why we are not playing at 8pm.

As far as Morris and the offense being as good as any NC Miami teams, that's an obscenely ridiculous statement. 2002 We had Willis McGahee, Frank Gore, Andre Johnson, Kellen Winslow... The year before in 2001 add Jeremy Shockey, Najeh Davenport and Clinton Portis on a team that went undefeated. You must be out of your cotton-picking mind to think this offense is that talented. Our TEs barely catch the ball, and behind Duke none of the running backs are elite.

As far as the defense being "individually great players", why don't you name some great players on this defense. Complete players, not just specialists like Tyriq Mccord. DZP is our best LB but even he is inconsistent and not great. Above average, yes; but great? Again, you are out of your mind.

And this idea that if you line them up like champions, they will play like champions demonstrates that you don't understand the game. You might be a big fan, but are lacking in true understanding of football.

We were running under coverage with Safeties over when Benjamin beat Highsmith for that long ball. Highsmith should have blew Benjamin up. He doesn't have the IQ and/or physicality to realize he's not gonna highpoint the ball against a guy 6'5" and should simply blow him up. Instead he went for the pick and got out-rebounded. That should have never been a completion.

In addition, to run LBs that close to the line you need horses that can drop back and cover the TE and RBs in space. We don't have those horses on this team, but even if we did, it wouldn't matter because we can't mount a pass rush to make the QB deliver the ball quickly enough to play aggressive coverage schemes all day long. The aggressiveness of your coverages is directly proportional to your ability to pressure the QB.

Also, there's only 11 guys on the field at once. So, the more you need to rush, the less you have to cover... This can get complex, I understand, but if you're not putting enough pressure on the passer with your four average down DLs that go against 5 offensive linemen and sometimes a RB, you need to commit other players to pressure the QB. This then takes people out of coverage situations on the pass. Which then brings into account your CBs ability to cover guys that run 4.4 40s without that over help because you blitzed the safety.

So the D coordinator can't line up every play in man under. Not to mention there are counters for that style of defense that, even if you could run man all day, you would still need to mix it up. This statement and idea is the epitome of yours and others simplistic thinking about the state of the []_[].

You need the horses to play that aggressive style of defense, and even then, hope you don't run into a Maurice Clarrett that physically abuses your defense.

Come again.

We need LB depth. Darrion owens is a undersized LB.. why not more emphasis on Lb's? Clearly with the recruits we have now slated to sign, it should be a focal point. No argument needed.

Denzel's gone. Who fills the voids? Hybrid type guys who are pass rushers? No. We need TE coverage guys with speed and athleticism.

I like the DT recruits and O line coming in. Just need friggen Line Backers with some 'tude

The problem with this staff is they do retarded stuff on defense like create de/cb hybrids and drop dts into coverage. If u have a physical freak like haloti ngata or clowney yes that's possible but green, porter, Robinson forced to do that is comical and they look silly. Instead of adjusting their scheme to match their players dno and golden repeatedly run plays that's not physically possible for the defense and when it doesn't work they blame the players. The reason our players are out of position is bc they're asked to do stuff they physically can't and instead of masking these defecencies they just stubbornly run the same thing

Posted by: Jim Gallo | December 07, 2013 at 11:49 AM

Everyone knew we were under investigation and the threat of the Death Penalty. Scholarships were being held back under our self-imposed penalties and we sat out of bowls 2 years in a row. Listen, even if there were no official NCAA sanctions, the looming threat of what could happen absolutely affected recruting, not to mention the media fervor and sensationalism about what Nevin Shapiro said happened.

This has been posted numerous times in the that article by Zook and Shalala mentioned how the lies played nationally well but the facts did not.

Have you been under a rock for the last 3 years? You're telling me Randy had anything remotely close to that going on during his tenure?

Explain missed takcles, fumbles and dropped passes. Was that scheme?

And tell me if this team doesn't have the 2001 or 2002 defense that it gets ranked that low. We have A.J. Highsmith as safety! Are you kidding me!?

"If u have a physical freak like haloti ngata or clowney yes that's possible but green, porter, Robinson forced to do that is comical and they look silly."

You also don't understand...

Clowney was overhyped, but if you have physical freaks on the DL, you just rush them and don't need to zone blitz. We do that because we don't have the physical freaks on the DL. It's trickery/scheme to compensate for our lack of physical freakdom.

"Gallo", because of the bowl bans we missed out on close to 60 practices the last 3 years.

Look for a well rested Miami defense to get pressure consistently and win

All I want to see is just average defense not even good and god forbid elite I just want average but two freaking years in a row is 116 and then last in acc. If u look at our roster objectively it is in no way the worse in the acc. It's bc we have the worst dc in the acc maybe the whole country. Why does dno never answer for his crimes

Lots of good comments here and smart football minds.

I think Teddy or Johnny would shred us. These guys are good passers and have mobility. Think of how many D List QBs have run up huge yards against us. How confused the secondary has been, and how little pressure we put on the QB. Won't work.

Their RBs are decent as well. I like this kid Melina from A&M, and Louisville has got some speed.

Simply throw underneath, run outside of the DEs or cutback if the DE moves outside on the play. Those QBs would kill us with that formula.

That said, I hope they wouldn't and agree with the optimist posters here...

I hope our defense would reach a new level for the game. I hope Golden-Donofrio would stop running the same formations that have been easily beat the last three years. I hope the extra practices would matter. I hope Morris would have a great game. I hope Scott would get to play. On and on.

Golden will not can D'Onofrio. They are buddies, as they should be, given their common history. Their ability to be flexible, develop players and embrace kids who struggle is minimal. Too many have left UM.

That said, the more I read, the more the talent argument applies. We have some great young guys in the secondary. Our front seven is the issue. We have personnel that might make a difference if on the field, particularly at DE. DT is a tough spot for us, but there are some promising guys being recruited.

So I think either Louisville or A&M will have a significant advantage over us. While A&M is said to be weak defensively, Louisville can be tough. Both teams have great QBs and offenses, and our D will need to play at a different level.

On the "hasn't the culture gone to crap" front, last year's Heisman winner turned out to be an embarassing, self-centered jerk. This year's likely winner, Winston, has been accused of rape. But not charged.

According to Geraldo Rivera, every Heisman voter should read the police report. The local cops stonewalled the case for a year before addressing the indictment issue.

So again, in sports, we have a__holes leading the way. It makes me sick. Both guys were great stories that became tarnished. Where is the kid of great skill and character that wins these awards?

OK RG III was a good kid, but in our society, we have too many morons and they should be passed over, no matter their skill on the field. I thought AJ McCarron deserved it for his overall class, leadership and influence on his team. Until the Auburn miracle finish.

Speaking of which, may the football gods smile down upon Duke today, and grant them an upset over Winston and the Noles. Ah, Karmic Backlash....

Go Canes! I hope we beat whoever we face.

what recruit are you missing?

UM has the best facilities (you idiots don't even know what bad facilities are).....24/7 practice weather......the best brand in the NCAA.....sunlife stadium and the hottest city in the USA....

and lowly duke is playing tonight.....immediately fire golden/dnofrio....

you have 2 deep talent at EVERY position.....2 very good QB's HANDED to Al golden.....top talent feeds within your own back yard.....

try coaching at fordham.....see how you like to recruit there?....who are in playoffs today

al golden/mark dnofrio....SUCK...PLAIN & SIMPLE

You guys are jokes. Heard all the same with Butch. Show me the roster with pro people backed up with pro people. Don't act like we have Miami talent. It's not there!!! This nevin stuff killed us. Stop crying like little girls. If you were such good coaches you'd have a job.

We are not 2 deep at every position...no way. It's not an excuse for thjs defense, but we are not 2 deep. That's why this is a critical recruiting cycle.

Ganes fan doesn't like the fact that former Hurricane before Alverage showed up Storm Johnson is going over 1000 yards for the year and leads his conference in touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Duke Johnson added 15 pounds in the offseason when his best game is all quick cuts and stiff arms and got his ankle broken playing for Alverage and his run the back into the ground until he's banged up and the team suffers style of attack.

But hey, at least his average a game is higher on less carries and he didn't finish the season, right Ganes fan?

It's a Ganes thing, they never understand.

5-7 record of opposition for 2013.....can even win lowly coastal division....

Meanwhile, Duke Johnson added 15 pounds in the offseason and will add another 15 during this offseason making him the #1 contender for next year's Heisman Trophy. His best game is all quick cuts and stiff arms and now thanks to Al Golden he will also now be a power runner.

But hey, at least the Gators have...uh...hmmm...NO ONE!!! Also, how about Muschamp getting both of the Gators starting QB's injured, although they were so bad who really cares?

It's a Gator thing, I am waaaaaay too stupid to understand anything.

I AM THE WORST POSTER ON ALL FOOTBALL BLOGS CAUSE I'M A WEENIE!!!!

Aggravated stalking, domestic violence by strangulation, aggravated assault on women, burglary, larceny and stealing a credit card off a dying girl, etc.

It's a Gator thing, no one in their right mind would ever understand.

The shining jewel of your castoff list ripped off 37 yards today! 13 games to squeak by 1000 yards for a riveting 78yd/game in the weakest BCS conference. Duke broke an ankle and still almost out-produced him. He left UM because he didn't want to compete. If that's not the definition of mediocre, I don't know what is.

It's an obvious thing, sorry you don't understand. You have anymore game breakers you wanna discuss?

You know it's funny how some of the same people who rip this defensive scheme and all about being soft and what not must only have video tapes of the defense's that were effective back in the 80's because I have seen all year where supposed great defenses have had their DE's defending these flat passes to slot receivers. Did some of U wanna be genious's ever think that the man just hasn't got players that are good enough yet to make the plays. It isn't the scheme as much as it is the players are not good enough. Also back in the 80's the closest thing to the spread was the run and shoot and just because they both may deploy 4 receivers that doesn't mean that it is the same offense. The game has evolved nimrods.

Watch MIZZOU's D-Line at the snap of the ball... Animals.

When we get that, like we used to have, we'll be much closer to being back.

We are a long, long, long, long way from that.

Stands Up Front on D,

Amen, brother! Mizzou comes to play.

I think it's the scheme and the players, but mostly the players. The defense is a messright now. Golden will get the talent issue resolved.

Ganes fans gets shown he knows nothing, makes the case against his own point against his beloved golden shower spigot. As usual, he never understands.

THE WORST POSTER IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL RELATED BLOGGING goes back to his well of re-scripting posts to make his favorite golden shower spigot look even worse than his three game blowout loss streak to go for an overall losing record in November. As usual he never understands.

It's a Ganes thing, they never understand.

Only three more hours until Duke takes on FSU for the ACC title. Get your popcorn ready Ganes fans, you get to watch two teams that blew out your favorite golden shower spigot play for something he's never won as a coach after winning something he's never won as a coach.

Hurricane fans are rightfully upset that this is happening today, because it's a 'Canes thing, you wouldn't understand.

What would Auburn do to our front 7 ?

FIRE D CORCH, HE SUCKS!!

I am a Gator hillbilly who has been shown I know nothing, I make the case against my own point against my beloved and soon to be fired Muschump a lunatic. As usual, I never understand.

I AM THE WORST AND DUMBEST POSTER IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL RELATED BLOGGING goes back to MY re-scripting posts to make MY favorite Aaron Hernandez look even worse than his three year murder streak. As usual I never understand anything.

It's a Gator thing, I don't understand.

Only three more hours until Missouri takes on Auburn for the SEC title. Get your popcorn ready Gator fans, you get to watch two teams that blew out your favorite Muschump (hasn't he been fired yet?) play for something he's never won as a coach after winning something he's never won as a coach.

Gator hillbillies are rightfully upset about a 4 and 8 record, no bowl game, being slaughtered by Georgia Southern a Division 6 team who never even had to complete a pass to slam the felons and the Miami Hurricanes went 9 and 3 and are going to a great bowl game and are busy stealing our recruits...it's a bad time to be a Gator hillbilly, of course there never has been a good time to be a spineless gator.

If Gallo got a lot smarter he could move up to dumb.

Why exactly would a coach kick talented players off the team for no reason? Is there evidence Golden is a masochist and likes losing? Did he fail Economics and think that poorer record coaches get better jobs and contracts than winning coaches? Does he read this insipid blog and throw games on purpose to bust gallo's list shrunken unit?

Gallo delete your list in its entirety and start over. Be truthful this time because everybody knows that Duke Johnson wasn't "LEFT" by Shannon. Everybody knows that Duke was a Cane regardless of who the coach was (no knock on Shannon but you could have been named the coach and he was still signing with UM). Same as Chickillo too.
