« Al Golden after the Hurricanes' first bowl practice in three years. Practice No. 2 is today. | Main | Nine Canes named to Coaches' All-ACC team »

So, what do you think of the Teddy vs. The Canes Bowl (AKA Russell Athletic Bowl)? Should be fun.

Sounds like a movie: Teddy vs. The Canes.

At one time, Teddy Bridgewater was committed to the Miami Hurricanes. Now he's committed to beating the Hurricanes.

Bridgewater, a Miami Northwestern product who now stars as the Louisville Cardinals' quarterback, will lead the Cardinals against Miami at 6:45 p.m. Dec. 28 in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando.

They'll officially announce the matchup in about half an hour. The game will be played at the Citrus Bowl Stadium.

Eighteenth-ranked Louisville (16th in USA Today coaches' poll) is 11-1 and 7-1 in the American Athletic Conference.

Miami, ranked 25th in the USA Today coaches' poll, is 9-3 and 5-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Miami leads this series 9-1, but lost 31-7 the last time they played the Cardinals in Louisville in 2006.

Bridgewater pulled his commitment from Miami after former UM coach Randy Shannon was fired. He followed his Miami Northwestern teammate and favorite receiver Eli Rogers to Louisville.

Bridgewater's mother was unhappy with the way Hurricanes fans reacted to her son decommitting from UM before he made Louisville his choice.

Regardless, Bridgewater is a great talent, and as repeatedly witnessed in his three seasons at Louisville, has a knack for creating good situations out of bad ones on the field.

Last season, Bridgewater threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns as the then-No. 21 Cardinals upset third-ranked Florida 33-23 in the Sugar Bowl.

The Cards have 23 players on their roster from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Talk about a South Florida pipeline.

If the Canes can pull this one off, it would definitely bolster recruiting efforts.

So, what's your take? Will you travel to Orlando for the game?

 Do you like the matchup?

I definitely like the matchup, and the storylines.

And just in case you didn't know, Miami plays Louisville next season, when the Cards join the ACC as a member of the Atlantic Division. They'll replace Maryland. The game date has not yet been announced.

Miami is allotted 13,500 tickets for the Russell Athletic Bowl. Tickets are priced at $77 and $82 and can be purchased through the UM Ticket Office online at CanesTix.com, in-person at BankUnited Center (M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or by phone at 1-800-GO CANES.

Whether Nevin Shaprio was speaking truth or falsities, perception was reality, the media was screaming “death penalty” and a program damn-near life support looked like it was falling in the abyss. Forget ultimate success, BACK THEN MOST OF US WERE HOPING UM WOULD MERELY SURVIVE!

"Golden hustled to save the 2011 recruiting class—which had only four verbal commits when Shannon was let go the previous December. By February, 19 kids joined the Miami program, though the class reeked of last-ditch effort as a new leader had less than two months to sell, close and deliver."

IN ALL THE FAUX FAN-FUELED FRUSTRATION, WHERE IS THERE REGARD FOR THE 36 PLAYERS WHO LEFT THIS PROGRAM BETWEEN 2010 AND 2012, RECRUITED EITHER BY A COACH WHO DIDN’T KNOW BETTER (SHANNON), OR A NEW ONE (GOLDEN) FORCED TO TAKE CHANCES AS HE NEEDED BODIES AND HAD NO OPTIONS?

Maybe this bowl pays $ 1.7 mil.

Teddy B is a very good qb. We sure could have used him for 3-4 years. In the past, The U has shut down many star players on other teams. Let's see if we can shut him down.

Another fantastic "Raising Canes" documentary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohlA4-sYpXU)...kicking the Gators back to Hicksville...as the players and coaches chanted...it is great to be a Miami Hurricane!!

It's a Canes thing--you haters will never understand!!

"It's all a matter of subjective, biased INTEPRETATION!"

Shalala came after Butch left.. They never crossed paths. IF Shalala had met Butch he likely would have stayed another year, or two.

So no, it's not "a matter of subjective, biased interpretation (no caps necessary)". It's sheer stupidity wrapped in untruth. This by the way was the basis of calling one of the great college presidents and most ardent supporters of student athletes in the country, who shepherded []_[] and defended []_[] through some of the most challenging times []_[] ever faced, a troll. smh...

As far as Randy, let me tell you for a fact (no caps necessary), Randy got the job because of Donna. You're right the BOT didn't necessarily believe Randy was ready, but it was Donna who went to bat for him. No Donna, no Randy Shannon head coach at Miami.

BTW, I've met the guy. Sat side by side at the same bar and talked football. I have the utmost respect for who he is as a man that go way beyond football for reasons I don't care to divulge in this forum. That said, I can't hate on my own kind, hillbilly.

I used to think you didn't take yourself or this blog too seriously and found your tongue and cheek entertaining. But like a bad movie i'm realizing you're for real. Like, all the way real. You probably talk and think exactly the way you type. Responding to my posts on behalf of others don't make you anything.

Rumor has it Alabama is about to give Saban an extension and pay raise to $7 million a year. Texas is sitting back waiting to throw up a couple million more. I wonder how much it will take to keep our guy. He77 he's the best coach in America.

Even though he's 1 game over .500, hasn't won a conference my bad he hasn't even won a division yet.

49-48 is a half game over .500, not one game over .500.

If it was a full game over .500, one loss wouldn't make him .500, like this bowl is threatening to make him if he doesn't win. Nobody's hiring him away from UM until he actually wins something to impress them or he's fired. So nobody's getting him from UM until they fire him first.

Not sure what Golden is waiting on. If you don't change coaching personnel sooner than later. Recruits will go else where. Sometimes friendships get in the way of championships. See Ron Zook we have Real canes and canes fan who want the best for the program with no excuses. Then their are the canes bobble head fans who agree with anything Golden and staff say regardless of what they see being displayed on the field.

I advise Miami area kids that play Defense to go elsewhere. D CORCH will ruin your career just like he did to Anthony Chickillo....

D CORCH STAYS, MIAMI LOSES GREAT RECRUITS!!

FIRE D CORCH!!

Could someone please smack this jim gallo idiot around? All this talk about Duke Johnson being an average back because of his stats, did gallodumbo forget that Duke has missed 5 games and he still had 920 yards? To me that sound like a pretty good running back.
Also, why can't Canes fans just be happy the Canes are in a bowl game, close to home and against a ranked team. Remember, 9-3 is better than 6-6 and 7-5. They are showing improvement, be happy for them, they deserve it.
Hope the Canes have a good crowd and a good game, GO CANES!!!!!

ATTENTION, ROFL!

I'd be cool with them firing morons 1 & 2 and hire coach don soldinger to be the headcoach, the soft shat wil be gone overnight including the corny named "U-tough", soldinger, no gimmicks or gadgets, just real results.

We don't need raising Cane videos, that's what we got Canefreak & spoonerstreet for. F the those 2 penn disgrace queers, their football philosophy does not belong at UM.

Interesting you ask for Soldinger while rejecting "soft chat", "corny" motivational techniques, and Golden's book; since Soldinger wrote a code called the attitude of a champion, which could essentially be a chapter in a book, and regularly quotes Kipling poetry to motivate his players.

I really hope these kids come out balls to the walls for this game. We have to disrupt TB, we can't let him pick us apart, so disguised blitzes, and NOT giving the receivers 10 yard cushions are what we need to do. On O protect Morris, and wr/rb screens, also draw plays to slow their rush, and for the LOVE OF GOD, get the TE's more involved, and hit the 5 to 7yd short passes. They don't have to be 50 yd bombs every time. Take what is there, and get the most on 1st downs. We have to keep our O on the field as long as possible. Sustain drives and GO CANES!!!

Based on your theory of recruits not coming to schools because of coaching one can only assume they and you support Coaches Golden and D'Onofrio as the Canes currently boast the #3 recruiting class in all of college football, Mr. Real Canes fan.

The Canes are 9 & 3 and have the opportunity to beat a very good Louisville team to become 10 & 3, thus posting the most wins in a season since 2003. Additionally, as stated above they have a top 3 recruiting class that may get even better due to the NCAA attack being quelled after 3 very long years. And finally, the only bobble head fans I am aware of are those who ignorantly refuse to accept the facts that Miami's football program is on an extremely promising track and will soon be playing for National Championships.

Zook,

Good point about the shift in priorities. After worrying about ncaa for years, we celebratef for 2 days and went right back to the season. That was the major event of the season.

Its frustrating because the losses to Duke and VT took the air out of the season. Think abiut where we would be if our only 2 losses were against the team that will be champions. Now people don't think progress, they think about how close we came to having 5 losses.

Fact is we won't feel positive again until signing day. This Louisville game is only useful as practice.

I still believe in Golden though. I'm hoping he makes the change on defense.

To Teddy's mom- Why didn't Teddy follow Randy to his next Head Coaching job? OOPS, he still doesn't have one!!!! Because he is terrible!!! What did she expect ?
Hey Gallo another racist outing for you, eh buddy. It's amazing to me how stupid Gallo & Calvin are . Or are they the same schizoid dude!!!!

Two JUCO DT's off the board for Miami?

Must be THE WORST COACH IN MODERN UM FOOTBALL HISTORY being able to spread his recruiting oats unencumbered of those mean old NCAA investigations finally, now you'll see the full power of his inept coaching and recruiting from someone who never won a division title in the MAC or by beating Duke. In football.

It's a Ganes thing, they never understand!

Louisville apparently has a defense from looking at their scores of their wins.

On the other hand, the only difficult team they played was UCF and they lost that one giving up 38 points which makes them look like Miami.

No defense versus no defense.
Hellofaway to run a railroad.

////////////////////////////////

When you win 2 state titles in Miami as a highschool headcoach and headcoached in 4 of them you got a real good idea of WTH you doing. When you know about the impact soldinger had at the highschool level in Miami, he's earned the right to tell you something the way he knows how to tell it.

When you are apart of at least 2 national championship teams at UM and don't forget he coached linebackers at one point at UM(winston moss & barrow for sure), apparently somebody knows the game of football.

When you got edgerrin james, james jackson, najeh davenport, clinton portis, gore & mcgahee on your resume, whatever they right is already authenticated. You got damyum right "Attitude of a Champion" what's the gimmick in that, that's real and soldinger coached real and he understood the higher archy of a team and empowered his players to let the next man know when he'll get some playing time, not all this run for 5 yards one play and than have to look to the sidelines to see if you coming out, how in the hell can a
runningback get in a groove if he's always looking to the sidelines to see if he's coming out on 1 carry, sheer stupidity.

This is partly why the offense is always helter skelter, to many unnecessary substitutions, all game long. When soldinger speaks, people listen cause that man knows what he's talking about.

To sum it all up, don't ever mention soldinger and moron #1 in the same sentence again if you want to be counted as wise. I don't need to look at that video you posted up, soldinger been talking about the wolf & the pack for along time, that's part of being a champion. When you got guys like ed reed still quoting that all these years later, that tells you how much of a profound impact soldinger made on them, in the mean time, we got a moron trying to tell our current team before we play Fsu,

/////////////////////
"if you don't rise to the occasion, fall back on your training"
/////////////////////

Now you go and ask yourself, is that the "Attitude of a Champion". soldinger is certainly qualified to inform individuals about the attitude of a champion, why, because he's been one on several occasions, when has morons #1 & 2 ever been champions anywhere!

What's interesting is you took time out to post something without thinking, just blindly trying to defend these pathetic morons who keep bringing this school down in the name of loyalty to each other! If moron #1 is really about winning and is really dedicated to his "destination job" like he says, after this bowl game his penn disgrace friend will be dismissed.

Whatever, bUbba! And it's you who ASSUMES, that moi is " RESPONDING " to your Cane matter's on behalf of others in this here Hurricane forum. When that's totally FALSE! dUh

But nice try on lamely attempting to READ ME! hUh

And yes, the POWERS THAT BE DIDN'T WANNA' PAY top dollars for an ESTABLISHED B.C.S. head coach or offensive/defensive coordinator, after the Shannon fallout!!

Chit, even your typical major college football fan-dom KNOWS that the Hurricane's DIDN'T want to pay mucho million's for a head coach in 2010.

Heck, the major college football MEDIA-NEXUS knew the Cane's WEREN'T going to hire a MARQUEE head coach or offensive/defensive coordinator back in '10.

As for Mr. Davis staying another year or two if President Shalala arrived in Coral Gables in 2000.

THAT'S PURE, UNADULTERATED GUESS WORK on your part. Nothing more, nothing less.

Nevertheless, KEEP your HOPE alive for your boy, Marky Mark!!!

I still believe in Golden though. I'm hoping he makes the change on defense.

And YOUR ancestor's BELIEVED the world was FLAT at one time, too!!

Oh, if Goldie didn't CUT LOSE marky mark at the conclusion of the 2012 season.

What makes you and your Cane loyalists be Goldie will change the current defensive schemes, philosophy's or ploys.

Chit, The Golden Tongue wouldn't even CHIT-CAN a team ALBATROSS last season!!

Nonetheless, Golden and D'Onofrio will still field winning teams.

Unfortunately, those teams WON'T be of the 11-1 or UNDEFEATED variety. If U Know What I Mean. hUh

just like that, with little attention paid to the past half-decade of disaster and mediocrity thanks to the Coker/Shannon eras. How soon we forget or is it--how stupid can you be?"

@@@@@@@@

Exactly ron DORK! And your beloved Goldie nd' Marky Marky have CONTINUED the trend of MEDIOCRITY regarding Hurricane football matters and what not.

Fortunately for Cane fan-dom. This season Miami, Florida played the WEAKEST NON-CONFERENCE schedule in the Hurricane's STORIED history. Well, at least since the 1980 season. hUh

Nevertheless, Almighty Buddha was on the Cane's sidelines during the Carolina Blue and Wake Forest games. otherwise, one of those games could have been a stunning lost. But that's all MOOT now.

Oh, it's a shame Almighty Buddha was A.W.O.L. for both the Beamer Ball and Duke games. Because both Goldie nd' Marky Mark could have used some favorable luck and what not.

Sigh. This thread is boring now.
Saban to UT is way more interesting. Schadenfreude for Alabummer is the happiest I have been about CFB in over a decade.

Golden stays. DNO stays. Soldinger would be a great hire, but alas, tis not happening.

I am a Cane fan for life, but I am now realizing we aren't going to be anything to talk about anytime soon...It's okay, loving the Canes in their heyday of the early 2000s led to me being a fan of all of CFB.

The story lines are much more interesting when you can step back from unhealthily obsessing about a team or two...ahem..

Take for instance - Oregon; the way they coopted our branding and developed a new style offense that's almost taken them to the promised land. Gotta take a little pride in the emulation...

The glee in watching Lane Kiffin exposed as the biggest tumor to have ever had a career in CFB - just think AG haters, it could always be worse...

Urban Meyer's carnage left at UF, yet he was one win away from taking the forever hated OSU to the NC - Love you, Sparties...

I can honestly say that the crazy world of CFB has left me completely unable and unwilling to predict what will become of our Canes on the 28th and into signing day, ergo, I will keep checking in here, sigh, to see if anything of merit/interest is left to say...

Five Titles, had really started to enjoy your line, until you went IRL fight challenge. I have appreciated the expose' on the blog piggy...I remember when he used to post as the curse, waaaaay back in the herald days. I miss RM cane on the forums. Anyone know what happened to that guy?

I was at the Orlando Toilet Bowl back when we lost to Wisconsin, and that stadium is a dump, and we played like crap, so I'm not waiting my time and money going up there again to witness Teddy throw for 600 yards against a Dumbofrio coached defense.... it's going to be ugly and I am tired of getting my blood pressure watching teams run up and down the field on us every week -this defense will go down as the worst in UM history, and Dumbofrio is already the worst coach to ever step on the field at Miami. Heck, Teddy may get an honorary Heisman Trophy after this game, he must be licking his chops just thinking about throwing with no pressure into a two deep soft zone scheme. Dumbofrio will not do anything different for this game, therefore, why should anyone expect a different result. If this defense makes mediocre college QB's look like All-stars, imagine what a real All-Star QB will do to this defense. SMH

Golden contracted here thru 2019. The sybil group claims that Golden should be fired now and also asserts that the admin is cheap. Only a moron would argue for the former while asserting the latter.

Golden not going anywhere. No way he is bought out, even if the admin wanted him out, which they don't. With new TV $, Miami football is highly profitable. Most acc teams in a bowl and all $ split.

It is conceivable, but not likely, that Dno could be ushered out after next year. He'll likely be here as well.

Only the truly insane keep posting the same thing over and over and think it will impact anything. Golden will be here, making a lot of $ for many more years. Get over it, get a new team, or just continue to be insane expecting a different outcome.

D, here's Butch on the breakdown with Paul Dee, direct from the man's mouth;

"How many titles might Miami had won if Davis had stayed? Both he and Canes fans are curious.

And, yes, he says he regrets leaving Miami.

"Very much so. I would've loved to have stayed for 30 years at Miami," he said. "We couldn't get it worked out from a contractual standpoint and it had nothing to do with money, but that's a whole different story. They win it the next year. They played for it the year after that. Everything was going spectacularly after that. How many would we have won? I wish I had stayed another 10 years to find out how many."

Davis' explanation for what was behind his departure from UM: "Ten days before we played BC [Boston College] in the last game of the season, we had completed 97 percent of the contract. It had taken us three hours to agree to the money. That was done. I was probably one of the lowest-paid [I-A] head coaches when I took that job [in 1995] and then after seven years, they were paying me $1 million. The stumbling block we could never get over was, if they decided to do what North Carolina did [by just suddenly firing him] they were only going to pay me 20 percent of the money, but because [Miami] had been burned by Howard [Schnellenberger] leaving and Jimmy leaving and Dennis [Erickson] leaving, so if I had ever left I had to pay them 80 percent.

"I said, 'Guys that isn't fair. I can't pay you 80 and you're only gonna pay me 20. If you wake up and say, 'I don't like redhead coaches,' I'm gone. Let's either make it 80-80, 20-20 or 50-50.' We battled over 20-80 for almost two months. I turned the Cleveland Browns job down. I turned down two other jobs. Well, lo and behold, the last home visit I made I'm sitting in Antrel Rolle's living room and his mom and dad said, 'Coach, are you gonna be here?' I said, 'Antrel, I will be the head coach at the University of Miami,' and I believed in all my heart I was going to be. Then we go home and four or five days later we still can't get the contract done. [Cleveland president] Carmen Policy calls and says, 'Would you reconsider?'

"I talked it over with my wife. You live a little bit in fear. I thought, 'Well, today they love me, but in 1997 they were flying a plane over the stadium, 'Get Rid of Butch Davis!' It didn't take long to keep reminding yourself that this 80-20 stuff wasn't fair. We made one more stab and called [Miami AD] Paul Dee and he went to the trustees and asked them to make it fair. Finally, we made the change. I wished I hadn't have, but we did."

Meanwhile, THE WORST COACH IN MODERN UM FOOTBALL HISTORY is extorting the school for 6-6 season record contract extensions, but they won't go and hire Butch back? Zakkee is right, the administration wants to keep the program sanitized and losing to Duke in football.

Hello Canesjunkie,

I believe in enjoying the moment and couldn't be any happier that we are getting another month of Canes football.

Knowing the "U" brand will be getting additional exposure that will undeniably help recruiting and the kids will get almost a month more of practice and another game experience makes me very happy.

And most of all--the kids have earned the bowl experience and they are playing a good opponent that brings a lot of pizzazz with Teddy B. and the other local kids, which will make watching the game a blast (I don't believe I've used the word "blast" in over 35 years).

Having recently started watching the "Raising Canes" documentaries my confidence in the direction of the program has never been stronger. Seeing firsthand how much the kids admire, respect and have bought into Coach Golden's approach is something I haven't witnessed since the Butch Davis era.

Enjoy this month and the game my friend!!

D,

Golden has to change his boy, it's pretty clear Dino is in over his head. How many more times do we need to take a 40+ point beating?

You call me a dreamer, because you don't agree with my outlook. I say you are unreasonable, because you simply refuse to accept the disaster that Al Golden inherited that was made monumentally worse due to the most destructive NCAA attack in over 25 years or since the SMU case.

I believe I am looking at reality and you are not and mirror those who flew the banners over the Orange Bowl screaming 'Fire Butch Davis' after the Pell Grant fiasco.

And the Pell Grant experience was a walk in the park compared to what Al Golden has endured after Coker, Shannon and then the NCAA attack.

Only tonight Al Golden was honored with a leadership award in Houston and was also honored by another group as a candidate for coach of the year.

Is it your position you know more than these people who are professionals and do nothing but follow college and pro football?

Trust me on this-- your days of attacking Al Golden are numbered, because after next year numerous major college football programs with sold out stadiums week after week are going to back-up dump truck loads of cash to Coach Golden's front door begging him to take over their programs. And people like you that have done nothing but criticize every move the man has made will be the ones howling that Al Golden is a traitor.

You and the other haters have a choice---stand with the "U" now or continue rooting for their failure...it is that simple!!

Miami coach Al Golden has dealt with his share of adversity in his three years with the Hurricanes.

He was recognized Wednesday night for navigating Miami through the toughest chapter in its history while leading the Hurricanes to their first nine-win season since 2009 when he was honored with the 2013 Lombardi Award for Excellence in Coaching.

The moment he stepped on the stage in Houston to accept the award from LaVell Edwards, Golden credited his players, many of whom have played under the uncertainty of an NCAA investigation for more than two years.

“I humbly dedicate this to the 2013 Miami Hurricanes,” Golden said. “They overcame a lot adversity over the last three years and in so doing, taught us a lot about unity, a lot about perseverance, a lot about leadership itself and maybe perhaps overall, a lot about class.”

Golden continued by thanking Miami athletic director Blake James, school president Donna Shalala, his wife Kelly and his parents.

Miami started its season unranked and not knowing if a protracted NCAA investigation would keep the Hurricanes out of another bowl game. They won seven straight games and during that stretch, learned the NCAA would not ban them from the post-season.

While Miami (9-3) lost three straight late in the season, the Hurricanes bounced back and finished the season with a pair of wins. On Sunday, they took the No. 25 spot in the USA Today coaches poll and accepted a bid to face Louisville in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Dec. 28 in Orlando.

It will be their first bowl appearance since a 33-17 loss to Notre Dame in 2010.

Another bad day for the ignorant haters...read on:

Yeah, we know, Athlon Sports is the PR arm for the University of Miami and know nothing about college football. And you know much more about the game and coaches than they do. LOL!!

beed, I just got tired of how the guy would brag about how he would beat up and kill Canes fans, so I offered him the opportunity to meet and discuss it. He backed down like the coward he is.

But fine, I will stop offering him the chance. The point was made that the keyboard courage he exhibits as all type and no action.

As for RM Cane, I am sure that he is among those that have moved on to scout, rivals, or some other site that blocks the name-changing fellow.

There were even REAL gatr fans and fans of other teams that finally gave up, since they would make a pro-gatr comment, and he would piggyback and exaggerate their comment to the point that they were lumped together.

But I also agree with you that there is not much to discuss until we are closer to the game. The whole rehash of the same topics, where actual points are ignored, but exaggerations, lies, and attacks are repeated by the usual suspects, can be skipped for two weeks and nothing will have been changed.

As we have seen, the usual suspects will scream the sky is falling based on false claims of decommits, but in the end, February is a long way to go and it won't matter what insider articles say until then...

I am still curious why Duke is considered a Randy recruit but Chickillo is considered a Golden recruit, when Chickillo also committed to Randy and signed to Golden, but it is not important because they are both here, which is all that matters.

Hey, the week off might do the thread some good, you never can tell!

Congratulations to Al Golden for winning an Excellence Award and showing class in accepting it! Plus, he is nominated for Coach of the Year, no small feat. Great job in improving the Canes program, recruiting aggressively and weathering the NCAA storm.

Now let's ratchet it up a few levels, starting with Louisville. Play some D and win this game!

Although we battle it out on this blog, progress is being made at UM. Hope we see critical decisions made and the Canes in the national spotlight very soon . That is what we long for.

FINAL FOUR IN 2014. GO CANES!

Who cares who the L'ville qb is, he's just another qb. L'ville can be beat and the Canes have a 50-50 chance of finishing a respectable 10-3. Go Canes!
